What we say...

Ping S59 Tour Model Irons

Ping have extended the S59 iron range and produced their first ever iron to use a plastic ferrule.

The basic head shape is exactly the same as the original S59 but the Tour Model iron combines a lovely brushed and part-polished finish, which has the visual effect of narrowing the top edge for a very pleasing set-up at address.

the set is particularly striking with this new dual finish, it’s a shame they will only appeal to a limited market. The new S59 irons are in shops now.

They’re for… The S59 will only appeal to the low handicapper looking for a quality, powerful iron with extra playability features over some of the forged irons on the market.

The Ping S59 irons, sometimes called the Ping S59 blades because they were the most blade -like irons Ping made when they were first released, remain popular as a used set today. In fact, although they first appeared in 2003, Bubba Watson was still using them on the PGA Tour as late as 2013. That's a lot of time passed in the world of major golf manufacturer equipment.

Ping's thumbnail description of the S59 blades was this:

"A thin top line, smooth hosel transition, compact head, and narrow, cambered sole gives the S59 a traditional blade appearance sought by better players. The S59 also features a stabilizing bar across the cavity, producing a solid feel and distance control."

Buying Ping S59 Irons Used

The S59 blades remain a popular club in the used golf club market. You might find Ping itself offering used sets via Amazon. Ping (at the time of this writing) still offers new S59 irons, too, but with a catch: they only have individual clubs, and selection is limited. Check with your local golf shop about ordering replacement S59 irons, or visit ping.com .

Now, here is the original review that we published not long after the Ping S59 blades came on the market.

Review: Ping S59 Irons

(Note: This review was originally published in February 2004.)

Reviewer: T.J.

Positives of the Ping S59 Irons

  • Good feel at impact.
  • Very forgiving on mishits.
  • Very soft feel for a blade.
  • Exceptional weighting.
  • Very consistent shot control.

Negatives of the Ping S59s

  • Cosmetically, could look better.

Playing the Ping S59 Irons Ping is known for a solid club that is easy to hit, and Ping did not disappoint with these irons. These are blade-like irons with superior weighting in the sole. Good solid feel in your hands, very forgiving on mishits, easy to work the ball left and right. Overall, a solid club.

This review is a product of my own internal comparison of the Ping S59 and the Mizuno MP33 irons. Since I played both irons, I wanted to narrow down the choice and stick with one set of irons. I spent three days on the range hitting approximately 1800 balls to make my comparison.

  • Distance : I averaged 3-4 yards extra distance with the Ping S59 blades. When practicing, I laser my targets with my Bushnell 500 laser. There was no comparison on distance, as the S59 clearly were the longer irons.
  • Ball Flight : My S59 blades come with Ping Tour Staff custom-shafted shafts to create a lower, more boring ball flight, and to accommodate my faster swing speed. Although the ball flight was slightly lower, I really compliment these irons as they maintained consistent ballflight even on mishits. This was a surprise even to myself. The MP33, even with their great feel and control, did not perform to this consistent level - not even close. Even amateur golfers realize the importance of consistency in any club. Consistency builds confidence in your shots. I purposely hit hundreds of fades , draws , punch shots , and mishits close to the toe and heel to evaluate the feel, consistency, and control of these irons. The club had remarkable recovery (for off-center hits) at most areas of the clubface (minus the hosel shank ).
  • Looks : Look really doesn't matter when it comes to performance, but if you're one who cares about the look, these clubs could be more cosmetically pleasing. The sand blasting on the bottom half of the irons is unattractive (why would they do this?). The weighted insert on the back of the iron could be mounted better. No matter how unattractive, this iron performs very well.

As a first-generation iron, I'm very interested in seeing the continuing improvements on this model. However, there really is something unique about these irons. First, you can not find any set of irons on the market that look or feel like them. This says a lot, considering the market is saturated with duplicity in look, feel, and performance.

Second, the Ping clubs always keep their value as the Ping manufacturer doesn't cannibalize their own products by too quickly flooding the market with excessive models. This makes good business sense and translates into good value for the owner of any Ping clubs.

The S59 irons combine tradition and technology to provide you with a high-performing blade in your choice of two finishes. The new S59 Tour model (above) has a brushed/polished finish with a ferrule for a classic look, while the standard S59 model has a blasted/brushed finish and no ferrule.

The S59 features a bar across the cavity which produces a solid feel and distance control. The center of gravity, which is closer to the face, creates a penetrating trajectory. A thin top line and cambered sole ensure confidence and easy alignment, and the small cavity adds forgiveness on mishits.

I tested several sets of irons yesterday.MP32's, MP60's, Taylormade LT2's and the Pings.I came away very surprised. The S59's are going to be in my bag this spring.Very forgiving,Great feel and distance with a boring trajectory.Pictures don't do these irons justice at all.Not as downright beautiful as the Mizunos but a very good looking iron to say the least.

One of the most solid irons I have ever hit!!!! There is nothing I dislike about this club.

Solid irons! Played them most of last year & the only thing i can fault (just a little) is lacking the forged iron feel.

My sister bought me set of these last year. never thought I'd ever used anything but forged. but after 2 rounds with these I'll die with these in my bag and I'm not even 50 yet

Are there any differences specwise other then the ferrule and polishing between the Tour S59 and the regular one?

Has anyone tried the new PING S58 irons yet. Any feedback would be great.

  • 2 weeks later...

They're good irons, I have them. But if you have trouble getting the ball in the air, these are not your irons. They go pretty low, which is good in the shorter irons, but punishes some people in the longer irons.

Can anyone do a comparison between the s59 and the s58? Just looking at the Ping website a lot of their staffers are still playing the s59 and I was wondering if there was a reason. The s59's are certainly available now at much lower prices than the s58's or i5's.

Just put these in the bag last week, and it was the begining of a great relationship. These clubs feel so pure, despite them not being forged. They provide great feedback, and are more forgiving than expected. I got these clubs to provide me more accuracy and workablility...they have answered the calling.

I sold my G5 Pings and got a set of these (blue dot, 1/4" over) and have never in my life hit better iron shots. Absolutely amazing. The Nippon pro 950GH stiff shafts are also the best iron shafts I have used. Much easier to hit then the G5's IMHO and far more consistent on distance and accuracy.

Josey1

I put these clubs in the bag last season a little iffy because they werent forged. I hit the ball low threw some rifle 6.0 flighted in these couldnt be happier throwin darts all day the only downside on the clubs is nothing best irons ive ever hit i suggest these irons to anyone thinking of going to a blade

I've always liked muscle back type irons (eg. Muirfields). The X shafts let me really go at the ball without the fear of a snap hook. Very solid feel with decent feedback on missed hits. The minimal offset, thin top line and smallish blade makes for a nice look. A1+.

I might sound nuts, but the s59 feels better to me than the 58. I am going to get the s59's over the 58's. It would not matter to me if the 59's were more expensive. I can't hit a bad shot with them. I agree with the previous post that says you can feel it if you get out on the toe, but you don't get punished like you would with other player's irons when you do. I have J33 CB's, and while they are great clubs, you will pay for toe hits.

I am getting the 59's. I still can't believe how forgiving and good-feeling they are.

  • 6 months later...

These are the best of both worlds. They look like an iron should and have some forgiveness built in. You can work the ball or swing away. I have been a Ping fan for a long time but have other sets I play also. My favorite set of all time would have to be the Taylor Made Tour Preferred irons of the late eighties, a cast club that feels similar to a forged iron but looks like a players blade.

As far as the S59 goes it plays a bit longer than most 'blade' irons I have hit. I hit it high and can knock it down when needed. If you like the look of a blade but need something easy to hit this is the one.

I just bought mine, used...what a steal. You can still buy them new for 800, and yes, they are worth that. I just got lucky and found a set in good shape that were used a couple years. I played I-3 blades for a long time, but wanted a new set of irons with more feel, more ability to shape shots, and less bounce. The S59's were the answer to my prayer. I did not think I would ever give up my I-3 set, but the way the S59 feels and the way the ball flies, convinced me. I hit them longer than the I-3's and more accurately across the board. When I hit a draw, it draws, when I hit a fade, it fades. I get more confident with them every time I go out now.

Not the prettiest irons but solid and reliable. Everytime I tried to buy new clubs I'd always keep the s59 and when the honeymoon was over with the new clubs I'd sell them and go back to the S59s. Easy to hit blade, not clunky at address and it's a good transition club from CB's to true blades. Shafted with the lighter zz65 stiff shaft it will allow for higher club head speed and launch the ball slight higher than the TT DG S300. I've also hit the s58, s57 and s56 and the difference is minimal other than the added tungsten weight at the toe to provide a bit more forgiveness.

I just recently bought a set of s59's.. now in 2012 they are considered "classics" but i love them. Before this set i had titleist forged 670, 690, 710mb, taylormade mb, mc, KZG III, ben hogan apex, honmas, miuras, and most recently mizuno mp 69s... so i know a good feeling club.. and i've stuck with s59 because i've had the best results with them. If i were to judge on look, i wouldnt have gotten the s59, but i was excited at how easily i was able to shape shots and control my trajectory.I have my s59s shafted with true temper black gold stiff shafts.. The feeling of a pured shot can resemble one from a honma or miura forged club.. no joke.

aquateal10

I keep buying new set and i keep going back to the s59s. They last forever and they are a very forgiving blade. I get great spin on them and they are very strait!

I have owned most Ping models, the Eye 2's, Zings, I5's, I10's, I20 and I25, the S59, S56,and S55. Of all these I've found the S59 my favourites. Almost no offset, boring flight and sit just right for me behind the ball. Plan to get these refurbished at Ping and keep playing them. I've also had my share of forged and don't feel they hit any smoother than the S59. Generally looked prettier but don't (for me) play any better. Nothing harder wearing than the earlier Pings either. I have ZZ65 in mine 2-pw. I played off +2 to 1 for 30 years+. Sometimes a club just feels right. These are one of those.

How much to refurbish?

They have small heads and I believe the soles are low bounce. The lofts are also quite retro now. Not an obvious choice for a high handicapper - if you're looking for classic Pings which are more modern than your Eye 2s then almost all models out there will be a better fit than the S series - pretty much any G and most i iterations.

Ping S59 Irons Review – What Handicap Are They for? Are They Forgiving?

s59 tour irons

“The Ping S59 irons are, in my opinion, the most forgiving irons in the now defunct S series.”

That is worth noting because the entire S series was Ping’s first foray into the bladed player’s performance iron market.

Ping S59 Irons Overview

“The Ping S59 irons were the first of their generation. They were the first S series irons and it shows.”

What I mean is that Ping’s very first bladed performance irons still bore a lot of the game improvement aura that Ping was known for. Before the S series, Ping was known for their game improvement clubs. So it’s understandable that the Ping S59’s, their first player’s performance model, would feel a bit more like a GI set.

And despite the short blade length, compact heads, thin top lines and narrow soles, the Ping S59’s actually look a bit more like GI irons as well. They feature a fairly deep cavity back that is filled with a stabilizing bar. The purpose of the bar is to help smooth out harsh vibration and provide more stability on mis-hits.

Indeed, I felt like the Ping S59’s did a really good job of muting side spin on my slight mis-hits. And there was no jolt up my forearm when I missed the sweet spot. Again, this is what makes the Ping S59 feel more like GI irons in my opinion.

I really appreciated the brushed satin finish of these irons too. The brushed steel doesn’t produce any glare in direct sunlight and it gives these clubs a more unique look compared to traditional polished chrome irons. The cavity back does help increase MOI and indeed, the Ping S59 irons did a good job of keeping my slight mis-hits on-line.

The trajectory wasn’t very reminiscent of GI irons though. The Ping S59’s want to launch low. And while this is likely to benefit faster swing speed players, it could be a problem for players who struggle to get the ball in the air.

Are the Ping S59 Irons Forgiving?

“The Ping S59’s are certainly the most forgiving irons in the S series.”

I found that all but the most heinous mis-hits were staying on-line relatively well. In fact, I hit a couple of wide draws that should have been slices. It was quite remarkable actually. Despite the compact head shape and short blade length, I felt that I could use the entire face and not get punished mightily for it.

But unlike other entries into the S series, the Ping S59’s don’t have progressive weighting. So you are more or less relegated to a low, boring launch. Again, that’s not inherently a bad thing; but it is likely to  be a hindrance for players who are seeking forgiveness chiefly.

Another feature that’s worth noting in terms of forgiveness is the cambered sole. If you play from the rough a lot, you are going to want an iron that feels smooth through the cabbage. I found that I was able to make solid, clean contact in the rough with the Ping S59’s. The cambered sole seems to brush down the tall grass and leaves the entire face available for contact.

Are the Ping S59 Irons Good for Beginners & High Handicappers?

s59 tour irons

“They are the best S series irons for beginners and high handicappers; but still not excellent.”

That’s because most beginners and high handicappers won’t be able to compensate for the small head design. The Ping S59 irons do have progressive offset; but it is still pretty minimal in the long irons where it matters most.

I can imagine that beginners and high handicap players will have trouble turning the club over with the Ping S59’s. But as long as you are moderately accurate with your swing, the Ping S59’s will give you a lot of leeway. You can miss the sweet spot consistently and get straighter flight than you’re likely used to as a high handicapper or beginner.

Should you Buy the Ping S59’s or the S55’s?

“The S55 irons are true player’s performance irons.”

The S55’s are a full four models removed from the Ping S59’s and a lot changed. First of all, the S55’s have even less offset than the Ping S59’s. The blade is also more compact and the lofts are slightly stronger.

If you are looking for forgiveness, the Ping S59 irons are clearly the better choice. The Ping S55 irons are more for single-digit handicappers.

Ping S59 – First Impressions

s59 tour irons

“My first impression of the Ping S59 irons was that the cavity was pretty deep.”

I guess I’m just not used to cavity blade irons but there seemed to be a lot going on in those cavernous cavities. The stabilizing bar gives the cavities a sort of busy look. To me, if you’re looking at the Ping S59 irons from the back, they look like typical GI cavity back irons.

Ping S59 Selling Points

  • Good forgiveness from a blade iron
  • Looks great at address
  • Feels smooth on mis-hits
  • Stabilizing bar in the cavity

Who are the Ping S59 Irons for?

s59 tour irons

“The Ping S59 irons would be good for players in the 15-22 handicap range.”

There is certainly enough forgiveness in these irons for experienced high handicappers. But mid handicappers will especially love the lower flight. In fact, these are excellent irons for strong swingers with fast tempos as well.

The S Family of Irons

The Ping S57 irons offer similar forgiveness as the Ping S59’s; but with more of a player’s performance feel. The S57 irons have blunted leading edges which, like the Ping S59’s, gives them very good turf interaction on any lie. The S57’s also have tungsten weights in the soles and toes so stability on mis-hits is excellent. The “V” shaped soles of the Ping S57 irons make it easier to square up to the ball at impact.

Ping s59 iron review: a comprehensive look [updated mar 2024].

If you’re an avid golfer, you know that the right set of irons can make or break the game . When it comes to choosing the perfect set, there are a lot of factors to consider, including performance, playability, and design. That’s why we’ve taken the time to review the Ping S59 Iron , a popular option among golfers of all levels. In this comprehensive review, we’ll explore the features and performance of the Ping S59 Iron and help you determine whether it’s the right choice for you.

Technology and Design

Let’s start by taking a closer look at the technology and design that make the Ping S59 Iron stand out from other irons on the market. One feature that sets this iron apart is its precision-milled faces, which offer consistent ball speeds and better control. The iron is also designed with a muscle-back construction, which provides greater feel and feedback on each shot. Ping S59 Irons

Ping s59 irons , user reviews.

What is going on ? I bought these irons to hit only on the range as a way to improve my swing.Thinking I would be hitting a lot of thin shots, slices & fat shots I was absolutely stunned how great they played.I shoot in the nineties and am usualy super inconsistant. The completely wrong golfers for these type of blades right? WRONG.The thin top line exudes confidence they are lighter and the blade club head just makes me feel like I am going to smash the ball.I have used them 3 times on course and love these clubs. The long irons are the big difference I hit the 3 iron 220 no slice just a clean hit nearly every time. Now with my G2s with the thick sole I cannot do that even once. This sounds crazy but for me these blades are more forgiving and the long irons much easier to hit. I am still pulling a few left but not as many as I was.Get rid of the super fat super offset clubs and give these babies a whirl.Man I am loving the clean hits I get with these clubs.I sold my G2s and these were in the bag after 1 practice session. My bad shots are still quite good and better than my game improvement clubs. Go the blades !!

Well after a very long search and some poor golf I have found a very good iron for my game. Love the looks, feel and playability. Much more forgiving than they appear to be. I have played five rounds with these irons and all have been under par! I had been switching a lot early this year and could not find anything in the easier to hit irons that I could stomach and get good feel from. These irons are quite long too. If you like blades but want more forgivness and are a ping fan these might be just the ticket. I plan to play this set for a very long time.

Most if not all

By far the best ping irons made! i have been playing these clubs for 3 years now and i never want them to leave the bag. They can do anything you need them to do. find a good used set and buy them over the s-58 or 57's

1 of my weights fell out and i sent it in the fixed it for me no charge.

ping I3 blades

Absolutely love these clubs, switched from callaway x-16 pro series, I hit these pings way better, first round out with them I shot 76 and I am normally about a 12 handicap, cant wait to use them all summer, scratch here I come

I have finally found an iron that is perfect for my game. I'm not quite good enough for a forged muscle back. I've shot low 70's with such a club but I had those 4-5 shots where it hurts me too much to justify keeping them in the bag. Enter the Ping S59's. Smaller head and higher COG for workability and a lower ball flight. But just enough forgiveness to bail me out a few times per round. Very appealing at set-up with good enough feel to get me by. Not like forged, but close. Another plus is they wear very well. The blasted head and brushed finish give a good look and great durability. The lightweight stiff ZZ65 shafts worried me at first. I'm a pretty strong guy and was concerned about ballooning shots and a whippy feel. No worries now. Great performing shaft. If you're looking for a club that falls in the middle of the forged muscle back and player cavity group, I cannot imagine a better iron out there for you. These will definitely get the 8-9 handicapper down to a 4-5, provided you practice...;) Great job, Ping!!!

Never needed.

Mizuno MP-33, Titleist 695.CB, Titleist 731PM, Ping I3 'blades' (yeah right) and Snake Eyes FMC-1.

Tried a S58 demo club and liked it. Bought a set of S59's off Ebay; 3-PW, Z-Z65 for £101 ($150) in great condition. Took them straight to my club without trying them and shot a 76 (4 over and I play off 9). Only used 5-PW but found them easier to hit than I expected. I am not a great iron player at all. Usually suffer from ballooning and not a good player in the wind, the trajectory off these clubs is fantastic for me and they are longer than my G10's; this must be the Z-Z65 shafts. Played a few times with them and shot a 79 as well. They are set at Blue dot and I normally play a red dot so these are 3 degrees too upright so I aim right for a draw/hook. They should be better whem I get them set up. Not too harsh on the hands, sometimes go a lot further than I expect (i.e. 6 iron normally 160, hit one 180 over the green) but overall a great club, you get a nice ball to turf contact with them. Not a true blade and players up to 15 should hit them well. My playing partners would say I am a poor ball striker but as you can guess I love these clubs and have played under and around my handicap. Build quality is very good and they should last for years. Z-Z65 hits a lot lower flight than the CS-Lite or AST shafts, would suit those who want a more penetrating flight, like links players or those like me who hit a high ball. Overall a great set of irons.

Absolutely first class. Sent my Tour wedges in for adjustment, they cracked one so I got a brand new club back.

Ping Eye 2+, i3 O-size, i3 blade, i5, G5, G10, MX-20, 804's.

I have never really been a big fan of Ping clubs untill I tried the Ping S59's a friend had. I could not believe how nice they looked at address, with a thin top line (Nearly as thin as my Taylormade RAC TP MB) When you strike the ball with them the feeling is excellent. My 1st set of clubs were Cobra SS Forged, so the S59's Forged gives the same sort of feel. I bought mine 2nd hand from a guy near Mill Hill Golf Club in London. I left his house and went stragith to the Mill Hill course and played 11 holes, and had 4 Birdies. I had forgotten how it felt to hit the green in regulation to give yourself a birdie chance. I have tried tons of clubs and for me these beat the lot. Nice weight and great feeling of the face. Hunt them out and see what I mean ;-)

Unknown as bought 2nd hand in London, UK

I have been playing with Taylormade RAC TP MB (Muscle Back Blades) but for some reason I have lost all confidence with them ....

Bought these on ebay for $320.00, bargain! Found them to be forgiving and so easy to control ball flight and distance. The lighter weight of the zz65 shafts is perfect for generating clubhead speed whilst maintaing control. Highly reccomend for the stronger player.

Wilson Deep Red Tour, Hogan Apex Plus, Maxfli Australian Blades.

wow been playing these for a year tried to switch back to taylormade tungstun titanium bubble irons and old Ping model and there is absolutely no comparison. Easily one of the best irons to look at during address and the feel is incredible. Great feedback. I will not be hitting anything else for quite sometime.

Ping is always great

Taylormade TI bubble 2, Ping Eye 2, Wilson Staff blades (early models), Cobra, and Callaway.

Ok, this is my 3rd season with the S59's, and my second set, so I know a little bit about them. My first set was used and had Rifle shafts. I liked them quite a bit, but always found the ball flight to be a bit low for my liking. At the end of last year, I ordered a new set of S59's (it's cool that Ping still offers their classic models) 4-PW with the Ping CS Lite shaft. I absolutely love the feel more so than ever and my ball flight has returned to a mid-high ball flight. Distance control is phenomenal and I really like the traditional lofts. They are not the softest clubs around, but players using these clubs should be hitting the sweet spot the majority of the time. I can't fault the clubs. They look great and perform to the highest standards. I feel they are some of Ping's best irons to date and because they are cast, this set will last me for a loooong time.

Ping is great.

  1. Ping S59 Tour Model Better Player Irons Review

Ping S59 Tour Model Irons.

  3. Ping S59 Irons: Review of the Popular Blade Golf Clubs

The Ping S59 irons, sometimes called the Ping S59 blades because they were the most blade-like irons Ping made when they were first released, remain popular as a used set today. In fact, although they first appeared in 2003, Bubba Watson was still using them on the PGA Tour as late as 2013. That's a lot of time passed in the world of major golf manufacturer equipment.
