Cinéma «The Life of Chuck»: une vie comme un univers
«the life of chuck»: une vie comme un univers.
Bien que celle-ci se soit depuis longtemps ouverte à des horizons littéraires variés, l’oeuvre de Stephen King continue, dans l’imaginaire collectif, d’être surtout associée à l’épouvante. Après tout, ne le surnomme-t-on pas encore le maître de l’horreur ? Tiré de sa nouvelle The Life of Chuck , le film du même nom fait partie de ces récits rappelant non seulement la polyvalence de King, mais aussi son absolu brio et sa réelle sensibilité. Adapté par Mike Flanagan, en une troisième collaboration avec l’écrivain, The Life of Chuck comptait parmi la poignée de premières mondiales les plus attendues au Festival international du film de Toronto .
Le scénario de Mike Flanagan ( Gerald’s Game / Jessie ; Doctor Sleep ) demeure fidèle à la nouvelle, autant sur le plan de l’intrigue que de la construction. De fait, comme la source, le film contient trois chapitres présentés en ordre décroissant, du troisième au premier.
Ce parti pris est loin d’être une coquetterie : il est fondamental pour réellement apprécier ce que King et maintenant Flanagan ont à offrir.
À l’instar de précédentes adaptations cinématographiques comme Stand by Me ( Compte sur moi ) et The Shawshank Redemption ( À l’ombre de Shawshank ), une narration ponctuelle se fait en outre entendre. À la différence que celle de The Life of Chuck , gracieuseté de Nick Offerman, est livrée sourire en coin, ce qui empêche le film de devenir trop lourd ou solennel.
Chapitre un : Marty Anderson (Chiwetel Ejiofor), un enseignant, envisage la fin du monde vraisemblablement toute proche, chaque jour, voire chaque heure, amenant son lot de catastrophes naturelles sans précédent. Or, alors que sourd la rumeur de l’anéantissement, d’incessantes — et ubiquistes — publicités, célèbrent un mystérieux Chuck Krantz (Tom Hiddleston). Avec son ex-conjointe (Karen Gillan), Marty voit la Voie lactée s’éteindre — une absolument séquence saisissante.
Chapitre deux : Quelques mois plus tôt, mû par un souvenir fugace, ledit Chuck Krantz, un comptable, se met spontanément à danser en pleine rue. Une jeune inconnue (Annalise Basso) se joint à lui…
Chapitre trois : Enfant, Chuck (Cody Flanagan puis Jacob Tremblay) est élevé par ses grands-parents (Mia Sara et Mark Hamill) après le décès de ses parents. D’abord inconsolable, sa grand-mère retrouve sa joie de vivre en renouant avec la danse : passion qu’elle transmet à son petit-fils.
Ces grandes lignes pourront sembler décousues, mais elles tissent au contraire une trame ingénieuse sertie de motifs récurrents : répliques du présent trouvant leur origine dans le passé ; lieux revisités (comme cette porte au grenier qu’il ne faut pas ouvrir) ; références au calendrier cosmique, aux mathématiques, aux étoiles (« La plus belle équation de l’univers », dixit le grand-père comptable de Chuck) ; personnages reparaissant d’un chapitre à l’autre d’une manière qui paraîtra initialement insensée…
C’est voulu.

Une simple vie
En effet, le concept de la nouvelle et du film, que l’on taira, constitue une émouvante illustration de la pensée exprimée par Walt Whitman dans son poème Chant de moi-même , qui revient comme un leitmotiv dans l’histoire :
« Le passé et le présent se fanent] je les ai remplis, je les ai vidés. Et m’apprête à remplir mon prochain repli de l’avenir.
Toi là-haut qui m’écoutes ! Qu’as-tu à me confier ?
Regarde-moi au visage pendant que j’aspire l’approche furtive du soir,
(Parle sincèrement, personne d’autre ne t’écoute et je ne reste plus qu’une minute.)
Suis-je en contradiction avec moi-même ? Alors c’est parfait, je me contredis (Je suis vaste, je contiens des multitudes). »
Qu’entendait le poète par « je contiens des multitudes » ? Dans le Chapitre un, une enseignante du genre de celles pouvant marquer un parcours de vie (Kate Siegel), l’explique à un tout jeune Chuck. Cette séquence est en l’occurrence la clé de voûte pour comprendre tout le film, pour élucider chacun de ses mystères. Ce passage est d’autant plus satisfaisant qu’il est totalement logique et organique.
Il s’agit également du seul moment « explicatif » que se permet le film. De fait, et on lui en sait gré, Flanagan, comme King, s’en remet à l’intelligence du public pour déchiffrer ce qui doit l’être. À cet égard, si révélation finale il y a (qu’y a-t-il derrière la fameuse porte ?), celle-ci relève davantage du proverbial arbre qui cache la forêt. En cela que l’essentiel réside ailleurs.
Ainsi The Life of Chuck débute-t-il par l’infiniment grand pour mieux remonter jusqu’à l’infiniment petit : d’un côté, les multitudes, et de l’autre, une vie, une simple vie.
Un amour atemporel
Coïncidence, We Live in Time , de John Crowley ( Brooklyn ), une autre première mondiale, partage quelques points communs avec The Life of Chuck : le temps qui nous est compté, une structure non linéaire… L’histoire ne saurait en revanche être plus différente. On y suit Tobias et Almut (Andrew Garfield et Florence Pugh, complices, magnétiques) à trois époques alternées qui se répondent ou se font écho. Dans un savant désordre, on assiste à la rencontre et aux débuts du couple, à la conception puis à la naissance de leur fille et, enfin, aux myriades de répercussions causées par le cancer dont est atteinte Almut. Sachant cela, on aurait pu craindre un drame sentimental sirupeux aux accents mélodramatiques. Or, il n’en est rien. Prenant à l’évidence pour modèle, à tout le moins en partie, le classique Terms of Endearment ( Tendres passions ), de James L. Brooks, We Live in Time infuse énormément d’humour aux situations. On rit donc beaucoup, ce qui n’empêche pas les larmes de rouler sur les joues.
