Just like Diamond and Elephant, Rias has a specific set of people that it caters to and this is the drivers aged 50 above. RIAS believes that drivers above 50 are more experienced and should pay less to insure their cars. Some of the covers offered are the onward travel cover, the wrong fuel cover, windscreen cover, etc. The customer care reviews are good and fast. The insurance company has access to the award winning claims service that Ageas Insurance Ltd provides and has also been given the 5 star award by Defaqto. One bad side is that the business and van insurance policies are not offered. However, the insurance company is recommended.

Breakdown cover at Rias

For £39.99 per year, Rias provides breakdown cover and it comes in three levels:

  • roadside assistance which includes 24/7 roadside repair and assistance
  • comprehensive gold: this includes roadside assistance and nationwide assistance
  • total protection: this includes roadside assistance, nationwide assistance and onward travel for 31 days and vehicles up to 10 years old.

Keycare cover at Rias

For a sum of £20.00 a year, Rias car insurance policy offers key protection to its customers. This protection comes with £1,500 of cover, including VAT and other services such as:

  • reprogramming of alarms and the replacement security safe keys for safety purposes
  • 24/7 assistance
  • £75 a day for alternative means of transportation in the case that you are stranded as a result of a stolen or damaged key.

Windscreen cover at Rias

The windscreen cover is already included in the comprehensive cover but for the third party, or third party fire and theft cover, payment for the repair or replacement of the windscreen would have to be made by the owner of the car. Claim on windscreen, window or sunroof doesn’t affect NCB.

Motor legal protection at Rias

For £29.60, Rias’s Motor Legal Protection policy provides:

  • £100,000 cover for the driver, passengers and the car in the case of an accident caused by an insured and identifiable person
  • legal fees, advice and support
  • uninsured loss covering
  • personal injury cover.

Personal policy injury available at Rias

For £26.50 per annum, Rias offers the following as part of their Personal Injury Cover:

  • £30,000 for bodily injuries as a result of an accident in the insured vehicle
  • £5,000 in the case than insured person aged 16 or under dies as a result of an accident in the insured vehicle
  • cover for permanent total body disablement as a result of an accident in the vehicle
  • cover to loss of sight in both eyes as a result of an accident in the vehicle.

Coverage abroad at Rias

Rias’s abroad coverage is available and this coverage allows the holders to travel through Europe for about 90 days. The list of countries includes:

Andorra, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Republic of Cyprus, Republic of Ireland, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland.

For £26.50 a year, the following are offered with the replacement cover provided by Rias:

  • a hire car with a similar engine size of up to 2,000cc, for 21 days
  • a hire car if the accident was the fault of the driver.

No-Claim Bonus (NCB) at Rias

The longer you go without making a claim, the larger the discount accrued. Every type of insurance policy (third party only, third party fire and theft, and fully comprehensive) can accumulate a no claims bonus.

The bonus accrued per year are as follows: One year NCB – 2% Two years NCB – 14% Three years NCB – 16% Four years NCB – 26% Five years NCB – 27% Six years NCB – 27% Seven years NCB – 30% Eight years NCB – 33% Nine years NCB or more – 37%

The no claims discount will not be affected if the only claims made are for a broken windscreen, window or sunroof glass or for replacement locks or keys.

At Rias, you can apply for the NCB protection. The NCB protection allows you to make a certain number of claims within a period without losing your No-Claim bonus.

NCB protection claims (number per year): 2 claims in 3 years.

Good to know

A No-Claim bonus is a reward that you get from driving during a long time (at least one year) without making any claim. The more years you drive without claims, the higher your NCB rate gets hence the higher the discount on your insurance premium.

How to claim at Rias?

To make a car insurance claim, you can do it by calling Rias directly.

How to cancel your car insurance at Rias?

You can always cancel your car insurance policy at any time. However, some fees may apply especially if you cancel it after the 14 cooling-off period after your contract's anniversary date.

Since car insurance is a legal requirement, Rias as well as other insurers will renew your policy automatically at the end of the policy period without any notification from your side. However, Rias has the obligation to send you a renewal notice within 7 to 21 days before your contract comes to an end. You will therefore have 14 days - the cooling off period - to cancel your policy at reduced cancellation fees.

For the same reason, if you cancel your car insurance policy, you must sign up to a new one immediately. Find out more on car insurance legal requirement .

You would need to have various documents ready such as:

  • your policy number (right hand corner of your documents);
  • your bank details; and
  • your payment method in case there are cancellation fees.

Rias could also refuse to cover your car any longer if you don't pay for your premiums within the time allocated, or if they find out that you omitted important information that was required by the company such as your driving experience or you if have committed a fraud of any kind. This act is known as ‘fronting’.

Ridiculous wait time to talk to an advisor.

Three attempts now to speak to an advisor. On every occasion, the wait time has been 30mins! It’s utterly shocking that companies think waiting on the phone for that long is acceptable, especially when you are working. If you need to be able to speak to someone, I would look elsewhere.

Mis-sold! Be careful if you consider taking out a policy as cancellation fees issued ! We took a policy out and were asked to provide evidence of our substantial no claims which we did only to be told they wouldn’t accept it as was being used on another policy. No claims is no claims regardless of how many insurance policies we have. Not paying any more so told them to cancel at which they issue a cancellation fee!!

Appallingly bad service from NCB staff who obviously need to go to specsavers!!

Where do I start. I’ve purchased car insurance for 46 years with little irritations but by golly RIAS are the absolute pits. My husband has 10 years NCB up to last year when he retired. Staff at RIAS have some sort of ulterior motive because for over 10 days we have been bombarded that if we don't provide the correct letters we will be cancelled! Got in touch with SAGA and sent RIAS direct from SAGA to confirm exactly what was stated. Today we received yet another threatening email warning us that we have 2 days to provide the information that the youngish we talking woman requested on the phone??? Frustratingly bad and on looking at the reviews it is obvious the staff in the NCB cannot read legal information from an insurer. Everything is on the computer nowadays so not sure what RIAS are doing but they are not providing 1% customer service only 99% threats that the complaints team will know!

Utterly horrendous business with no…

Utterly horrendous business with no absolutely grasp of customer service whatsoever. Somewhere there has been an error claiming my car has 8 years NCD (all along I'd only claimed and confirmed it had 1). Then asked for proof of no claims which I duly sent (proof was the renewal from GoSkippy stating amongst other things 1 yr NCD). Then dragging it out so I was nearly outside of the 14 days distancde selling protection said the proof I'd sent was not good enough (proof clearly had 1 yr on it). Fortunately GoSkippy had kindly emailed a proof of NCD in the meantime so I sent this. Then after waiting to the days after 14 days protection ended emailed to say they have "discovered my actual NCD is 1 year" which I'd stated and proved all along. Now they want hundreds of extra pounds and are applying admin fees. I've now little choice to let them rob me of this money and cancel the insurance. Despite the robbing I'm receiving it is cheaper to cancel and go back to GoSkippy than pay what theyre demanding. Never again will I thouvh this company with a bargepole!!

Worst customer service I have ever experienced

Worst customer service I have experienced. Would not even give one star if I had the option. I insured my car with RIAS after seeing their acceptable quote on motor car insurance compare. I paid premium before the start date of policy and within a couple of days had a telephone call from them advising me that as I had given the wrong year of purchase of my car they they had to increase the premium by nearly £50. I had inadvertently put the purchase year as 2019 instead of 2022. Now has anyone ever had an increase of premium of nearly £50 beca use the year of purchase was 3 years out. Their reason was that as I had only had the car for 3 years I was not so experienced with driving it as I would have been if I had purchased the car in 5 years. They had the information from DVLA. If they did this check on me without having a claim, what would they do to avoid paying a claim if I had a bump. I told them that I wasn't in a position that I could trust them even if I paid the additional premium of £50 and cancelled the policy for which they charged me short term cover of nearly £30 for a few days cover. DON'T TOUCH WITH A BARGEPOLE IS MY ADVICE.

Go Elsewhere

I’ve used Rias for a couple of years now for building and contents insurance and my premiums have been much the same. I changed to ‘auto renewal’ last year and now, without any communication of my renewal or details of premium (due in 5 days time) they have already charged my card and the premium has doubled!! I have made no claims with them or any other insurance company for over 20 years. A quick check online shows I can obtain an identical/better policy for what I paid last year, so needless to say I have cancelled but they still get to keep my money for 3-5 days whilst they refund. Nice business model if you can get away with it.

I bought travel insurance which stated…that personal items were covered. I did not think that my laptop bag items were not personal

I bought travel insurance which stated all personal items are covered. My laptop bag with a very expensive laptop and some other items got stolen. I made a claim to RIAS and they deferred my claim to Taurus who declined my claim. I have been fleeced by RIAS insurance and therefore this review.

Massive Increase is Premium Year on Year.

Just had our house insurance renewed and it has gone up 117% on last year's cost. We were away on holiday when this happened and did not notice the large increase before it was actioned. Our fault, but how they can justify such an increase over last year without any claims against our policy in mind-blowing. We will be removing our business from RIAS in due course despite being a customer for many many years. Truely awful treatment by the company - be warned.

DO NOT BUY A RIAS POLICY - This is why...

It's only 1 star because I cant give less! We had the policy, we had a huge accident in the house, we made a claim and that's where the trouble started! RIAS were slow to react, caused additional damage through their MONTHS of delay. We made a complaint which their independently appointed solicitors upheld. Well over a year following the initial claim we finally settled. A week later RIAS wrote to us cancelling the policy. Then they had the nerve to charge a Policy Cancellation fee. None of this is emotion, it's pure fact - they are useless in every respect. They care for nothing except taking money from customers. They don't want to pay out on claims. They do everything possible to claw back tiny sums wherever they can. DO NOT BUY A POLICY FROM RIAS, you will be disappointed and have to fight for what is rightfully yours. Find an honest insurer instead.

Worst customer service I have…

Worst customer service I have experienced. Would not even give one star if I had the option. Waited 5 hours on live chat only to be disconnected, this was after I had held on the phone for god knows how long. Sent 5 emails as I only wanted a question answered, the only reply I received told me I had to call them. Would not recommend this company to anyone, buy your insurance elsewhere.

Profiteering or just theft?

Profiteering or just theft? Having been with RIAS for many many years I find that this year their parent company, Ageas, are gouging more profits from loyal customers than ever before. My house insurance has gone up by 300% from £287 to £839! When I challenged the quote they, unashamedly, say it is correct and is competative, but refuse to document any valid reasoning for such a rise. They obviously fail to understand what the word loyalty means.... goodbye and let's watch their share prices and company profit drop through the floor when others realise they are just part of a profiteering scam!

Insurance gone up 33% this year. My parents have been with this company for years. My elderly and recently widowed mother can't afford the new quote. I rang up on her behalf and they said no discounts were available. I found a better policy with the AA for £100 cheaper. The moral is if you don't look after your long standing loyal customers they will leave.

Rias are Cowboys they won’t pay

Rias gave me a claim number after arguing about a storm which was one the worst storms we’ve had for 10 years then in the end closed the claim without explanation or contacting me Meanwhile I’d had the repair done and sent them the invoice. They don’t pay up and don’t give you a straight answer. Luckily I managed to get the price down from an original quote of £900 to £250 with a different supplier. I was trying to save Rias money and they didn’t pay anyway. What a bunch of muppets I’m closing my account and will go back to the Halifax Rias are cowboys

I have been with Rias home insurance…

I have been with Rias home insurance for almost 10 years never claimed before until we had storm Babet which damaged some part of my roof and when I claimed I was refused because according to their source we did not have winds that reach 55mph or rain that fell over 25ml in an hour. and the documents they sent out were changed from original. At moment I am left with damaged roof and waiting for Ombudsman to take this further. This company has caused me nothing but stress I would never recommend it... KEEEEEP AWAY from such rip off company

Avoid at all costs

Received an email yesterday advising car insurance would be automatically renewed, even though we did not ask for this regarding it as inertia selling. Tried to ring Rias but gave up after 25 minutes. Sent 3 emails, non of which have been answered. Have contacted bank to ensure Rias cannot access direct debit and have gone back to LV who never gave us this hassle!

Completely inflexible

Completely inflexible. My premium increased by over 50%. They would not even listen to matching quotes from competitors or even rewarding loyalty. I appear to be joining an extremely long list of dissappointed customers. Perhaps the insurance ombudsman might take a look at their sharp practises.

Was with Rias Home insurance for…

Was with Rias Home insurance for several years until they hiked up my premium so left. Went back to them this year because the quote and cover was excellent. Just had my renewal notice for next year and they've increased my premium by 47%. £80 Rediculous increase (No claims made). Will find someone else for 2023/24

Easy to buy but hard to cancel

Update 16.3.22 After a bit of to and fro, when they initially denied getting my email, RIAS has finally refunded my entire premium. I have amended my stars accordingly. I bought insurance from RIAS online. However, when i received the link to the documents, I discovered that despite taking out accidental loss, the buildings insurance did not cover storm damage to fences and sheds. I therefore asked them to cancel immediately. I'm waiting to hear the response. Will update when i have had a reply. I couldn't contact them by phone as my mobile signal was out.

Awful, I looked at the wrong bit of…

I looked at the wrong bit of Trustpilot, not the travel insurance and it looked good. They have taken my money but I am unable to log on to get documents. Phoned a contact number which takes you to Axa parent company who have no knowledge of the reference number. I emailed and the email didn't get there, ie sent back. So no way to contact, no way to cancel and no insurance document. A nightmare... updated this morning...spoke to helpful person who has sorted it, same phone number as yesterday, not redirected this time?!

We took a policy out and were asked to provide evidence of our substantial no claims which we did only to be told they wouldn’t accept it as was being used on another policy. No claims is no claims regardless of how many insurance policies we have. Not paying any more so told them to cancel at which they issue a cancellation fee!!

Appallingly bad service from NCB staff who obviously need to go to specsavers!!

Where do I start. I’ve purchased car insurance for 46 years with little irritations but by golly RIAS are the absolute pits. My husband has 10 years NCB up to last year when he retired. Staff at RIAS have some sort of ulterior motive because for over 10 days we have been bombarded that if we don't provide the correct letters we will be cancelled! Got in touch with SAGA and sent RIAS direct from SAGA to confirm exactly what was stated. Today we received yet another threatening email warning us that we have 2 days to provide the information that the youngish we talking woman requested on the phone??? Frustratingly bad and on looking at the reviews it is obvious the staff in the NCB cannot read legal information from an insurer. Everything is on the computer nowadays so not sure what RIAS are doing but they are not providing 1% customer service only 99% threats that the complaints team will know!

Utterly horrendous business with no…

Utterly horrendous business with no absolutely grasp of customer service whatsoever. Somewhere there has been an error claiming my car has 8 years NCD (all along I'd only claimed and confirmed it had 1). Then asked for proof of no claims which I duly sent (proof was the renewal from GoSkippy stating amongst other things 1 yr NCD). Then dragging it out so I was nearly outside of the 14 days distancde selling protection said the proof I'd sent was not good enough (proof clearly had 1 yr on it). Fortunately GoSkippy had kindly emailed a proof of NCD in the meantime so I sent this. Then after waiting to the days after 14 days protection ended emailed to say they have "discovered my actual NCD is 1 year" which I'd stated and proved all along. Now they want hundreds of extra pounds and are applying admin fees. I've now little choice to let them rob me of this money and cancel the insurance. Despite the robbing I'm receiving it is cheaper to cancel and go back to GoSkippy than pay what theyre demanding. Never again will I thouvh this company with a bargepole!!

Worst customer service I have ever experienced

Worst customer service I have experienced. Would not even give one star if I had the option. I insured my car with RIAS after seeing their acceptable quote on motor car insurance compare. I paid premium before the start date of policy and within a couple of days had a telephone call from them advising me that as I had given the wrong year of purchase of my car they they had to increase the premium by nearly £50. I had inadvertently put the purchase year as 2019 instead of 2022. Now has anyone ever had an increase of premium of nearly £50 beca use the year of purchase was 3 years out. Their reason was that as I had only had the car for 3 years I was not so experienced with driving it as I would have been if I had purchased the car in 5 years. They had the information from DVLA. If they did this check on me without having a claim, what would they do to avoid paying a claim if I had a bump. I told them that I wasn't in a position that I could trust them even if I paid the additional premium of £50 and cancelled the policy for which they charged me short term cover of nearly £30 for a few days cover. DON'T TOUCH WITH A BARGEPOLE IS MY ADVICE.

Go Elsewhere

I’ve used Rias for a couple of years now for building and contents insurance and my premiums have been much the same. I changed to ‘auto renewal’ last year and now, without any communication of my renewal or details of premium (due in 5 days time) they have already charged my card and the premium has doubled!! I have made no claims with them or any other insurance company for over 20 years. A quick check online shows I can obtain an identical/better policy for what I paid last year, so needless to say I have cancelled but they still get to keep my money for 3-5 days whilst they refund. Nice business model if you can get away with it.

I bought travel insurance which stated all personal items are covered. My laptop bag with a very expensive laptop and some other items got stolen. I made a claim to RIAS and they deferred my claim to Taurus who declined my claim. I have been fleeced by RIAS insurance and therefore this review.

Massive Increase is Premium Year on Year.

Just had our house insurance renewed and it has gone up 117% on last year's cost. We were away on holiday when this happened and did not notice the large increase before it was actioned. Our fault, but how they can justify such an increase over last year without any claims against our policy in mind-blowing. We will be removing our business from RIAS in due course despite being a customer for many many years. Truely awful treatment by the company - be warned.

DO NOT BUY A RIAS POLICY - This is why...

It's only 1 star because I cant give less! We had the policy, we had a huge accident in the house, we made a claim and that's where the trouble started! RIAS were slow to react, caused additional damage through their MONTHS of delay. We made a complaint which their independently appointed solicitors upheld. Well over a year following the initial claim we finally settled. A week later RIAS wrote to us cancelling the policy. Then they had the nerve to charge a Policy Cancellation fee. None of this is emotion, it's pure fact - they are useless in every respect. They care for nothing except taking money from customers. They don't want to pay out on claims. They do everything possible to claw back tiny sums wherever they can. DO NOT BUY A POLICY FROM RIAS, you will be disappointed and have to fight for what is rightfully yours. Find an honest insurer instead.

Worst customer service I have…

Worst customer service I have experienced. Would not even give one star if I had the option. Waited 5 hours on live chat only to be disconnected, this was after I had held on the phone for god knows how long. Sent 5 emails as I only wanted a question answered, the only reply I received told me I had to call them. Would not recommend this company to anyone, buy your insurance elsewhere.

Profiteering or just theft? Having been with RIAS for many many years I find that this year their parent company, Ageas, are gouging more profits from loyal customers than ever before. My house insurance has gone up by 300% from £287 to £839! When I challenged the quote they, unashamedly, say it is correct and is competative, but refuse to document any valid reasoning for such a rise. They obviously fail to understand what the word loyalty means.... goodbye and let's watch their share prices and company profit drop through the floor when others realise they are just part of a profiteering scam!

Insurance gone up 33% this year. My parents have been with this company for years. My elderly and recently widowed mother can't afford the new quote. I rang up on her behalf and they said no discounts were available. I found a better policy with the AA for £100 cheaper. The moral is if you don't look after your long standing loyal customers they will leave.

Rias are Cowboys they won’t pay

Rias gave me a claim number after arguing about a storm which was one the worst storms we’ve had for 10 years then in the end closed the claim without explanation or contacting me Meanwhile I’d had the repair done and sent them the invoice. They don’t pay up and don’t give you a straight answer. Luckily I managed to get the price down from an original quote of £900 to £250 with a different supplier. I was trying to save Rias money and they didn’t pay anyway. What a bunch of muppets I’m closing my account and will go back to the Halifax Rias are cowboys

I have been with Rias home insurance for almost 10 years never claimed before until we had storm Babet which damaged some part of my roof and when I claimed I was refused because according to their source we did not have winds that reach 55mph or rain that fell over 25ml in an hour. and the documents they sent out were changed from original. At moment I am left with damaged roof and waiting for Ombudsman to take this further. This company has caused me nothing but stress I would never recommend it... KEEEEEP AWAY from such rip off company

Avoid at all costs

Received an email yesterday advising car insurance would be automatically renewed, even though we did not ask for this regarding it as inertia selling. Tried to ring Rias but gave up after 25 minutes. Sent 3 emails, non of which have been answered. Have contacted bank to ensure Rias cannot access direct debit and have gone back to LV who never gave us this hassle!

Completely inflexible

Completely inflexible. My premium increased by over 50%. They would not even listen to matching quotes from competitors or even rewarding loyalty. I appear to be joining an extremely long list of dissappointed customers. Perhaps the insurance ombudsman might take a look at their sharp practises.

Was with Rias Home insurance for several years until they hiked up my premium so left. Went back to them this year because the quote and cover was excellent. Just had my renewal notice for next year and they've increased my premium by 47%. £80 Rediculous increase (No claims made). Will find someone else for 2023/24

Easy to buy but hard to cancel

Update 16.3.22 After a bit of to and fro, when they initially denied getting my email, RIAS has finally refunded my entire premium. I have amended my stars accordingly. I bought insurance from RIAS online. However, when i received the link to the documents, I discovered that despite taking out accidental loss, the buildings insurance did not cover storm damage to fences and sheds. I therefore asked them to cancel immediately. I'm waiting to hear the response. Will update when i have had a reply. I couldn't contact them by phone as my mobile signal was out.

Awful, I looked at the wrong bit of…

I looked at the wrong bit of Trustpilot, not the travel insurance and it looked good. They have taken my money but I am unable to log on to get documents. Phoned a contact number which takes you to Axa parent company who have no knowledge of the reference number. I emailed and the email didn't get there, ie sent back. So no way to contact, no way to cancel and no insurance document. A nightmare... updated this morning...spoke to helpful person who has sorted it, same phone number as yesterday, not redirected this time?!
