Backstreet Boys

The Backstreet Boys are making 2019 feel a lot like 1999 with their DNA World Tour, their biggest trek in 18 years. But while their impressive 33-song set did include every hit any BSB fan could’ve wanted them to sing, it also featured nine of their 12 DNA tracks — and proved that they aren’t just a nostalgia act.

Backstreet Boys

See latest videos, charts and news

The BSB guys (Nick Carter, Howie Dorough, Brian Littrell, AJ McLean and Kevin Richardson) gave it their all for the entire two hours they were on stage at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center Thursday night (Aug. 15), which is even more impressive considering they’ve been performing the show almost every night since May 11. They’ve certainly got it down to a science at this point, but that makes for one hell of a show.

'Millennium' at 20: Collaborators Explain How the Backstreet Boys Album Pushed Technology Limits…

Trending on billboard.

While the DNA World Tour is a spectacle everyone — BSB diehard or not — should see for themselves, Billboard has rounded up some highlights from the show.

The (amazingly) dramatic entrance

After 26 years of playing shows, the Backstreet Boys of course know how to build anticipation before hitting the stage. For the DNA World Tour, screens flashed through the names of the group’s first nine albums, with shots of each member appearing before DNA emerged. Before you knew it, the screen was rising, and the Backstreet Boys have arrived. Try  not  to get chills.

Brian’s all-or-nothing vocals

While all of the guys had their shining moments throughout the show, Littrell’s were extra meaningful. Longtime fans know that Littrell has been struggling with vocal tension dysphonia and dystonia for several years — but that didn’t stop him from going for every run and power note he could once hit painlessly. One of his most striking moments came at the end of “Don’t Want You Back,” when he belted out the song’s soaring finish in almost effortless fashion.

Their solo appearances

BSB masterfully incorporated their  DNA  songs in with their classics, highlighting their individual favorites by giving each member a chance to perform a track on their own. Littrell went first with “Nobody Else”; Dorough later sang “Chateau”; Carter took on “The Way It Was,” and McLean and Richardson teamed up for “Passionate.”

The solo spotlights also gave the guys a chance to connect with the crowd on a deeper level, with each taking a few minutes to thank fans for their support for 26 years. “That doesn’t happen just every day, especially in our world it doesn’t happen hardly at all,” AJ said, with Kevin adding, “This is rare, we know this. And we’re taking in every second and everybody.”

“Chances”

The Backstreet Boys took full advantage of their V-shaped stage, but didn’t typically stay on it for a full song. They did for  DNA  cut “Chances,” though, which may have been part of the reason that the performance was so impactful. But it was certainly also thanks to their dynamic individual vocal parts, as well as their building harmonies on the bridge. Plus, then they proceeded to sing their oh-so-impassioned oldies “Shape of My Heart” and “Drowning” back to back, so it was all a lot for a BSB stan to take in — in the best way, of course.

Their sense of humor

While the guys didn’t save a whole lot of time for banter, when they did, it was hilarious. Sometimes they were knocking themselves — “I used to have at least two abs, now I just have an abstraction,” Richardson quipped during an on-stage changing bit with McLean — and sometimes they were mocking each other (Littrell’s impression of 12-year-old Carter is priceless). But their humility was apparent the whole time, and it was easy to tell that their chemistry is stronger than ever 26 years later.

Going back to their a cappella roots

Those who have listened to  DNA  know that the song “Breathe” is a fully a cappella track. The guys performed it that way too — to “show ’em how we used to do it,” as Howie said — and it was, ironically, one of the most breathtaking parts of the show. Let the video do the rest of the talking on this one:

The fans’ vivacious spirit

Boy bands tend to have some of the most deafening crowds around, but as a boy band fanatic myself, I have to give it to the Backstreet Boys fans: their screams are hands down the loudest of them all. Maybe it’s because the formerly teenage fans are now all grown adults (some even came to the show pregnant, which the guys couldn’t help pointing out) and no longer have shrill ear-piercing screams, but regardless, you could practically feel the place shake at times — especially after songs like “I Want It That Way.”

Their old-school choreo

It wouldn’t be a Backstreet Boys show without some ’90s choreography, right? Though they traded chairs for mic stands for “As Long As You Love Me” and didn’t all have hats for “All I Have to Give,” BSB made sure they paid homage to their iconic dances during the classics. And you bet those Thriller -like moves made their return for “Everybody (Backstreet’s Back).”

The Larger Than Life finale

Reverse from their Larger Than Life Las Vegas residency, BSB finished with their colossal  Milennium  hit, and what an ending it was. Between the mesmerizing stage lighting up with flashing colorful lights, fireworks bursting every other second, and the banging dance remix in the middle of the song, “Larger Than Life” really did feel that way. It was the perfect close to the two-hour show, leaving an undeniable energy in the room that gave the sense that both the Backstreet Boys and their fans are ready for 26 more years.

Backstreet Boys Party Like its 1999 on ‘DNA’ World Tour: The Five Best Moments

US band Backstreet Boys performs during a concert held at Palacio de los Deportes in Madrid, Spain, 13 May 2019.US band Backstreet Boys concert in Madrid, Spain - 13 May 2019

Call it a near-flashback. Sitting at Anaheim’s Honda Center, I felt like a teenager in New Zealand watching Backstreet Boys ’ “Into the Millennium” tour on a VHS mailed to me by an American pen pal. Mesmerized as the boy band rose up on a platform above a sea of awestruck fans dressed in “Millennium” and “Friends” shirts, it was wildly reminiscent of that time 20  years ago, when the quintet flew onto the stage on hover boards. The opening chords of the record’s swoony ballad, “Don’t Wanna Lose You Now,” the anthemic beats of “It’s Gotta Be You” and the outfit change which later saw them reemerge like they had just stepped out of their “I Want It That Way” video, only heightened the time trip.

The 1999 vibes were felt well before the tour kicked off. There was the group’s 10th studio album, “DNA” debuting at the top of the Billboard 200 chart in February, marking their first number one in almost 20 years. There was lead single, “Don’t Go Breaking My Heart,” landing a Best Pop Duo/Group Grammy nomination alongside fellow 1999 favorites Justin Timberlake and Christina Aguilera. And there’s the Grammy Museum’s “Backstreet Boys: The Experience,” exhibit.

A Backstreet Boys concert is never short of nostalgia, but the group’s current trek is the most “Millennium”-like show yet, with a set list featuring almost two thirds of the 1999 album. And for fans attending the group’s two Southern California stops (Saturday at Los Angeles’ Staples Center and Monday at Anaheim’s Honda Center) that was just fine. “If you want to continue the party like it’s 1999 again, can I get a ‘Hell yeah?’” Kevin Richardson, 47, enthused, the Pre-2K energy shared by groupmates Howie Dorough, AJ McLean, Nick Carter and Brian Littrell. Read on for the five best moments from Anaheim’s Monday night show.

Popular on Variety

The opening Fans unaware of the opening act may have been surprised to see a carbon copy of a teenage Littrell performing a solo set. Indeed, it was his 16-year-old son, Baylee Littrell. While it’s not the first time the aspiring country crooner has opened for the boy band, this time he’s all grown up with his own music, fanbase and stage presence, which had fans dancing along and making up their own actions as he performed singles like “Don’t Knock It” and “Boxes.”

The set list Throwing a curveball with the opener, the group swapped party-starting hits like “Larger Than Life” for a remixed intro of “Everyone” from 2000’s “Black & Blue,” which sampled Coolio’s “Gangster’s Paradise” before “I Wanna Be With You,” from their self-titled 1996 debut.

The first four songs all featured the signature melodies of music making legend Max Martin, whose impact on the band was strongly felt, with around half of the set list comprised of songs Martin wrote and produced.

Having established this would be their most “Millennium”-heavy tour since the record’s 1999/2000 concert run, the group returned to 2019’s “DNA” with Dorough singing part of “Chateau,” while Carter, 39, belted out some of the poignant ballad, “The Way It Was.” The quintet also performed the album’s raunchiest track, “New Love,” while dirty dancing against a backdrop of seedy, red-light district scenes centered around “Hotel BSB” — unnecessary visuals, but perhaps the group’s way of reiterating they’ve grown from boys to men.

Eight of the band’s 10 albums made the set list, with 2008’s “Unbreakable” and 2013’s “In a World Like” conspicuously absent.

The stage While it wasn’t quite in-the-round like the original “Millennium” outing, the “DNA World Tour” stage features a protruding pentagon, which gives a similar feel once the singers hit the peak. Created with ER Productions, the set-up features lasers, pyrotechnics and the golden ticket which is the “DNA Circle,” a hole in the middle of the pentagon. The prime spot offers the unique sensation of dancing in the middle of the stage amid the dizzying but welcome dilemma of which way to look when you have 360-degree Backstreet Boys views.. “Remember 20 years ago when you would throw your bras at us? Kevin and I want to return the favor,” McLean, 41, teased, before tossing a Fruit of the Loom memento into the crowd.

The emotion Something about the late ‘90s pop scene sparked intense feels, whether it was the fierce rivalry between Backstreet Boys and *NSYNC fans, the deep investment in Britney Spears ’ romance with Justin Timberlake or the tears that flowed as teenage girls finally got to see idols like BSB in the flesh. Most fans have since grown up and adapted to lives that didn’t culminate in marrying Nick Carter, but the boys still evoke the same deep emotion. After 70-odd Backstreet Boys shows, I shed my first concert tear hearing the opening chords of “Don’t Wanna Lose You Now,” having previously given up hope of ever seeing such an old favorite live. My only gripe was that the moment was overshadowed by the band rising so high into the air that they were concealed from the whole front section underneath.

The a capella Back in their formative years, the guys regularly performed a capella covers of songs like Boyz II Men’s “End of the Road.” “That’s how we got our record deal, but we didn’t have our own songs,” said 44-year-old Dorough in introducing “Breathe.” “So we had to sing songs by other artists. I’m proud to tell you that today we have our very own a capella song.” While I can’t be alone in thinking it a bit odd that the tune shares the same title as one of their best songs on “In a World Like This,” there was no denying the magic of their combined harmonies as the fivesome huddled around like the good old days with nothing but their voices.
