I've taken dozens of NewEurope walking tours over the past 10 years but Andrew (Andy) by far was the best tour guide I have ever had. He really took liberties to add his own personality and life into the tour - his passions, interests and experiences really allowed us to view the architecture, history and culture of Barcelona through a different lens. He was engaging, interactive, knowledgable and genuinely hilarious. We took the walking tour with our 6 month old baby and feel very lucky/grateful that Andy was our guide!

Augustina was fabulous! Thoughtful and thorough, you can tell how much she loves Barcelona.

Leon's walking tour was a highlight of our trip! He's beyond energetic, his knowledge and love for "Barca" is fantastic and his rapid fire delivery makes for an educational and fun filled morning!

We took two tours with Sandemans. Tour 1: Free waking tour. Meeting location was in front of Hotel Suizo at 10am, just above Jaime Train station. Plan to be there about 10 minutes early so they can start a head count and check you in. They take about a dozen group per tour guide with several tour guides readily available two split the groups. Leon Parris was our tour guide. If you are a history buff, listen carefully as Leon covers a huge range and this guy is amazing. Leon also took us throughout Gothic Quarters area and gave us detailed historical and amusing story telling. By the way, Leon shared he is also available for private tours in smaller groups. The walking tour took about two hours. There is a 15 minutes break before heading to the museum, and during that time you can also buy extra tours from Sandenman which I recommend because there is not set date whereas if you booked online, you have to show up for the date you reserved. Tour 2: I bought the Bike Tour for only 18€ which includes the bike. Tour starts at 10:30am, meets the same place in front of Hotel Suizo and you will walk for about 15 minutes to pick up your bike. Macarena was our tour guide. She was amazing. She even helped take photos of everybody on the tour and took her time to explain the different locations. The bike tour took about 2.5 hours, and goes through the Arc, through the Park, the Pier and ends towards the Beach. The best part about this tour was you get to see Barcelona through the eyes of a local tour guide. We had a lot of fun and we would go through Sandenman tours again during our next visit to Europe as they have many other tour locations including Amsterdam and Germany. Cheers!

A great three hour tour with Patrick from Sandeman's. I've done a couple of Sandeman's tours before (Edinburgh, Amsterdam, Prague), so I knew what to expect The tour is completely free. There's no tricks and no hidden fees. If you like it, and you make it to the end of the tour, you're expected to tip the tour guide with what you think is appropriate. If at any time, you're not happy, they go straight and you make a turn. Easy and you're done. I stuck with the tour to the end. Patrick's knowledge from his six years in Barcelona is extensive. He was funny, he was expressive, he was very passionate about the city, he had great experiences to relate and he kept the flow of information moving and lively. He also had some great recommendations for restaurants and things to see. Five stars for Patrick! I did not do the Sandeman's Tapas tour.

new europe walking tour barcelona

If I am reviewing just for the free tour.. 5 STARS all the way! Leon Paris was absolutely awesome, hands down I have not seen a better Sandeman tour. Period. But. I been to the tapas tour as well. And that tour I will only give at most 2 STARS, if not 1 star. 5 Star Leon: - great bloke - knowledgable - funny - helpful - passionate - care about the tour - great progress - fast walker and doesn't waste time - not lady pleaser and focus on the tour 1/2 Star Tapas tour: - does not deliver the €16 value - food was a bit disappointing - Michelin star restaurant was absolutely rubbish in terms of what food was served and the portion provided - Paella was smaller than my palm - guide was not as friendly or trying, in fact when we requested to change something. A look was given to us with no affirmation or acknowledgement. And just walked off Don't do it. Just don't.

Leon Parris is the Best tour guide we've Ever had! His energy and enthusiasm is invigorating. He gives you the history that you won't find in tour books or on a Hop on Hop off Bus. Learn how art, architecture, politics, and human nature have shaped this incredible city. As only Leon can do!

Did the Barcelona Tapas tour with Ana and the bike tour with Onno. Both were great. The Tapas tour went to some very nice places. A lot of people on the tour, and was a great time. The bike tour with Onno was one of the best bike tours I've been on. Highly recommend both. .

new europe walking tour barcelona

Had a superb time with Anna on the evening tapas tour! Some of this will have a double purpose as feedback/review and as tips for you. + Good selection of venues, and excellent intro to the specialties of each. - I just wish she had told us the names of the tapas places. The first one in particular had outstanding presentations, and I wish I had noted the name. (I will be emailing to find out!) + That first bar was also well-prepared with wine poured and ready for the taking, as well as table water! Hurray! + Juice and soda was available for non-drinkers, but I wish that either more table water or other water options were more readily available at the other venues. + The gluten-free participants got vegetables, mostly the salted green peppers, which were the same in two places. - They got the same tapa in two places... + But man are those tasty. - Why do I have such trouble getting veggies in Barcelona? Tapas bars, anyway. - More foodie depth and a bit more history would be terrific - more about the ingredients of the dishes, different qualities available, what actual Catalanos and Spaniards eat in tapas bars and when they go, etc. + The value for this tour is incredible! Most other tours I found were 4-5 times as much, and some didn't include beverages. This tour included a wine/beer at every stop, as well as a sangria lesson (what was that sporty thing called again?) and at least one group member was a tad soused. Shots of apple schnapps rounded out the night. Definitely check it out! Wish I had caught their walking tour and bike tour!

My family had such a great time with our tour guide Billy (her real name is Sybille) who was originally from Ireland and married to a Spanish guy and lived there for more than a decade. She was quite a entertainer and had lots of knowledges about cultures and histories about Barcelona. It was 3 hour walking tour (with 20 Spanish minutes break in between) but we felt it really short and enjoyed it. Even my 7 year old loved it, too! After the tour, she even sent us an email about great places to eat and have fun in Barcelona. I highly recommend it!

The Top Free Walking Tours in Barcelona

Barcelona’s picturesque plazas are perfect for exploring on foot

Many of Barcelona’s winding old backstreets and picturesque plazas are inaccessible to vehicle traffic, making them perfect for exploring on foot.

What better way to get some exercise and learn about Barcelona’s history, art and culture than on a free walking tour? After all, less money spent on a tour means more money for tapas later. Here’s Culture Trip’s round-up of the best free walking tours in Barcelona.

Free Walking Tours BCN

Barcelona has been through some momentous architectural changes over the years, and nowhere is this more evident than in the historic Gothic Quarter , right at the heart of the city. Free Walking Tours BCN offers a fun and informative walking tour of the district, taking in some important historical sights. From the old Jewish quarter to the majestic Gothic cathedral , you’ll learn everything you ever wanted to know about the history of Barcelona and Catalonia and what makes them distinct from other parts of Spain. The tour leaves from Plaça Catalunya every day at 10am, 11am and 3pm, and lasts around 2.5 hours.

Sandeman’s New Europe

Starting just off Via Laietana in the very centre of town, Sandeman’s New Europe free tour of Barcelona takes you on a whistle-stop tour of the city’s history. From Barcelona’s legendary founding (was Hercules really responsible?) and the Spanish Civil War to the birth of the modern independence movement and the 1992 Olympic Games, this guide will give you the historical context to the modern city we know and love today. The 2.5-hour tour runs five times a day and starts by the exit of Jaume I Metro station. The route is wheelchair-accessible.

This tour starts at Via Laietana in the centre of Barcelona

Runner Bean Tours

Runner Bean Tours offers two free tours, so there’s something for everyone here. One tour has you covered for the history of the Gothic Quarter , while the second, the Runner Bean free Gaudí tour , gives you the lowdown on one of Barcelona’s most famous architects. You’ll find out what defined the movement known as Catalan Modernism and how Antoni Gaudí became one of its most important members. The guide will also take you past some of his most important buildings, including the world-famous Sagrada Família . The tour departs every day from the water fountain at Plaça Reial at 11am and 4.30pm during the summer and at 11am during the winter. The 2.5-hour journey includes a couple of trips on the Metro to reduce walking, so be sure to bring some change.

The Gaudí tour takes in the Sagrada Família

Feel Free Tours

There are two routes to choose from with Feel Free Tours: the Old Town Tour of Barcelona and the Gaudí Modernism Walking Route . As well as showcasing the masterpieces of Antoni Gaudí, the Modernism route will take you past some other, often overlooked but exceptional work by fellow Modernist designers. It will also delve into the urban planning ideals of the 1856 Cerdà expansion plan that advocated (at the time) revolutionary ideas around hygiene and mobility, and eventually led to the building of the Eixample district – a must for anyone interested in the history of urban planning. Tours run every day of the week pretty much all year round, and last around 2.5 hours. Groups of no more than 15 people depart from in front of the Hard Rock Café in Plaça Catalunya.

The Gaudí Modernism Walking Route takes in buildings such as Casa Batlló

Travel Bar tours start and end at their own bar, just off Las Ramblas, near Liceu station. Grab a beer, cocktail or sangria and get to know your fellow group members before or after the tour. The two-hour free walking tour is another great general walk of Barcelona’s most impressive sights, with everything from historic architecture to street art to keep you engaged along the way. Tours are held daily and start at 11am, 1pm and 3pm, but despite their frequency, booking is essential.

Aerial view over Las Ramblas

Barcelona Street Style Tour

Barcelona is home to a thriving street-art scene , so the free walking tours from Barcelona Street Style are a must for fans of urban art. With two options on offer, covering either the El Born neighbourhood and the Gothic Quarter or the colourful district of El Raval , these tours showcase the best of the city’s contemporary city murals. Led by guides who are very knowledgeable about techniques and styles, as well as artists currently active on the local scene, these tours are a fabulous way to learn more about an art form that most of us see every day but may know little about. The El Born and Gothic quarter tour departs at 2pm each day, while the El Raval tour heads out at 10am and 4.45pm. Advance booking is a must.

Take a tour of the winding streets of El Raval

Be Local Tours

The Spanish Civil War (1936–1939) was one of the most dramatic conflicts in the history of Barcelona, and one that still has resonance today. The Be Locals Tours Civil War Free Walking Tour takes you back in time to relive the dark days of the conflict and show you places and monuments still visibly scarred by the fighting. The guides illustrate the historical significance through old photographs and stories of how normal people lived during the war, which makes this an essential tour for anyone interested in this important period. The walk departs every Friday at 11am from Plaça Catalunya; booking online is highly recommended.

The Ruta del Modernisme

Fancy yourself as a tour guide? Well, the Ruta del Moderisme might just be for you. This self-guided tour winds through the city, and takes in more than 100 examples of Barcelona’s acclaimed take on Art Nouveau. The tour will introduce you to the works of Gaudí, Domènech i Montaner and Puig i Cadafalch, the architects who made Barcelona the world capital of Modernism. Points of interest on the route are marked by round red paving stones on the pavement. To keep this tour completely free, you can follow the route and read the descriptions of the buildings on the dedicated website . Alternatively, if you don’t mind spending a bit of money, the accompanying guidebook is €12 and gets you discounted entry to many of the sights along the way. You can buy the guidebook from the Güell Pavilions or the L’Institut Municipal del Paisatge Urbà.

Barcelona Itinerary: How to Spend Your Time in This Incredible City

A wide, open street in sunny Barcelona, Spain filled with strolling pedestrians

Barcelona is one of the most popular destinations in Europe . It’s a lively city bursting at the seams with world-class food, wild clubs and bars, and tourists galore.

While its roots stretch back to the Roman Empire, it was during the Middle Ages that Barcelona really grew into the economic and political center of the Western Mediterranean.

As part of Catalonia (locals consider themselves Catalonian rather than Spanish), you’ll see signs written in Catalan and in Castilian Spanish, and most locals in the city speak both languages. The combination of Spanish and Catalan cultures and traditions here is part of what makes Barcelona the unique city that it is.

In recent years, the city has had to clamp down on “ overtourism ” as over 30 million people visit each year, putting significant strain on the locals and the environment. If you can, try to avoid the hectic summer months and book accommodation outside the city center.

But with so much to see and do in and around Barcelona, where do you begin? How many days do you need to visit?

This Barcelona itinerary highlights all the best things to see and do and can help you organize your visit so you can see it all!

Table of Contents

Day 1 : Barri Gotic, Barcelona History Museum, La Boqueria, & more

Day 2 : Park Güell, La Sagrada Familia, La Rambla, & more

Day 3 : Montjuïc Hill, Cooking Class, Harbor Cable Car, & more

Day 4 : Day Trip to Girona

Other Things to See and Do : Montserrat, Football, Bike Tour, & more

My recommended free walking tour companies in Barcelona are:

For paid tour options, check out this post as it lists all my favorites. You can also check out Get Your Guide as they have tons of tours for every interest and budget.

Barcelona's gothic quarter

The area also has numerous attractions worth seeing:

Barcelona History Museum – Barcelona has one of the best city history museums I’ve ever visited. It includes 4,000 square meters (43,000 square feet) of Roman ruins beneath the museum that you can walk through. There is a free, detailed audio guide and meticulous explanations of the exhibits. If you do one thing in the city, make it this. I visit every time I’m in Barcelona. The ruins are just stunning. Admission is 7 EUR per person but free on Sundays after 3pm.

The Grand Royal Palace – The Palau Reial Major (near the history museum) is almost 700 years old and was the home of Barcelona’s counts and later the kings of Aragon. The palace offers visitors a very detailed history of the city and region through the centuries. Admission is 7 EUR (shared with the history museum above). It’s free on the first Sunday of the month and every Sunday after 3pm.

Chapel of Santa Àgata – This royal chapel was built in 1302 and is part of the Museum of the History of Barcelona. The most interesting thing inside is the beautiful altarpiece, made by Jaume Huguet, that was added in the 15th century. It contains beautiful paintings of religious symbols in the style of the Middle Ages. Admission is 7 EUR.

Barcelona Cathedral – Built between the late 13th to early 15th centuries, this is a classic Gothic cathedral with huge spires standing over 53 meters (174 feet) tall, colorful stained glass, and incredible wood carvings. Make sure you visit the upper terraces where you’ll get an incredible view of Barcelona. Admission is 14 EUR for tourists (free for worshippers).

Barcelona Museum of Contemporary Art (MACBA) This museum has over 5,000 works, including an extensive collection of pieces by Spanish artists such as Joan Miró and Pablo Picasso. There are also works by Americans Andy Warhol and Alexander Calder (the latter being known for his innovative mobiles). While it’s not really my favorite style of art, if you love modern art, be sure to add this to your itinerary.

Plaça dels Àngels 1, +34 934 120 810, macba.cat/en. Open Wednesday to Saturday 10am-8pm and Sundays 10am-3pm (closed on Tuesdays). Admission is 10.80 EUR if purchased online and 12 EUR at the door. Entry is free on Saturdays from 4pm-8pm.

Barcelona's Boquería

Rambla, 91, +34 934 132 303, boqueria.barcelona/home. Open Monday to Saturday 8am-8:30pm.

Flamenco dancers

  • Los Tarantos – This is Barcelona’s oldest flamenco venue. It’s a short show (just 30 minutes) so it’s a good place for an introduction to the art and won’t take up your entire night. Plaça Reial, 17, +34 933 041 210, tarantosbarcelona.com/en. Shows run at 6:30pm, 7:30pm, 8:30pm, and 9:30pm. Tickets start at 25 EUR.
  • Tablao Flamenco Cordobes – This show is in a convenient location on Barcelona’s main walkway, but it’s pricey. La Rambla, 35, +34 933 175 711, ablaocordobes.es. Shows run twice each evening (check the website for times). Admission is 47 EUR (drink and show) or 83 EUR (dinner and show).

Barcelona Itinerary: Day 2

Gadui's fountain of Neptune in Barcelona, Spain

  • Park Güell – Park Güell is a 45-acre garden complex designed and built between 1900 and 1914. It’s since been converted into a municipal garden and is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Tickets are 13 EUR .
  • La Sagrada Família – This is arguably the most famous of Gaudí’s works (and one that seems to never be finished). The church has been under construction for over 100 years (the groundbreaking was in 1882 and is supposed to be done in 2030). Gaudí was a devout Catholic and spent the last 10 years of his life working on this project which is a combination of Gothic and Art Nouveau styles. Admission with an audio guide is 33.80 EUR — but it’s worth it!
  • Casa Batlló – Casa Batlló is a building restored by Antoni Gaudí in the early 1900s. He spent two years on the project completely revamping the exterior, main floor, patio, and roof. Located in the Eixample district, it (like everything Gaudí designed) was heavily influenced by the Art Nouveau style. It’s one of my favorite Gaudí buildings. Admission is 25 EUR and includes an audio guide.
  • Casa Milà – From 1906 to 1910, Gaudí worked on Casa Mila which is just a couple hundred meters away from Casa Batlló. It’s also known as “La Pedrera” (the Stone Quarry) as the building has a facade of limestone. The goal with this design was to evoke the sense of a snowy mountain. Gaudí, himself a Catholic and a devotee of the Virgin Mary, also planned for the Casa Milà to be a spiritual symbol. Skip-the-line tickets are 28 EUR.
  • Palau Güell – Located off La Rambla, Palau Güell (Güell Palace) building doesn’t jump out at you like other Gaudí structures. Built from 1886-1888, it was designed for one of Gaudí’s patrons, Eusebi Güell. The home is centered around the main room used to entertain high-society guests.

For more information on Gaudí’s works as well as entrance fees, locations, and operating hours, check out my guide to Gaudí’s Barcelona .

the beach in Barcelona

Take a stroll on La Rambla This popular boulevard, with a broad but crowded walkway in the center, has many beautiful buildings along it, including the Gran Teatre del Liceu, the city’s opera house. Near the theater, you can also see a mosaic by famous artist Joan Miró. There are street performers galore here (they even have their own union), making it perfect for people-watching. While this street is ground zero for tourists in the city and gets swamped by crowds it’s worth a stroll down at least once (don’t eat at the restaurants here, they’re overpriced). Just keep an eye out for pickpockets.

Barcelona Itinerary: Day 3

Visit the Picasso Museum While I’m not a huge fan of most of Picasso’s later work, it’s still interesting to learn about the life and work of one of the most influential artists of the twentieth century. Opened in 1963 and home to over 4,000 pieces of art, it’s the most comprehensive collection of Pablo Picasso’s works in the world. In addition to his paintings, the museum also has drawings, ceramics, and engravings by Picasso.

Carrer Montcada 15-23, +34 932 563 000, museupicasso.bcn.cat/en. Open Tuesday-Sunday 10am-7pm. Admission is 12 EUR, with free entry on the first Sunday of the month.

Ride the harbor cable car The 1,450-meter-long (4,757-foot) harbor aerial tramway with red cars connects Barceloneta and Montjuïc Hill. The 10-minute trip offers incredible views of Barcelona. You’ll see the port and sea on one side and the city on the other. Also, at the top of the 78-meter (255-foot) Sant Sebastià tower in Barceloneta, there’s a restaurant accessible by an elevator. You can also hike one of the trails to the summit of Montjuïc Hill, which takes as little as 30 minutes.

Miramar station (Paseo Juan de Borbón) and San Sebastián Tower (Avda. de Miramar), +34 934 304 716, telefericodebarcelona.com/en. Open daily 11am-5:30pm (10:30am-8pm in the summer). Round-trip tickets cost 16 EUR .

Barcelona's Montjuïc Hill

Here are some highlights of Montjuïc:

Castell de Montjuïc – This old fortress features military displays and information on the history of the castle. Admission is 12 EUR (13 EUR including a guided tour). It’s free on Sundays after 3pm as well as on the first Sunday of the month.

Joan Miró Foundation – Joan Miró was one of Catalonia’s most famous artists. Many of the artist’s surrealist works (over 14,000 of them) are on display in this museum. Most were donated by Miró himself. There is also a contemporary art collection that was put together as a tribute to the artist in the years after his death. Admission is 9 EUR.

Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya – This art museum houses Catalonian art, particularly Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque works. The fountain out front has a spectacular free show that takes place on Thursday, Fridays, and Saturdays from 9pm-10pm (April 1-May 31 and September 1-October 31) and 8pm-9pm (November 1-March 31), and Wednesday-Sundays from 9:30pm-10:30pm (from June 1-August 30). Currently, the fountain is closed during the drought so be sure to check their website for information. Admission is 12 EUR (free on Saturdays from 3pm and on the first Sunday of the month).

Poble Espanyol (Spanish Village) – The Spanish Village was built in 1929 to resemble an actual traditional village with 117 buildings from different Spanish regions. There’s an Andalusian quarter, a section of the Camino, a monastery, and more. It’s a good family activity. Admission is 13.50 EUR in advance online (15 EUR same day online or from the ticket office).

The Olympic Ring – When Barcelona hosted the 1992 Olympic Games, all of the excitement centered around the Olympic Ring: the Olympic Stadium, Palau Sant Jordi, and the Olympic Esplanade. You can roam the entire space for free.

Other Things to See and Do in Barcelona

the monastic buildings at Montserrat

Head to Montserrat – The Montserrat mountain range is just an hour outside of the city by train and makes for a great getaway from Barcelona’s urban atmosphere. Once there, pay a visit to the famous shrine of the Black Madonna at the Santa Maria de Montserrat monastery. This Benedictine monastery is built into the mountain and it is claimed that the Black Madonna here was carved in Jerusalem during the early years of Christianity, (it most likely actually dates to the 12th century). The Benedictine monastery and the valley of unique, rocky pillars make for some really awesome photography.

Monserrat also has an Art Museum with works by Monet, Dali, Picasso, and many other famous artists. And don’t miss the local market — it’s the perfect place to buy local products like fresh produce, cheese, honey, and artisan crafts and it’s easy to find (it’s on the way to the monastery).

Guided day tours to Montserrat start around 70 EUR per person.

Visit an old-school amusement park – Tibidabo Barcelona, built in 1899, is one of the oldest amusement parks in the world. On a tall mountain in the Serra de Collserola, it also offers an incredible view of Barcelona and the coastline in addition to the rides, games, and restaurants there. It’s open on the weekends, except in the winter. Tibidabo Square, +34 932 117 942, tibidabo.cat. Hours vary depending on the season. Check the website for details. Admission is 35 EUR.

Catch an outdoor film – If you’re in Barcelona in July or August, consider going up to Montjuïc Castle to catch an outdoor film on the lawn of the castle’s moat. Screenings take place everyday at 10:30pm and are preceded by live music. Tickets are 7.50 EUR.

If you can’t make those screenings, try Sant Sebastià beach in Barceloneta (showing movies on Thursdays and Sundays) or Cosmonits at CosmoCaixa outside the Science Museum (Thursdays in July/first week of August). The Cine al Aire Libre–l’Illa Diagonal also has movies at the Gardens of San Juan De Dios on Thursday evenings in July as well.

Watch a soccer match – The first “football” game I ever saw was in Barcelona. It was Espanyol versus Valencia. I still have the shirt I bought that day. Barcelona’s two teams are Espanyol and FC Barcelona and, if a match is going on, try to take in one. Locals are obsessed with the sport and you’ll make a lot of good friends at the game! If you can’t make a game, you can tour the stadium and the FCB (or Barça) Museum for 28 EUR.

Visit the aquarium – Perfect for a rainy day, the Barcelona Aquarium has more than 11,000 animals, showcasing species from a variety of underwater ecosystems. The walk-through tunnel is the best part. Moll d’Espanya del Port Vell, +34 932 217 474, aquariumbcn.com/en. Open daily 10am-8pm, depending on the season. Admission is 25 EUR.

Gaze at Barcelona’s free public art – Gaudí outdid himself with the huge fountain located in the Parc de la Ciutadella, a tribute to the god Neptune. I absolutely love the art and fountain here. Gaudí designed the famous fountain when he was an architecture student. There’s also a zoo in the park and some short walking paths. Take a bottle of wine, grab some ham, and have a picnic.

Other offbeat Gaudí works include the lampposts in Plaça Reial and Pla de Palau and the Miralles gate and wall on Passeig de Manuel Girona.

Barcelona native Joan Miró’s work is found throughout the town as well; you can see his famous “Woman and Bird” sculpture at Parc de Joan Miró. There are also Miró mosaics on La Rambla and at the airport.

Where to Eat in Barcelona

For some excellent food, be sure to check out some of my favorite places to eat in Barcelona:

  • Les Quinze Nits – Delicious food at a great price. It’s a bit touristy, but even the locals come here for the value. Avoid the long lines at dinner by going for lunch instead.
  • Quimet & Quimet – Tasty tapas and sandwiches in a cozy setting. There are over 500 types of wine on the menu too!
  • 1881 per Sagardi – Upscale seafood restaurant in La Barceloneta with a view.
  • Paradiso – Chic cocktail bar with delicious small plates. They offer mixology classes too.
  • Pinotxo Bar – Just inside the Boquería food market, this little stall is always packed and serves some of the most famous tapas in the area.
  • Tapeo – Original dishes and an expansive wine menu in an intimate Gothic Quarter space.
  • La Fonda – Good food with large portions. Its set menu will give you more than you can eat, and it features beautiful décor and a robust wine selection.
  • Botafumeiro – One of the best seafood joints in the city. Expect high prices!
  • Dry Martini – Fancy cocktail bar with a classy wooden interior and strong Mad Men vibes (though there’s no dress code so don’t need to dress up).
  • Els 4Gats (The Four Cats) – This was one of Picasso’s favorite haunts and a popular hangout for artists in the early 1900s. Grab a drink and maybe some tapas (the patatas bravas are delicious!) and soak up the place’s history.

Barcelona has something for everyone. You could squeeze in the real highlights of Barcelona in two or three days, but taking four, five, or even six days for the above itinerary will give you enough time to gorge on Iberian ham, tapas, and sangria while not rushing around.

Free Barcelona Walking Tours

new europe walking tour barcelona

There are several types of free walking tours in Barcelona, Spain with most companies employing local guides and offering both a Gothic Quarter as well as a Gaudi/Modernism tour.

But there are also free tours that focus on street art as well as a free bike tour available.

In this post, we will explain your options, and provide schedules, and a calendar.

In Barcelona, the capital of Catalonia, there are many self-guided tours as well as talks at museums and historic sights that truly cost nothing.

It's easy to walk around Barcelona, especially the Gothic Quarter and other older neighborhoods.

However, most people understand the term 'free tours' to be guided walks that operate on a ‘name-your-own-price’ model or what’s usually called a ‘tips-only-basis’.

Free Tour Barcelona

There is no cost to take a tour. So, technically, these tours are free.

After the tour, you are encouraged to decide how much you thought it was worth or what you could afford, even nothing.

According to reviews on Google and TripAdvisor, past participants seem to leave between €5-€15 per adult.

The tours listed below are run through us. More tours are available in the following sections.

Visitors at Antoni Gaudí’s Park Güell, Barcelona, Spain

Top 10 Barcelona walking tours

Gaze at graffiti, try the city’s best food or take a tour led by architects, photographers or even the homeless … Barcelona has a guided walk for everyone

The DIY tour

A guided walk is the quick and easy way to learn lots about a place but at €10-€20pp the cost can soon rack up, particularly for a family. Guiding yourself keeps the price down and lets you choose your own pace. The Ruta del Modernisme winds through the city linking more than 100 examples of Catalonia’s famed take on art nouveau. You could be cheap and read descriptions of buildings from the ruta’s rather clunky website, but the accompanying guidebook is only €12 and gets you a discounted entry to many sights. All the biggies, such as Gaudí’s Sagrada Família and the Palau de la Música Catalana by Lluís Domènech i Montaner are on the ruta but you can search out the work of lesser-known architects, such as my favourite, Josep Maria Jujol . rutadelmodernisme.com , guidebook available from Museu del Modernisme de Barcelona

The free tour

Placa Reial, Barcelona, at dusk

As in many other cities, a new type of tour has taken off in Barcelona in the last few years. Tours are “free” – you just give your guide what you think is a fair tip at the end. Simple. But are they any good? I tried half a dozen tours of the Gothic Quarter and soon felt like Phil Connors in Groundhog Day. Most of the tours were average and one was spectacularly bad – it took us nearly an hour to actually get to the Gothic Quarter and, no, I don’t want to buy a ticket for your tapas tour and, no, George Orwell wasn’t shot in Barcelona. But I’d heartily recommend a couple. I expected to take against Sandemans New Europe because it’s a bit of a corporate behemoth but my guide, Leon, was brilliant. I also loved the passion of Laura from Travel Bound. Tips average around €10-€15pp, 2-3 hours, Sandemans ( newbarcelona-tours.com ), Travel Bound ( travelbar.com )

Street art in the Raval district

Street art in the Raval district, Barcelona.

You can’t fail to notice the city’s obsession with the spray can; every metal shop shutter in the Raval, just off the Ramblas, seems to be covered in designs. But I hadn’t seen anything until I walked the barrio with Dominic, who spent his teenage years leaving his mark on commuter trains in Sydney. He taught me about tagging, throw-ups and stencilling, and showed me the work of famous street artists such as El Gordo (fat guys with square faces on tiles) and BCN Cans (cans sprayed with a letter then stuck together to spell out messages such as “Tonight the streets are ours”). A squad of city workers armed with paint brushes polices the streets to wipe out graffiti but they’re fighting a losing battle. Free but tip appreciated, 2 hours, barcelonastreetstyletour.com

Barcelona’s food hotspot

A market stopoff on Barcelona Eat Local’s morning walking tour.

The food scene in the district of Poble Sec at the foot of Montjuic hill is hotter than a guindilla pepper. I have some favourite places, such as Mano Rota , but put myself into the hands of the experts to discover more. Barcelona Eat Local’s tour, unusually, started in the morning but that did mean we got to sample great bacallà (salt cod) in the market and visit a wine shop owned by a cava producer for a glass at noon before patatas bravas (probably the best I’ve ever had) and jamón in a very trad restaurant, and then Ferran Adrià’s favourite lunch stop – the king of molecular gastronomy apparently loves old-school offal. The Barcelona Taste tour is in the evening and we ate spectacularly well, from anchovies in a modern tapas bar to octopus in an Argentinian-run joint and Szechuan fish in a place that epitomises Poble Sec right now. These tours are undoubtedly expensive but they include all food and drink and are a world away in quality from the €15 old town tapas tours. barcelonaeatlocal.com €70pp; thebarcelonataste.com €80pp; both around 3 hours

The family tour

Runner Bean’s Kids and Family tour, Barcelona

Dragons, giants, pooing peasants – and sweets. What’s not for a child to like on Runner Bean’s Kids and Family tour? I borrowed four, aged four-12, and we set off with guide Ann-Marie. She enthralled the kids with the grisly story behind the Catalan flag illustrated with her own drawings. There were games, puzzles and jokes as we wandered the Gothic Quarter learning a bit of history. The children loved the tale of how Saint George (Catalonia’s patron saint) slayed the dragon and saved the princess and visiting the workshop where giant figures are made for the city’s many festivals. They were a bit uncertain about singing Ann-Marie’s version of the Catalan song about the Christmas log that poos turrón (nougat) and looked appalled when she pulled out a figurine of a caganer . Who can blame them? The tour finished at a shop making artisan candy. Sweet. €15pp (free for children aged up to three), 2½ hours, runnerbeantours.com

An architect’s view of the new Barcelona

Encants market, Barcelona

A group of young architects are behind Barcelona Architecture Walks and I signed up for their Barcelona and the Future City stroll. Plaça de les Glòries Catalanes was to be the new centre of Barcelona in its 19th-century expansion but it ended up little more than a vast, unlovely traffic junction. The square is now a building site as the city authorities try to rescue this space. Guide Jordi explained some of the theories of urban planning – keeping within a beginner’s comprehension/boredom level – before we walked by some of the new buildings here, such as Encants market and the Design Museum, the Museu del Disseny de Barcelona . A fascinating glimpse into an architect’s world and the challenges of imagining a city’s future. €30pp, 2 ½ hours, barcelonarchitecturewalks.com

A photography tour of the Born district

Ceiling of Estació de França, Barcelona.

I always pick up my camera with a heavy heart, imagining that it stops me from just seeing stuff. That’s probably why my photographs are so terrible, and why Fran from Foto Ruta Barcelona had his work cut out. Our small group met in the Born and Fran explained a few basics: light, perspective, the rule of thirds (about composition) and encouraged us to experiment. I didn’t lie on the pavement like one of the group to get a pug’s view of street life but I did snap away at shapes, colours and details. Days later I still found myself looking at familiar streets in a new way. We compared photographs at the end and mine were by far the worst – but, gulp, here’s one (above). From €80pp, 3 hours, foto-ruta.es

The Raval, guided by the homeless

Tourists on a Hidden City Tours trip around Barcelona.

There are reckoned to be at least 3,000 people living on the city’s streets but they can be almost invisible to tourists. Hidden City Tours was set up by a Brit to employ, as guides, people who have been on the streets. Former taxi driver Jaume led me on the new Street Life tour amid the Raval, taking me through an average day in the life of a homeless person, from where to sleep (a park in summer, a bank’s cashpoint lobby in winter) and how to keep clean (library washrooms) to how to make money (blowing giant soap bubbles) and where to eat (for example, one of Barcelona’s poshest hotels delivers a giant free paella each Thursday to soup kitchen El Chiringuito de Dios . Jaume is now off the streets and back working as a driver as well as guiding. From €15pp, 1 ½ hours, hiddencitytours.com

Green Barcelona

Montjuic hill, Barcelona, Spain.

Montjuïc hill has always offered a splash of green in this densely packed city. Biologist Mónica is charming and passionate and took me on a fascinating nature tour of this hulk of rock. It moved from descriptions of flora and fauna – such as how the uniform weight of the seeds of carob trees, found on Montjuïc, are the basis for the carat – to explanations of how nature has affected the look of Barcelona. For example, we stopped at an oleander shrub and Mónica showed how Antoni Gaudí used the unusual structure of a stalk as the model for the columns of the Sagrada Família. She also found time to bring in social history, explaining how the hill was once covered in shanty towns, housing a fifth of the city’s population in the 1960s. Mónica’s partner Nick does a great Spanish civil war tour in Barcelona . €25pp, 3 ½ hours, barcelonawildlife.com

Barcelona Historic Centre

new europe walking tour barcelona

They say Barcelona was founded by either mythological Hercules or Carthaginian general Hamilcar Barca, father of Hannibal, one of the greatest military commanders of all times. So much the legends, the truth is that the city was a political center of the Catalan region for at least 2000 years since the Romans built their city there. Walking around the Barri Gotic, the Gothic Quarter you still see old walls and the grid of streets typical for Roman cities. An excellent harbour and a beautiful setting made Barcelona develop fast. The Old Town bears traces of all the powers that ruled it through the ages: the Romans, the Visigoths, the Moors and the Aragones. The concept of the city changed at the turn of the 19th and 20th century when Barcelona went through rapid urban development, architectural remodeling and became a center of a fascinating architectural style called Catalan modernism known around the world because of the works of the ingenious Antoni Gaudi. Standing against Francisco Franco Barcelona was devastated and severely punished. It was here, living opposite Franco, that George Orwell wrote his memoirs “Homage to Catalonia.” The development of the city was accelerated by the organization of the 1992 Summer Olympics (the Barcelona effect!). Today it is one of the most popular cities in the world combining rich history, culture, amazing works of artists like Pablo Picasso and Joan Miró and all the joys of the Mediterranean coast.

Walk with us through the labyrinth of small, winding streets and tranquil plazas of the Barcelona Old Town to discover its fascinating history, culture, dining and drinking scene. Take a chance to see the residence of Aragonese kings, seat of the Catalan government, ancient churches and palaces as well as one of the oldest synagogues in Europe. The Old Town went through some substantial restoration works in the late 19th and early 20th century and from a humble district changed into a major tourist destination. Hence, next to original Roman and medieval structures you will see some modern and neo-Gothic ones, like the beautiful Bishop’s Bridge or the facade of Barcelona Cathedral. All forming a unique and charming mix waiting there to be admired!

During this 2 hour free walking tour we will see and discover:

  • Gothic Quarter
  • Born Quarter
  • King’s square
  • Plaza Cataluña
  • Jewish Quarter
  • Bishop’s Bridge
  • Sant Jaume Square
  • Fossar de les Moreres memorial square
  • Barcelona’s Cathedral
  • Palau de la Generalitat – the seat of Catalan government
  • Sant Felip Neri square
  • Barcelona’s Roman Wall
  • Barcelona’s Medieval City Hall
  • Santa Maria del Mar (Cathedral of the Sea)
  • and much, much more!
