Airport news: Travel Lens ranks RSW No. 1 airport in U.S.

travel lens airport rankings

Best beaches. Best golf courses. Best restaurants to watch a sunset. Southwest Florida has been recognized in various ways for all of these topics.

How does "Best airport in the U.S." sound?

Passengers coming to paradise By the numbers: Which airlines carried the most passengers at RSW in 2022?

You can add that accolade to the list of superlatives for our corner of the world after Travel Lens announced recently that Fort Myers' Southwest Florida International Airport (RSW) is the No. 1 airport in the country based on its four-category analysis.

Travel Lens is digital publication dedicated to featuring high-quality travel articles about worldwide destinations, best hotels, restaurants, cafes, bars, and airports.

RSW is one of more than 5,000 public airports in the U.S., according to Travel Lens.  Travel Lens pitted the 50 busiest U.S. airports against each other to reveal the best in the country based on a range of factors, including wait times, passenger satisfaction levels, a Google review rating and CO2 emissions.

RSW finished No. 1 with an overall score of 8.06 out of 10. Runner-up honors went to California's John Wayne Airport (7.96) located in Orange County.

Tampa International, No. 4 overall with an overall rating of 7.76, was the only other Florida airport in the Top 10. Tampa International was No. 1 in customer satisfaction (846/1,000).

"We are pleased that Southwest Florida International Airport was recently named the best airport in the U.S. by Travel Lens in the USA Airport Report," said Ben Siegel, CPA, C.M., executive director of the Lee County Port Authority. "I am proud that RSW had the highest score in the nation based on passenger satisfaction levels, airport wait times, Google Review ratings and more. We would not be able to have this success without our employees, the airlines, Transportation Security Administration, concessions and airport business partners who work so hard each and every day to make the travel experience at RSW a positive one for our guests."

RSW set a record for number of passengers in 2022 (10,343,802) and did it despite the airport being closed from Sept. 28 to Oct. 4 because of Hurricane Ian. And from Oct. 5 to Oct. 10, commercial flights only operated during daylight hours (due to airline and federal agency staffing).

Did you know? Record for RSW: Most passengers ever for one year at Fort Myers airport

How RSW scored in the different categories

  • The airport secured a passenger satisfaction rating of 846/1,000, which is the fourth highest in the US.
  • The average wait time at Southwest Florida International is 16 minutes, which is the 28th shortest in the US, along with two other airports.
  • The airport scored a Google Review Rating of 4.5/5, which is the fourth highest in the US, alongside San Jose International and Portland International.
  • Southwest Florida International produces 79g/km of CO2 emissions per passenger, which is the second lowest in the US.

What Travel Lens said about RSW

Taking the top spot, with an airport rating of 8.06 /10 is Southwest Florida International. As suggested by the name, this airport is located in the bottom half of Florida and boasts a Google review rating of 4.5 /5. Although it may not be the biggest airport in terms of area, it is currently the second-busiest single-runway airport in America. Bearing this in mind, it makes it all the more impressive that they have a short average wait time of just 16 minutes as well as low pollution levels.

Bad news for Charlotte Douglas International

The North Carolina airport had the worst overall score in the study with 1.74 rating out of 10.

Which U.S. airport is the best? We're looking at you, RSW

travel lens airport rankings

There's no doubt airports are bustling and frenetic places: flights coming and going, luggage checked and collected, friends and family saying hello and goodbye, businesspeople and tourists scurrying about.

So, given all that quick here-and-there, what airport might have come out on top as the best U.S. airport?

Would you believe RSW?

The staff at Travel Lens, a digital publication dedicated to travel articles about worldwide destinations, best hotels, restaurants, cafes, bars, and more pitted the 50 busiest US airports against each other to find the best in the country based on a range of factors, including wait times, passenger satisfaction levels, and CO2 emissions.

The U.S. is home to more than 5,000 public airports that provide flights for millions of passengers every year and with a duty to deliver good service.

That RSW came out on top should be no surprise. For the most part, anyone who has traversed Southwest Florida International Airport — RSW is its airport industry code — knows it's fairly compact and easy to get around.

Ben Siegel, executive director and CEO of the airport, said the ratings do mean something to the airport.

"Well, I think, you know, the recognition like this means a lot to I think our employees and our business partners and just knowing that all the hard work that they put in to making the travel experience one of a kind is paying off. These Google reviews and stuff, people, you know, that they're not shy about complaining about when things aren't going right," Siegel said. "So, you know, being recognized for all of these categories, in general customer satisfaction, wait times, things of that nature really shows that, we're all you know, these airports are like little cities and they were all everything that we're doing is really is really being recognized by by the community and all the travelers here at the airport. So it's really nice."

Siegel added that the expansion project ongoing at RSW will boost ratings like these in the future.

"There's certainly a possibility as construction gets a little more in depth, you know, over the next year and a half to two years, that the experience here at the airport may change, we're going to do everything we can to avoid that," he said. "But I will say that the project that we're under construction for, the first phase of our terminal expansion, is really going to amp up what we already have. We're recognized as being a very user friendly, easy to navigate through airport. And we're going to continue not only with that model, but we're going to have a whole array of new retail and food and beverage concessions, an easier way to navigate through our security checkpoints, a lot more flexibility for the for the traveling public when they do go through the checkpoints. So it's going to really, really amp up the overall travel experience that you know people will have here."

Here are the parameters and just how our own "little" Southwest Florida airport came out on top:

Southwest Florida International Crowned Best Airport

To kick off this airport report Travel Lens staff combined a range of factors, including passenger satisfaction, wait times, and pollution levels, to determine which US airports are the best. Here's their results.

1. Southwest Florida International (RSW) - Airport Rating of 8.06 /10

Taking the top spot, with an airport rating of 8.06 /10, was Southwest Florida International.

As suggested by the name, this airport is located in the bottom half of Florida and boasts a Google review rating of 4.5 /5. Although it may not be the biggest airport in terms of area, it is currently the second-busiest single-runway airport in the U.S. B

Bearing this in mind, it makes it all the more impressive that they have a short average wait time of just 16 minutes as well as low pollution levels. Spending some time researching the best things to do in Southwest Florida will ensure that the rest of your holiday is as good as the journey.

Bringing up the remaining top 10 airports are:

  • John Wayne, Orange County, California, 7.96/10
  • Portland International, Oregon. 7.86/10
  • Tampa International, Tampa. 7.76/10
  • Dallas Love Field, Texas. 7.35/10
  • Sacramento International, California. 7.30/10
  • Indianapolis International, Indiana. 7.10/10
  • Harry Reid International, Nevada. 6.89/10
  • Baltimore/Washington International, Thurgood Marshall. 6.63/10
  • Washington Dulles International. 6.58/10

Wish we could say RSW took the lead in every category, but at least another Florida airport did win out for most satisfied passengers.

1. Tampa International (TPA) - Passenger Satisfaction score of 846 /1000

Taking the top spot in this list is Tampa International with a satisfaction score of 8.46 /10.00. If you are unsure of where to stay in Tampa then you needn't worry as Tampa’s state of Florida is a popular holiday destination with lots of excellent accommodations to match the high standards set by this airport.

RSW did come in at fourth place in this category and also fourth among the most highly-regarded airports with John Wayne Airport tops in that category.

With many people taking steps to reduce the effects of climate change, many industries are also doing their bit. With this in mind, Travel Lens checked which airports are currently producing the least amount of CO2 emissions.

Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International came in tops with 79g/km of CO2 emissions per passenger. RSW placed second with a slightly higher reading of 82g/km of CO2 emissions per passenger.

Travel Lens touted RSW for practicing sustainability, including the use of LED light fixtures and solar panels throughout its terminals. The survey also highlighted Southwest Florida International initiatives to encourage passengers to adopt more eco-conscious lifestyle choices, including water refill stations in an attempt to reduce the purchase of plastic bottles.

Southwest Florida International Airport is also acknowledged as one of the top 50 U.S. airports for passenger traffic. For more information, visit flylcpa.com or facebook.com/flyRSW .

Southwest Florida International Airport

How they did it / methodology

Here's how Travel Lens computed its findings:

Used FAA data to create a list of the 50 busiest airports in the US based on the number of passengers.

Used J.D Power to find the passenger satisfaction rating for each airport. The passenger satisfaction score was on a 1000-point scale (with 1000 being the highest satisfaction).

We use AWT to gather the average wait times for each airport from the 15th of January 2023.

Searched each airport on Google Maps and took the average star rating (out of 5) for each airport to find those with the best reviews.

Used Airport Tracker to reveal the CO2 emissions produced by each airport per passenger (grams CO2 per passenger km).

Using all of the aforementioned factors (passenger satisfaction, wait time, Google review scores and CO2 emissions), Travel Lens was able to give each airport an overall rating by normalizing each factor out of 10 and taking an average of these scores.

While the airports in the U.S. typically rank lower than many international airports for overall satisfaction and accessibility of public transit, there is still much to be said about the quality of U.S. airports.

In fact, many studies show that the overall satisfaction at U.S. airports is at its highest level ever!

Everyone has their favorite (or least favorite) airport to visit. But when you look at the cold, hard facts, which are considered the best and worst?

Upgraded Points took a comprehensive look at 60 airports across the U.S.,  compiling data from multiple sources to pick definitive winners and losers.

The main categories that we considered in our calculations were:

  • Overall satisfaction scores
  • Timeliness of flights (flight delays and cancellations)
  • Ease of access to the city center (public transportation options, transportation costs, and time)
  • Airport amenities (lounge access and Wi-Fi).

While the weights we assigned to various categories are subjective, we have extensive data to back up our results.

Most travelers don’t have much choice in departure airport. You live where you live.

At least you know now whether to count yourself lucky or if you’ve earned the hour of complaining you’ll dole out to friends when you return from your next trip.

So how do the airports in the U.S. stack up against each other?

Let’s get right to it!

The Best and Worst Airports In The US

Most of these airports come as no surprise and are shown in descending order starting with the best of the bunch.

Portland International Airport has been consistently ranked by numerous publications as the best domestic airport many years in a row.

This airport achieved recognition as the best for the ease of their check-in and security, dining options with local favorites such as Stumptown Coffee and Blue Star Donuts, access via light rail line straight from downtown Portland, on-time performance, and free Wi-Fi, just to name a few!

Other strong contenders include Denver International Airport , which offers strong public transit options and high overall satisfaction from travelers and San Francisco International Airport, which has some of the best lounges in the U.S.

If you want your flight to leave on time consistently, Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport is a good bet!

For how all of our other top 10 stack in each category, make sure to check out the infographic above.

  • Portland International Airport ( PDX )
  • Denver International Airport ( DEN )
  • Tampa International Airport ( TPA )
  • Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport (ANC)
  • San Francisco International Airport ( SFO )
  • Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport ( MSP )
  • Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport ( PHX )
  • Sacramento International Airport ( SMF )
  • Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport ( ATL )
  • Indianapolis International Airport (IND)

Starting at the bottom, John Glenn Columbus International Airport came in low across the board.

This airport generally has unsatisfied travelers based on their limited dining selections, security wait times, poor on-time performance, and zero lounge access. The only saving grace appears to be unlimited Wi-Fi.

If you’re planning on your flight being on time, it’s good to avoid LaGuardia Airport and Newark Liberty International Airport. These two airports both average approximately a 30-minute departure delay.

On a positive note, at least these airports have a decent lounge selection for you to kill time in waiting for your flight to depart.

  • John Glenn Columbus International Airport (CMH)
  • LaGuardia Airport ( LGA )
  • Eppley Airfield (OMA)
  • Newark Liberty International Airport ( EWR )
  • Buffalo Niagara International Airport (BUF)
  • San Antonio International Airport (SAT)
  • Bradley International Airport (BDL)
  • Hollywood Burbank International Airport (BUR)
  • Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport ( MSY )
  • Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport ( FLL )

We started with a list of the top 60 airports by volume in the United States for 2017. From there, we compiled numerous data sources (described in more detail below) to come up with our overall rankings.

In the infographic above, we focused on the top and bottom 10 overall, so if you don’t see a particular airport here, know that it’s comfortably in the middle.

We used sources that had data to back them up, so we know there are things we couldn’t factor in, like the strength of routes, opinions of specific airport lounges, or personal airline preferences. We tried to keep this as unbiased as possible.

Overall Satisfaction: Worth 45%

An overall satisfaction survey was conducted by J.D. Power for January to August of 2017 with responses from 34,695 North American travelers who used 1 or more airports in the U.S. at departure or arrival, including transit within one of the past three months.

Their calculations were carried out by 6 factors:

  • Terminal facility
  • Accessibility of airport
  • Security check
  • Baggage claim
  • Check-in and baggage deposit
  • Restaurants and retail stores

They ranked the airports on a scale of 1 to 5, so we stayed true to this rating for our calculations.

We weighted this survey so heavily because it includes opinions on categories that aren’t public information, like security checkpoint wait times and baggage claim. TSA does not make historical security wait times public, but they at least allow you to check current wait times on their app.

Hot Tip:  Are you still waiting in the security line? Read our in-depth guide on TSA PreCheck !

Also, baggage is included as a part of this survey, but it should be noted that any delayed or lost luggage is typically the responsibility of the airline, not the airport.

We did not attempt to rate the quality of dining and shopping options in any of our data sources, so travelers’ overall satisfaction with those options would be included in this survey as well.

Average Delay and Cancel Times: Worth 25%

There is nothing more frustrating as a traveler than seeing that Now At… notice on the screen. Except maybe seeing that your flight has been canceled. Some airports are notoriously worse than others for delays and cancellations.

Lounges, great dining options, and free Wi-Fi will only help you so much if you can’t even get off the ground. That’s why we weighted this category second.

For this calculation, we used the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Bureau of Transportation Statistic’s data from March 2017 – March 2018 . We independently ranked each of the 3 categories out of 5 to determine our overall ranking: the average scheduled departure to take off delay in minutes, overall percentage of late flights, and overall percentage of canceled flights.

For example, to get a perfect 5 out of 5 score, the average delay must be less than 5 minutes, the overall percentage of late flights must be less than 13.5%, and the overall percentage of canceled flights must be less than .56%. LaGuardia was one of the worst offenders at over 21% of flights delayed and 3.5% canceled, with an average delay of over 30 minutes.

Note: This data includes departure delays only.

Airport Public Transit: Worth 15%

Public transit is where U.S. airports struggle compared to international airports. There are very few airports where it’s quicker and more cost-effective to take public transit than an Uber or taxi. This cost-effectiveness is why we looked at public transit price compared to an Uber fare for this calculation.

We also compared transit times to drive times and took into consideration the number of daily departures from the airports to downtown locations. If you get to the airport and want to take public transit, only to learn that there are 2 daily departures, that doesn’t make it very convenient, does it?

Each airport was ranked from 1 to 5, with a 5 only being awarded to 4 airports. In these instances, it was faster and most cost-effective to take public transit over driving. Those airports are Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport ( ATL ), Denver International Airport ( DEN ), Chicago Midway International Airport ( MDW ), and Chicago O’Hare International Airport ( ORD ).

Some of the least-efficient options are cities that only have buses that connect to the airport. For example, while it only costs a little over a dollar to ride, San Antonio International Airport’s public transit option is 150% slower than driving. Yikes!

To get the data here, we used Google maps for drive times and Uber’s fare estimator . We looked at the airport websites and each city’s public transportation website to determine price and frequency of service. For all of these sources, we used a central location downtown and the same date and time across all cities. We know not everyone goes to a central location, but this was the best way for us to standardize our numbers across the board.

Lounge Access: Worth 10%

Lounge access is an important factor when planning your routes and layovers. While we didn’t attempt to rank all of the lounges based on quality, we took a look at the total number of lounges at each airport. The more options you have, the more likely that you’ll find something that appeals to you.

We looked at Priority Pass  and Centurion Lounge  info as well as the various airline and airport websites to determine the number and type of all lounges and assigned a ranking of 1 to 5 depending on the number. Airports with 7 or more lounges received a perfect score, those with 5 to 6 received a 4, and so on.

If you’re interested in reading more about lounges that will be available at the airport you’re traveling from, check out our airport guides section. This way you can ensure an airport has a lounge that’s accessible to you before departure or during your layover.

We weighted this section at 10% because this is a luxury category. While it certainly makes your trip more enjoyable, it isn’t as important as on-time performance.

Wi-Fi: Worth 5%

While we only weighted this at 5%, it’s still important to include. Having Wi-Fi is expected, but many airports are still behind the times (I’m looking at you, Maui!).

Many people count on that time between flights to get a bit of work in or catch up on favorite shows. But if your flight gets delayed or canceled, that unlimited Wi-Fi access becomes even more necessary.

Unlimited access with no time limits earned a perfect score of 5, while those with limited access earned fewer points.

More than half (46 out of 60) airports provide unlimited access or allow for unlimited repeat access, but there are still many airports that only have access in the ticketing areas or allow 30 minutes of time.

Overall Scoring

We took all of the data above for all 60 airports and weighted it as noted to arrive at our best and worst 10 airports in the U.S. For reference, the best 10 had scores ranging from 3.6 to 4.51, while the bottom 10 came in much lower at 2.03 to 2.49.

Seattle-Tacoma International Airport ( SEA ), Orlando International Airport ( MCO ), Harry Reid International Airport ( LAS ), Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport ( DFW ), Salt Lake City International Airport ( SLC ), and John Wayne Airport (SNA) were all very close to making the cut coming within .1 of the best 10.

On the flip side, Cincinnati International Airport and Cleveland Hopkins International Airport barely escaped the bottom 10 by less than a point. They’re definitely on our radar!

So, what do you think? Did we get it right? While the data may show one thing, we know it often comes down to personal preference.

What airport is your favorite to fly into? What airport do you avoid at all costs? Do you sacrifice premier lounge access to avoid long delays?

Fort Myers’ Southwest Florida International Airport was named the best airport in the U.S. by Travel Lens, a digital publication highlighting travel destinations around the world. It pitted the 50 busiest airports against each other to reveal the best in the country based on a range of factors, including wait times, passenger satisfaction levels and carbon dioxide emissions. RSW scored an 8.06 out of 10 to edge John Wayne Airport (7.96) in Orange County, California; and Portland International Airport (7.86) in Oregon. While it may not be the biggest airport in terms of area, RSW is currently the second-busiest single-runway airport in the country. However, it still manages a wait time of just 16 minutes as well as low pollution levels, the report states. Tampa International and Dallas Love Field rounded out the top five highest-ranking airports.

  • A car manufacturer wants to promote its electric vehicles to environmentally conscious users living in the city after office hours. The advertising is presented on a page with related content (such as an article on climate change actions) after 6:30 p.m. to users whose non-precise location suggests that they are in an urban zone.
  • A large producer of watercolour paints wants to carry out an online advertising campaign for its latest watercolour range, diversifying its audience to reach as many amateur and professional artists as possible and avoiding showing the ad next to mismatched content (for instance, articles about how to paint your house). The number of times that the ad has been presented to you is detected and limited, to avoid presenting it too often.
  • If you read several articles about the best bike accessories to buy, this information could be used to create a profile about your interest in bike accessories. Such a profile may be used or improved later on, on the same or a different website or app to present you with advertising for a particular bike accessory brand. If you also look at a configurator for a vehicle on a luxury car manufacturer website, this information could be combined with your interest in bikes to refine your profile and make an assumption that you are interested in luxury cycling gear.
  • An apparel company wishes to promote its new line of high-end baby clothes. It gets in touch with an agency that has a network of clients with high income customers (such as high-end supermarkets) and asks the agency to create profiles of young parents or couples who can be assumed to be wealthy and to have a new child, so that these can later be used to present advertising within partner apps based on those profiles.

It wants to target advertising to users who previously looked at running shoes on its mobile app. Tracking technologies might be used to recognise that you have previously used the mobile app to consult running shoes, in order to present you with the corresponding advertisement on the app.
  • A profile created for personalised advertising in relation to a person having searched for bike accessories on a website can be used to present the relevant advertisement for bike accessories on a mobile app of another organisation.
  • You read several articles on how to build a treehouse on a social media platform. This information might be added to a profile to mark your interest in content related to outdoors as well as do-it-yourself guides (with the objective of allowing the personalisation of content, so that for example you are presented with more blog posts and articles on treehouses and wood cabins in the future).
  • You have viewed three videos on space exploration across different TV apps. An unrelated news platform with which you have had no contact builds a profile based on that viewing behaviour, marking space exploration as a topic of possible interest for other videos.
  • You read articles on vegetarian food on a social media platform and then use the cooking app of an unrelated company. The profile built about you on the social media platform will be used to present you vegetarian recipes on the welcome screen of the cooking app.
  • You have viewed three videos about rowing across different websites. An unrelated video sharing platform will recommend five other videos on rowing that may be of interest to you when you use your TV app, based on a profile built about you when you visited those different websites to watch online videos.
  • You have clicked on an advertisement about a “black Friday” discount by an online shop on the website of a publisher and purchased a product. Your click will be linked to this purchase. Your interaction and that of other users will be measured to know how many clicks on the ad led to a purchase.
  • You are one of very few to have clicked on an advertisement about an “international appreciation day” discount by an online gift shop within the app of a publisher. The publisher wants to have reports to understand how often a specific ad placement within the app, and notably the “international appreciation day” ad, has been viewed or clicked by you and other users, in order to help the publisher and its partners (such as agencies) optimise ad placements.
  • You have read a blog post about hiking on a mobile app of a publisher and followed a link to a recommended and related post. Your interactions will be recorded as showing that the initial hiking post was useful to you and that it was successful in interesting you in the related post. This will be measured to know whether to produce more posts on hiking in the future and where to place them on the home screen of the mobile app.
  • You were presented a video on fashion trends, but you and several other users stopped watching after 30 seconds. This information is then used to evaluate the right length of future videos on fashion trends.
  • The owner of an online bookstore wants commercial reporting showing the proportion of visitors who consulted and left its site without buying, or consulted and bought the last celebrity autobiography of the month, as well as the average age and the male/female distribution of each category. Data relating to your navigation on its site and to your personal characteristics is then used and combined with other such data to produce these statistics.
  • An advertiser wants to better understand the type of audience interacting with its adverts. It calls upon a research institute to compare the characteristics of users who interacted with the ad with typical attributes of users of similar platforms, across different devices. This comparison reveals to the advertiser that its ad audience is mainly accessing the adverts through mobile devices and is likely in the 45-60 age range.
  • A technology platform working with a social media provider notices a growth in mobile app users, and sees based on their profiles that many of them are connecting through mobile connections. It uses a new technology to deliver ads that are formatted for mobile devices and that are low-bandwidth, to improve their performance.
  • An advertiser is looking for a way to display ads on a new type of consumer device. It collects information regarding the way users interact with this new kind of device to determine whether it can build a new mechanism for displaying advertising on this type of device.
  • A travel magazine has published an article on its website about the new online courses proposed by a language school, to improve travelling experiences abroad. The school’s blog posts are inserted directly at the bottom of the page, and selected on the basis of your non-precise location (for instance, blog posts explaining the course curriculum for different languages than the language of the country you are situated in).
  • A sports news mobile app has started a new section of articles covering the most recent football games. Each article includes videos hosted by a separate streaming platform showcasing the highlights of each match. If you fast-forward a video, this information may be used to select a shorter video to play next.
  • An advertising intermediary delivers ads from various advertisers to its network of partnering websites. It notices a large increase in clicks on ads relating to one advertiser, and uses data regarding the source of the clicks to determine that 80% of the clicks come from bots rather than humans.
  • Clicking on a link in an article might normally send you to another page or part of the article. To achieve this, 1°) your browser sends a request to a server linked to the website, 2°) the server answers back (“here is the article you asked for”), using technical information automatically included in the request sent by your device, to properly display the information / images that are part of the article you asked for. Technically, such exchange of information is necessary to deliver the content that appears on your screen.

  • Most purposes explained in this notice rely on the storage or accessing of information from your device when you use an app or visit a website. For example, a vendor or publisher might need to store a cookie on your device during your first visit on a website, to be able to recognise your device during your next visits (by accessing this cookie each time).
  • An online retailer wants to advertise a limited sale on running shoes.

Before we list the top U.S. international airports, let’s take a global look. London’s Heathrow Airport is, once again, the world’s most internationally connected airport, according to a new report.

That designation comes from global travel data provider OAG’s Megahubs Index 2023 , which is compiled every year.

OAG’s flight data platform contains a comprehensive airline schedule and global flight connections database. Its Megahubs Index is compiled by comparing the number of scheduled connections to and from international flights with the number of destinations served by each of the world’s 100 largest and busiest airports and the 100 largest international airports.

While news of Heathrow’s ranking stands to reason since the airport previously held that position in 2019, before the COVID-19 pandemic crimped international travel, what is surprising is that John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York is now the second most internationally connected airport. Remarkably, JFK was ranked number 18 in OAG’s Megahubs Index in 2019.

“With American Airlines and Delta Air Lines adding new destinations out of New York, along with Air Senegal, Air New Zealand, and others having launched or reopened previously served routes, it’s no surprise JFK exceeded expectations to climb to #2 in the world,” John Grant, chief analyst at OAG, said in a statement.

Top 10 U.S. International Airports With The Most Global Connections

The OAG Megahubs Index 2023 ranks the top 50 international airport megahubs. Interestingly, many of those international airports are located in the U.S.

Here are the top 10 U.S. airport megahubs with the highest number of possible global connections according to OAG’s Megahubs Index 2023.

  • John F. Kennedy International , New York
  • Chicago O’Hare International , Illinois
  • Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, Georgia
  • Newark Liberty International , New Jersey
  • Los Angeles International , California
  • Dallas Fort Worth International , Texas
  • Miami International Airport, Florida
  • George Bush Intercontinental, Texas
  • Seattle–Tacoma International, Washington
  • San Francisco International Airport, California

Regional and Smaller International Airports in the U.S.

Federal Aviation Administration’s data show that almost 3 million people fly in and out of major USA airports each day. However, the U.S. also has several regional and smaller international airports that provide international connections to a more limited extent.

Some notable examples include:

Orlando International Airport (MCO)

With 35 domestic and international destinations, Orlando International Airport is the busiest hub in the state of Florida.

Detroit Metropolitan Airport (DTW)

Detroit Metropolitan Airport serves as an important hub for both domestic and international travel to various destinations in North America, Europe, and Asia.

Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD)

Washington Dulles International Airport offers connections to numerous international destinations and serves as a hub for several airlines.

Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT)

From Charlotte Douglas International Airport you can fly to 180 destinations, 36 of which are international locations, plus three U.S. territories.

Denver International Airport (DEN)

Denver International Airport primarily handles domestic flights, but you can fly to 218 destinations with 25 airlines

Minneapolis–Saint Paul International Airport (MSP)

The top international destinations from Minneapolis–Saint Paul International Airport are Toronto and Cancun.

Harry Reid International Airport (LAS)

Formerly known as McCarran International Airport, Harry Reid International Airport serves the Las Vegas Valley, a metropolitan area in Nevada, United States. The top international destinations from here are Toronto and Vancouver.

Salt Lake City International Airport (SLC)

Salt Lake City International Airport (SLC) is an international airport located in Salt Lake City, Utah, United States. It serves as a hub for Delta Air Lines and offers flights to a variety of domestic as well as international destinations.

Fort Lauderdale International Airport (FLL)

FLL is an international airport located in Broward County, Florida, United States. It serves as a major gateway for travelers to and from the area, offering flights to various domestic and foreign destinations.

Domestic Air Travel In The U.S.

The U.S. is the world’s largest market for domestic air travel. With that in mind, OAG also analyzed U.S. airport megahubs to determine which ones have the highest ratio of possible scheduled connections to the number of destinations served by that airport.

Interestingly, Chicago O’Hare International ranked first. While Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International may be the world’s busiest airport , it had a lower ratio of possible scheduled connections to the number of destinations served by the airport — so it was ranked second by OAG.

Here are the top 10 U.S. domestic airport megahubs according to OAG.

  • Chicago O’Hare International Airport, Illinois
  • Denver International Airport, Colorado
  • Dallas Fort Worth International Airport, Texas
  • Charlotte Douglas International Airport, North Carolina
  • Seattle–Tacoma International Airport, Washington
  • Los Angeles International Airport, California
  • Harry Reid International Airport, Nevada
  • Detroit Metropolitan, Michigan

Are There Many International Airports in the USA?

Compared to the total number of airports, the number of international airports in the U.S. is relatively low with only 118 international airports as of 2018. This data could be out-of-date, but by one or two as few changes are made to this list.

Some regional airports in the U.S. do offer limited international flights to select destinations. However, major international airports generally handle a more extensive range of international flights.

Research round up: eight u.s. airports rank in the top 25 most internationally connected.

October 30, 2019 By Jamie Mageau, Director of Research Products, U.S. Travel Association

Each month, the U.S. Travel Association sends its members the  U.S. Travel Outlook , which provides insight into the current state of the economy and related industry trends, plus other relevant data from the travel and tourism sector.

Here are some of October 2019’s most compelling findings from the U.S. Travel research team.

O’Hare Leads the Way in Intl’l Connectivity Eight U.S. airports rank in the top 25 most internationally connected, according to OAG’s 2019 Megahubs Index . Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport led the pack among U.S. airports, ranking third globally behind Heathrow Airport and Frankfurt Airport. Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta Airport—which is also the world’s busiest airport overall—was the only other North American airport to crack the top 10. Los Angeles, New York’s John F. Kennedy, Dallas-Fort Worth, Miami, Houston and Newark rounded out the list of U.S. airports in the top 25.

United Airlines (46%), Delta Air Lines (79%) and American Airlines (22%) are the dominant carriers at O’Hare, Hartsfield-Jackson and Los Angeles, respectively.

Fill up on Pump Five If your destination doesn’t require the use of one of America’s well-connected airports, driving is an affordable alternative.

At just $2.68 per gallon, the average national gas price for September 2019 was 24 cents lower than this time last year, according to the Energy Information Administration . Prices continued to fall in October, registering an average of $2.63 the week of October 14.

“The national gas price average has been gradually decreasing the past three weeks and we expect this trend to continue, barring any major industry or geopolitical events,” said AAA spokesperson Jeanette Casselano,. “Drivers in some states are paying 40 cents less per gallon than they were last October.”

Not-so-Golden Week One of the most popular weeks for Chinese travel experienced a slowdown this year. Overseas travel during China’s National Day Golden Week (October 1-7) was reportedly down 15% compared to last year, while domestic trips grew nearly 8%.

Earlier this year, the U.S. Department of Commerce’s National Travel and Tourism Office announced that inbound Chinese travel to the U.S. fell 5.7% in 2018 —the first time since 2003 that Chinese travel to the U.S. declined from the prior year. While there are a number of factors contributing to Chinese travelers’ desire to stay closer to home, it is crucial that Brand USA is reauthorized so the U.S. can continue promoting itself in the lucrative Chinese market.

U.S. Travel Executive Vice President of Public Affairs and Policy Tori Barnes this week told a congressional subcommittee that the U.S. will start feeling the effects of decreased international tourism unless Congress renews Brand USA. In her testimony, Barnes also cited the nearly $7,000 Chinese visitors to the U.S. spend per trip.

World's busiest airports show surge in international travel. Here are the rankings

  • Airports in Tokyo and London jumped in the rankings as international travel returned last year.
  • Domestic U.S. airports had become more popular during the pandemic amid international travel restrictions.
  • Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport once again topped the list as the world's busiest airport.

International travel roared back last year, pushing airports from London to Tokyo up in a global ranking of passenger traffic.

Dubai International Airport ranked as the second busiest in 2023, up from fifth place in 2022 and fourth place in 2019, according to Airports Council International's preliminary ranking, which was released on Monday. Passenger traffic to Tokyo Haneda International Airport jumped 55% last year from 2022, and the airport ranked fifth, up from 16th place a year earlier.

Global airports served 8.5 billion passengers last year, up 27% from 2022 but still about 6% below pre-pandemic counts, ACI said, citing preliminary figures.

The resurgence of international travel has been a bright spot for airlines with big international networks, while ultra-low-cost, domestic-focused U.S. airlines have struggled in recent months. Domestic U.S. airports continued to post big gains in passenger counts, but some slipped in the rankings compared with the middle of the pandemic , when international travel restrictions limited long-haul trips abroad.

Nearly 78 million people used Denver International Airport last year, up 12% from 2022, but the airport, a major hub of United Airlines, fell in ACI's ranking to sixth place from third.

Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, Delta Air Lines' biggest hub, once again topped the list of the busiest airports, serving 104.7 million passengers, ACI said.

Here are the 2023 rankings (with 2022 rankings in parentheses):

  • Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (1)
  • Dubai International Airport (5)
  • Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport (2)
  • London Heathrow (8)
  • Tokyo Haneda International Airport (16)
  • Denver International Airport (3)
  • Istanbul Airport (7)
  • Los Angeles International Airport (6)

travel lens airport rankings

As the summer tourism season progresses, travel headaches such as delays and cancellations become more likely.

Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport isn't immune to issues. On Wednesday, June 5, heavy aircraft traffic delayed flights at the airport .

But a new study showed flyers may find fewer disruptions at Sky Harbor compared to other airports. AirHelp , a claims management company focused on airline passenger rights, released a report that showed the Phoenix airport ranked among the airports with the fewest disruptions in May 2024.

AirHelp's methodology involved ranking airports with 10,000 flights or more in May and assessing how many flights had a disruption. The company considers delays, cancellations, overbooking, denied booking and lost or damaged luggage as examples of a flight disruption .
