7 Things I Loved, Plus 4 Things I Didn’t During Princess’s Alaska Cruisetour

  • Cruises and Sailing
  • Types of Travel

On my first morning after embarking on the Royal Princess Hamilton Cruise ship on a sea and land cruise from Vancouver through the Inside Passage of Alaska and up to Fairbanks, I sat on my portside balcony and watched the gray seas as the pale morning sun rose.

A sudden movement caught my eye, and the head of a humpback whale rose directly out of the water, suspended for a brief moment before it disappeared under the sea.

“Did I just see that?” I muttered sleepily to myself. As if to answer me, the telltale poof of water shot out of the sea, followed by the dark, subtle hump of the whale as he followed alongside our massive 1,083-foot long ship .

Instantly, I ran inside to wake my travel buddy, but by the time he got to the balcony, the whale was long gone. However, that whale sighting was a premonition of extraordinary adventures to come on the Princess Cruises’ 12-17 day Connoisseur Alaska Cruisetour .

From luscious food choices and all-day entertainment to excursions and off-shore adventures through Alaska’s small coastal communities, the Alaska Cruisetour was probably one of the most fun trips I had taken all year. While I had my first cruise in January on a small excursion ship, I was invited and hosted by Princess Cruises to experience my first “big” cruise ship. For some reason, I had poo-pooed the idea of the big “floating city” cruise ships in the past, but the 12 days of sailing and traveling with Princess changed my mind.

I get it now. I get why people dream of cruises and just how easy it is to relax and just enjoy when you are being pampered, cared for, and catered to by a cruise ship company. Coming from the eyes of a brand-new cruiser (this won’t be my last cruise, I guarantee you), here are the seven things I loved — plus the four things I didn’t — during the Princess Alaska Cruisetour.

7 Things I Loved

1. medallion magnificant and the staff.

aboard Princess Cruise Line

The Royal Princess is a Princess MedallionClass™ ship with a capacity of 3,560 guests. The MedallionClass ships use touchless technologies in the form of a small, quarter-sized customizable Medallion and an app to enhance and personalize individual experiences and health protocols.

This thing is so cool. I had my Medallion customized with an astrological symbol and ordered the rubber wristband. While wearing it, the Medallion automatically unlocks and locks my stateroom door as I enter it, allows staff to find me anywhere on the ship to deliver my daily Bloody Mary, allows for touch-free boarding and purchases, let me find my travel companion on the ship, and more.

“So let’s say you’re out tanning by the pool and you want to get some extra sunscreen, you can go on the app on your phone and order sunscreen which will be purchased through the app and delivered to you where you are anywhere on the ship,” said Briana Latner, public relations and marketing for Princess Cruises. “We’ve also introduced ‘Dine My Way,’ which helps you make reservations in the main dining rooms and the specialty dining, helps get rid of wait times and helps you with your special preferences.”

Another feature of the Princess Medallion is the Ocean Compass, which allows you to locate and message your travel companions. Whomever you are traveling with is automatically named as travel companions in the app, but you can remove each other if you choose to.

“Sometimes there are kids who are teenagers. They can go off on their own, but you want to make sure you know where they are and they’re safe,” Latner said. “Many people who are traveling with parents or the elderly who may get disoriented find it’s been really helpful  to be able to find each other too.”

Touchless tech on Princess Cruises

Travel blogger Erin Cohen said the Medallion created a level of ease on her trip that shocked her.

“It makes you eat too much,” she laughed. “Everything comes to you at the snap of a finger or the touch of a button. The Medallion makes life almost too easy, but it’s great.”

Combined with the Princess Medallion, the staff on the boat is top-notch. Our stateroom was cleaned twice a day at least (the Medallion lets staff know when you are out of your room so they don’t disturb you), the bartenders all know your name and preferred drink, and every crewmember greets you with a cheerful hello.

Using the app and the Medallion was super convenient when it came to purchases, ordering, getting around, and more.

Pro Tip: Download the app before you embark on the cruise to upload safety and health documents, pre-book activities and dining, and get used to all the features. It’s a lot to learn. You can order the Medallion ahead of time and either have it sent to you prior to the cruise or you can pick it up upon embarkation.

Fun Fact: The Pacific Princess was the star ship in the 1977 television series called The Love Boat . That series also made the concept of a sea-going vacation popular with millions of people and has been widely credited with fueling the dramatic expansion of the cruise industry.

2. By Land And By Sea

Princess's own scenic rail car

The Royal Princess Alaska Cruisetours are a combo land and sea experience. In addition to a 7-day Voyage of the Glaciers Alaska cruise that includes two glacier-viewing experiences and stops in the small Alaskan communities of Juneau, Ketchikan, Skagway, and Whittier (Anchorage), you’ll also explore Alaska’s interior with a guided land exploration tour.

Once you’ve disembarked from the ship, you can spend 3 or more nights on land at the various Princess Wilderness Lodges , including the Kenai Princess Wilderness Lodge, the Mt. McKinley Princess Wilderness Lodge, the Denali Princess Wilderness Lodge, and the Fairbanks Princess Wilderness Lodge.

Princess Wilderness Lodge

These lodges are situated riverside near the legendary Denali National Park and Preserve, on the stunningly beautiful Kenai Peninsula, and in Fairbanks. Each lodge offers its own unique personality.

You will also travel by rail in a private Princess Cruises scenic railroad car and by tour bus to the various locations.

We were on the Connoisseur Alaska Cruisetour , which offers the highest level of service with a dedicated tour director, the 7-day Voyages of the Glaciers cruise, 5-10 nights on land, travel on the Princess Alaska rail service, stays at Kenai Fjords National Park and Denali National Park , a Tundra Wilderness Tour into Denali National Park (We saw three grizzly bears!), sightseeing opportunities, and most meals included.

What I loved about this option was the ability to see not only the glaciers and wonders of coastal Alaska along the Inside Passage, but a chance to explore the famed national parks of Alaska’s rugged and beautiful interior. It truly was the best of both worlds.

“You see pictures but to see it in person is just like, it’s hard to believe this is even real. The whole time I was in Alaska, I just kept saying it was like a movie set,” said Cohen.

3. All The Choices (And Unlimited Drinks)

fine dining on Princess Cruise Line

So maybe you are craving a pepperoni pizza while you lounge in one of the many hot tubs on the 16th-floor deck. Maybe one night, all you dream of is a big juicy steak with a Maine lobster tail. Maybe you want a lot of choices from the all-day buffet.

On the Royal Princess, the more than a dozen dining choices come in many different flavors, ranging from high-end steakhouse to Italian cuisine to sushi. Like many cruise ships, the Royal Princess has a buffet that features Asian, Indian, American, and Latino cuisine, as well as breakfast items, fresh fruit, a pastry bar, and more. On the fifth floor in the central Vista, a small deli is open 24/7 for the late night/early morning crowd.

The ship also has numerous bars, and because we were given the unlimited drinks option, we put those to good use. From the poolside bars to the cozy Wheelhouse Bar with its live music, you’ll not have to worry about finding the perfect cocktail or Alaska beer to sip on.

Although I dined at the fancy Crown Grill and Sabatini’s, the buffet was our go-to option most days due to the sheer variety of foods to choose from. Be warned, though: It’s easy to let your eyes be bigger than your stomach, and you can end up eating more than you planned because the food is just so tasty.

4. Lots Of Viewing Areas

Denali National Park and Preserve

The Alaska Cruisetour I was on started from Vancouver and sailed through Alaska’s Inside Passage through some of the most beautiful scenery I’d ever seen. With glaciers, waterfalls, misty mountains, and otters and whales frolicking in the waves, it would be a crime not to take it all in.

I loved all the decks and viewing areas on the Royal Princess. From our own private balcony to picture windows throughout the ship to expansive decks, the views just kept coming.

Pro Tip: Bring binoculars! I really regretted not bringing the pair I own. Trust me, you won’t regret taking them when the whales and otters make their appearance.

5. Performances And Special Programs

plenty to do and watch on Royal Princess's Cruisetour

You’ll never get bored on this Cruisetour. Starting as early as 6 a.m. every day, the Royal Princess has events, special programs, classes, naturalist talks, and fun activities. From morning stretching on the deck to art auctions and contests to game shows and line dancing classes, this ship doesn’t stop!

In addition to the hourly activities, excursions, and options during the day, The Royal Princess presents big musical shows, comedians, naturalist talks, and more in its expansive Princess Theatre. The smaller bars and venues feature live musicians and fun, silly game shows while the main Vista area of the fifth floor holds concerts and dance parties. The ship even has a disco, a hopping casino with slots and table games, a very large fitness area on the 17th deck, poolside movies, a pickleball court, a Discovery Camp for kids, and more.

Every day, a daily newsletter listing all the activities on the ship is delivered to your room, so it’s easy to find and choose what performances or classes you’d like to take part in. If you are bored at all on this ship, that’s on you! Seriously, you’ll have a hard time picking which fun activity to do.

6. Being Pampered

After days of hiking, exploring Alaska’s small communities, whale watching, dancing all night, and maybe having one too many cocktails, it’s nice to be pampered. The Royal Princess’ onboard Lotus Spa brings you to a place of peace and Zen with services like traditional massage, acupuncture, facials like the La Therapie HydraLift facial, couples massage, and Aroma Stone Therapy Massage.

After relaxing, cruisers can head to The Enclave , a getaway of thermal suites and a hydro-therapy pool with a cascading rain shower and therapeutic air jets. Sweat out your worries at a Turkish-style steam bath, steam rooms, and dry saunas for purification and detoxification, then doze off on the heated stone beds or relaxing water beds.

Another pampering experience is Royal Princess’ The Sanctuary , an adult-only retreat on the top deck with private cabanas, food and drink, and al fresco massages. The “Serenity Stewards” are quietly efficient in delivering everything you need, from fresh mimosas to towels.

7. All The Excursions

With 12 days of adventure, it would be impossible for me to list all the land and sea excursions available through the Royal Princess Cruisetour. Thankfully, you’ll be able to find all the options through the Medallion app and with the onboard concierges.

For my excursions, I went out on a crab boat in Ketchikan to learn about crab harvesting and to stuff myself silly on Dungeness crab, roared up winding mountain trails on a UTV, spotted whales, climbed glaciers, kayaked pristine mountain glacial lakes, toured and spotted wildlife on a Tundra Wilderness Tour in Denali National Park and so much more.

The excursions range from the sedate and relaxing to the wild and extreme, so there’s a little bit of everything for anyone. You can see the list of available excursions here .

4 Things I Didn’t Love

1. prices of excursions.

Alaska is expensive. There’s no getting around that fact. Being able to enjoy the Alaska landscape on a guided excursion is going to cost you. Some of the most expensive excursions include flights on small planes and helicopters, but they tend to be the most popular as well, like the Denali Flightseeing tours and helicopter tours of surrounding glaciers.

You aren’t required to purchase excursions, however. If you’d rather explore the different ports on your own, you can do that too.

White Pass Rail in Skagway

2. Not Enough Time In Each Port Or Land Lodge

When you are cruising, you have a schedule to keep. You might fall in love with tiny little Skagway, but you only have a day in port. You may want to spend more time at the Kenai Princess Wilderness Lodge with its cozy rooms and fireplaces, but you only have one night.

The fact that you do not have control over how long you can stay in any one place is certainly not Princess’ fault, but it is a bummer and a fact of life when cruising.

3. No Coffee In The Room

One of my biggest pet peeves in life is not having coffee available in my room when traveling. Yes, ordering coffee to the room was easy and the staff at Princess were on top of my caffeine addiction, but it would have been nice to have one of those little coffee makers tucked away so I could make my own coffee.

One great thing about the Royal Princess is the ability to order coffee and breakfast the night before. Each day, you can fill out a form listing what items you’d like to order and what time they should be delivered, so that’s convenient.

4. Staffing Problems At The Lodges

Like so many other destinations, Alaska has a worker shortage. That desperate need for seasonal and long-term employees has led to some staffing issues at some of the lodges. While the Royal Princess ship boasts 1,346 crew members from more than 30 different countries, some of the lodges had problems filling spots, which led to slowdowns, some maintenance issues, and longer wait times.

My best advice is to stay patient with the destinations and with the staff that is working. Everyone is doing the best they can with less.

All in all, my first “big cruise” experience was stellar and has made me a believer! Hopefully, this won’t be my last cruise, and if you yearn for an easy, well-organized way to experience Alaska, the Royal Princess Alaska Cruisetour is the way to go.

Princess Cruises deployes 7 ships in Alaska in 2023 (14 itineraries & 25 cruisetours)

CruiseMapper logo

Princess Cruises announced updates for the upcoming 2023 cruise and cruisetour season in Alaska. As the leading cruise line in Alaska, Princess is renowned for its commitment to sustainability, immersive programming, and unparalleled guest experiences.

The company sails 7 ships throughout The Great Land across 14 itineraries and 25 land-sea vacations, including the newest ship Discovery Princess along with Royal , Ruby , Majestic , Grand , Crown , and Sapphire Princess .

One of the highlights of the 2023 season is the expanded Wild for Alaska Seafood menu, available to all guests sailing with Princess in Alaska. This industry-first initiative, introduced in 2022, features a rotation of fresh Alaska seafood dishes, along with destination-inspired cocktails made from local spirits. Princess Cruises has partnered with Pacific Seafood, Alaska Seafood, and Alaska Leader Seafood, all known for their environmentally responsible practices and sustainable fishing methods, to develop this unique dining experience. Guests can indulge in a variety of Alaska seafood, including multiple varieties of salmon, wild Alaska cod, halibut, rockfish, Dungeness crabs, spot prawns, and razor clams, highlighting the freshest ingredients from the region.

In addition to the Wild for Alaska Seafood menu, Princess Cruises is also introducing a new Garden-to-Table menu for cruisetour guests staying at the Fairbanks Princess Riverside Lodge. Guests can stroll through the lodge's large garden, filled with Alaska-grown vegetables and flowers thriving in the summer sunshine, and enjoy the chefs' menu creations using the fresh produce harvested throughout the season.

The beverage program for the 2023 season is also getting a makeover, with decadent coffee and hot chocolate-based creations, themed frozen drinks, Alaska wines, and flights of Alaska beer and cocktails being introduced. Guests can warm up with delicious drinks like Spiced Rum Hot Chocolate and Gingerbread Breakfast, sample Alaska beers through tastings or order beer flights, indulge in themed frozen drinks like Ketchikan Strawberry Shortcake and Alaskan Polar Bear, enjoy Alaska cocktails made from local spirits, and even participate in the Alaska Wine Experience with wine pairings featuring Alaska salmon.

The brand's commitment to showcasing the beauty of Alaska goes beyond dining and beverages. Every cruise itinerary includes at least one glacier-viewing experience, with Princess taking more guests to Glacier Bay National Park than any other cruise line. Cruises also visit marquee ports like Juneau , Ketchikan , and Skagway , with late-night calls in Juneau on select itineraries. Guests can choose from over 150 shore excursions, including unique experiences like lumberjack shows, dog sledding on glaciers, flightseeing adventures, and wildlife viewing tours to spot whales, bears, and more. Exclusive to Princess Cruises, Cook My Catch allows guests to reel in a fish during a fishing excursion and have it cooked for their dinner that night, creating unforgettable culinary memories.

For those looking to explore more of Alaska's interior, Princess Cruises offers cruisetours that seamlessly combine a cruise with land tour options, including visits to Denali National Park and Princess' five signature Wilderness Lodges. The 17-night Princess Connoisseur Cruisetour is back by popular demand, featuring 10 nights on land with stays at each of the five Princess Wilderness Lodges and visits to five national parks.

Discovery Princess cruise ship

Princess Cruises also takes care of guests' transportation with their Direct-to-the-Wilderness rail service, which takes guests from the ship through the heart of Alaska with breathtaking scenery to the Denali-based wilderness lodges, providing more time to explore the vast interior of this stunning state.

The Princess Medallion is a quarter-sized device that has truly revolutionized the cruising experience.

It is unique to Princess Cruises and you won’t find anything like it on other ships.

The Medallion comes with a free lanyard, or you can choose to purchase a wearable accessory once you are on board.

Some of the options include a necklace, bracelet, clip, or sports band. We loved the sports band!

All of your information is stored in this little device that is waterproof, sand-proof, and sun-proof.

This is what you will scan when you are getting on and off the ship. It also has several other unique and helpful features.

Your Medallion is what you’ll use to unlock your stateroom door. It is completely touchless and will unlock your door as soon as you approach your room.

Your Medallion also has a location-based feature that acts as a tracker.

If you order a drink or a bite to eat from OceanNow on the Princess app, your server will be able to find you anywhere on the ship to deliver it to you.

We were up on the top deck and ordered a drink but decided to go down to the library to play Scrabble.

Instead of having to wait for our drink to get delivered, the server was able to find us 9 floors down in the library!

There are also interactive screens, called ship portals, on each level by the elevators.

You can scan your Medallion at the portal and it will pull up a customized screen.

Here you can track your travel companions to see where they are hanging out at on the ship.

Our kids are older and enjoyed having some independence on the ship, so it gave me peace of mind to know where they were.

You can also play a variety of games on the portal with PlayOcean. There is even a digital scavenger hunt around the ship.

PlayOcean is linked to your Medallion so that it keeps track of your score. It even shows the high scores on the ship so that you can compete with others.

The MedallionClass app is also very helpful throughout your cruise.

Here you will find the JourneyView that lists all of the activities offered throughout each day.

It allows you to bookmark the ones you would like to attend so that you don’t miss a single event.

The OceanCompass can be found on the app and will help you find your way around the ship. It also allows you to message or locate friends or family that you are traveling with.

You can even make dining reservations, order food, book excursions, and much more through the app.

Each ship has several room options, including interior rooms, balcony rooms, deluxe balconies, mini-suites, and full-suites.

We booked the mini suite on board the Royal Princess , and it was so spacious and beautiful.

The 323-square-foot suite features a queen bed, or two twin beds, and a sitting area with a couch that converts to a sofa bed.

The bathroom is quite roomy with a full-sized bath and a massage shower head. It also has generous closet space, a desk, a mini fridge, and two flat-screen televisions.

Our favorite feature, however, is the balcony. My number one tip when taking a Princess Alaska cruise is to splurge for a room with a balcony.

There is nothing quite like waking up to the view of a glacier right outside your bedroom or enjoying a peaceful sunset all to yourself.

Each room on the Royal Princess cruise ship also features the Princess Luxury Bed.

These beds were designed with the help of a board-certified sleep expert and offer the ultimate comfort.

The scientifically engineered mattresses are topped with a two-inch pillow top, Jacquard-woven linens, fluffy duvets, and the most comfortable pillow you’ll ever sleep on.

I guarantee that you’ll get a good night’s sleep and wake up feeling refreshed every morning of your cruise!

If you book a suite with the Reserve Collection, you’ll receive additional perks like access to the concierge lounge, premier dining benefits, priority embarking and disembarking, and so much more.

We were so impressed with the food on the Royal Princess! There are so many dining options to choose from, and all the food we tried was so fresh and delicious.

Reservations are recommended for the main dining rooms and can be done on the MedallionClass app.

There will be two evenings at sea that are designated as formal nights and it’s a fun excuse to dress up for dinner.

I loved seeing our boys all dressed up, even if they complained about wearing a tie!

Afternoon tea is also held one of the days at sea.

You can order room service 24 hours a day at no extra charge. You can also have food delivered to you wherever you are on the ship through the MedallionClass app.

Is the specialty dining worth it on the Royal Princess?

In addition to the included dining options, there are also specialty restaurants that guests can choose to experience for an additional cover charge.

I would highly recommend making reservations for at least one of the specialty restaurants while at sea.

The elevated dining experience is sure to make your cruise even more memorable.

Whether you’re celebrating a birthday, anniversary, or just looking to make memories together as a family, a specialty dining experience is the perfect way to share that special love!

A few of our favorites include Sabatini’s Italian Trattoria, Crown Grill steakhouse, Ocean Terrace seafood bar, and the Chef’s Table Lumiere dinner.

Sabatini’s Italian Trattoria is a family-style restaurant that serves up the freshest authentic Italian cuisine.

What to Expect on a Royal Princess Alaska Cruise | Sabatini's Italian Trattoria #simplywander

It was even voted as one of the “Best Cruise Ship Specialty Restaurants” at sea by USA Today .

Each dish is bursting with flavor, and the presentation is impeccable.

Another perk of booking a suite is that suite guests get the privilege of enjoying breakfast at Sabatini’s.

You have to order the Apple Cinnamon Brioche French Toast! The toast was perfectly crisp on the outside and soft on the inside.

Crown Grill is a gourmet American steakhouse specializing in tender steaks right off the grill.

The menu is priced a la carte so you can order your favorite sushi rolls to enjoy while listening to the live music at the adjacent Crooner’s Bar.

If you are celebrating a special event while at sea, I highly recommend reserving a seat at the Chef’s Table Lumiere.

It truly is a memorable dining experience. We enjoyed a nice date night onboard while our youngest had a great time hanging out at Camp Discovery.

The evening will start with champagne and hor d’oeuvres at the Wheelhouse Bar led by the Executive Sous Chef and the Director of Restaurant Operations.

You’ll then proceed to the kitchen where you’ll get an exclusive behind-the-scenes tour of the galley.

The Executive Chef will even come out between courses to share a little bit about his culinary creations.

Seating is limited for this event, so be sure to make a reservation as soon as you get on board if this is something you are interested in doing.

The Gelato Shop is located near the Piazza and is the best place to go for a sweet treat.

There is a nominal fee for their hand-scooped authentic Italian gelato.

However, if you upgrade to the Princess Plus package, you receive special perks like two free specialty desserts a day.

This includes the gourmet milkshakes from the Gelato Shop that are to die for! Of course, they are best enjoyed with a sunset view from your balcony.

Other perks with the Princess Plus Package include WiFi, fitness classes, a beverage package, and more.

What kind of activities and entertainment are on board the Royal Princess cruise ship?

There is never a shortage of things to do on board the Royal Princess Alaska cruise!

We were especially impressed with the evening shows.

They featured comedians, magicians, and spectacular musical productions in the Princess Theater. Our family’s favorite was the comedian!

The Vista Lounge is also where they hold auditions for The Voice of the Ocean for those that would like to compete on the last night of the cruise.

In the evenings, head up to the top deck for the Movie Under the Stars event.

The answer to this question is a resounding YES! A cruise is the perfect family vacation.

We have traveled all over the world as a family and my kids said that this was one of their favorite trips ever. It is the perfect way to create lasting memories together as a family!

It is such a great value, considering it includes all of your accommodations, food, entertainment, childcare, and transportation to a different port every day.

There is so much on board to keep everyone of all ages entertained.

Older kids will especially appreciate the freedom to roam around and enjoy the extra independence you won’t find on other vacations.

An Alaskan cruise will also give your kids the opportunity to experience nature and culture with so many amazing excursions available at the ports.

Camp Discovery is the designated kid and teen center onboard the Royal Princess cruise ship. You’ll find spaces geared for 3 different age groups.

The Treehouse is for kids ages 3-7 years.

And the Beach House is a teen hang-out for youth ages 13-17 years.

They are packed with everything kids love including an air hockey table, Skee-ball, foosball, video and computer games, board games, movies, crafts, and more.

The centers are run by the friendly staff and they have so many fun activities planned throughout the day.

Older kids sign themselves in and out with a parent’s permission, but younger kids will need to be signed in and out by a parent for safety reasons.

Parents will especially love being able to enjoy a date night with a quiet dinner and evening show while the kids are having fun at the center.

I will say that an Alaskan cruise is often considered to be geared more toward the older generation.

It is true that you won’t see as many kids onboard, but we also appreciated that there wasn’t the spring break party vibe that you find on many Caribbean cruises.

We still felt like there were plenty of things to do for families and our Alaskan cruise quickly became one of our most memorable family vacations!

There are several different Princess Alaska Cruises to choose from so it may be hard to decide which one is best.

However, there are a few things you need to consider. Including, what port the cruise leaves from, the length of the cruise, and what ports the ship will stop at along the way.

The Princess Alaska cruises generally depart from either Seattle or Vancouver, BC so you’ll need to consider the cost of flights to either cruise terminal when choosing your trip.

What to Expect on a Royal Princess Alaska Cruise | Seattle #simplywander

You can also choose between a roundtrip cruise or a one-way southbound or northbound cruise.

If you book a one-way cruise, you will be able to experience more of Alaska as you cruise to Anchorage. However, you will also need to get a plane ticket in or out of Anchorage.

The length of the cruise varies from a short 4-day Sampler to a 14-day Grand Adventure. I would recommend a 7-day cruise, especially if it is your first time.

This will give you enough time to fully experience what Alaska has to offer, but it isn’t too long if you are worried about your sea legs.

When considering what ports you would like to visit, the must-see stops (especially on your first trip) are Juneau, Skagway, and Ketchikan.

I would also highly recommend booking a cruise that spends a day cruising through Glacier Bay National Park.

What to Expect on a Royal Princess Alaska Cruise | Glacier Bay National Park #simplywander

This is one of the most remote national parks that can only be accessed by plane or boat.

Princess Cruises is one of the only cruise lines that has a concession contract to visit the park, and you do not want to miss it!

For recommended things to do at each port, see our guide The Best Alaska Cruise Excursions at Each Port.

  • What is the best month to go on an Alaskan cruise? The Alaskan cruise season is relatively short from April-October. However, the best time to go is Mid-May to Mid-September when the weather is warmer and the whales start migrating back to Alaska. Just keep in mind that the weather is better in the summer months, but the rates and crowds are better in the spring and fall.
  • Do I need a passport for an Alaskan cruise? Yes. Even if you are a US citizen, you will still need a passport as every Alaskan cruise makes a stop in either Vancouver or Victoria, BC.
  • What should I pack for an Alaskan cruise? Even if you are visiting in the summer, you will want to dress in layers. I would recommend a lightweight puffer jacket that is easy to roll up and pack, as well as layers to wear underneath. You’ll want warm yet comfortable clothes to wear on the excursions. For the cruise ship, don’t forget a swimsuit and flip-flops if you plan to go in the pool or hot tub. You’ll also want to pack a few nice dresses or suits for the formal nights.
  • What is the average temperature on an Alaskan cruise? The average temperature in Alaska during late spring and early fall is in the 50s. During the summer months, the temperatures are generally in the 60s, so dress accordingly. Keep in mind that Alaska also experiences between 17-20 hours of daylight in the summer months.
  • When is the best time to see whales on an Alaskan cruise? Whales begin migrating back from Hawaii as early as April and stay in Alaska until as late as November. However, you will have the best chance of seeing whales from May-September.
  • Can you see the Northern Lights on an Alaskan cruise? Winter is the best time to see the Northern Lights in Alaska. However, it is possible to see the aurora borealis on a late September cruise if the conditions are right.

I hope this guide will help you to know what to expect on an Alaskan cruise onboard the Royal Princess. It is sure to be one of your most memorable experiences!

The City of Juneau Just Implemented Restrictions on Cruise Ships — Here’s Why

The new rule will go into effect in 2026.

princess cruise ship in alaska

John Elk/Getty Images

The Alaskan city of Juneau will cap cruise ship visitors in the coming years in an effort to combat overtourism in the popular state capital.

The City and Borough of Juneau (CBJ) reached an agreement with cruise lines to establish limits of 16,000 lower berths per day on Sundays through Fridays and a limit of 12,000 lower berths per day on Saturdays, according to the city . The new agreement will go into effect during the 2026 Alaska cruise season .

Lower berths essentially refer to passenger capacity on a ship.

“The cruise industry is vital to our local economy, and we need to improve our infrastructure and grow our tour capacity to create a great guest experience and reduce impacts on residents,” Juneau Visitor Industry Director Alexandra Pierce said in a statement. “With this agreement, we are committing to a cap to manage our busiest days and to meet annually to ensure that our visitor numbers remain sustainable.”

The agreement was signed by major cruise lines that stop in the city, including Carnival Corporation, Disney Cruise Line, Royal Caribbean, and Norwegian Cruise Line.

Renée Limoge Reeve, the vice president of government and community relations at the Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA), said the agreement “reflects the industry’s ongoing commitment to work with CBJ and the residents of Juneau to deliver win-win partnerships.”

This isn’t the first time the city has implemented rules to limit crowds. Last year, the city passed a similar measure limiting large ships to a maximum of five ships on the same day. That agreement went into effect this year.

Juneau also isn’t alone in placing restrictions on cruise ships. In 2022, the town of Bar Harbor, Maine, voted to limit disembarking passengers to no more than 1,000 people each day; and last year, the California city of Monterey effectively banned cruise ships by voting to terminate city services for them.

Find the best cruise for you

Featured cruise deals, cruising guide, why take a cruise vacation.

If you have a place on your bucket list, chances are, a cruise will get you there – provided the destination is along a coastline or inland waterway. Cruises cover the world, taking millions of passengers each year to regions such as the Caribbean, the Bahamas, Alaska, Europe, the Mediterranean and even Antarctica. Cruising offers a tremendous value, with trips that include your lodging, meals and entertainment – all rolled into one. Some luxury cruise lines even offer fully inclusive vacations, which cover drinks and tours ashore. And best of all, cruising means seeing the world conveniently after unpacking only once.

Cruises also provide a wonderful option for families, with many ships offering things like waterslides, mini-golf courses and fun clubs for kids, tweens and teens. While most are free, nursery programs can cost extra. Planning is easy: Pick your destination and the right ship (and line) for your travel style. The cruise line makes it simple, offering packages to help you save on extras like alcohol, shore tours or even airfare.

Travelers say they choose to cruise because cruising often costs less per night when compared with land vacations at a hotel, where they'll have to book -- and pay for -- every extra.

What are Tips for Finding Cheap Cruises?

If you're a flexible traveler, you'll have a better chance of finding cheap cruises. Take a cruise that doesn't sail over the summer or holidays, when prices are highest. Book an inside cabin, or take your chances with a "guarantee cabin," ideal for passengers who aren't picky about their stateroom location but really want the lowest price available. Book cabins on lower decks, which often come with lower prices than those rooms on higher floors – that is staterooms over suites.

Cruise brands such as Carnival Cruise Line, MSC Cruises, Norwegian Cruise Line and Royal Caribbean International offer rates that might drop as low as $75 per person per night -- and sometimes even lower.

If you want a real bargain, consider a transatlantic or repositioning cruise. These cruises are one-way or open-jaw trips, that start in one port and finish at another. You can score a deal sailing from Florida to Europe, for example, or even from New York to Florida. Just be aware, you'll probably have to pay a bit more for airfare to return.

What are Tips to Finding Last-Minute Cruise Deals?

While being flexible date wise will always get you the best last-minute cruise deals, it's particularly helpful if you live near a cruise port and can quickly drive there. That way you'll probably be able to jump on those deals that might pop up just a week or two before the ship is scheduled to sail.

Or if you don't have flexibility with either departure dates or embarkation locations, be willing to compromise on exact destinations. This will allow you to find a wider range of last-minute deals traveling to locations in their off-season or so-called shoulder season.

Do plenty of research and know what your ideal cruise is and costs on average, so both are already on your radar. When you see it drop, pounce! (Many cruise lines update pricing several times per day, so preparation is crucial.)

Best cruises in 2024

There's truly a cruise style and ship for everyone, and that has never been more the case than in 2024, as vessels continue to come in an array of sizes – from riverboats and expedition vessels to the largest-ever mega ships. And it's not an exaggeration to say some are loaded with so many activities that you couldn't possibly enjoy them all in a single sailing.

Families will find plenty of options and activities onboard big ships, which have transformed cruising, making the vessels as exciting as the destinations themselves. The Caribbean is always a great option for families, offering lots of sunshine, great beaches and culture. Alaska, famous for its incredible vistas and abundant wildlife, is also a solid family cruise option. Consider cruise brands such as Carnival Cruise Line, Princess Cruises, Royal Caribbean International, Norwegian Cruise Line, Disney Cruise Line, MSC Cruises and even Celebrity Cruises and Holland America Line for a great multi-generational voyage.

Or on the smaller side, by comparison, river cruising remains a hot ticket item this year, with exciting routes that send eager guests down the Danube or Rhine rivers in Europe or to lesser-frequented locations, like the Mekong River in Cambodia or Vietnam, or soon the Magdalena River in Colombia. Popular river cruises embark in timeless cities like Amsterdam, Budapest and Lisbon. River cruise lines to consider encompass Viking, AmaWaterways, Avalon Waterways, Scenic Luxury Cruises & Tours, Emerald Cruises, Tauck, Uniworld Boutique River Cruises and Riverside Luxury Cruises, as well as American Cruise Lines for a domestic alternative.

If you're an adventurer at heart, an expedition cruise might be best for you. These voyages, often onboard small ships (only a few hundred passengers tops), offer an intimate experience that brings passengers right up next to glaciers, whales, penguins and iguanas. Ships visit tiny spots all over the world – from pole to pole – including the Arctic, Alaska, Australia, Greenland, the Galapagos and, of course, Antarctica. Passengers will spend their time zodiacing, kayaking, hiking, biking and exploring with expert guides and knowledgeable naturalists. Expedition travelers love cruise lines such as Lindblad Expeditions-National Geographic, UnCruise Adventures, Silversea, HX (formerly Hurtigruten Expeditions), Ponant and Quark Expeditions, as well as an ever-expanding list that now even extends to Seabourn and Viking.

But for the most decadent form of travel, luxury cruises offer all-inclusive experiences onboard small to median-sized ships (usually under a thousand passengers) with perks like butlers, high-end amenities and personalized, intuitive service, not to mention the finest dining at sea. Ships often feature luxury touches like marble and crystal decor, intimate spaces and beautiful spas. Because luxury ships tend to be on the smaller size, they can often reach off-the-beaten-path destinations bigger ships simply cannot access -- ports like St. Tropez or Guadeloupe. If you're looking for a luxury cruise, consider Crystal, Seabourn, Regent Seven Seas Cruises, Silversea, Explora Journeys, Scenic Luxury Cruises & Tours, The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection and upcoming Four Seasons Yachts.

Princess Cruises ships ranked by size from biggest to smallest — the complete list

Gene Sloan

Are you looking for the most venue-packed, resort-like Princess Cruises ships at sea? If so, you'll want to get on one of the biggest Princess cruise ships.

The biggest Princess cruise ships are, by their very nature, the Princess ships with the most onboard restaurants, bars and showrooms, as well as the most sprawling decktop pool and lounge areas. The biggest Princess ships have the biggest casinos and spas among ships in the Princess fleet and the most cabins and suites — as well as the most variation in cabin and suite types.

With room for 4,000 passengers or more, the biggest Princess ships are truly large resorts of the sort you find at the biggest vacation destination on land. If you're in the "bigger is better" camp when it comes to a resort experience, these are the Princess ships for you.

For more cruise news, guides and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

Still, Princess doesn't just operate large vessels. The Los Angeles-based cruise giant — the fifth largest cruise line in the world — also has several relatively small cruise ships in its fleet that carry just 2,000 or 3,000 people and have a more intimate feel. In some cases, these vessels are nearly 50% smaller than the size of Princess Cruises' biggest ships. These smaller ships, notably, have less deck-top pool space and fewer interior venues than the biggest Princess cruise ships. However, with fewer people on board, that's not necessarily a bad thing.

The smallest Princess cruise ships are best for vacationers who like a more intimate, less crowded resort experience.

What is the biggest Princess cruise ship?

The biggest Princess cruise ship is the 4,300-passenger Sun Princess , which is also the line's newest vessel. It just debuted in February.

Sun Princess is the first vessel in Princess Cruises' new Sphere Class of ships, which have been designed to be much bigger and more venue-packed than the vessels in the line's last new series of ships, the Royal Class.

Sun Princess measures 177,882 gross tons, which is about 22% bigger than the biggest ship in the Royal Class (the 145,000-ton Discovery Princess). Royal Class ships range in size from 142,229 to 145,000 gross tons.

Note that gross tons is a size measurement referring to interior space, not weight.

A second ship in the Sphere Class series, Star Princess, is under construction at a shipyard in Italy and will debut in October 2025 .

For more details on Sun Princess, including what venues are on board and what it's like to sail on the vessel, see TPG's comprehensive first look at Sun Princess after an early sailing.

What is the smallest Princess cruise ship?

The smallest Princess cruise ship is the 2,000-passenger Coral Princess. Measuring just 91,267 gross tons, it's about 36% smaller than Discovery Princess, making it a significantly smaller vessel.

Coral Princess dates to 2002, a time when cruise ships were built far smaller than they are today and with far fewer venues. At 21 years old, it's also one of the two oldest vessels in the Princess fleet and will probably be phased out sometime in the next decade.

Related: The ultimate guide to Princess Cruises

While significantly smaller than the newest Princess ships, Coral Princess still has many of the signature spaces and venues found on new Princess vessels, including an Italian eatery called Sabatini's and a steakhouse.

Entertainment venues on Coral Princess include a relatively large main theater for production shows, a secondary lounge that offers comedy shows and other entertainment, and a casino. Like other Princess ships, the top deck of the vessel is mostly devoted to pool areas with hot tubs and lounge chairs. There's also a spa.

While smaller and older than the typical Princess ship, Coral Princess has a loyal following among Princess fans who prefer smaller and more intimate ships.

Are bigger Princess cruise ships coming?

It's not clear yet. Princess currently has one new ship on order, Star Princess. But the final size of Star Princess won't be known until the vessel debuts in late 2025.

Star Princess will be the second vessel in the new Sphere Class of ships at Princess. It's likely to be very similar in size to the first vessel in the series, the new Sun Princess. But it's not uncommon for each new vessel in a series to be slightly bigger than the one before.

Star Princess is currently under construction at the Fincantieri shipyard near Monfalcone, Italy.

Note that this isn't the first time Princess has named a ship Sun Princess or Star Princess. Both are recycled names from past Princess ships. Princess operated smaller vessels under the Sun Princess and Star Princess names up until 2020.

What's the difference between bigger and smaller Princess ships?

The biggest Princess cruise ships have room for more onboard venues and attractions than smaller Princess ships. That makes them more alluring for vacationers who prefer a big resort experience with lots of options as compared to a stay at a smaller resort.

On the biggest Princess vessels, the Sphere Class and Royal Class vessels, you'll find the largest piazza-like central atriums in the Princess fleet surrounded by lots of bars and restaurants; multiple entertainment venues for live shows, comedy acts and more; and expansive pool decks with more space for sunning than you'll find on smaller Princess vessels.

You'll also find some only-on-the-Royal-class-ships extras, including, on some of the Royal Class ships, a glass-floored "SeaWalk" that extends over the side of the vessel.

Related: The 5 best destinations you can visit on a Princess ship

Princess' smaller cruise ships also are generally its older cruise ships and lack some of the above features, which are more typical of newer ships. These smaller Princess ships have a more intimate feel, at least in the pantheon of relatively big, mass-market ships, and they hold fewer people.

While Sphere Class and Royal Class ships can hold more than 4,500 passengers with every berth full, the line's smaller vessels (particularly the relatively small Island Princess and Coral Princess) often sail with just 2,000 or so passengers on board.

That makes the smaller Princess ships a good choice for someone who wants to try Princess but isn't eager to travel with huge crowds. The smallest ships in the Princess fleet thus appeal to a subset of Princess fans who prefer more intimacy in a cruise vessel and don't mind giving up some onboard amenities to get it. They are also often less expensive to sail on, on a per-day basis.

Related: Don't miss out on these Princess loyalty perks

In addition, because of their size, the smallest ships at Princess Cruises are able to operate itineraries to places that aren't as easy for big ships to visit. Not all ports in the world can handle a ship the size of Sun Princess.
