Add these colors to your look to stay on-trend and stylish going into fall golf season

/content/dam/images/golfdigest/products/2023/9/18/20230918-Fall-Colors-Promo.jpg

In the past, golf has always felt like it's a step behind the fashion world with top trends trickling onto the course slowly (if even at all). But as more fashion-focused brands get into golf and more golf brands work with more fashion-minded designers, the gap is closing and thus creating a more stylish game. Case in point, we noticed three color trends in fashion this fall that we hoped would show up in golf apparel collections—and were pleasantly surprised to see these colors show up in several recently-released fall collections. The three colors—cherry red, icy blue and neutral gray—are nearly opposites on the color spectrum to give golfers a range of choices for how to express themselves on the course during fall golf rounds and events. All three are also surprising versatile and able to match with golf's classic color palette of navy and black. So if you're looking to add a little extra style to your fall golf looks, here are our favorite men's and women's apparel items, accessories and golf shoes in each color to try out.

More From Golf

Bright red is not an unfamiliar shade in the golf world, Tiger Woods made Sunday Red an essential golf color. Cemented and proved during his first Masters win in 1997, Woods stole the show with a 12-stroke lead and a bold red Nike pullover. On a material level, the casual sweatshirt was unassuming. But that kicky firetruck-red hue said it all: I’m here to dominate this game. Nay, this sport. In fashion, we’ve seen burgundy have its moment, but for 2023, a more tomato-y red is the color poised to shine this fall. The bold color has more benefits than just giving you a more stylish, Woods-inspired wardrobe for fall, it’s also a color than can give you more energy and power on the course.

Multiple studies have shown that people wearing red dominate—especially in the context of a sporting event. One study that spanned the course of 60 years looked at the results of the best 68 English teams dating back to 1946. The results? Teams whose uniforms featured dramatic reds won more often.

According to fashion psychologist Dr. Dawnn Karen, a professor at the Fashion Institute of Technology, red is associated with high energy and power.

“On a biological level, we’re stimulated by red,” Karen said. “The perceiver and the wearer.”

This is because, as Karen confirmed, wearing red boosts the confidence of the wearer, the subtle results of which can make all the difference when it comes to performance. Red, simply put, is also striking and intimidating, possessing the ability to throw off other players as well.

Unlike the dramatic cobalts and stark navy’s so often classic palettes in our golf wardrobes, icy blue manages to be both subtle and bold, the perfect balance if you’re looking for a golf look that’s classy, stylish, and just a hint of intimidating (for those tournaments or foursomes that require a bit extra gamesmanship). Alone, as seen in Lululemon’s techy long-sleeve, the color is crisp and bright, ready to enliven any khaki trousers or white skort in your repertoire. And when used to achieve a color-blocking effect, as seen in Nike’s Tour Repel jacket, teal and lagoon are grounded by icy blue’s earthy cerulean—a perfect compliment to the forests and greens of the course in autumn.

Refresh your closet with these upscale takes on classic golf shorts, polos, and trousers—all monochrome, perfect for pairing with any white or sand-hued clothes you already reach for.

The classic hue is having a moment. This season, say goodbye to the charcoal and matte grays of the grunge 90s and hello to the bright, crisp, tailored grays of contemporary golf wear. The stylish color is clean-cut and formal, thanks to modern silhouettes as seen in, for example, Peter Millar’s tailored puffer or the sleek cuts of the Adidas Samba golf shoe. An all-gray outfit (or, “groufit,” if you will) makes for an on-trend, but not too overt, course look. And if you prefer a more understated uniform, match any of these neutral pieces with your current staples (or any items throughout this list) for a versatile, timeless rendition.

Steam gray gives a soft edge to this techy mock-neck, trim-fitted jacket, and feather soft sweatshirt and quarter zip perfect for throwing on when the wind picks up so you can focus on yoru game.

Keweenaw Peninsula Fall Color Tour

There is one place in all of Michigan where the colors are so vibrant and the views so majestic it will take your breath away. The Keweenaw Peninsula is that place in the heart of the Copper Country. Thousands of people each year feel the pull to this destination to behold the beauty of what awaits the traveler. How many shades of orange and reds can there possibly be in God’s country?

tour course color

Fall Colors in Houghton and Hancock

The Keweenaw color tour is a loop around the Peninsula showcasing some of the best views in all of Michigan. Starting in Houghton the visitor can view the colors that sweep across the two cities. There is no bad view from either side of the valley. The Portage lift bridge anchors your eye as colors engulf Michigan Tech University and frame in Mount Ripley.

Falls Colors at Hungarian Falls

From here head a short distance to Hubbell to see the colors in a magnificent waterfall backdrop. The Hungarian Falls is a short hike with three falls.  The lower falls give a breathtaking view of the falls but also looks out to Torch Lake and the colors of the valley below.  The middle falls are a remarkable photo gallery of fall colors with the powerful drop of the falls which you can get up close to.  The upper falls are no less beautiful and a little bit more a hike through woods where the smell of fall is thick upon the air.

Falls Colors in Gay MI

The next destination is Gay, MI for a stop at the Gay Bar and Restaurant for lunch.  The drive will take you through some historic mining history just outside of Hubbell and between Lake Linden.  These eerie buildings and structures are great places to see how the fall colors can transport them into artwork.  Along the way let the glimmering waters of Torch Lake be a great canvas to showcase colors on the opposite side of the lake.

Fall Colors in Lac La Belle

After leaving Gay, MI you make first contact with Lake Superior while driving along the shorelines of the Keweenaw.  There are plenty of roadside parks and pull-offs to get amazing photos of colors alongside Lake Superior.  Entering into the picturesque town of Lac La Belle the colors up and down Mount Bohemia are breathtaking.  There are plenty of hiking opportunities to the top of the mountain for glorious views. However, a popular destination to stop in is Bear Bluff which is perhaps of the best spots in all of the Keweenaw to see the colors alongside Lake Superior.

Fall Colors in Copper Harbor

The next destination is Copper Harbor. The drive to Copper Harbor is worth all the tour.  Driving between the town of Delaware and Copper Harbor are the famously covered roads.  You will literally feel like you are driving in a “Color Tunnel”.  Your heart will fall in love with this drive and you will remember this stretch of miles forever.  Once in Copper Harbor, you may want to pursue the many stores and restaurants in the city, stop in at the Keweenaw Mountain Lodge, or check out the harbor.  However, the must stop at this destination is the drive-up Brockway Mountain.  This is the epicenter of the entire trip.  There are 360-degree views of the Keweenaw, Lake Superior, and on a clear day Isle Royale.

Fall Colors in Eagle Harbor and Eagle River

The next two stops will bring you down the west side of the Peninsula.  The features of this side of the shoreline are much rougher and rugged as compared to the east side.  There are plenty of pull-offs and little places to fall in love with.  The towns of Eagle Harbor and Eagle River are all postcard-worthy with colors that embrace the vibrancy of the color season.

Which Set of Tees Should You Play From on the Golf Course?

Several Methods Work Well for Determining Appropriate Yardage for Your Game

Brent Kelley is an award-winning sports journalist and golf expert with over 30 years in print and online journalism.

Every golf course you visit is likely to have multiple sets of tees boxes, as designated by colored markers on the teeing grounds at the start of each hole. Most golf courses have at least three sets of tees—the forward tees, middle tees and back (or championship) tees. Other courses might have as many as five, six or seven sets of tees. How do you know which set of tees to use?

The different tee boxes correspond to different yardages, which also means different playing abilities. The tees at the back of the tee box are the longest set, the ones at the front the shortest set (you can find the yardages by checking the corresponding lines on the scorecard—blue tees are designated on the scorecard by the "Blue" line, and so on).

Over time, knowing which set of tees to use will become self-evident. If you are struggling from one set of tees—unable to reach par-3 holes from the tee, or unable to reach par-4 holes in two shots—then move up to an easier (shorter) set of tees.

Don't Play Tees That are Too Long for Your Game

Many amateur golfers (especially men) try to play from tees that are too long. It's not uncommon to see a group of guys on a teeing ground hitting from the championship tees, only to hit weak slices into the woods. Don't be one of these people. There's no shame in playing from a forward set of tees if that is appropriate for your game. And golfers who play from tees that are too long for their games are only slowing down the pace of play.

Three Tee Boxes = Easy Choice

At a golf course with three sets of tees, the guidelines for choosing the correct set are pretty easy:

  • The championship tees (back tees) are for low-handicap men.
  • The middle tees are for middle to high handicap men, low-handicap or long-hitting women, and low-handicap or long-hitting senior men.
  • The forward tees are for middle or high handicap women and seniors, and beginners of all stripes.

How to Choose Yardage to Play From When There are Many Tee Boxes

At courses whose tee boxes contain more than three sets of tees, it gets a little more complicated. But we can sort it out by considering the yardages that the professionals play from.

On the PGA Tour, the average golf course length these days is around 7,200-7,300 yards. On the LPGA Tour, average golf course length is around 6,200 to 6,600 yards. On the Champions Tour for over-50 pros, average golf course length is around 6,500 to 6,800 yards.

If you are a low-handicap golfer, then feel free to play from the set of tees that mimics the yardages on the pro tours (which will be the back tees for men).

Low-handicap women and seniors might choose the set of tees whose yardage is 250-500 yards less than the averages of the LPGA and Champions tours, respectively.

Mid-handicappers might choose the set of tees whose yardage is around 500-1,000 yards less than the pro tour that represents their gender or age.

High-handicappers should consider the set of tees whose yardage is 1,000 to 1,500 yards less than the pros play.

And beginners? Unless you know that you can hit the ball a good distance with at least a little bit of accuracy and consistency, then start from the forward tees. After a round or two from the forward tees, you'll have a pretty good idea (based on your score and your frustration level) if you should move back to a longer, tougher set of tees.

And always remember that first rule of thumb we mentioned: If you are unable to reach the par-3 holes in one shot (we're talking distance, not actually getting your ball on the green), or unable to reach the par-4 holes in two shots from the set of tees you are playing, it's a good sign that you need to move up to a shorter set of tees.

Another Method: Use Average 5-Iron Distance

Here's another general guideline for choosing the distance at which to play a golf course: Take your average 5-iron distance (be honest!), multiply by 36, and choose the tees that most closely match that yardage. Example: You hit your 5-iron 150 yards. So 150 times 36 equals 5,400. Choose the tees closest to 5,400 yards in length. If you hit your 5-iron 180 yards, then look for tees around 6,500 yards (180 times 36 equals 6,480).

PGA of America/USGA Recommendations for Choosing Proper Tee Box

In 2011, the PGA of America and USGA issued a set of recommendations designed to encourage golfers to play from appropriate yardages. These guidelines are based on golfers' average driving distance. So find your driving distance, then see what yardage these two organizations recommend:

There are a few good reasons why the “Michigan color tour” is a thing. Every year, families head out to local parks or hit the road to experience autumn in all its glory. Mother Nature strikes foliage with her paintbrush to prompt beautiful hues and breathtaking views.

These color schemes typically peak mid- to late-October in southeast Michigan, but in 2023, some hot spots will be ablaze with fall hues as early as late-September. Check Pure Michigan’s “Fall for Michigan” updates  for the latest.

In the meantime, here are some great spots, near and a little far, to plan your own fall activities in Michigan. Don’t miss out on those vibrant shades!

Looking for more family fall activities? Check out our list of the best  corn mazes ,  u-pick apple orchards  and  haunted houses  in metro Detroit and beyond.

If you started at Belle Isle, why stop? On Pure Michigan’s site, you’ll find tips for pretty leaf spotting while driving north. There are also some mills and orchards along the way that may require masks at all indoor locations.

Flint-Brighton-Bloomfield Hills (Drive)

Along this 150-mile loop, be sure to circle through Cranbrook in Bloomfield Hills, a historic landmark with gorgeous grounds (and attractions like an art museum and science center). Beyond fall-prime cider mills and orchards, swing by other beautiful parks including  Seven Lakes State Park  in Holly,  Ortonville Recreation Area , and  For-Mar Nature Preserve and Arboretum  near Flint — and even more in Brighton, Commerce Township and White Lake. Hidden Lake Gardens

  • Address:   6214 Monroe Road, Tipton
  • Costs: $10/adult, $5/students K-12, free/4 and under

This 755-acre arboretum and grounds are nestled between the Irish Hills, offering fall activities in Michigan’s southern edge. Owned by Michigan State University, it’s comprised of a 500-specimen conifer garden, lush forests and manicured rolling hills. You’ll want to remain outside as the buildings and restrooms are closed during this phase of reopening. Outdoors, the deciduous trees erupt in red and gold classic hues, primarily courtesy of sassafras trees, but the trees with needles range from silver and blue to tawny gold.

Highland Recreation Area

  • Address:   5200 Highland Road, White Lake

This 5,900-acre park is one of the hottest spots to plot a Michigan color tour in Oakland County; in fact, almost every variety of tree that can be found in Michigan is thriving here. Take your pick of tamarack, cedar and beech-maple, oak-hickory and mixed hardwood forests. Other than day-use areas for picnics and volleyball and the occasional boardwalk over marshes, the area’s largely untouched. There are capacity restrictions in some areas and in buildings where you may have to wait for availability.

Hines Drive (Northville-Plymouth-Westland-Livonia-Dearborn Heights-Dearborn)

Drive this route, which is old M-14, that runs along the Rouge River from Northville all the way down and over to Dearborn. It’s lined with trees great for viewing the fall colors. You might decide to bike or walk portions, too, as there are various trails throughout. Find more information about the  Hines Park Trail here . Plus, there’s a whole list of  different attractions for your family to visit along or near Hines Drive , including the Nankin Mills interpretive center in Westland. For a downriver Michigan color tour, follow the path along the Detroit River to watch freighters and see foliage erupting with color on the Grosse Ile, Celeron and Sugar islands. Benches and picnic tables dot scenic spaces along the river. Venture into the woods on the 1.6-mile paved trail or bring a kayak to float on the wetlands.

Lake St. Clair Metropark

  • Address:   31300 Metropolitan Parkway, Harrison Township

One mile of shoreline and a 1,600-foot boardwalk lead you on a lovely Michigan color tour over the water. These 938 acres are a haven for boaters and inlanders alike. Maybury State Park

  • Address: 49601 Eight Mile Road, Northville

  • Cost:  Free

Both native and exotic trees thrive in the artisan gardens that compose the University of Michigan’s arboretum. Peek at natural areas, trails, streams, ponds and display gardens, plus native oaks, walnuts, hickories and dogwoods to witness glistering golds, radiant reds and inky purples.

Oakwoods Metropark

  • Address:   32911 Willow Road, New Boston

One of the more popular Metroparks for color tours, this park has New England asters, goldenrod and more in bloom weeks prior to fall-foliage peaks of color, offering a striking canvas of color on the ground floor. When temps really begin to drop, the lanky birches and towering oaks and maples’ leaves begin to turn. Fall activities in Michigan here are easy to find on a 15-mile paved trail linking this park to Willow and Lower Huron Metroparks.

Paint Creek Trail

  • Address:   400 Sixth St., Rochester  (City of Rochester Municipal Offices; park starts behind this building.)

This 8.9-mile paved trail connects Rochester, Rochester Hills, Oakland Township, Orion Township and Lake Orion and lures 100,000-plus walkers and bikers — Michigan fall color tourists included — each year. Admire oaks, hickories, maples and more. Check businesses along the route in advance for changes in hours and availability before you go.

Pere Marquette Rail Trail

  • Address:  Seven staging areas; runs from near Main Street and Eastman Avenue in downtown Midland to near US-27 and US-10 in Clare (30 total miles)

Bikers begin at the Tridge in Midland. Peddle a bit, or go all 30 miles northwest to Clare via the asphalt path that parallels the former railroad corridor for a full Michigan color tour. The relatively flat route lets bikers admire forests bright with scarlet sumac over rolling fields.

Pinckney Recreation Area

  • Address:   8555 Silver Hill Road, Route 1, Pinckney

This recreational paradise sports 11,000 acres and 70 miles of hiking trails. Its remoteness emulates a real backcountry Michigan color tour. Step back to take in the colorful tree line where the woods break around boardwalks over marshes. Hit the trails for a closer look at the white, red and black oaks and hickories.

River Bends Park

  • Address:   5700 22 Mile Road, Shelby Township
  • Cost:  Free

A Macomb County gem, divided by Clinton River, this park is home to some beautiful trees. Find mighty eastern cottonwoods, at least five types of maple trees, and more. This wild forest escape has about five total miles of trails, plus loads of fall activities in Michigan style, like a disc-golf course, bike trails, hiking trails — and nearby, find  Yates Cider Mill  (off of Dequindre).

Saginaw-Bay City-Bad Axe-Frankenmuth (Drive)

Driving through the farm fields that make up the heart of Michigan’s thumb allow visitors to see striking tree lines for miles. Pure Michigan’s site maps out a 230-mile loop prime for a Michigan color tour on wheels – a good half flirting with Lake Huron’s shoreline. Why not start in Frankenmuth? Discover piles of side-trek stops too, from parks and farms to lighthouses and corn mazes.

Stony Creek Metropark

  • Address:   4300 Main Park Road, Shelby Township

Another park that offers “up north” vibes without trekking outside the suburbs, Stony Creek boasts a 500-acre lake for kayakers and canoers, plus a total of 4,435 acres spreading across both Oakland and Macomb counties. Take a hike or bike ride to see the tons of color on your Michigan color tour. Picnic areas feature reservable shelters and grills for families to make a day of their leaf peeping.

Waterloo Recreation Area

  • Address:   16345 McClure Road, Chelsea

This state park is the mitten’s largest at more than 20,000 acres of lakes, topography and 47 miles of hiking trails — along which you’ll spot russet red and blazing orange foliage. Bonfire pits, picnic tables and benches dot more open areas of the park to further your options for fall activities in Michigan; don’t miss the Gerald E. Eddy Discovery Center, which is open but with reduced hours.

Wolcott Mill Metropark

  • Address:   65775 Wolcott Road, Ray Township

Wolcott is home to trees more than a century old that delight Michigan color tour enthusiasts who come in autumn to admire crimson reds, glistening yellows and burnt oranges. The Mother Earth Trail near the gristmill takes visitors to an old dam, where you can watch the tree’s reflected foliage dance on the water. Nestled between the north branch of the Clinton River and a working farm, spot colorful tree lines for miles from the road and shore, or stick to the in-park trails to get a better look at nature’s masterpieces.

Fall spans a multitude of seasons. Imagine warm Indian summer days with brilliantly colored leaves against an azure sky mirrored in the stillness of a quiet inland lake. The crisp air invigorates. It’s time to relax and enjoy life. Plan a leisurely color tour; the drive along US-2 is rated one of the top ten color tours in the nation by USA Today.

November is a brisk bridge between fall color and the winter snows. An occasional snowfall and stark, bare-limbed trees set the perfect stage for hunting.

Fish, hike, hunt, browse our shops. Special fall accommodation rates are available throughout the St. Ignace area.

PLEASE NOTE: Our Fall Color Tours are not paid tours or tied to specific dates. These “tours” are thoughtfully curated routes designed to help you experience the breathtaking fall foliage of the Upper Peninsula at your own pace.

Violet Fall Color Tour

Route Highlights

The Violet Color Tour begins in the charming town of St. Ignace and takes you on an unforgettable adventure:

  • Start: St. Ignace
  • US2 along Lake Michigan: Enjoy picturesque views of Lake Michigan and sandy dune beaches.
  • 117 North near Engadine: Head north and experience the deep mulberry and wine-dark fall foliage.

What You Will See

As you start your journey on US2, you’ll be treated to breathtaking vistas of Lake Michigan and its sandy dune beaches. Be sure to cross the magnificent Cut River Bridge, an engineering marvel that spans the Cut River Valley 147 feet below. The route takes you through forests, over rivers, and along the Hiawatha National Forest.

The Science Behind the Colors

Ever wondered where the violet and red hues of autumn leaves come from? It’s all thanks to anthocyanin, the same chemical that gives color to cranberries, strawberries, and plums. The bright summer light prompts leaves to produce more anthocyanin, resulting in the vibrant autumn colors you’ll witness. Common trees like dogwood, sugar maple, red oak, white oak, red osier, and red ash in northern Michigan are known for their rich burgundy hues.

Seven million acres of tree coverage, the pristine shores of three Great Lakes, picturesque historic lighthouses, mirror-calm inland lakes, tree-lined rivers and streams and roaring waterfalls make the U.P. a fall getaway no other U.S. destination can match.

When to see the best fall color

The leaf show begins when our daylight hours get shorter and the night air grows crisp in mid-September. First, there’s a splatter painting of scarlet reds and sunny yellows amid acres of green. Then, almost overnight, the hardwood forests explode in reds, oranges, yellows, purples, browns and greens. The colors intensify and peak by mid-October. But this breathtaking show continues for a couple more weeks, especially along tree-canopied roads near the shorelines of Lakes Huron, Michigan and Superior.

Drive these top 10 fall color tours

Below are 10 of our favorite fall color routes across the U.P. (nearly 1,500 gorgeous, leafy miles). Hop in your vehicle, and prepare to stop repeatedly to take photos. The views get more spectacular with every turn.

Tour 1 | Tour 2 | Tour 3 | Tour 4 | Tour 5 | Tour 6 | Tour 7 | Tour 8 | Tour 9 | Tour 10

Tour 1: Keweenaw Peninsula

Western U.P. | 100 Miles | Fill a full day with stops

The Keweenaw Peninsula is an incredible destination all four seasons but it is positively WOW! during the fall. The foliage will take your breath away.

Start your tour in Houghton/Hancock. Home to Michigan Tech University, these two towns have a college vibe with a choice of eating and drinking establishments, outdoor recreation and lodgings. Crossing the Portage Lake lift bridge marks the beginning of your Copper Country adventure.

Follow US-41 north to historic Calumet, once the center of the booming copper mining industry. Take in the Victorian-era architecture, and stop by the Calumet Theater , a National Historic Landmark. While downtown, go to the Keweenaw National Historical Park visitor center to learn the location of over 20 heritage sites that tell the stories of the men and women who came to mine copper in this northernmost Michigan peninsula.

Continue north on US-41, taking time to stop at Eagle River Falls and Eagle Harbor Light Station and Museum Complex . The next stretch east on M-26 to Copper Harbor is one of the most scenic in Michigan. Winding up Brockway Mountain Drive brings you to some of the most photographed fall vistas in the U.P. If you can spend the night, this area offers some of the best stargazing, including the Keweenaw Dark Sky Park .

From there, make your way south on US-41, stopping for a Delaware Copper Mine Tour . Then, enjoy lots of fall colors as you wind your way to the pristine beach at Bete Grise you will arrive in 11 minutes). Take Lac La Belle Road east then make a slight right on Bete De Gris Road. After time at the beach, make your way south along the Keweenaw Bay coast following Bete De Grise Road. Take a sharp left and follow Gay-Lac La Belle Road to Gay. From there, follow Traprock Valley Road west, turn right onto Bootjack Road, then left on Calumet St. Hop on M-26 at Lake Linden and enjoy the scenery as you return to Hancock/Houghton for a restful overnight stay.

Tour 2: Porcupine Mountains

Western U.P. | 225 miles | 4.5 hours minimum

Houghton is your launch point for this popular fall tour. Head southeast on US-41 to Baraga County . If you treasure fall color, a side trip east of Baraga will take you to Point Abbaye. Follow US-41 east to L’Anse then north on Skanee Road to Townline Road. Locals will tell you that this drive up the Abbaye Peninsula rivals any “leaf peeping” drive in the nation.

Return to Baraga and make your way west on M-38 to Ontonagon County . It is home to Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park — the Midwest’s “last great wilderness.” It’s 60,000 acres of gorgeous vistas of Lake Superior’s stunning shores, roaring waterfalls, miles of rivers and streams, 35,000 acres of untamed old-growth forests and 90 miles of hiking/backpacking trails. If you can’t stay for more than a day, visit at least one of these three lookouts — Lake of the Clouds, Copper Peak and Summit Peak.

From the Porcupine Mountains, go south along CR-519. See Manabezho , Manido and Nawadaha Falls on the far west of the Porcupine Mountains near Wakefield Township. Go east from Wakefield on M-28 to Bergland on the northern tip of Lake Gogebic , the largest natural inland lake in the Upper Peninsula. If you can arrive at Bruce Crossings at nightfall, you can decide if the ghostly Paulding Mystery Ligh t is real or legend. If you prefer to complete this tour in daylight, take M-45 to see Rockland’s Victoria Hydroelectric Dam , the Old Victoria Restoration or  Minesota Mine . From there, go north on M-26, jogging west on M-38 to Greenland to visit Adventure Mining Company , where you can take an easy walking tour, rappel down a shaft or sign up for a drilling and blasting workshop. Return to M-26, enjoying the foliage in the Baraga State Forest and arriving in time for dinner and resting for tomorrow’s adventures in Houghton.

Tour 3: Iron Country

Western U.P. | 221 Miles | 4 hours minimum

Start at Ironwood, at the far west of the Upper Peninsula. If the weather is coolish, stop by the Stormy Kromer factory for a free tour and pick up a cap and other Stormy, stay-warm U.P. gear. Then head east on US-2 to Bessemer. If you have time, extend your tour by going north on the National Black River Scenic Byway Waterfall Tour . This will be a highlight of your Western U.P. travels. Along the approximately 14-mile Black River Road, you can see five impressive waterfalls: the Great Conglomerate Falls , Gorge Falls , the barrier-free Potawatomi Falls , Sandstone Falls ’ rock formations and Rainbow Falls . This byway will also take you to Copper Peak for an incredible, 360-degree leaf-viewing experience.

If a waterfall trip doesn’t work into your schedule, continue east on US-2 to Watersmeet. Four miles west of Watersmeet, explore the Ottawa National Forest’s Sylvania Wilderness on CR-535. The old-growth forests and 34 named, pristine lakes are home to a wide variety of animal and plant life. Return to US-2, and go east to Watersmeet jogging north on M-45 to see Bond Falls then backtracking to Watersmeet.

When you reach US-2, continue east to Iron River. Hikers and ORVers both claim the best way to see fall color is on Iron County ’s hundreds of miles of trails. Nearby Caspian is home to the Iron County Historical Museum . This is the U.P.’s largest local museum with over 100 iron mining and logging exhibits, 26 buildings, two art galleries and a gift shop. Return to US-2, taking it to Crystal Falls where you will head north on US-141 to Covington, then west on M-28 to Bruce Crossings, then Bergland at the northern tip of scenic Lake Gogebic . Take M-28 southwest to Wakefield then follow US-2 west. You will be back in Ironwood in less than a half hour.

Tour 4: Marquette

Central U.P. | 177 miles | 3.5 hours minimum

A good basecamp for this tour is Marquette with its vibrant downtown, dining, entertainment and recreational choices and a variety of lodgings. Start your adventure following Deutsch St. northwest for a half hour along the Lake Superior coastline to Big Bay. Nearby, the 9 miles of Big Bay Pathway trails and Big Pup Creek Falls give you close-up views of autumn’s magnificence.

Return to the junction of US-41 and go southwest to Negaunee and Ishpeming, where you can catch lunch or a craft beer. Mountain bikers can see fall colors from an exciting singletrack RAMBA trail between the two cities. For a less strenuous leaf-viewing experience, visit Black River Falls when you’re in Ishpeming.

From Ishpeming, go east on BUS M-28, taking several small jogs until you reach County Road 480 then south on M-533 to Gwinn. From there, go east on M-94 through Chatham and within minutes, you will enter the Hiawatha National Forest for your fall color feast. Turn right to follow M-28E/M-94E to Shingleton. Once in Shingleton, turn around and take M-28W/M-94W. Take M-28W into Munising, your gateway to the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore.

Some of Munising’s fall color highlights include Pictured Rocks Boat Cruises until mid-October, Miner’s Castle and seeing the 16 waterfalls in Alger County . For an unforgettable wilderness adventure, take the ferry to Grand Island (it runs until Oct. 10) and go hiking, mountain biking and kayaking surrounded by jaw-dropping beauty.

On your return trip from Munising to Marquette, prepare to see some of the most stunning Lake Superior scenery going west along the coast on M-28.

Tour 5: Wild River & Lake Michigan Bays

Central U.P. | 127 miles | 2.5 hours minimum

Start this fall adventure in Iron Mountain by making your way to Pine Mountain Ski Jump , where you can take in some of the best fall vistas in the U.P. At the base of the ski jump is the free Upper Peninsula Veterans Memorial . If you have the stamina, walk up the 500 Pine Mountain Steps . This half-mile vertical climb is the largest outdoor staircase in the U.S. It brings you to the ski jump — the largest artificially made ski slide in our country, too.

From Iron Mountain, take US-2 east to Norway, then go south on M-8 to Piers Gorge Road and park. There is a 1.5-mile trail that offers spectacular views of the Menominee River , its churning rapids, ledges and waterfalls.

Return to US-2 and go east to Hermansville where you can get out of your vehicle and immerse in the colorful woods. The Hermansville to Escanaba multi-purpose rail trail traverses 25 miles. Choose how far you want to go hiking, mountain biking, horseback or ATV riding. Highlights along the trail are three bridges with photo-worthy overlooks.

Go back to US-2 and take it east to Spalding. Turn south on US-41 and go to Menominee, a historic town on Lake Michigan’s Green Bay at the Michigan/Wisconsin border. Catch lunch, then go north on M-35 along Lake Michigan to Escanaba. On the way, you will pass through Escanaba River State Forest where you can enjoy plenty of leaf viewing. Once in Escanaba, stay a day or two and enjoy these local fall color tours .

Tour 6: Lake Michigan

Central & Eastern U.P. | 144 miles | 2.5 hours minimum

Some fantastic pull-offs along this Lake Michigan coastal tour will bring you back again and again. In Escanaba, pick up some Swedish Pantry Bakery cardamon bread and to-go coffee or tea, a bag of Sayklly’s chocolates or Dobber’s pasties for the road. Then take US-41 north to Rapid River on US-2. Visit Rapid River Knifework s, and learn about the craftsmanship of their sports and kitchen knives.

Continue east on US-2. At Garden Corners, take M-183S to Fayette to explore an iron-smelting boom town turned ghost town, Fayette Historic State Park & Townsite . You can easily spend a half-day here walking the 3.5 miles of scenic trails through hardwood forests, along the bluff and the townsite. Kayakers will enjoy Snail Shell Harbor and its scenic limestone bluffs.

Another don’t-miss side trip is visiting the “Big Spring,” Kitch-iti-kipi in Palms Book State Park north of Manistique. Nicknamed the “Mirror of Heaven'' by the Ojibwe, Michigan’s largest natural spring reflects its surroundings on crystal-clear waters. It takes approximately 16 minutes to go west on County Highway 442, north on County Road 455 and then north on M-149.

Return to US-2, and continue east to Epoufette and the Cut River Bridge/Roadside Park . The scarlet red, amber and brilliant orange leaves are only rivaled by the Lake Michigan waterfront.

Just when you think you can’t be awed anymore, US-2 will take you to St. Ignace, the second-oldest, continuously inhabited city in Michigan. Steeped in Native American and European history, this is a good stopover destination. But what will amaze you is the Mackinac Bridge that spans 5 miles over the Straits of Mackinac connecting the Upper and Lower Peninsulas. You must stay to see the sunset and the bridge gleaming with lights at night.

Tour 7: Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore/Seney National Wildlife Refuge

Central U.P. | 160 miles | 3 hours minimum

Fall Color Tour 4 gives you a taste of how spectacular the scenery is along Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore , but take this tour for the full-blown experience. Motorcyclists rank County Road H-58, from Munising to Grand Marais, one of the top rides in the country. In the fall, it is off-the-charts beautiful whatever vehicle you are driving.

From Munising, take County Road H-58 to E. Munising Ave. Continue on Adams Trail to County Road H-58E/Au Sable Trail. Go north to Sullivan’s Landing on the shores of Lake Superior. For the next few miles, take time to visit the picturesque Au Sable Light Station , the Log Slide Overlook and the Grand Sable Lake Scenic Overlook .

Once you arrive at the quaint village of Grand Marais, enjoy the shops, hunt for agates on the beaches and walk the Sunset Boardwalk. A unique attraction is the Pickle Barrel House Museum , a 16-foot-tall barrel that was once a summer home for a well-known illustrator, William Donahey, creator of the famous Teenie Weenie characters. In the fall, it is open on weekends in September or by appointment.

From Grand Marais, go south on M-77 to Seney. If you are up to more wilderness sightseeing, continue south on M-77 to Germfask’s Seney National Wildlife Refuge . You will find many places to hike and paddle, but the Strangmoor Bog National Landmark is part of the Superior Birding Trail. This time of year, you are likely to see American Bitterns, Northern Saw-whet Owls and Blackburnian Warblers among many other migratory birds as you meander through.

Complete the tour by returning to Seney, taking M-28 west to M-94 and north to Munising. If you want to end your day stargazing or seeing the Northern Lights, the mile-long Miners Beach on Lake Superior, off County Road H-28 near Shingleton, is one of the top picks.

Tour 8: Tahquamenon Falls/Whitefish Point

Central and Eastern U.P. | 172 miles | 3.5 hours minimum

This is a tour where the scenery gets better with every turn. Plan to add extra time for frequent photography stops!

Start the adventure in Grand Marais and take M-77 south to Seney. If you haven’t seen the Seney National Wildlife Refuge , continue south to Germfask to hike, paddle and watch for wildlife . From Seney, take M-28 east, then north on County Road 405 to Newberry.

If you have the time, take the six-and-a-half-hour Tahquamenon Falls Train and River Boat Tour from nearby Soo Junction. The boat captain will talk to you about points of interest few people can see from their vehicles. You can also hike to a private viewing area to see the mighty Tahquamenon Upper Falls, one of the largest falls east of the Mississippi River.

From Newberry, continue the fall color tour, driving northeast on M-123 through Newberry State Forest and the Tahquamenon Falls State Forest to Paradise. There you can visit the Tahquamenon Falls State Park to see the Upper and Lower Falls. For another only-in-the-UP experience, stop by for a craft brew and a snack or meal at the Tahquamenon Falls Brewery and Pub at Camp 33 , the only brewery housed on Michigan state land.

From Paradise, continue north on Whitefish Point Road to Whitefish Point . This is one of the premier places to see hundreds of varieties of migrating birds following their ancient flight paths south in the fall. It’s also the site of the Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum with its emotionally powerful exhibits, light station, lightkeeper’s quarters and rock-strewn beach. Open until Oct. 31, you will leave with a deeper respect for Lake Superior and those who have sailed it.

Make your way back to Paradise, then south on M-123 to County Road 407 and north to Deer Park. Then take Deer Park Road west until it becomes County Road H-58. Pull over often to catch the Lake Superior views.

Tour 9: Whitefish Bay

Eastern U.P. | 81 miles | 1.5 hours minimum

This is one of our shortest fall color tours, but there are lots of staggeringly beautiful trees in the Hiawatha National Forest and along the Lake Superior shoreline to enjoy. Begin in Paradise and go south on M-123, then left on M-28 and left on M-221. Stop in Brimley or Bay Mills Point to take in the ever-changing landscape of Lake Superior. Brimley State Park has an observation platform to watch the passing freighters going and returning from the Soo Locks in Sault Ste. Marie. You also can see Canada from there.

After a jaunt up to Bay Mills Point, turn right onto West Lakeshore, travel 19 miles along Whitefish Bay then another 9.4 miles on Lake Superior Shoreline Road to the M-123 junction, and drive north to Paradise.

Tour 10: Lake Huron to Sault Ste. Marie

Eastern U.P. |168 miles | 3.5 hours minimum

When people cross the Mackinac Bridge from Michigan’s Lower Peninsula to the Upper Peninsula, they feel a sense of freedom and carefree adventure. This tour brings out the explorer in you! Start in St. Ignace at the base of the 5-mile-long suspension bridge, and continue north on I-75 to historic Sault Ste. Marie , the oldest city in Michigan and one of the oldest in the United States. Be sure to visit the Soo Locks , the ultimate international and Great Lakes freighter-watching destination. This is also a good place to catch a meal or ice cream snack, visit shops and historic museums, and get outside and play on recreational trails.

Continue the tour, leaving Sault Ste. Marie by going south on M-129, then left on M-48E to DeTour Village on the St. Marys River. While in the village, stop by the DeTour Passage Historical Museum and Maritime Park . Learn about the area’s rich maritime history, and get front-row-seat views of giant freighters.

If you can extend your visit, catch a ferry across to Drummond Island , the second-largest island in the Great Lakes. This island is an adventure waiting for you to join in on the fun. It is renowned for its ORV trails, kayaking, hiking, golfing and peaceful relaxation amid the changing trees.

As you continue your fall color tour, take M-134 west from DeTour Village to I-75 along the northern shores of Lake Superior. Stop frequently at the beaches, and catch a meal in Cedarville or Hessel. Paddling around the Les Cheneaux Islands , an archipelago of 36 small islands, is a fall treat — especially at sunset. Both Hessel and Cedarville are replete with shops and art galleries featuring a variety of locally made crafts and gifts!

When you reach I-75, go south to St. Ignace. Stay over. There are lots of things to do in this historic town tomorrow.

Where to stay to take in the U.P.’s brilliant forests

Throughout the U.P., you can find lodgings, resorts and campgrounds with the rates and amenities that fit your fall color tour plans. September to mid-October are popular times to visit, so to get the dates you want, book your stay ahead. We can’t wait to share this beautiful peninsula with you soon!

Color analysis is a personalized approach to determining which colors harmonize best with your natural features, such as skin tone, hair color, and eye color. The goal is to identify a tailored color palette that enhances your appearance, making you look your best and feel more confident in your clothing and overall style choices.

In Your Color Style, our color analysis process is 3 simple steps.

Love For Your Color Style

I would like to let you know how much I admire and appreciate your devotion to helping women look their best through knowing their color palette and how to use it for their benefit.  Your fine art background and enthusiasm for looking at color theory with fresh eyes truly brings us a unique perspective that eludes many other color analysis systems. Dear Jen, A reason I enjoy your videos and events. In Kindness, Mary B.
I came across Jen’s website some time ago by searching for a color analysis to understand what colors suite me better. As my interest grew to learn how to have fun with different colors in the outfit, I realized that I was going back to Jen’s website quite often to learn more and more and then next thing I noticed, I spent my evening going through her website. Here is what I noticed that was very important to me and I really appreciate people like Jen: the website is full of information that I find very detailed to learn from and available for everyone, amazing newsletters that she puts together very well and very decent prices to pay for some courses to go deeper into the subject; she constantly works on providing us with new tools and exciting, fun videos; her customer service is excellent, she is literally always there to answer emails, she had been assisting me long before I became a member of her club. I love Jen for her generosity, dedication to her work and her customers, a very friendly and reliable person. She has done my color analysis in no time, it was very clear for me and now I can go on making my wardrobe fun and unique! So excited and inspired to buy the right colors and save money!!! Thank you, Jen, very much for being so passionate about your work! I am your fan! Jana Sedlak
Since joining the Colorful U membership, I have learned so much about what to wear, how to wear it, and what colours to wear… and the ‘why’ behind it. Through the Facebook group, I enjoy interacting with others who are equally inspired to look and feel their best everyday. Having my colours done by Jen was a real eye-opener. Before my online analysis, I was positive that I was SOFT and COOL… but it turned out that I am SOFT and WARM. It was well worth the investment to find out my ‘true colours’, so to speak. With this new-found knowledge, I now feel confident to confront my current wardrobe, and I am already shopping with purpose. I am learning how to put together outfits that suit me, and express the way I want to be seen. I always feel connected... I feel that Jen is always nearby and available for chat or questions. I have just began this exciting journey, and learning something new every day, and I am anxious to learn more. I am considering taking one of the available courses.Thank you so much, Jen! Bonnie Carver
I'm absolutely amazed how colors can change my looks. This was very interesting and I agree completely with you in that I'm a deep autumn:) I actually like orange a lot but it doesn't look nearly as good on me as the olive and mustard!! Thank you very much for helping me with this. I feel more confident now and will use this info religiously since it can make such a difference. And why wear colors that only make you look dull when you can wear colors that just lifts the whole impression? There are enough colors for everyone, just pick the right ones! Sabrina
Add customer reviews and testimoniaaI can only speak for my own experience, but I find that YCS is a much better and easier-to-understand system than the 12-season model. I have found that the 'chroma' part is particularly helpful [and isn't thoroughly covered in the 12 season system], especially as my colouring softens with age. I love that YCS is its own checklist when shopping: is the colour [in my case] soft? Cool? Deep? If yes to all, then probably flattering. Genius!ls to showcase your store’s happy customers. Sian

Tour Activity Level

The activity level for this tour:

You’re a leisurely traveler. You typically take it easy and discover the energy of a new place by people-watching or soaking in the atmosphere at a local café. You can climb at least one flight of stairs, board a coach, and walk unassisted at a relaxed pace for up to 60 minutes without difficulty. You can easily handle altitudes up to 5,000 feet.

You like a balanced approach to travel. Walking two to three miles over the course of a day is no problem for you. You can partake in a two-hour leisurely walking tour, covering up to two miles (with included breaks). You can handle a variety of terrains, from cobblestone streets to moderate hills with relative ease and without assistance. You can climb two flights of stairs with ease. There may be 1 to 2 days on this tour when walking tours can cover 3 to 4 miles over uneven terrain. You can handle altitudes up to 6,000 feet.

You’re an on-the-go traveler. You don’t want to miss a thing, so walking and standing for longer periods of time (2-3 hours) isn’t a big deal. A moderately paced two-and-a-half-hour walking tour, covering several miles, hills, and uneven surfaces, is no problem for you. Walking four miles over the course of a day is very doable, as is climbing into and out of various modes of transportation (tuk-tuk, cable car, zodiac, etc.). You can climb three flights of stairs easily and handle altitudes between 6,000 and 9,000 feet. Expect some longer days balanced with free time to recharge or set out on your own adventure. This level is not a fit for travelers who require mobility assistance devices.

You’re ready to seize the day, whatever it may bring. You lead an active life at home (walking, biking, and half or full day hikes are things you may enjoy) and 10,000 steps a day is normal for you. You can handle longer walking tours (more than 3 hours covering 3+ miles at a steady clip) and activities that involve traversing uneven terrain, steep slopes, standing for periods of time, and varying altitudes and temperatures. You don’t mind being on the go with some early starts, late-nights, and full days. You can handle altitudes of 9,000 feet or higher with little to no issue. This level is not appropriate for travelers who use wheelchairs, walkers, and other mobility assistance devices.

6 Best Training Programs And Courses For Tour Guides

Carla Vianna

Your tour guides are the face of your company. They’re the ones interacting with your guests on a day-to-day basis and making sure they’re having the best experience possible.

If you want to provide your guests with excellent service, you might want to consider investing in specialized tour guide training. There are a number of programs to choose from, from beginner courses that teach the basics of guiding to more advanced certifications that fully prepare a guide for every kind of tour.

The travel landscape is constantly changing, and keeping your guides up-to-date on the latest trends will help you better meet your guest’s expectations.

In this post, you’ll learn why investing in additional training for your tour guides is a good idea — plus six unique programs to consider.

Why should you invest in training for your tour guides?

What qualities should a tour guide have.

  • 6 best training programs and courses for tour guides.

1.  TripSchool

  • 2.  International Tour Management Institute

3.  Be a Better Guide

4.  international guide academy.

  • 5.  EastguidesWest

6.  Good Tourism Institute

Tour guide training programs help guides hone in on a number of important skills, including their storytelling capabilities and how to solve problems on a tour. Courses on public speaking and group psychology can feel more confident during their tours. In turn, they’ll provide a better experience.

Courses that introduce guides to real-life scenarios and have them work their way through them can be especially useful for those who have never worked as a guide before.

In other words, these training programs specifically focus on developing the traits that make a “just OK” tour guide great.

Finally, additional training can also make your company more reputable. With a certification or two under their belt, your tour guides can make your company stand out from others in your area.

Remember that an excellent tour guide can leave a lasting impression on your guests and make them want to refer your company to their friends. A bad one can do just the opposite. Don’t you think that’s worth the investment?

An exceptional tour guide is an expert on their destination and the tours they’re leading.

They’re  also charismatic  and know how to connect with guests. The best tour guides love being around people, have superior communication skills, and understand how to read a crowd.

Tour guides should also have great storytelling skills. They should be able to package information into interesting narratives that capture your guests’ attention.

Finally, a great tour guide is always enthusiastic about the experience they’re leading. They know how to get guests excited about your tours and make sure they’re enjoying themselves throughout the whole experience.

6 best training programs and courses for tour guides.

Most training programs today are available online as well as in person. Whether you’re looking for destination-specific training or quick courses your guides can complete on the go, here are six of the best training programs available for tour guides.

TripSchool offers online courses as well as in-person destination training around the U.S. Co-founded by industry veterans Mitch Bach and Alan Armijo, the company is dedicated to helping both tour guides and operators offer travelers the best service possible.

Your guides can take several online courses with TripSchool, including:

  • Local Tour Guide & Experience Certificate:  a complete tour guide training program
  • Multi-Day Tour Director Certificate:  a program that’ll teach guides how to design memorable tour experiences
  • Start Your Own Tour Business:  a step-by-step guide to starting a travel business
  • Storytelling Mastery:  a program to help guides develop their storytelling skills
  • Student Tour Mastery:  a guide to working with students specifically

TripSchool also offers in-person training specific to destinations like San Francisco and New Orleans. There are even experience-based programs like “New England Fall Foliage” and “Southwest National Parks” that are tailored to guides operating in those segments.

2.  International Tour Management Institute

The International Tour Management Institute (ITMI) is a well-known program that provides training from experienced leaders in the tourism industry. The tourism school focuses on hands-on, in-person training, although online courses are also available.

ITMI offers one- to two-week online self-study programs, where tour guides can learn the fundamentals of being a travel leader. There’s also a five-week online group training program that features 10 live classes for local guides.

The tour director coaching and certification program is five weeks long and includes four days of in-person field training. This program allows guides to practice their skills in real life and teaches them how to handle situations that may arise domestically and internationally.

All of the courses also include training in socially responsible and environmentally conscious tourism.

Veteran tour guide Kelsey Tonner started the Be a Better Guide project to connect tour and activity entrepreneurs all over the world.

His Online Tourism Academy features practical training programs for tour guides and operators alike. All courses can be completed online and are also available on mobile. They include:

  • Create Unforgettable Tours:  A step-by-step program teaching guides or operators how to jumpstart their tour business.
  • Scale Your Tour Business:  A program teaching operators how to grow their business.
  • Entertain and Captivate:  Teaches tour guides how to use storytelling to captivate their guests.
  • Inspire Your Staff:  A course dedicated to honing skills like customer service, public speaking, people skills, storytelling, and more.

The academy has a growing community of over 17,000 members from 40+ countries around the world.

The International Guide Academy started in 1973 with courses in Australia, Hong Kong, and London. In 1988, the academy began offering courses in the U.S. The company expanded to Mexico in 2007 and to Canada in 2010.

Local tour guides can participate in both online or in-person courses that teach leadership, research, and public speaking skills. The academy caps its class sizes at 22 students, which allows for more individual attention during and after the program.

The academy also lets tour operators design custom curriculums that meet their company’s specific needs.

5.  EastguidesWest

East guides West offers training and consulting for tour operators and tour guides in unknown, underrated, and under-valued destinations around the world. The program also connects local tour companies and guides to larger, more well-known Western tour operators.

Tour guide training ranges from starter courses touching on everything you need to know to become a guide to more immersive multi-day, in-person programs. Several online courses are also available, including one on tour problem solving and another about keeping guests healthy.

The Good Tourism Institute places an emphasis on sustainable tourism, the goal being to make the tourism industry a better place for businesses and travelers alike.

The company is working on an online course that teaches how to offer unique experiences that benefit your local community. The course will focus on the latest trends in modern-day tourism, strategy development, office management, communication, and online marketing.

If you’re looking for a way to make your company stand out from others in your area, investing in extra tour guide training is the way to go. Each company on this list offers a variety of different training programs that can help your guides offer the best service possible.

UP Fall Color Tour – 2

Wednesday, September 22, 2010 Brimley, Michigan – Wild Bluff Golf Course

During the drive from Grand Marais to Brimley the color change was modest. As we got away from the lake several miles we found leaf color change at about 30 – 40% along Michigan Highway 28. As we returned close to the lake on the Whitefish Bay Scenic Byway it reduced to about 15%. A week or two later the drive along Whitefish Bay would be quite scenic. I noted since the last time we were on this road, the state has added a few scenic rest stops on the lake side of the road where you can stop, have a picnic or even take a swim (in warmer weather !).

Dan and Donna stayed at the Bay Mills Casino Hotel and found their rooms comfortable. They had asked for non-smoking rooms and expected however to continue to smell smoke. Casino patrons are notorious for smoking addiction. But they were pleasantly surprised – once past the lobby and gaming entrance the smell of smoke wasn’t noticeable. Dan had breakfast in the resort cafe and gave it 5 stars. Donna stayed in her room and had yogurt because she thought the cafe might be smokey 🙂 Jo and I stayed at the Casino resort RV Park and were very pleased with it. Had both Wi-Fi and Cable TV. Level pads – gravel not cement. Clean washrooms and showers. Decent price for the amenities. Walking distance to the Casino and Resort.

It was raining  the Tuesday afternoon we arrived and rained during the night. The next morning Dan and I had tee times at 10 am. The rain had stopped by then and the weather was on the cool side but not enough to deter us from golf. While I futzed with my equipment and did a little practice chipping on one of the practice greens, Dan went up to the second floor restaurant and bar to grab a sandwich. Again he gave high marks to the food service and the service in general. Very nice view of the course from the second floor too. As guests of the hotel our fall rate green and cart fee was $52.

Even before we tried out the course we were impressed because the package includes free range balls and new or almost new Yamaha electric golf cart with a large gps screen, a built-in ice cooler, and an onboard ball and club head cleaner. Quite a deluxe machine.

The course is very scenic. Set in the woods with most of the holes are on top of the Bluff, some with scenic views overlooking Lake Superior. The fairways are bent grass and tree-lined with either water or sand bunker fairway hazards. The course presents some dramatic elevation changes; the more level holes had undulating fairways and challenging direction changes. Most greens were elevated and ran fast, with challenging pin locations, and were at times tough to read. We played the White Tees which totaled 6156 yards with a 125 slope rating. The Black Tees total 7056 yards and a slope rating of 136. We found the course fun and quite challenging. You can see more pictures and details about playing the course at our Wild Bluff Golf Course Review on our SuperiorTrails Golfing website.

Thursday, September 23, 2010 Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan & Sault Sainte Marie, Ontario

Rainy weather returned along with colder weather as we headed to Sault Ste. Marie. We found a bit more color when we arrived in town. The two Soo’s are actually on the Saint Marie River as it empties out of Lake Superior so perhaps that explains why Sault Ste. Marie had more color change than Brimley which is only maybe 20 miles west. (See the picture taken on the grounds of Corps of Engineers Soo Locks facility.) We actually had plans to play golf at Sault Ste. Marie Country Club but with the rain the previous days and the rain seeming to go on all day on this day, those plans were cancelled. Did drive by the course and it looks in good shape so playing it will be on our future agenda.

We elected to tour the Soo Looks. Spent time in the Visitor Center looking at all the exhibits and viewing a movie about the history of the area. They post a schedule of expected arrivals of big ships that are going through the locks. So we hung around to watch the Robert S. Pierson go through the locks. Neat experience. Interesting to watch how the seaman handle these huge crafts. Here’s a couple of shots below. If you want to see some more you can go to our Soo Locks web page on SuperiorTrails.com

Later we caught a late lunch at the Antler Bar, a place known for its menagerie of stuffed wild game and hundreds of antlers on the walls and hanging from the ceiling. Also has some pretty unique menu selections. Donna was a little freaked out eating amongst all this wild life 🙂 But it was a fun place, good wait service, and OK on the food side. If you are in town, probably a place you should include to experience the Soo. On the other hand the Soo Locks are something you ought not to miss.

Go Here for Friday, September 24th of our Fall Color Trip

PGA Tour Event Disrupted by Alligator Casually Walking Across Tee Box

  • Author: Madison Williams

The Zurich Classic of New Orleans is used to having a special four-legged friend show up from time. to time on the course.

The guest, an alligator, halted play at the 17th hole during Thursday's first round. The groups of Bronson Burgoon and Jhonattan Vegas, along with Paul Barjon and Samuel Stevens, had to wait at the tee box for the alligator to cross in front of them before they could tee off. The animal didn't stop them from taking a few practice swings, though.

This isn't the first time an alligator has showed up at the Zurich Classic. The PGA Tour commentators reminded viewers that the tournament was used to a three-legged alligator gracing the course fittingly named "Tripod."

Now on the tee, from New Orleans, Louisiana ... A GATOR 🐊 pic.twitter.com/N8wEJh1pQ1 — PGA TOUR (@PGATOUR) April 25, 2024

The alligator walked across the tee box without causing any issues with any golfers or fans. But it definitely took its sweet time to walk across.

Both golfing duos ended up paring the 17th hole despite the distraction.

Narendra Modi in Pune today: 2 lakh people expected to attend PM's mega rally at Race Course Ground | Details

Lok sabha election 2024: prime minister narendra modi is scheduled to hold a mega rally, 'maha vijay sankalp sabha', in maharashtra's pune today..

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to hold a mega rally in Maharashtra's Pune city on Monday, April 29, to support all four Mahayuti candidates. The rally, Maha Vijay Sankalp Sabha, will be held at the Racecourse Ground between 4pm and 9pm.

Lok Sabha election: Prime Minister Narendra Modi to hold mega rally in Maharashtra's Pune today

Pune will vote on May 13 in the fourth phase of the Lok Sabha election 2024 . The counting of votes will be held on June 4.

The Mahayuti leaders, on Friday last week, held a meeting to review preparations for Modi's rally. After the meeting, Maharashtra higher and technical education Chandrakant Patil said, “PM Narendra Modi will hold a rally in Pune on April 29 at Race Course. We are expecting two lakh people for the rally. Party functionaries from Pune, Maval, Baramati and Shirur will be present on April 29. We held a meeting today to review preparations.”

Pm modi's maha vijay sankalp sabha in pune:.

  • PM Narendra Modi will hold the rally in support of four Mahayuti candidates - Murlidhar Mohol of the BJP in Pune, Sunetra Pawar of the NCP in Baramati, Shivajirao Adhalrao Patil of the NCP in Shirur and Shrirang Barne of the Shiv Sena in Maval constituency.
  • According to senior Maharashtra BJP leader Chandrakant Patil, around two lakh people are expected to attend the rally. Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray's son Amit Thackeray will also participate in the rally, Patil said.
  • While Modi will hold the rally and address the crowd in Pune, there are no plans for a roadshow. After the event, he will stay at the Raj Bhavan in Pune, reported news agency PTI.
  • In anticipation of Modi's rally, the Pune Police issued a set of traffic diversions , parking instructions, and regulations for heavy vehicle movement. According to the traffic police, two-way traffic will be facilitated from Paani Taaki to Turf Club Chowk in the racecourse area between 4 pm and 9 pm.
  • Similarly, the road will be closed from Turf Club’s main entrance to Turf Club Chowk. Apart from that, the stretch from Bishop School Circle to Turf Club Chowk will see no vehicular movement during these hours. Police have suggested Mammadevi Junction and Beur Road Junction as alternate routes for the closed roads. The movement of heavy vehicles, including trailers, containers, trucks, and others, has also been restricted within the city.
  • Meanwhile, the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) postponed its scheduled public meeting on April 29 in Pune to April 30 in view of Modi's rally. Uddhav Thackeray and Sharad Pawar will attend the meeting.

Lena, our guide in Moscow was excellent. She was very knowledgable and could answer any question we had for her. We liked that she could pick up on our interests and take us places we might not have thought of to go. When we realized that one of the places we had chosen to see would probably not be that interesting to us, she was able to arrange entry to the Diamond Fund and the Armoury for us. Riding the Metro with Lena was a real adventure and a lot of fun. In Saint Petersburg we found Anna well versed in the history of the Tsars and in the Hermitage collection. Arkady in Veliky Novgorod was a very good guide and answered all of our questions with ease. Novgorod was perhaps a long way to go for a day trip, but we did enjoy it. Vasily was a great driver to have and kept us safe with good humour and skill. We enjoyed ourselves so much, my daughter says she is already planning to return. We would both have no hesistation to recommend ExpresstoRussia to anyone we know.

Just wanted to let you know that My grandson Bruno and I couldn´t have been more pleased with our week in Moscow (6/15 - 6/21). We were absolutely enchanted with the whole experience, including getting lost a couple of times in the Metro during our free time. Although both our guides (both Eleanas) were excellent, I would particularly commend the first one (she took us to the Tatiakov, the KGB tour, and to that beautiful cemetery where so many great Russian artists, authors, composers, musicians, militarists, and politicians are buried). Her knowledge is encyclopedic; and her understanding of today´s Russia as a product of its past was, for us, truly enlightening. I will be taking another tour in Russia, with my wife, within the next two or three years. I will be in touch with you when the time comes. Meanwhile, I will refer you to other potential visitors to Russia as I meet them.

Moscow, a City Like No Other

Moscow is Russia’s largest city with a population of between 12 and 13 million. It is also Europe’s largest city and when you visit Moscow, you can feel it. The layout and architecture of the city is eclectic, ranging from crooked, ancient streets and alleyways to wide, bustling boulevards, from medieval churches to Stalin skyscrapers and to modern, glass buildings towering over everything and of course in the center of it all is the Kremlin and the magnificent Red Square. Moscow is also home to a fantastic, efficient and very beautiful metro system – each station having its own special design. In fact, Express to Russia’s Moscow metro tours and excursions are some of our most popular attractions that we offer. On our Moscow tours, you will see this and more.

Moscow Tours centering on Russian History

Moscow has a long and interesting history and has been the capital of Russia in many of its different iterations – capital of the Grand Duchy of Moscow , the Russian Empire and of course the Soviet Union (who could ever forget the Soviet Union?). Moscow, was founded in the 12th century by Prince Yuri Dolgaruki (Yuri of the long arms – he really did have long arms!). From that time on, it was home to the Russian Tsars until Peter the Great moved the capital to St. Petersburg in 1703. The city has survived invasions and sieges from the Mongols, the Tartars, the Poles, Lithuanians and Napoleon but has always persevered. Our Moscow tours will enlighten you on this great history and give you insights into Muscovites and their unique culture. Our Moscow tours show you what the city is like today but also brings to life the past. Moscow never seems to sleep and is bursting with energy. A Moscow tour with Express to Russia is truly the best way of getting to know Russia’s largest and most vibrant city.

Frequently Asked Questions From Our Travelers

What is the best time to visit moscow.

Any time of year is fine depending on what you plan to do. Summertime is pleasantly warm, ideal for exploring the city and its vibrant atmosphere, but Moscow will be much busier and accommodation is more expensive. Winter can be quite cold but beautiful nonetheless, and this is unproblematic if you intend to spend most of your trip in museums and galleries. There are also various festivals and events organised throughout the year. For more information about the best time to visit, read our guide

How many days are enough in Moscow?

If you plan your itinerary strategically and aren’t averse to a packed schedule, you can cover Moscow’s main sights over a long weekend. Most popular attractions are in the city centre, and the Moscow Metro allows you to cover much ground in a small amount of time. Ensure that your accommodation is fairly central and book tickets in advance, so that you can make the most of your days. For an informative and well-organised day out, check out our Moscow day tours with options to suit all interests.

Do they speak English in Moscow?

As Russia’s capital city, tourists are well accommodated in Moscow. There should be English-speaking staff in restaurants, bars, hotels, shops and attractions in tourist hotspots, and there are also English-speaking tourist police. Transport services have English translations on their maps and English announcements via intercom; alternatively, order taxis from the Yandex Taxi app (Russian Uber), though it’s unlikely that your taxi driver will speak English. If you get stuck and cannot communicate, it’s fine to use Google Translate.

Is it safe to travel to Moscow?

It is no less safe to travel to Moscow than to any European city if you exercise common sense and look after your belongings. As with every city some regions can be more unsavoury than others, but no tourist attractions are located there. The traffic in Moscow is notorious, so exercise caution when crossing roads. Do not take unlicensed taxis; book in advance or take public transport, which is widespread and perfectly safe. If you encounter any problems, look for the special tourist police who can help you. Inside the Field: THE CJ CUP Byron Nelson

Inside the Field

The PGA TOUR returns to Texas after three weeks in the Southeast. TPC Craig Ranch in McKinney, Texas, just north of the Dallas-Fort Worth area, will be hosting for the fourth consecutive season after moving THE CJ CUP Byron Nelson there in 2021. K.H. Lee won the first two editions of the tournament at TPC Craig Ranch only for Jason Day to spoil his attempt at a three-peat in 2023. Jason Day also won the event in 2010 when it was contested at Las Colinas Four Seasons, the same year Jordan Spieth made his PGA TOUR debut at THE CJ CUP Byron Nelson at just 16 years old. TPC Craig Ranch is a par 71 and plays to 7,414 yards.

The PGA TOUR uses a standardized system for determining event fields based on the current season’s Priority Ranking while also including additional exemption and qualifying categories.

Field sizes can vary by event, as can the number of event-specific exemptions. Fully exempt PGA TOUR members are guaranteed entry into all full-field events, with various conditional categories subject to periodic reshuffles based upon FedExCup Points accrued throughout the season. Categories with "reshuffle" notation indicate that a reshuffle period has occurred.

Note: An additional year of eligibility was granted to some categories because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Description

Highlights:.

  • Experience medieval Kitay Gorod (China town).
  • Wander picturesque Red Square and Alexander Garden.
  • Explore grand Christ the Savior Cathedral on our Red Square tour.
  • Breathtaking panoramic views from Patriarch bridge.
  • Enjoy a hearty lunch on the large open verandah and marvel at the stunning views of the Kremlin.
  • Learn about Russian culture from the local through relaxed cultural discussions.

Tour Itinerary:

Red square:.

Russia and Moscow are synonymous with Red Square and the Kremlin and that's hardly surprising as you'll find these places absolutely stunning!

  • - Walk-through the Resurrection Gate and don’t forget to flip a coin so you’ll be sure to come back one day!
  • - Visit the world's famous Kazan Cathedral .
  • - See the State Department Store (GUM), once the Upper Trading Stalls, which were built over a century ago and still operating!
  • - Admire the lovely St. Basil's Cathedral! The French diplomat Marquis de Custine commented that it combined "the scales of a golden fish, the enamelled skin of a serpent, the changeful hues of the lizard, the glossy rose and azure of the pigeon's neck" and wondered at "the men who go to worship God in this box of confectionery work".
  • - Walk by Lobnoye Mesto (literally meaning "Execution Place", or "Place of Skulls"), once Ivan the Terrible's stage for religious ceremonies, speeches, and important events.
  • - Entering the Alexander Garden , you’ll take in spectacular views of Russian architecture from ancient to Soviet times, as well as the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier with an eternal flame. Watch Changing of the Guard Ceremony every hour in summer and every half an hour in winter.

Kitai-gorod:

Stroll along medieval Kitai-gorod with its strong ancient Russia feel, known for its bohemian lifestyle, markets and arts.

  • - Nikolskaya Street. Here you will find the Russia's first publishing house, the second oldest monastery, and Ferryn Pharmacy, known as the number one pharmacy back in Soviet times and famous for its Empire-style architecture.
  • - Ilinka Street. The financial street of the Kitaigorod (China Town) district, where you’ll find the Gostiny Dvor (Merchant’s Yard), which is now a showroom for Ferraris and Maseratis. The street was designed in the 1790s by Catherine the Great.
  • - Varvarka street. The oldest street in Moscow, which dates back to the 14th century, and still has remnants of early Muscovite architecture, such as the Old English Court and the Palace of the Romanov’s.
  • - Kamergersky Lane. Only a small road of about 250 meters, it is home to some of the oldest artifacts of the city, as each building holds a fascinating story. Some of Russia's most famous writers, poets, and composers from as far back as the Golden Age of Russian culture, have lived or worked on this lane.

Historic City Center

Walk the historical old center of Moscow with its cool local vibe, including the main Tverskaya street , and indulge in desserts in the first grocery “Eliseev's store” , housed in an 18th century neoclassical building, famous for its baroque interior and decoration.

From our tour. Impressions of our American tourist:

At 3:30, as energy flagged, lunch was on the agenda at a Ukrainian restaurant.  Just in time!  We asked our guide to order for us.  We all had the same thing....borscht (the Ukrainian version has beans and more tomatoes than the Russian version, which has more beets and includes beef).

The special high bread served is called galushki.  Our main course was golubtsy...a dish of minced meat rolled in braised cabbage leaves.  Both dishes called for optional sour cream as a topping....of course, yes, please....I recommend it.

Full, satisfied, and completely refreshed, it was off to Red Square and St. Basil's and GUM department store.  Red Square is not so named because of the color of the brick walls of the Kremlin.  Rather the word for 'red' and the word for 'beautiful' are similar in pronunciation....and, there you have it.

As we made the turn by the National Museum in front of which is the mounted sculpture of the "Marshall of Victory," Giorgy Zhukov from WWII and caught our first view of St. Basil's, my friend and I simultaneously emitted "Oooohhhhh!"  There it was....the iconic onion domes of St. Basil's!  Hooray....it was open until 7....we had about 30 minutes and were allowed in, AND we could take photos with no flash.

Now, I can give you a taste of what we saw in the other cathedrals in Cathedral Square.  What we learned is that St. Vasily and St. Basil are one in the same....Russian/English.  He was a common man who wandered Moscow unclothed and barefoot.  But, all, even Ivan the Terrible, heeded his opinions derived from his visions.  Ivan had this cathedral built over his tomb.

As we exited and took photos up close of the onion domes, Inna presented us with chocolate (how did she know we were ready for another energy boost, and we each got a big piece of chocolate.  The baby's name pictured on the wrapper of this famous Russian chocolate is Alyonka....the Russian Gerber baby, don't you think?

One could wear out the credit card in GUM's (capitalized because it is actually a government abbreviation), but the 'kitty' and my credit card stayed in my pocket as we strolled through the glass-topped arcade.

We then strolled through some of Moscow's lovely pedestrian streets; paused to listen as a wonderful quartet performed Vivaldi's "Four Seasons" in an underground passage to cross the busy street (hooray!....we DID have our 'classical concert' experience after all; a request Alina tried in vain to fill because none was scheduled those days), saw the Bolshoi, which means 'big' (my friend has yet to recover that their performance schedule did not coincide with our cruise), saw the Central Telegraph Building, dating from the 1930's, and made our way to the Ritz-Carlton to see the night view of Moscow from the rooftop bar, called O2.

There were fleece blankets to wrap yourself in....yes, it got that cold when the sun set.  We each ordered something hot to drink...the ginger, mint, lemon tea served to me in a parfait glass (for 600 rubles...about $9....you pay for the view here!) was delightful and hit the spot perfectly.  It was time to call it a night....
