Box Office Top 20: ‘Star Trek Beyond’ beams up $59.3 million
- Copy Link copied
LOS ANGELES (AP) — “Star Trek Beyond” easily topped the domestic box office in its first weekend in theaters with $59.3 million, but the real winner was “Lights Out,” which cost Warner Bros. $5 million to make and landed in third place with $21.7 million out of the gate, studios said Monday.
“Star Trek Beyond,” the third film in the rebooted series, cost an estimated $185 million to produce. While its debut was healthy, it is over $10 million shy of the second installment’s opening in 2013.
“Ice Age: Collision Course” bombed in its domestic debut with $21.4 million, putting it in fourth place behind “Lights Out,” and the more direct competitor, “The Secret Life of Pets,” which hung in second place with $29.6 million after three weeks in theaters.
Sony’s “Ghostbusters” reboot fell to fifth place with $21 million in its second weekend, bringing its domestic total to $86.3 million.

The 10 Best Quotes in Bad Movies, Ranked
An empire collapses in new 'megalopolis' trailer, the 10 best so-bad-they're-good-musicals, ranked.
Star Trek Beyond won the box office weekend, but it’s a bit of a mixed bag. The third film in the rebooted franchise beamed up an estimated $59.6 million, which isn’t too shabby but falls behind the openings of Star Trek Into Darkness ($70.1 million) and Star Trek ($75.2 million). The film has earned strong reviews and could benefit from word of mouth, but it faces considerable competition in the weeks to come in the form of Jason Bourne and Suicide Squad , so international box office will be key.
Ice Age: Collision Course , meanwhile, completely bombed with $21 million, which is by far the lowest opening for the animated franchise to date. It’s a 55% drop from the previous installment, Ice Age: Continental Drift ($46.6 million), and the lowest opening from an animated studio tentpole in a decade. It’s faring far better overseas with $127 million in its pocked before its domestic release, but in North America at least, this franchise is dead and buried.
In other animation news, Finding Dory racked up over $7 million in its sixth weekend and is now the ninth highest grossing film of all time domestically, knocking The Dark Knight Rises out of the Top 10. Its domestic total is now $460.2 million with a worldwide cumulative of $781.7 million. The Secret Life of Pets , meanwhile, came in second overall in its third weekend with an estimated $29.3 million, bringing its worldwide total to $323.7 million.
Ghostbusters came in third place for the weekend with $21.6 million, dropping a not inconsiderable 53% to bring its worldwide total to $104.9 million after two weekends. But hot on Ghostbusters ’ heels was Warner Bros.’ low-budget horror pic Lights Out , which earned $21.6 million as well against a budget of just under $5 million, making nit a bona fide success.

‘Star Trek Beyond’ beams up a big weekend while ‘Ice Age’ faces extinction
![star trek beyond world box office box office star trek beyond lights out startrekbeyondreview 16](https://www.digitaltrends.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/StarTrekBeyondReview_16.jpg?fit=720%2C720&p=1)
Director Justin Lin’s spin on the rebooted Star Trek universe raked in a respectable (but not fantastic) $59.6 million for its debut, on a rare weekend when five movies all managed to earn at least $20 million. It was only the sixth time such a thing has happened in U.S. theaters, and the first occurrence since May 2015.
As for the weekend’s big winner, Star Trek Beyond ended up with the lowest opening of all three films in the “Kelvin” timeline that began with J.J. Abrams’ 2009 reboot, Star Trek , despite debuting in the highest number of theaters. Beyond earned good reviews from critics and general audiences, though, so pundits are expecting it to have a decent run in theaters when all is said and done.
It was a mixed bag for the weekend’s other two new releases, with the horror film Lights Out enjoying a relatively big, $21.6 million debut, given that the film only cost $4.9 million to make.
The news wasn’t as positive for the animated sequel Ice Age: Collision Course , which appears to be one of the first animated features in quite a while not to do well at the box office — although it did manage to earn quite a bit of cash internationally. Brace yourselves: The five-film franchise that began with 2002’s Ice Age could be nearing extinction, folks.
In its second week in theaters, Paul Feig’s Ghostbusters continued to have a good-but-not-great weekend, tying Lights Out and dropping 53 percent from its opening-weekend ticket sales. Somewhere around 50 percent tends to be the industry average, so Ghostbusters continues to reside in the “wait and see” realm as far as final judgement goes.
The biggest movie opening for the upcoming week is the spy sequel Jason Bourne , which will certainly challenge Star Trek Beyond at the box office. Right now, it feels like the calm before the storm, as Suicide Squad hits theaters the following week and is riding a wave of positive buzz out of Comic-Con.
'Star Trek Beyond' boldly goes to $59.6M at box office
Star Trek Beyond scored a direct photon torpedo hit with audiences, taking $59.6 million in its opening weekend to easily win the box office.
Beyond rode critical success, scoring an 84% positive rating on the review aggregation site RottenTomatoes.com , while introducing Trekkies to the villainous Krall (Idris Elba) and dramatically destroying the USS Enterprise. Audiences gave it an A-minus at CinemaScore .
The third film in the rebooted film franchise landed amid the celebration of the TV series' 50th anniversary.
'Star Trek Beyond' becomes tragic tribute for two
"This opening is a solid debut for a film and a franchise, showing that Star Trek still stands the test of time," says Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst for comScore . "There have been 13 Star Trek films going back to 1979, rivaling James Bond in screen longevity."
The total did reflect a trend of opening weekend drops from the first two rebooted films: Star Trek scored $75.2 million in 2009, while Star Trek Into Darkness took $70.2 million in 2013, according to comScore.
"We've seen diminishing returns in this brand, no question," Dergarabedian says. "But in the context of this summer, Star Trek Beyond is a hit."
Animated monster The Secret Life of Pets scored a strong second place with $29.3 million for a three-week total of $260.7 million.
Third place was a tie at $21.6 million between the rebooted Ghostbusters and the opening weekend of the microbudget horror film Lights Out.
Ghostbusters opened last weekend with a disappointing $46 million and a second-place finish behind The Secret Life of Pets. The Paul Feig-directed film starring all-female Ghostbusters saw a 53% drop this weekend and now has a domestic total of $86.9 million.
"Sony is pitching this as a comedy, but it didn’t hold like a comedy at the box office, which all Paul Feig films have done before,” says Jeff Bock, box office analyst for Exhibitor Relations. “ Ghostbusters is playing more like a blockbuster that wasn’t a blockbuster. The international audience will decide whether this is really going to be another franchise."
With a production budget of $154 million, Ghostbusters has earned $36 million internationally and will continue to roll out around the world through August.
The Mothership: The best and worst of the new 'Ghostbusters'
The overperforming Lights Out already qualifies as a hit, given its thrifty production budget of $5 million. The film scored a 77% approval rating on RottenTomatoes and a B from audiences.
Ice Age: Collision Course landed with a thud in fifth place in its opening weekend. The fifth film in the once-dominant Ice Age animated franchise scored an acorn-sized $21 million against a budget of $105 million.
“North American audiences are pretty tired of the franchise, which showed nothing new here,” Bock says. “But this has everything to do with Secret Life of Pets, which has just been a bulldozer, and also Finding Dory. There’s been too much family animation in rapid succession.”
Just 13% of critics liked Collision Course, while audiences graded it a B-plus.
Final numbers are expected Monday.
