One of the architectural wonders of Rajasthan, City Palace in Udaipur is the largest palace complex of the state. The most popular sightseeing place in Udaipur , City Palace stands magnificently on the eastern banks of Lake Pichola . Flanked by the Aravali mountain range, City Palace is worth admiring for its natural settings that offer a breathtaking view of the surroundings.

History of City Palace Udaipur

The History of City Palace is related to the kingdom of Mewar that has gone through several capital changes during the reign of its many rulers. The capital was first established in Nagda in 568 AD by Guhil, the first Maharana of Mewar. It was later moved to Chittor in the 8th century under the rule of Sisodias.

During 1537, the Mewar kingdom came under the rule of Maharana Udai Singh II. Due to war with the Mughals there was a risk of losing the Chittor fort. Hence, Maharana Udai Singh II chose a new capital for his kingdom near Lake Pichola that shielded the territory from its enemies, well surrounded by forests, lakes and the imposing Aravalli hills.

The construction of City Palace started under the reign of Maharana Udai Singh II and was enhanced subsequently by his successors over a period of 400 years. This palace is of great historical importance as it served as the administrative complex of the Maharanas.

The first royal structure that was built in the City palace complex was 'Rai Angan', the royal courtyard. After the death of Maharana Udai Singh II, his son Maharana Pratap took over Udaipur. During the Battle of Haldighati, Maharana Pratap lost the war to the Mughal emperor Akbar and Udaipur came under the rule of the Mughals.

After Akbar’s death, Mewar was handed over to Maharana Pratap's son and successor Amar Singh I by the Mughal ruler Jahangir. Udaipur once again fell into the attacks of Marathas in the year 1761. To protect Mewar from further attacks, Maharana Bhim Singh signed a treaty with the British in 1818 asking for their protection. After India’s independence, Mewar became a part of democratic India and kings of Mewar retained the ownership of the palaces in Udaipur.

Architecture of City Palace Udaipur

Built in granite and marble, City Palace complex is worth admiring for its perfect blend of Medieval, European and Chinese architecture. The several palaces in the complex stand magnificently behind the 100ft high and 801 ft long facade built exquisitely on the ridge of Lake Pichola.

Located at an elevation of 1,962 ft, the City Palace complex was built by the 22 generations of Sisodia Rajputs over an extensive period of time starting from the year of 1559. Udai Singh II and several other Maharanas have contributed significantly for the construction of this impressive complex. The complex comprises of 11 small palaces and other structures built homogeneously in its design.

The interiors of the palace complex are as commendable as its exteriors. The intricate mirror-work, marble-work, murals, wall paintings, silver-work, inlay-work and colored glass that adorn the balconies, towers and cupolas of the complex are worth admiring.

The terraces in the upper part of the complex offer a breathtaking view of the lake and the surrounding Udaipur city. The palaces in the complex are connected by chowks and the corridors in the palace are built in zigzag manner to evade any surprise attacks from enemies.

The City Palace complex is enriched with many structures that can be reached through the main Tripolia (triple) gate which acts as the entry point to the complex.

Other structures within the complex are the Suraj Gokhda (public address facade), Mor-chowk (Peacock courtyard), Dilkhush Mahal (heart’s delight), Surya Chopar, Sheesh Mahal (Palace of glass and mirrors), Moti Mahal (Palace of Pearls), Krishna Vilas, Shambhu Niwas, Bhim Vilas, Amar Vilas (with a raised garden), Badi Mahal (the big palace), Fateh Prakash Palace and the Shiv Niwas Palace.

The complex also has facilities of a post office, bank and travel agency. There are a number of craft shops and an Indian boutique supported by World Wildlife Fund(WWF) that the tourists can visit on their trip to the palace complex.

The Mewar royal family owns the entire Palace complex and the structures in the complex are maintained by various trusts. The Fateh Prakash Palace and the Shiv Niwas Palace are now transformed into heritage hotels.

The two gates - 'Badi Pol' and ‘Tripola’ are aligned beautifully with eight marble arches or Toranas. According to the legends, the Maharanas used to weigh themselves against gold and silver here, which was later distributed among the local people.

Once through the ‘Tripolia’ gate, an arena near the Toran Pol is encountered where elephant fights were held in the past. These elephants were later chosen for war campaigns according to their prowess. Across Tripolia gate there is another gate known as ‘Elephant gate’ or the ‘Hathi Pol’.

The City Palace Museum, Udaipur is housed within the very iconic, 450 year old Palace, the former abode of the rulers of Mewar. It was formally declared as a Museum open to the public in 1969 through the efforts of Maharana Bhagwat Singh of Mewar (r. 1955-1984 CE). The Mardana Mahal and Zenana Mahal of The City Palace, Udaipur was bequeathed to the Maharana of Mewar Charitable Foundation (MMCF), a trust established by Maharana Bhagwat Singh himself. With it, he also provided a major endowment for the cause. Thus, The City Palace Museum, Udaipur came into being. Fifty years hence; The City Palace Museum has grown immensely and continues to draw visitors in increasing numbers from all across the globe.

Maharana Udai Singh II (r. 1537-1572 CE) realized that he had to look elsewhere, someplace peaceful to establish his capital. After much wandering and deliberation, he came to this area, today known as Udaipur, named after the Maharana, in 1553 CE. The City Palace, Udaipur grew with successive reigns of the Maharanas, most of whom zealously pursued the architectural constructions and expansions of the established Palace Complex.

In 1947, India stood as an independent, democratic nation, free from the British rule. The titles of the royals were abolished and their states were merged into the Union of India. Out of sheer necessity and to maintain these vast, beautiful and historic buildings, most of the rulers had no choice but to convert their private palaces into either Heritage Hotels or into Museums. The Palace at Udaipur too became a Museum called The City Palace Museum, Udaipur.

The royal family of Mewar and its mighty kingdom are believed to have descended from the Sun, Suryavanshis as they are called, tracing lineage from Lord Rama through his elder son Lav. Way prior to Udaipur being selected as the capital, several other flourishing towns served as the capital; Nagda being its oldest. Lying at a distance of twenty kilometres to the north of Udaipur, Nagda (Nagdriha), was proclaimed as capital in 626 CE by Nagaditya (r. 626-646 CE), the fourth ruler of Mewar; it remained likewise up until the early 13th century. At different points of time, the capital shifted to and fro between Nagda and Aghatpur (Ahad).

Rawal Jaitra Singh (r. 1213-53 CE) shifted the capital to Chittor, and constructed the fort wall for the first time. In the 16th century, Chittor faced several invasions; including rulers from Delhi, Malwa and Gujarat who were very ambitious and wanted to acquire Chittor for themselves.

Udaipur City Palace Architecture

The intricate architecture of the City Palace is a subtle mix of medieval, European, and Chinese influences. The main façade has a height of about 244 meters (800 feet) and a width of 30 meters (98 feet). The palace was built entirely out of marble and granite.

The interiors of the palace are lavishly decorated with intricate mirror work, marble work, murals, silverwork, inlay, and colored glass.

There are also elegant balconies, tall towers, and cupolas that add another layer to the structure of the palaces and make for the perfect places to take in a breathtaking view of the city.

Inside, the palaces are built like a maze with labyrinths of long corridors designed to avoid surprise attacks by enemies.

Udaipur City Palace History

The history of the palace is tied to that of the Mewar Kingdom. The kingdom's founder was Guhil, who established the Maharana dominance in the year 568 and was an ancestor of Maharana Uday Singh II who began the construction of the City Palace.

Due to threats to the security of the kingdom from the nearby Mughal Empire, Uday Singh II decided to move the capital of Mewar to a region near Lake Pichola. The city of Udaipur was chosen as the new capital because it was surrounded by forests, lakes, and the Aravalli Hills.

The construction of the City Palace began in the year 1559 and the first structure to be built in the complex was the Rai Angan or the 'King's Porch'. Many changes were made to the palace complex by following rulers over a period of 400 years.

After the independence of India in 1949, the Mewar Kingdom merged into the newly formed democratic nation. The Mewar Kings subsequently lost their special royal privileges and titles. The successive Maharanas, however, retained their ownership of the palaces in Udaipur and converted parts of the palace complex into heritage hotels.

6 Must-see Spots in the Udaipur Palace Complex

City Palace is a marvelous assortment of courtyards, pavilions, terraces, corridors, rooms, and hanging gardens. It is home to many attractions including the City Palace Museum, Tripolia Gate, Ganesh Deori Gate, Badi Mahal, Shiv Niwas Palace, and Fateh Prakash Palace.

1. The Gateways and Torans

City Palace has several gates that are known as 'Pols'. The main entrance to the complex is the Badi Pol which leads to the first courtyard. This is the place where the Maharanas used to weigh gold and silver that was then distributed among the poor.

On the east wall of the courtyard, there are eight ornamental stone arches known as 'torans'. They were constructed by Rana Jagat Singh I between 1628 and 1652. These torans mark the spot where the city rulers gave their weight in gold or silver to the local people on special occasions.

On passing Badi Pol, visitors will come across a triple-arched gate built in 1725 known as Tripolia. After Tripolia, you can also explore the Elephant Gate or the Hathi Pol.

2. Badi Mahal

The Badi Mahal, also known as the Garden Palace, is a large structure located on a natural rock formation which is 27 meters (88 feet) tall. It was built during the reign of Rana Amar Singh II in 1699. Here, guests can take in the 104 intricately carved pillars made out of local marble.

The Fateh Prakash Palace Hotel is the smaller of the two authentic palace hotels in the City Palace complex. This hotel was also built in the early 20th century and was named after Maharana Fateh Prakash who reined over Udaipur during its construction.

Originally, the palace served as an exclusive venue for royal functions, where the Maharanas of Mewar held court. It has now been converted into a hotel with rare items such as authentic crystal chairs, dressing tables, table fountains, and a jewel-studded carpet.

4. Zenana Mahal

An impressive part of the Zenana Mahal or 'Queen's Palace' is the open pavilion called Chowmukha. This is where the Queen used to hold audiences with other royal ladies and ladies-in-waiting of the royal court during special occasions and festivals. Presently, banquets and other celebrations are still held there.

The Chowmukha Pavilion was built by Rana Sangram Singhji II during his reign between 1710 and 1734. The dome on top of the pavilion was added to celebrate the year 2000 and is known as the Millennium Dome.

5. The City Palace Museum

The City Palace Museum has a remarkable collection of ancient sculptures, curios, antiques, and inscriptions of the bygone era.

The museum is divided into a series of palaces, which were built from the 17th to the 20th century. Among the palaces, the Mardana Mahal (palace for the royal men) and the Zenana Mahal (palace for the royal ladies) hold the most significance.

The armory museum displays a vast collection of protective gear and weapons including the fatal two-pronged sword.

The Pratap Gallery is devoted to the legendary warrior Maharana Pratap and his horse Chetak. It displays the original armor and weapons used by the warrior during the great battle of Haldi Ghati in 1576.

The Sculpture Gallery holds 308 sculptures in its collection that were once part of the thriving temples in and around Shree Eklingnath Ji Temple in Kailashpuri.

The Silver Gallery holds a vast collection of silver items previously used by the many generations of the Mewar ruling family. The items here include a crib for newborn babies, a chariot to carry religious idols, and a horse cart.

6. Amar Vilas

The Amar Vilas is an elevated area that contains a wonderful hanging garden decorated with fountains, towers, terraces, and a square marble pool. Built on the highest level of the palace, this was the place where the royals spent their leisure time.

History of City Palace

This palace was built right in the time of establishment of Udaipur city . Over the next 400 years, the palace had been the main site of administration, built and rebuilt by many kings. The region of the palace belonged to Mewar Kingdom during 568 AD. During 16 th century, the kingdom was inherited by Maharana Uday Singh. When his capital city of Chittor was under war, he decided to build a new capital kingdom, closer to Lake Pichola. During the construction, Udai Singh II died and his son took over the construction. However, in the Haldighati Battle, the palace came under the control of Akbar. Later, it went back to the Rajputs and the construction continued until it went back to the hands of British in 19 th century. Even under the British rule, the Rajputs built many structures inside the complex. After independence, the palace complex came under the rule of Indian government.

History of udaipur city palace.

Udaipur City Palace

The Grand Palace came into existence in 1559 when the Mewar king Udai Singh wanted to prevent his defeat in Chittorgarh ( his capital) by the Mughals. He shifted his capital near Lake Pichola, surrounded by Aravali, making it a geographically viable location to protect from enemies and recreate the lost empire.

A loner hermit has advised him to do so!!! The king chooses the same place to build the massive fort as his new capital.

The palace came under the reins of the Mughals and Britishers after defeats, but later on, it was handed over to the Mewar dynasty after independence. Udaipur is still a princely state and has many royal properties under the Mewar Royal family and with various trusts.

Don’t step inside the Palace without knowing its architecture. This city palace is a labyrinth of Chowks, corridors, small courtyards and complexes to defeat surprise attacks from enemies.

An Architectural Guide to The Udaipur City Palace

Architecture Guide Udaipur City Palace

As you enter the city palace you will find the ticket counter at Badi Pol the main gate to City palace

From there you will see a tripled arched gate known as Tripolia gate . The massive entrance is hovered by beautiful balconies and lights welcoming the royal entrance.

In the passage towards Tripolia gate from Badi pol, you will spot the Bhairav site. The foundation of the palace was laid on this site after a holy man met on hills and proposed Maharaja Uday Singh to make his palace there.

The gates are beautifully decorated by Torans, the hanging fringes, that are part of the auspicious marriage ritual of Gujarati and Marwaris.

As you walk through Tripolia Gate, you land in the Big square courtyard of Manek Chowk, from where you can have a view of the area of the City you have walked through. The Toran Pol and Hathi Pol are the two distinctive ornate gates where competition among elephants to exhibit their strength used to be held and the winning elephant use to become the ride of the Maharaja.

As you enter the palace, lord Ganesh’s idol in the glass inlay chamber is the mark of starting any journey with his blessing. Ganesh Deodhi must have been built with the same philosophy.

Moving forward, you will enter Pratap Kaksh, which is also known as Pratap Gallery, which exhibits the heroic icon Maharana Pratap’s story in documented and sculpture format.

Beside this room is Nav Chowki Mahal , a 16-pillar coronation hall of the Sisodia Dynasty .

Moving Ahead, you enter the Chandra Mahal or Moon Palace, named after the Marble basin, which used to be filled with silver coins to be showered over on the public and needy people by the generous kings.

Now you are about to enter the second important part of the Palace Badi Mahal or Big Palace. The highest point of the city palace is beautiful inside by huge pools and fountains. The place allows you to view the city from heights and enjoy the beautiful trees and gardens surrounding it. The place has beautiful carve windows and light coming from colored glass reflects the hues of life in royalty. It is also known as Amar Vilas.

The passage that bridges Badi Mahal to Moti Mahal is called Chitrashali Chowk and is an artistic one. The courtyard has windows cemented with Dutch and Chinese tiles, giving a panoramic view of the city below. It used to be the place to celebrate life with music and dance of the royal era.

You would be stunned with the glittering golden light coming from the Sheesh Mahal or Kanch ki Burj, a popular structure of Dilkhush Mahal close to Badi Mahal. The entry is prohibited, but the glittering lights make their way through closed doors.

The other important structure of Dilkhush Mahal is Krishna Villa. A meditating residence of the princess who committed suicide to stop a war between two kingdoms fighting to woe her for marriage. The walls have paintings from the life of Lord Krishna.

As you move forward, the glittering beams from Moti Mahal will strike you with the vibrant display of colours falling from the coloured glasses. Moving further from here, you will explore places used as the personal residences of rulers.

Bhim Niwas was a structure owned by Maharaja Bhim Singh .

Pritam Niwas was the place for the physically challenged Maharana Gopal Singh . His wheelchair can still be seen in the palace.

Moving forward from the Male dorm to the women’s dorm, you will explore the Manak Mahal space, shining bright like a ruby gemstone. The prestigious hall for a private meeting of the royal company is still fascinating with its glorious history.

The lower level of Manak Mahal has an embossed golden plated sun symbol, which is worshipped daily to start a perfect day.

Voila, here you enter now the magnificent Mor Chowk or Peacock corridor. The royal blue glass work with silver and gemstones carved in beautiful jharokhas or windows and also peacock mosaic is what will be cherry to the pie.

The Zenana Mahal and Laxmi Niwas Chowk are part of a lady’s dorm covered in hues of blue and accessorized, reciting the life of royal princesses and queens. The place has a wide-open garden in the centre, making it a perfect place for parties and meetings.

Adjoining the place is the royal kitchen, which exhibits the utensils used while preparing the lavish feast for maharajas.

You can’t take an exit without sneaking into the Udaipur City Palace Museum and getting a load of the clothes, chariots and palanquins of the royal lifestyle 400 years back.

After your exit, you can sum up the experience as a royal treat to your eyes. You feel part of the legacy!!!!

And when you do, just take it all in – it’s exactly why I can’t stop talking about this place.

Travel Guide for Udaipur: Things to Know Before Planning a Trip to Udaipur

Where’s udaipur.

Udaipur’s this gem in Rajasthan, northwestern India. It’s ringed by lakes, which is why people love to call it the City of Lakes . It’s also called the Venice of the East and It kind of feels like one when you see all the water around.

Udaipur is also called the White City because many of its buildings and the famous City Palace are made from a particular type of white marble.

The city’s packed with history – think palaces that tell tales of old royalty, like the famous City Palace, and gardens that are just a feast for the eyes.

And then you’ve got these intricately carved temples. Plus, the Aravalli Hills are all around you, adding to the charm. It’s like stepping into a royal story, but it’s real, and it’s all set in some seriously pretty nature.

Best Time to Visit Udaipur

lake pichola boating trip to udaipur rajasthan india

Udaipur, like the rest of Rajasthan or North India for that matter, remains super hot during the summer season (March to June) so obviously, it’s not wise to plan a trip to Udaipur during summer.

The monsoon season (July to September) is again not recommended as outdoor activities are not possible at all.

But then the rainy season has its own perks. It’s when the lakes, filled up with water, look captivating, and the Aravalli Range, covered in lush greenery, teems with life.

The winter season (October to February) is a perfect time to visit Udaipur. The weather is pleasantly cool and sunny (mostly) which makes sightseeing less hectic and more fun.

If you plan to visit in December (around Christmas and New Year holidays), make sure to book flights and accommodation well in advance.

How Many Days in Udaipur

Ideally, you’d want to set aside at least two to three days to really soak in the essence of this city.

Say you’ve got a weekend in Udaipur, it’s definitely delightful, but trust me, it’s just a teaser. You’ll get a taste of the city, sure. You cruise on Lake Pichola, catch the sunset, and maybe snap some epic photos. It’s great, but Udaipur deserves more of your time.

If you want to (you must) explore the historic forts, cultural landmarks, and unique temples scattered around Udaipur (there are tons), I recommend at least a week in Udaipur.

The first time we hit Udaipur, we only had two days. Not nearly enough. We were rushing around, trying to see everything, but it was a bit of a blur. We didn’t even get a chance to step outside the city.

The next trip, we wised up and stayed for four days , focusing only on the city, no side trips, no distractions. That’s when I really got to know the place. But, that was part of a bigger Rajasthan trip that lasted two weeks . We saved the places outside Udaipur for the road trip portion, which was a blast and took us all the way to Jodhpur .

The heart of the matter is that Udaipur is not your typical rush-around kind of place. It’s the kind of place where you can take a deep breath, wander around at your own pace, and really get the feel of things. More like a luxury in the busy buzz of India!

How to Get to Udaipur

Udaipur is well-connected by air, rail, and road to the major cities in India.

Located in Dabok , Maharana Pratap Airport serves Udaipur. About 22 km from the city, it’s a domestic airport that receives flights from the major cities in India. The leading airlines that have regular flights to and from Udaipur are Indigo, SpiceJet, Vistara, and Air India.

There’s nothing quite like the freedom a road trip offers. A strong road network links Udaipur to most of the Indian cities.

In cases where the driving distance is more than we can drive in one go, we break our journey at any city en route. Like if you’re driving from Delhi to Udaipur, Jaipur or Ajmer can be chosen for a night halt.

Also, if you don’t want to use your own car, you can hire a car. There are many tour operators that provide cars for rent.

We didn’t want to drive on our own so we chose a chauffeur-driven car for our trip to Rajasthan.

If you’re also touring Rajasthan and exploring the major cities of Rajasthan, it’s wise to hire a car and driver. You not only save time and hassle but also get to explore the off-center attractions or hidden gems.

A strong bus network connects Udaipur to various Indian cities. You can choose from AC coaches or state-run buses depending upon the budget.

The Rajasthan State Road Transport Corporation (RSRTC) buses connect Udaipur with other major cities in Rajasthan.

Udaipur City Railway Station (UDZ) is the nearest railway station. There are direct trains from Delhi (Chetak Express and Mewar Express) Mumbai (Bdts Aii Udz Express), Kolkata (Annanya Express), Jaipur (Udaipur City–Jaipur Intercity-Express), Indore (Udaipur City Express), and Ahmedabad (Adi Udz Express).

How to Get Around Udaipur

Udaipur is a relatively compact city. Auto-Rickshaws, taxis, and local buses (limited) contribute to the public transportation system. The narrow lanes of the old city are best explored on foot as all the attractions are located within walking distance.

If you don’t want to walk, you can opt for an auto-rickshaw. A shared auto-rickshaw comes cheaper but it sticks to the fixed route and stops at the designated (popular) stops. A private auto-rickshaw is a bit pricey but it goes anywhere you name.

For the attractions outside the city like Monsoon Palace, Badi Lake, Chittorgarh Fort, Kumbhalgarh Fort, Ranakpur, Eklingji, and Nathdwara – a taxi is ideal. Uber and Ola are available in Udaipur.

Where to Stay in Udaipur

When in Udaipur, you’d want to stay in the old city for three reasons – firstly, most of the attractions are close by, secondly, you can drink in the views of the iconic Lake Pichola, and lastly, the old city is where the soul of Udaipur lies.

From boutique heritage hotels, and hostels, to guesthouses, and luxury hotels – the old city has all types of properties to suit your budget and style. Make sure you book in advance to score a Lakeview room.

If budget is your concern and you are looking for a hotel that offers value for money, we recommend Jagat Niwas Palace and Amet Haveli.

Located on the eastern banks of Lake Pichola, Jagat Niwas Palace is a favorite among travelers for its perfect location, courteous staff, A1 service, and good food.

Located on the northwestern bank of Lake Pichola, Amet Haveli is highly rated for its services, cleanliness, location, staff, and facilities. The hotel is best known for Ambrai Restaurant, one of the best fine-dining restaurants in Udaipur. It’s where you can have delicious food with an amazing view of Lake Pichola.

If you don’t mind splurging and are looking for sheer luxury, your options are – Taj Fateh Prakash Palace , Shiv Niwas Palace Hotel , The Leela Palace , The Oberoi Udaivilas , and the Taj Lake Palace Hotel . If you ask me to suggest to you the best among all, floating right in the center of Lake Pichola, the Taj Lake Palace Hotel is a class apart. Exquisite is the word!

What and Where to Eat and Drink in Udaipur

Like most of the cities in Rajasthan, Udaipur is a great place to try Rajasthani specialties like Laal Maas, Gatte ki Sabzi, Dal Bati Churma, Ker Sangri, Chakki ki Sabzi, Ghevar, Mirchi Bada, Pyaaj Kachori, Samosa, and Chaat.

Udaipur’s charm lies in rooftop lake-view restaurants and cafes. More than food, what matters here is the view you get.

From Sheesh Mahal , Upré , Ambrai , Tribute , Khamma Ghani , Charcoal by Carlsson , Jagat Niwas Palace , Restaurant Harigarh , Chandani by the Oberoi Udaivilas , Jharokha by Lake Palace Hotel , Paantya by Shiv Niwas Palace , and TWG by Hemang are quite a few amazing fine dining restaurants that offer food with a view.

lake pichola view from the restaurant at jagat niwas travel guide for udaipur

All of these restaurants (except TWG Hemang which primarily serves international cuisine) offer International as well as Rajasthani cuisine.

Jheel’s Ginger Coffee Bar & Bakery , a cafe perched over Lake Pichola is where you can enjoy some free time with a cup of coffee or chocolate shake.

If you’ve got enough of the views (which is unlikely), you can head to the restaurants that might not offer you the iconic views but are celebrated for various other reasons.

A charming old-world colonial house restored into a restaurant, in 1559 AD , a bistro lounge restaurant, and Royal Repast , a specialty restaurant are great places to dine out. Both these restaurants are highly appreciated for their warm staff, speedy service, and vintage ambiance.

For travelers who want to enjoy a traditional Rajasthani thali – Garden Restaurant , Natraj Dining Hall and Restaurant , Krishna Dal Bati Restro , Padam Thal , Navidya By Amantra Hotels , and Udaipuri .

We also liked Udai Art Café , Brew Villa , Yummy Yoga , and Cafe La Comida . Located right in the heart of the old city, both cafes serve great coffee and snacks.

If you are a health aficionado, Millets of Mewar is for you! The first-ever dedicated health-food restaurant in Udaipur, Millets of Mewar uses locally sourced and organic ingredients. They very well know how to make healthy eating fun and creative. Its menu also includes vegan and gluten-free options.

What to See and Do in Udaipur

There are tons of places in Udaipur, each with its unique charm. First off, the City Palace is a must-see. This colossal structure is steeped in history and grandeur.

Then there’s Lake Pichola. A boat ride there during the golden hours of sunset is just spellbinding.

Don’t miss the Jagdish Temple. Its intricate carvings and serene atmosphere are utterly captivating.

Next up, you can reach Karni Mata Temple by a hearty trek or a swift ropeway ride – the choice is yours, but the breathtaking views are a given either way.

The gardens of Saheliyon-ki-Bari are perfect for a leisurely and peaceful walk.

The Monsoon Palace is your ticket to the best sunset view in town – the city lights up like a jewel.

And if you’re chasing art and culture, the Bhartiya Lok Kala Museum showcases the best local crafts.

And there’s more than just the mainstream attractions.

Find solace at the calm Ambrai Ghat or the tranquil Badi Lake. Pay respects at the Ahar Cenotaphs and soak in the beauty of Fateh Sagar Lake.

And there’s the Neemach Mata Temple – it’s not as crowded and the climb is pretty refreshing. Plus, the view? It’s like you’re watching over Udaipur.

Evenings in Udaipur are for Bagore Ki Haveli. The Dharohar dance show is epic – the dances, the music, the vibe – it’s all real Rajasthan.

And, of course, shopping in Udaipur is an experience in itself. The markets such as Bapu Bazaar, Ghanta Ghar, Hathipol, Malda’s Street, and more are alive with colors, crafts, and endless rows of shops waiting to be discovered.

Let’s not forget Maharana Pratap Samarak. It’s a tribute to a local hero, Maharana Pratap, and you can feel the pride in the air. It’s this outdoor space with a big statue of him and his loyal horse, Chetak, which is pretty awesome to see.

And you must find out some time to visit the Shilpgram Museum, a living arts village that celebrates the traditional crafts and lifestyle of the local folk. A little out of the city, it’s is like a portal into the heart of Rajasthani village life and of course, the best place to immerse in the local culture.

Last but not the least, you can’t miss a trip to Chittorgarh Fort, one of the largest forts in India, and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Standing proud a little way from Udaipur, it’s where the dramatic history of Rajasthan unfolds.

chittorgarh fort

With more time, you can take a few eventful day trips from Udaipur. Just a short drive from the heart of Udaipur, you’ll find Eklingji, an ancient Hindu temple complex that’s a sanctuary of peace and spiritual energy.

A little further, there’s a cozy little town of Nathdwara famous for its temple of Shrinathji. It’s all about timing your visit to catch the temple ceremonies, which is quite the experience with all the singing and hustle.

Haldighati is another important spot near Udaipur. It’s where the iconic battle involving Maharana Pratap took place, and you can almost hear the clash of swords. Nearby, the Maharana Pratap Museum adds layers to the story, offering insights and artifacts that bring the historical saga to life.

And you can’t miss Kumbhalgarh Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It’s this massive fort with a wall you can see for miles. People say it’s like India’s version of the Great Wall of China. The view from up there are simply breathtaking.

19 Best Things to Do in Udaipur, Rajasthan

Regal City of Lakes and Palaces

visit palace udaipur

Udaipur, Rajasthan's "white city", is often called the most romantic city in India because of its famed lakes and palaces. Therefore, it's only natural that they feature prominently in the top things to do in Udaipur. Experiencing Udaipur is all about reliving royalty and appreciating the city's regal beauty.

Check out these places to see around Udaipur too. There are many interesting day trips and side trips to go on. If you don't mind the heat, try and catch Udaipur's biggest festival, Gangaur, in March or April (it happens a couple of weeks after Holi each year). The Mewar Festival is held alongside it and celebrates the region's culture.

Explore the City Palace Complex

Elena Odareeva/Getty Images

How did Rajasthan's royal rulers survive after India became a democracy and their states merged into the Union of India? They converted their palaces into hotels and tourist attractions in order to generate an income. Udaipur's City Palace Complex , belonging to the Mewar royal family, really sets the standard as far as such heritage tourism is concerned. This all-encompassing destination incorporates two authentic palace hotels (see below) and the City Palace Museum . Plus, a collection of vintage cars and Jag Mandir, a pleasure palace on an island in the middle of Lake Pichola. It's the largest palace complex in Rajasthan.

Wander Through Bagore Ki Haveli

Bagore Ki Haveli provides a further fascinating look into the lifestyle of the royal family and culture of the region. This sprawling mansion, built in the 18th century on the edge of Lake Pichola at Gangaur Ghat (where you can sit by the water), was once the residence of the Prime Minister of Mewar. It was converted to a museum after five years of restoration work in the late 1980s and is a joy to wander through. Inside there are more than 100 rooms, courtyards, and terraces, many with beautiful frescoes and fine mirror work. Royal paintings, costumes of the kings, personal items, and traditional Rajasthani arts and crafts are on display. There's also a puppet gallery and turban collection with the world's biggest turban. The Haveli is open daily from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. A folk dance performance and puppet show is held from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Boat on Lake Pichola and Fateh Sagar Lake

Zzvet/Getty Images

Lake Pichola and Fateh Sagar Lake (to the north of Lake Pichola and connected by a canal) are the most popular of Udaipur's man-made lakes. A boat ride on Lake Pichola gives a whole new perspective on the city, especially the City Palace Complex. There are a couple of options, depending on what you want to see and how much you're prepared to spend. To visit Jagmandir Island, you'll need to take one of the boats that depart from Rameshwar Ghat in the City Palace gardens (a small fee is payable to enter the City Palace if you're not staying at a hotel there). Tickets cost 500 rupees per person for the regular boat ride during the day, and 800 rupees per person for the sunset boat ride. Cheaper public boat rides depart from the jetty at Lal Ghat. A lesser-known option is to get a boat from Dudh Talai adjacent to Lake Pichola. You can explore Fateh Sagar Lake by renting a boat from the bottom of Moti Magri (Pearl Hill).

Soak Up the View from a Rooftop

pawopa3336/Getty Images

The numerous rooftop restaurants on Lal Ghat, Gangaur Ghat and Hanuman Ghat provide a fabulous panorama of Lake Pichola. For something special, including a superb view of the the City Palace, head to Upre by 1559 A.D. atop the Lake Pichola Hotel near Hanuman Ghat. On the other side of the lake, Sun and Moon Restaurant on the rooftop of Hotel Udai Niwas at Gangaur Ghat is sought-after for its view. At Lal Ghat, try the rooftop restaurant at Jaiwana Haveli or Jagat Niwas Palace Hotel .

Watch the Sunset at Ambrai Ghat

Udaipur has many vantage points for photography but arguably the best one is Ambrai Ghat, especially at sunset. It's located directly opposite the City Palace and also fronts the Lake Palace hotel, so you have an unsurpassed view of both as their lights are turned on. To get there, head to the Hanuman Ghat area and keep walking along the road that runs parallel to Lake Pichola as far as you can, past the Amet Haveli hotel and Ambrai restaurant. Do be aware that Ambrai Ghat is a popular local hangout for couples. (Of course, locals know the most romantic spot with the best views in the city!)

Visit Jagdish Temple

This imposing white Hindu temple, with intricate architecture and carvings, is an unmissable landmark in the Lal Ghat area near the entrance to the City Palace. It was built by Maharana Jagat Singh in 1961 and houses a black stone idol of Lord Jagannath, an incarnation of Lord Vishnu who's regarded as the preserver of the universe in Hinduism. The highlight here is the evocative aarti (worship ceremony) every sunrise and sunset.

Take a Heritage Walking Tour

TkKurikawa/Getty Images

A heritage walk through the streets of Udaipur is a great way to immerse yourself in the City of Lakes and Palaces. The Walk Down Memory Lane tour conducted by Walk and Pedal is one of the best. You'll get to see goldsmiths at work, witness temple rituals, visit quaint shops selling everything from shoes to books, and enjoy panoramic city views. Also check out the dawn and dusk tours conducted by Vintage Walking Tours . In addition, this insightful Udaipur Heritage Walk offered by Virasat Experiences is recommended for engaging with local artisans. It provides an opportunity to meet communities that make jewelry, pottery, and bamboo craft. You'll learn about local traditions, customs, and beliefs too.

Stay at an Authentic Palace Hotel

Blaine Harrington III/Getty Images

Udaipur's mystical Lake Palace hotel appears to float in the middle of Lake Pichola. It was built by the Maharanas of Mewar as a pleasure palace in the 18th century. The royal family restored and converted it into a palace hotel in 1963, and then leased it out to the luxury Taj hotel group in 1971, as a way to maintain it. A further restoration was undertaken in 2000, making the property one of the finest heritage hotels in India. It has even had a Hollywood moment when scenes from the famous James Bond Octopussy movie were filmed there. The only way to visit the hotel is to stay at it, so splurge and treat yourself to at least one night of indulgence! The Taj group recently took over the management of the Fateh Prakash Palace Hotel , inside the City Palace Complex, too. The other option for an authentic palace stay is the Shiv Niwas Palace Hotel . It also features in Octopussy.

Sample Traditional Mewari Cuisine

RakeshPicholiya/Getty Images

The Rajput rulers of the Mewar region, who founded Udaipur, were avid hunters. Meat-based dishes are therefore a feature of Mewari-cuisine, in contrast to predominantly vegetarian Rajasthani food. Laal maas (red mutton curry) is an iconic Mewari dish that's fiery hot. Apparently, the royal cooks spiced it up to hide the aroma of the game meat that was used at the time. The dish has a prominent place on the menus of restaurants that serve Mewari food in Udaipur including Hari Ghar , Khamma Ghani , Upre , Ambrai , and Paantya at the City Palace. In addition, the Bedla family serve recipes that have been handed down over generations at their heritage restaurant Royal Repast , located in their home.

Take an Indian Cooking Class

Corey O'Hara/Getty Images

Udaipur is a fantastic place to expand your culinary skills by taking an Indian cooking lesson. You'll learn all about the different spices and secrets to preparing Indian food. Sashi's cooking classes are among the most popular. She has a reputation for being a friendly and lively teacher, and she conducts introductory classes twice a day with her son at her place at Gangaur Ghat. Mamta's cooking classes are recommended too. She offers four different menus, ranging from basic to super deluxe. The classes take place for lunch and dinner daily near Chandpole. Alternatively, Sushma provides cooking classes at the Krishna Niwas Guesthouse at Lal Ghat. You can choose the individual dishes you want to prepare. The extensive options include north and south Indian dishes, Rajasthani classics, and desserts.

Get a Dose of Culture and Shop at Shilpgram

Olmoroz/Getty Images

Shilpgram (meaning "craftsmen's village") is a rural arts and crafts complex, located on the outskirts of Udaipur. It was set up by the government in 1986 to showcase rural life and traditions from Rajasthan, Gujarat, Maharashtra, and Goa. The complex has huts from each of the states, incorporating their distinctive architectural features. Artisans also sell their wares and perform folk dances. Horse rides and camel rides are offered as well. The complex really comes alive during the 10-day Shilpgram Arts & Crafts Fair in late December.

Buy Art or Make Your Own

Atlantide Phototravel/Getty Images

Udaipur is renowned for its traditional art, particularly the colorful miniature paintings that originated there in the 16th century. A recommended place to buy them is Gothwal Art near Gangaur Ghat. The lovely owners of this gallery are artists themselves and prices are very reasonable. It's possible to learn the technique by participating in a workshop, such as the ones offered by Vedic Walks . Jal Sanjhi is another rare 200 year-old art form that can be learned in this painting demonstration . It involves painting on water and is a tribute to Lord Krishna. If you're interested in other types of art and handicrafts, this Spirit of Art tour comprises visits to a block printing center and book binding shop, painting demonstration, and sword making demonstration.

Give Some Love to Rescued Street Animals

Animal Aid Unlimited

Animal Aid Unlimited runs one of India's busiest street animal rescue services and hospitals. More than 75,000 animals have been treated there since the organization was founded in 2002. The sanctuary is home to about 150 animals including cows, donkeys, dogs, and cats. It's a happy place that encourages and welcomes visitors. You'll be able to play with and comfort the animals, and receive a whole lot of love back from them. Tours take place throughout the day at the following times: 10.30 a.m., noon, 2.30 p.m., and 3.30 p.m. Volunteer opportunities are also available.

Ride Around Udaipur on a Bicycle

Wade Andrew/Getty Images

Feeling energetic? The Art of Bicycle Trips introduced bicycle tours in Udaipur in 2013 and they've become a popular way of seeing the city. Their three-hour lakeside city loop will take you through the countryside past the major lakes (Pichola, Fateh Sagar and Badi), mountains and small rural hamlets. On the way, you'll be able to spot various birds and animals. The tour runs daily from 7.30 a.m. to 10.30 a.m. and costs 2,000 rupees per person.

See the Cenotaphs of the Royal Family

prill/Getty Images

Off-the-beaten-track yet just east of the city center, the Ahar cenotaphs honor deceased members of the Mewar royal family. There are 372 white marble cenotaphs that have been constructed over centuries at the place where the bodies were cremated. About 20 of them belong to past kings and hold great significance. The site also has a holy step well, and small archeological museum that's dedicated to ancient settlers of the area.

Relax in Udaipur's Regal Garden

Guillaume CHANSON/Getty Images

Continue tracing the heritage of the Mewar royal family at Saheliyon ki Bari (Courtyard of Maidens), which was built by Maharana Sangram Singh -- popularly known as Rana Sanga -- next to Fateh Sagar Lake in the 18th century. This elegant garden served as a recreation space for the royal ladies. It's filled with a lotus ponds, sculptures, marble pavilions, fountains, trees, and more than 100 rose bushes. The impressive cascading rain fountains were added by Maharana Bhupal Singh in the late 19th century and imported from England. These days, the garden attracts many local families, and young canoodling couples who aim to get privacy away from prying eyes.

Admire the View from Monsoon Palace

The Monsoon Palace (also known as Sajjan Garh) can be seen from Udaipur, perched high on a hill above the city. As its name suggests, it was a favored destination of the royal family during the monsoon season. The palace belonged to the Mewar royal family until it was placed in government hands. Despite its dilapidated condition, it's a popular sunset spot due to its unsurpassed view over Udaipur. Those who are familiar with James Bond's Octopussy movie will also recognize the palace as the home of the principal villain, Kamal Khan. The drive to the palace takes around 30 minutes and passes through Sajjan Garh Wildlife Sanctuary Biological Park. Auto rickshaws aren't allowed to enter the park. So, it's best to rent a car or take the special minivan that departs from the entrance to Bagore ki Haveli at 5 p.m. daily.

Get Wild at Sajjangarh Biological Park

Veena Nair/Getty Images

Sajjangarh Biological Park surrounds the Monsoon Palace and can be visited on the way. The main attractions are trekking trails and a zoo. As far as zoos in India go, it's not bad, with spacious enclosures spread over a wide area. Electric golf carts can be rented to see all of it at a cost of 50 rupees per person, or 400 rupees for a private cart. There are about 20 types of animals and reptiles including lions, tigers, leopards, sloth bear, deer, ostrich, porcupines and turtles. The park is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily except Tuesdays. Entry tickets cost 35 rupees per person for Indians and 300 rupees for foreigners. Do be aware that many of the animals sleep during the day, so it's best to visit after 4 p.m. You'll probably want to give it a miss if you don't have children though.

Ride the Mansapurna Karni Mata Ropeway

Nicole Silvestri/Getty Images

Red cable cars ferry sightseers on short trips (five minutes one-way) up the hill from Deen Dayal Park at Dudh Talai to Karni Mata temple . There's a viewing platform there, and it's another notable location for seeing the sunset over the city. Do be aware that the line and waiting time to buy tickets can be lengthy. Tickets cost about 100 rupees, round trip, for adults. There's an option to pay more to skip the line, which is highly recommended.

Due to war with the Mughals, there was a risk of losing the Chittor fort. Hence, Maharana Udai Singh II chose a new capital for his kingdom near Lake Pichola that shielded the territory from its enemies, well surrounded by forests, lakes, and the imposing Aravalli hills.

The construction of City Palace started under the reign of Maharana Udai Singh II and was enhanced subsequently by his successors over 400 years. This palace is of great historical importance as it served as the administrative complex of the Maharanas. The first royal structure that was built in the City palace complex was ‘Rai Angan’, the royal courtyard. After the death of Maharana Udai Singh II, his son Maharana Pratap took over Udaipur. During the Battle of Haldighati, Maharana Pratap lost the war to the Mughal emperor Akbar, and Udaipur came under the rule of the Mughals.

After Akbar’s death, Mewar was handed over to Maharana Pratap’s son and successor Amar Singh I by the Mughal ruler Jahangir. Udaipur once again fell into the attacks of Marathas in the year 1761. To protect Mewar from further attacks, Maharana Bhim Singh signed a treaty with the British in 1818 asking for their protection. After India’s independence, Mewar became a part of democratic India, and kings of Mewar retained the ownership of the palaces in Udaipur.

The City Palace was built concurrently with the establishment of the Udaipur city by Maharana Udai Singh II and his successor Maharanas over the next 400 years. The Maharanas lived and administered their kingdom from this palace, thereby making the palace complex an important historic landmark. The earliest royal structure he built here was the Royal courtyard or ‘Rai Angan’, which was the beginning of the building of the City Palace complex. The court was built at the location where the hermit had advised Maharana to build his new capital.

The Mewar kingdom was flourished initially in Nagda (30 kilometers (19 mi) to the north of Udaipur), established in 568 AD by Guhil, the first Maharana of Mewar. In the 8th century, the capital was moved to Chittor, a hilltop fort from where the Sisodias and Choudhary ruled for 800 years. Maharana Uday Singh II inherited the Mewar kingdom at Chittor in 1537 but by that time there were signs of losing control of the fort in wars with the Mughals. Udai Singh II, therefore, chose the site near Lake Pichola for his new kingdom as the location was well protected on all sides by forests, lakes, and the Aravalli hills. He had chosen this site for his new capital, much before the sacking of Chittor by Emperor Akbar, on the advice of a hermit he had met during one of his hunting expeditions.

After Udai Singh died in 1572, his son Maharana Pratap took the reins of power at Udaipur. However, he was defeated by the Mughal emperor Akbar at the Battle of Haldighati in 1576 and Udaipur fell under the Mughal rule. After the death of Akbar, Mewar was given back to Maharana Pratap’s son and successor Amar Singh I by Jahangir. However, the Mughal army sent many expeditions against the Mewar empire, culminating in a peace treaty between both rulers.

But with the increasing Marathas attacks by 1761, Udaipur and the Mewar state were in dire straits and ruins. By 1818, Maharana Bhim Singh signed a treaty with the British accepting their protection against the other empires. After the Indian independence in 1947, the Mewar Kingdom, along with other princely states of Rajasthan, merged with democratic India, in 1949. The Mewar Kings subsequently also lost their special royal privileges and titles. The successive Maharanas, however, retained their ownership of the palaces in Udaipur and converted parts of the palace complex into heritage hotels.

What is the best time to visit Udaipur?

The best time to visit Udaipur is during the winter months, from September to March . During this period, the weather is mild and perfect for days spent sightseeing. With temperatures ranging from 11°C to 26°C, travellers can make the most of the season with boat rides on Lake Pichola, long walks by Fateh Sagar, days spent exploring the narrow alleyways of the old city and al fresco meals at gorgeous rooftop and waterfront restaurants. The annual Shilpgram Crafts Fair, held during this period, draws visitors with its showcase of art, craft and Mewari culture . This is also the best season for outdoor explorations: walk around the City Palace complex, catch a sunset at Ambrai Ghat, take in the sights from the Jagdish Temple or sign up for a walking tour. Winter is the best season, but it comes with a surge in tourist numbers, and you may find hotel rooms booked out well in advance or with a higher price tag attached.

When is the off season in Udaipur?

During the summer months, from April to June, temperatures soar in Udaipur. This is the low season for tourists, when scorching temperatures can go above 40°C. The intense heat makes outdoor activities challenging, and the dry weather leads to a parched landscape. However, the low season often means discounted hotel stays and flight tickets. Summer may be the low season, but vibrant cultural celebrations like the Gangaur and Mewar festivals, are celebrated enthusiastically in the month of April.

When is the rainy season in Udaipur? The monsoon season, from July to September, brings cooler weather and a revitalised landscape. Though frequent rains may disrupt sightseeing plans, this season brings a certain charm: the lakes are in full spate and the parched earth erupts in green. The 19th-century Sajjangarh Palace, also known as the Monsoon Palace, on the outskirts of Udaipur on a hilltop, is particularly beautiful in this season. Built by Maharana Sajjan Singh, this palace was once envisioned as a celestial sanctuary for star-gazing. Gradually, it evolved into a retreat for monsoon escapes. Though its astronomical dreams were left unfulfilled, the palace remains a captivating landmark on Udaipur's skyline.

How many days are enough for a trip to Udaipur? A three to four day trip allows for enough time to experience the best of Udaipur. Explore the grand City Palace and museum, filled with intricate paintings and rich history. Visit the Ahar Cenotaphs, a collection of over 250 cenotaphs honouring the Maharanas of Mewar. This lively festival blends heralds the arrival of spring with religious ceremonies, captivating Rajasthani folk dances and music performances. Colourful processions wind through the streets, as locals don elaborate attire representing Isar and Gangaur. The festivities culminate at Lake Pichola, where images of Isar and Gangaur are ceremoniously set afloat on beautifully decorated boats.
