A new wave one-stop shop will tour North America this summer when Howard Jones and ABC will be hitting stages across North America with special guest Haircut 100. The full itinerary appears below.

“I’m very excited to be hitting the road with my friends ABC and Haircut 100,” Jones enthused. “Our audiences can look forward to some seriously top tunes night after night!  Bring your celebratory selves to the party.”

Of course, the evening will play out like an evening filled with hits from the early days of MTV, when the so-called “Second British Invasion” dominated the channel. Jones’ hits “New Song” and “What Is Love,” and “Things Can Only Get Better” probably segued into or out of ABC’s “Look of Love,” “Poison Arrow” and “Be Near Me” and Haircut 100’s “Love Plus One” and “Fantastic Day.”

All three acts have gone on to other successes, but this tour brings together the songs and sounds that first brought them to fame.

It’s simply amazing how this man can still do what he does and still be relavent after all these years.I have and will continue to go and see Howard whenever I can, fingers crossed he does at least one more British tour so we can watch and listen in awe to a musical genius who has stood the rest of time and shaped part of my life and I’m sure many others with his music and and overflowing personality and stories along with his showman gigs and sometimes intimate shows. I will never tire of seeing and watching Howard Jones.Thank you for getting to know us well Hojo and long may it continue.

I recently saw Howard Jones in Portland, OR during the US leg of his Transform tour. What a fantastic show! Howard has an excellent stage presence. Whether he was discussing points of his career, encouraging the audience by reiterating the positive ideals in his music, or artfully manipulating a synth while singing with impeccable tone, the audience felt completely enveloped by and a part of Howard's musical aura.

I was a little skeptical that the songs would sound as authentic as they did back in the 80s, but was pleasantly surprised by how clear and original they sounded. Howard encouraged the audience to sing often and loudly, resulting in a very happy and engaged crowd.

The opening bands, All Hail the Silence and Men Without Hats were also excellent. Men Without Hats has such a high level of energy and enthusiasm, it's impossible to be still while listening!

Firstly, I love China Crisis who were the support act. I felt very melancholic listening to them play their greatest hits, especially the song Christian, which is imho one of the most beautiful and original songs from the early 80s synthpop period.

Howard put on an amazing show. The venue (London Palladium) allowed for a more intimate atmosphere between him and us. The venue was clearly filled with superfans (one of whom sang very loudly behind me throughout). I was a great reminiscing session for me, remembering the spikey hair and mohair jumpers of my youth. The new music sounds a bit dated though.

Great concert though!

Boy George and Culture Club, Howard Jones, Berlin romp through '80s classics on summer tour

howard jones on tour

BRISTOW, Va. – Never underestimate the power of nostalgia.

Summer amphitheater tours are frequently packaged affairs stocked with like-minded – and era-specific – bands.

The Letting It Go Show, featuring Boy George and Culture Club , Howard Jones and Berlin, is a gift to fans of ‘80s music, primarily because the artists all still offer potent collections of brain-ingrained hits.

At Jiffy Lube Live amphitheater in Virginia Friday – a couple of weeks into the tour that will wrap Aug. 20 in Concord, California – a generation-spanning crowd patiently awaited the trio of acts after a lengthy lightning delay.

Their reward was a heady package of musical memories.

Here are some highlights from the show, along with the artists’ abbreviated set lists.

Kylie Minogue hits Vegas: The British star is planning a residency in November

Berlin makes the most of a short set

With arms outstretched, Berlin maven Terri Nunn , 62, greeted an effusive audience that was appreciative to see the band, but also thankful the show started after a nearly 90-minute wait.

Unfortunately, Berlin was forced to be especially economical with their set, performing four songs in 20 minutes.

Understanding the time crunch, the five musicians sharing the stage – including founding member John Crawford and ‘80s-era member David Diamond on guitar – immediately tore into the New Wave magnificence of "No More Words" and "The Metro," their cascading synthesizers still evocative and their melodies indelible.

Nunn, sporting trademark black streaks in her white-blond hair, sounded record-perfect  as she soared through the band’s No. 1 hit, the everlasting "Top Gun" ballad, "Take My Breath Away." The diminutive singer, clad in a sleeveless black dress, walked (with a bodyguard) a few rows into the crowd to sing, facing the back portion of the venue and leading fans in swaying their arms overhead.

Longtime followers of the band were undoubtedly thrilled to see Crawford trade lyrics with Nunn on “Sex (I’m A …)” as they stalked each other on stage, bringing more heat to an already steamy night.

Berlin set list

  • “No More Words.”
  • “The Metro.”
  • “Take My Breath Away.”
  • “Sex (I’m A …).”

Howard Jones marks 40 years of ‘New Song’

The genial keyboard wizard started his set with an easy mandate: “We play with total energy and you sing every song,” he said.

Backed by a four-piece band including intriguing bassist/Chapman stick player Nick Beggs, Jones, 68, bopped around several neon-glowing poles stationed around the stage, sometimes leaning over his synthesizer, other times grabbing the mic for an impassioned note.

A revamped piano take on “New Song” included Jones, his upper range in fine form, hitting some long notes seemingly effortlessly. At 40 years old, the song still retains a springy youthfulness.

Personable and gracious during his 30-minute set, Jones tucked away his cheerfulness for his plaintive ballad, “What is Love?,” which he infused with pathos as it escalated into a dramatic wall of sound of keyboards and electric guitar and ended on a literal high note.

Jones wrapped his efficient set with “Things Can Only Get Better,” the audience happily shouting the “whoa, whoa, whoa-oh-o” part of the chorus as Jones smiled his way through the perky bop.

 Howard Jones set list

  • “Like to Get to Know You Well.”
  • “Everlasting Love.”
  • “New Song.”
  • “What is Love?”
  • “Things Can Only Get Better.”

Culture Club gleefully romps through ‘80s classics

Few can make an entrance as gleefully as Boy George and on this night, he and Culture Club opted to start with a song they had been saving for the encore at previous shows – a smoking version of the Rolling Stones’ "Sympathy for the Devil."

"When I die – if I die – I want to be Mick Jagger," he said with the first of many wicked grins flashed throughout the hour-ish set.

Flanked by fellow original Culture Club members Mikey Craig on bass and Roy Hay on guitar and keyboards, Boy George, 62, looked flawlessly glamorous in layers of black and blue fabric, a gray hat tilted on his head.

Culture Club unspooled their realm of hits with layered precision by springing for a four-piece band – including a percussionist and saxophonist – and two impressive backup singers.

Boy George shimmied and gestured his way through "It’s a Miracle," his voice creamy and soulful before teasing "Shall we tumble?"

That led, naturally, into the slinky groove of "I’ll Tumble 4 Ya," followed by a reggae-fied cover of Bread’s "Everything I Own."

Boy George appeared genuinely happy throughout the set, smiling as he skipped around the stage. He led the band through ‘80s time capsules, including "Do You Really Want to Hurt Me?" and the spotlight of the night, "Church of the Poison Mind," which was ingeniously meshed with Wham!’s "I’m Your Man" in a pleasant marriage of cadence and spirit.

The encore included mainstay "Karma Chameleon," but more satisfying were the glistening soul of "Time (Clock of the Heart)" and "Miss Me Blind," given a ‘70s club vibe thanks to Hay scratching out a disco rhythm on guitar.

Culture Club set list

  • “Sympathy for the Devil.”
  • “It’s a Miracle.”
  • “I’ll Tumble 4 Ya.”
  • “Everything I Own.”
  • “Do You Really Want to Hurt Me?”
  • “That’s the Way (I’m Only Trying to Help You).”
  • “Church of the Poison Mind/I’m Your Man.”
  • “Time (“Clock of the Heart”).
  • “Miss Me Blind.”
  • “Karma Chameleon.”
  • “Bang a Gong (Get it On).”

Howard Jones And ABC On Tour!

Howard Jones was one of the defining figures of mid-'80s synth-pop. His music merged the technology-intensive sound of new wave with the cheery optimism of hippies and late-'60s pop. Jones racked up a string of hits in the mid-and late '80s before he retreated into being a cult figure in the '90s. Don't miss the 'What Is Love' singer on tour in 2024, where he'll be co-headlining with the pop band ABC, with Haircut 100 as support!

"I'm very excited to be hitting the road with my friends ABC and Haircut 100," Jones stated. "Our audiences can look forward to some seriously top tunes night after night!  Bring your celebratory selves to the party."

Howard Jones has sold upwards of 10 million albums worldwide and continues to make new music and tour the world. Jones has performed on NBC’s top-rated morning and nighttime shows respectively, Today and The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. His ubiquitous hits can be heard in such high-profile television series and films such as “Stranger Things,” “Breaking Bad,” “Watchmen,” “The Carrie Diaries”, “Superstore” and “Bumblebee”. Howard Jones’ most recent album is DIALOGUE, which was released in September, 2022. DIALOGUE is the third album in a trilogy of electronic releases from Jones with multi-media project ENGAGE coming out in 2015 and studio album TRANSFORM out in 2019. DIALOGUE garnered serious coverage in outlets such as Spin, Stereogum and more.

ABC has enjoyed a glittering career to date. They are one of a number of groups who came along and kick-started the 80s with their own brand of pop for a “new decade”. On its release in May, 1982, their debut album THE LEXICON OF LOVE crashed straight into the UK album charts at number one. Showcasing the soulful voice of lead singer Martin Fry with such hit songs as “Poison Arrow” and “The Look Of Love” and produced by the legendary Trevor Horn, it was voted by many as the best British album of the decade. More hits would follow with subsequent albums including “How To Be A Millionaire,” “Be Near Me” and “When Smokey Sings”. ABC has released nine albums to date and has sold upwards of 20 million albums worldwide; they continue to thrill audiences globally with their live show.

Haircut 100 released PELICAN WEST in 1982 to worldwide acclaim. That cherished LP contained their trademarks "Favourite Shirts (Boy Meets Girl)," "Love Plus One" and "Fantastic Day," all UK top ten singles in the 1982-83 season. Soon they added a fourth, "Nobody's Fool," by which time, PELICAN WEST was already platinum certified in the UK, only three months after release. The album spent 11 consecutive weeks in the British top ten and twice reached No. 2. It also charted in the US, Australia and beyond, after which frontman Nick Heyward left for a distinguished solo career. Heyward’s solo efforts included another top ten title, his debut solo album, NORTH OF A MIRACLE, in a collection of nine LPs in his own name to date.

Hi everyone, I hope you and your families are well. As we hurtle towards another year I wanted to let you know how much I appreciate your enthusiastic support. It has been a busy year with the completion of the box set project making all the 1st five albums available in lovely remastered form. I am very pleased with the way they turned out and I hope you enjoyed some of the rare tracks we were able to include. We managed to take the DIA/HL tour around the world visiting Japan, Australia, the UK, and the US, and it was a blast to play those albums for you. A couple of highlights of the year for me were " The song that changed my life" documentary and the Voices Around the World project

I hope you are able to download my New Year gift to you of 4 tracks that were recorded live for the documentary. https://soundcloud.com/howardjonesmusic/sets/howard-jones-new-year-gift-set

to download the songs to your computer, click on the song title and then select the download arrow under the waveform)

Next year will be the 30th anniversary of the first single release and it seems like a great excuse to do something special again. I'm planning a show or shows for the end of the year which will feature new music and video composed primarily for live performance and a selection of my favourite tracks from the whole hojo canon. In the new music I hope to write specific parts for audience participation and I hope you will feel like joining in the fun of this (parts will go out before the show). We also plan to release a DVD set of all the promo videos to date with remastered audio in the box set format. Who knows what else might happen! Once again thank you for another memorable year! Couldn't have done it without you! Please take good care of yourselves! Happy New Year Love Howard Jones

Organiser Laurie Lewin says “This marks a huge success on a no budget/not-for-profit project so imagine what we could do if we had a budget! The project has clearly brought a lot of enjoyment to schools and produced some high quality singing. The aim has always been ‘to link up the voices of young people around the world through music.’ We want to build on this next year, possibly setting up video conferencing between schools involved, we want to push towards making a documentary about the process from birth of song ...through to the final recording release. We will need funding to expand into these areas and so are actively looking for this in the coming months. Anybody who knows anyone who would like to help sponsor the project, please let us know. Howard has already produced an amazing song for the coming new project for 2013. It’s called ‘Unshakeable’ and we will be letting schools know all about this very soon. Our target will be to make the biggest world youth choir ever and to get as many young people around the world involved as possible.”

This year’s project was the first time that a global recording involving school children on such a large scale had been attempted. “We have learned that young people will produce some amazing work if you give them the chance and raise the expectations for them,” says Laurie. “And we’ve learned all kinds of tricks and techy things that should make the project run even more smoothly next year.”

Schools have already begun signing up for next year, including several IPC member schools. All they need to do is to register their email address on the website www.voicesaround.com

16 November 2012 Howard Jones, working with Roland UK raised £9100 for 'Three Men On a Bike' fund which is being split between Children in Need and Music For All, two very worthwhile causes. Thank you to everyone who bid and we hope the winners enjoyed the shows. http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b008dk4b http://www.musicforall.org.uk/

31st December 2011 Hello All,

I am wishing you an earth shakingly good New Year for 2012. This year has been about getting those box sets sorted...and yes.... there is a new one coming in the New Year including: One to One, Cross That Line, and In the Running, with a couple of extra cd’s of rarities. It feels like with the release of this, the “Warner Years” will be fully brought up to date and the tracks sounding at their pristine best, thanks to the wonderful remastering of Mr Bronnimann. The DVD of the O2 show was completed and I am very happy with the way it turned out. Gigs didn’t really start to get going until June this year and I enjoyed the US touring and some great UK Festivals in Perth and Henley. Gothenborg in Sweden was another highlight and it was great to get the video side of the show working on a touring basis. I have to offer up my highest praise to Jonathan Atkinson for his mega electronic drum contribution to the shows and of course the irreplaceable Robbie B. Thank you for supporting me once again with the re-mastered releases and the new DVD. Thanks to all who turned up to the shows .....they were some of the most enjoyable in my career so far. I really enjoyed hosting and choosing the music for the Absolute80’s radio shows ....I hope you were able to catch them. I hope I will get the chance to do this again sometime. I’m looking forward to the Japanese tour and the 8 date tour of the UK , a trip to South Africa, and another visit to the US. Who knows what else may turn up but I’m sure it will be a blast. As an independent artist I remember that my relationship with you ...my supporters.... is paramount, and I hope you will continue to let your feelings be known about how things are going. I really hope to get some new tunes underway this year. They will probably be of a strictly electronic nature. I feel that live shows will continue to be the way that people engage with my music most, so I will devote a lot of time to developing this. I hope that you will spend another year making your unique contribution to the world we share and working for the happiness of others as well as your precious selves. My deepest respect Howard Jones

ps thanks to those behind the scenes, especially David, Joe, and Glenn

On 3rd September, Howard drew the biggest audience of the 2011 season to the Fremont Street Experience in Las Vegas.

It was in 1983 that Howard Jones first burst upon the contemporary music scene with his very English song-writing and pioneering synthesizers. Anyone who was around in the mid to late eighties will remember those high energy gigs and his first two albums Human’s Lib and Dream into Action. They lived in the higher reaches of the album charts in the UK, USA, Germany, Italy, Sweden, Canada, Australia and many other countries in the 1984-86 period and the hits kept coming....New Song, What is Love? Pearl in the Shell, Hide and Seek,(which he performed at Live Aid in 1985), Like to Get to Know You Well, Look Mama, Things Can only Get Better, Everlasting Love and the quintessential No One is To Blame, which reached No.1 in the US.

Now Howard Jones has re-mastered those first two classic albums ‘Human’s Lib’ and ‘Dream into Action’ and played them both live in their entirety for the first time on November 6th 2010 at the IndigO2 in London’s O2 Arena Complex. This two-album show is being repeated throughout 2011 and 2012 at selected venues. The re-mastered albums and a special re-mastered box set of the 12” mixes were released in March 2011 and a DVD of the IndigO2 concert is now available from www.howardjones.com

A classically trained pianist, Jones applied his technique to the early synths particularly the Roland Juno 60, the Jupiter 8 and the Moog Prodigy. He also pioneered the classic Roland 808 drum machine and the Sequential Pro-One. In the early days he was triggering sequencers live on stage whilst playing and singing, something that no one had done before.

These days he still operates on the cutting edge of today’s technology and has been one of the leading exponents of the Roland Fantom G8 and the Roland V-piano. Many contemporary giants of the dance world have shown interest in working with Howard which has resulted in tracks such as ‘And do you Feel Scared?’ with Eric Prydz and ‘Into the Dark’ with Ferry Corsten.

Jones continues to tour extensively and will be playing multiple dates and festivals in 2012 with Robbie Bronnimann on live sequencing/sampling and effects using Ableton Live and various controllers, and Jonathan Atkinson on electronic drums.

Always one to take chances, Jones continues to write great songs inspired by his Buddhist beliefs as is evident on his latest studio album ‘Ordinary Heroes’ which features a string quartet on every track and one of the best Welsh male voice choirs in the world The Morriston on the song ‘Soon You’ll Go’.

But 2012 will mark the return of one of the true eighties icons and godfathers of modern electronic dance music in full electric mode. If you were too young the first time around it’ll be a chance to find out where all those beats and sounds came from, and if you were around it’ll bring all those memories flooding back. How Rising Stardom Inspired “Things Can Only Get Better” by Howard Jones

by Bryan Reesman July 3, 2024, 8:15 am

Howard Jones was on tour in support of his 1984 debut album Human’s Lib and trying to come up with new songs for what would become his sophomore album Dream into Action . A single that naturally emerged during this period of creativity was “Things Can Only Better,” which would become his second biggest hit in America and fourth biggest in the UK.

Videos by American Songwriter

The track was inspired by Jones’ fast-rising commercial success after his first record came out, but it was excitement tempered by anxiety. He was 29 years old, which was a little older for a hitmaker at that time, and a lot was happening at once after his years of slogging away in pubs and clubs.

Give Us Your Talent

“It was reflected with that [song],” Jones tells American Songwriter . “But I knew that I was in this for the long-term, and I guess I proved that now. This is what I love doing. This is my contribution to the world. I’ve always been trying to encourage people to do that—whatever talent you have, please let us have the benefit of it. Please don’t keep it to yourself, please let us have your great talent, wherever that may be. That’s been a theme that I’ve run through some of my songs, [like] ‘Pearl in the Shell.’”

After a short and moody prelude, “Things Can Only Get Better” breaks into an upbeat, funky, mid-tempo dance number with occasional bursts of brass and a middle break from The TKO Horns, who were then known for their work with Elvis Costello. Singing trio Afrodiziak sang backup during the choruses, and they would also make a guest appearance on the rerecorded version of “No One Is to Blame.” The group also appeared in the video for the song and joined Jones on his 18-month world tour to support Dream into Action .

The rousing chorus for “Things Can Only Get Better” itself was one word, featuring different melodic variations for the word “whoa.” It could almost be consider wordless as the effect was just something that the audience could easily glom onto.

We’re not scared to lose it all Security throw through the wall Future dreams we have to realize A thousand skeptic hands Won’t keep us from the things we plan Unless we’re clinging to the things we prize

And do you feel scared? I do But I won’t stop and falter And if we threw it all away Things can only get better

A Song About Perseverance

On his Human’s Lib Tour, Jones was “loving the fact that people were singing the choruses of the songs that they already knew. So I thought, ‘Oh, yeah, let’s have a whoa, whoa chorus and anybody can join in.’ Then they don’t have to know the words, they can join in. But the rest of the song is my favorite sentiment to get over—don’t be scared to live your life, don’t be scared to lose it, you’ll get back up again. We all feel scared about going forward and trying new things, but don’t stop and falter, don’t worry about it. You’ve got resources in you. You don’t realize it maybe sometimes, but you can overcome these things. And things can only get better if you have that attitude. They will get better if you believe they can. I really wanted to put as much positivity into that song as I could. Because I felt that buzz of performing every night on tour, and people would want to celebrate those kinds of sentiments.”

One could argue that the most emotional part of the song is the pre-chorus in which the lyrical sentiment is appropriately contrasted by a dramatic, slightly melancholy melody that for a moment acknowledges vulnerability and insecurity before returning to the upbeat, one-word chorus.

The song’s overall message resonated with listeners as “Things Can Only Get Better” became Jones’ most successful single. It hit No. 3 in Sweden, No. 5 in the U.S. and Ireland, No. 6 in the UK, and No. 9 in Canada. It also went Top 20 in Australia, Italy, and Belgium. The video has 17 million YouTube views and 48 million Spotify listens. The track is one of his most licensed, having been placed in television series like Growing Pains, Pysch, Watchmen, and Stranger Things . and films including Is Anyone There? Bumblebee, and the recent horror film Tarot .

Treating today as though it was The last, the final show Get to 60 and feel no regret It may take a little time A lonely path, an uphill climb Success or failure will not alter it

The lyrics of the second verse above are fun to contemplate in retrospect now that Jones has passed the age of 60. Does he have any regrets now?

“No,” Jones says. “I think it’s been interesting with my career, because after the initial first two albums were so big, so quick, there was a time when I had to withdraw and it wasn’t going so well for me in terms of sales. But I was absolutely never going to give up on writing and recording and performing. It was a time when the ‘80s were really out of fashion. But I thought there will be a time when people realize that it actually was a really great time for pop music, and there were a lot of great things happening. That people will eventually come back to that, and then you can move on again.

“That’s what’s happening to me now. And this last part of my career, where I feel like everything I’ve learned I can apply now to what I do. It’s a maturing of the whole career. I can present my music the way I absolutely want to, with a great band and a great show. It’s very satisfying because it is what I love, so it’s a nice time for me.”

Howard Jones, ABC, and Haircut 100 are hitting the road for a U.S. tour that runs from August 14 to September 6. That’s quite an ‘80s pop package.

Tom Jones announces 2024 ‘Ages and Stages Tour.’ Get tickets today

Vivid Seats is the New York Post’s official ticketing partner. We may receive revenue from this partnership for sharing this content and/or when you make a purchase.

Touring at 84-years-old actually is unusual.

Iconic crooner Tom Jones just announced he’ll embark on a 17-concert North American tour this September and October.

Midway through the quick, late summer run, the ‘Ages & Stages Tour’ will take Jones and his timeless stable of his to a trio of New York and New Jersey venues.

First, he’ll swing into Atlantic City’s Hard Rock Live on Sunday, Sept. 15. Two nights later, the “What’s New Pussycat” singer drops into Brooklyn’s new Paramount Theatre on Tuesday, Sept. 17. The quick Tri-State run will come to a close at New York City’s Beacon Theatre on Wednesday, Sept. 18.

For those concerned that the octogenarian won’t sound like he did back when he won the Grammy for Best New Artist back in 1966, you need not worry.

“At 82, his voice was as strong as ever, and before I knew it I was up on my feet dancing in front of my chair,” Next Avenue wrote about a 2023 Jones show.

If this sounds like the show for you, fans can  purchase tickets for all upcoming ‘Ages & Stages’ shows on sites like Vivid Seats ; the official on-sale is Friday, June 28.

Vivid Seats is a secondary market ticketing platform, and prices may be higher or lower than face value, depending on demand.

They have a 100% buyer guarantee that states your transaction will be safe and secure and will be delivered before the event.

A complete calendar including all tour dates, venues and links to buy tickets can be found below.

Most recently, Jones performed in Spain on Sunday, June 23.

To see what he’s taking to the stage these days, you can find all the songs he sang that night, here:

01.) “I’m Growing Old” (Bobby Cole cover)

02.) “Not Dark Yet” (Bob Dylan cover)

03.) “It’s Not Unusual” (Les Reed cover)

04.) “What’s New, Pussycat?”

The above comes courtesy of Set List FM .

Jones isn’t just spending time on the road these days — he’s also in the studio.

Most recently, the Songwriters Hall of Fame inductee released his 12-track  “Surrounded By Time”  album in 2021.

Featuring Jones’ signature deep voice, he shies away from his typically upbeat fare for more melancholy, reflective fare like the heavy opening tune  “I Won’t Crumble With You If You Fall.”

Still, he has fun on catchy tracks like  “Popstar”  and  “Samson and Delilah.”

For our money, it’s the best classic rock record of the ’20s.

Want to dig even deeper? Check out the 233-song, 2022 compilation  “The Complete Decca Studio Albums Collection.”

Many icons that have been on the road since the ’60s are surprisingly still out and about.

Here are just five of our favorites you won’t want to miss live.

•  Ringo Starr

•  Bob Dylan with Willie Nelson and Robert Plant

•  Frankie Valli

•  Englebert Humperdinck

•  Righteous Brothers
