Being hungry and awake past midnight is something we’ve all been through. There are times when a quick rummage through the fridge or a fast food run can fix it—but there are other times when you just need a little extra something . 

Manila is one of the country’s food meccas (don’t quote me on that), and one of the main reasons is because you can find good food at all hours of the day. That includes Tuesdays at 1 a.m. when you can’t sleep because the state of the world is keeping you up at night. 

While yes, eating in the wee hours of the night is bad for you, sometimes the food isn’t for your stomach. It’s for your soul. So whether you’re at home and craving a meal you can’t have delivered or you’re hungry after a night out, here are some places open during the witching hour.

If you’re craving some warm miso soup after a crazy night in Poblacion (like you should), Yugi is one of the places you should run to. Something interesting about this restaurant is that nobody that runs it is Japanese. Nevertheless, the food’s still good. If you’re wondering if my drunk palate made this decision, I’d like to assure you that it didn’t. I made sure to come back sober to check.

Craving falafel and hummus at an ungodly hour doesn’t happen to everyone, but it does happen. Luckily, Hummus Elijah is open 24/7 on weekends to help satisfy that craving. Many people like to say that the food is too expensive for its quality. Okay, but where else are you going to find quality milkshakes at 2 a.m.? Also, make sure to order the breakfast sausage the next time you’re there. Trust me, it’s worth it. 

El Chupacabra

Ground Floor JVR Building, 5782 Felipe Street, Brgy. Poblacion, Makati City

Open Sunday to Wednesday, 11 a.m. to 11 a.m.; Thursday to Saturday, 11 a.m. to 2 a.m.

Cuisine: Mexican

El Chupacabra is another famous late-night spot that requires very little introduction. The restaurant serves authentic Mexican tacos as well as other beloved Mexican street food at a budget-friendly price. Just make sure to bring a fan when you eat here cause it can get a little hot.

Manila Chinatown: A first timer’s guide to Binondo Food Trip

Having spent 4 years studying inside Intramuros back in college, I asked myself why the hell I did not become a foodie when I was always a few sprints away from overrated and underrated kainans of Manila?

Well, that’s one of the maaaany regrets of my teenage years but I am making up with self now.

And so fast forward one day of February, me and my coffee friends went to Binondo : the world’s oldest Chinatown. Damn. This food crawl is also pretty much a walk down in history too. Very interesting! To give you a little background, this historical Chinatown was established in 1594 by Chinese traders back in the old days of the Philippines. And knowing that Chinese Mandarin is still being spoken well by the Filipino-Chinese residents of Binondo today amazes me.

Salazar Bakery

Coming from Lucky Chinatown Mall where we parked, our first stop was Salazar Bakery in Ongpin Street. First opened in 1947, this bakery is still a busy shop today. For starters, we had Hopia and Tikoy . But what aroused my palates was the Tikoy with Peanuts . I swear I thought it was weird at first but it got interestingly weird. And maybe interestingly good. I hella love the taste of Sago’t Gulaman and this tikoy is so insane it’s almost the same! Compliments well with the salty dry peanut filling. Love at first bite.

 Shanghai Fried Siopao

On the other side of Ongpin Street is Shanghai Fried Siopao . This street siopao only cost P22 and for chrissakes, my friends and I agreed to share two siopaos for all of us. The reason was to save our tummies and avoid being fully loaded as much as possible but maaan, the taste is hella good! Such a breath of fresh air from the processed ones we are having just because it is convenient. I mean, this one is fucking authentic I guess? So all in all, Shanghai Fried Siopao is my best-spent P22 and I am highly recommending it to you . And not having a whole Siopao is questioning what the hell is wrong.

New Quan Yin Chay Vegetarian Food House

Okay so this is the kind of menu that my fit fam would love. They cater to a wide variety of yummy food so we asked what’s their best seller and they gladly suggest the Seafood Soup . The big bowl of soup costs P150 and it’s very sulit . And for a vegetarian meal, I’d say it was tasty not to mention there’s a lot going on inside that bowl. Perhaps one of the best healthy eats in Binondo, for sure.

Café Mezzanine

Located on the 2nd floor in the heart of Chinatown, Café Mezzanine is a fusion of Filipino and Chinese Food. We ordered Lechon Kawali (P135), Kiampong (P70), and Xiaolongbao  (P180). Fucking tasty! I swear I loved it very much.

Lechon Kawali is always a stunner but that one is a jaw-dropper. Like seriously? How can good food be 10x better?

Their Kiampong is hardcore tasty as well. I could eat that alone without anything.

And the xiaolongbao? What the hell is xiaolongbao anyway? I never had it before. But I knew it was great! I like how it gives your mouth bursting flavors of sweet to savory. And a lot of joy too.

Dong Bei Dumplings

The famous hole in the wall authentic dumpling house in Yuchengco Street, Binondo. This tiny food house can be jam-packed, waited in line for minutes but they make your dumplings in front of you, so I think that was entertaining.

Okay. Can I just say that the dumplings were phenomenal? P200 for 14pcs. I personally think there is really no wow factor in this place but I like the fact that they are practicing the tradition of making dumplings every day. Fresh ingredients, made daily. Or maybe I still haven’t discovered the wow factor? But please, go to this place. You’ll love it there.

Eng Bee Tin

Another famous Chinese deli chain in Ongpin Street is Eng Bee Tin . Who doesn’t know Eng Bee Tin?! I personally love this because I grew up loving its best selling hopia! Their 3-story store is super awesome too. 1st floor is a grocery, the 2nd floor is the restaurant, and the 3rd floor is a freaking museum! Holy WOW. But unfortunately, the museum was under construction and was closed to the public. Which was pretty sad. Anyway, this store has a lot to offer. Name it, and they have it. Quality restaurant and well, hard to leave without a takeaway ube hopia!

Walking through Nueva Street in Binondo, you’ll see Holland . It wasn’t really that much not until the Chocnut drink mix  (P100) and Chocnut spread (P80). I mean, what kind of fresh heaven is this? I am biased in loving chocnut. Aren’t we all? We reached this mini grocery store at around 6:30 pm already and that only means missing Cuapao (pork buns)  Fucked, because I heard a lot of good reviews about it!

Sincerity Café and Restaurant

So we went on the other side of Yuchengco Street. And honestly, though I was totally looking forward to going to Sincerity Café and Restaurant only for one thing: Freaking frog legs . But a boy could only be so unlucky. We missed it for the universe. So we ended up ordering their famous claim to fame  fried chicken  (half for P160) and kikiam (forgot the price lol sorry) .

Their fried chicken is, well, fucking fantastic. It is to die for! Super far from the western style good ‘ol f. chicken. The chicken itself, from the outer crispy skin down to the bones, it has a mild sweetness, a balanced mix of spices and a hella homey taste.

Oh, kikiam . This one’s quite authentic, wrapped in actual bean curd skin. I can say that it’s the best tasting kikiam I had. And the sauce, man. Freaking adorable.

La Zhou La Mien

Since this is our 9th stop, let me fucking vomit first. Just kidding ! Hahaha I was so full already. But the heaviest meal comes at the end because life is full of unfair surprises. Me and my friends agreed to share a big plate of beef knife mien  for P260. And even if I feel very full, I still find it appetizing which for me was something new. I mean just looking at the photo itself.

Sooooo after 4 hours of binge eating, we walked back to Lucky Chinatown Mall, had some Thai milk tea, drove to the world trade center for Big Bad Wolf (I happen to buy 5 exciting books!) drove back to Quezon City to drink beers until 5 in the morning. Ahhhh lupet!

• For fuck’s sake, think before bringing a car. Parking was hella shitty. Or better yet, come early.
• If you think it’s good, eat it and enjoy it. Do not hesitate! Or you’ll regret the hell out of it.
• Start the food crawl early. Some restaurants are only open until late afternoon.
• Bring a water bottle. Trust me, it saves a lot.
• I should learn more about how to take good food photos.
• Good food is always better and cheaper when shared! We only spent not more than P500 each for all the food we ate.

The street is dotted with stalls and food carts, each offering its unique specialties. As you wander along the bustling street, you’ll encounter a wide variety of mouthwatering treats. From savory grilled skewers to flavorful noodles and rice dishes, this place has it all.

One of the highlights of Ugbo Street is the vibrant atmosphere that fills the air. I noticed that there are still a lot of people visiting even though it rained. Some people still look for food even with and without umbrellas on. The street becomes a lively meeting place for friends and families. All gather to indulge in the delicious street food on offer. It’s a true celebration of flavors and a testament to the culinary passion of the vendors. So, if you’re a night owl or simply someone looking to satisfy their cravings after sunset, Ugbo Street is the place to be. Immerse yourself in the vibrant street food scene and let your taste buds be the guide. Join me as we embark on a culinary adventure through the bustling streets of Ugbo and discover the flavors that make it a food lover’s paradise.

The Grilled Balut

Balut, a beloved Filipino delicacy, becomes even more exciting with the addition of spicy flavors. As I wander through the vibrant Ugbo Street, I can’t help but be drawn to the enticing aroma of grilled spicy balut. This unique take on the traditional balut takes the partially developed duck embryos and infuses them with a fiery blend of spices. Creating a dish that is sure to ignite the taste buds. The process begins with the carefully selected balut eggs. Their shells cracked open to reveal the partially formed duck embryos inside. These eggs are then marinated in a special blend of spices, which adds a kick of heat and intensity to the already distinct flavors of the balut. It’s a bold fusion of traditional and modern, resulting in a culinary adventure like no other.

Once marinated, the eggs are placed in a stainless bowl over a bed of glowing charcoal, where they are grilled to perfection. The heat from the charcoal imparts a smoky and charred exterior to the eggs. Further enhancing the spiciness and creating a delightful contrast of textures. While I appreciate the creativity and the boldness of flavors, I find that the dish’s inherent fishy taste doesn’t align with my personal preferences. However, for spice lovers and those who enjoy exploring new culinary horizons. This fiery creation is a treat that shouldn’t be missed.

House of DG’S Tumbungan at Lechonan

For the main course, I looked for some warm soup. I heard House of DG’S Tumbungan at Lechonan is a good place to go. Picture this: we’ll be dining outside, right where the magic happens. As we sit and enjoy our meal, we can watch the skilled cook in action, cooking up a storm right before our eyes. This charming eatery may not be flashy, but it exudes a certain charm that draws you in. It’s a place where the focus is on the food and the experience, rather than fancy decor. The lechon takes center stage here, stealing the spotlight with its crispy golden skin and succulent, flavorful meat. It comes with their signature sweet sauce. But let’s not forget about the Tumbong Soup.

Tumbong soup is a traditional Filipino dish that features the rectum (tumbong in Filipino) of a pig or other meat sources as the main ingredient. The rectum is thoroughly cleaned, cooked, and then used to prepare a flavorful and hearty soup. Every dish at House of DG’S Tumbungan at Lechonan is prepared with utmost care and expertise. From the crispy lechon to the intriguing tumbong and the flavorful kiampong, each bite reflects the culinary passion that defines this eatery.

The Magic Ice Cream

Afterward, we looked for a dessert and stumbled upon this smokey snack. It is an extraordinary frozen treat that goes beyond your ordinary scoop of ice cream. Here, the science of liquid nitrogen and the art of smoke come together to create a visually stunning and delicious experience like no other. The mystifying cloud of smoke emerges when liquid nitrogen is added to the ice cream base. The ice cream balls are enveloped in this magical haze, creating a theatrical display that adds an element of wonder and excitement to the entire ice cream experience. Magic Ice Cream is a testament to the power of science, creativity, and passion. Through a combination of unique techniques, simple ingredients are transformed into a frozen delight that leaves a lasting impression. The visual appeal of the smoke and the process itself creates a sense of anticipation, heightening the enjoyment of every bite.

However, as I indulge in this magical treat, I can’t help but notice that it’s different from traditional ice cream. It resembles the Filipino sweet corn junk food snack, but on a larger scale and with vibrant colors. The texture is crunchy and dry, reminiscent of a corn snack. It’s important to note that this unique ice cream requires immediate chewing as it can become even drier, which may pose a risk of discomfort to the tongue. Despite the deviation from traditional ice cream. Magic Ice Cream offers a one-of-a-kind experience that appeals to the senses and sparks curiosity. The combination of science, art, and creativity elevates the frozen treat to new heights. Making it a memorable and fascinating culinary adventure.

Aling Consuelo’s Halo-halo

Since the Magic Ice cream was not like what we expected, we searched for another dessert. The famous Aling Consuelo’s Halo-Halo. This charming establishment holds a special place in the hearts of locals and visitors alike. Thanks to its rich history dating back to 1960. Aling Consuelo’s commitment to quality and the preservation of their original recipe is evident in every spoonful of their halo halo. They have mastered the art of creating a dessert that stays true to its roots and continues to bring joy to the faces of those who indulge in it. It’s a testament to their dedication and passion for providing a delightful dessert haven in Ugbo.

As I take my first spoonful of Aling Consuelo’s halo-halo, I am immediately captivated by its lusciously creamy texture. Each bite is a velvety delight that effortlessly melts in my mouth. Leaving behind a symphony of flavors and a craving for more. The combination of finely crushed ice, sweetened fruits, and a delightful scoop of ice cream on top creates a luxurious treat that provides instant relief on a hot day or a delightful indulgence anytime. Aling Consuelo’s Original Halo Halo is not just a heavenly taste. It also represents nostalgia and a sense of community. Furthermore, with decades of operation, this beloved establishment has become an integral part of the Ugbo community.
