The Local Church

Dr. Paul Whisnant and our Missionaries have started and/or built 54 local Churches throughout Belize. Every week, thousands come to hear the Message of Jesus.

International Servants

Children Come First

We focus on helping children overcome poverty - for good. From our Feed-A-Child Centers to our Medical Clinics, the children always come first.

International Servants

Every day there are children going hungry in our villages. Many kids are severely malnourished. That's why we started our Feed-A-Child program - to stop this crisis.

Amanda Whisnant, Belize Mission Trip, mission trips to belize, belize mission project

Medical Care

Every year, our Medical Mission treats thousands of children & families who have little-to-no access to medical care, nor the money to buy critical medicine.

iservants

Education is the key to stopping the cycle of poverty for the next generation of children. That's why we've built schools in villages that had never had a school.

iServants

Stop Human Trafficking

A child suffering from hunger, violence, disease, and poverty is far more likely to become a victim of sex or human trafficking. Your gifts help to stop this.

Hear from one of our Board Members

You'll love hearing Dr. Steve Stewart's heart for God's missionary work here in Belize as he shares how you can help children in need - in Jesus' name - by praying, giving, and going.

Belize is a great location to lead Vacation Bible School, bring a sports team to lead sports clinics, run medical clinics in partnership with the Belizean Red Cross, help with construction projects, or even assist with micro-business setup and training. Our missionaries can work with you to explore your group’s gifts and the best ways to use them on the field in Belize to help empower the local church to continue serving long after your group leaves.

Sunday. Attend a local Belizean church, prep, and training for the ministry week

Monday - Thursday.  Ministry Days which can include sports, VBS, community outreach, and more

In-country transportation. From the moment you land at the airport until the moment you leave, we will take you everywhere during the week. You will not need to arrange your transportation, but teams should be prepared to do some walking as we navigate different villages and communities.

Housing. Your team will stay at either a hotel, lodge, or a rustic retreat center with access to showers, locations for group meals, and fellowship time.

Meals.  Breakfast, lunch, and dinner, every day! (Note: You need to pay for your meals at the airport while traveling, etc.)

Supplemental Traveler's Insurance. In the event of a medical emergency, you'll be covered with an international policy!

Pre-Trip Training Material. We provide training sessions, trip overview documents, assistance from our team of mission trip experts, and communication with in-country missionaries to make sure your group is fully prepared for your trip.

Pre, During, and Post-trip Devotionals.   This 4-week printed missions journal will help every team member grow and encounter Christ.

Airfare is not included in the trip cost, but will be taken care of by Servant Life's travel agent who gets humanitarian rates and often free baggage. You may book on your own if you prefer to do so, but we ask to approve the itinerary first.

Add-Ons:

Many groups take their last day to explore one of the many tourist locations around Belize including Caye Caulker Island where groups can snorkel the world’s third largest barrier reef, visit the ancient Xunantunich Mayan Ruins, or soar through the Belizean jungle on a zip line adventure. These are great options for groups to spend time together and debrief from their mission experience in preparation for returning home.

Program Overview

Join a 1-month mission trip to the Central American country of Belize ! You and your team will experience life in unique communities, like the urban center of San Ignacio and the rural farming community of Siete Millas, and experience a wide variety of life in Belize, connecting with immigrant families and the local church to learn about their way of life and serve in practical ways.

Relationships are a high priority in Belize. Your team will spend a good amount of time living daily life with host families—farming, cooking, cleaning, grocery shopping, going to church—and will walk away with an understanding of what life and faith look like in a different part of the world. Commit to living the local way and being open to opportunities that arise (and brush up on your Spanish!), and this trip will forever change the way you see God, yourself, and others.

IMMERSION FAQ

Top questions.

What will it cost me? The cost of the 1-Month BELIZE term is $5000. It the idea of fundraising that amount overwhelms you, stop now and read a few success stories from IMMERSION team members who had no idea where the money would come from when they first started this journey. We've seen over and over again how God can provide or far exceed the amount people need to go. Our staff team will also be there to encourage and motivate you with ideas and tips along the way.

Is there any training before I go? Each IMMERSION trip begins with a time of training, team building, and personal reflection in Fort Wayne, Indiana. EM's IMMERSION staff will share stories from the field, challenge your faith in new ways, and help you learn how to build healthy cross-cultural relationships.

After several days of training, you'll hop on a plane with your fellow adventurers and engage in a short on-the-field orientation to learn more about culture, safety, and the schedule for the weeks ahead.

To help you adjust to life back home, each 1-month trip concludes with a virtual debrief ZOOM call after your team returns home.

How can I communicate back home? We encourage you to pack your cell phone or other small, wifi-enabled device. Often, just turning off cellular data and connecting to a local hot spot is the best way to stay in touch with friends and family. In some IMMERSION locations, you'll be totally off the grid for weeks at a time. In other locations, you can get online daily. During your interview, please ask our staff about expectations for each country so you can be prepared!

Will EM provide a detailed packing list? We'll help you fit your entire life inside a backpack! It's one of the most freeing, humbling experiences to realize you can live with so little. Check out a country-specific packing list in your MyMission account when you start the application process.

What is included in the cost of the trip? Are there extra costs? On our side, we try to keep IMMERSION all-inclusive so you don't have to worry about any hidden fees or big, un-expected costs! All your essentials (airfare, food, housing, staffing, training) are covered once you arrive in Fort Wayne, Indiana—but plan a little extra for immunizations, travel to/from Indiana, or a new passport if you need one. We also recommend a small stash of spending money in case you need shampoo, snacks or souvenirs along the way. But this amount is minimal and totally up to you. Experience Mission also requires all team members to travel with a Personal Emergency Fund —a debit or credit card with $1,000-$1,500 available and $300 of reserve cash in case you were to have a medical issue or reason to travel home unexpectedly. This amount may seem high, but it's purely a precaution. Most team members never spend a penny of their emergency fund while on the trip.

Is the $500 deposit refundable? Once you commit to a trip, we're counting on you. We don't offer refunds, but we'll do our best to be flexible and work with you to transfer the funds to a different trip whenever possible. You can read more in our Payment & Refund Policy document.

I'm worried about fundraising. What have other team members done in the past? Once you're all-in, we're committed to helping you go. Over and over again, we've seen people roll up their sleeves and get creative. We've also seen God show up miraculously when team members had no idea how they'd raise enough. We provide a few helpful things to support you in the process:

  • Our IMMERSION Fundraising Guide with creative ideas and practical resources to get you started.
  • An online Fundraising Profile that allows you to easily collect donations, share your story and post updates about your progress. Credit card fees on these donation pages are less than a GoFundMe page, and all donations are tax-deductible for your donors.

Can I get college credit for participating in the program? We're happy to write a letter to your Academic Advisor or sign off on paperwork for your professor. Every college and university has different requirements for obtaining course credit, so it's up to you to do the research and make sure the IMMERSION program fits your school's expectations. But it's definitely possible! We've seen team members get approved for: foreign language, internships, study abroad, independent studies, or elective credits.

Communication

How often will I be able to communicate with home? We encourage you to pack your cell phone or other small, wifi-enabled device. Often, turning off cellular data and connecting to a local hot spot is the best way to stay in touch with friends and family. In some IMMERSION locations, you'll be totally off the grid for weeks at a time. In other locations, you can get online daily. During your interview, please ask our staff about expectations for each country so you can be prepared!

What if I have a personal emergency and need to talk with someone at home? In all things, we're there to support you. If you have a personal emergency, our staff will allow you to use the official EM phone with an international calling or data plan. In most locations, communication is fast and easy, but in some locations, it can be slow or very expensive to make a call back to the U.S. During your interview, ask our staff more about communication limitations or how we get in touch when there is an emergency.

What can I expect from the application process? We hope joining an IMMERSION team feels like an exciting, relational process. In our eyes, it's a two-way street—us getting to know you but also you learning more about Experience Mission. You don't have to be 100% committed to fill out an interest form , submit your application or even schedule a video interview. During your face-to-face video call with our staff, we hope you'll feel free to be yourself, ask lots of questions, and figure out if this is the right fit for you. Once you're accepted onto a team, it's up to you to say YES and begin fundraising using the free fundraising profile , making this adventurous idea become a reality.

How do I know if I fit the requirements for this team? We're not looking for perfect people, but simply individuals who want to challenge themselves as they serve others. IMMERSION is a program for young adults (ages 18-30) pursuing Jesus with a desire to grow in their faith. We look for people who can embrace a rugged lifestyle, respect cultural differences, build healthy relationships with teammates and locals, thrive away from home, and are in good physical, mental, and emotional health. Please note: Holy Land IMMERSION team members must be 21-30 years old and have previous international travel experience.

How many people will be on my team? We're expecting you to make some lifelong friends on IMMERSION! Each team is made up of 5-15 people who will know the good, bad and ugly about you. You'll sweat and serve and share so much life together across countless miles. We can't wait for you to meet each other.

Trip Philosophy

Will this program help me grow spiritually? We hope you'll look back on your IMMERSION term as a time of meaningful exploration and growth! In fact, we hope you're never the same. We hope your faith becomes more personal, deep and bold as you seek to live your mission on the trip but also once you get home. From personal experience, we know there is something incredibly powerful about leaving behind the familiar and serving others with our everyday lives.

What's the impact of IMMERSION? How do I know I'm part of something meaningful? Throughout the term, you'll have the opportunity to connect with a variety of local partners who already have a vision to reach their community. EM typically works alongside churches, missionaries, schools or non-profits in the community with the goal of cheering them on in their long-term work. We desire to encourage our local partners in the work they are already doing instead of taking over or coming in with our own agenda.

What will my daily schedule look like? Each day brings something new and gives you the chance to share Christ's love through everyday life moments! Most ministries are relationally focused, but there may also be opportunities for hands-on work projects such as painting schools, digging outhouses, or helping with agricultural projects. Our hope is that you'll find opportunities to serve whether you're leading VBS with your teammates, tutoring at a local school, attending church, participating in a Bible study, working in your host family's field, doing laundry in the river, going to the market, playing soccer, carrying water from the spring, or preparing meals with your host mom.

How will EM choose my host family? Our local partners help us identify trusted host families in each community. Host families are eager to have team members in their homes, but they are usually just as nervous as you are! Remember that this is a cross-cultural experience for them, too. Typically, we divide team members into pairs for homestays and families are within a short distance of one another, giving you the chance to see teammates around the community and serve together in a variety of ways.

Will I be able to share the Gospel? EM strives to share the message of Jesus in a way that is highly relational and respects each person's story and journey. Delivering this message of hope drives everything that we do, but we think it's especially important to partner with local people who can continue the process of growth and discipleship. Often, we've found the best moments to share your faith don't happen in a scheduled program, but in the midst of a real person-to-person conversation. These are the kinds of meaningful moments we try to facilitate on the trip. If you're interested, read more about How We Share the Gospel.

Is EM part of a specific religion or church denomination? Experience Mission is a Christian organization, although we aren't connected to any one church or denomination. Our staff members all have a personal faith in Jesus and come from a variety of church traditions and denominations. Our Statement of Faith in the About Us section of our website seeks to unite us, not divide us, in ministry.

Travel & Saefty

Do I need a passport or visa? International travel 101: You definitely need a passport! If a visa is needed for your trip, the EM staff will guide you through the process of applying for one after you join the team. Regarding visa costs, you can count on us to cover any visa fees as part of the trip! But if you don't have a passport yet, you'll want to start applying for one now. The good news is, it won't expire for 10 years so you can plan lots of trips after IMMERSION!

When will I get a trip itinerary? We'll send you an itinerary, including all flight information, approximately one month before the start of your trip. But you'll also receive a lot of details during pre-trip conference calls or by interacting with teammates and our staff on your team's Facebook group! These will start 3-4 months before the beginning to your trip.

What if there is an emergency that affects the entire team? What will we do? Your team leader, local community partners, and international staff are equipped to support you if there is an issue (i.e. natural disaster, political unrest, increased crime, etc.) while living abroad. If your team were to need to leave the country, each of you would be responsible to use your “Personal Emergency Fund”—a debit or credit card with $1,000-$1,500 available and $300 of reserve cash in case you were to have a medical issue or reason to travel home unexpectedly—to rearrange travel plans, but our staff would be available to guide you. EM encourages team members to purchase Travelers Insurance and offers provider recommendations once you join the team. We also take extra precautions by enrolling our teams in STEP (Safe Traveler Enrollment Program) through the U.S. Department of State. This means we will receive any urgent travel updates for U.S. citizens in the region where you are living and serving.

Should I purchase Travelers Insurance? Experience Mission requires all team members to travel with “Personal Emergency Fund”—a debit or credit card with $1,000-$1,500 available and $300 of reserve cash in case you were to have a medical issue or reason to travel home unexpectedly. This amount may seem high, but it's purely a precaution. Most team members never spend a penny of their emergency fund while on the trip. Although Travelers Insurance isn't required, we highly recommend it because it may help you recoup some costs if you did have an issue. We make a recommendation for one provider in your Mission Center who offers rates as low as 40 cents per day, so the cost is minimal.

If my parents need to get ahold of me, how can they reach me? Our office has a 24-hour line that is available to parents if they have an emergency at home and can't communicate with you directly. 30 days before your trip, we'll send your parents more information about how and when to use this line! We hope it gives them some peace of mind to know our staff is here to help if an emergency arises.

Who Will You Become?

We are passionate about seeing people make missions a lifestyle, not just a one-week or six-month experience. IMMERSION gives young adults the chance to go, but also the challenge to come back and make a difference in their home context. We're proud of the growing group of IMMERSION past team members who are choosing to live boldly. As you consider joining an IMMERSION team, ask yourself, “Who will I become?"

belize mission trips youtube

“Experience Mission has become a second family to me; a home away from home. Like so many of us, I was looking for meaning, purpose, and a chance to grow like I couldn't on my own. IMMERSION gives you the opportunity to expand your cultural perspective, expound on your ideologies, and experience the freedom of living outside your comfort zone. But most importantly, it gives you the opportunity to love people across cultural boundaries and in new ways.

I came on IMMERSION hoping to make some big life decisions. But instead, I got confusion. The beautiful thing is, it left me more open to what God wanted for me instead of what I wanted. Starting this fall, I will be attending a Bible college and pursuing a career in ministry! It started with a click of a button. Requesting information about the IMMERSION program.”

belize mission trips youtube

“IMMERSION honestly changed the direction of my life. I may have thought I knew what I needed but God knew what He was doing putting me on a trip to Africa. I was able to find out the truth about myself and my identity in Christ and in turn walk alongside others to give them hope.

After IMMERSION, I wanted to make sure to come back to America with a Kingdom worldview. A missional mindset. I wanted to glorify God in my work. I now work with international students where I am able to talk about my experiences through IMMERSION and relate to them on a new level. I understand the challenges they face while missing home and learning a new culture. I love being able to teach and work with international students because they are so eager and I am able to bring a new light into their experience."

As a parent of someone considering the IMMERSION program we know you may have questions, so we've tried to answer a few of them here. Although team members are over 18 and will be treated as adults, your support and input are so valuable as they make plans. So, thank you for cheering them on!

Many of these details (and more) will be discussed with team members during the application process and pre-trip conference calls or are already listed as accessible resources for all applicants. If you feel like you have a lot of unanswered questions, we encourage you to talk with team members and review the available information together to help you feel more in the loop.

About Experience Mission

Is EM part of a specific religion or church denomination? Experience Mission is a Christian organization, although we aren't connected with any one church or denomination. Our staff members all have a personal faith in Jesus and come from a variety of church traditions and denominations. Our Statement of Faith seeks to unite us, not divide us, in ministry.

But I've never heard of Experience Mission. Yeah, we know! As a relatively young organization (founded in 2003) our name is still new to many. Although we're continually developing partnerships with Christian conferences, universities, and denominations, much of our marketing efforts are focused on word of mouth and getting opportunities in front of people online. We trust the right volunteers and partners will find us and share our desire to be people of hope in a broken world. You can read Our Story for more details about how and why we got started!

How do I know EM is a credible organization? Experience Mission will have over 4,000 short-term (1-2 week) volunteers serve with us this year and over 120 IMMERSION team members! We're proud of our growing network of church leaders and young adults all over the world. Throughout the interview process, we are happy to provide applicants with references if they'd like to talk directly with team members who have been a part of IMMERSION in the past. Our alumni network is thriving and many are eager to share their experience!

Are donations toward this trip tax-deductible? Since EM is a 501c3 non-profit, any donations made through the EM website or any checks mailed to the EM office are tax deductible. All donors receive receipts for tax purposes outlining their contributions.

  • Fundraising Coach to cheer team members on, give a pep-talk if they feel discouraged, and help them stay on schedule.
  • EM's Fundraising Guide with creative ideas and practical resources to get team members started.
  • Online Fundraising Profile which allows team members to easily collect donations, share their story on social media, and post updates about their progress. There are no fees and all donations are tax-deductible for donors.

What is EM's refund policy? Once team members commit to a trip, we're counting on them. Due to the long-term logistics that are set in motion when team members join a team, we aren't able to offer refunds, but we do our best to be flexible and work with team members to transfer their funds to a different trip whenever possible. Team members can also read more about our Payment & Refund Policy by signing in to their MyMission account.

What happens if EM cancels a trip? If a trip is canceled by Experience Mission because of the minimum team size not being met, safety concerns in the community, natural disaster, or another issue, we will provide the team member with other options during the same timeframe and transfer any available funds to the new trip. If a team member cannot find a location that interests them during the same timeframe, they will be offered a credit to be used toward a future IMMERSION trip within 24-months of the original start date.

How long has EM been working in these communities and do they work with trusted partners? Depending on the specific location, EM has been working in a community anywhere from 1-15 years. We work with local people who are often pastors, non-profit managers, missionaries, school teachers, or indigenous leaders. These local leaders work closely with our full-time staff and the IMMERSION team leader to identify host families, select ministry sites, place volunteers in classrooms, navigate cross-cultural barriers, and determine safety guidelines. We couldn't and wouldn't do ministry without our local partners!

How reliable is communication and how often should we expect to be able to connect with team members? As a general rule, we typically tell team members to expect to have access to the internet every other week. However, it could be more or less often depending on the exact location. Team members should ask about this during the application and interview process in order to set good expectations for their specific trip. In some IMMERSION locations, team members will be completely off the grid for weeks at a time. In other locations, they may be able to get online daily.

Will I receive updates from EM throughout the trip? In regards to travel, we encourage you to go by the mantra that "no news is good news." Our staff will be in communication with the team and inform you if there is an emergency, but otherwise, you will not receive updates about delays, flight changes, arrival times, etc. We ask all team members to keep friends and family in the loop, but please know that in some locations their updates to you may not be immediate or frequent. We encourage all family and friends to "Like" EM on Facebook and keep an eye out for posts on the IMMERSION Blog as a way of receiving periodic updates throughout the trip!

What happens if there is an emergency at home and I can't communicate with a team member directly? Our office has a 24-hour line that is available to parents if there is an emergency at home and the family can't communicate with a team member directly. In this case, our staff would help relay a message and support the team member in whatever way possible. 30 days before the trip, the official emergency contact will receive more information about how and when to use this line! We hope it gives you some peace of mind to know our staff is available to you as a resource if there is an emergency.

Can I visit my son or daughter while they're on IMMERSION? Over the years, we've seen how visits from family members in the middle of IMMERSION can create distractions (or extra homesickness) for both team members and teammates. Additionally, it can be a logistical challenge for families to arrange transportation or housing in remote communities, creating a burden for our partners or host families. For this reason, we ask parents and other family members to refrain from planning to visit team members during the trip unless Experience Mission staff has given special permission ahead of time.

Belize Mission Trips

Deep pelican roots.

With deeply rooted partnerships and newly developed relationships with local pastors and churches, there are incredible ministry opportunities for your mission group when you serve on a Belize mission trip. This small country is the only country in Central America where English is the official language, so it will be easy for you to communicate directly with the local community members.

Kids ministry, church planting, sports ministry, evangelism, and a variety of other ministry opportunities are available to you. You can choose which ministries your team are best suited for prior to serving in Belize on your mission trip. With our genuine partnerships already in place, you will find yourself encouraging a pastor in sustainable ways that will continue to impact the community after you have returned home.

Belize is a place that has great beauty, but still has great need. This country and its hospitable people will grab your heart in such a way that you will want to form a long-term relationship with your host pastor and community. It is possible to return to the same community every year to continue to encourage the local pastor.

We know that both the lives of the individuals on your Belize missions team as well as the lives of those you serve will be impacted as you dedicate and use your talents, gifts, and abilities for the Lord with your family, youth group, college group, or intergenerational group this year.

Year-Round Ministry

PPM's ministry is an ongoing effort to build up, encourage, and assist the local Church 365 days a year. Nearly every week of every year, we have a team serving short-term somewhere in the world. Our partner pastors and ministry leaders receive ministry support, training, and encouragement when mission teams aren't on the ground through our partner support program.

Belize FAQs

What is included in the cost.

Prior to the trip, the team leader will receive a group leader manual, which includes fundraising ideas and information to help with every aspect of trip planning. You will also receive access to your own online group account that will equip you to easily organize and plan for your trip. You will have access to online trip handbooks and resources for participants, promotional materials, group t-shirts and unlimited pre-trip consultations with your trip leader or location consultant. Your consultant will help you utilize your customizable ministry options and will identify a ministry partner that fits with your team.

Once in your ministry location, your team will be taken care of by a trained PPM staff, given safe meals, transported to/from the airport and to/from ministry sites each day, have plenty of safe drinking water, appropriate sleeping accommodations, an opportunity to attend local church services, evening worship, prayer, debriefing meetings, and experience a local sightseeing or recreation activity.

What is NOT included in the cost?

The registration fee, airfare, passports, vaccinations, spending money, offering at church services, construction and/or ministry materials, personal insurance, and extra recreation options outside of the normal recreation outing (ex. zip lining, snorkeling, surf board rental). Extra recreation options vary depending upon location, be sure to speak with your consultant about these options if you desire to add them to your trip. Please reference the pricing table above for any other exclusions.

Where will my team serve within the ministry location?

Within each of our partner countries we have multiple church and parachurch partners where teams serve. Not all teams serve at the same church or ministry. We determine ministry partnership assignments typically 6-8 weeks prior to mission trip dates. Throughout the planning process leading up to your trip, your consultant will be determining the best location(s) for your team and will let you know where your team will be serving as soon as we have confirmed that information. We will be doing our best to partner your team with churches and opportunities where your team will be best utilized.

Where will my team sleep?

Teams that select a trip with floor sleeping accommodations will sleep in a church, school, or community center. They will be divided by gender, and men's and women's rest rooms/showers will be available. Teams that choose a trip with hotel option usually sleep 3-5 people per room, with two people per double bed and individuals sleeping in single beds. All rooms are designated either male or female. There is no gender mixing.

What about safety?

Praying Pelican Missions holds safety as a top priority. PPM staff are trained and equipped to provide a safe and incident-free mission experience. PPM staff will be with your team for the entire trip and will have access to transportation, cell phones, hospitals, and first aid kits at all times. In the event of an emergency, PPM staff will guide and assist your team with proper next steps.

What about meals?

In most locations, three main meals per day will be served to your team (please see the table above). These meals will be a mixture of local cuisine dishes and potentially, a few American style dishes. During your consulting process, you will be able to identify team members who have allergies or dietary restrictions. PPM will do our best to accommodate these needs and all food and drink provided by PPM during trips is safe to eat. Purified drinking water will be provided for the team every day and for the cooks to use while preparing meals. We recommend if you have more severe dietary restrictions or allergies, that you bring along appropriate snacks.

Is there a language barrier?

In many of our countries, local communities are bi or trilingual, with English being one of their languages. However, for some locations English is not a widely known language and yes, there will be a language barrier. In those locations, PPM will provide a local staff team who will serve at assistant trip leaders and be available as translators for your team.

How do you choose your staff?

Your PPM staff members of your trip will be a mixture of full-time staff, local staff and seasonal interns. We believe in the value of local staff members and the health it brings to the ministry we are doing.

Belize Location Info

Belize basics.

Belize is a unique country, full of lush landscapes, rich history, and amazing people. Almost 400,000 people call Belize home and make up a diverse society that is composed of many cultures and languages. The country is bordered to the North by Mexico, and Guatemala to the West and South, with the Caribbean Sea to the East. Due to its strong ties to both the American and Caribbean regions it is also often claimed as a Caribbean nation as well as Central American.

Climate, Language, & Safety

The climate is generally tropical, with daily weather typically averaging around 70 - 80 degrees Fahrenheit and very humid. Pronounced wet and dry seasons as consistent each year, although the intensity of these seasons varies by region within the country. Also, temperatures can fluctuate according to elevation and if you're near to the coastline.

It is the only Central American country where English is the official language, while Belizean Creole is the most widely spoken dialect. Spanish is the second most commonly spoken language, followed by Mayan and German dialects and Garifuna. This diverse foundation of languages allows over half the country to be multilingual!

Belize is generally considered a safe place for visitors to travel. Your PPM staff will be with you every step of the way and they and your host church will keep your and your teams' safety as top priority

Economy & Currency

Belize is a small, mostly private enterprise economy based primarily on industries like agriculture, merchandising, tourism and more. Sugar remains the largest profitable crop and the banana industry is one of the nation's largest employers.

The current exchange rate is 2:1 ($1 dollar US equals $2 Belizean dollars).

Food & Fun

Participants typically enjoy the food prepared by local cooks using authentic Central American recipes. Belizean food has been likened to a mixture of Spanish and Caribbean influences. Rice and beans, fry jacks, and panades are some of the staples that you can find almost anywhere.

Belize is known for its incredible beaches, moving Mayan ruins sites, and eco-diversity. The interior mountain areas and coastlines are beautiful, all the while boasting the second largest barrier reef in the world. Forty percent of the country is dedicated to nature preserves!

History & Religion

European contact began in 1492 when Columbus sailed along the Gulf of Honduras, with European exploration beginning by English settlers in 1638. Belize gained their independence in 1981 and were formerly known as "British Honduras".

Most recent reports show this breakdown: Roman Catholic 50%, Protestant 27% (Pentecostal 7%, Anglican 5%, Seventh-Day Adventist 5%, Mennonite 4%, Methodist 4%, Jehovah's Witnesses 2%), none 9%, other 14%

Belize Mission Trip and Resources

Every knee, every tongue, everything - philippians 2:10-22, if you reached this page, but are looking for our belize ministry page, please click here ., we will be traveling to belize june 8-15, 2024 to minister to the people of bullet tree, belize  the documents listed below will be updated as more information becomes available., information on flights and what to expect can be found in our  team information document ., our 2023 final briefing notes are here .  note:  this is a speaking outline . . . it is not written in complete sentences and is here for team member reference.

Our 2023 menu and schedule is posted here!

If God has called you to join us,  please visit our contact page  and let our pastor know!

Our ministry in Belize this year will be to support missionaries  Brandi & Junior McIntosh .  We will work alongside them to minister to the people of Bullet Tree, Belize.  Our primary ministry will be relationship building.  Toward that end, we will conduct Vacation Bible School daily.  We will also conduct a visitation ministry.  As always, we will give away treat/toy bags and flip-flops (slippers in Belize) as God brings people into our lives.

Our primary goal is evangelism .  Evangelism is simply the spreading of the Gospel (the good news about Jesus) by public preaching or personal witness.   Our prayer is that every team member will be able to lead at least one person to faith in Jesus.  The material that follows will help team members prepare themselves for sharing the Gospel.

Every team member/Christian should be prepared to share their testimony.  Your testimony is simply telling someone how you came to know Jesus as your Lord and Savior.  Please, do NOT get stressed over this!   You may have never shared your testimony, or tried to lead someone to Jesus.  That is fine!  God is so gracious and LOVES to fill His children with His Word as they present His story!   Luke 12:12 says:   " the Holy Spirit will teach you in that very hour what you ought to say."   Your part in making this promise come true is to study the material below . . . to know it . . . to know your story and how God's Word has changed your life.  God promises that if you will get into His Word, when the time comes, He will AMAZE   you with what He says through you!  What a privilege!

Note:   all   of the resources/links presented below are associated with the Southern Baptist Convention.  This fellowship is a Southern Baptist fellowship.  There are  numerous resources from different evangelical Christan faith traditions that you will find useful!  If you have a question about a resource, please talk to our pastor!  The point here is:  SHARE YOUR FAITH WITH SOMEBODY !  You will never die because of Jesus!  You are blessed and adopted by the King of the Universe!  Isn't it important for you to share that with  someone and encourage them to receive what you have?

Your Story Is His Story

Every time you tell your story of how you became a follower of Jesus (your testimony), you give honor and glory to God, and He is pleased with that.

Your story — regardless of how “spectacular” or “ordinary” you think it is — is a story about God’s character. It is your eyewitness account of how God rescued you from sin and death through Jesus Christ and changed your life as a result.  You should be able to deliver your testimony in as little as 2 minutes (if you are pressed for time), or a more lengthy time (if you have time to dialog with the person).

When you share your story with others, you help them get to know what God is like and what He can do.

There are five basic parts to telling your story:

  • The Opening.  Identify a theme you can use to frame your story. What did your life revolve around (e.g., relationships, your reputation, money) that God used to help bring you to Him? Briefly illustrate how that influenced your life.
  • Your Life Before Christ.  Paint a picture of what your life was like before you came to Christ. Don’t dwell too much on or brag about past sins or struggles. Share only the details that relate to your theme — just enough to show your need for Christ.
  • How You Came to Christ.  Give the details about why and how you became a Christian. Communicate in such a way that the person you are talking with, and anyone who overhears you, can understand how they can become a Christian too. Even if your listeners are not ready for that, God could use your story and explanation of the gospel to draw them to Himself in the future.
  • Your Life After Coming to Christ.  Share some of the changes that Christ has made in your life as they relate to your theme. Emphasize the changes in your character, attitude or perspective, not just the changes in behavior. Be realistic. We still struggle as Christians. Life is far from perfect. But what’s different about your life now?
  • The Closing.  End with a statement that summarizes your story and connects everything back to your theme. Ask them if they are ready to receive Jesus as their Savior!   You may even want to close with a Bible verse that relates to your experience.

Guidelines for preparing your testimony:

  • Pray before you write out and share your story.
  • Write the way you speak.
  • Don’t be overly negative or positive. Be honest .
  • Don’t criticize or name any church, denomination, organization, etc.
  • Think about your listeners. Avoid "religious" terms.
  • Keep it short. Aim to tell your story in three to five minutes.
  • Practice telling your story until it becomes natural.

One of the most effective, and easiest to remember, ways of presenting the Gospel is the Romans Road.  This plan only uses verses from the book of Romans.   You don't need to memorize these verses in perfect King James English!  You should practice your memorization of these verses until they are just natural to you and you can work the concept of these verses into a normal conversation.  Memorize them in your own words!

For example: "there was a time in my life that I became aware that something was missing.  Something just wasn't right.  I understood that it was because I was not doing what God wanted.  I knew that because of my separation from God that I would die.  But someone told me that God would give me the gift of eternal life when Jesus became my Lord.  You ask, why would God give me such a gift?  Because He loves me and He showed me that there was nothing He wouldn't do to make me His child, even allowing His Own Son to die for what I had done wrong.  So, I believed what the Bible said: that God had raised Jesus from the dead after He had died for the things I had done that were wrong.  That brought me to the point that I confessed that Jesus is my Lord and my Savior.  God showed me that if I called on His name, I would be saved, and be His child forever."

As you can see, the paragraph above (look at the verses below and then compare them to the paragraph above) is the Romans Road plan of salvation!  It is delivered in simple, plain English and does not use any "church" words that the hearer may not understand.  It takes less than one minute to read the paragraph above, but you have presented the  entire Gospel in that time!  Note:  that paragraph is just one example of how to  quickly present the Romans Road plan of salvation!  Each time I tell it, I use slightly different words.  The point here is for you to read the verses below and find a natural way to communicate what the Bible says!  If you need help, please let our pastor know!  He would be HAPPY (DELIRIOUSLY HAPPY) to help you learn how to present your testimony and the Gospel!

Because of your sin, you are separated from God.  “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23).

The penalty for sin is death.  “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Romans 6:23).

The penalty for your sin was paid by Jesus Christ!  “But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us” (Romans 5:8).

If you repent of your sin, confess and trust Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, you will be saved from your sins!  “That if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation” (Romans 10:9-10). “For ‘whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved’” (Romans 10:13).

A discussion of the Romans Road can be found here .

Another  very effective way to present the Gospel uses  only John 3:16, a verse almost everyone knows!

The outline: He loved, He gave, we believe, we live!  The first part of the verse tells us that God loves us SO much!  He then tells us that He gave us His Own, only Son to pay the price for our sin.  Our response is to  believe .  If we do, we live!  There are a  lot of other verses you could bring into this discussion.  You can also easily bring your own experience with Jesus to show the truth of this verse!  If the Romans Road seems like a lot to memorize, work on this presentation of the Gospel!

There is no wrong way to present the Gospel!  Just tell people what God has done in your life!

You do NOT have to be able to present ALL of the material below!  These are tools you may find useful.  You may find that you are comfortable combining parts of each, or using a completely different way to tell His story!  Pick the one you feel most comfortable with and learn how to use it effectively.  Again, our pastor would LOVE to help you learn how to use ANY of them!  There are many other ways to share your faith!  If you have a method that fits your gifting better, PLEASE feel free to use it, AND let your pastor know!

Safety first, a few notes on safety:.

• Belize is a Democracy and is safe and stable from a government perspective.

• Belizeans look up to and admire Americans. We have found that they naturally take care of people from North America and very much watch over our mission teams.

• Tourism, particularly on the cayes, is a part of their economy. So they take pride in the safety of foreigners.

• We travel in groups at all times, we sleep in the same building, and safety in numbers is a big safety factor.

• We have Belizeans on our staff who are with the group during the whole trip. They have knowledge and experience in Belizean safety precautions and know the country very well.

• Our staff members have Belizean cell phones on them, know where the nearest hospitals are, and have plans in place for unique circumstances.

• All members on the trip have our Belizean trip leaders cell phone number in the unlikely case they would be separated from the group.

• We travel by bus, with a professional bus driver. We also have a Thirst Mission vehicle with each group in case there is a need for quick transportation to the nearest doctor or hospital.

• We rarely travel at night, if there is a risky time of day, it would be after dark.

• We suggest a 5-1 student to adult ratio. Overseeing and supporting our participants is a priority.

• We take care in trying to provide safe meals, snacks, and plenty of water to all trip members.

• Prayer. We can’t underestimate the power of prayer on each trip and for each person. We ask that each participant on the trip find at least 5 prayer partners to cover them in prayer during the trip.

We have many years of experience in Belize. We know how to travel, what to look out for, and how to handle things.

That being said, we have never had an issue and certainly endeavor to take every safety precaution with every group. Belize is a very safe country to travel to, especially as a group member. We pray that the Lord will bless our preparations and the precautions we take as we attempt to minister to the people of Belize and members of our group.

“ "Any worry about raising funds, safety, food or the unexpected should completely dissolve. God was, is and will be present every hour of every day while serving in Belize. This trip will make you pray more earnestly, trust more completely and live more fully every day for Christ Jesus our Lord. And when you get home, you will feel incomplete if you don’t’ do the same." Medical Mission Trips to Belize

Thank you for your interest in imr’s medical mission trips to belize this is a very unique opportunity to work with populations that have little to no access to healthcare and make a huge impact on their lives..

Join International Medical Relief (IMR) on this health education tour and medical mission trip to Belize. Visit the beautiful town of San Ignacio, near the Guatemalan border and within walking distance of ancient Mayan ruins.

Our volunteer team will set up clinic inside of a private hospital in San Ignacio, where you will help to treat incoming and existing patients. Some of the more common diseases in this area include malaria, Chagas disease (kissing bug disease), dengue fever, and leishmaniasis. Other more serious conditions include diabetes, cardiovascular disease, cancers, and chronic respiratory diseases.

You and the rest of the volunteer team will also educate locals on how to stay healthy and how to care for their loved ones. One of the main focuses of this mission is women’s health. Because all community members are encouraged to attend, the demand for dental care will be high. Another main focus of this mission is women’s healthcare, so you will provide general women’s and infant care, as well as empower women to seek higher education.

Two IMR providers with a provider from Belize

Clinics will take place in the beautiful towns throughout Belize. You will have the opportunity to provide community health education with medical care, dental care, and health and hygiene education to hundreds of patients during the week.

The Mission

Join International Medical Relief (IMR) on this medical mission and health education tour in Belize. Visit many beautiful towns throughout Belize that are in need of partnership to elevate healthcare throughout this country. The focus of this mission is extending sustainable education alongside medical and dental relief efforts. Although demand for care will be high, we will be managing clinic participation with heightened protocols to manage the flow and protect volunteers as well as clinic participants.

Lodging & Transportation

You and your fellow team members will be accommodated at a safe, clean, and comfortable lodging during the duration of your IMR clinical trip. Transportation will be provided to and from clinic each day. Airport transportation to your lodging is included for anyone on the group flight, or can also be purchased individually through our partner, Worldwide Navigators,  here . If you would like to join the group flight, be sure to complete your application and  notify us  of your interest by the early bird date.

Personally, I have never felt more sure of my path and my decision to serve my community in healthcare. I have been enlightened in observing the way each member of IMR's volunteer team contributes something individual and unique but also incredibly critical to the team as a whole. Trip Highlights

From the moment you arrive in Belize, the people and culture make you feel as welcome and comfortable like nowhere you’ve ever visited. The natural beauty of the country and the inviting culture of the Belizean people are the highlights for this mission! A unique aspect of Belize is the fact that its undeveloped areas have allowed for nature to live on in a way that draws biologists and environmentalists. With a laid-back ambiance of swinging hammocks, large swaths of impenetrable jungle, and an underwater world of twisted corals, neon fish, and gentle manatees, Belize is a tropical treasure. Belize is home to many different ethnic groups, including Creole, East Indian, Mayan, and Mestizo, each with their own cultural and linguistic traditions. As a result, many languages are spoken here, but English is the official language.

Belizeans of all cultures broadly welcome visitors as they are warmly greeted with large smiles. When you’re not exploring the natural beauty of Belize be sure to experience the local cuisine. Famous dishes from the local Garifuna people include a cassava bread called ereba and various rice dishes. Many of our volunteers find that the best part of their mission is the chance to experience some of the different cultures of Belize. With countless opportunities to do so, this will be a trip you never forget.

Food & Water

All food is typically provided during your stay. Please refer to your unique itinerary on our website to review which meals are provided each day. We may hire local people to cook for the team during our visit, or we may eat at restaurants or hotels. Lunch in clinic may include sandwiches made by the team or a feast prepared in your honor by community leaders. We recommend bringing snacks to eat during the day or evening or to supplement your lunch. High protein/high fat/high energy snacks are best. IMR also provides all of the drinking water for the team. Hydration and nutrition are extremely important for the health of the team. You are the best judge of your own health so please pack appropriate snacks and stay well hydrated on the trip.

Extend Your Stay!

You’re journeying halfway across the globe. Have you considered extending your stay to visit some of Guatemala’s top spots not far from Belize? Join International Medical Relief on an exclusive trip extension provided by our partner, Worldwide Navigators! You can reach them [email protected]  to learn more about what they can do for you!

Itinerary is subject to change without notice.

Full Mission (7-8 Days)

You will land at Philip S.W. Goldson International Airport in Belize City. The team will take the chartered transportation to your hotel located in San Ignacio to check in, then gather for dinner and team orientation. During orientation, your team leader will assign roles for clinic, discuss our community health education efforts in detail, present IMR’s clinic protocols, and provide an overview of the communities your team will serve.

After enjoying a group breakfast full of native, Belizean flavors, your team will transfer to La Loma Luz Adventist Hospital, the location for your clinic days ahead. Your team will take a tour of the facility, set up for clinic as needed, and have a site orientation. After preparing the site, your team will begin seeing patients this afternoon.

Clinics begin in the morning and run into the evenings. Your days will be long and hard, but also incredibly rewarding. After the clinic, regroup with your team at your lodging facility for a clinical debrief and team dinner.

Although all your meals are all included, you are welcome to go into town with your fellow team members to enjoy the excellent cuisine that Belize has to offer.

Clinics begin in the morning and run into the evenings. Your days will be long and hard, but also incredibly rewarding. Although all your meals are all included, you are welcome to go into town with your fellow team members to enjoy the excellent cuisine that San Ignacio has to offer.

After clinic, regroup with your team at the hotel for a clinical debrief and team dinner.

Your hotel is located very close to the Guatemalan border and you are invited to explore the area. You may want to wake early in the mornings to walk to see the nearby Mayan ruins.

Free Day/Optional Training Day: International Medical Relief will bring the sustainable community and public health education and training to Belize.

Education is as important as medical and dental care for our patients. Each clinic includes basic health education according to the specialties and skills of the IMR volunteers, as well as the needs of the local people. When communities become empowered to take health and wellness issues into their own hands, they become self-sufficient. IMR provides learning opportunities for the local communities through classes and hands-on learning to sustain their well-being beyond our visit.

Clinic days: during your days in clinic you’ll discover how something as simple as a plastic pair of reading glasses can make an enormous difference in someone’s life.

On your last day in the country, enjoy a complimentary breakfast with your team. Take one final walk around town and say goodbye to beautiful Belize.

Crisis Management & Emergency Response

We take security very seriously at IMR. It is our job to ensure that security precautions are in place, but please keep in mind that we cannot guarantee your safety on the trip.

  • We continuously review all current activities occurring on the ground, and we work with the State Department and the U.S. Embassy to know the ground situation to the best of our ability.
  • A security training conference call is available to our volunteers where we detail our security procedures that are in place for the trip.
  • We take many security precautions such as radios, a buddy system, emergency evacuation plan and security planning.
  • We protect the privacy of our volunteers in the field and provide them with customized contact information for their use.
  • During our mandatory briefing, team members review our safety protocols, evacuation procedures, protocols for illness, natural disaster and terrorism. We provide training to our teams to be cognizant of their own safety and to be aware of their surroundings.
  • Several policies require teams to adhere to safety issues.

Experience the world of medical missions. Get valuable cross-cultural medical experience under the leadership and guidance of local practitioners.

March 11-19, 2023 (could vary slightly).

Specifics TBD

The Experience

Our team will work alongside local medical professionals and ministries to set up health clinics. This beautiful experience gives our health sciences students a chance to experience medical missions firsthand.

Our Ministry Partner

Praying Pelican Missions is a leader in short-term missions to Belize and specializes in a number of areas, including medical missions.

Fundraising Goal

Who should participate.

This trip is reserved for students in the health sciences (pre-med, nursing, and other health sciences) who have junior or senior standing.

Cross-cultural ministry experience and proficiency in Spanish are helpful and valued in the team selection process. Since we don't spend all of our time working on medical missions, we look for students with an ability to be energetic, spontaneous, and adaptable.

Tracy youth group visits belize on mission trip.

belize mission trips youtube

Photo courtesy of Amy Munson Teenagers from Tracy Lutheran Church made a mission trip Belize this past summer.

TRACY — Teenagers from Tracy Lutheran Church spent a week of their summer learning about life in a Central American country.

They visited Belize, a small nation located next to Mexico on the Caribbean Sea. They were based in the Belize capital city of Belmopan, where they saw that many of the 400,000 Belize residents live in poverty.

“Belize has contrasts,” said Tracy Lutheran Church youth minister Amy Munson. “Much of the coast is modern and has tourism. We saw poverty. The tourists don’t go where we went.”

The mission trip included construction of a fence next to a church, getting a home ready for three 18-year-olds to occupy, and visiting the Kings Children’s Home.

Munson said the fence was needed because of the level of crime in Belize. Many places have fences with posts that are encased in concrete.

“Our hosts thought the fence would take most of the week but we finished it in one day,” she said. “The kids demonstrated a great Midwestern work ethic. It impressed people.”

She said the house had no running water and a large number of dead lizards when they started to upgrade it. By the end of the week it was in good condition.

Munson said a substantial number of children in Belize go to orphanages because their parents are too poor to provide for them.

When they turn 18 they have to leave the orphanage and function as adults. Many aren’t ready for that. They sometimes fall victim to the drug trade or human trafficking.

“It was rewarding to help in providing three teenagers with a safe place to live,” Munson said. “They have a house mother who is the biological mother of two out of the three, so the family was reunited.”

Youth group members Danika Radke and Amber Hensch said they also enjoyed visiting Kings Children’s Home. They were able to lead young children as they played and to socialize with the teenagers.

Radke said all of the residents were happy, respectful and appreciative. She’ll always remember joining a game which she thought was catch. She learned it was actually tag.

“Saying goodbye to those kids was hard,” Radke said. “In a few short days I made connections that felt like years. I hope the time we spent with the kids meant as much to them as it did to me. They taught me many lessons.”

She’s impressed by how the children and the people of Belize are happy even though they live in poverty. She said they manage to get through life without many of the material comforts that are considered essential in the United States.

“Their outlook on life is much different from ours,” she said. “They are just happy to be alive. They’re grateful that God gave them life. They don’t need all of the things we think we need to survive.”

Hensch said the teenagers were very interested to hear about life in the United States and that they liked hearing about the economic opportunities available to young people.

“Down in Belize there is close to no opportunities for jobs, especially not for teens looking to save for themselves or help out their families,” Hensch said. “They loved hearing about what kinds of jobs were available in the United States. They were amazed at all the options.”

In addition to Radke and Hensch, participants in the Belize mission trip included Aiden Sanow, Allie Adams, Ginny Munson, Evelyn Ourada, Chloe Her, Landon Cochran, Brody Byrnes, Hadyn Ohman, Becky Hensch, Dawn Kunkel, Jordan Kunkel, Delaynie Meyer, Margaret Dolan, Dawn Wee, Jody Kruger, Blake Kruger, Caden Anderson, Michael Munson, Matt Munson, Taylor Timm and Khyle Radke.

Danika Radke said the trip helped to add an extra dimension to the friendships that exist among the youth group members.

“I am so thankful to have been able to go to Belize,” she said. “I will never forget all the things I learned, the people I met, and the way God shined through the amazing group of people that I traveled with.”
