Whether you choose to explore the historic charm of Dubrovnik and the golden sand beaches of Split or embark on an activity holiday along Croatia’s Dalmatian Coast, our selection of small group holidays to Croatia will create memories to last a lifetime. Here are some of our Croatia tour highlights.

Also known as the ‘pearl of the Adriatic' the medieval town of Dubrovnik is one of Croatia's crown jewels. Almost completely destroyed by shelling in the Siege of Dubrovnik, UNESCO and the local people gracefully restored this fortified town. With restoration, Dubrovnik retains a cheerful atmosphere and authentic charm. Wander around the city's timeworn stone walls on our Cycle the Dalmatian Coast trip for far-reaching views across a patchwork of red-terracotta roofs encased by the azure-blue ocean and jagged coastline. Step back in time as you wander through Split's maze of narrow cobblestone streets on our Croatia Discovery Tour . Discover pre-Romanesque churches, Gothic chapels and alleyways lined with rustic townhouses adorned with faded emerald-green shutters. Browse eclectic boutiques, delve into hidden galleries and stop for a bite to eat in a hole-in-the-wall cafe. Head to the seafront for a gentle stroll along the Riva Promenade and savor fresh seafood in one of the waterfront restaurants, before relaxing on the golden sand beach lapped by crystal-clear turquoise waters and playing a game of Picigin with the locals.

croatia travel group

Located on Croatia's Dalmatian Coast, Split is a captivating city that blends ancient history with a vibrant modern atmosphere. Its centerpiece is the remarkable Diocletian's Palace, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most impressive Roman ruins in existence. Split's Old Town, with its labyrinthine streets and charming squares, revolves around the palace. At the palace, visitors can explore underground passages, marvel at the grandeur of the Cathedral of St. Domnius, and soak in the enchanting ambiance. Beyond the historical allure, Split offers a bustling waterfront promenade, a thriving cultural scene, and nearby natural beauty, including Marjan Hill's panoramic views and the inviting beaches along the Adriatic Sea.

Standing in stark contrast to the Mediterranean-esque cities along the coast, the Croatian capital city of Zagreb wows with its abundance of 18th and 19th-century Austro-Hungarian buildings and architecture. Nestled between the slopes of Mount Medvednica, this cultural hub offers a wealth of architectural gems, historical landmarks, and artistic treasures. The Upper Town, with its cobblestone streets and medieval architecture, features the iconic St. Mark's Church and the impressive Zagreb Cathedral. The Lower Town boasts lively squares, bustling markets, and vibrant café culture. Zagreb also houses an array of world-class museums, showcasing art, history, and science.

Plitvice Lakes National Park

Follow timber boardwalks around a labyrinth of aquamarine lakes in Plitvice National Park, Croatia's largest national park and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Sixteen lagoons of shimmering topaz water sit among lush verdant forests and cascade over steep limestone cliffs, as pearly-white spray glistens in the sunshine and rainbows beam over the veils of water pouring into the ethereal plunge pools below. These dams of limestone crystals have formed over many millennia, and new chutes frequently burst through the travertine banks, creating a plethora of over ninety waterfalls to explore in this ever-evolving landscape.

Krka National Park

Another of Croatia's most popular national parks, Krka National Park is located in southern Croatia. It is renowned for its series of breathtaking waterfalls, including the iconic Skradinski Buk, which tumbles over a series of travertine barriers.  The park's lush greenery and crystal-clear turquoise waters create a picturesque setting that feels like something out of a fairytale. Visitors can explore the park's network of wooden walkways and hiking trails, immersing themselves in the tranquility of nature while enjoying the captivating sights and sounds of rushing waterfalls and diverse wildlife.

Dalmatian Coast and Dalmatian Islands

Sail between sun-soaked islands, swim in beautiful bays of crystal-clear water and wander through historic cities of red-roofed buildings and grand monuments along the Dalmatian Coast. The southernmost stretch of coastline along Croatia's Adriatic Coast, the Dalmatian Coast is home to several of Croatia's most legendary cities, Dubrovnik and Split, as well as 79 scenic islands that you can hopscotch between on an island-hopping adventure. The Dalmatian Islands, scattered along the coast, provide an idyllic escape with their pristine beaches, secluded coves, and quaint fishing villages. Hvar Island is famous for its vibrant nightlife, stunning lavender fields, and elegant Venetian architecture. Korčula Island, the birthplace of the legendary explorer Marco Polo, enchants visitors with its charming old town and vineyards.

English is widely spoken in Croatia, especially in popular areas like Dubrovnik, making it easy to talk with locals and navigate the country. However, it's always polite to learn some basic words and phrases of Croatian, both to be respectful of the locals and to aid in better communication. Even if you're on a guided tour, picking up some beginner Croatian phrases helps you better connect with the local culture.

Five days to a week is usually enough to do all the highlights, plus have some free time, in a particular region or city. But if you plan to explore multiple regions in one trip, you'll likely want to plan for up to two weeks of travel.

For visits of under 90 days as a tourist, you don't need to get a visa to come to Croatia as a US citizen.

As a small country, it's easy to get around Croatia using its well-connected public transit system of buses, ferries, and trains. Ferry routes are a popular way to get between coastal islands and travel along the coast, while buses and trains connect most of the country. Croatia's compact size also means you can thoroughly explore entire regions by foot or bike on a walking tour or a cycling tour. If traveling with Explore, all of your local transportation is included in the trip cost unless otherwise specified.

Traveling with a small-group tour, you can forget about the logistics and planning of travel and just get to enjoy the experience. With a small group size to preserve the intimate, personal nature of bespoke tours, you'll have a designated guide on-hand to help you discover all that Croatia has to offer.

With accommodations, activities, and transportation all arranged, you'll also have a seamless and smooth travel experience. Finally, you have the opportunity to make lifelong friends on small-group trips, creating unforgettable memories with people that go from strangers to close friends in a matter of days.

Apart from minor theft and pickpocketing in major cities, Croatia is a very safe country for all kinds of travelers. Violent crime rates are extremely low, and you'll encounter welcoming and kind locals throughout the country.

Currently, you don't need to show proof of vaccination or a negative COVID-19 test to travel to Croatia. However, masks are still required in some indoor public spaces.

Walking and Cycling Tours: • Comfortable hiking or cycling shoes • Activity-appropriate clothing (cycling kit, hiking pants, etc.) • Clothing layers • Waterproof jacket • Sun protection (hat, sunscreen, sunglasses, etc.)

Cultural and Food Tours: • Season-appropriate clothing (warm layers for winter, cool lightweight clothing for summer) • Comfortable walking shoes • Layers (jackets, fleeces, etc.) • Waterproof jacket • Sun protection (hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, etc.)

The specifics of what is included vary from tour to tour, but accommodation and some excursions and activities are included across the board. On our guided tours, one of Explore's expert tour leaders will be with you every step of the way, offering guided activities and information. Included meals vary by itinerary.

Our Croatia walking and cycling tours range in difficulty from easy to moderate, requiring a good level of health and fitness. Some hikes and cycling routes will have elevation gains, but nothing too strenuous. For cycling tours, you also have the option to choose an e-bike for a power assist.

Travel Tips for Your Croatia Trip

When is the best time to visit croatia.

Summer is the most popular season but the shoulder season months of April to May and September to October are the best times to visit Croatia.

During these months, the weather is warm and inviting around the county, and the temperature is perfect for sightseeing in the larger cities, enjoying the islands, and the major sites have fewer crowds. May and September are great months for visiting the beaches around popular coastal cities like Dubrovnik, Hvar, and Split .

While April and May or September and October are our favorite months, Croatia offers year-round possibilities with great reasons to visit in summer or winter . Whether traveling as a family to Dubrovnik in August or visiting the Istrian Peninsula during truffle season, our guide on the best time to visit Croatia will help you find the right time of year for your trip.

Where should I visit in Croatia?

From the charming towns of the Istrian Peninsula to the famous coastlines of the Dalmatian Islands, Croatia has no shortage of exceptional places to explore. Here are a few of the best places to visit in Croatia :

  • Zagreb: Modern culture pulses around Croatia’s capital city of Zagreb where historic European architecture meets world-class museums and bustling sidewalk cafes.
  • Split: Dramatic mountains and the colorful Adriatic Sea border Split, highlighting the opulent Venetian architecture, Byzantine adornments, and Austrian glamour where you can peel back the layers of history.
  • Dubrovnik : As one of the most famous cities in Croatia, the impressive city walls, Baroque architecture crowned with orange rooftop tiles, and surrounding turquoise water make Dubrovnik feel timeless.
  • Rovinj: Classic Venetian opulence and the charm of traditional seaside homes add to the beauty of Rovinj’s setting surrounded on three sides by the Adriatic Sea. From the countryside to medieval lanes, Rovinj is a relaxing place to visit in Croatia.

What should I do in Croatia?

From walking the walls of Dubrovnik to a museum tour of Zagreb, Istrian truffles to Hvar beaches, here are some of the things to do in Croatia :

  • Enjoy a food tour to find regional flavors around the country
  • Sample the different wines celebrating nearly 65 distinct grape types special to Croatia
  • Take a private cooking class to learn how to prepare authentic local dishes
  • Embrace the unique terrain on hiking trails to find vistas and historic ruins
  • Discover incredible cycling routes great for riders of all ages and experience

What should I see in Croatia?

Whether visiting a UNESCO site or touring a unique museum, there are many fascinating landmarks and attractions to see on your Croatia trip. Here are some of our favorite things to see in Croatia:

  • Bell Tower Of Saint Domnius, Split
  • Dioceltian’s Palace, Split
  • Pula Arena, Pula
  • Dubrovnik City Walls, Dubrovnik
  • Trakoscan Castle, Bednja
  • St. Mark’s Church, Zagreb
  • St. James Cathedral, Šibenik
  • Sea Organ, Zadar
  • Rovinj Old Town. Rovinj
  • Plitvice Lakes National Park, Plitvice

What is Croatia known for?

Croatia is known for its beaches, islands, and the preserved medieval city of Dubrovnik. Travelers visit from all over the world to explore the lush valleys and truffles from the Istria Peninsula as well as witness the stunning display of the past found in Roman ruins, Venetian palaces, and Ottoman minarets. From wine to exquisite seafood, you can experience Croatia’s flavors, the stunning seaside, historical monuments, and more on a Croatia trip.

Does Croatia have nice beaches?

Croatia’s beaches are stunning and famous for their feeling of luxury and glamour on the Mediterranean. The combination of long mainland shores and plentiful islands provides stunning access to popular, remote, and hidden beaches similar to those in Greece. Here are some of our best beaches in Croatia that you can visit on your trip:

  • Strusinska, Solta Island
  • Murvica, Brac Island
  • Sakarun, Dugi Otok
  • Prapratno Beach, Peljesac
  • Bacvice, Split
  • Pokrivenik, Hvar Island
  • Vela Przina, Korcula
  • Punta Rata, Brela

Which Croatian islands should I visit?

The Croatian islands are known for their beauty, where the emerald water meets pebbled shorelines, and friendly towns offer a mix of delicious food and a welcoming ambiance.

Island hopping in Croatia is a popular way to explore the array of natural colors rising out of the water, with homes painted with pastels, hillsides carpeted in grapevines or pine trees, and gorgeous beaches providing the perfect place for families or couples. Here are our top Croatian islands to visit on vacation:

What are the best food experiences in Croatia?

Croatia’s food is fresh and local, giving every dish tremendous flavor focused on simple ingredients. Often compared to Italian cuisine in its use of limited components to make every element sing, when planning to travel to Croatia, consider these top authentic food experiences for your trip:

  • Search for truffles and sample their earthy flavor on a truffle-hunting tour of Istria
  • Enjoy the decadent flavor and texture of oysters with a tasting in Ston
  • Sample the delicious variety of olive oils with a tasting and comparison in Istria
  • Learn the art and minute flavorful differences of quality prosciutto in Drnis
  • Explore the methods for bee-keeping and making honey in Solta
  • Discover the unique art of aging wine in the sea when visiting Drače
  • Follow one of Croatia’s celebrated wine routes

What are your most popular Croatia itineraries?

The best Croatia itinerary for you will focus on your preferences and interests while uncovering new experiences.

Every traveler is different, and your ideas on what makes a perfect trip will differ from other travelers. You may, for example, wish to spend time on a private yacht cruising between the Dalmatian Islands. Or perhaps you are interested in traveling between major cities like Dubrovnik, Split, and Zagreb.

Whether you prefer to lounge on the island beaches or sample the enticing regional flavors of Istria, walk along the lakes of Plitvice National Park, or visit the home of Marco Polo, our best Croatia itineraries allow you to customize each day of your journey to create your perfect trip.

Is This Croatia Trip Right for You?

  • You will be doing a lot of walking on this trip oftentimes on uneven surfaces like cobblestones and up/down hills.
  • You will be staying in private apartments through this trip. Front desk reception, room service, daily cleaning and breakfast are therefore not provided. The apartments are all very clean, safe and in great, central locations.
  • Peak tourism in Croatia occurs in July and August where the crowds can be large (especially in Old Town Dubrovnik). Further, temperatures are at peak during that time of the year reaching into the 90s and above especially in Dubrovnik and Hvar.

Frequently Asked Questions

The group leader on this Croatia trip will be one of our U.S. or European based group leaders. His/her job is to ensure the safety and well being of everyone on the trip and, of course, to show everyone the most amazing time ever! While he/she will have a basic knowledge of the history, culture and customs of Croatia he/she is not an expert in the matter.

A passport is required for this Croatia group trip. While your passport must have at least 3 months validity from the time you leave Croatia it is strongly recommended that your passport have at least 6 months validity to avoid any problems. If you hold a U.S. passport you will not need a visa for entry to Croatia as long as you are not staying more than 90 days (during a 6 month period starting from the day of first entry). Please note that Croatia is a member of the European Union but it is not a member of the Schengen area.

You will be staying in private apartments for the duration of this Croatia group trip. Locals rent out large family apartments as an important part of the tourism economy of Croatia during the summer months. The apartments we use are all clean, safe, and have modern touches but please understand that the infrastructure of the buildings themselves can be dated and old. As these are private apartments there is no front reception, daily housekeeping or room service. All the apartments have WiFi and air conditioning. Most of the apartments are studio style meaning there is a private ensuite bathroom in each apartment. In some instances apartments might have shared bathrooms amongst different rooms in which case we try to keep the bathroom to room ratio no less than 2 bathrooms for every 3 rooms. We try to keep the apartments all in one building but this is impossible if the group size is large; in instances like these the group will be spread across 2 or 3 different buildings but all will be within about a 5 minute walk from one another. The apartments are always rented out exclusively for Travendly so you will never share an apartment with someone not on the trip.

The locations for the apartments are all excellent – centrally located directly in the the city center. In Split the apartments are in the city center, about a 5 minute walk to the entrance to Diocletian’s Palace. In Hvar the apartments are in Hvar Town, about a 10 minute walk to the Cathedral of Saint Stephen. In Dubrovnik the apartments are in the Old Town where you are literally a 5/10 minute walk from everything. Game of Thrones fans: in Dubrovnik the apartments are about a 5 minute walk from the filming location of the Walk of Shame and about a 10 minute walk from the filming location of the Red Keep.

In order to budget properly please consider the following items which are not included in this Croatia group trip:

  • Meals: You are responsible for 8 breakfasts, 7 lunches and 6 dinners. Budget around $325 for meals not included.
  • Local drivers, guides and restaurant staff: Tipping is not compulsory but can make a big difference to individuals in the local hospitality industry in Croatia. Therefore, we recommend budgeting around $50 for these services.
  • Group leader: Tipping your group leader is completely discretionary. For outstanding service you may consider tipping your group leader ~$10/day.
  • Transportation: Airport transfers are not included. If you plan on taking the airport bus please budget ~$5 for the Split transfer and ~$6 for the Dubrovnik transfer. If you plan on taking a taxi to/from the airport please budget ~$30 for the Split transfer and ~$30 for the Dubrovnik transfer.
  • Travel insurance: Travel insurance covering our minimum requirements ($100k+ in medical coverage including emergency evacuation) is compulsory for all participants. Budget anywhere from $50 to $130 for travel insurance (from a 3rd party) depending on your specific coverage inclusions.

The single room supplement on this Croatia trip is $599. You will be able to select your preference for a single room supplement when filling out the application. If you are applying for this trip within 3 months of the departure please contact us for single room availability before applying. Please be advised that due to the accommodations on this trip (i.e. private apartments) you might have a shared bathroom (depending on the configuration of the apartment) but you will definitely have your own bedroom.

Upon arrival in Split/Dubrovnik you will take a taxi/bus directly to the apartments where your group leader will be waiting for you! After getting checked-in you will have free time until around 6pm upon which you will meet the group at the apartments. Then you will walk to a nearby spot for drinks/dinner as you begin to get to know one another! While you will not physically meet your group mates until the evening of the first day you will be in contact with everyone well ahead of time in the group WhatsApp chat and, in addition, we will provide you with everyone’s traveler bios so you’ll already know each other a little before physically meeting!

On day 3 (in Split) and day 8 (in Dubrovnik) you will have the opportunity to tailor the trip to your style by selecting an optional excursion. You will be able to select the optional excursion during the application process and, after, you’ll be sent an invoice to pay.

Day 3 (Split):

  • ATVing: 110€
  • Cooking class: 145€

Day 8 (Dubrovnik):

  • Kayaking: 45€

You can read more about the optional excursions here .

We recommend bringing a combination of cash and credit/ATM card (assuming your credit card does not have foreign transaction fees). You will be able to use a credit card (Visa or Mastercard) at many shops and restaurants in Croatia but it’s good to have a cash reserve as a backup in case the card machine is not working or if a restaurant is cash only. ATMs are readily available but withdrawal limits and transaction fees could occur.

You may bring any size luggage that you wish though we recommend packing as lite as possible since you will be traveling a lot during this trip (staying in 3 different apartments). Further, please note that you will need to walk up to 10 minutes with your bag in Dubrovnik (from the point of taxi drop off to the apartment location) as you will be staying in the Old Town (of Dubrovnik) where cars are not allowed.

Yes, you will have WiFi access at all the apartments and most restaurants.

In Split and Hvar you will have plenty of nightlife options: wine and cocktail bars, outside party themed bars, and clubs. Dubrovnik has a more laid back nightlife scene with the primary focus being low key and wine bars. The decision to go out at night or not is completely up to you!

Upon arrival in Split you will either take the bus or a taxi to the apartment. The bus is most cost effective as it’s only 30 Kuna and you get dropped off just about 10 minute walk from the apartments; we will provide you with detailed instructions (via your trip documents) on how to take the bus. Alternatively, you can easily take a taxi. Further, you could also share a taxi with other participants on your trip by coordinating through the group WhatsApp chat.

There are 2 ferries and 1 boating day on this Croatia group travel trip. While the sea is generally calm during the summer (when our Croatia trips run) it’s impossible to guarantee it. Therefore, if you get seasick easily this might not be the best trip for you. However, if you only get mildly sea sick we recommend consulting with your doctor to discuss possible seasick remedies such as medication or patches.

What Clients Say

The best place in NYC to buy airline tickets. I buy my tickets here. Boris is the best is the business. I agree with the other 2 reviews. Great service, great pricing, and you are dealing with someone who has been to around 200 countries, so the man knows what he is talking about.

My family and I wouldn’t even consider using another agency to book our travel to Croatia… let alone the internet! Think about it – by using an experienced agent, you’ll save money on airfare and get personalized customer service. Croatia or bust! They’ll also hook up your travel plans to anywhere in Europe.

I have been excellently served with this agency and its agents were caring and professional. They took all the stress away when booking our honeymoon in. Would definitely recommend this place to any of my friends for booking their next trip.

THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! Had to make emergency changes to my mom’s travel plans recently. CTA was so helpful! Especially INA !!! Assisting me on a Saturday night & Sunday morning, even when the office was closed. You went above & beyond! HVALA

I want to thank you for the travel arrangements you made for us as we traveled to meet our bike tour group. We had a wonderful time.  All of us were in awe of Istria’s natural beauty.  I had heard that it is beautiful, but it is spectacular!

We THANK YOU again for your work!

6 Of the Best Small Group Tours to Croatia, Even for Solo Travellers!

Croatia is a phenomenal country with no less than 21 national parks and nature reserves that equate to about 10% of the country, plus the 1246 islands and an abundance of photogenic medieval towns.

I’ve visited Croatia on three different occasions, each time to a different region.  As much as I love Croatia, I did find it challenging at times as an independent traveller being reliant on public transport. Although solo travel in Croatia is fine between the major cities, it wasn’t as easy getting to some of the more off-the-beaten-track places and away from the crowds.

With so many stunning places to explore, you might be thinking of joining one of the small group tours to Croatia. There are loads of great options out there, it can be difficult to choose which one to go for.

If you’re a solo traveller , you may be all too familiar with this huge pet peeve of mine; most tour companies will charge their unfair ‘single supplement’ fee.

Best Small Group Tours to Croatia

I wanted an easier way to explore more off-the-beaten-track places and to make the most of my limited vacation time, but I was also only interested in using companies that didn’t have this annoying solo traveller fee.

In this article, I delve into the best small group tours of Croatia that not only have a great reputation but tick that vital box of no single supplement charge. So, if you’re having the same dilemma as I was, then check out these awesome Croatia group trip ideas.

Which Are the Best Solo Travel Companies?

There are dozens of Croatia tour companies out there, however, when I was searching for the best travel companies for solo travellers, it was frustrating to find so many that had this annoyig single supplement charge.

Because I was travelling to Croatia alone, this was a big contender in which company I opted for. The best companies I found for small group adventure travel, that didn’t charge for solos were:

  • G Adventures
  • Intrepid Travel

What Are Small Group Tour Companies Really Like?

My idea of hell are those great big coaches, you know the ones, where you’re stuck in a group of 60 people or more. They drop you off at an attraction and then you’re herded about like cattle. I was not interested in spending my precious travel time like that, and if you’re reading this article, I’m sure you feel the same way.

Like I mentioned before, sometimes, doing solo overland travel can be difficult outside of towns. I could hire a car, but then when you’re on your own, it’s not that cost-effective. That’s why I started using small group tour companies, like the ones I’ve mentioned, to get around this problem.

If I’m on a longer trip, then typically I’d travel solo for a large chunk of it, and then join a group tour for a week or so to explore areas in more depth where it would be a logistical nightmare to plan myself. It’s also nice to have someone do the planning for a few days and not need to think too much – I am on vacation after all.

Out of the companies I listed above, my favourite of the three is G Adventures tours. For me, Contiki is a little more about the partying vibe, and the quality of the accommodation isn’t quite as good as on G Adventures and Intrepid Travel.

G Adventures is the one I keep going back to, and I’ve done several trips with them now (you can read about the epic Inca Trail tour in Peru I did with them here). Their group sizes are super small, which for me, is a big selling point. They also focus a bit more on ethical travel as well as some more off-the-beaten-track places.

Croatia group travel tours faqs.

Here are some frequently asked questions about doing these small group tours of Croatia. If I’ve not answered your question here, then drop a comment below.

Who are G Adventures?

G adventures are Canadian-based travel company that focuses on ethical small group travel experiences. Their full name is GAP adventures, which is an acronym for Great Adventure People. Their GAP adventures Croatia tours are some of the best out there.

Why Choose a G Adventures Croatia Tour?

G Adventures have set the bar insanely high when it comes to choosing the best trips in Croatia. True, there are plenty of other small group tour companies out there, I mentioned Contiki and Intrepid Travel already, and there are loads more. However, not many Croatia tour packages have the perks that these three do ….no single supplement being the main one.

With the standard set so high (I’ve not had a single shoddy tour with G Adventures), I’m always reluctant to use anyone else. I have tried other companies in the past, but they never quite seem to be as good. Don’t just take my word for it, ask anyone who’s used G Adventures.

  • Offer the most genuine experiences
  • Work with local guides with insider knowledge, who know the region inside out
  • They only offer small group tours, and they know how to do this well
  • They are ethically driven (check out their Planeterra foundation where they give back to the locals)
  • They’ve got a really solid and generous Covid Policy
  • and my favourite, they cater to travel alone tours …..they won’t penalise you for being a solo traveller!
  • See All G Adventures Croatia Tours

What about the Contiki and Intrepid Travel Croatia Tour?

These are both equally as robust and great companies for solo tour groups.

If you’re younger or on more of a budget, then Contiki Tours is a great option. They definitely have a more party vibe going on, they are also slightly cheaper, but their groups are larger and they don’t use quite as good quality accommodation.

Contiki cater for a more of a typical backpacker crowd, which is great if you’re travelling solo, want to meet people of your own age and see a load of stuff. They don’t charge for solo travel, group tours work by buddying you up with another solo traveller of the same gender.

G Adventures and Intrepid are similar in how their solo traveller option works, but are also a great option if you are travelling as a family with slightly older children, as long as they are accompanied by an adult.

Both of these companies attract people looking for a more cultured experience. Intrepid Travel offers similar tours to G Adventures, but I’ve always found them a bit more expensive.

52 Beautiful Pictures of Dubrovnik to give you wanderlust. Photos of Croatia Old City Walls, UNESCO sites, Game of Thrones Locations & the Azure Sea.

How many people are on these Croatia group tours?

It varies on the company and the type of tour. I particularly love G Adventures for this aspect, the largest group is 16, and on average, it’s around 12 people for land-based tours. Intrepid Travel has a similar group size and they both specialise in providing small group experiences.

Contiki has the largest groups, sometimes up to 30, but this is also reflected in them being slightly cheaper compared to Intrepid Travel and G Adventures. Although they can be smaller depending on the limitations of the transport, such as minivan size.

What’s the typical age on these Croatia group tours?

Contiki is definitely more geared towards a younger party crowd, they even cap their age range between 18-35. The average age is about 24

Intrepid Travel and G Aventures don’t have an upper age limit, they do have a lower age limit (from about 12 years old) so you can bring a child with you. Most of the G Adventure tours I’ve done have had a decent mix of ages, from the early 20s right up to 60somethings. It’s more about the state of mind, the 60soemthings certainly kept up with the ‘youngsters’.

G Adventures do offer a very limited range of trips aimed at the 18-30s. These are generally cheaper and the accommodation isn’t as good, and travel between destinations may be by public transport, as opposed to a private minivan.

What’s included in the price when I book Croatia group travel?

This will depend on which of the tours you choose but typically it’s your accommodation, some of your meals, the guide, transportation and entrance to attractions are included.

All of these tours have bolt-on options, so you can choose whether or not you want to do an activity. If you opt out of the bolt-ons, when these activities happen, you get some free time to explore on your own or do a different included activity with the group.

It’s also worth knowing that all three companies offer some great last-minute deals. Check out the latest last minute deals from G Adventures here so see if you can save a mini fortune.

Will I Be Penalised if I’m on a Solo Trip to Croatia?

This is one of the things I put as a priority when I look at any group tour. The single supplement, to me, is just so unethical as I’m being penalised for travelling solo. If you intend to travel Croatia solo and join a tour part way through, this should also be something to bear in mind.

All three of these Croatia group holidays will never charge you a single supplement. In most cases, they will just buddy you up in the accommodation with another traveller of the same gender.

If you are really adamant about having your own space, you can pay extra for it, but this is purely optional and you’ll have to request this option at the time of booking.

How Much Extra Money Do I Need to Take on These Croatia Small Group Tours?

Naturally, this is going to vary, depending on your spending style. If you want fancy bottles of wine with every meal, then sure you will spend more, the same goes for any extra excursions you might want to do.

As an average amount, allow for around $25 per day and some extra for tips. If you’re a frugal spender, then you’ll come home with change from that.

What if I have dietary needs?

When you book any of these group tours to Croatia, you’ll be asked this question and they will be able to cater for you.

I’m a vegetarian and my food request has always been met, sometimes my non-veggie travel buddies even have food envy.

At the beginning of the tour, they will always ask this question again to double-check what each person’s needs are.

Are there any specific Croatia tours for singles?

If you mean Croatia singles trip like dating, then err no. If you want to meet people of a similar age, then Contiki Tours is geared up to this a little more, but strictly speaking, none of these tours are exclusively for singles.

Is it easy to travel around Croatia alone?

If you’re worried about Croatia solo travel, it’s straightforward, affordable and with regular services between the major towns and cities. It does, however, become more challenging when you want to get away from the bustle of the city.

I’ve found the best prices for travel between the main cities on either Omio App , or via Flixbus .

Am I safe to travel around Croatia solo?

If you’re travelling Croatia solo you might be worried about safety. On the whole, Croatia, like most of the rest of Europe, is very safe. The most likely problem will be pickpockets in busy places, but even that isn’t a problem if you’re sensible.

Some Croatia solo travel tips are:

  • Tell your accommodation where you’re going, if you’re exploring off-the-beaten-track places or hiking in the mountains
  • Take a day pack, with snacks, water, two methods of payment (eg cash and a credit card) and ID with you.
  • Store the name and contact details of your accommodation on your phone, so if you’re lost, you can ask for directions.

Which of These Small Group Tours to Croatia Are You Going On?

So, I’ve given you six of the best Croatia group trips. Are you like me, and going to opt for a Croatia G Adventures tour, or are you more of a party animal, and prefer the sound of the Contiki Croatia tour?

Croatia solo tours

Aerial view of Dubrovnik

Got no one to cruise the dazzling Dalmatian Coast, share succulent seafood or explore Dubrovnik’s ancient Old Town with? No worries.

Our small group tours in  Croatia  are ideal for solo travellers looking for kindred spirits to share the journey with. With a legendary leader to show you local hidden hangouts and handle all the nitty-gritty details (like booking ferry tickets and accommodation), you'll get to focus on the fun stuff. From  island hopping  to waterfall chasing, lunching with local families to olive oil tasting, Croatia is best enjoyed with (new) friends.

Let's create an exclusive trip for your group.

When you're travelling solo, you might not feel comfortable stepping off the well-trodden tourist trail. But it's a different story when you're with us. With an expert local leader to introduce you to locals and show you the highlights and hidden gems – like ancient olive groves and hidden coves perfect for snorkelling – you'll get under the skin of Croatia and have heaps of amazing stories to take home with you.

Croatia is generally a safe country for travellers, but pickpocketing and scams can happen. Our leaders know how to haggle at markets, which areas to avoid after dark, and will help you stay safe and get the most out of your trip. And remember, you'll be part of a group! Which means a bunch of new friends to watch your back (and your stuff). It’s all the freedom of solo travel, but with an added safety net so you can focus on enjoying yourself.

The average Intrepid trip has roughly ten people on it – people of all ages and backgrounds. So, while you might be travelling solo, you'll never be alone. This means you’ve got a ready-made crew to peruse local markets, share delicious meals at dinner and chat with over a crisp glass of Pošip. If you like getting to know fellow travellers as well as a destination, it’s a nice perk to have.

With 30 years of experience under our belt, we've learned a thing or two when it comes to travel. We know how to get you from A to B smoothly, the best hotels and restaurants to visit (and the ones to avoid), and we'll take care of all the logistics and housekeeping so you don’t have to worry. Bring your enthusiasm (and a camera!) and we'll handle the rest.

Will I have my own room?

It’s completely up to you. On our trips, rooming is organized on a twin-share basis, and we pair up solo travelers with another traveler of the same gender as per the gender marker on each of their passports. But if you'd like your own room, an individual room is available on the majority of our trips (it’s just a small extra charge). Just mention this to our  customer service team  when booking your trip and they'll arrange it for you.

As a responsible tour operator, we strive to create a safe and inclusive environment for everyone. In the case that your gender identity differs from what is indicated on your passport, please  contact us  so that we can discuss rooming options with you.

On a small selection of itineraries some accommodations are booked on an open gender, multi-share basis (for example on a felucca in Egypt or an overnight train in Vietnam). In those instances it will clearly be stated in our Essential Trip Information prior to booking and traveling.

How does group time work?

Whether you’re traveling solo or with a partner, our trips have a set itinerary. But within that there’s time set aside for your own exploration (if you want to – no pressure). The amount of free time depends on the  travel style  - you can ask your guide for a few tips then head out alone, or hang out with the group and see where the day takes you.

Do I need to purchase travel insurance before traveling?

Absolutely. All passengers traveling with Intrepid are required to purchase travel insurance before the start of their trip. Your travel insurance details will be recorded by your leader on the first day of the trip. Due to the varying nature, availability and cost of health care around the world, travel insurance is very much an essential and necessary part of every journey.

For more information on insurance, please go to: Travel Insurance

Are credit cards accepted widely in Croatia?

Large hotels, restaurants and tourist sites will most likely accept credit cards. Always carry enough cash for smaller purchases and when shopping at vendors like market stalls and smaller cafes and hotels, which may not have credit card facilities.

Is Croatia accessible for travellers with disabilities?

Intrepid is committed to making travel widely accessible, regardless of ability or disability. That’s why we do our best to help as many people see the world as possible, regardless of any physical or mental limitations they might have. We’re always happy to talk to travellers with disabilities and see if we can help guide them towards the most suitable itinerary for their needs and, where possible, make reasonable adjustments to our itineraries.

How to stay safe while traveling solo

Share your itinerary

Good advice for us all, but particularly for people traveling solo. Make copies of your itinerary, contact details, passport and travel insurance, then email them to yourself and to one or two friends/family at home. Check-in on social media when you can so people can keep track of where you are.

Remember the little things

If you’re arriving late in a city by yourself, book a hotel with a front desk or concierge service (many hotels also offer private transfers that don’t cost the earth from the airport or train station).

If you're traveling with us, we can help you organize an  arrival transfer.  Read your maps before you head out for a walk (you can use a map app on your smartphone – or take screenshots of where you’re going if you don’t want to use up your precious data). If you need to check your map when you’re out and about, duck into a shop or café to do it.

Leave the blingy jewelry, wedding rings and designer clothes at home, and aim to dress like the locals do – hit up the local markets if you haven’t packed the right outfits. Aim to keep track of travel times, so you’re not caught out after dark.

Roam if you want to

Most mobile/cell providers now offer travel passes to help manage your international roaming costs (which, let’s face it, are expensive!).

For a few dollars a day, you’ll have access to data, which means you can log into your apps (like Skype, email and WhatsApp) when you’re out of WiFi zones and quickly get in touch with someone – a friend at home, someone in your group, or the police – if you need to.

It might also be worth checking out the local cell/mobile providers as these can be quite cost effective.

Fare's fair

Solo travelers are way more likely to be ‘taken for a ride’ at the airport by unscrupulous taxi drivers, so do your research before you arrive. Make sure you get a cab from the airport/station taxi rank – if you’re not sure where to go, just head to the information desk for help.

Touts tend to hang out in the arrivals area and promise cheaper rates, but can often be dodgy. When you get to the cab rank, ask the driver to use the meter or request a cost estimate before you hop in the car – if it’s way higher than it should be, pick another vehicle.

A lot of airports have train stations attached as well, so consider public transport if you want to save a dollar or two.

Stick together

It’s one of the advantages of travelling solo on a group tour: safety in numbers. The big, 50-person bus groups stand out on the road, but a small  Intrepid group  of eight or nine people, with a local leader showing the way – including areas to avoid and getting around safely – won’t draw much attention.

Plus, it’s a great way to see parts of the world you may feel uncomfortable exploring on your own. If you want to do things on your own, consider a  day tour  to familiarise yourself with a city and get to know the local way of life.

Trust your instincts

Solo travel is all about confidence. If you’re relaxed and self-assured on the street, you’re more likely to blend in. When you meet new people, don’t assume they’re all out to get you, but be sensible too and trust your gut. If it feels wrong, it probably is.

Remember: the popular tourist areas are often the most well-lit and secure, but they’re often a juicier target for pickpockets and scammers. Just use your common sense; half of travel safety is simply being aware of your surroundings.
