The first season of “The Tourist” was a clever little thriller over on Max, but that company continued its cavalcade of confusing choices and dumped the second outing, allowing the show to travel to Netflix, where it has been consistently in the top ten for the entirety of February as audiences caught up with year one. That fun season is now followed by a very twisted second one, a 6-episode outing that moves the action from Australia to Ireland—switching the title character if you think about it from one protagonist to the other—and upping the surreal, unpredictable sense of dark humor. It’s a bit of a rockier road in terms of quality, but there’s an admirable lunacy to the storytelling here that holds it together, throwing in new twists and memorable characters in a manner that’s reminiscent of prime Coen brothers, wherein one never knew what was going to happen next, and it was all darkly humorous at the same time. While Danielle Macdonald gets a little lost in the late-season emotion of this year, Jamie Dornan really holds it all together with a deceptively natural, engaging performance. It’s insane Max ever let him go.

The first season of “The Tourist” has a beautiful simplicity in its story of a man who wakes up after a car accident in the Outback with no idea of who he is or how he got there, only to discover that he may not like the guy he used to be. With so many questions answered in what could have been a self-contained season, one might wonder how they could do it again—amnesia a second time? The writers smartly move the action back to Elliot’s (Dornan) homeland in season two as he and Helen (Macdonald) travel there to learn more details about his dark past after receiving a mysterious photo. Before they even really get a pint in them, Elliot is kidnapped and thrown into the middle of a generation-spanning turf war between the families of the Cassidys and the McDonnells. The latter is led by the vicious Frank ( Francis Magee ) and the former by none other than our hero’s mother, Niamh (the excellent Olwen Fouéré ).

A season that opens by separating its heroes and sending one to a remote island where he’s kept prisoner has about a dozen other twists up its sleeve that I wouldn't dare spoil here, as that's the joy of watching the show. Everyone on “The Tourist” hides an odd secret or two, even the seemingly ordinary detective ( Conor MacNeill ), who has something insane going on in his basement. When Helen sees her potential mother-in-law commit murder in the premiere it’s just the beginning of a series of narrative turns that stress that classic suspension of disbelief. “The Tourist” is like those page-turning novels you read on a beach, wherein each chapter ends with an insane new revelation that forces you to read the next before you question if it actually makes any sense at all. It’s really the show’s strength: A sense of breakneck plotting in an era when everyone feels like every show is a few episodes too long for its threadbare plot.

If the plotting is the strength, the emotions of the second season feel a bit like a weakness at times. The love story between Helen and Elliot takes center stage in rather intense ways, and it leads to a number of heartwrenching scenes, especially in the back half, that feel overly melodramatic. “The Tourist” is at its best when it’s not taking itself very seriously, having fun with its characters. Every time it diverts to really define Helen and Elliot’s eternal love, the seams in the writing start to show, and Macdonald gets lost a few times this season in overwrought melodrama that feels unearned. Luckily, she’s balanced by a truly great Dornan performance, one that seems to be honestly responding to every loony twist thrown his way. It’s more subdued that season one, allowing him to be the center as the chaotic world spins around him.

No one really understands what the heck is going on over at Max that they keep canceling movies and dropping content—an underreported recent head scratcher was allowing “Band of Brothers” to be on Netflix while “ Masters of the Air ” was dropping on Apple, which surely reignited interest in the original Playtone production in a manner that one would think would have sent people back to Max, but whatever. Letting “The Tourist” slide over to Netflix may be low on the list of their insane decisions of late, but it’s been funny to watch it slay for the competition, and it's hard to believe that the second season won’t do exactly the same. It’s funny to consider the executives who made the decision to let “The Tourist” go watching this effective second season on Netflix themselves, probably wondering why there aren’t more shows like it on Max.

A thought-provoking mystery akin to the likes of Christopher Nolan's Memento , The Tourist hit the BBC back in January 2022, with its critical and public acclaim across the pond soon translating into praise in the US following its debut on HBO Max. A whirlwind adventure that also showcases its gorgeous Australian backdrop, it came as no surprise to many when the series was picked up for a second outing . However, Max shockingly dropped the show from their catalog, with Netflix swooping in and saving the day, providing the upcoming second season with a rightful home. With that in mind, here is a look at some of the incredible cast of characters The Tourist has to offer.

The Man/Elliot Stanley

Known initially only as The Man, The Tourist begins with this mysterious stranger ominously waking up in an Australian hospital with a severe case of amnesia. Although it soon becomes clear his real name is Elliot Stanley, the gripping puzzle surrounding his identity creates the backbone of the show as Stanley's troubled Irish past swiftly begins to catch up with him. As the series continues, Dornan becomes a pensive, steadfast action hero, although, unlike a series such as Reacher , this masculine lead is allowed the time to be vulnerable, thrusting the classic male hero into a progressive 2024 role model. In Season 2, The Man has traveled back to his home country with filming in Dublin beginning in 2023 .

With a screen career that dates back to Sofia Coppola 's Marie Antoinette in 2006, Jamie Dornan 's rise to the top has been swift, with his portrayal of Christian Grey in the Fifty Shades franchise solidifying him as a household name. Among his high-profile career to date, Dornan has starred alongside Cillian Murphy in the World War Two spy thriller Anthropoid , portrayed the spiritual precursor to Ryan Gosling's Ken in Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar , and acted opposite Gillian Anderson in the tense crime thriller The Fall . A captivating performer with an eye-catching range, Dornan is merely at the beginning of what looks to be an incredible career with many an iconic role still to come. Helen's face is the first The Man sees following his sudden awakening, with that moment cementing her as a crucial component to the enigma's journey. At the bottom of the professional ladder, Helen Chambers will stop at nothing to prove she is an expert law enforcement officer, although sometimes her dedication to her job, and specifically the case involving The Man, puts her livelihood and her marriage in jeopardy, which eventually leads to a surprising and show-stealing romance with The Man.

With a career that has only spanned just over a decade to date, Danielle McDonald has already made a name for herself, with both the public and critics alike regularly praising her impressive range of performances. From her beginning on Glee in 2011 through to American Horror Story , McDonald has delighted on the small screen, but perhaps her film work in the likes of Bird Box and Patti Cake$ showcases the best of her talents. Lena's journey in The Tourist 's first season is as unique as they come, first appearing as a vision in the dreams (or nightmares) of The Man. As time goes by, these visions become stronger and more detailed, with the puzzle of Lena's identity slowly being pieced together. By season's end, it becomes clear that Lena marks the darkest secret from The Man's past, with Season 2 likely to involve The Man's attempts at redemption.

A star of both stage and screen, the Russian-born Victoria Haralabidou has impressed immensely across a 25-year-long acting career, with highlights including the likes of Brides , The Secrets She Keeps , and The Lost Flowers of Alice Hart . In the near future, Haralabidou will be playing Jacinta Brightface in two episodes of Zombie Therapy .

Shalom Brune-Franklin

Luci miller.

Luci Miller's part in the plot of The Tourist 's first season is critical, with the waitress helping The Man piece together his past in the hope of protecting his future. However, Luci is hiding secrets of her own, with her growing bond with The Man soon seeming to have an ulterior motive. Sadly, Luci's involvement in the story is limited to just the first season, but her influence on the second season's plot shouldn't be underestimated.

A young actress with the world at her feet, Shalom Brune-Franklin , although she has a cameo role in Thor: Ragnarok , is best known for her work on television. Whether it's The Tourist , Doctor Doctor , Bad Mothers , or Line of Duty , Shalom never looks out of place alongside actors twice her age, with her future certainly looking bright.

Greg Larsen

Ethan Krum is the fiancée of Helen Chambers and symbolizes the familial cost of the young policewoman's dedication to her profession. A patient and kind man at heart, and never far from a moment of absurdist comic relief, watching Ethan slowly lose faith in the woman he loves is heartbreaking, with The Tourist 's dedication to showcasing both the mystery at its center and the ripple effects of such a tough task one of its best features. Interestingly, despite Helen and The Man now being a romantic item, Ethan is confirmed to appear in Season 2.

Perhaps the most experienced actor in The Tourist 's talented cast, Greg Larsen is a legendary Australian performer with a back catalog that includes the likes of Hug the Sun , How Not to Behave , and Young Rock .

France 2 propose un voyage inattendu en plein coeur de l'Australie dès ce lundi 20 juin à 21h10 grâce à son excellente série The Tourist . Télé-Loisirs vous révèle pourquoi il ne faut surtout pas louper cette fiction.

France 2 propose une nouvelle série inédite ce lundi 20 juin à 21h10 : The Tourist dont l'intégralité des six épisodes sont d'ores et déjà disponibles sur la plateforme SVOD Salto. L'histoire ? Jamie Dornan ( The Fall, 50 nuances de Grey ) qui a récemment perdu son papa, y prête vie avec talent à un homme amnésique obligé d'arpenter l'Australie profonde pour tenter de retrouver son identité. Au risque de se rendre compte qu’il n’était pas forcément un individu bien sous tous rapports et qu’il y a certains pans de son existence qu’il préférerait sans doute oublier. Un road-movie qui risque de surprendre les téléspectateurs des polars plus traditionnels que le service public propose d'ordinaire le lundi soir. Mais ils auraient tort de bouder cette fiction qui se révèle assez exceptionnelle.

The Tourist tire ses références de films tels que Duel ou Memento

Le scénario de The Tourist n'hésite pas à prendre pour référence un film tel que Duel , qui a lancé la carrière de Steven Spielberg (qui a raconté les dessous de son West Side Story ) à l'époque, ou bien à Memento , le long métrage de Christopher Nolan . La série se révèle véritablement retorse et haletante, multipliant les rebondissements sans jamais se prendre au sérieux. Si elle peut, ici ou là, proposer quelques plans violents, elle le fait un peu à la manière d'une bande-dessinée humoristique où on tuerait plus par mégarde qu'intentionnellement. Les décors dépaysants à souhait se révèlent aussi âpres et rugueux que peuvent l’être la plupart des protagonistes. La série est de bout en bout une vraie réussite.

Une très belle distribution menée par Jamie Dornan

Les acteurs de The Tourist y sont tous particulièrement crédibles. Depuis Jamie Dornan jusqu'à Danielle Macdonald ( Unbelievable , Bird Box ) en passant par Alex Dimitriades que les fans de la première heure de Hartley coeurs à vif seront ravis de retrouver dans la peau d'un beau salaud. Shalom Brune-Franklin, vue dans l'excellente Line of Duty , ou Olafur Darri Olafsson, l'acteur islandais de Trapped , viennent compléter la distribution. Tous incarnent des personnages hauts en couleurs qui se découvrent à nous touche après touche.

The Tourist series two is a Two Brothers Pictures (an All3Media company) production for the BBC, in association with Stan, ZDF and All3Media International created and written by Harry and Jack Williams (The Missing, Baptiste, Fleabag). Fergus O’Brien (Happy Valley, Gentleman Jack) directs the opening block with Johann Perry (Happy Valley, Gentleman Jack) as DOP, while Lisa Mulcahy (Blood, Years and Years) and Kate Dolan (Kin, You Are Not My Mother) direct block two and three respectively.

Alex Mercer (Inside Man, Crossfire) is producer, with Louise Kiely (The Banshees of Inisherin, Normal People) as casting director. Executive producers are Harry and Jack Williams, Daniel Walker and Sarah Hammond for Two Brothers Pictures, with Nawfal Faizullah for the BBC, and Jamie Dornan.

The Tourist season 2: US release date, cast, plot and more

The Tourist season 2 sees Jamie Dornan return as Elliot as the story comes to Ireland.

Jamie Dornan fans will be delighted that The Tourist season 2 is finally here, with the whole series now available to watch on BBC iPlayer in the UK and Netflix in the US.

With the action switching from Australia's Outback to Ireland, the landscape looks very different from when we last saw Elliot. But whether he's running away from some mysterious pursuers or covered in blood, his situation doesn't seem to have improved too much!  

Teasing the new series, Jamie says: "For the second series we pick up with Elliot in Ireland where he tries to discover his real family and get some answers on who he is. Whilst Elliot is in Ireland, he also gets caught up in all kinds of craziness with people trying to kill him."

He adds: "Family is a big theme in this series. We're dealing with a guy who has no concept of who he is, and you can only imagine how terrifying that is, but little by little there are these kernels of information revealed to him and he starts to piece his history together and his family history. It's not that pretty, but it's vital and it's a big part of our story."

Screenwriters Jack and Harry Williams — whose previous screenwriting hits include The Missing and One of Us — have penned the scripts of the follow-up series.

The Tourist season 1 was a big hit when it launched on BBC One and the iPlayer last January, with 12 million people watching it in the first 30 days it was available online. It then went on to have similar success on HBO for US fans. Here's everything we know about season 2...

The Tourist season 2 release date

The Tourist season 2 premiered on BBC One on Monday 1 January 2024 at 9 pm. The second episode follows on Tuesday 2 January on BBC One at 9 pm. Subsequent episodes air on consecutive Sundays throughout January. The whole series is available now as a box set on BBC iPlayer. 

The Tourist season 1 was broadcast on HBO Max in the United States, but it has moved to Netflix for the second season, with all the episodes available to stream from 29 February 2024. 

The Tourist season 2 plot

The first series started with "The Man" — whose name was revealed to be Elliot — waking up in Australia with total amnesia before he and Constable Helen Chambers (Danielle Macdonald) became embroiled in a cat-and-mouse game with mysterious figures chasing them across Australia. 

The new series sees Helen accompanying Elliot back to Ireland as he tries to rediscover his roots, where they soon find themselves dragged into the dangerous whirlwind of his past life. An official synopsis reads...

"After their adventure in the Australian Outback, The Tourist’s epic second series follows Dornan and Macdonald’s characters Elliot and Helen as they travel to Ireland together. 

"In an attempt to rediscover Elliot’s roots following his memory loss, they’re dragged into the dangerous whirlwind of his past life and are confronted by friends and foes both old and new, including Niamh Cassidy (Olwen Fouéré) and the McDonnell family – Donal (Diarmaid Murtagh), Orla (Nessa Matthews), Fergal (Mark McKenna), and Frank (Francis Magee). 

"Detective Ruairi Slater (Conor MacNeill) becomes embroiled in the crossfire between the McDonnells and the Cassidys as the secrets of the family rivalry unravel."

Jamie Dornan ( Fifty Shades of Grey, Belfast ) is back as Elliot, while Australian actress Danielle Macdonald ( Bird Box ) again plays former Constable Helen Chambers.

Joining them for the second series are Conor MacNeill  (Industry, The Fall) , Olwen Fouéré  (Texas Chainsaw Massacre, The Northman),  Francis Magee  (Justice League, Then You Run) , Mark McKenna  (Sing Street, One of Us is Lying) , Diarmaid Murtagh  (Vikings, Outlander),  and Nessa Matthews  (Neon, HEN) . 

Series two also sees Greg Larsen reprise his role as Ethan Krum.

Comment vous vous appelez ? » C’est la question posée par une femme à un homme qui se réveille dans une chambre d’hôpital, dans une ville inconnue. Qui plus est, cet homme est incapable de répondre à la question et ne sait même pas comment il est arrivé là... L’homme allongé dans le lit, c’est l’acteur Jamie Dornan, repéré dans la série The Fall , et au cinéma dans la trilogie Cinquante nuances de Grey . Le nom de son personnage ? On ne l’apprendra qu’au bout de trois épisodes, alors que la première saison n’en compte que six. Tourné dans le sud de l’Australie, près de Port Augusta, de Peterborough ou encore d’Adélaïde, ce thriller scotche d’emblée le téléspectateur avec quelques éléments disséminés çà et là, qui ne font qu’augmenter la tension au fur et à mesure que l’intrigue avance : un camion qui poursuit une voiture dans le désert, un type enterré vivant dans un baril avec un scorpion et un téléphone portable, une bombe qui explose dans un restaurant fauché d’une petite ville dans le bush... Des événements qui, en apparence, n’ont aucun lien, mais qui, tous, tournent autour de la personnalité de cet homme sans nom. Qui est-il ? Ou, plutôt, qui était-il avant de se réveiller dans un hôpital ? Est-il pourchassé ? Par qui ? Et, surtout, pourquoi ?

« D’habitude, je sais toujours plus ou moins ce que je vais faire de mon personnage et la façon dont il va réagir avec les gens, explique Jamie Dornan. Mais, pour jouer celui que j’appelle l’Homme, les choses se sont passées de façon très différente. Cela va paraître idiot, mais j’avais l’impression de découvrir chaque jour de nouveaux aspects de sa personnalité. Et, en même temps, j’essayais de bloquer tout ce qui était révélé au fil des scènes, afin de garder une sensation de fraîcheur. Finalement, j’ai l’impression que l’Homme passe son temps à changer, et, dans mon esprit, c’est ce que je souhaitais : qu’il se transforme au fur et à mesure qu’il intègre les informations qui lui sont données. Le public part dans une course folle, ponctuée de découvertes à son sujet, intéressantes et, parfois, amusantes, mais aussi très noires. Il n’y a pas un moment de répit. » Résultat ? À l’écran, alors que la série prend son temps et dégage une atmosphère parfois presque contemplative, grâce à la beauté des paysages australiens, les ocres du bush et du désert, le bleu d’un ciel immense, la tension est constante. Le spectateur est sans cesse sur le qui-vive, tout comme les personnages. Pour information, ne soyez pas étonné de croiser, au cours des épisodes, un couple de tortues sauvages provoquant un embouteillage en copulant au milieu d’une route, un cow-boy bedonnant et barbu, tenant tantôt un fusil à canon court, tantôt un bouquet de fleurs, un enquêteur ressemblant à l’un des Men in Black, ou encore un milliardaire grec décomptant soigneusement les gouttes d’un médicament inconnu. Rassurez- vous, tout prendra sens. Promis !

Très bon début comme la Saison 1

Ça se met en place vraiment trop doucement mais cela reste très basique : 2 familles qui de font la guerre, la double négation comme blague a déjà été faite, tout comme la poupée femme.
