It can be pure bacchanalia on the slopes and when the party’s that good, why stop? So where are the best party ski resorts?

From sundown to sunrise – OnTheSnow has picked the best party ski resorts where the party goes on and on starting about 4 p.m. when most slopes close down.

Ever wonder what the term acres-ski is all about? AFAR Magazine explains it like this: “Après-ski is a French term that translates literally to “after ski” or “after skiing.” The phrase, made popular in the Alps during the 1950s rise of commercial skiing, is defined by Oxford Living Dictionaries as “the social activities and entertainment following a day’s skiing.” Today, après-ski provides an umbrella term for popular post-ski activities; it can refer to everything from champagne toasts on slope-side terraces in Chamonix, France, to craft beers around ski lodge fire pits in Aspen, Colorado.”

St Anton’s reputation as an après-ski destination precedes it and for that, we give it 10/10. St. Anton is so well-deserving of its place on our ‘best party ski resorts’ list.

Everyone’s heard of the resort’s “legendary” bars: the MooserWirt and the Krazy Kanguruh , also known as “KK”.  The former is the busiest bar in Austria, kicks off at 3 p.m., and sees gazeeboed Brits dancing on tables loaded with beer and drenched in the frothy stuff.  KK, now owned by Olympic ski champion Mario Matt, is the oldest après ski bar on the mountain – it’s less cheesy than MooserWirt but no less insane. Both bars are a great place to start the evening; they host epic parties throughout the day but close early doors at around 8 p.m.

Late-night party bars include the  Horny Bull where international DJs play the best beats from 11 pm-3 am. There’s also Piccadilly, where ski-wear is not allowed after 9 pm, and the Underground on the Piste .

Ischgl, Austria

Revellers at Ischgl can party longer and harder than their often younger counterparts at St Anton. While the latter is undoubtedly the King of après, and the more famous of the two, Ischgl is considered by those in the know to have as good, if not better, expert terrain and wilder nights.

The town itself is postcard pretty and exudes a sophisticated vibe and with the plethora of bars on offer, there is something to suit all tastes and ages.

A new swanky addition to the ever-expanding number of party ski resort bars is the Champagne Alpine Lodge where you’ll find a variety of champagnes in a cosy lodge atmosphere.  Après here starts at 3 p.m. and continues until 4 a.m.

Other well-known establishments include the rowdy Trofana Alm located next to the five-star Hotel Trofana Royal – it’s always thronging with Austrians and Germans and has a European playlist to match. The Kuhstall, with 38,000 Facebook followers, has DJs and dancing until the early hours.

The real survivors head to Pacha at the Hotel Madlein – all sophisticated interiors, a well-to-do crowd, and half-naked women and men dancing on the stage.

Mayrhofen, Austria

Snowboarding mecca Mayrhofen is another one of our top contenders for the ‘best party ski resorts’ title. Mayrhofen is famous for hosting Snowbombing; an epic week-long winter sports and music festival which features huge artists in pretty sweet settings.

When the festival packs up, the party continues and there’s a wide variety of nightspots to choose from including dozens of British boozers and pubs on the main street (check out the cracking Scotland Yard) as well as more sophisticated venues.

The Ice Bar, next to the Penken gondola and located at the Hotel Strass , is extremely popular, and the Speak Easy Arena, also in the Hotel Strass, is one of the resort’s top venues. It has live music and plays a mix of pop, drum, and bass and dubstep, and Austrian dance tunes.

Bruck’n Stadl , near the Ahorn cable-car bottom station, welcomes all merrymakers, young and old, it doesn’t matter as long as you can handle the pace! The party starts at lunchtime and continues until 2 am.

The two main nightclubs are the Arena and the Schlussel. Arena Night Club is part of the Hotel Strass and has a huge capacity in the basement – expect techno beats and an urban style. Schlussel in Ahornstrasse stays open later than the other – until 6 am!

Les 2 Alpes , France

Steep off-piste terrain and a strip of bars that have earned it the nickname of Las Vegas of the Alps, Les Deux Alpes is a resort that knows how to party hard.

The twin villages of Venosc and Mont de Lan make up the resort and these are linked by a 2km long strip which is filled with bars, restaurants, and clubs.  The villages themselves have retained much of their original charm and are made up of traditional chalets and 1970s apartments – many of which have had makeovers in recent years to create a more Alpine feel.

Most of the action on the strip is to be found at the southern end in the Alpe de Venosc area.

Smokey Joe’s is one of the main après ski spots with nightly live music and a happy hour from 18.00 to 20.00. For a bit of Irish, head to O’Brian’s Pub, which has a disco from 10 pm and closes at 2 am.

You’ll find an international crowd at L’Avalanche which has been rocking hard for twenty years and is something of an institution for late-night revelers.  L’Avalanche Club features a mix of dance and house music with themed nights and competitions and is open until 4 am.

Chamonix, France

The resort known for its expert terrain is equally good at partying.  There is an abundance of bars, over 30, which are open from late afternoon until the wee hours – many have live music nights and don’t close until 2 am.

Teens and twenty-somethings are likely to be found in the triangle of bars just off Avenue Michel Croz: Elevation 1904, Moö and Chambre Neuf .  And no trip to Chamonix would be complete without a visit to the latter which draws visitors and locals alike. The bar is open all day from 8 am until late with happy hour taking place between 8 pm-10 pm.  Live music takes place on Sunday through to Friday from 5.30 pm until 7.30 pm.

Also popular is underground club Le Tof , Chamonix’s only official gay bar, which welcomes punters from Monday through to Saturday from 5 pm to 4 am.  Le Tof puts on themed nights along the lines of Electro house, the 80s, Singles Night, and Drag Night Parties which make for eccentric and naughty but fun nights.

Just around the corner from Le Tof is L’Amnesia – Chamonix’s largest club which stays open until 4 am.  Entry is normally free except when they have occasional themed nights such as foam parties and lingerie shows.

Those with any stamina left should head to The Bunker Nightclub. With 45 flavoured vodkas to keep you going strong, the club stays open until 7 am.

Heavenly, Lake Tahoe, USA

Heading to the U.S. West? From its famous on-mountain Unbuckle Après Ski party hosted at Tamarack Lodge , to sell-out casino hotel shows, to the electric atmosphere of the casinos and clubs, Heavenly is in a league of its own.

Here, you can party all night, gamble quite a bit, too and worry about sleep later.  Indeed, it’s the only resort to offer 24/7 casino entertainment literally at the base of its mountain.

No trip to this party ski resort would be complete without a stop at The Cabo Wabo Cantina in Harvey’s Casino.  The venue is a popular Mexican restaurant that morphs into a late-night dance floor. It attracts a cool crowd and stays open well into the night with live entertainment five nights a week.

Nestled in the Ötztal valley in the magnificent Austrian state of Tyrol, Sölden sure knows how to party. To kick off your après-ski celebrations why not try ‘Fire&Ice’, a great place to drink and dance. Most of the drinking establishments are on the Dorfstraße which makes a pub crawl a great option.

Every year Sölden holds the ‘Electric mountain festival’, bringing the world’s top electronic dance DJs to the Alps. So after a day of carving up the slopes, you can be entertained by the world’s best. The next Electric mountain festival will be held on 7th and 8th April 2022 so you’ve got some time to plan. If you have a Solden skipass, you’ll get free admission to this festival. And every month during the snow season there are Electric mountain parties where top DJs take the turntables to the delight of the après crowd.

Apart from being a sure bet for a good party, Sölden is also a sure bet for snow. With it’s high altitude, snow conditions are amazing from early in the season to late in April. And Sölden doesn’t have one glacier, it has two, the Rettenbach glacier and the Tiefenbach glacier with wide runs and spectacular views.

Revellers at Ischgl can party long and hard. This resort, voted best ski resort of 2018, is known for it’s wild late nights, or rather early mornings! The town has retained it’s picture postcard good looks and with a wide selection of restaurants and bars, there’s something here for everyone.

In this charming Austrian town, you can have a drink at what is considered one of the best après-ski bars in the world, the Trofana Alm! Here they truly know how to party to a European playlist. And they’ve totally renovated the old digs for opening in winter 2021. In the same league, there’s the Kuhstall where the DJs keep you dancing till the early hours of the morning.

This resort also plays host to the legendary ‘Top of the Mountain festival’. It’s one hell of a party that usually closes the season with music, dancing, lights, insanity, drinks and lots of smiles. Last spring this festival was cancelled due to Covid restrictions but hopefully they’ll be rocking the mountain in early 2022. We can’t find the dates but expect it to some time in April.

High up in the Austrian Alps, you’ll find Mayrhofen. For decades, this has been a favourite for skiers and snowboarders alike although it is known specifically as a snowboarding mecca. With 142km of runs and 58 lifts, it has a reputation for reliable snow and a long season of it as well. Mayrhofen also has Austria’s steepest slope called the Hakakiri!

And as far as partying goes, Mayrhofen can truly rock and attracts a young, hip crowd. At the top of the Penken cable cars is the ‘Pilzbar’. With an umbrella bar and terrace, this is the perfect place to start the après-ski. Another great starting point is ‘Bruck n Stadl’ where the party starts at lunchtime and continues until 2am. Since the pandemic, they’ve upgraded their outdoor seating area so it’s a fabulous place to hang out in the fresh air.

‘Bruck n Stadl’ is also where the ‘Snowbombing festival’ kicks off. This festival is an epic week-long sporting and music festival which features huge names playing in this magnificent setting. This awesome festival will be taking place on from 4th to the 9th April 2022. Check it out.

Considered by some to be the après capital of the Alps, this Austrian hot spot is a great choice for a party and with 94 lifts servicing more than 700 km of awesome terrain, it’s also perfect for the action on the slopes.

It’s a difficult choice when asked which party venue we’d recommend, but we couldn’t write about St.Anton without mentioning ‘MooserWirt’ – the legendary après ski destination where there’s great food, drink and sounds (closes early though at 8pm). The bartenders are something to see, carrying trays 30 large beers per tray, one in each hand. St. Anton is perhaps not the destination for those seeking a chilled après ski as it may also be the most jammed and jumping place to be come snow season.

Here at Les Deux Alpes the daytime après-ski is huge, there are outdoor and indoor music stages, loads of alpine bars and secret parties – it’s not surprising that this resort is also known as the Las Vegas of the Alps. The charming villages of Venosc and Mont de Lan together make up this ski resort and these two villages are linked by a 2km long strip which is filled with bars, restaurants and clubs.

And if you’re looking for an awesome festival, Les Deux Alpes also has that. Helping you to truly celebrate the festive season, the ‘Rise Festival’ is early, taking place this year between the 11th to the 18th December 2021. It’s an action-packed week with world reowned DJs as well as up and coming talent.

And regarding the terrain, it’s 220km of stunning slopes with Europe’s largest skiable glacier and there is something for newbies to expert skiers and snowboarders.

Tignes, in the northern French Alps, is a world-renowned resort not only known for its magnificent skiing and snowboarding oppurtunities but also for it’s après-ski. The options for where to go are endless but here are some tips. For a convenient slope-side drink, try the ‘Marmot Arms’ for live music and good food, or go a little more upmarket and check out the ‘Le Whitney Bar’. The ‘Saloon bar’ and the ‘Polar Bear Pub’ are also great choices. Tignes also has four clubs to keep you dancing into the morning so there should be something here for everyone.

As far as festivals go, ‘Live in Tignes by Francofolies’ is everything you could want from a slope side festival and more. There are two stages, one on the slopes and the other in town. This fabulous festival is usually in April and is completely free!

Val Thorens is a favourite amongst the students so there’s always a lively young crowd here in the French, purpose-built village. With pretty much guarenteed snow cover from November to May, Val Thorens has terrain for all levels from beginners to experts and it’s setting at the head of the Belleville valley is truly spectacular.

Val Thorens sure knows how to party with a wide selection of bars and clubs to suit all tastes. Try one of the most popular bars in the Alps, ‘La Folie Douce’. This is the hottest and highest après-bar with breath taking views over the moutains. Here they play great tunes and mix amazing drinks.

‘Bar 360’ attracts a young crowd, with its perfect location and large terrace. Then there’s the on-slope, ‘Saloon bar’ with a famous happy hour and great music. As far as night clubs go, you must try the ‘Malaysia’, the largest nightclub in the Alps.

Unknown to many, Cervinia has some epic après-ski! The weekend starts on Wednesday with Thursday having the best happy hours and other entertainment. What’s really cool is that you can start on the slopes and work your way down the mountain. Start at ‘Plan Torrette’ where you can cure the afternoon munchies, then make your way done to the ‘Principe’ then into town for the ‘Dragon’, a pub-style drinking hole with a dance floor in the basement.

Now we’ve planned your route, let’s just give you a little info about the resort itself. It’s linked to Zermatt in Switzerland with access to some of Europe’s highest pistes. The top lift reaches an incredible 3883m and there are 350 kms of slopes split into 150 runs, some of them very long. Cervinia is a great place for beginners.

For some true Italian spirit as well as a cheap après ski resort, check out Livigno. Right on the Swiss border, this place is a marvellous mix of party and snow. When you’ve had your fill of action, grab a bite to eat at the ‘Angels and Demons’ where they serve a fantastic risotto. There’s no shortage of great places to party after that. Check out the ‘Kosmo’ umbrella bar with live music and DJs or what about the ‘Stalet’, which has an early start and often involves people dancing on the tables!

Livigno also has it’s own festval ‘Snowland’ which usually takes place in late March. You’ll be partying alonside around 10 000 other après-skiers at 7 different locations and an open air stage. What’s not to love.

Experience a variety of snow destinations

What’s better than skiing or snowboarding on a fantastic field? Hitting the snow at multiple snow spots on the one trip. On an Intrepid group ski and snowboarding holiday, you can try up to five different snow fields on the same tour in Queenstown and beyond. With trips ranging from 5 to 12 days, there’s more than enough on-snow action to satisfy even the keenest skier.

Ski on private club fields

Your ski trip with Intrepid gives you access to local ‘untamed’ ski areas known as ski clubs or private fields with uncrowded slopes and no lift queues. If you want to soak up the old-school vibe of a traditional ski experience, these not-for-profit clubs are the perfect spot. Skiing and snowboarding at a private field also increases your chances of making fresh tracks on pristine powder snow.

I am a beginner (or an expert). what trip should i choose.

We have options for beginner and intermediate/expert skiers and snowboarders alike. If you are a beginner then our Ski New Zealand: 7 Day South Island Snow Safari is for you. We throw in 2 beginner lessons free and can arrange more if you want them. It’s also a great option for more advanced snow lovers as well. If you are looking to get off groomed snow and away from the crowds to test your intermediate to advanced skills on untamed and uncrowded terrain, then our Ski New Zealand: 5 Day South Island Snow Explorer or 12 day Ski New Zealand: South Island Snow Odyssey is for you.

These are guided group trips, will I always be skiing or boarding in a group?

Alongside organising all the logistics of your trip our friendly local leaders will always join the group on the snow, but due to the nature of the terrain and our customers’ personal ski run preferences, they cannot be with everyone in the group at all times. Think of them as personal mentor you will always give you the best advice on where to go based on your abilities and preferences. While ‘sure’ is their default answer, they also always know when it is best to say ‘no’ too.

What happens if a mountain is shut?

In the mountains the weather has the final say, and your safety is our primary concern. We make amendments to our tour route on the rare occasions that any mountains are shut or have very poor conditions - going to a different mountain if at all possible.

I don’t want to bring my own gear. Can I hire it locally?

We get it, lugging your own gear around, especially when coming from overseas, can be a painful and expensive experience. So let us take care if it with our extensive range of high-quality rental gear options. We have packages available for ski and board hire (which includes skis/board, boots and poles), helmet hire or even winter snow clothing. Just let us know what you need and collect it on day one to keep with you for the entire trip – no more changing equipment as you go move between ski fields. Best of all, we’ll even return it for you at the end of your holiday.

Do I need special insurance?

Policies vary but we strongly recommend double checking with your insurer that they cover ‘adventure activities’ such as skiing and snowboarding, as many popular insurers have this as an optional extra rather than included. This is especially important if your itinerary includes off-piste skiing/boarding or heli-skiing.

On the CLASSIC Dolomites Ski Safari , there are no obligatory black slopes. You can cruise the whole week on nothing more challenging than a red ski slope if you wish! For those seeking a little more, you can take on the ‘Tomba la Bomba’, Vulcano and a number of other great black slopes.

The  VENTURE Dolomites Ski Safari  is a faster pace. We hunt down some cracking Dolomite black ski slopes, look to set a blistering pace and take on all four world cup ski slopes that the Dolomites has to offer.

The SPECIAL Dolomites Ski Safari incorporates the best rifugi in the Dolomites and some memorable experiences. Arrive at the Marmolada by helicopter and in time for the first box and fresh tracks! And how about arriving at your remote rifugio on a snowmobile? Oh, and the skiing is just world-class!

There is something magical about staying on the mountain; As the other skiers drop back into their valleys and return to their hotels, you pull up a chair, order a drink and allow the mountain tranquillity to wash over you. We give you a piste map, but you won't ever need it! Nor do you need to worry about the next run, as your ski leader briefs you before each slope.

Don't concern yourself with lunch, coffee stops or even what time it is. There are no arguments as to where to go next or whether you're up to the next run.

Washington Pass Birthday Tour

The Birth­day Tour is spring ski-tour­ing clas­sic that becomes eas­i­ly acces­si­ble when Wash­ing­ton Pass along the famous North Cas­cades High­way opens in April or May. Span­ning 5 miles, the Birth­day tour cir­cum­nav­i­gates a long ridge strad­dling Okanogan and Chelan Coun­ties, and access­es many open bowls and chutes. Best of all the tour typ­i­cal­ly doesn’t involve car­ry­ing your skis even as late as mid-June! 

If you are new to back­coun­try ski­ing this is guar­an­teed to get you hooked! The Birth­day Tour pro­vides plen­ty of ski­ing for all abil­i­ty lev­el and incred­i­ble views of the North Cas­cades. With slopes at a vari­ety of aspects and angles, and the abil­i­ty to ski in either direc­tion depend­ing on the con­di­tions, the Birth­day Tour near­ly always pro­vides great snow con­di­tions. For many, The Birth­day Tour rep­re­sents an annu­al rite of spring. 

There are many superb options near­by for those look­ing to extend their stay in the WA Pass area. Maple Pass, just a short dri­ve from WA Pass prop­er, offers a long tour over var­ied ter­rain that is just as epic, but less trav­eled than the Birth­day Tour. Anoth­er option is a trip up and over Sil­ver Star, that involves ski­ing on glaciat­ed ter­rain, and a pos­si­ble sum­mit of Sil­ver Star.

Washington Pass Birthday Tour Day by Day

We meet ear­ly on the first day at a local gear shop in Seat­tle. After a quick ori­en­ta­tion, and equip­ment check we start our dri­ve to Wash­ing­ton Pass. The dri­ve typ­i­cal­ly takes about 4 hours. Along the way you can enjoy the beau­ti­ful moun­tains scenery of the North Cas­cades and we’ll get some turns in time permitting!

There is the option to camp near the town of Maza­ma, stay at a local Hos­tel, or Hotel in Winthrop, or go all in on the adven­ture and camp in the snow in Wash­ing­ton Pass. 

We have the option of start­ing from the Hair­pin turn on HWY 20, or at the Blue Lake Trail­head. Either option has its mer­its; the start from the Blue Lake Trail­head short­ens the dis­tance to Blue Lake Col, but a start from the Hair­pin turn means you fin­ish back at the car, and the final descent to the vehi­cle from Goat Pass is spec­tac­u­lar. Either start­ing point might be cho­sen on the day of the tour depend­ing on conditions. 

The com­plete Birth­day Tour is just over 5 miles, not includ­ing any vari­a­tions to earn more turns, and typ­i­cal­ly takes 6 – 8 hours. 

*There is the option to return to Seat­tle after the sec­ond day.

There are many excel­lent break­fast options avail­able in the towns of Winthrop, and Maza­ma, or if you’ve camped up at WA Pass your guide will fix you some­thing hearty to restore your ener­gy lev­els after a long tour the pre­vi­ous day. We then dri­ve you back to Seattle.

From LGBTQ+ ski weeks to programs for disabled athletes, these ski events help everyone find a place on the slopes.

There’s a certain barrier to entry when it comes to winter sports like skiing and snowboarding. For many, that barrier is financial, as prohibitive costs pile up with rentals, lift tickets, and lodging. For others, though, the biggest barrier is cultural — a lack of accessibility and diversity. According to the National Ski Area Association , nearly 90 percent of skiers and snowboarders in the U.S. are white, with historically minuscule representation from BIPOC communities, and 62 percent of skiers and snowboarders are male, according to recent reports . While openly out LGBTQ+ professional athletes are increasingly showing up and adaptive winter sports programs are available for visitors with disabilities at some ski resorts, there’s still a long way to go to make winter sports accessible to all. 

U.S. resorts have poured concerted efforts into diversifying those demographics. From BIPOC organizations and queer ski weeks to events focused on women and disabled skiers, diverse groups across the country are out to shift the paradigm and break down barriers. Here are 10 ski weeks and retreats to check out this year.

Black Ski Summit

Recent data shows that only 1.5 percent of skiers in the U.S. are Black, but the Black Ski Summit is plowing a path toward change. Run by the National Brotherhood of Skiers , it’s the largest ski convention in the world, with week-long annual events in the country’s most famed destinations; the 2023 event took place in Vail, and the 2024 summit is slated for Big Sky, Montana in February. At each summit, Black skiers and snowboarders can register to partake in races, happy hours, parties, picnics, and leisurely days on the slopes at discounted rates, all while surrounded by people who make them feel welcome

BIPOC Mountain Collective

“Never ride alone” is the mantra for the BIPOC Mountain Collective , a nationwide network of clubs striving to unify marginalized communities on the slopes. Outposts are strewn across the country, from Denver and D.C. to Seattle and Colorado Springs, with inclusive meet-ups held each winter and early spring. For a fee of $39.99, members can register for events and trips open to all ages, skill levels, and interests, like the NBS Homecoming in Frisco, Colorado, and various day trips in places like Keystone and Winter Park. 

Aspen Gay Ski Week

A veritable winter Pride festival held in one of the most iconic ski destinations in the world, Aspen Gay Ski Week is the oldest and largest event of its kind in the Western Hemisphere. It’s also the only nonprofit gay ski week, uniting thousands of LGBTQ+ athletes and allies for a week of snow sports and après fun. For 47 years, the long-running event has defied prejudice, stereotypes, and elitism to provide a snowy sanctuary for othered skiers. What began as a small ski club and condo party has ballooned into a world-famous spectacle with parties, events, drag shows, ski races, costume contests, and omnipresent Pride flags billowing around town. The 2024 outing, scheduled for Jan. 14-21, will see the annual tradition of a giant Pride flag carried down the mountain, along with events like the Downhill Costume Competition, the Texas-themed Electric Cowboy dance party, a DJ-driven pool party with water slides and dancing, and Talks Like These, a panel discussion on the future of the LGBTQ+ community.

Hartford Ski Spectacular

Skiing and snowboarding are still too often reserved for people without disabilities. But thanks to events like the Hartford Ski Spectacular , there’s more room on the slopes than ever before. The annual outing, held by Move United at Beaver Run Resort in Breckenridge, is among the foremost sports festivals for people with disabilities, with ample equipment designed to meet all needs. Founded more than 30 years ago, annual attendance now exceeds 800, and each year includes a week-long spree of events and activations hinged on accessibility. This season’s spectacular was held Dec. 3-9, and it included ski and snowboard lessons, racing, Nordic skiing, banquets, and networking events. Check the website for details about next season’s events as they become available.   

Inclusive Ski Touring

Accessibility and inclusivity are the overarching philosophies at Inclusive Ski Touring , a nonprofit in Maine that offers snowy outings that are affordable, welcoming, and diverse. For all programs and events, which include both uphill and downhill skiing, participants can use a registration code that waives entry fees, diminishing the barrier to entry for novices and experts alike. Native Mainer Zach McCarthy started Inclusive Ski Touring in 2021, seeing enough immediate demand to merit nonprofit designation and create a community of like-minded individuals. For the 2023 season, 74 percent of participants had never done a ski tour before, 69 percent were female, 18 percent were people of color, and 1 percent were non-binary. The organization hosts events tailored to specific groups, like Underrepresented Athlete Programs for BIPOC and Latino participants, and programs that are just for women and non-binary attendees .

Open Slopes PDX

What started as a one-off BIPOC ski night at Mt. Hood Skibowl in 2021 has evolved into a beacon of inclusivity in the Pacific Northwest. Open Slopes PDX is an organization that orchestrates ski and snowboard outings for BIPOC individuals — including equipment rentals, lift tickets, transportation, training, and dinner — at zero cost, while also providing job opportunities for mentors. Most events take place at Mt. Hood, but the organization has branched into the Seattle area to meet demand, hosting an event at the Summit in Snoqualmie. Open Slopes also hosts Queer Shred events, mostly at terrain parks, that cost a fraction of typical prices and allow LGBTQ+ folks to find camaraderie and encouragement. 

Winter Rendezvous

Every January for the past 41 years, the quaint Vermont town of Stowe becomes an oasis of queer celebration. The Winter Rendezvous , next held Jan. 17-21 with the theme “Ski Party Play,” is a winter wonderland with a side of Pride, wherein hundreds of LGBTQ+ attendees are met with a lineup of activities and entertainment. This includes cross-country skiing and snowshoeing at Trapp Family Lodge, the official Nordic Center of Winter Rendezvous, plus ice skating, horse-drawn sleigh rides, snowmobiles, dog sledding, hot tubs, and of course, skiing and snowboarding on Mount Mansfield and Spruce Peak. Indoors, events include daily après-ski meet-ups, drag bingo, a dance party at Alfie’s Wild Ride, and a VIP Bonfire Bash.

Alaska Ski for Women

Cross-country skiing gets inclusive at the Alaska Ski for Women event, the largest of its kind on the continent, with upwards of 1,000 women — of all ages and abilities— convening every winter to ski in the Final Frontier. Held the first Sunday of February, the 2.4-mile course allows a safe outlet for camaraderie and expression, with colorful costumes encouraged. Preceding the main event in 2024, Friends and Family Ski takes place Saturday, Feb. 4, when family members and kids are invited to ski the decorated course. Food trucks, a silent auction, drink vendors, and free massages are all standing by from 10 a.m.-2 p.m., and there’s a mimosa reception from 11 a.m.-1:30 p.m.

On the heels of the Sundance Film Festival, another type of winter festival heats things up in Park City during Gay Ski Week . The 14th annual event brings the LGBTQ+ community for a few days of fun in the snow and sun, complete with a plethora of après-ski gatherings, cocktail hours, and dance parties — not to mention the ample trails at Park City Mountain and Deer Valley Resort. Held Feb. 28 - March 3, the next event is expected to draw more than 1,200 skiers and snowboarders, with 25 percent discounts on passes afforded to Utah residents. The event’s schedule is just as appealing as the slopes, running the gamut from wine receptions and a Flashback Friday après-ski with ‘80s music to neon dance parties at Cabin Nightclub.

It all starts with the World Disabled Invitational, with professional athletes with disabilities vying in a race. This is followed by subsequent events like the Kid’s Snowplow Sprint, the Corporate Challenge race, and the Grand Finale, celebrating race winners atop the mountain.

Venture beyond the ski runs as we dive into the realm of après-ski beyond the ordinary. In this exploration of unique post-skiing festivities, we uncover some of the most unforgettable après parties and experiences that break away from the ordinary “patio-and-chill” routine. From Mammoth Mountain’s Weekend Après Party to mountainside concerts to mid-mountain pop-up après-ski bars, there are plenty of gems to discover across the country that redefine the art of unwinding after a day on the slopes. Create memories that go beyond the thrill of the ski run with these great après-ski parties.

The Weekend Après Party, Mammoth Mountain

Mammoth Mountain is known for many things: Big snow (over 900 inches at the summit last year), a big mountain with more than 3,500 acres of skiable terrain, its Unbound Terrain Parks (among the best in the world), one of the longest seasons in the country, and an average of 300 annual days of sunshine. It’s no surprise then that Mammoth is also home to one of the best après-ski parties in North America . After an amazing day on the mountain (or a day off exploring Mammoth Lakes), look no further than the Canyon Lodge Sundeck for one of America’s best après-ski parties. The lodge’s indoor/outdoor Lincoln Bar is host to the famous event running from 2-5 p.m. every Friday and Saturday starting December 22.

The weekly party features dj WLDCT spinning tunes from an elevated gondola car, champagne showers, crowd surfing, and much more. Be sure to dress for the occasion, stay hydrated, and keep on the lookout for giveaways from the mountain’s sponsors throughout the year. Those not coming straight from the mountain can still join the fun by taking advantage of the complimentary Village Gondola, which connects The Village at Mammoth to Canyon Lodge.

The Weekend Après Party runs through April 14 and culminates with the resort’s annual pond skim . Join Mammoth’s most fearless and wild costumed skiers and snowboarders, and straight line your way across an ice cold, 100-plus foot pond before closing out the après season in style. 

Subaru WinterFest, at Ski Resorts Across North America

Subaru WinterFest has made its way around North America for years, bringing an incredible concert series to major resorts from February into April. In 2024 the tour will stop at Killington and Copper Mountain in February, Eldora Mountain Resor t and Sierra-at-Tahoe in March, and Snowbird and Mt. Bachelor in April. Bonus: Many of these ski areas, with the exception of Sierra-at-Tahoe, are accessible on the Ikon Pass . The event has brought some pretty big names to ski resorts, including Shakey Graves, Big Gigantic, Billy Strings, the Lil Smokies, Lukas Nelson, and more. Whether you’re a bluegrass fan or you’re more into shaking your hips to house beats, Subaru WinterFest will surely provide.

The St. Regis Mountain Terrace, Deer Valley

St. Regis’s Mountain Terrace, on the border of Deer Valley Resort’s Deer Hollow run, is where you’ll find an elevated après-ski party in Park City. Inside the warming yurt, you’ll find cocktails, a club-like seating arrangement (including bottle service), and often a dj accompanied by a packed dance floor. Stick around long enough after the lifts have stopped running, and you’ll be able to catch the champagne sabering experience each night at 5:30. St. Regis brings out an actual saber, which clears the cork right off the neck of the bottle, opening up a fresh bottle of bubbly that’s poured around for the whole patio.

Tōst pop-up, Northstar California

Don’t miss one of Lake Tahoe’s most unique après -ski traditions, and the area’s only ski-up champagne experience of its kind, at Northstar California . At 2 p.m., skiers and riders clink glasses at tōst just off the East Ridge run before getting in a few more laps for the day at Northstar. Pro tip: Get in line by 1:30, especially on weekends, as this is a popular experience. Complimentary glasses of champagne (or cider) are first come, first serve. Sparkling wine is available for purchase after 2 p.m. for those who want to kick back and relax before getting in a few more runs.

Bud Light Hi-Fi Concert Series, Aspen

Aspen ‘s Bud Light Hi-Fi Concert Series transforms the après-ski experience in Aspen Snowmass with a fun lineup of free concerts set against iconic backdrops like Snowmass Base Village, Gondola Plaza, and downtown Aspen. The concert series, from February 21 to mid-April, features midweek and weekend shows, including a lively Mardi Gras kickoff in Snowmass Base Village with a parade, Cajun food, and the sounds of Snacktime. In 2023, headlining artists featured Black Pistol Fire, Mt. Joy, and the Robert Randolph Band. The 2024 lineup will be announced here .

Complementing the town’s already lively après scene (think DJs at Ajax Tavern and exclusive concerts at Belly Up), Aspen’s Bud Light Hi-Fi Concert Series offers a dynamic blend of skiing and sensational music, promising unforgettable après-ski moments.

Après-Ski in the Plaza takes over Mountain Village Plaza, the central base village of Big Sky , from 3:30 pm to 5:30 pm, Fridays through Sundays. Dance off the ski day with local and guest djs performing at the center of where it all happens at Big Sky. Après-Ski in the Plaza’s central location makes this a great spot to grab a bite or drink afterward at any number of nearby restaurants and bars. Grab a cocktail at the Umbrella Bar, a yurt-style pop-up in the middle of Mountain Village Plaza, or pull up a seat on the deck of Vista Hall to get a birds-eye view of the action.

Nordic Skiing Association 1964-2024 60 th Anniversary

It is time to celebrate our 60 th Anniversary and look back at this organization and all that it has brought to our city and state.

Anchorage was a different place in 1964. Northern Lights Blvd. was considered the outskirts of town. There were two high schools: West High and East High. Winter recreation activities were limited yet the “can do” spirit that helped Alaska reach statehood in 1959 was everywhere.

The Nordic Ski Club of Anchorage was born on January 12 th ,1964 when Sewell “Stumpy” Faulkner invited friends, their families, and community leaders to a cross country ski race beginning in his front yard and heading over the train trestle tracks to Forest Park Country Club and back. The Alaska Railroad agreed to halt trains to accommodate the race. Olympian Dick Mize (East High Ski Coach) and Joe Kalla (Clark Jr. High’s Ski Coach) set up the course. Trophies sponsored by local companies were awarded to the age group winners. There was Gluhwein for the adults, lemonade for the kids, and cheese fondue for all. Over 100 people of all ages showed up and two days later the Nordic Ski Club (NSC) was formed on January 14 th ,1964 with 40 pioneer members and their families.  By the end of the first season races, ski tours, lessons, and wax clinics had been held, a Jr. National team had been selected, and plans were made to build a ski jump and a ski trail at Russian Jack Springs.

Fast forward 10 years… by 1974 NSC had over 2000 active members. There were monthly meetings and a newsletter that kept everyone informed about club activities. Ski trails had been built at Russian Jack Springs Park, Pt. Woronzof, Centennial Park, Kincaid, and Service. The Russian Jack trail now had a lighted loop. The NSC and USSA had an active race program often with 2 races each weekend plus high school and junior high races.  Many Jr. racers represented this club in Jr. National competitions and Anchorage based skiers were named to National and Olympic XC Ski Teams. Club sponsored ski tours were very popular filling buses for tours all-over South-Central Alaska. The Great Alaska Ski Train debuted in 1972.

The 1980s and 1990’s was a time of program expansion and further trail improvements. Kincaid now had a biathlon range, 25 km of additional trails including the World Cup, Jodhpur, Lekisch and Sisson trails, and additional lighting on Margaux’s. The Kincaid Chalet was built with road, parking, and stadium improvements with Project ‘80s funding and a lot of volunteer energy. In 1985, NSC became NSAA. The track pin program began in 1983 to help fund trail grooming. At Hillside, the Spencer trail and Randy’s Loop were added along with additional lighting and parking at Hilltop and Abbott Road. The Tour of Anchorage trail through Far North Bicentennial Park was now in use with bridges over Campbell Creek. NSAA’s marquis events: the Tour of Anchorage and the Ski for Women were now part of the yearly calendar. During this time NSAA hosted 15 National and International events ranging from the first US hosted World Cup race (1983), the Ski for Light, Special Olympics, Olympic tryout races, Masters Nationals, World Masters, and Jr. National competitions. NSAA now had huts at Manitoba and Golda’s Cabin in Hope for NSAA’s backcountry skiers. Our Nordic Ski Patrol was recognized as one of the best in the nation.

By the 2000s the Club had established the core trail systems at Hillside and Kincaid. Focus shifted to improving signage, widening existing trails for the skate technique, and upgrading the grooming fleet. The Kincaid Project Group (KPG)raised funds to install snowmaking and a new biathlon range, a 20-year project. The Karl Eid Ski Jumping complex at Hillside saw the most growth with an additional 65-meter ski jump, snowmaking, and improvements to the hill for summer jumping. Jr. Nordic became an official program of NSAA in 2004 and in the 2021-22 ski season there were 885 active participants. Anchorage now is home to elite training clubs for XC skiing, jumping and biathlon. Over half of the US Olympic Cross-Country team in the last 2 Olympics were based in Anchorage. They wouldn’t train here if it wasn’t for the great trails and grooming support NSAA (the “Mother Club”) provides. At the end of the 2022-23 ski season NSAA had over 4000 members.

How did this all happen? Volunteers! Too many to list here but if it wasn’t for these dedicated folks, Anchorage would not be considered the “Best Urban Ski Trail System in the US”. NSAA maintains and grooms over 160 km of trails year-round. While NSAA still depends on its volunteer workforce we have grown and depend on year-round paid staff to maintain and run our grooming equipment and run our multi-million-dollar operation.

We are proud of all that we’ve done yet we have many things to still accomplish. Moving forward our club has many dreams for the future. How can you help? Be a member at whatever level you can afford and volunteer . We need you.

I want to thank you for helping us stay alive at our retail shop. You are supporting the families of over 30 employees as well as many local gear reps who we buy from. 

This ski touring blog is in constant edit and add mode. I re-write nearly every time I look at my posts honestly.  Check back regularly for improvements.  Please don’t take anything I’ve said with 100% accuracy.  My process is simply based on memory and looking at pictures I take. There is no precise measuring or complicated computer mapping going on here. I might start GPS tracking however with Gaia, replacing my old silly maps. Stop by the shop or contact me directly for help planning your ski tours. I am happy to direct you to the many local pro IFMGA guides as well.

There is an absurdity in trying to describe a backcountry ski tour. There is way too much to say if I were aiming to warn you of every danger and explain how to find the best experience. I buy every guidebook for ski touring and rock climbing, and rarely find I needed the few sentences I read. But they got me in the car and pointed me towards the best stuff in the area.  My main goal is to get people stoked on ski touring while I tap at a keyboard at 3am, looking over old photos.

Grab a map and guidebook from our shop or here on the E-com website. Search the web for more beta. Talk to me. Hire an AMGA guide to teach you the skills. Put all that together and go for it!

There are inherent risks when skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing or climbing in the backcountry. The routes on these maps may be dangerous and even deadly depending on many variables such as current avalanche danger, weather, snowpack depth, skill and experience level and time of day. Plan on climbing 1000 vertical feet per hour. Add time for low angle miles, high elevation, poor equipment and slow partners. Subtract time by starting early, traveling light, and strategic tour planning.

If you are not an expert and experienced backcountry skier, snowboarder, snowshoer or climber, we strongly suggest that you hire a professional guide. We recommend excellent local guides and backcountry skills classes from local pro guide companies International Alpine Guides and www.AlpenglowExpeditions.com .  We also highly recommend Sierra Mountain Guides out of Bishop, and Shasta Mountain Guides if you are heading up there. There are a lot of competent Sierra ski guides. Skip the learning curve and help these guys make a living. Contact me for personal guide suggestions. But you can’t go wrong with AMGA certified guides.

Complain to USFS, CA State Parks and TRPA for unwillingness to facilitate access to our public lands in Tahoe for decades. I have spoken to the top officials at “stakeholder” meetings and delivered private presentations on ski touring in Tahoe many times in the last 20 years. They say they are listening and agree…meanwhile they only remove parking and access every year. They don’t stick up for us. They claim they have no control over Caltrans and CHP. These land managers are equally charged with the duty of improving public recreation opportunities, compared to environmental protection. All they do is work on development and tourism. They will literally tell you that ski areas are where we should be going.

Billionaire presumed dead may be living in Moscow with younger woman: reports

A billionaire long believed to have died in a skiing accident may actually be alive and living with a younger woman in Moscow, new evidence has suggested.

Karl-Erivan Haub, then 58, vanished on a solo ski tour in the Alps on April 7, 2018. A six-day search yielded no sign of the businessman, and he was declared dead by a German court in 2021, according to the Seattle Times.

Now, however, the state prosecutor’s office in Cologne has opened a probe into allegations that Haub’s brother, Christian, provided false information when he said he had zero information indicating that his brother could still be alive, the Daily Beast explained.

The investigation followed a criminal complaint from journalists with the broadcaster RTL that were looking into Haub’s disappearance, the outlet said.

One of the journalists, investigative reporter Liv von Boetticher, told Capital magazine that she was aware of photos allegedly showing Haub in Moscow in 2021 – the same year he was legally declared dead.

“As far as I know, these photos were obtained on behalf of Christian Haub and two internal investigators working for him by an Israeli-American company that searched the biometric surveillance system in Moscow for images of Karl-Erivan Haub,” she explained.

The coincidence in appearance between Haub and the person in the images was about 90%, according to a Stern magazine report from March 2023 .

Based on her information, Boetticher explained, Christian Haub had access to the photos when “he stated under oath to the Cologne District Court in May 2021 that he had ‘no reliable evidence’ that his brother was still alive.”

Boetticher insisted that there is “strong evidence that [Karl-Erivan Haub] could have caused his disappearance intentionally and that at least parts of his family were aware of it and, against their better judgment, kept this secret from the Cologne District Court and the public.”

Haub – who was born to German parents in Tacoma, Washington, and educated in Switzerland – was married and had two adult children at the time of his disappearance. 

The latest evidence, however, suggested that he may have a younger woman on the go in Russia, Boetticher told Capital.

“There was an alleged lover of Karl-Erivan Haub, with whom he had frequent telephone contact before his disappearance and who is in contact with the Russian domestic secret service FSB,” she said.

Haub vanished just one month after the death of his father, Erivan Haub. At the time of his death, the elder Haub was worth an estimated $6.4 billion, according to Forbes .

Boetticher indicated that the reason for Karl-Erivan Haub vanishing could be linked to the family’s business dealings.

 “Our suspicion is that dealings with Russia or with Russian business partners may have put Karl-Erivan in trouble in the Western world,” the journalist suggested to Capital.

Christian Haub took over the Tengelmann Group as sole CEO shortly after his older brother disappeared.

His lawyer, Mark Binz, vehemently denied the journalists’ allegations in a comment to Zeit Online.

“Of course, there is no truth to the accusation,” Bonz scoffed. “Until a few weeks ago, the Cologne public prosecutor’s office saw it that way and therefore refused to start an investigation.”
