MY Harmony V Review

Review of my harmony v.

The 1985-built Harmony V cruise ship is a futuristic-looking superyacht owned by Variety Cruises ( fleet ). This luxury yacht is Ideally sized for the coastline and coves of the Greek Isles and cruises from either Piraeus-Athens or Crete. The season is from April to October, with itineraries that visit Santorini , Delos , Heraklion and Mykonos , even though the ship is also able to get into ports as diverse as Kea (Tzia) island and Spetses . Winter finds Harmony V cruising along the rivers of Western Africa and Cape Verde Islands .

The vessel (IMO number 8620583) is currently Greece- flagged (MMSI 237243500) and registered in Piraeus/Athens .

Harmony V yacht cruise ship

The ship Harmony V was delivered to Variety Cruises in October 2008. The vessel was completely rebuilt in 2009 in order to accommodate upscale cruise passengers the line is attracting via its unique itineraries and services. The luxury yacht can travel at the leisurely 11 knots. She has dual stabilizers and 3 passenger decks with capacity for 49 guests.

Decks and Cabins

The yacht has 3 decks and total 25 staterooms - all outside and with either portholes or picture windows. Cabins are priced in 4 categories: A (on the upper deck), B and C (on the main deck) determined by location. The only two P cabins (on the upper deck) are junior suites with seating areas featuring convertible sofa beds for triple occupancy. Standard cabins are sized 12,5 m2 (135 ft2), which seems kinda "cosy", but is actually spacious for yacht cabins. All accommodations are decorated in soft colors and provide individual climate controls, LCDTVs, safes, hairdryers, minifridges, en-suite bathrooms with showers, sea views from either portholes or large windows. Beds can be double, queens or twins.

Shipboard facilities

The sunny weather of the standard itineraries of my Harmony V means a lot of time spent outside, whether at the outdoor bar, on a sun deck lounger, or utilizing a Marina Platform used for watersports activities (kayaks and snorkeling equipment are provided).

Indoors passengers will find a mini-spa, comfortable lounge with an adjacent bar and dining room which offers all meals in a single seating. Menu items reflect the region's cuisine. Breakfast and lunch are buffet-style affairs, while 3-course dinners boast table service. Cocktails and wine are available at additional cost.

Onboard entertainment is limited to the TV in the lounge and in staterooms (local channels only). The yacht offers Wi-Fi for an additional fee. A cruise coordinator provides shore excursion information and destination briefings. On the Western Africa itineraries, a naturalist gives lectures onboard.

VARIETY Cruises

Variety Cruises

Variety Cruises (formerly known as Zeus Casual Cruises) is one of the world’s largest small-ship cruise companies.

Founded in 1968, it’s still going strong with a fleet of 12 fully owned yachts carrying between 8 and 72 passengers on intimate voyages in warm-weather regions around the world. They often stay late in a given port if the nightlife and restaurant scene is worth exploring.

The fleet comprises eight motor yachts and sail-assisted motor sailers (34 to 72 passengers a piece), and four private yachts (with 5 or 6 cabins a piece). The entire Variety fleet is popular with private charter groups, including college alumni groups and travel companies that charter the vessels for photography, birdwatchers, wine, history, archeology and other themed cruises.

(The four private yachts are only sold as full-ship charters with a crew, while the eight larger vessels also operate scheduled cruises.)

When to Go?

Variety positions its fleet in the regions at the best time to be there.

Variety Cruises Cabins

Across the fleet, each cabin has a window or porthole, twin or a queen bed, and private bathrooms with branded toiletries and showers — some top suites have marble clad bathrooms.

All rooms have flat screen TVs, DVD players, mini fridges, individually controlled A/C, safes and Wi-Fi (for a fee). VARIETY VOYAGER also has robes for passengers’ use.

Variety Cruises Public Rooms

The interior spaces are sleek in elegant wood paneling and buttery leather upholstery. All the vessels have an indoor lounge, bar and dining area. Some of the larger vessels also have outdoor dining space and a second bar, mini spa, and a small library. The sundeck on each has loungers and/or sun beds and a swimming platform at the stern provides easy access for watersports.

Each boat carries aboard kayaks, and VARIETY VOYAGER and PANORAMA II also have stand-up paddle boards.

Variety Cruises Dining

All offer one, open seating in an indoor dining room for all meals; some ships also have outdoor seating. Breakfasts are buffet style, and lunch and/or dinners are a combination of buffet and a la carte services, with BBQs offered on deck and on shore from time to time.

Meals with an international appeal might include cream of asparagus soup and an endive and radicchio salad followed by a main course such as a smoked salmon fillet or roast veal, ending with something delicious and decadent like vanilla profiteroles drizzled with hot chocolate fudge.

Various dietary needs are happily accommodated.

Variety Cruises Activities & Entertainment

There are typically multiple swim stops throughout the week when passengers can hop into the water right from the vessels when at anchor in calm seas. Free snorkeling equipment is supplied on each boat. The ships stop at a port once per day, sometimes twice, and each carries one or two zodiacs for quick trips to shore.

Except for complimentary walking tours in the Seychelles, shore excursions are optional (for a fee) and the greatest number are offered on itineraries in Costa Rica, Cuba and Canary Islands, with fewer options in the Greek Isles where many passengers want to explore on their own.

Picnics on picturesque beaches are scheduled where possible.

Variety Cruises

When at sea, it’s all about cool drinks and sunbathing on deck, and on the largest ships (including VOYAGER, HARMONY V and PEGASOS), working in a visit to the mini spa or massage room.

There are a handful of theme cruises throughout the year usually in the Greek Isles with an archaeologist on board to lecture about various cultural and historical aspects of the destination.

On the Costa Rica and Panama cruises, a naturalist sails with the group and presents talks. Otherwise, all scheduled cruises have a cruise director on board to assist passengers with the optional excursions and to share port information, and sometimes there’s an additional lecturer as well.

Along the Same Lines

In Costa Rica and Panama numerous other lines though mostly larger not chartered vessels; in the Mediterranean there are numerous other operators with vessels to charter.

M/Y Harmony V - Variety Cruise line??

Cool Cruiser

I've searched the internet far and wide, and can't find a single photo of Variety Cruise's ship the M/Y Harmony V. Has anyone on here ever taken the Greek cruise with them on this yacht? Does this yacht even exsist?

Thier website only has computer annomated images of the vessel.

I found this page:

http://www.cruisingholidays.co.uk/greek-islands-cruises/harmony.htm

Apparently the Harmony V & Harmony G are sister ships. It does not say which vessel the photos are of. The Harmony V was built in 2008 so they may not have gotten around to posting photos of her on the English version of their web sites.

Hope this helps.

Thanks, but I think those are photos of the Harmony G, because the Harmony V's windows are different in the computer animated images on Variety's website.

I got photos emailed to me from Variety Cruises :)

  • 1 month later...

I just returned from a Variety Cruises sail that I booked months ago, to be on the Harmony V. One week before we were set to sail, we were told that the ship had been changed to the Harmony G for "technical reasons". We were assured that the ships were comparable. Well, if these ships were comporable, then there has been some serious use of photoshop going on. To make a long story short, the Harmony V is not in use. The staff on board said it was still in dry dock due to problems with governmental paperwork, although the picture above shows it in the water. I don't know what to believe at this point. I do know that other people on the boat booked the cruise two weeks before the sail date of 5/13/09 and were sold the Harmony V, not G. I would think they knew by then the Harmony V was not going to sail, but selected to keep that information quiet until the sale was made, although I can't be certain.

Interesting....

I got the photos from the NYC office, and do not know when the photos were taken.

Other than the switch in vessel, how was the cruise and the Harmony G?

I have the Classical Greece from Athens trip booked in July. I'd appreciated any advise or comments you could give.

camelia24ro

Hi. I've been on Harmony V, on the cruise from 31st of July and I definitely can say it was an amazing experience. We chose "Variety" cruise, because we preferred a smaller vessel to allow us enjoy the Greek islands and Greek atmosphere, without depending on fix hours and tenders use, etc. We've been 2 couples, but we met on board people from all over the world, US, Canada, Australia, Croatia, France, Spain or Malta. We had a great time. We all became friends, exchanged email addresses, and most important had lots of fun. Santorini is breathtaking, the sunset was one of the best moments of my life. As for Mikonos and the rest of the islands, words are not enough to express the beauty, the variety and the savour these places carry. I will reccommend to you all to go on this cruise, it's a life time experience, we already decided to try with them the cruise they have in the Red Sea this winter. The cabins are great, the food on board was delicious, and the personnel super friendly and nice. You will enjoy the outside areas, spacious and inviting. Check the photos for a hint(in the background we have caught also our yacht, Harmony V).

The Unique Burial of a Child of Early Scythian Time at the Cemetery of Saryg-Bulun (Tuva)

<< Previous page

Pages:  379-406

In 1988, the Tuvan Archaeological Expedition (led by M. E. Kilunovskaya and V. A. Semenov) discovered a unique burial of the early Iron Age at Saryg-Bulun in Central Tuva. There are two burial mounds of the Aldy-Bel culture dated by 7th century BC. Within the barrows, which adjoined one another, forming a figure-of-eight, there were discovered 7 burials, from which a representative collection of artifacts was recovered. Burial 5 was the most unique, it was found in a coffin made of a larch trunk, with a tightly closed lid. Due to the preservative properties of larch and lack of air access, the coffin contained a well-preserved mummy of a child with an accompanying set of grave goods. The interred individual retained the skin on his face and had a leather headdress painted with red pigment and a coat, sewn from jerboa fur. The coat was belted with a leather belt with bronze ornaments and buckles. Besides that, a leather quiver with arrows with the shafts decorated with painted ornaments, fully preserved battle pick and a bow were buried in the coffin. Unexpectedly, the full-genomic analysis, showed that the individual was female. This fact opens a new aspect in the study of the social history of the Scythian society and perhaps brings us back to the myth of the Amazons, discussed by Herodotus. Of course, this discovery is unique in its preservation for the Scythian culture of Tuva and requires careful study and conservation.

Keywords: Tuva, Early Iron Age, early Scythian period, Aldy-Bel culture, barrow, burial in the coffin, mummy, full genome sequencing, aDNA
