Choose from 5 trips in Kenya

Mel and Bayard Fox, founders of Equitours, began riding in the Masai Mara in 1979, taking summer guests from their Wyoming ranch. In the early years they guided the trips themselves and have been back many times. Mel was raised in East Africa, speaks fluent Swahili and is very familiar with the flora and fauna.

Kenya was the first Equitours ride overseas and remains a great favorite. Our horseback riding safaris in Kenya are without a doubt the most exciting and adventuresome of all our rides. Strong riders, confident at all paces on broken terrain while riding athletic horses will be in their element here. The opportunity to see big game and interact with wild animals on splendid horses is thrilling. Sometimes in the Masai Mara huge herds of wildebeest and zebra extend as far as the eye can see. The opportunity to see native tribesmen whose culture is dramatically different from ours in remote areas unspoiled by frequent tourist visits never fails to fascinate.

The mobile camps on all these safaris are surprisingly comfortable. The two person tents are spacious and the beds have sheets and blankets. The fresh food is well prepared and the service is excellent. Hot showers are available every evening.

One of the unforgettable memories of an African horse safari is the concert of night noises which accompany your dreams.  Often you can hear the plaintiff, lilting calls of a hunting pack of hyena in the distance and sometimes the deep, vibrating roar of a lion.  Most galvanizing of all is the sudden shriek of a harmless hyrax in a tree above your head.  There is always the murmuring, indistinguishable background noise of myriads of birds, animals and insects which lulls one to sleep.

Climate in Kenya

Kenya is equatorial, so there are not dramatic seasonal fluctuations. March is generally the hottest month.  There are two rainy seasons: November to mid-December and April to May. You may encounter unseasonal rains at other times, but these usually take the form of evening showers. Since the safari route is at elevations between six and eight thousand feet, the nights and early mornings are quite chilly and you will need a sweater and a jacket. The days are warm to hot, around 80 degrees, but there is usually a breeze.

Kenya Travel Tips

When is the best time to witness the migration in kenya.

The Mara-Serengeti ecosystem is unique for many reasons. It supports the last great wild herds of large herbivores left on the planet. Figures and estimates vary but there are well over 1 million wildebeest and maybe 300,000 zebra that migrate in two distinct areas and 200,000 other large herbivores add to the variety. Cape buffalo, giraffe, eland, topi, hartebeest, impala, waterbuck, warthog, and two types of gazelle are very prevalent in the Mara and migrate much less if not completely sedentary, especially in the Mara ecosystem. When you add the elephant and hippo as the largest herbivores plus the extraordinary list of predators who feed on them all, you have an awesome wildlife spectacle.

The two migrations are distinct in that the smaller one called the Loita migration stays in Kenya and our Masai Mara’s riding route follows its whole range. It may be encountered on any month of the year. The greater migration, which is better known, does a large clockwise circle, which is constantly on the move.

The north of the Mara has a higher rainfall than most of the Serengeti, which therefore supports more bush, and a greater density of permanent herbivores. The big Serengeti herds come to Kenya in approximately June/July and move back and forth before finally departing back to Tanzania in late October. They are famous for their sheer numbers and of course their crossing and re-crossing of the Mara River to seek fresh pasture. To ride amongst them is bliss.

All the wildebeest calve in a three week period in February/March. The Serengeti herds on the flat plains in the south of their range, which is a great spectacle, and the northern herds on the Loita Plains to the north east of the Mara, from which they take their name. The whole range of both migrations is perhaps 150 miles north- south and 60 miles east-west.

Rainfall patterns throughout the year dictate the extent and timing of the wildebeest movements and are as variable as the weather. Therefore nobody can predict with any authority where they will be and when, apart from the above guidelines.

Suffice to say that the Mara with two distinct groups is likely to have thousands of animals in the area at any one time. There may be a preponderance of zebra or wildebeest but numbers are always impressive. Elephant also favour the northern areas for the extra bush and fodder that the higher rainfall brings. In conclusion therefore, there is no better or worse time to come. It may rain or be very dry but at 1700 meters (5500 ft.) the climate is always bearable and wonderful game viewing is almost guaranteed.

Safaris Unlimited Africa Kenya Horseback Wildlife Safaris

KENYA HORESBACK SAFARIS

Safari on the back of a horse is unlike any other kind of safari. With our steady, well loved and expertly schooled horses you will feel both secure and at one with the landscape. On our horseback safaris in Kenya, we require all our riders to be competent and confident at all paces; surprises in the bush cannot be predicted. Every day will see a plethora of wildlife: impala trotting alongside us, wildebeest whirling away, giraffe lolloping off in any direction and zebra calmly cantering into the distance. Vistas are always enormous, the wide African sky impossibly huge, and the horizon distant and hovering in the midday heat. It is a feeling of utter freedom and a return to existing as a human in harmony with the environment.

HORSES & TACK

Our stable is home to over 25 safari horses – a mixture of Percheron-Boerperd, Friesian-Boerperd, Arab-French-Somali crossbreds, Appaloosas and Thoroughbreds. The majority of these horses have been bred and raised at home on our wildlife conservancy in central Kenya. Living at close quarters with wild animals, our horses are comfortable riding amongst big game, have great endurance levels and are evenly tempered. Under the professional guidance of Felicia and her team of grooms, each safari horse is carefully schooled, exercised and loved for the sole purpose of carrying our guests safely through the African wilderness. We ride in the English style using very comfortable English general–purpose saddles. We ride between 4 to 6 hours a day, covering 20 to 30 kilometres. Full days of riding when we move camp are alternated with days where we ride out from camp and return for lunch and a siesta in the afternoon. Our weight limit is 90 kgs (200 lbs or 14 st) Heavier riders may be accommodated,  subject to horse availalbitly and prior arranemgment. We accommodate riding groups of 1 to 12 guests. All riders must be confident at all paces, have an intermediate level of fitness and riding ability, and have a sense of adventure. We regret that we are unable to accept beginners.

PACKING LIST       STABLE OF HORSES

  • WHERE WE RIDE

Our horse riding safaris in Kenya are operated in the most game-rich wilderness locations on the continent, in some of the largest unfenced expanses in Africa. Far from civilization, the sense of space and freedom is overwhelming. These areas offer great diversity of wildlife species, birdlife and scenery. These savannah’s are also home to the Masai and Samburu people, who roam the area with their herds of livestock.

MASAI MARA Altitude 5,000 – 6,500 ft. Area c. 5,000 sq. kms.

The beauty of the greater Mara Conservancies has come to represent the epitome of East Africa. The landscape is one of rolling savannah and acacia woodland, intersected by dark green veins of riverine forest on the banks of the Mara and Olare Orok rivers. This wilderness is an extension of the Serengeti (Tanzania) ecosystem and is considered to be Kenya's best wildlife sanctuary, where animals can still be seen in vast numbers. Carnivores, antelopes, primates and rodents are some of the mammals to be found. The annual migration of up to one million wildebeest is thrillingly dramatic and considered to be one of the greatest wildlife spectacles in the world. Needless to say, the flora, fauna and birdlife are phenomenal. The Mara is also home to the colourful and handsome Masai people who, with their herds of livestock, are synonymous with the region.

LAIKIPIA Altitude 4,000 – 7,500 ft. Area c. 9,500 sq. kms.

Laikipia is a vast expanse of wild country in the central highlands of Kenya. It stretches from the snow-capped peaks of Mount Kenya in the east, across the equator to the Great Rift Valley in the west. The landscape is physically diverse with open grasslands, basalt hills, escarpments, rivers and dense forests. It is widely accredited as one of Kenya’s premier safari destinations, the combination of abundant wildlife and exceptional scenic beauty providing the basis for Laikipia’s unique and high quality tourism. Wildlife is free to roam between the surrounding conservancies, ranches and community lands into Kenya’s northern rangelands. High levels of community involvement and participation allow visitors privileged access to the ethnically diverse cultures of the Mukogodo Masai, Samburu, Pokot and other peoples.

ITINERARIES, DATES & RATES

Our African horse safaris are designed entirely around the wishes of our guests, riding over a country that is home to abundant wildlife, framed by endless panoramas. The speed, distance and nature of our rides depend entirely on the dynamics of each group. Because of the sheer multitude of wild animals to be seen, our bespoke horse riding safaris typically alternate between days riding out from our mobile camp and days on the move. This means we ride into new country every day, and on move days, we might cover between 20 to 30 kilometres. While our skilled crew break and move camp, we ride on horseback to meet them in the late afternoon. Aside from being a unique way to view wildlife, a horseback safari is also one of the most environmentally friendly ways of going on safari. In the event that any of our guests feel a little saddle sore, our four by four safari vehicles are on stand by to take them on game drives. Traditionally, most of our safaris cater for private parties, however we operate a select number of ‘set departure’ rides, on which guests are invited to join a group of other like-minded riders. We offer these on a limited number of set dates throughout the year.

Tailor Made Safaris

Popular safaris, east & central africa, southern africa, set departures, top destinations, indian ocean islands, sample trip, the kenyan horseback adventure, “embark on a journey of a different kind and explore three wild corners of kenya in the most natural and exciting way, on horseback”, safari rating, itinerary in brief.

2 Nights Ol Donyo

2 Nights Lewa Wilderness

3 Nights Ol Malo Ranch

Ol Donyo Horse Riding and Giraffes

Immerse yourself in nature and discover the area’s flora and fauna as you safari in the most authentic way. Replace the rumble of a motor vehicle with the gentle sound of hooves on bare earth.

Your journey begins in southeast Kenya, in the heart of the Chyulu Hills. Nestled in a beautiful mountain range, Ol Donyo Lodge offers breathtaking views of a landscape of open steppes and lush green hills with majestic Kilimanjaro in the background. This area offers the perfect conditions for a riding safari. The wide plains invite you to take extensive gallops and thanks to your environmentally friendly transport, you have the opportunity to explore   nature off the beaten track. This gives you greater chance to observe the natural behaviour of giraffe, zebra, countless antelope and with a little luck some of the last ‘big tusker’ elephants up close. The tourist density here is still very low, and big cats such as lions may also be found.

Thanks to the perfectly trained and very experienced horses, the rides are suitable for all riders; whether beginner, intermediate or advanced, riders will all have a wonderful, tailored experience.

From here you continue to Lewa Wilderness Lodge . The lodge is near Mount Kenya, Africa’s second-highest mountain, in the middle of the Lewa Wildlife Nature Reserve. The reserve is home to the ‘Big 5’ and importantly the very rare black rhino is still found here. Every type of rider will find what they are looking for at Lewa. Beginner riders are transported safely through the wild thanks to the experienced safari horses and have the chance to ride close to wild animals such as giraffes, impala, eland, ostriches and baboons.

For the experienced rider, there is the possibility to participate in more challenging rides and to ride in areas where the ‘Big 5’ of African animals are found. Or for a special highlight, go on a camel ride led by a Maasai warrior through the wilderness. This is a ride of a special kind.

The last stop of the journey takes you to Ol Malo Ranch , in northern Laikipia province. You will spend 3 nights here and have plenty of time to explore this part of northern Kenya on the back of a trusty safari horse. Exciting highlights such as a visit to a Samburu manyatta (village) or an overnight stay in the lodge’s treehouse with the twinkling night sky above you await. Here, too, all riding activities are suitable for beginners through to experienced riders and will be adapted to suit your level. The Laikipia region, where you will be riding, is uniquely beautiful and its location at about 2000 metres above sea level distinguishes it from the parts of Kenya that you have already come to know. You will find denser and hillier landscapes, crossed by impressive mountains, green forests and wide steppes. The density of wildlife is especially high and with some luck, the black rhino can be found.

If you feel that 3 more days in the saddle are too many, you can choose to partake in alternative activities such as bushwalks, camel rides or game drives, also at night.

This safari offers the perfect mix of luxury and adventure while giving you insight into several of Kenya’s wild areas. Thanks to well-trained horses, the programme is flexible and suitable for a beginner as well as an experienced rider.

About Kenya Riding Safaris

As the birthplace of the African horse safari, Kenya offers unparalleled opportunities for horse riding.

The country boasts a huge variety of safari experiences; from luxury high-end lodge-stays, to fly-camping and nights spent dining and sleeping under the stars.

It is possible to ride amongst the world famous Great Migration in the Mara Conservation area – herds of wildebeest and zebra with their ever present predators in attendance.   Alternatively head to the Laikipia Plateau, private ranch-land crawling with wildlife where the sense of freedom is palpable. Other options include the Chyulu Hills in the shadow of Kilimanjaro or to trek on horseback around Mount Kenya.

Riders and non-riders, families, couples, groups and solo adventurers alike, there is something for everyone in Kenya. Intermediate riders and families can head for more open country where the chance of coming across a predator unexpectedly is less likely.

BEST TIME FOR RIDING SAFARIS IN KENYA

Kenya has a complicated and rather unpredictable weather pattern; as a general rule January to March is hot and dry; April to June is hot and wet (“the long rains”). July to October is very warm and dry, then comes the “short rains” from November into December which are warm and wet.

At high altitudes rain can fall at any time of year. Temperatures are determined largely by altitude – you can reckon on a drop of 6C for every 1,000m you climb above sea level.

July and August are possibly the best months overall for game-viewing, although if you have a specific quarry in mind, for instance Wild Dog, you may want to look at a time they are likely to have finished denning and the young are starting to hunt (November and December have been terrific for this on Laikipia in recent years).

In the far desert north of the country, temperatures year round seldom dip below 35C so a spot of rain can be very welcome indeed in terms of taking the edge off the heat.

Not much of a horse rider? Head out on a walking safari with an experienced guide instead, and camp out overnight at our beautiful fly camp.

kenya safari on horseback

We’ll leave in the early afternoon, after a delicious lunch at the lodge and once the sun has started to slightly cool off.

Riding into the wilderness, we’ll explore the conservancy and its many hills and valleys, in search for our camp for the night.

Once we have arrived at camp, the horses are comfortably tied to a picket line for the evening, while your home for the night awaits!

Rising with the sun, we fuel up on tea or coffee and then set off back to the lodge for a well deserved breakfast, and a refreshing dip in the pool!

Whirlwind has been guiding horseback safaris since a young age, she started her career down in the Chyulus before coming to us. Safari is second nature to this mare and she is one of the best spotters that we have in the yard.

Horse Safaris Kenya

Born and bred at Lewa Wilderness, Bally catches everybody’s eye (regardless of being the whitest horse in the yard). This Cinderella pony will dutifully carry anybody as close to the animals as she can get.

Serene, just as her name suggests. Originally form South Africa, she has played polo with every Craig family member, following the ball without assistance and rarely putting a foot wrong. She now embodies the same technique with the wildlife.

Horse Safaris Kenya

Retired from polo to grow old gracefully, Superstar refuses to act her age and insists on being at the front of every ride and leading first across any obstacle. She is the definition of a chestnut mare, and despite all the grumbling and face pulling is one of the bravest horses that we have.

Horse Safaris Kenya

Coming from a successful racing background in Nairobi, Fire knew little about the African wildlife after growing up in the city. Despite losing the majority of vision in his left eye, this determined Thoroughbred will not let anything slow him down and has taken to life on safari like an Egyptian goose to water.

Horse Safaris Kenya

The perfect gentleman who is always calm, cool and collected in the face of most events. With his rocking horse canter, Kaskazi will happily cruise along the track at any speed you wish.

One of our hardest working horses. Princess is a firm favourite with our guides to lead the daily beginner rides from the lodge, therefore she loves any opportunity to pick up the pace and go exploring.

The perfect hybrid - we think! A combination of Sirai Stud’s stunning friesian x boerperd stallion and one of our sweetest homebred polo ponies. We can’t wait for this little colt to grow up and see where he takes us.

Horse Safaris Kenya

Daughter to a feisty racehorse, Zambezi tried her hand at polo before she grew a little bit too tall for the sport and decided that safaris were a much better game. She is the tall, leggy queen of the yard and likes everyone to know it!

See Kenya’s wildlife in a different light: on horseback

Riders can encounter leopards, rhinos, or zebras on these intimate safaris in Kenya's Borana Conservancy.

Guide Hamprey Mweterwa (center on white horse) leads a group on a safari in Kenya’s Borana Conservancy

The equatorial sun is relentless, bearing down as I lead Elaine, a walnut bay with a dark mane, through thorny acacia and dense shrub. It’s been a long day in the saddle. My thighs ache and our camp beckons across a ridge of ancient folding hills in the Lolldaiga Range of northern Kenya , a mosaic of intertwined landscapes and communities.

Suddenly Elaine’s ears flick into alert, antenna-like, and the muscles of her body tense beneath me. Our guide Nicholus Nangunye Tuta stretches out a lean arm toward a bush just meters away. My eyes focus, straining to see what the others already have: two amber orbs glowing from a shadowed form. It’s a young lion, quick and strong, crouched amid the high grass.

A wild silence hangs between us. Without the defensive armor and high wheels of a safari vehicle, I feel completely exposed. Peering into the bush, I’m suspended between wonder and terror, the distance between myself and the savannah’s most notorious predator laughably small. Usually, I’m the one tracking the lion, camera in hand. Now, the lion shifts in my consciousness from object to subject. I shift, too, acutely aware of the soft flesh of my own body.

An aerial view of riders galloping over a hill in Borana Conservancy, Kenya

Nicholus nods his head in the other direction, a safer distance away. He points to indentations in the dust. “Look, this is a big lion, and these are young ones, some cubs,” he says. “Probably a mother.” Pawprints mottle the earth, each telling the story of more lions, moving in different directions. It was time to go.

( Horseback riding in Kenya is one of 20 best travel experiences for 2024. See the full list here .)

In the country where they started in the 1970s, horseback safaris are still the most immersive way to view wildlife in Kenya. To journey on horseback is to break down the walls—meant to protect, but also to separate us from the natural world. And as we’re absorbed in the thrill of the experience, we’re vividly reminded of the importance of protecting these wild spaces.

Out here your horse is your translator, responding to the low hiss of a leopard, the soft scent of an elephant herd, the cool morning breeze descending from Mount Kenya’s glacial peaks. Your job is to learn how to listen.

Safari tourism and conservation

Saddling up the next morning, we fall into a nose-to-tail line, murmurs of conversation fading as we enter the light-dappled mountain forest. African olive trees stretch out between sentinel-like cedar, and wild orchids root amid the branches. It looks like challenging terrain to navigate, but this trail was blazed by grazing elephants and meanders through the trees with the crooked, effortless sweep of a river.

A view across the Lolldaiga Hills, Kenya

Around a corner the rough-hewn outline of Mount Kenya appears. Three million years ago this singular volcano was birthed from the Earth’s core, rising to 23,000 feet before time wore it down. Known first as Kirinyaga by the Kikuyu, who lived at its feet and considered it sacred, Mount Kenya is the highest mountain in the country that became its namesake.

Ice still sparkles off its basalt peaks, even though, as our planet has warmed over the last 80 years, its once mighty glacier has shrunk by 90 percent. The lush volcanic greenery of the country’s center fades here to a more austere beauty of sparse woods, arid plains, and isolated mountains. Crops yield to cows.

( This is the future of safaris in Africa .)

Like many conservancies in Kenya,   Borana began as a cattle ranch, though its land was used to sustain livestock long before that. For thousands of years, cows were the center of culture and currency for the Maasai, Samburu, Pokot, and other pastoral groups. When national parks and conservancies began to be established in the middle of the 20th century, these same groups routinely found themselves barred from grazing their animals on land they had relied on for generations.   Borana now aims for deeper engagement with its neighbors, with outreach programs such as Mazingira Yetu , or “our environment” in Kiswahili, that promote environmental stewardship. Students from nearby communities can spend a day at the conservancy, go on game drives, meet Borana’s rangers, and learn more about sustainable land practices, including water storage, regenerative farming, and tree nurseries. The program launched in 2022, bringing 365 students to Borana, but has grown to welcome more than 1,100 students in 2023.

( Here are five game drive alternatives, from cycling to camping .) Borana reinvests all profits into conservation efforts like this one, and it’s made a difference: Last year tourism generated over $1 million, leading to the protection of 28 endangered species, the training of 114 rangers, scholarships for 55 students, and drought relief to seven communities. But there’s a necessary, and growing, recognition that change doesn’t happen in isolation, and that long-term efforts to protect wildlife require a shared vision across borders, communities, and interests.

A mother and calf southern white rhinoceros graze at dusk on Borana Conservancy, one of Kenya’s newest and most successful rhino sanctuaries

An encounter with rhinos

On my final day in Borana, Elaine and I crest a hill, and I notice her aloof, walnut-hued eyes clock two grey masses moving just ahead. It’s a rhino calf and its mother, who moves languidly forward to place herself between us and her young.

Elaine pauses, the two locked in a mutual gaze. Evolution is a funny thing: These two animals are each other’s closest living relatives. The distant cousins seem to come to a cautious truce. We maintain our distance; the rhinos continue grazing. I relax in the saddle and find my attention shifting from the obvious differences between these creatures to the subtle hints of shared lineage: their soulful eyes, strong jaws, and loping gait.

kenya safari on horseback

The diversity of our natural world is a wonder, and there is so much to learn from its infinite contrasts—and unexpected connections. As the sun falls behind the hill, I nudge Elaine. She turns away from the now thoroughly unbothered rhinos and we head back home.

  • DESCRIPTION

Private journey through the laikipia plains and plateaus.

Those who embark in this journey dare cross one of the most important savannahs in Africa, with everything this implies: lions, elephants, buffaloes, giraffes and hippopotamus watched from a very close distance. Given that the lands are private property, there is no possibility of running into other riders, which makes this a really exclusive experience. The adventure will take place under the presence of Mount Kenya, the second highest and magnificent mountain in Africa.

kenya safari on horseback

Day 1. We have to ride carefully: we will pass close to elephants, rhinos, lions, leopards and buffaloes.

We land in Borana, a ranch located in a virgin farm, in the Northern hillside of Kenia Mount, with beautifully snowed peaks on the South mountains. We have to ride carefully: we will pass close to elephants, rhinos, lions, leopards and buffaloes, as well as other species, such as Grevy's zebras, Somali ostriches, reticulated giraffes and other eccentric species. We will have lunch at the camp in a euphorbia forest while we get ready for the adventure.

Day 2. Fauna in movement and the horizon in the distance.

We spend the whole day exploring Borana, either on a horse or on the pickup. We will have a picnic near the Ngare Ndare river. Borana is at the highest point of the escarpment. From the top of it, the outlook is breathtaking: we submerge in the game viewing, fauna in movement, the horizon seen at the far end, that natural green from one of the best areas of Africa. The fact that Borana is a private refuge makes this experience unique, we will be all alone, no other riders in the area.

Day 3. Busy day.

We start our day by moving our bodies and horses. We will head West, passing across peculiar granite rocks, known by natives as kopje, and swine forests. We will reach Lolldaiga Hills, one of the best private farms in Africa. The camp is settled in a valley surrounded by swines. We will stay there for the 2 following days.

Day 4. Horse riding through the Northern lands.

We will saddle up our horses to start our journey towards the Northern lands, taking a picnic to have lunch on our pickup. At some point during the afternoon, we will reach the West border of the Lolldaiga Hills, where we will be able to contemplate the Laikipia plateau, a land known for its exotic fauna, which we will cross the following 2 days.

Day 5. A hidden valley where elephants and buffaloes feel free.

We will leave the Lolldaiga hills and head towards the Karama. In order tp accomplish this part of the journey, we will need to predispose our souls and horses since we will cross 4 ranches, valleys and rivers until we submerge ourselves in a hidden valley where elephants and buffaloes are at ease. We will make a stop here and have a picnic near the bank of the Nanyuki river. We will then cross this river towards El Karama, a private ranch where we will be able to watch animals in their natural habitat, resting, looking for food, nature at its greatest. Our journey continues until we reach the Ewaso Ng'iro river.

Day 6. Traction and strength to ride into the river.

We explore the zone. For those who are not afraid to explore their own limits, we penetrate the river together with our horses, based on our traction and strength, or as a second choice, we may find our way on our pickup. In any case, we cannot lose the chance to watch the autochthonous fauna moving at the edge of the river, such as Grevy's zebras, Jackson wildebeests, elephants, giraffes and hippopotamus.

Day 7. A journey worth of its reward.

An intense day of cavalcade. We head to Sosia, a place characterized by waterfalls and refreshing feelings. However, in order to be rewarded by this, we will first need to go through a journey worth of this reward: we will cross the Ewaso Narok river and through the Segera ranch towards the Northeast. Our path will take us through the valley of the Sugoroi river and the cotton plains, where we will encounter with patas monkeys, a rare species for the African savannahs.

Day 8. Grevy's zebras, giraffes, lions, hippopotamus, and buffaloes.

For those who have saved the energy, we will ride our horses for the entire day, or we can choose to use our pickups, to go around this paradisiac area in which the most exotic species interact -a spectacle worth watching-: Grevy's zebras, giraffes, lions, hippopotamus and buffaloes. That great mountain, Kenya Mount, the second highest mountain in Africa, is now behind us and we can watch it from afar.

Day 9. Farewell.

Our last horse ride. We say goodbye to our loyal partners in this journey, our horses. We have breakfast in Sosian before returning to the Nairobi airport.

Best Places To Go For Horseback Safaris In Kenya

Horseback safari concepts in Kenya started way back in the 1970s when ranchers would tour their then wild ranches on horses and have a spectacular view of wild animals which inhabited their ranches. Many people still fancy horseback safaris and Kenya offers just the best opportunity to have a spectacular view of wildlife on a horseback.

You can be in for luck and gallop with wildebeests and zebras as the cool wild breeze blows across your face. Horseback safaris come in two types. You can choose a centre based lodge rise which is facilitated by your lodge or the traditional mobile tented camp which follow you in caravans as you ride your horses in the Mara.

Here are some of the best places to go for horseback safaris in Kenya.

1. The Mara

Maasai Mara is an iconic place to explore while on horseback. You also get to stay in luxurious tented camps when dusk falls in the heart of the magical reserve. This package is good for riders and non-riders in the same group because riders can saddle on horses while non-riders can follow them in caravans with camping tents. Riders here can experience fast-paced canters and breathtaking river crossings as they meet nature in its full elements in the Mara. You get to be closer to wildlife than you will ever be while in a tour van.

2. Borana Lodge

This is a family-run and owned lodge by the Dyer family which is situated in the foothills of Mt Kenya and adjacent to Lewa Wildlife Conservancy. It has been around since 1993. Borana Lodge is set against a beautiful hillside with an organic design and panoramic views throughout. Its is famous for its horse riding adventures, but exploring the surrounding bush in Land Rovers is equally exciting. The ranch is perfect for picnics, sun-downers on Pride Rock (the original inspiration for Disney’s Lion King), and bush dinners.

3. Sanctuary Farm; Lake Naivasha

Riding on Sanctuary Farm is an experience beyond belief.  Where you can get even closer to the game as they don’t seem to recognize you as a person they only see the four legs carrying you. You can be led or ride on your own in the sanctuary but you will always be accompanied on an adventure you will never forget. There are no predators in the areas where you will ride and all horse safaris are accompanied by two or more guides.

4. Ol Donyo Lodge

The Ol Donyo Lodge sits within 275,000-acres of Maasai-owned land known as the Mbirikani Group Ranch where views of Mt. Kilimanjaro are within reach just over the border in Tanzania. Ol Donyo lodge brings an exquisite immersion into the Mara that is unrivalled among safari choices. Riding like the wind on horseback through untouched expanse while slowly taking in Africa on her terms with all manner of nature and animal encounters to sleeping in sublime comfort among the stars as the lions roar and bright-eyed bush babies wail is just breathtaking.

5. Ol Maro Ranch

Found in the deserts of Samburuland, this 5,000-acre family-owned conservation site offers endless fun and is a perfect holiday getaway destination. You get to go for game drives and picnics to riding, walking, fishing, medicinal plant walks and learning how to survive like a Samburu. With a perfect landscape for horse riding and sure-footed homebred push ponies, you get to enjoy wandering in Nothern Kenya having beautiful wild views, harsh rock outcrops and cool acacia lined up the riverbeds and of course a close canter near wildlife.

6. Lewa Safari Camp

Lewa Safari Camp offers evening horse rides. You can get very close to plains game as they see you as one of their own! Horse riding is for experienced riders only, as although it is a gentle walk on very well behaved horses, you are in the wild, and need to be able to bring a situation under control when horses are spooked. Horse riding is subject to availability and there is an additional charge. Riders are usually requested to fill out a questionnaire to ascertain their competency.

Lewa Safari Camp also offers evening camel rides.

7. Sarara Camp

Sarara Camp is located in Namunyak Wildlife conservancy. With thousands of acres of lowland plains and wooded hills to explore, plus the greater expanse of the Namunyak Wildlife Conservancy virtually at your doorstep, a horseback safari will suffice in exploring this great area. You get to ride a sturdy bush pony into the mountains along elephant pathways or venture to a scenic spot for a sundowner you won’t soon forget in guided horseback safaris.

kenya safari on horseback

8. Solio Lodge

Solio Lodge is located on a private wildlife sanctuary, tucked in the valley between the lofty slopes of Mount Kenya and the peaks of the Aberdare Mountains, directly north of Nairobi. It offers just the perfect place to go for horseback rides in the vast expanse in guided horseback safaris.
