It seems that the more places I see and experience, the bigger I realize the world to be. The more I become aware of, the more I realize how relatively little I know of it, how many places I have still to go, how much more there is to learn.   Maybe that’s enlightenment enough – to know that there is no final resting place of the mind, no moment of smug clarity. Perhaps wisdom, at least for me, means realizing how small I am, and unwise, and how far I have yet to go.

I think food, culture, people and landscape are all absolutely inseparable.

Food is everything we are. It’s an extension of nationalist feeling, ethnic feeling, your personal history, your province, your region, your tribe, your grandma. It’s inseparable from those from the get-go.

Southeast Asia has a real grip on me. From the very first time I went there, it was a fulfillment of my childhood fantasies of the way travel should be.

I wanted adventures. I wanted to go up the Nung river to the heart of darkness in Cambodia . I wanted to ride out into a desert on camelback, sand and dunes in every direction, eat whole roasted lamb with my fingers. I wanted to kick snow off my boots in a Mafiya nightclub in Russia. I wanted to play with automatic weapons in Phnom Penh, recapture the past in a small oyster village in France, step into a seedy neon-lit pulqueria in rural Mexico. I wanted to run roadblocks in the middle of the night, blowing past angry militia with a handful of hurled Marlboro packs, experience fear, excitement, wonder.   I wanted kicks – the kind of melodramatic thrills and chills I’d yearned for since childhood, the kind of adventure I’d found as a little boy in the pages of my Tintin comic books. I wanted to see the world – and I wanted the world to be just like the movies.

At this point I think my body is like an old car. Another dent ain’t gonna make a whole lot of difference. At best it’s a reminder that you’re still alive and lucky as hell. Another tattoo, another thing you did, another place you’ve been.

I think when you travel as much as I have, I don’t want to say I’m more humble, but I think you become aware of how other people live, how hard their lives are, how big the world is.

I have seen firsthand that things can turn on a dime. Tremendously awful, evil things happen to nice people all the time. I have seen people, again and again, relentlessly grinding under the wheel of poverty or oppression. At the same time, I see random acts of kindness and pride in the most outrageous and most unexpected circumstances. I am grateful. I understand that I am very privileged to see what I am seeing, even when it hurts. I think that people, particularly Americans, need to be more inspired to travel and be adventurous with the things they eat. And if they are curious about the world and willing to walk in somebody else’s shoes—that is surely a good thing.

Without experimentation, a willingness to ask questions and try new things, we shall surely become static, repetitive, and moribund.

Who wouldn’t travel, if they could? It’s unthinkable to me. Who wouldn’t want to enjoy different, new sensations, especially when the world is filled with so much great stuff? I like new things. I like to feel good. I like learning about stuff. It makes me happy. I like being wrong about stuff.

If I’m an advocate for anything, it’s to move. As far as you can, as much as you can. Across the ocean, or simply across the river. The extent to which you can walk in someone else’s shoes or at least eat their food, it’s a plus for everybody. Open your mind, get up off the couch, move.

Travel isn’t always pretty. It isn’t always comfortable. Sometimes it hurts, it even breaks your heart. But that’s okay. The journey changes you; it should change you. It leaves marks on your memory, on your consciousness, on your heart, and on your body. You take something with you. Hopefully, you leave something good behind.

Travel Happy: How to Be a More Joyful Traveler

Follow these expert tips to cultivate joy during your next trip—and long after returning home.

In my personal and professional experience as a life coach, joy is found wherever you get completely enveloped in an experience, when you’ve really lost yourself: your worries, your ego, your past, and your future. Travel is the perfect time for this reboot. It’s also an opportunity to step outside your comfort zone, explore new approaches to life, and form new habits.

Below are some insights into how you push your limits to really lose yourself in the travel experience, and cultivate more joy in the process. Then take the ethos behind these joy-inducing activities back to your daily life at home.

Lose Yourself in the Music

In Fiji last summer, I donned a sulu —a sarong-type garment both men and women wear—and danced the nights away in the village where I was staying on the southern tip of Taveuni , known as the Garden Island of Fiji. Never underestimate the power of dance. I was sweaty and a little uncomfortable, but I made friends shaking it with what seemed like absolutely everyone in the community. I danced with old women and men, too. I moved my hips enough that I had to constantly retie my sulu until a local helped me to tie it properly. Certainly I looked funny at times. My ego told me to stop. What’s really special is when you can push through any discomfort or self-consciousness to truly lose yourself in the moment.

Coaching Takeaway: Whether you are traveling or in your own environs, see where you can re-create this experience and take advantage of the smile-inducing, heart-rate rising, feel-good activity of dancing with abandon.

Connect Deeply With Others

Create real, true, deep connections. Introduce yourself to an elderly person. Make a new best friend. Get so connected with someone you will feel like their home is your home and vice versa. Learn as much as you can about who they are, and be willing to share yourself, too. When language barriers get in your way, there’s always a possibility of communicating with a translator or simply communicating deeply through other means—it doesn’t have to be spoken language. Don’t miss these kinds of opportunities; they can lead to doors opening that offer you something entirely unique, like when I attended a traditional wedding in the heart of South Africa’s Zululand at the invitation of a friend of a friend of the security guard at my residence.

Coaching Takeaway: Creating meaningful connections with people while traveling will help you deepen and expand your capacity to empathize with people in your world. This, in turn, will help you create more authentic, connected relationships in your family, your romantic life, and even in your workplace.

Help a Brother Out

On the coast of Mozambique , while my travel mates went out diving with whale sharks, my forgetfulness bit me in the butt. I had not packed my diver certification card, so I was left land-bound. With nothing else to do, I drove into town and, on the way, picked up some locals walking in from their villages. I decided to spend the day helping one run his errands. My rental car was a boon for him. We shopped for vegetables at the local market, made a visit to the clinic, negotiated on his wages with his boss at his job, and visited his young son. Using my day to explore the local scene and help this man sort out his problems helped me remove myself from my own. Whether it is a formal volunteer opportunity or something more spontaneous, help out others whenever possible to access a deeper level of joy within yourself. It gives us access to our highest selves.

Coaching Takeaway: You already provide service to your family or in the workplace while at home. See where you can go further and push your comfort zone of helping others. Look for opportunities while traveling to get this habit started.

Step Blindly Off a Cliff

Don’t do this literally. Figuratively, I am speaking about stepping out into the unknown. This must be practiced. Our natural inclination as humans is toward survival and comfort. We avoid the unknown. Find an experience on your trip that truly feels like stepping out into the unknown. This might be showing up somewhere with no itinerary or staying in a local’s home, if lucky enough to get invited. Or step off the side of a plane (parachute attached). It is going to look different for everyone. What is comfortable for one person is wildly uncomfortable to another. Personally, having no plans tends to make me a bit anxious. I have to practice being with the unknown and the unplanned. Doing so helps me expand my repertoire of how to deal with situations out of my control, quash the anxiety, and create more space for joy.

Coaching Takeaway: The landscape beyond our comfort zones is where we discover new things about ourselves, where we expand and grow. Challenge yourself while on your travels, then take the practice home. Be safe, be culturally sensitive, but be bold.

Engage the Senses

You may already be a person who lives by the adage of stopping to smell the roses. But life is a busy vixen. She is full of tricks and turns to throw us off our game. Our ability to be truly present erodes over time. Travel is a great opportunity to hit the reset button, and once we’ve reset we have the luxury of engaging our senses to practice being present. This can look a lot of different ways, but a simple exercise is to practice a different sense each day. Keep a sense journal and, on day one, inventory the smells that infiltrate your olfactory receptors. Then work through the others.

Coaching Takeaway: Re-upping your skills of being present is actually a meditative exercise to clear your mind, and in a clear mind joy has room to bubble up and spread within and outside of us.

Unpack the Story of Food

Food is a cultural staple. Every place you will visit has a food story and things that make the geography unique from a culinary standpoint. While cooking a large meal for a group at a ski lodge in the Southern Alps of New Zealand , I made new friends and learned heaps on the sheep-farming industry, all while cooking lamb steaks on the grill. Use food as your foray into learning about the ingredients, traditions, and techniques that make a place special. Curiosity and learning stimulate the brain and underpin creativity, which in turn can lead to joy.

Coaching Takeaway: Cooking is a way to practice presence and truly be in the moment, making yourself available for learning, laughter, and creativity. Taking time to learn and enjoy the process from beginning to end will be sure to raise our joy factor a few degrees.

Start With Yourself

Here you are. Right here, right now. Your joy matters. The world needs a lot more of it, and your capacity to cultivate it within you directly translates to creating a space for happiness around you. While on the plane or train traveling to your destination, make a list of joy-blockers. Note that we are not talking simply about the things that make you smile or laugh. Joy is that deep contentment and lasting happiness that you can call upon within yourself even in the most troubling of circumstances. Take a look at what factors, beliefs, and circumstances rob you of your joy. While you are out experiencing your destination, work through your list of joy-blockers and see what action there is or what support you might need to bypass them.

Coaching Takeaway: Joy is really something you can actively cultivate, so use your next chunk of travel time to create this garden for yourself and share the bounty with others.

Which are the happiest countries in the world? How does travel make you happy? Why does planning a trip improve your quality of life? We’ve done some investigating

Travel is one thing that makes pretty much everyone happy. It’s exciting to see new countries and experience new things. Indeed, some of our happiest and most vibrant memories come from traveling; even years later, it’s something to look back on and smile about. But which places see themselves as the happiest and why? Why does travel excite us so much? Read on to find out.

Which are the happiest countries in the world?

Every year since 2012, the United Nations Sustainable Development Solutions Network has published its World Happiness Report . It’s a survey to see which countries are the happiest and on what bases (spoiler: basically being socially conscious and environmentally sound, and striving for equality). The most recent top 10 were:

Topping the list for five years in a row now, Finland ’s accessible culture, beautiful landscapes, safe cities and laid-back lifestyle make a winning combination. Take a walk in the forest, swim in a lake, eat fresh fruit — it’s the simple things.

The hygge -bringers cite eco-friendliness, sustainability and community as their strongest attributes, meaning a friendly, responsible society.

Fabulous, almost otherworldly landscapes and natural phenomena like the northern lights mean that long winters are more than made up for by endless summer days in volcanic hot springs.

Hop on your bicycle and pop to a local café for waffles and jam, stopping to have a conversation with a neighbor or to pick up groceries. Safe, friendly, and socially conscious are the buzzwords again.

Where Denmark has hygge , Sweden has lagom —  a word (also used in Norwegian) that means “just the right amount”. This “Goldilocks zone” is important to Swedes — not too little of anything, but not so much that things lose their luster and charm, so they bring a smile to your face when encountered.

Being near water is something Norway offers by the fjord-load, so get out to the mountains and lakes to sail, swim, cycle, and get lungfuls of that crisp, clean air.

Switzerland

Believers in a very direct democracy in which everything is voted on by the people, from the number of vacation days nationally to minor, local issues, the Swiss social system is bound by the belief that every voice is important. That — and the chocolate — makes it a very happy place.

High salaries is one of the stereotypes about Luxembourg — and it’s true — but it’s not greed. One of the strongest social security systems in the world means superb healthcare and some of the best work-life balance of any culture (including a mandatory five weeks of vacation a year).

New Zealand

A country that introduces a well-being budget of billions to help citizens’ mental health, end child poverty, and support the Māori and Pasifika populations is a country looking forward. The famously friendly Kiwis also happen to live on some of the most stunning islands on the planet.

Why does travel make you happy?

You might think that’s a silly question. It’s seeing new places, right? Sure, very fun, but there’s a bit more to it.

Even the act of planning a trip can get your happiness levels up. A study by the Institute for Applied Positive Research found that 97% of respondents reported that having a trip planned made them happier. The process provides a distraction from your daily routine, the possibilities are exciting, and the anticipation and delayed gratification of a trip — something solid to look forward to — relaxes us and cheers us up in both the short- and medium-term.

Self-confidence

Getting out of your comfort zone and into a new culture, a new language and a new way of doing things means that seemingly simple things — buying a travel card, ordering food, even crossing the street — are done slightly differently. Completed a task? Hey, be proud of yourself!

Social interaction

When traveling, you meet people. That goes without saying, but these are people you might not normally meet. They’re not colleagues or your regular friends; they’re people with stories, motivations, and ideas you might not have encountered before. The one thing you all have is a love of adventure and, for a short time, that’s enough to create a bond.

Living in the moment

Get off your phone (not right now, finish reading this first!) and live in the moment. When you’re traveling, you see things for the first time, and possibly the only time. You spend less time doom-scrolling and give yourself over to the here and now.

Learning new things

Maybe it’s a huge thing, like a new language. Maybe it’s something smaller, like how the ticket machine works on an unfamiliar tram. Travel means you’re always learning, whether consciously or not, and rewards you with that little buzz of endorphins when you’ve accomplished something good.

You can do whatever you want when you’re traveling. Sit in a cafe with a book? Do it. Hire a bike and ride for hours? Do it. Immerse yourself in museums and galleries? Do it. Go out clubbing and return in the daylight? Do it. This is your trip, so whatever it is, do it.

The most important thing you’ll bring back from your trip is your memories. Not just what you saw, but how it changed you emotionally. That particular smell that for the rest of your life will return you to that spice market; that feeling of queasy excitement when you looked from that cliff edge; that moment of wonder when you turned a corner to be faced with something you’d only seen in pictures.

These are the things that make people happy when they travel. Returning to that emotional state will forever be you coming back to a happy place… and that happy place will be the trigger for you to book your next adventure !

Main tourist attractions

In the heart of the city stands the Winter Palace one of the must-sees for your St. Petersburg itinerary. Its front faces Palace Square with its looming Alexander Column, a monolith of Finnish red granite erected to celebrate the victory of Tsar Alexander I over Napoleon Bonaparte. To the rear of the palace, itself a monument to "the might and power of Imperial Russia", is the Palace Embankment on the Neva. Just across the river stands the Peter and Paul Fortress , with its crenelated walls designed to hold the guns that would defend the city from water attacks. A relatively small portion of the Winter Palace houses the world-famous Hermitage Museum , that obtains the biggest collection of Russian art in the world - more than 3 million items. The Hermitage originated as the private art collection of Catherine the Great, with hundreds of paintings now displayed in the Palace's halls. Indeed, many of these halls are works of art themselves.

Another famous sight, not far from the Winter Palace, is St. Isaac's Cathedral . The largest Orthodox cathedral in the world, it was built in a severe classic Roman style (strongly favored by Tsar Alexander I) over the span of 40 years. When it was completed in 1848, the main dome rivaled that of the Pantheon of Paris and St. Paul’s Cathedral in London, and as with these other great domed structures, it served as the inspiration for today’s dome on the U.S. Capitol Building in Washington, D.C. (completed in 1866). The cathedral’s cupolas are decorated with 100 kilograms of pure gold.

A few blocks from the Palace Square, along the Griboedov Canal, stands what appears to be something of an answer to Moscow's Cathedral of St. Basil's, the Church of the Savior on Spilt Blood . Its name came from the murder of Tsar Alexander II by terrorists. Despite his efforts to reform and liberalize Russia, Alexander was attacked by three anarchists carrying bombs, the second of which succeeded in killing him. The church was erected by his son, Tsar Alexander III, on the assassination site, just a short walk from the bustling thoroughfare of Nevsky Prospect.

The city center contains a number of beautiful sights, but the outskirts contain just as many wonders, the most visited being  Tsarskoe Selo . After evicting the Swedes from the area, Tsar Peter the Great gave over to his loyal friend Alexander Menshikov the old manor of Sarishoff. Menshikov constructed there a great palace, which he, in turn, gave over to Peter's wife, Catherine I, whose rise from childhood as an orphaned Polish peasant to Empress of Russia is said to have been a story as great as that of the rise of her husband. The resulting ornate Catherine Palace and beautiful Catherine Park, located in the Tsar's Village in the suburb of Pushkin, are named for her. This is a truly remarkable piece of Russia's Imperial heritage and the absolute majority of our trips to St. Petersburg take you there.

There are a number of other beautiful palaces built on the Baltic Sea coast, including Oranienbaum (another of Menshikov's creations) and Peter the Great's most famous imperial residence, Peterhof . The latter was at first to serve merely as a gateway for the Tsar for trips proposed into Europe - the harbor of St. Petersburg was yet to be developed, and ships were obliged to anchor off Kotlin Island, today's Kronstadt, located within sight of the landing area. Later, he created a summer palace at this location that he called "Monplaisir", or "My Pleasure". This palace was later decorated with gardens and fountains, the greatest of which was the Grand Cascade. By the time it was finished by Catherine the Great, it had been transformed into what is generally regarded today as "the Russian Versailles".
