Yamunotri Yatra Trekking Tips and Guide

Yamunotri Dham , dedicated to Maa Yamuna, is one of the most significant temple among all the Chardham Yatra portals in Uttarakhand since this is the temple where the holy pilgrimage of Hindus commence. This is also one of the most remotely placed temples in Uttarakhand which is located on one of the jagged flanks of the Bandarpoonch Parvat with the Holy river of Yamuna flowing gracefully through it. Trekking to Yamunotri is a relatively difficult task which requires you to cover a steep and undulating journey of 6 to 7 kms. Of course there are alternate options like ponies and dolis available but trekking and walking your way to the temple feels the most rewarding.

Getting to Yamunotri

You have the option of choosing to travel via a GMOU bus service of Uttarakhand roadways or hire a cab/taxi from Rishikesh or Haridwar. You can also hire a private taxi from Delhi / Dehradun / Nainital or any other nearby hill destination.

The nearest railway station that caters to a fair number of trains from different parts of the country is situated in Rishikesh. From outside the station in Rishikesh you can either choose to rent a cab or a taxi heading to Yamunotri.

By Helicopter

Yamunotri can be visited via a helicopter journey which will require you to travel from the Sahastradhara helipad in Dehradun to Kharsali helipad close to Yamunotri which is located in close proximity to the temple. Once people get off at the helipad they have the option of going to the temple via a pony, doli or a palki ride.

Yamunotri Trekking Route Detail

The entire trekking route is cemented along with a railing on one side which ensures safety. You will know that you have reached the middle point of the trek once you reach a steel bridge that runs over one of the several tributaries of Yamunotri river. 300 metres further from this point you will be standing at a bifurcation point on the trail and a path leading leftwards is a different and an alternative trekking path to Yamunotri which meets finally the main trail after the final switchback. There are three switchback options available for the people going on an alternative route first one is right after the steel bridge; the next one is just before the Bhairav temple and the final switchback is the steepest one which occurs right before the Yamunotri temple .

What to Expect While Trekking

On reaching Jankichatti which is the last road head for Yamunotri your trekking expedition to the main temple of Yamunotri commences. This will be a journey of 6 kms and will take you through some of the most picturesque and scenic views of the valleys below. The route is rough and goes through regular intervals of steepness, plains and descents. You will encounter a number of people making the journey on various alternate transport methods like palkis, dolis and mules the services which they had availed from Janki chatti. While going towards the temple on the right hand side you will be kept company with the tall green covered mountain peaks and the Yamuna river flowing below. People underestimate the beauty of this place and are just focussed at reaching their destination. Some parts of the trekking route also have broad stairs which makes it easier for the pilgrims to walk. You will also be viewing some fabulous waterfalls falling from a great height and also the towering snow clad mountain peaks which will be a sight to behold.

Amenities Available

There are several food facilities available on the trekking route to Yamunotri which springs to life especially during the peak seasons whereas during the off seasons the entire trekking route is either covered in snow or deemed inhospitable for trekking purposes. There are also various make shift tea stalls available offering maggi to eat. There are also some dhabas and small eating joints available to beat your hunger pangs that may arise due to walking.

Resting spots are also made to allow the pilgrims to rest for a bit before getting back to the journey. En route there are also some benches available along with shades to allow you to relax for a while in case you get tired while walking. There are also several water points available where you can refill your bottles.

The phone connectivity in during Yamunotri trek is primarily for BSNL and the reception is scattered and is strong only in some places. If you want continuous phone connectivity then you should carry a local phone with a BSNL sim card or you can inform your near and dear ones just before commencing the trekking journey.
Make sure that you are trekking in comfortable trekking gear like walking sticks, comfortable walking shoes and even a hat which will protect you from the scorching sun. According to Hindu tradition, Yamuna is the twin sister of Yama, the God of Death, the daughter of Surya, Sun God and one of the eight consorts of Krishna.

The Yamuna is said to be the Goddess of Perseverance and Hindus believe that a holy dip in this river secures a painless death to the devotee. It is of peak importance in the Santana Dharma to embark upon the Chota Char Dham journey at least once in their lives!

Yamuna’s birthplace is Sangya in the Champasar Glacier (4,421 m) located just below the Banderpoonch Mountain. The mountain adjacent to the river source is dedicated to her father, and is called Kalind Parvat, (as Kalind is another name Surya).

In mythological stories, Yamuna is represented to have frivolousness, a trait that she developed due to Yamuna’s mother never making eye contact with her dazzling husband.

Synonymous to the Himalayan weather, the summers are mild and the winters are exceptionally cold. As there are no motorable roads to the destination – it is difficult to reach the spot. To circumvent this, and ensure proper prayers are conducted, the deity is shifted to her winter abode. In terms of temperatures, Summers range from 6 to 20°C and Winters from -7 to 5°C.

Best time to visit

The pilgrimage happens from April to October every year. Although it is wise to check the exact dates, which are announced each year. Yamunotri is the first stop on the Choti Char Dham pilgrimage.

The temple opens every year on Akshaya Tritiya (usually in the last week of April, but it changes yearly based on the Hindu calendar). The temple closes for the year on Diwali following a brief ceremony.

The nearest railhead to Yamunotri are Rishikesh and Dehradun. Dehradun railway station is situated 175kms from Yamunotri and Rishikesh railway station is situated 200kms before Yamunotri on NH58.

Rishikesh and Dehradun are well connected by railway networks with major destinations of India. Trains to Rishikesh are frequent. Taxis and buses are available from all towns in Uttarakhand.

Yamunotri is directly not connected with motorable roads and the trek commences from Hanuman Chatti. Hanuman Chatti is well connected by motorable roads with major destinations of Uttarakhand state.

Buses to Rishikesh are available from ISBT Kashmiri Gate. Buses and Taxis to Hanuman Chatti are easily available from major destinations of Uttarakhand state like Rishikesh, Dehradun, Tehri, Uttarkashi, Barkot etc.

The prime reason for anyone to visit Yamunotri is of course its religious significance and eminence in the Hindu belief.

Yamunotri Temple

Marking the source of the Yamuna river the temple is esteemed. It should be noted that the actual source, a frozen lake of ice and glacier (Champasar Glacier) located on the Kalind Mountain at a height of 4,421 m above sea level, about 1 km further up, is not frequented generally as it is not accessible; hence the shrine has been located on the foot of the hill.

The approach is extremely difficult and pilgrims therefore offer puja at the temple itself. The temple, situated on the left bank of the Yamuna, was constructed by Maharaja Pratap Shah. Devotees prepare rice and potatoes, tied in muslin cloth, to offer at the shrine by dipping them in these hot water springs. Divya Shilla is a rock pillar which is worshipped before entering the divine Yamunotri temple.

Nearby destinations to Yamunotri

Harsil is perched at an elevation of 2623 meters and is known for its proximity to Yamunotri and Gangotri. The village has apple orchards for as long as 70 Kms! That kind of views are not only uncommon, but damn near rare! Surrounded by very famous hill towns, Harsil has been overshadowed by the grandiose of nearby places.

Day-to-Day Itinerary

Day 0 – Reaching Dehradun

Dependent on your choice of travel from the above mentioned route – reach Dehradun.

Day 1 – Dehradun – Jankichatti (180 KMs, 7-hour journey)

The day of journeys, you can travel from Dehradun by many routes. Barkot lies at a distance of 136 KM from Dehradun and from here you may hire a Jeep to Jankichatti. Jankichatti lies at around 45 KMs distance and will take you an hour to reach. Also, in order to save on money, you may even hire shared taxis.

Accommodation is available at Jankichatti where you’ll have your dinner and rest for the day.

Day 2 – Jankichatti – Yamunotri (12 KMs, 6-hour journey)

Trek day to Yamunotri commences! After an early breakfast, you’ll start off your journey towards the temple. Overall the 6 KM trek has many amenities including resting points, benches, water break points as well as tea and snack stalls along the way.

This trek should ideally take you around 3 hours with breaks in between. The views once you reach will provide you with a sense of calm and serenity, not quite matched by anything else! Remember to explore the area before heading back. Prayers at the temple are a lifetime experience that will definitely stay with you.

Day 3 – Jankichatti – Dehradun

You’ll return to Dehradun on the last day. However, you MUST explore Jankichatti today leisurely before returning!

Where to stay when visiting Yamunotri

The GMVN Tourist Rest House, Yamunotri has the most stunning views and are very calming to the soul. Other options are available as well. Krishna Palace and Hotel Devlok are decent budget accommodations with basic amenities – although it is advisable to book your accommodation on time. This is primarily because during the season time a lot of devotees visit the region to pay their respects and prayers!

What to eat

Food is amply available enroute the Dham. There are numerous restaurants and dhabas along the route, serving breakfast, lunch, snacks and dinner! Small shops serving Chai, Coffee etc. are also present in plentiful!

Do remember to be respectful of the environment, place and people when here. It is usually a once-in-a-lifetime journey for most Hindus and the significance of the moment is quite high. Ensure you’re not hurting anyone’s sentiments
Wear appropriate clothing. Even if you’re visiting for travel and exploration purposes, remember that this is a primarily religious site

By Road – Buses ply on a regular basis from Haridwar / Rishikesh / New Delhi / Nainital etc. there are shared jeeps and cabs also available for rent in Haridwar and Rishikesh. You can consult one of the many available travel agents here who can get you this service at a very reasonable rate. The final road head for Yamunotri is Janki Chatti from where the temple is almost 7 km.

By Train – The nearest accessible railway station is located in Rishikesh and from here you can hire the services of a shared jeep, cab or even get on a local bus from GMOU headed for Yamunotri (this is the most cost effective way of getting to the temple).

By Helicopter – If you are running short on time and have a good budget to travel to Yamunotri then you can get your tickets booked for Yamunotri. This may prove be a little expensive but it is the best choice made for senior citizens or physically challenged individuals. The helipad is present in Kharsali from where you will be transferred to the temple in cab and then later on the remaining trekking journey will be completed via a pony or a Palki Ride.

Yamunotri by Trekking Route:

The trekking journey starts from Janki Chatti which is where your cab or the shared jeep will drop you off. Do not underestimate this 7 km of trek since it is very challenging being located on a very high altitude. A steel bridge marks the centre point of this trek and at a mere distance of further 300 metres you will be facing a bifurcation point, no matter which path you choose you will be leaded to the main trail for the Yatra. During the peak pilgrimage seasons in the months of April to June and from September to November the entire trekking route remains jam packed with pilgrims walking or on ponies. One must not underestimate the Yamunotri trekking route since being located on such a treacherous location takes you through some of the most testing routes on the Garhwal hills. One must avoid taking the trekking route during the monsoon season as the route tends to get extremely slippery and dangerous.

How to Prepare for the Trek:

Remember to register yourself as a pilgrim prior to going on this trek. You will be carrying this Yatra registration card which is extremely important to keep you safe during this pilgrimage which also keeps a track on your movement.
The Yatra pass can be availed from one of the several booking counters available in places like Haridwar, Rishikesh, Dehradun etc.
The Darshan timing in Yamunotri is from 6:30 am to 7:30 pm so you can start your trekking journey early in the morning. As per experience a normal person takes around 3 to 4 hours maximum to cover if you are in good shape.
Remember to start working out or doing regular breathing exercises like Pranayama prior to going for the sacred high altitude journey. This will be a very good way of preparing for the trek since it will be helpful in dealing with high altitude situations.
Pack up a lot of snacks like protein bars, chocolate etc, for instant boost of energy during the trek. You can also carry a good amount of dry fruits for this purpose.
Remember to wear comfortable clothing like Salwar Suits or track suits along with a pair of sports or walking shoes for extra comfort since walking in slippers and sandals will be very uncomfortable and will cause a lot of discomfort while walking.

This is the first of the Chardhams in the Chota Chardham circuit and is an abode of Goddess Yamuna. One of the holy rivers of the country, River Yamuna has originated from this very point. The temple enshrines a beautiful black marble idol of the goddess highly revered among the pilgrimage circuit. If you have plans to embark on Yamunotri Yatra, then you must know that after driving for a certain distance, you need to trek to the shrine. Janki chatty is the base camp for the Kedarnath Yatra trek. The previous stop is Hanuman chatty. One can travel from Hanuman chatty to Janki chatty by means of shared cab. From Janki chatty, you have to trek 6.5kms to reach Yamunotri shrine and the route runs via Phool Chatti. Trekking the trails to Yamunotri shrine isn’t easy. The route is rugged and weather is unpredictable. Taking into consideration, the Yamunotri weather guide prior to travel is of utmost necessity. During the Yatra season, the trails bustle with thousands of devout pilgrims who embark on a pilgrimage to Yamunotri.

The trekking trail that runs from Janki chatty to Yamunotri is more than 2meters in width and is very clearly marked. The trekking trail passes through dense forest belts, cuts across many rivulets and is accompanied by a panorama of magnificent mountains.

The facilities available on the trail include benches for sitting, drinking water points, tiny sheds at every 500 meters interval. During the winter months; i.e. the Yatra off season, the entire trail is covered with many layers of snow and everything goes under the snow.

The trail runs along the right of the flowing Yamuna River and is a mountainside hugging trail made out of concrete. 1km after the trail has started; you’ll find a GMVN rest house that falls to one’s left side. After 1 & ½ km, all signs of town disappears and what you have is just a trail before you, steep enough. The route to Yamunotri shrine consists in 3 temples. The first one is Ram temple that stands at the point where the town comes to an end. The temple falls to one’s right hand side. As you reach midway of the trail, your eyes will meet a steel bridge that runs over one of the tributaries of River Yamuna. 300meters ahead of the steel bridge, the route bifurcates into two directions. The path that falls to one’s left hand side is an alternate trek route that joins main route post final switchback. The main trekking route comes with 3 major switchbacks. The first of the switchbacks comes just after the steel bridge, the second just before the Bhairav temple and the third one, the steepest of all, just before the Yamunotri shrine.

Delhi – haridwar - rishikesh, other benfits (on arrival).

Stay Included

In the morning transfer to Delhi railway station and take an AC train for Haridwar at 06:50 hrs. After arriving in Haridwar meet our guide and transfer to Rishikesh, check into your hotel. Evening time is free for leisure activities. Overnight stay at the hotel.

Rishikesh - Uttarkashi (1550 meters)

After breakfast, en route on a 5 to 6-hour drive to Uttarkashi. On arrival in Uttarkashi, you will be transferred to a hotel. Overnight stay in Uttarkashi hotel.

Uttarkashi – Sangamchatti - Bevra (2400 meters, 4/5 hours)

Post breakfast, start trekking towards Bevra, along the water streams of Assiganga, till Sangamchatti. Further, climb hill for 7 km by passing through the deciduous forests to reach Agoda Village. Bevra is just 1.5 kms from Agoda. Overnight camp Bevra.

Bevra – Manjhi - Dodital (3310 meters, 6/7 hrs)

Enjoy an early morning breakfast and start trekking towards Dodital, a high altitude lake. Magnificent view of snow capped peaks will accompany you throughout the journey.

Dodital – Darwa top – Sema (14 Kms Trek, 8 hours)

After breakfast we will trek 5 kms up to reach Darwa top, Enjoy the scenic beauty of the Bandarpunch (Monkey Tail) Mountain and Gangotri Region, after spending some time here we will walk gradually 9 kms till reach towards Sema Meadows. Dinner and Overnight stay at Camps.

Sema – Hanuman Chatti (9 kms trek)

In the morning after breakfast we will start our trek towards Hanuman Chatti through dense forest and local villages. In the late afternoon check into the guest house. Overnight at guest house.

Hanuman Chatti – Yamunotri – Barkot (10 Kms Trek both side, 55 kms drive)

Morning after breakfast check out from the guest house and drive towards Janki Chatti, On arrival at Janki Chatti, we will start our 5 kms trek towards Yamunotri, On arrival at Yamunotri do worship at Temple and back trek towards Janki Chatti and drive towards Barkot. On arrival at Barkot check into the hotel. Overnight at hotel.

Barkot – Haridwar - Delhi

Wake up early morning and transfer to Haridwar, from here catch AC train for Delhi at 06:10 hrs. Arrival at Delhi by 11:45 hrs.

Yamunotri Temple is a sacred Hindu pilgrimage site located in the Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand, India. It is one of the Char Dham destinations, which are considered the most important pilgrimage sites in Hinduism. Yamunotri is dedicated to the goddess Yamuna, who is believed to be the daughter of the Sun god, Surya, and the sister of Yama, the god of death.

Yamunotri Temple is situated at an elevation of about 3,293 meters (10,804 feet) above sea level. The temple is dedicated to the goddess Yamuna and is said to be more than a thousand years old. It is believed to have been originally built by the sage Asit Muni. The shrine attracts a large number of devotees and tourists, especially during the summer months when the shrine is open.

To reach this place, one has to undertake a trek of around 6 kilometers (3.7 miles) from the town of Hanuman Chatti. The trek follows a scenic route along the banks of the Yamuna River, passing through beautiful forests and mountains. Ponies and palanquins are also available for those who cannot undertake the trek on foot. The temple is generally open from the end of April or early May until the time of Diwali, which usually falls in October or November.

Apart from the religious significance, Yamunotri is also known for its natural beauty. The region is surrounded by snow-capped mountains, lush green valleys, and hot water springs. The Surya Kund and the Divya Shila are two popular attractions near the shrine. The Surya Kund is a natural hot water spring where pilgrims cook rice and potatoes to offer it as prasad (holy food) at the temple. The Divya Shila is a rock pillar near the shrine that is worshipped before entering the main shrine.

Yamunotri Temple History:

Yamunotri Dham Opening Date for 2024

Yamunotri Opening Dates in 2024: Yamunotri temple will be opened on 10 May 2024 . Last year the temple was opened for Pilgrims on 22 April 2023.

Yamunotri Dham is opened on the auspicious occasion of Akshay Tritiya . The opening of the Yamunotri temple is also the beginning of Char Dham Yatra . Gangotri Temple is also opened on the same day.

Yamunotri temple Gates Closing Date 2024: Closing date of Yamunotri temple will be 03 Nov 2024 , on the day of Bhai Dooj. Last year Yamunotri Dham was be closed on 15 Nov 2023 at 11:57 am, after the pooja. The closing dates of the Yamunotri temple is announced on the occasion of Dussehra. Yamunotri Dham is the first temple in the series of char Dham circuit, Hindu pilgrims throughout the world come here for temple darshan and to take the blessing of Yamuna Mata at Yamunotri temple. To reach here, you can book your train to Dehradun which is the nearest railhead to Yamunotri and is the capital of Uttarakhand too.

From Dehradun, you can do further road distance on private vehicle, booked car, sharable jeeps or in other public transport. The route of Yamunotri also has a small trekking distance. Day 1: Dehradun – Jankichatti

Time taken : Around 6-7hrs (by vehicle)
Distance : 180km

Although you can travel to Yamunotri by private here we will tell you the option of public transport for the common man. At Mussoorie bus stand, near Dehradun railway station, you can get the buses to Barkot which is the nearest town to Yamunotri and transport is easily available from Dehradun to this city. Barkot lies at a distance of about 136kms from Dehradun. You can hire jeeps for Jankichatti from Barkot. Jankichatti is around 45kms from Barkot and it takes around 1.5hrs to reach Janakchatti or use sharable jeeps to reach Jankichatti.

You will have your dinner and rest at Jankichatti today and begin the trek for Yamunotri early in the morning. An accommodation facility is available at Jankichatti for pilgrims.

Day 2: Jankichatti – Yamunotri – Jankichatti

Time taken : 5-6hrs
Distance : 12kms

You’ll have your breakfast and begin the trek towards Yamunotri temple early in the morning. The trek to Yamunotri temple from Jankichatti is a 6kms trek and is facilitated with amenities like water points, benches, and resting spots along the routes. You can have tea in the small tea stalls along the way. It will take around 2-3hrs to reach Yamunotri temple.

However, once you reach Yamunotri temple and take in the mesmerizing scene around you, you’ll feel extremely content and peaceful. At Yamunotri temple, you can attend the puja ceremony, have your lunch, and explore the area. You’ll return back to Jankichatti on the same day and stay there for the night.

Day 3: Jankichatti – Dehradun

Around 6 inch snowfall recorded in Harsil on 02 Mar 2024. There has been snowfall in Harsil along with Char Dham in Uttarakhand and other high altitude. Though the Badrinath temple is closed for winters, the opening date of Badrinath has been announced .

Snowfall was reported on Monday in regions such as Kedarnath Dham, including Madmaheshwar, Tungnath, Chandrashila, etc. Additionally, light snowfall was observed in tourist spots like Chopta, Dugalbitta and in Deoriatal.

The phenomenon extended to Gangotri and Yamunotri Dham, Harshil Valley, and other high-altitude areas of Uttarkashi. Despite the snowfall, road movements remained unaffected at present.

The Yamuna was named so by an angry Surya Dev who felt insulted when Goddess Sanghya couldn’t see him in the eye due to his dazzling light. She flickered while trying her best to open her eyes in front of Surya Dev. Since Goddess Sanghya had tried to open her eyes, Surya Dev blessed the Yamuna that she would be revered as a goddess and remembered eternally. Goddess Yamuna also inherited the frivolous nature through this incident.

According to legends, the great sage Asti Muni lived as a hermit in the Yamunotri region. He bathed at both Ganga and Yamuna rivers throughout his life but as he became old he couldn’t travel to Gangotri. A stream of Ganga emerged opposite to River Yamuna just for his uninterrupted ritual. Yamunotri presents a rare sight of Ganga and Yamuna together.

Kalind Parvat, the mountain peak that lies adjacent to the source of Yamuna River is named after Surya Dev. Surya Dev is also known as Kalind and gushing out of Kalind Parvat, Yamuna is also referred to as Kalindi.

Legend has it that Lord Hanuman after burning Lanka extinguished the fire from his tail in the icy waters of Yamuna at Banderpooch. Hence the peak is called as Bander (monkey) Poocch (tail).

The cost depends on the distance traveled. From Jankichatti to Yamunotri, Dandi will cost Rs 1900, Kandi will cost Rs 840 and Poni Rs 640.

There are plenty of accommodation facilities available at the route to Yamunotri. Budget and deluxe hotels are available at Hanuman Chatti or Janki Chatti from where the trek towards Yamunotri begins. During peak seasons, hotels are packed. Make sure to book your rooms in advance so that you have a hassle-free stay.
Since Yamunotri Temple is located in a high-altitude, it gets extremely cold during winters with snowfall starting from December and lasting till March. The weather remains moderately cold and pleasant during summers. Carry warm winter clothes during winters and don’t forget to carry fleece and jacket during summers.
Trek to Yamunotri Temple isn’t difficult but the route contains some steep slopes. Take careful steps.
Only 2G networks on select phones are available in Jankichatti . 3G network is available at Barkot and only BSNL is available at Yamunotri. You can travel on Palki, Kandi, and mules & ponies till Yamunotri Temple. You have to book your ride at Jankichatti itself. From Jankichatti to Yamunotri, Dandi will cost Rs 1900, Kandi will cost Rs 840 and Poni Rs 640.

The source of River Yamuna, Yamunotri is also one of the four sites of Char Dham pilgrimage. Yamunotri is located at a height of 3293 mts above sea level and located in Uttarkashi district. How to Reach Us

Yamunotri is directly not connected with motorable roads and the trek commences from Hanuman Chatti. Hanuman Chatti is well connected by motorable roads with major destinations of Uttarakhand state. Buses to Rishikesh are available from ISBT Kashmiri Gate. Buses and Taxis to Hanuman Chatti are easily available from major destinations of Uttarakhand state like Rishikesh, Dehradun, Tehri, Uttarkashi, Barkot etc.

Jolly Grant Airport is the nearest Airport to Yamunotri situated at a distance of 210kms. It is well connected to Delhi with daily flights. Hanuman Chatti is directly not connected by motorable roads with Jolly Grant Airport but taxis are available from Jolly Grant Airport to Hanuman Chatti. Helicopter services are also available till Yamunotri from Dehradun.

The nearest railway stations to Yamunotri are Rishikesh and Dehradun. Dehradun railway station is situated 175kms from Yamunotri and Rishikesh railway station is situated 200kms before Yamunotri on NH58. Rishikesh and Dehradun are well connected by railway networks with major destinations of India. Trains to Rishikesh are frequent. Hanuman Chatti is well connected by motorable roads with Rishikesh and Dehradun. Taxis and buses are available from Rishikesh, Tehri Garhwal, Uttarkashi and Barkot and many other destinations to Hanuman Chatti.

Yamunotri is one of the Char Dham and is also the first place to visit in the Char Dham Circuit. Dedicated to Goddess Yamuna, Yamunotri Temple lies in the western Garhwal Himalayas at an elevation of about 3,291mts. Thousands of tourist visit to Yamunotri temple of Goddess Yamuna from April to October. Yamunotri Temple was constructed by Maharaja Pratap Shah of Tehri Garhwal. The second most holy river of India, River Yamuna originates at Yamunotri.

Divya Shilla

Divya Shilla is a rock pillar which is worshipped before entering the divine Yamunotri temple. Divya Shila, also known as ‘slab of divine light’, is a pious stone or pillar located near Yamunotri and Surya Kund. The devotees visiting Yamunotri temple have to worship Divya Shila before entering the temple premises. Worshiping Divya Shala is a part of the puja ritual at Yamunotri temple. Although it’s not mandatory, it is advised to follow the rituals to successfully complete the pooja. Devotees first take bath in Surya Kund, the holy hot water spring. They then tie rice and potatoes in a cloth and dip it in the spring to cook it.

Janki Chatti

Situated at an elevation of 2,650 mts above sea level, Janki Chatti is familiarly known for its hot water springs. Janki Chatti encompasses the last village in the region and it acts as the major hub for the pilgrims traveling to Yamunotri. The thermal springs of Janki Chatti act as an inevitable part of the Yamunotri pilgrimage. Ponies and palanquins are available at Janki Chatti. Janki Chatti is surrounded by mountains on all sides and lies in close proximity to the Indo-China border.

The untouched village of Kharsali is known as ‘Khushimath’ is cradled with love in the Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand. Kharsali is also known as the home of Goddess Yamuna during winters when the Yamunotri Shrine becomes inaccessible due to heavy snowfall. It is perched at an astounding elevation of 2,675 meters above sea level. Kharsali also houses the oldest Shani Dev Temple of India. The idol of Goddess Yamuna is kept at the Shani Dev Temple during the winters.

Saptarshi Kund

Located at an elevation of 4421 mts, Saptrishi Kund is a high-altitude lake and the original source of Yamuna River. The lake is fed by Champasar Glacier set in the upper parts of the mountain range created by Bandarpunch Mountain. Saptrishi Kund is located at a distance of 7 kms from Yamunotri and one has to go through an arduous trek to reach there. This glacial lake is half kilo meter long, surrounded by rocky glaciers and is fed by Champasar glacier.

Overview of yamunotri.

Yamunotri is a sacred place as the origin place of The River Yamuna. One of four sacred pilgrims of Uttarakhand. It is located at the north of Uttarkashi district in Uttarakhand, India. The temple was built by Amar Singh Thapa, Gurkha general in the 18th century. Later the temple was damaged & renovated by Maharani Guleria of Jaipur in the 19th century. The source of Yamuna River lies in the Yamunotri Glacier which is at a height of 6,387 meters (20,955 ft) near the Bandarpunch peaks.

The Yamunotri temple remains close in winter for 06 months as the place is covered with snow. The statue of divine Goddess Yamontri is shifted to Kharsali which is the winter seat of Goddess where regular Pooja & Aarti is offered to Goddess. The Yamunotri temple opens every year on the auspicious day of the Akshaya Tritiya, which generally falls during the last week of April, or the first week of May.

You can reach Haridwar/Rishikesh by both road & railway. Jolly Grant Airport is the nearest airport, well connected with regular flights from Delhi. Once you reach Rishikesh, you can book a direct cab to Janki Chatti. Other than this, you can also catch public transport like a bus or share a jeep early morning.

The Yamunotri Trek is approx 6 km long, starting from the Janki Chatti. The Trek is of easy level, not very steep, and it would take approx 3-4 hours.

The direct bus for Jankichatti is available from Rishikesh. The city is well-linked with other major cities by road & rails. Once you reach Rishikesh, you can catch a direct bus to Janki Chatti, which operates early morning, around 4-5 AM.

Gangotri is 258 km from Yamunotri. From Yamunotri, you have first trek back to Jankichatti then visit Barkot, Uttarkashi, and then Gangotri. Yamunotir - 6km - Jankichatti - 45 km - Barkot - 82Km - Uttarkashi - 100Km - Gangotri

Yamunotri Dham is located above 11000 ft above sea level. In summers, the weather remains pleasant and night could be chilly, so carry light woolens in May-June. In winter, the temperature drops to the freezing point, so it is better to carry heavy woolens & jackets.

Yes, it is safe to travel to Yamunotri Dham. From May-June & Sept-Oct is the perfect & safe time to visit Yamunotri. Avoid Yatra on a rainy & monsoon time because it increases the chances of landslides and road blockage.

September-November is the best time to visit Yamunotri Dham. At this time the weather remains pleasant, you have not to wait for hours in a queue, accommodations are easily available, all these things make the yatra easy and hassle-free.

Currently, the road conditions are not very good because of the ‘All-weather road project’ whereas, the trek routes are in good condition from Janki Chatti to Yamunotri.

In the Yamunotri Dham, no such high-class accommodation is available, but you can take a halt in Janki Chatti, Phool Chatti, Barkot, where some decent deluxe accommodation is available.

Morning 6:00 AM to evening 8:00 you can do the darshan of Goddess Yamuna.

Sapat Rishi Kund is the original source of Yamuna River, feb by Champasar Glacier located in the upper part of Bandarpunch Mountain.

The trek is of moderate level which is approx 7-10 km from the Yamunotri Temple. This trek is perfect for those trekkers who are looking for higher trekking expeditions. On the way of Saptrsihi Kund trek, you can witness a variety of flora in which some plants/flowers have medicinal qualities. But make sure don’t touch them until you have proper knowledge about that, because some plants & flowers are extremely poisonous.

The view after the trek is extremely fascinating, the trail is not very explored, that's why it is unaffected. The Kund (lake) is in the pearl blue in color which is surrounded by several Himalayan Peaks like Bandarpunch, Champasar glacier, etc.

Daywise itinerary for dodital yamunotri trek, ▼day 1 arrival day sangam chatti.

Early morning take the scenic mountainous drive to Sangam Chatti via Uttarkashi. It takes about 8 hours to reach.

Once you reach, you will be greeted with one of our staff. Team introduction happens over a cup of coffee and snacks and with that, we will also share few details on the trek. We will issue the personal equipment to you to be used on the trek and returned at the end.

A hot tasty dinner and then our bed calls us. Tomorrow we will start our trek, and we need good rest today, specially for our spinning head after the long drive.

▼Day 2 Trekking Day Manjhi

After having our breakfast, we pack our lunch and set out for the trek to Manjhi. Today is the starting day of our Dodital trek. We start in good time and it takes about 5 hours for us to reach. The trek passes by the village of Aghora and Bevra before starting to climb to Manjhi, 6 kilometers before reaching Dodital.

Manjhi is a beautiful campsite and the snowy peak of Banderpoonch is visible from here.

▼Day 3 Trekking Day Dodital

The trek from Manjhi to Dodital is a short one. The trail follows the Assi Gorge upstream and takes about 2 hours to reach. The trails is mostly under forest cover.

Once we reach, we are overtaken by the presence of the beautiful lake of Dodital. We trekked more last day to give ourselves enough time in this serene wonderland amidst the forest of conifers and mountains.

▼Day 4 Trekking Day Seema

Today we reach the highest point on our Dodital Yamunotri Trek. We trek to the top of the Darwa pass which takes trekkers to the other side of the valley - The Hanuman Ganga valley.

The climb is steep starting from the Dodital and takes an effort of 3 hours to reach the top. The trail is straight forward, but is steep and is a mixed terrain of small rocks and grasses.

From the top, we get great views of Banderpoonch and also see the Hanuman Ganga valley on the other side. We cross over the pass and descend on the other side to the campsite of Seema.

The Dodital - Yamunotri Trek connects the emerald lake of Dodital to the holy shrine of Yamunotri, one of the 4 revered pilgrimage site for the Hindus, known as Char Dhams, in the Dev Bhoomi of Uttrakhand. Yamunotri is also the source of River Yamuna.

Dodital is a serene lake in the lap of the Himalayas deep in the valley of Asi Ganga. The lake apart from being peaceful, beautiful and picturesque, also holds religious significance for the Hindus. It is considered as the birth place of the Hindu Gord - Lord Ganesha

It just takes couple of trek days to reach Dodital from hub of Uttarkashi and is one of the easier to do treks in the Himalayas. To get onto the Hanuman Ganga valley from the Asi Ganga Valley, one needs to cross the pass known as the Darwa Top. The snow covered peak of Banderpoonch dominate this region. The climb to the Darwa top is an good strenuous one but very much rewarding when compared to the view it has to offer from the top. From the top of Darwa Pass, The Dodital - Yamunotri trek route splits into two major treks. One descends down the Hanuman Ganga valley or traverses the other side of the mountain wall to reach Yamunotri, whereas the other goes straight to the more difficult Bamsharu Khal trek , almost to the base of Banderpoonch summit.

After crossing Dodital, The Dodital - Yamunotri Trek turns into a grade higher and rewarding in return. The route climbs up steep to the Darwa Top and then down to the campsite of Seema, a beautiful looking small flat meadow beside the Hanuman Ganga. Further, it follows the Hanuman Ganga down to Hanuman Chatti where it meets the Yamuna coming down from Yamunotri. From Hanuman Chatti, the route follows the Yamuna river to its source at Yamunotri.

Mythological Belief :

As per the legend, Dodital is the very place in Hindu mythology where the epic act of Lord Ganesha - a very important Hindu God with the body of a human and head of an Elephant, was born. It is believed that Parvati, Ganesha's mother wanted to take bath and had ordered Ganesha, her son to guard the site. Ganesha was the son of Lord Shiva ( The Hindu God of Destruction ) and Parvati, but Lord Shiva was unknown of the fact that Ganesha was his son, as he was born in his absence. When Parvati was taking bath, Lord Shiva returned from his yatra and was obstructed bravely and aggressively by Ganesha. This made Lord Shiva very angry and he cut off Ganesha's head. When Parvati saw this, she broke down and got angry with Lord Shiva, and wanted to destroy the entire creation. She wanted Lord Shiva to undo his act, which had become a very difficult problem to solve. Lord Brahma ( Hindu God Of Creation ) intervened to rescue the crisis and suggested Parvati to reconsider her decision. Parvati had 2 wishes to be fulfilled - Firstly Ganesha be brought back to life and secondly Ganesha to be worshiped before offering puja to any other God. On this, Lord Shiva came out with a solution that any animal's head could be used to bring back life to Ganesha and he advised his soldiers to bring the head of the first animal they sighted, facing North. Soon his helpers started to look out for that animal and they returned with an Elephant's head which was fixed on Ganesha's torso and he came back to life.
