Pittsburgh International Airport

The Pittsburgh International Airport is one of the world's most modern airport terminal complexes. Opened in 1992, the airport sits on 12,900 acres and offers travelers shopping and dining options as well as a number of amenities from complimentary Wi-Fi to a post office.

Airport Code, Location, and Contact Information

The Pittsburgh International Airport (PIT) operates over 500 flights per week with non-stop service to 50 destinations as of January 2021.

  • Pittsburgh International is located 20 miles northwest of downtown Pittsburgh in Findley Township.
  • Phone Number: (412) 472-3525
  • Website: https://www.flypittsburgh.com/
  • Flight Tracker: https://flightaware.com/live/airport/KPIT

Know Before You Go

The Pittsburgh International Airport is actually made up of two separate terminal buildings (the Landside Terminal and the Airside Terminal) connected by two underground tramways. Both passenger buildings at the Pittsburgh Airport feature high speed, automated walkways, escalators, elevators, and people movers.

The People Mover, or subway train, arrives at the Airside Terminal on the lower level. An escalator then leads up two levels to the Airside Core. The retail mall and all four jet concourses are located on this level. A passenger information center is located right in the center of the terminal flanked on each side by video banks that provide up-to-date arrival and departure information.

For travelers with autism or other developmental challenges, the Pittsburgh Airport offers a solution to the stress of air travel with Presley's Place , a sensory-friendly space near Gate 9. Not only does this area feature soundproof spaces and adjustable lighting, but there is also a realistic airplane cabin that can help travelers with special needs acclimate to the flying experience before boarding.

Pittsburgh International Airport Parking

Parking at the Pittsburgh International Airport isn't a hassle. A covered garage offers convenient access to the airport and protection for your car from the elements. Large long-term parking lots offer easy access to the airport via covered moving walkways and free luxury shuttle buses. Almost 10,000 available parking spaces make it easy to find a parking spot and the lots and garage are all paved, fully-illuminated, and offer disabled access.

  • Short-Term Parking Garage: The short-term parking garage is ideal for dropping off and picking up travelers and for stays of under 24 hours. It is especially nice during bad weather and when you are running late for a flight.
  • Long-Term Parking Lot: An alternative to the more expensive parking garage, especially since a covered moving walkway connects it directly with the Landside Terminal.
  • Gold Key Lot Parking: Frequent flyers may want to purchase a monthly lease at the Gold Key Lot. You can make reservations in advance for both long-term and daily parking.

Driving Directions

Whether you arrive at the airport from Downtown Pittsburgh or another direction, getting to the terminal is straightforward. The Pittsburgh Airport is located about 20 miles west of downtown Pittsburgh.

  • From Downtown Pittsburgh: Go through the Fort Pitt Tunnel and follow 279 South to Route 22/30 to Route 60 North (the same road, just changes names). Follow Route 60N approximately six miles to Airport Exit 6.
  • From the North (Wexford, Erie, New York...): Follow airport signs on Southbound I-79 to Exit 59B, Route 60N to Airport. Travel approximately 12 miles to Airport Exit 6.
  • From the East (Monroeville, PA Turnpike, Philadelphia...): Follow 376 West to Fort Pitt Bridge and Tunnel (follow overhead signs to the airport for the correct lanes). Go through the Fort Pitt Tunnel and follow 279 South to Route 22/30 to Route 60 North (the same road, just changes names). Follow Route 60N approximately 6 miles to Airport Exit 6.
  • From the South (Washington, PA; West Virginia; Washington D.C.): Follow Northbound I-79 to Exit 15 (Route 22/30, Route 60 - same road) towards the airport. Bear left to follow Route 60N. Travel for approximately 6 miles to Airport Exit 6.
  • From the West via Rt. 60 (Youngstown, OH; Cleveland, OH): Follow I-76 (Turnpike) to PA60-TollS towards Beaver/Pittsburgh. Follow PA60-TollS approximately 27 miles to Airport Exit 6.
  • From the West via Rt. 22/30 (Weirton, WV; Steubenville, OH): Follow US-22E to US-30W/PA-978S exit towards Imperial/Oakdale. Turn left off of exit ramp onto US-30/Bateman Road/PA-978 and stay straight onto US-30. At light (5-way intersection) turn right (not the hardest right) onto West Allegheny Road. Follow for approximately 1 mile and turn right onto McClaren Road. Continue almost 2 miles to PA-60N ramp towards Airport/Beaver. Merge onto PA 60-N and follow about 2 miles to Airport Exit 6.

Public Transportation and Taxis

It's possible to take a bus from the airport if your destination is in central Pittsburgh , but a taxi or shuttle to your final destination is probably your best bet. Car rental counters are located on the Baggage Claim level of the Landside Terminal and offer rentals from major agencies. From the rental counter, it is just a short walk to pick up your rental car in the lower level of the airport's attached covered garage. This is also where you will return your rental car at the end of your stay.

  • Taxis & Shuttles: Taxis and shuttle services can be found just outside the doors of the Baggage Claim level. Check the signs before you exit, because one side of the building is for ground transportation, and the other side is for people picking up arriving passengers. Taxi companies at the airport include Yellow Cab . The airport also offers several shuttle services. You can arrange for this service at the desks inside the Baggage Claim area. Some area hotels also operate free shuttle service between their hotel and the airport.
  • Public Transportation: For inexpensive transportation to and from the airport, the  28X Airport Flyer  bus runs to central Pittsburgh and Oakland.

Where to Eat and Drink

Throughout the airport, both before and after security, you'll find many shops where you can grab a prepared meal, quick snack, or sit down for a dining experience with table service. Bellfarm Kitchen is a great spot before the security line to grab a last-minute meal, but you could also sit down nearer to your gate at Airside restaurants like Farm Fresh Deli, Martini, Penn Brewery, and others. You'll also find a couple of delis and fast-food chains like Dunkin' Donuts, McDonald's, and Chick-fil-A.

Airport Lounges

The Pittsburgh Airport offers a few lounge options for those who are looking for a quiet place to relax away from the bustle of the airport.

  • For active and retired members of the military, a Military Lounge is available in Concourse C.
  • On the Mezzanine Level, American Airlines loyalty members or anyone flying with a premium ticket can access the Admirals Club. It's also possible to pay an entrance fee.
  • The Club at PIT is another lounge not affiliated with any airline in Concourse C. It can be accessed through lounge membership programs or you can pay at the door.

Wi-Fi and Charging Stations

Throughout the airport, you can connect to the free Wi-Fi without needing to create a username or password. You'll find charging stations on all concourses.

Pittsburgh International Airport Tips and Tidbits

  • The Airside Terminal includes 75 jet gates and consists of a large atrium with four concourse arms stretching out like an X.
  • There is a working post office in Concourse D.
  • There is a pet relief area at the airport in Concourse D, next to the post office.
  • There is a play area for children and a Mother's Nursing Lounge, a simple and quiet room, located in Concourse C.
  • For something different, you can check out the two art exhibits that are permanent features of the airport: Fraley's Robot Repair Shop in Concourse A and the Mister Rogers Exhibit in Concourse C.

Pittsburgh International Airport (PIT) is a major airport located in the Pittsburgh metropolitan area and serves approximately 9 million passengers per year.

PIT was a pioneer for airport design back in the 1990s, launching its then-unique X-shaped concourse, reducing the distance for passengers walking between gates. In later years PIT is still trailblazing, having become the first airport in the world with a microgrid, powering the airport entirely from natural resources.

PIT Terminals

Pittsburgh International Airport map

PIT is located northwest of downtown Pittsburgh and is easily accessed from exit 53 of I-376. Looping roadways direct visitors counterclockwise in front of the terminal and around the short- and long-term parking lots, while commercial traffic runs clockwise in front of the terminal.

Airport facilities are in a linear layout, with long-term parking and the Hyatt Regency Hotel at one end, and the departure concourses at the other.

The main terminal is in the center of the airport, with a people mover connecting ticketed passengers to the 4 remote concourses. PIT’s straightforward layout and nearby facilities, such as parking and ground transportation, make moving around the airport pretty easy.

The public and commercial curbs are on either side of the terminal, with clearly identified areas for passenger pick-up and drop-off. Terminal facilities are split across 3 levels: arrivals, security, and ticketing.

Level 1 — Arrivals

Pittsburgh International Airport Terminal Arrivals

Arrivals is on the lower level with entrances/exits from both the public and commercial curbs. The rental car counters are the center of the facility and the baggage claim carousels are at the north and south ends of the building.

Level 2 — Security Checkpoint

Pittsburgh International Airport Level 2

On this level, passengers can follow the moving walkways from the long-term parking lot to the terminal. After clearing the main security checkpoint on level 2, passengers can then ride the people mover to the remote concourse.

Level 3 — Departures

Pittsburgh International Airport Level 3

The airline ticketing desks are located on level 3, and escalators take passengers down to the security checkpoint once they’ve checked in. Passengers can be dropped off and picked up from either side of the terminal on this level. Additional restrooms are available on level 4.

Central Concourse

Pittsburgh International Airport Central Concourse

When riding the people mover between the terminal and the remote concourse, passengers will depart/arrive from the central concourse area on level 2. International arrivals and Customs and Immigration are also processed on the lower level.

Level 3 has a wide variety of shops and restaurants and there’s an Admirals Club on level 4.

Pittsburgh International Airport Concourse A

Concourse A is northeast of the central concourse area and has 25 gates numbered A1 to A25. Three sets of moving walkways help passengers move around and there are several shops and restaurants at the south end of the concourse.

Pittsburgh International Airport Concourse B

Concourse B has 25 gates numbered B26 to B50 and is located southwest of the central concourse. As it’s one of the longest concourses, there are multiple moving walkways to help passengers to their gate. A good selection of shops and restaurants is available.

Pittsburgh International Airport Concourse C

British Airways and Air Canada operate international flights from 11 gates numbered C51 to C61. A children’s play area is located near gate C56, but with no shops or restaurants, passengers will need to utilize the concessions in the central area.

All passengers can purchase a day pass to visit The Club lounge located at the entrance of the concourse or members of the military and their dependents can visit the USO Lounge near gate C54.

Pittsburgh International Airport Concourse D

Concourse D is northwest of the central concourse area and has 14 gates numbered D76 to D89. There are a couple of moving walkways to aid passengers, a small selection of shops and restaurants, and a pet relief area opposite gate D76.

Airside — After Clearing Security

People Mover

Once passengers have cleared security, they need to ride the underground people mover from the main terminal to the remote airside concourse. Trains depart every few minutes and take less than 2 minutes to make the journey.

The 4 remote concourses meet in a central area and are accessible to all ticketed passengers inside the secure area. The X-shaped concourse is easy to navigate and reduces the distance between gates, with the 2 furthest points being just 0.6 miles apart.

This makes flight connections quick and easy unless you need to collect any checked luggage, in which case, passengers must return to the main terminal baggage claim and re-clear security.

Security and Customs at PIT

There are 2 security checkpoints at PIT: the main checkpoint located on level 2 and the smaller alternate checkpoint on level 3.

PIT has dedicated TSA PreCheck lanes at the main terminal checkpoint, available from 3 a.m. to 8 p.m.

There is also a TSA PreCheck Enrollment Center located on level 3 opposite the Southwest Airlines ticketing desk. Opening hours are Monday to Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and 12 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Once approved, you’ll receive a Known Traveler Number that will enable you to use TSA PreCheck lanes at any U.S. airport.

Global Entry kiosks are located at PIT for expedited clearance of passengers arriving into the U.S. from international flights.

To finalize their application, passengers need to schedule an interview at the enrollment center, located on the ticketing level of the main terminal. Interviews are available Sunday through Thursday from 1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.

PIT supports Mobile Passport Control for expedited U.S. arrival.

On arrival at PIT, submit your passport details and customs declaration to Customs and Border Patrol (CBP) via the app, and present your instant receipt to an agent.

PIT Airport Lounges

There are 3 lounges at PIT, with 2 offering day access and 1 specifically for military and their dependents.

* Hours are subject to change without notice. Lounge access may be restricted at times due to capacity. ** Day Pass for any passenger. Lounges marked as n/a only allow entry for eligible passengers in their premium cabins, frequent flyer programs, or participating credit card programs.

Hot Tip: Want lounge access, but don’t want to pay the entry fee? Check out this article on the best credit cards for lounge access .

Priority Pass members may access The Club Pittsburgh in Concourse C.

Hot Tip: Find out about membership in our dedicated Priority Pass article , as well as the best credit cards for getting Priority Pass access .

PIT has 25 restaurants, cafes, and food outlets, with only 2 options outside the secure area.

Visit the airport’s website to view the options available.

PIT provides free Wi-Fi inside and outside the secure areas.

Charging Stations: Charging stations are available at each gate area.

Hot Tip: Not every airport offers charging stations, so check out this guide on the best portable charging banks so you’re always connected.

If you lose an item in the communal areas, such as in baggage claim, the parking lots, or at the security checkpoint, contact the lost and found office at 412-472-3525. The office is open Sunday through Friday from 6 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. and Saturday from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m.

For items lost at ticketing, the gate area, or on an airplane, contact the relevant airline .

Additional Airport Information

Travelers Aid is not based at PIT; however, passengers can find assistance at the information desks located near the security checkpoint (landside) or in the central concourse area.

Airport ambassadors in blue polo shirts can also be found in international arrivals, in baggage claim, and at the USO Center.

PIT has a children’s play area located in Concourse C near gate C56 with see-saws and other fun attractions. Despite this, PIT doesn’t rank in the most kid-friendly airports in the U.S. based on our study.

A nursing room is located in Concourse C, near gate C56.

Pet relief areas are located:

  • Outside the terminal, adjacent to baggage claim
  • In Concourse D, opposite gate D76

Duty-free shopping is not available at Pittsburgh International Airport.

Smoking is only permitted outside the terminal at the far end curbs.

Flying can be a stressful situation for some people, and PIT Paws allows passengers to interact with certified therapy dogs as a bit of a stress reliever.

An interfaith chapel is located on level 4 of the central concourse.

PIT Airport Parking Information

Pittsburgh International Airport Parking Map

Short- and long-term parking options are available within walking distance of the terminal, with more affordable options located a short distance away.

Short-term Parking

Short-term parking is available in the garage adjacent to the main terminal. Passengers can walk from the terminal to the parking garage in just a few minutes, and will be charged the following rates:

There are 6 EV charging points in the short-term garage.

Long-term Parking

The long-term surface lot is available beyond the short-term parking garage and is connected by a moving walkway from the terminal.

10 EV charging points are available in the long-term surface lot in sections 8A and 8B.

The extended parking lot is located southwest of the terminal and is the only lot with a shuttle service. When parking your vehicle, passengers may request a shuttle bus by pushing the call button at the bus shelters. When returning to PIT, shuttles are available from the commercial curb outside door 6. Daily parking is $12.

Economy parking is a 15-minute walk from the terminal, with passengers required to walk through the long-term parking lot for access. The economy parking lot offers the cheapest parking available, charged at $8 per day.

Hot Tip:  Save time and money by pre-booking your PIT parking online .

Pick-up or Drop-off Parking

PIT does not have a specific cell phone lot as it offers 1-hour of free parking in the long-term lot. Visitors picking up passengers can park and greet their passengers in arrivals or await a phone call before picking them up from the arrivals curb.

Off-site parking lots can often provide favorable rates compared to standard airport parking, with easy booking available on airportparkingreservations.com .

With official airport parking available from $8 per day, it’s actually cheaper, in this case, to book directly with PIT.

Accessible parking spaces are available across all airport parking lots, with daily parking charged at $8, regardless of the chosen parking lot.

Hot Tip: Want more information about flying with a disability or mobility concern? See our guide to flying with a disability to make sure you know your rights and what can be provided by the airport and airlines.

PIT Airport Hotels

Hyatt Regency Pittsburgh International Airport

Mostly 2- to 3-star hotels are available within a 5-mile radius of the airport, with many offering courtesy shuttles. The Hyatt Regency Pittsburgh is a 4-star hotel located on airport property, featuring an on-site restaurant and bar, swimming pool, and fitness center.

The Hyatt Regency Pittsburgh International Airport is located on airport property, just a short walk from the terminal. The hotel offers an on-site restaurant, a swimming pool, and a free airport shuttle, as well as direct access to the airport via moving walkways. This hotel is a real steal for World of Hyatt members that can book this hotel from 6,500 World of Hyatt points per night.

Next door to PIT and offering a free airport shuttle, the Hilton Garden Inn Pittsburgh Airport provides close proximity to not only the airport, but also the Robert Morris University and The Mall at Robinson. Facilities include an indoor swimming pool, business center, on-site restaurant, and fitness center. Hilton Honors  members can book a room from 39,000 points per night.

At the La Quinta Inn by Wyndham Pittsburgh Airport , guests benefit from free breakfast, free Wi-Fi, and free parking, while also having access to pet-friendly rooms and laundry services. Wyndham Rewards members can book a room for 15,000 points per night.

Hot Tip: Looking to have hotel status but don’t meet the stay requirements? There are lots of credit cards that award you complimentary hotel status simply for having the card.

Pittsburgh International Airport ranked second in the 2022 JD Power North America Airport Satisfaction Study for medium-sized airports, but despite this, PIT’s layout is far from perfect. The X-shaped concourse is convenient for domestic-to-domestic connections, or those with carry-on only, but for any passengers required to collect checked luggage or clear customs, the remote concourse is a bit of a journey on the people mover.

The airport is currently in the middle of a terminal modernization program to consolidate facilities and improve the overall passenger experience. A new terminal is being constructed next to the X-shaped concourse that will connect to a multi-modal facility for seamless access to parking and ground transportation. Whether you’re arriving or departing, everything you need will be right there, with work estimated to be completed in 2025.

Staying at the Doubletree downtown and are not planning on renting a vehicle. We have a group of 4 and was wondering if anyone had suggestions for transportation to the Hotel. The hotel website listed taxi's and limo's at the same price of $45 which would seem odd that they'd be the same price. If anyone has a few options of places to search for prices.

I assume there's a area outside of the terminals for taxi's, limo, or other transportation?

' class=

The Super Shuttle roundtrip from/to Airport should run @$24.00/person (if 4 Adults) to the Doubletree Hotel. Check the Super Shuttle website for details.

There is also the 28X Airport Flyer which is a Port Authority busline that runs through Robinson Town Ctr to the Airport. It is much cheaper than other modes of transportation, but that is the only advantage I can think of because it doesn't go right to your hotel, it takes a long time to get into town, doesn't run when you are ready to go (every 20-30 min schedule), and can be pretty uncomfortable with all those other passengers and their luggage. If I haven't scared you off, check the Port Authority of Allegheny County for more information.

Thanks for the help. With 4 people would we better off just flaggin down a taxi or would it be more then $96? Is their an area outside the terminals to flag down a taxi or do you need to call ahead? The bus option doesn't sound appealing especially with a child.

' class=

The hotel website is about right. Taxi is between 40 and 45 depending on traffic. Also the hotel knows local towncar drivers that they can arrange. They cost 45 flat rate. There is also the Port Authority 28X bus that is about 4 per person, but not convenient nor reliable. Super Shuttle isnt a good option because it is $20 per person equals 80.

Actually, it looks like Super Shuttle could take all 4 of you in something called an "ExecuCar Sedan" for $63.00. I have never used this service, so I can't comment on it, but why don't you give them a call? Check their website first to make sure your party matches the criteria as prices seem to vary depending on the age of the child.

' class=

You picked a good Hotel "06champs" and I stayed there in Nov around Thanksgiving( see my review )..

Taxi is about right if you have a child with you & you're right to rule out the 28X,which I use all the time,as getting a seat from PIA is easy but hard work on the way back.

Since getting good help we still have 1 day with no plans and looking for suggestions. Checked out the zoo, but wondering if any must see museums. The child is 11.

Most 11 yr olds enjoy a visit to the Heinz History Museum on 12th & Smallman Sts at the entrance to the Strip District . They have a kid-friendly local history bent, with a super Sports Exhibit and plenty of Pirates memorabilia. The Strip is good fun generally, with a festive atmosphere of street vendors, ethnic grocers, specialty shops, restaurants, arts and crafts, and the indoor Pittsburgh Marketplace where they often have live music on weekends.

The Carnegie Science Center , on the Northshore, is also a child-pleaser with an amazing Robotics exhibit, classic Model Train, Sports/Body Works, IMAX Theatre, Planetarium Skyshows and a retired military Submarine docked outide. Depending on your visit-dates, you may be able to rent a bike or kayak on the Northshore, under the 6th St ("Clemente") Bridge, and either peddle the 3Rivers Heritage Bike Trail, or row around the Golden Triangle along the actual 3Rivers.

You can ride a bike along the Northshore Trail to Washington's Landing, an historic point on an island in the Allegheny River. Here you'll find a nice inexpensive restaurant, "Redfin Blue," on the patio at the Marina, where you can park your bike and enjoy lunch or dinner riverside watching the boats go by. Behind the 1st Ave Garage (on the Eliza Furnace Trail), Golden Triangle Bike Rental has a year round kiosk, in case you are coming to town before the regular bike season begins. Check their website for details.

"Just Ducky Tours" offers a fun land/river tour of the Downtown Area in an amphibious repurposed military craft. Catch them at their Station Square dock @$20/adult (check their website for schedule). The Monongahela Incline is also accessed from here, and takes you up the side of Mt Washington to Grandview Ave, with its spectacular overlook views. There is a nice locals restaurant up here, the "Shiloh Inn," which is casual and reasonably priced. Plenty of other places to eat at Station Square itself, but mostly chains like "Hard Rock Cafe," and "Houlihan's," shops, another part of the Bike Trail to Southside, and a musical dancing fountain. Have fun in Pittsburgh!

How will flooding in Pittsburgh impact Pirates fans traveling to home opener?

By Shelley Bortz

Updated on: April 5, 2024 / 12:30 PM EDT / CBS Pittsburgh

UPDATE: PennDOT reopened the "Bathtub" section  of the Parkway East around 11:45 a.m. Friday.

The previous story is below.

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) — Major roads in Downtown Pittsburgh are still closed due to flooding, creating a potential traffic mess for the Pittsburgh Pirates' home opener on Friday.

From the North Shore to the South Side and everything in between, the rivers rose and hit levels not seen since 2005 . With the "Bathtub" section of the Parkway East and the 10th Street Bypass closed and the North Shore Riverwalk covered in water, some Pirates fans are worried about getting to PNC Park for the opener.

"A few months ago, we watched yinzers drive up in a blizzard to Buffalo and shovel off their seats to sit in snow," Pirates fan Noah Hiles said. "This is not going to stop Pittsburgh sports fans, especially after the team's hot start."

With PennDOT closing access to the bypass and "bathtub," drivers have been finding alternate ways around town. As of Thursday afternoon, PennDOT said crews are set to begin pumping and cleaning the "bathtub" once river levels cooperate.

Officials said it is too early to tell if the roadway will open in time for Friday's game.

"People will find a way to get around though because who doesn't want to come down to opening day, right?" Pirates fan Mark Westerlu said.

And for those fans who want to ride the Gateway Clipper shuttle from Station Square to PNC Park, KDKA-TV confirmed shuttle service is canceled. Officials said the water level is partway up the tunnel leading down to the clipper's dock.

Factor in the closure of the North Shore Riverwalk, which sees tens of thousands of footprints on opening day, the Gateway Clipper has nowhere to drop off fans.

Pittsburgh Regional Transit is also reminding light rail riders that Wood Street Station will close for rail work immediately after the game.

"A free bus shuttle will transport riders from Gateway Station to Penn Station," PRT posted to social media on Thursday.

Officials said fans should give themselves extra time to get to Friday's game.

Easy Guide: 3 Ways to Get from the Airport to Downtown Chicago

Y ou’re visiting Chicago and the long flight finally lands, and passengers rush to the exit before it gets to the gate. Meanwhile, you are figuring out how to get from the airport to downtown Chicago. Smart move!

Getting from the Chicago airport to downtown has several options, including buses, trains, rideshares, taxis, and shuttle services. However, the most budget-friendly and efficient choice is taking the “L” train.

If you don’t mind the slightly longer travel time, the “L” train is the way to go.

At O’Hare, follow the signs for “CTA Trains” or “Trains to City” in the pedestrian tunnel near elevator center 4, as the train platforms are located underneath the baggage claim area.

At Midway Airport, you’ll need to look for the signs directing you to the train station.CopyRe

Car rentals can be reserved at Midway and O’Hare airport.

To get a rental at O’Hare, you’ll need to go to the arrival level and catch the outdoor trains to the long-term parking lots. The rental companies are located in an entirely different building from the airport.

At Midway, you’ll need to exit the doors near baggage claim and catch a shuttle to the rental companies.

Public Transportation

Getting from the airport to downtown Chicago can sometimes be a challenge, but using public transportation is a convenient and budget-friendly option.

Not to mention, once you arrive downtown, using the Chicago public transportation system is very easy.

When it comes to getting from the airport to downtown Chicago, the most convenient option is to take the ‘L’ train. The city offers multiple options including the CTA Blue Line train, which departs directly from O’Hare International Airport and takes passengers to the Loop (downtown area) in about 45 minutes.

Public transportation not only provides affordable transportation to downtown Chicago, but also allows travelers to experience the city like a local.

O’Hare Airport

The Chicago Transit Authority Blue line train travels between O’Hare Airport and the Chicago Loop.

  • Duration: 45 minutes to 1 hour
  • Cost from Airport: $5.00
  • Cost to Airport: $2.50 (when using the Ventra card)
  • Hours: All times, every day

Midway Airport

The Chicago Transit Authority Orange line train travels between Midway Airport and the Chicago Loop.

  • Duration: 30 to 40 minutes
  • Cost to/from Airport: $2.50
  • Hours: See chart below

How to Purchase CTA Train Fare

There are three ways to purchase your fare.

  • Contactless via Google Pay or Apple Pay

If you don’t plan to use the Chicago “L” during your stay, we recommend the contactless payment method.

Only a Ventra card or 1-day or multi-day pass, which allows unlimited rides within that period, can be obtained through a kiosk or the app.

Know before you buy:

  • The fare from O’Hare is $5 per ticket
  • When you buy from the kiosk, there is an additional .50 chart (total cost is $3). This charge does not apply when using the Ventra app.
  • The kiosk accepts debit cards, all major credit cards, US dollars, and coins.

Does CTA Have Reduced Fares

Yes! When riding the ‘L’ around the city, you can get lower fares for children 7 – 11 years old and for senior citizens who are 65 years or older and those with disabilities.

Free rides are available for military personnel in full uniform, qualifying disabled veterans with a CTA Military Service Pass, and children under 7 with a paid adult fare.

In conclusion, we travel to and from the airport 90% of the time using this mode of transportation as locals to get from the airport to downtown Chicago, or vice versa.

The only exception is during very late night to early morning hours (between 11 PM and 4 AM) when all we want to do is get in a car after the flight. In this instance, we arrange for an airport transfer service .

If you’re wondering about the best way of getting from the airport to downtown Chicago, consider booking a transport for a hassle-free journey.

Hired cars are reliable ways to make sure that you get from your airport terminal to the heart of the Windy City in no time at all. Hired cars are perfect for those who are looking for the most personalized experience possible; you’ll be driven in comfort and style by your own private chauffeur, who will know exactly how to get you to your destination as quickly and efficiently as possible.

Check rates for transport service for any Chicago airport.

How to Request a Hired Car

Unless you’ve made a reservation in advance for a private airport transfer, you’ll need to catch a taxi at the airport. At both O’Hare and Midway airports, taxis can be caught at the baggage claim level outside the terminal. There is normally and attendant and a line when there is high demand.

To make a reservation for a taxi in advance, we recommend American Taxi Chicago (800-244-1177). They charge a flat fee for service to and from the airports. However, there is a surcharge during the very early hours of the morning.

On the other hand, shuttles are great for those who are traveling on a budget, families, or larger groups who want to travel together in comfort.

Shuttles are an easy and affordable way to get into the city without having to worry about driving or navigating public transportation.

No matter what your travel needs may be, there’s no doubt that a hired car or shuttle can make your journey from the airport to downtown Chicago much more enjoyable.

How to Request an Airport Shuttle

You cannot catch a shuttle at the airport without reservations in advance. We recommend reserving one in advance to avoid wait times because scheduling of picks is done ahead of time for efficiency in operations.

Shuttle companies are not widely used by locals because the city train is more economical and will beat the traffic, but here are some options:

  • Windy City Limousine | 847-916-9300
  • M&M Buses | 312-883-9333
  • Super Shuttle Express | 1 800BLUE VAN (258-3826)

Final Thoughts on Getting from the Airport to Downtown Chicago

With this post, there is no need to research transportation methods for getting from the airport to downtown Chicago.

While you may want to use a hired car, it is expensive compared to public transportation and you could get stuck on city traffic.

A shuttle service is the next best option to city trains if you want to avoid figuring out ticketing and carrying your bags to the train station.

In any event, it is important to plan your Chicago itinerary so that it includes figuring out the logistics of getting from the airport to downtown Chicago seamlessly.
