v upset about the sound. could barely recognize what song they were playing.

first band had a clear sound but wasn't the one i was coming for

night beats suffered from the venue's lack of time or skills of the soundguy or whatsoever and couldn't offer them the sound they deserved.

really annoying

This band is just an amazing trio. I still can believe that such amount of energy can come out from just 3 musicians.

I love their dark and groovy riffs.

Great music, and amazing performance.

Student-run radio from loyola university chicago., night beats’ danny lee blackwell on rajan, setlists, and finding spirituality on stage.

the night beats tour

Night Beats is the R&B Inspired Western Psychedelic Rock project from multi-instrumentalist Danny Lee Blackwell. Originally from Texas, Danny has been recording as Night Beats since 2009. Night Beats operates as a semi-solo project for Danny, as he writes and records mostly everything by himself. Night Beats latest album, Rajan , released this summer, and was featured on rotation here at WLUW. The album expertly blends eastern influence with country western motifs for a beautifully unique experience. I had the pleasure of sitting down with Danny before his performance at Sleeping Village here in Chicago last week, here’s what we talked about.

After our chat, Danny was kind enough to sign a copy of his Live In Valentine record for me. He even went backstage to get a sharpie since I forgot mine. I sat for a while in Sleeping Village enjoying the atmosphere and a couple signature drinks they had on tap. The relaxing jazz music playing over the speakers was a perfect compliment to the wood grain aesthetic and warm lighting. Over time, the bar filled out with people eagerly awaiting the show.

Once doors to the venue opened, people began to congregate from the front bar area and into the back where the performance was to be held. When the support act, Moonwalks, went on stage, the doors closed again and people were ready to rock. The three piece DIY psych outfit from Detroit had just played their hometown the night prior, and the energy was still palpable. Drummer Kerrigan Pearce, guitarist Jake Dean, and bassist Kate Gutwald rocked out through their set,

Before Night Beats came out, I made sure to move right up to the front of the stage. Before long, the venue was filled as fans packed in all around me. As I discussed with Danny in our interview, Night Beats is performing their new album Rajan from start to finish for each of their shows. This likely surprised most people, who are probably used to a different structure of setlist. Throughout the show, though, I understood further why Danny said that he thinks more bands should do this. The songs all flowed so perfectly into one another just like they did on the album, and with the instrumental limitations, the band is forced to find unique pockets for improvisation and experimentation within the songs.

the night beats tour

Danny and I spoke about how he learned to use a baglama for the first song on the record, Hot Ghee , but he didn’t bring the instrument on tour with him, so instead, guitar pedals were used to distort Danny’s guitar to bring a similar sound. The song took on a whole new life in a live setting, with explosive guitar solos from Danny unlike what I ever could have expected. The second song, Nightmare , was a total highlight for me. It’s one of my favorite songs on the record, and I loved the twists and turns that the band took with it.

Joined on stage by bassist Kyrone Oak and drummer Christopher Michael Scott, Danny seemed like he was born to perform. His band members’ relaxing demeanor meant that Danny commanded the attention of everyone in the room. His mind bending solos and expressive body language were infectious, and before long the groove had spread like wildfire throughout the audience.

The set closer was the last song on Rajan, Morocco Blues , and was another highlight for me. The song is a lot more uptempo than the previous song, 9 to 5 , which made for a nice change of pace. Danny’s reverberated guitar solos took the song to a whole different stratosphere. After the song ended, the crowd clapped and cheered, as the band members left the stage. Most of us remained locked in place, in awe of what we had just witnessed, and before we could move, the band came back out on stage for an encore. This totally surprised me, as I spoke with Danny about the setlist before the show and he didn’t mention an encore. The band proceeded to rock the house with a couple fan favorites, like Right / Wrong and That’s All You Got .

the night beats tour

To my eye, Night Beats is only getting better with time. Through 14 years in the music industry, Danny and his collaborators are becoming a force to be reckoned with. Night Beats is continuing their US tour through early October, and you can check out their latest record, Rajan, wherever you listen to music. I’d also suggest taking a look at their live session with Levitation.

Live music review: Night Beats and Daiistar gave Austin a modern psychedelic rock treat Saturday

When a band in Austin gets to make a record after playing their material for local audiences for months, sometimes years on end, it’s worthy of multiple rounds of applause. For Austin shoegaze/noise-pop act Daiistar, it’s been a long time coming. To celebrate the release of Daiistar’s new album Good Time , the rising Austin act enlisted the help of Seattle-born, now Texas-based band Night Beats, who are on a new album cycle of their own. The venue for their Austin stop on the circuit was East Side staple Hotel Vegas , a mecca for psychedelic rock and all of its adjacent genres. An open-air patio venue, Hotel Vegas is known for both chaotic and introspective shows, an ideal setting to discover what lies beneath the surface when exploring Austin’s vibrant music scene.

As it drew closer to 9 p.m., the Austin venue started filling up, with fans crowding the stage in anticipation of the Austin shoegaze outfit’s first Austin appearance since the April edition of Austin Psych Fest . When Daiistar took the stage, the group wasted no time to give the audience a good time. “Star Starter,” off the new record, kicked off the night with an upbeat tune that made the audience dive straight into the groove. The onstage lineup also featured Lindsay Mackin of Austin band, Annabelle Chairlegs handling auxiliary percussion duties. Mackin also collaborated with Daiistar for 2022’s edition of Levitation Festival for their opening set that featured local legends The Black Angels and Los Angeles rockers Frankie and the Witch Fingers .

Daiistar at Hotel Vegas

For the entirety of Daiistar’s set, the banter was little, if any—just the Austin shoegazers ripping through song after song with mind-boggling urgency. The crisp baselines from Misti Hamrick and the fuzzy strummed guitars from frontman Alex Capistran shined across every track in the set. The band was extra loud on Saturday night. They needed a noisy presentation to showcase their upstanding musical efforts that had been leading up to Saturday’s record release.

Daiistar Misti Hamrick

Around 10 p.m., the Night Beats trio took the stage. Since appearing at this year’s edition of Austin Psych Fest and front man Danny Rajan Billingsley’s appearance with UFO Club, co-founded with Austin psych rockers,  The Black Angels’ Christian Bland, the front man has been no stranger to Austin audiences in 2023. Night Beats’ set revolved around the psych act’s new record, Rajan , released earlier this year. For this new release, Billingsley has assembled a talented rhythm section to accompany him on this tour, a daunting task to account for all the out-of-this-world psychedelic sounds Night Beats has become known for. Night Beats didn’t wasting any time during their set—unleashing song after song with little BS to be found much like the opening act. An early set highlight came with psychedelic blues number “Blue,” complete with instrumentation that fizzled out into a psych-rock-sprinkled, jazz abyss.

Night Beats Danny

Night Beats didn’t stop there. The band kept marching on through their new album with determination, slicing through cuts like “Thank You” and “Cautionary Tale,” the former had a more chaotic Black Rebel Motorcycle Club-esque attack with searing guitar leads that sounded straight from the garage scene from which Night Beats was born. When Night Beats was finished tearing through the new record, the trio returned for a triple-barrelled encore of band classics. “Right/Wrong,” “That’s All You Got,” and “Puppet on a String” acted as the epic finale of the evening, continuing a pattern of Night Beats ripping through their music with unbridled indie-rock enthusiasm.

Fans were hoping for more from the back catalog, but the statement Night Beats made was a testament to where they are currently. Since Billingsey’s recent relocation to Texas, Austin appearances might become more frequent. The neo-psych heads are here for it, reverb-ready and all. Night Beats isn’t billed for this year’s Levitation music festival, but there are all the possibilities up in the air for Austin Psych Fest next Spring. Either way, we can’t wait for more from Danny Rajan Billingsley and Company. There are always good tunes to be had when the prolific musicians plug in to play.

Night Beats continue their U.S. tour through October before wrapping it up in San Francisco.

Low amateur Neal Shipley finishes dream week at Masters with Tiger Woods pairing on Sunday

Change Text Size

Neal Shipley guaranteed himself a chair in Butler Cabin by Friday night. The 23-year-old Ohio State graduate student was the lone amateur to make the cut, shooting an admirable 76 in brutally difficult second-round conditions.

That meant Sunday night would always be one to remember. With low amateur honors comes an invite to sit with the eventual Masters champion and be honored on national television in Butler Cabin.

“Playing with Tiger, Sunday at the Masters, the whole week, I think I have to win one of these things to kind of top this week,” Shipley said after his final round 73.

Four days at the Masters can transform a golfer’s life. Usually, that distinction is the champion’s alone. Shipley can build a case from this week – progressing from relative anonymity outside of the most informed golf circles to low amateur honors at the Masters and a tee time with arguably the greatest golfer of all time.

A bit of incidental serendipity secured the young amateur the most desirable Sunday pairing in golf. Shipley made a double bogey on the par-4 18th on Saturday to shoot 80 and fall back to 11-over. He was understandably frustrated. He had hoped to do more than make the cut. He wanted to contend into the weekend, just as Sam Bennett did a year ago. Those hopes were dashed. The frustration quickly faded when Shipley’s caddie got the news of Sunday’s pairing.

“That's when the emotions turned around,” Shipley said.

So, on Sunday, Shipley floated around Augusta National without care. He talked with Woods about golf and Woods’ 15-year-old son Charlie . In between, Shipley hit some golf shots, too.

“Just kind of a cool, like, casual round with Tiger, you know, other than you're here at the Masters,” Shipley said.

That’s a big qualifier, though Shipley’s play was enough to believe the assertion. He made four birdies en route to his 1-over round of 73. Shipley was four shots better than Woods, who labored to shoot 77 in his 100th career round at Augusta National. Shipley also got three more hours of sleep than Woods. Woods told Shipley he woke up at 3:45 a.m. for their tee time. Shipley slept like a baby and awoke at 6:45 a.m.

“He's such a normal guy and really cool,” Shipley said of Woods. “He was great to me all day. Couldn't be more appreciative of him just being awesome today, and it was just really cool to be around him and just the attention he gets and the roars. The crowds were phenomenal.”

It’s undoubtedly the biggest spotlight Shipley has played under in his career. The former James Madison golfer transferred to Ohio State as a graduate student in 2022 after earning a quantitative finance degree in just three years. Shipley started 2024 by winning the Southwestern Invitational in California for his first collegiate victory and last summer, he finished second in the Dogwood Invitational, Sunnehanna Amateur and Trans-Mississippi Amateur.

Then, he finished runner-up to Nick Dunlap at the 2023 U.S. Amateur to earn an invitation to the Masters. He will play in the U.S. Open in June as well, and this week’s experience will make him better for it.

“I was just kind of doing my thing and not doing anything special, that was good enough to make the cut and compete out here and beat a lot of players that are on the PGA TOUR,” Shipley said.

That included Woods. If nothing else, Shipley can say he bested the 15-time major winner at Augusta National.

Pretty good.

Dubai Creek's PGA Professional beats rainfall to make first Challenge Tour start

O ne Dubai-based club pro had a last-minute dash to compete at the Abu Dhabi Challenge at Al Ain Equestrian, Shooting & Golf Club after his clubs got stuck in his flood-stricken car.

Tom Ogilvie, who is a PGA Professional at Dubai Creek Golf & Yacht Club, is making his Challenge Tour debut this week after winning the Emirates PGA Play-Offs to secure an invitation into the seventh event on the Road to Mallorca schedule.

But that dream of rubbing shoulders with DP World Tour winners and the game’s rising stars was nearly left in tatters when the UAE saw record rainfall fall on the country earlier this week.

“I tried to get up here yesterday but the rain in Dubai was horrendous,” said Ogilvie.

“I only managed to get my clubs out of my car last night as there was flooding all around it, so it was a proper last-minute job.

“Got up here late last night, then straight onto the tee his morning.”

So, you didn’t manage to play a practice round?

“No, straight into the tournament!” he replied.

Despite not having a chance to play the course prior to the tournament starting, the Scotsman shot a commendable 74 in today’s opening round, where he played alongside Danish duo Søren Brohold Lind and Sebastian Friedchsen.

That three-ball ensured Ogilvie got a front row seat to the talent that emerges from the Challenge Tour, with Friedchsen carding a sublime bogey-free 63, carding seven bogeys in the process.

“It just sounds different when they (Challenge Tour regulars) hit it,” said Ogilvie.

“Around the green and stuff, it’s something I look at and know that’s where I need to improve. The boys I played with today were phenomenal, especially Seb, he made seven under look very easy!”

While there is plenty of work to be done if Ogilvie is to make the weekend on his first Challenge Tour start, he remains determined to enjoy the experience of going head-to-head with the next generation of golf stars.

“I have to go out there and push a bit harder,” he said.

“Try and roll a few more putts at the hole and go for it. Just go an enjoy it.”

Trump goes after the judge and prosecutors in his hush money case in last rally before trial begins

SCHNECKSVILLE, Pa. (AP) — Former President Donald Trump on Saturday lit into New York prosecutors and the criminal hush money case they brought against him during his last rally before what he called a “communist show trial” begins Monday.

“I will be forced to sit fully gagged. I’m not allowed to talk. They want to take away my constitutional right to talk,” said Trump, who has been barred from publicly discussing potential witnesses and jurors but not the judge or prosecutors.

“I’m proud to do it for you,” Trump told a crowd in northeast Pennsylvania. “Have a good time watching.”

Trump spoke as Israel was fighting off a retaliatory drone attack from Iran that threatened to tip into a regional war in the Middle East. After a short mention of the attack, which he claimed wouldn’t have happened if he were president, Trump turned to an extended tirade against his own legal troubles.

What to know about Trump’s hush money trial:

  • Trump will be first ex-president on criminal trial. Here’s what to know about the hush money case.
  • A jury of his peers: A look at how jury selection will work in Donald Trump’s first criminal trial .
  • Donald Trump is facing four criminal indictments, and a civil lawsuit. You can track all of the cases here.

He went after Judge Juan M. Merchan, whom he called “corrupt,” and District Attorney Alvin Bragg, declaring himself a victim of Democrats bent on blocking his return to the White House.

Trump is navigating four separate criminal prosecutions while running to avenge his loss to President Joe Biden, creating an unprecedented swirl of legal and political chaos.

Jury selection starts Monday in New York in his trial where he is charged with seeking during his 2016 campaign to bury stories about extramarital affairs by arranging hush money payments.

It will be the first criminal trial ever of a former U.S. president. And it will limit Trump’s availability on the campaign trail, though he is expected to speak to the media after court often and has for months fundraised and campaigned on the felony charges he faces.

Trump spoke at the Schnecksville Fire Hall in Lehigh County, where a long line formed outward three hours before Trump’s planned appearance. It was Trump’s third visit this year to the vital swing state , one that could decide who wins this year’s presidential race. He also plans to attend a fundraiser in nearby Bucks County before the event.

Pennsylvania is a critical battleground in the rematch between Trump and Biden, with both candidates expected to visit the state frequently through November. Trump flipped the state to the Republican column in 2016 but lost it four years after to Biden, who was born in the northeast city of Scranton and has long talked about his roots in the city. Biden plans to deliver a major address Tuesday in Scranton on tax fairness.

Bob Dippel, 69, retired after working as a chief financial officer for several small businesses. He said he didn’t think the upcoming trial “would matter too much” to independent voters because “people are starting to see the mockery being made” of the legal system.

Biden has argued Trump’s lies about losing the 2020 election are dangerous for the country. He has said Trump poses a fundamental threat to democracy and U.S. alliances abroad — rhetoric that Trump has argued applies to Biden.

“We’re going to win in the biggest landslide in history, because we’re the ones who are fighting to save our democracy and Joe Biden is a demented tyrant,” Trump said.

Iran’s attack on Israel, in apparent retaliation for a strike on the Iranian consulate in Damascus that killed 12 people, may once again push foreign policy and the Middle East into the center of the presidential campaign.

It marked the first time Iran has launched a direct military assault on Israel, where officials have vowed to strike Iran directly in response to any attack from Iranian soil.

Prior to Saturday, Trump has recently said Israel needs to “ finish up ” its offensive in Gaza, warning the country is “absolutely losing the PR war ” as deaths mount and images of mass destruction proliferate. Israeli forces are going after Hamas after militants staged an Oct. 7 attack in which they killed an estimated 1,200 people and took 250 hostages.

“Get it over with, and let’s get back to peace and stop killing people. And that’s a very simple statement,” Trump said in an interview with conservative radio host Hugh Hewitt earlier this month. “They have to get it done. Get it over with, and get it over with fast because we have to — you have to get back to normalcy and peace.”

Trump recently said that any Democratic-leaning voters who support Israel should back him instead, as Biden has criticized Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s actions in his war against Hamas. The Republican said Wednesday that “any Jewish person who votes for a Democrat or votes for Biden should have their head examined.”

During his presidency, he moved the American embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem and facilitated the normalization of relations between Israel and several Arab states through a series of agreements known as the Abraham Accords. He pulled out of the Iran nuclear deal negotiated by his predecessor, Barack Obama, a move that Israel welcomed.

The deal lifted sanctions on Iran, which agreed in exchange to limit its nuclear program and allow inspections. Trump said it was too generous to Iran, while supporters of a deal said it was the best option to forestall a nuclear-armed Iran.

FILE - Former President Donald Trump, center, appears in court for his arraignment, Tuesday, April 4, 2023, in New York. Trump’s history-making criminal trial is set to start Monday, April 15, with a group of 12 jurors and six alternates chosen to decide whether Trump is guilty of a crime. The idea is to get people who are willing to put their personal opinions aside and make a decision based on the evidence. (AP Photo/Seth Wenig, Pool)
