Promoting Safety & Mitigating Risk

FOCUS Missions holds safety for our participants as the primary concern for any mission trip we send. We offer trips to locations once they have been initially researched and vetted with people on the ground, as well as checked and monitored for safety from our security consultant.

Other precautions FOCUS Missions takes include consulting government agencies, such as the U.S. State Department, the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP), and the Center for Disease Control regarding traveler health. FOCUS Missions also has a number of resources dedicated to promoting safety and mitigating risk, including training every Mission Director in safety and risk management at our Mission Director Leadership Summit, arranging insurance policies for each trip, and equipping our staff and students with safety guidelines at trip orientation.

FOCUS Missions takes great pride in partnering with local religious orders, apostolates, and organizations in every location we serve. We regularly communicate with our contacts before the mission to plan the trip and assess on-the-ground conditions. We reserve the right to re-route or cancel a trip if there is a confirmed safety concern.

uganda mission trip

Preparation Before the Trip

  • Yellow fever vaccine: Get vaccinated at least 10 days before the trip to allow time for immunity development.
  • Visa: Ensure your passport is valid for up to 6 months after entering Uganda.

Expect cultural shock; it's a personal experience.

Cultural considerations:.

Ugandans have a relaxed approach to time.

Handwashing and communal eating are common.

Always greet before conversation; handshakes are common.

Use the right hand for gestures; avoid direct pointing.

Use the right hand for passing, receiving, or handshaking.

Avoid public displays of affection between genders.

Ask for permission before taking photos of locals.

Dining Etiquette: Ugandans are known for their generosity, and it's important to be mindful of dining customs when visiting their homes. It can be considered impolite and awkward if you're not offered something to eat when you visit someone. When dining, you don't necessarily have to finish all the food on your plate; leaving a bit behind signals that you've had enough. If you do finish your meal, expect to be offered more without the host explicitly asking if you'd like seconds. In Ugandan culture, it's generally considered impolite to inquire whether a guest wants more food or drink.

Sanitation and Toilets:

  • Open defecation is practiced by some.
  • Squat toilets are common, and water is used for cleansing.

Dress comfortably and casually.

Avoid short, tight, or revealing clothing.

Shorts are not commonly worn; knee-covering skirts or dresses are preferred.

Health Considerations:

  • Mandatory yellow fever vaccination.
  • Consider vaccinations for DTP, Hepatitis A, and malaria.
  • COVID-19: Proof of full vaccination is required (except for children under 5).
  • Drink bottled water ONLY
  • Local currency: Shilling; cash is widely used.

We're excited to embark on this mission with you in Uganda. Thank you for joining us in this vital endeavor. If you have any questions or need further information, please don't hesitate to contact us .

Mission Trip Information

Going on mission is an exciting God adventure, but it can come with a lot of questions and concerns about going to an underdeveloped country and the people that you will encounter. Below is information that will probably answer most of your questions about your potential trip. We try to keep our information as up to date as possible. Most of this information can be found in our handbook. The handbook has all forms that need to be turned in prior to the trip, gives an introduction to Hope Ministries Uganda, the country, the Batwa, what to bring. We also have a team leader handbook that helps with organizing your trip.

Mission Teams from Hope Ministries Uganda USA

2017 was a year of great excitement as hope ministries uganda usa brought over their first two mission teams. some of their work is highlighted below., july 2017 discovery mission team.

The first Discovery Mission Team came in July. They had a team of nine from the USA and seven from Kampala. The team ministered to the hearts of the people and lives were transformed because of the work they did. These are just some of the things they did and we praise God for this team and all who partnered with them to make this happen.

  • The Mukungu community was trained on the importance of clean water and taught them how to use Sawyer Water Filters that were donated through Wine to Water
  • Our HDC pastors received first aid training
  • First aid supplies and medicines were also brought
  • Sewing classes were offered to the women and the craft cooperatives were encouraged to use these skills for design and production
  • The team had an opportunity to speak with Members of Parliament and the Minister of Finance
  • A general health clinic was run by the team
  • Updating pictures were taken for the children’s records
  • Shoes that Grow were handed out to all of the children
  • Many recreational games were brought for the children, including jump ropes, soccer balls, parachutes, and much more

November 2017 Discovery Mission Team

In November Hope Ministries Uganda USA brought over a team of 8 from the USA and 7 from Kampala. This team came over to work on our farm project. The team preached, conducted home visits, prayed over the sick and the lost, and loved on all of the children.  Despite the rains and the road conditions, this team worked so hard!

  • Built two barns, rabbit cages, and purchased animals
  • The first barn was built for meat goats and our pastor in Kasovu was trained on how to take care of the goats
  • The second barn was placed at the Rubuguri campus and was built to house 60 chickens, 5 roosters, and many rabbits
  • The team took our younger children from the Rubuguri Campus and gave them there first hot baths. The children were over joyed as they felt so loved.
  • Some of the team also attended a burial of one of our Batwa men. We thank Hope Ministries Uganda USA for helping to make sure this man had a proper burial.
  • Coats and overalls were also purchased and handed out to the children.

How do Mission Trips work?

Short term teams.

For these trips, you gather a team of 10-15 team members from your church, school, or organization and then partner with us to serve in Uganda.

Open Short Term Teams

If you are interested in coming on mission, but do not have a team of your own, you can sign up for one of our open teams.

Size of Teams

Teams of 10-15 are a great size for a team. Teams can split up into two smaller groups if desired to work in different areas. We can possibly go up to 20 in a group, but this would have to be approved beforehand. Our hope is that your group will have similar ages, job skills and activity levels. This will help make the team more productive.

Lengths of Stay

Short Term Teams generally stay anywhere from 10-15 days, which includes travel. 10 is the minimum. Depending on your flight you typically lose about a day coming. You may also need a rest period for jet lag.

Time of Year

Any time of year is a great time of year to take a trip to Uganda. The weather in the Kisoro District during the day is in the mid 70’s and a night it drops down into the mid 40’s. During rainy season it does sometimes drop to the upper 30’s. The temperatures are lower in this part of Uganda because we are located at higher elevations. Airfare varies greatly throughout the year, however. Generally March/April and Sept/Oct are the cheapest times to travel. Winter is the second cheapest, and summer is the most expensive time to travel. Your specific airfare will depend on the airport you fly out of, the carrier you use, and the flight pattern you choose, but generally it will range between $1100 and $2,000. You will fly into Kigali, Rwanda. You will have to apply for an East African Visa which will allow you to cross over the boarder into Uganda. You can book this, or we can book your tickets for you for a truly all inclusive trip cost.

Estimated Cost

Cost will vary based on what type of team you bring. For instance, if its a medical team, the project supplies may be more expensive. Running a full children’s camp will be more expensive than a light construction trip. In general, though, all in-country expenses generally run at $1500 US dollars per person plus project expenses. This is inclusive of all in country expenses. It does NOT include airfare, your East African Visa fee to enter the country ($100) and any pre-trip vaccinations you choose to get. An exact per person cost will be given to you when you complete the preliminary booking form for your trip.

Kinds of Teams

There are many opportunities for ministry here so that regardless of what your gifting is, there is a place you can make an impact. Here’s just a sample:

  • Ministry to Teenagers
  • Ministry to Children
  • Orphan Care
  • Educational
  • Clean Water Projects
  • Church Planting
  • Pastoral Training
  • English as a Second Language
  • Sports Ministry
  • Worship/Music/Preaching
  • VBS (camps for children or teenagers)
  • Light Construction
  • Heavy Construction (professional builders only)
  • Skills Training (such as sewing, crocheting, automechanics, woodworking, etc.)

Short-term Missions trips to Uganda for churches ,Mission trips to Uganda with church groups, Missionary trips to Uganda for churches from the UK, USA, and Europe

Serving and ministering in uganda for church groups, short-term mission trips to uganda.

Missions trips to Uganda for church groups can be a transformative and life-changing experience for churches. Uganda, located in East Africa, is a country known for its rich cultural heritage, breathtaking landscapes, and warm-hearted people. By embarking on a missions trip to Uganda, churches have the opportunity to make a positive impact in the lives of Ugandan communities, while also deepening their own faith and understanding of the global Church.

uganda mission trip

Who goes on short-term Christian missionary trips to Uganda:

One of the key benefits of participating in a missions trip to Uganda is the chance to engage in cross-cultural exchange. Ugandan culture is vibrant and diverse, with over 50 different tribes and numerous traditional customs. Churches can learn from Ugandan Christians’ deep faith and resilience, and gain a fresh perspective on what it means to live out their faith in a challenging context. This exchange of ideas and experiences can strengthen the bonds of friendship and solidarity between churches in Uganda and those abroad.

Uganda mission trips for church youth groups

Another aspect of missions trips to Uganda that churches can benefit from is the opportunity to serve. Uganda faces various social and economic challenges, including poverty, inadequate healthcare, and limited access to education. Churches can contribute to the well-being of Ugandan communities by organizing medical clinics, building schools or houses, and providing clean water sources. Through these acts of service, churches can tangibly demonstrate the love and compassion of Jesus Christ.

In addition to serving the physical needs of the Ugandan people, missions trips also allow churches to share the message of the Gospel. Ugandans have a strong spiritual heritage, with Christianity being the dominant religion in the country. However, there are still communities and individuals who have not yet heard or fully embraced the good news of Jesus. By partnering with local churches and ministries, churches from abroad can engage in evangelistic activities such as conducting Bible studies, hosting worship services, and sharing personal testimonies. These efforts can help bring hope, healing, and salvation to those who are seeking.

uganda mission trip

Msafiri Tours provides opportunities to serve on Uganda church volunteer trips for teams, individuals, couples or families from the USA, UK, Europe, Australia and other parts of the world. These trips can range from 7 days to 2 weeks to four months. Our Christian mission trips in Uganda do go beyond sharing beliefs and inviting others to join your faith. As the name suggests, mission trips have a specific mission. Usually, our mission trips combine spreading faith with a tangible project, like building a house for a poor community, caring for children, running sports outreaches, working in a medical centre and more.

The overarching force that drives these mission projects is faith. That’s why, on a Christian mission trip to Uganda, you’ll participate in numerous faith-based activities. Such activities include:

  • Church services
  • Community prayer meetings
  • Religious discussions
  • Sharing your faith with locals

Our practical mission trips mainly focus on uplifting disadvantaged people and communities in Uganda, These are some of the practical ways:

Furthermore, participating in missions trips to Uganda can have a profound impact on the members of the church who go on the journey. Experiencing firsthand the challenges and joys of cross-cultural ministry can deepen their faith and broaden their worldview. They may come back to their own communities with a renewed passion for serving others and a heightened awareness of the global nature of the Church. This can lead to a greater involvement in local outreach programs and a stronger commitment to living out the teachings of Jesus in their everyday lives.

Construction volunteer work in Uganda

There are lots of tasks you’ll take on when you sign up for a Uganda construction volunteering program, including digging, mixing cement, carrying or helping to lay bricks, landscaping, carpentry, painting, plastering, beautification, and much more. Most Opportunities for construction volunteering in Uganda projects require a level of physical fitness, so these programs are perfect for students and active travellers who’d like to get dirty, do some good, and help Uganda communities in need.

Why serve together on group mission trips in Africa?

Whether it’s cost, timing, logistics, work commitments or something more, there will always be reasons not to go. But ultimately, it comes down to whether or not we think it’s worth the effort.

Will this trip make a difference in the lives of the people we meet in Africa? Will it be meaningful for your group? Why not just serve in our community?

We believe these experiences can be extremely beneficial, both for those who go and the people they come alongside in Uganda. But ultimately, what makes a Uganda mission trip meaningful is taking the time to care about how we approach our short-term mission trips. When we come with humility—serving where needed while seeing the people in front of us as equals and image-bearers of God—it’s hard for it to go wrong.

Step out of your normal life and learn what it means to love and serve others like Jesus. Dignify people in difficult life circumstances and learn how to care for those on the margins everywhere.

WHY GROUP MISSION TRIPS TO UGANDA?

A Uganda mission trip can be a powerful, life-changing experience that broadens your perspective, gives you better direction, teaches you new skills, rejuvenates your body and mind and is a practical way to demonstrate the gospel.

We need several teams to help local Churches reach mission goals which include painting churches, and running medical camps. We also need teachers, spiritual training, outreach, and sports ministry, among many others. You can help share the love of Christ by serving on a short-term trip in Uganda or Kenya with Msafiri Tours. Every year, we host lots of mission trip participants in Uganda from around the world.

All of our short-term mission trips in Uganda or Kenya are connected with Local Church Pastors who share the needs of the community and how you can co-work with the host community to address these needs. You will serve alongside the local Ugandan pastors and ministry as partners and engaged in their local communities. You will assist with both reaching their communities for Christ and completing various project goals set by their Churches.

Affordable mission trips to Uganda with wildlife experiences

Mission trips and wildlife exploration in Uganda; The mission Trips start with the projects you have signed up for and end with a rare experience of visiting an African Safari destination where you can see the big 5 or even a mountain gorilla tracking safari.

Your team’s work will be dedicated to meeting the physical and spiritual needs of underserved communities in Uganda. As we work together with local church pastors and other indigenous leaders in each community, we ask them, “What does your community need to be transformed?” There are a variety of ministry opportunities, such as youth programs, small construction projects, mobile medical clinics, and community evangelism. By partnering with local Ugandan churches and ministries, the difference you make will have a lasting impact long after you return home.

What will my team be doing?

Short-term teams will be working directly with local Ugandan churches that are meeting the physical and spiritual needs of their communities but will have broader opportunities for kingdom impact. While teams will have some opportunities to be part of the feeding programs with churches, teams will also be part of evangelism and outreach in the communities, inviting people to come to participate in church services. Teams will also help the local churches host events as a way of sharing the gospel and teaching the Bible to youth, children, and their families. For a very reasonable price of around £400 per home, your team can also help build a home for a family in need (many teams will choose to help build three homes over the week, but this is optional).

During a trip to Mission Uganda, you’ll get to see and participate in these areas of our ministry: Partner Schools – Visiting some of our partner schools is a highlight for many people. You’ll break a sweat and you’ll get to see what education looks like in Uganda.

Sports Ministry: Use sports such as soccer, basketball, Frisbee, volleyball, or any large-group game as a platform for building relationships and sharing the gospel.

Raising Funds for Short term Uganda mission trips

Volunteering in Uganda is an experience which will be well worth all the money you invest in it. However, with your program fee, airfare and other travel expenses it can soon add up to be quite an expensive undertaking, and possibly one you need help to cover.

Many volunteers face this situation, but the good news is there are lots of ways you can raise money for your venture.

Here are a few fundraising ideas:

Learn Luganda for Missions trips to Uganda for church groups

Learning another language is a rewarding experience in itself, but when you can communicate (however basically) with your host family, or the people who live in your local community, you’ll have a much higher chance of achieving true cultural immersion during your volunteer in Uganda experience.

If possible learn some basic phrases before you arrive, then there you can either enrol in a class or just practice by talking to local people on your Women’s Empowerment Uganda. Learn Luganda

Safety While Volunteering In Uganda

Your safety while travelling in Uganda is paramount. While most areas of Uganda where volunteer projects are located are generally safe, it is important to remember that many of these places’ economic and political situations may not be very stable.

Here are some basics on how to keep safe

Here are tips on how to stay healthy on your tour

Cultural Immersion Opportunities

Uganda has unique aspects to its culture, and as a volunteer, you’ll have the unique opportunity to become fully immersed in it in a way that a regular tourist or traveller never could. Living, working and eating within a community provides every opportunity possible for you to see ‘behind the scenes. Have a look at the cultural etiquette guidelines here which may be useful

Adventure and Excursions

Latin Uganda is an adventurer’s paradise and a sights paradise. Whether you are looking for thrill-seeking adventures and activities, nature and wildlife explorations, jungle expeditions, mountain gorilla trekking, cultural and historical experiences, city discoveries or relaxation activities you will find it in Uganda and we can arrange all that for you… Use this link to see available activities.

Packing Advice – Tips for Packing

Uganda’s geography and climate differ greatly from other African countries. Uganda 2022 – Return to Uganda

In 2019, Medical Missions Foundation celebrated 10 years of mission trips to Uganda. The following two years, because of a global pandemic, we were prevented from reaching those in need of critical medical services. Finally, in 2022, we were able to return to Uganda.

As my first time traveling with our Uganda team, I am completely overwhelmed by the complexity of the logistics involved in putting this, or any of our other missions together. I know much of the hard work put into planning for our missions from the perspective of our Missions Support expert, Sulamita, who collects credentials, passport and visa information, making and changing flight arrangements and so much more, while putting out fires in all planning.

I see the passion from our dedicated Uganda mission directors, Brandon Pomeroy, Mark Shields and Pepper Card. Brandon, so eager to pack his surgical schedule with as many procedures as he can. Mark, making the arrangements for all local transport of people and luggage, while being the ambassador for our team. Pepper, with so much heart, putting thousands of hours into packing supplies, making arrangements with local medical staff and ensuring everything goes as planned in Gulu.

And none of this can be done without the commitment of all the volunteers on this mission. Doctors, nurses and nonmedical people who have donated their time and money to travel 26 and a half hours in flights and airports, then seven hours in non-airconditioned busses, separated from family and friends for ten days, to travel to this wonderful place called Gulu.

uganda mission trip

I have met some of the local angels who take care of the patients everyday of St Mary’s Hospital Locor. One of which, Sister Rose, who welcomed me as if we had always been best friends. And, when we arrived at the hospital, our team was greeted by the nursings staff, with the sweetest song and parade into the hospital.

I am so excited to see what this trip will bring. To see our amazing Uganda team in action, changing the lives of these kind people.

uganda mission trip

While on the ground serving in Uganda you can worship alongside a local church and participate by providing music, sermons, short-exhortations, teaching, testimonies, or help lead Sunday School or VBS. Provide medical services and support to the community and healthcare system as well as nutrition awareness and general counseling on health issues. Lead devotions, tutor students, observe classes, help teachers with arts and crafts, games, storytelling, singing or participate in recess. Use sports or group games for building relationships and sharing the gospel; or work alongside a local builder on various projects from painting, roofing, cement work, tiling, landscaping or whatever projects are needed in the community.

Uganda Kumi

Breaking poverty through education.

  • Project Overview

Country Information

  • Trip Dates and Application

Kumi in Eastern Uganda will give you a taste of the ‘real Africa’. The colours are bright, the welcomes are big, the wildlife is jaw-dropping and the scenery is breath-taking. However, underneath that traditional view, the need is significant. We’ve worked with partners here for many years, supporting the need for additional classrooms and further educational facilities to support the growing class sizes. Education is the key to breaking poverty and we’re working to help children here have access to full-time schooling.

Mission Trip Dates

  • 13 Jul – 27 Jul 2024

The Projects

Partner – kumi primary school.

Our host in Kumi is the PAG (Pentecostal Assemblies of God) Church.

In 2022 Mission Direct moved to work at Kumi Primary School. This is a State Primary School which was founded by Missionaries at St Stephen’s Church in 1926. Some of the original buildings are still in use together with additional classrooms from 1980’s which is when it was handed over to the Municipality. There are over 1,200 children at the school, and this will double over the next ten years.

In 2022 we built homes for four teachers families. This enabled us to renovate an old classroom block which the teachers have been living in. The result has been to halve class sizes (to around 80) for the first four year groups.

Our task at this school is to continue to provide improved facilities. In 2023 we built a new two classroom block. Our project for 2024 is to build another two-classroom block to continue to increase capacity, reduce class sizes and create improved learning environments.

Rest and Relaxation

At the end of your time in country, you will stay at Red Chilli Camp in Murchison Falls National Park for a wonderful safari and some well-deserved downtime.

Beginning of Suubi Children's Center

In 2010 Ronnie and Ritah invited 3 Woodlanders to explore establishing a center in Bukeka and shortly thereafter they built a rugged classroom and began teaching children.

Since that small beginning the Suubi Children’s Center has grown to a large compound with electricity, running water and over 450 children housed in dormitories.

Medical Mission Trips to Uganda

Thank you for your interest in imr’s medical mission trips to uganda this is a very unique opportunity to work with populations that have little to no access to healthcare and make a huge impact on their lives..

In Uganda, 16 women die every day in childbirth. In 2016, there was a doctor to patient ratio of 1 doctor to 24,000 patients. Hygiene in public hospitals is among the worst in Africa. There is no free medical or dental care for the poor, in a country where 20% of the people live below the poverty line and many, especially in the north, live without toilets of any kind. One-third of children under five years old are stunted. Undernutrition is an underlying cause of 60 percent of deaths for children under five and micronutrient deficiencies, including in vitamin A and iron, are highly prevalent in women and children. Uganda’s population is the second youngest in the world, with half the country’s population younger than fifteen years old. The country has grown by more than 10 million people in the past ten years. Four out of five Ugandan youth (21% of the total population) are unemployed–the highest rate in Africa. For all of these reasons and more, Uganda is a country greatly in need of the acute medical and dental care and community health education provided by IMR. Malaria, respiratory infections, and diarrheal disease are among the most common causes of premature death in Uganda. You will play an important role in the treatment and prevention of these common infections.

A 2016 study found that there is only one physician for every 24,000 patients. Needless to say, the work that you and the IMR team will perform in Uganda will make a lasting difference on the lives of your patients.

During clinic, you will help to treat conditions related to common infections, malaria, respiratory conditions, dihedral diseases, HIV/AIDS, and tuberculosis. Since many diseases are treatable, your team will administer vaccinations and provide education on how to remain healthy. Another main focus of this mission is dentistry. Because all community members are encouraged to attend, the demand for dental care will be high.

uganda mission trip

International Medical Relief began sending medical mission trips to Uganda in 2013. Since then, we have deployed nearly 150 IMR volunteers and staff and served more than 12,500 patients. We will continue our efforts to serve Uganda, working alongside local officials to provide medical and educational supplies to reach our goal of delivering sustainable healthcare to the community.

With diligent planning and preparation, IMR is dedicated to ensuring that specific goals are met on our missions, each in correlation to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals 3 and 17.

IMR works to elevate vulnerable populations through shoulder-to-shoulder care with our local partners, creating workforce density, and a cadre of future healthcare and public health leaders in association to UNSDG 3: Good Health & Wellbeing.

In correlation with UNSDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals, our organization works in collaboration and at the request of local hosts where we are under their direct influence and affluence. IMR never goes into a country without a formal invitation where there is a great community need for medical or dental care, and health education.

The Mission

Join IMR as we return to Uganda to provide lifesaving care and extensive health education in small villages around Kampala, Jinja, and beyond. IMR partners with multiple Ugandan organizations in diverse locations to provide healthcare to patients with significant acute medical and dental conditions. Your team will work with some very special patients during your trip! Your team will also participate in an ongoing effort to empower communities to take steps for better preventative care through community health education and in training community members to help others in their communities.

Please join us in this remarkable country! As Winston Churchill wrote in 1907, ‘For magnificence, for variety of form and color, for profusion of brilliant life — bird, insect, reptile, beast — for vast scale — Uganda is truly “the Pearl of Africa.” The Kingdom of Uganda is a fairy tale. The scenery is different, the climate is different and most of all, the people are different from anything elsewhere to be seen in the whole range of Africa….what message I bring back….concentrate on Uganda.” Please join IMR to experience one of Africa’s friendliest, safest, most secure, stable countries, designated as the “best country to visit’ by Lonely Planet. Come see for yourself as you care for the people of this beautiful land.

Lodging & Transportation

Your team will fly into Entebbe and transfer to a nearby hotel where you will spend your first night. From day two onward, you will be accommodated in Jinja in a clean, comfortable but modest hotel. Your team will have the opportunity to explore many small villages while providing care. A village stay for one night may also on the agenda!

If you ever have a chance to go to Africa to take cold showers, coat yourself in 100% deet, sleep in mosquito nets, and work long days in the heat...you should. This is the most amazing thing I've ever experienced. I wish I could put into words what this does to your heart. I thought I was coming here to save these people...instead they're saving me. Trip Highlights

In clinic, you will find that your efforts make a tangible difference as you treat many patients with infectious disease, large wounds, and a great deal of mosquito and water-borne illness. You’ll be able to do house calls for homebound elders, provide acute care for the large Albino community in the surrounding area, and work in a village that will welcome your care with open arms and giant hearts.

After a busy clinic schedule, the team will see some of the world’s most amazing animals “up close” on your one-day safari, which is included in this trip! Uganda is an excellent place to spot the “big five”–the African lion, African elephant, Cape buffalo, African leopard, and rhinoceros! But that’s not all, your team will also have the chance to visit Lake Victoria and the infamous equator line which separates the southern and northern hemispheres.

Food & Water

All food is typically provided during your stay. Please refer to your unique itinerary on our website to review which meals are provided each day. We may hire local people to cook for the team during our visit, or we may eat at restaurants or hotels. Lunch in clinic may include sandwiches made by the team or a feast prepared in your honor by community leaders. We recommend bringing snacks to eat during the day or evening or to supplement your lunch. High protein/high fat/high energy snacks are best. IMR also provides all of the drinking water for the team. Hydration and nutrition are extremely important for the health of the team. You are the best judge of your own health so please pack appropriate snacks and stay well hydrated on the trip.

Extend Your Stay!

You’re journeying halfway across the globe. Have you considered extending your stay to visit some of Uganda’s top spots? (Such as a gorilla trek day trip into the mountain rainforest as you search for the famed gorillas in the mist!) Join International Medical Relief on an exclusive trip extension provided by our partner, Worldwide Navigators !

Worldwide Navigators offers two fantastic opportunities to extend your time in Uganda and view some of Africa’s most majestic animals.  Contact Worldwide Navigators  to book one of these extensions or get more information.

Itinerary is subject to change without notice.

Full Mission (7-8 Days)

You and the team will fly into Entebbe International Airport (EBB). Upon arrival, you will transfer to your hotel where you can check into your rooms and enjoy a welcome dinner at the hotel. On the way, you will stop by Lake Victoria to snap a few photos of the magnificent sights! Upon arrival in Jinja, you will attend the team orientation to prepare you for the upcoming week of clinic. Your team leader will assign roles for clinic, address IMR’s clinic protocols, and discuss the communities you will be serving in Uganda.

Education is as important as medical and dental care for our patients. Each clinic includes basic health education according to the specialties and skills of the IMR volunteers, as well as the needs of the local people. When communities become empowered to take health and wellness issues into their own hands, they become self-sufficient. IMR provides learning opportunities for the local communities through classes and hands-on learning to sustain their well-being beyond our visit.

Breakfast will be provided at the hotel each morning. You’ll help pack the IMR supply bags and depart for clinic! At the clinics in Uganda, there is a great need for acute medical and dental care. Malaria, respiratory infections, and diarrheal disease are among the most common causes of premature death in Uganda. IMR clinics play an important role in the treatment and prevention of these common infections.

You’ll also participate in community health education, addressing preventative measures & sustainability.

After clinics, you’ll head back to the hotel for dinner & free time in the evenings. Your last day in clinic will likely find you exhausted after a week of hard work, but also wondering where the time has gone – and when you can come back.

After days of working in clinic, you’ll depart for a day of safari! Although no sighting is promised, your safari will take you a little closer to spotting Africa’s classic “big five” – the African lion, Cape buffalo, African leopard, African elephant, and rhinoceros! After an adventurous safari day, you and the team will travel back to Entebbe for an overnight stay.

Enjoy one last Ugandan breakfast and bid farewell to the beautiful country of Uganda. Airport transportation is provided for all group flyers.

uganda mission trip

Drive from Kampala to Iganga

A work of the devil, followed by a miracle of God, happened on our drive from the orphanage to Rogers’ church in Iganga.  Our van driver was a young Christian named David, whom we lovingly called King David.  He is the sweetest person you could imagine, and he was an excellent & safe driver, as well.  Despite this, we got pulled over by corrupt police when we were about halfway to Iganga.  They accused him of having an insufficient license to drive the van and arrested him on the side of the road as we were adjacent to the police station.

The whole crew of us were stranded on the side of the road for two hours, all the while praying in authority & agreement for a gracious & swift end to the situation.  We were already late for teaching at Rogers’ church and now we were stuck in the middle of nowhere without a driver.  God was listening to our prayers because all of a sudden we became aware of a commercial driver at the police station who had his vehicle seized by the same corrupt police, although he wasn’t imprisoned.  Since he was without car, he happily drove us to our destination in our driverless van for a nominal charge.

uganda mission trip

The second miracle occurred as we arrived at the church at 5PM vs. 10AM and the people were still there.  Only an act of God would have people to hang around for 7 hours awaiting us to come and teach the Word!

The third miracle in this situation happened as we were wrapping up our teaching session.  We received word that the police repented from their sin and released David without a fine or punishment of any kind.  The fourth miracle was that the police who arrested him drove him two hours to where we were to drop him off.  Only God could orchestrate such a repentance & deliverance!  Jesus came to set the captives free … and He delivered!  Thank You, Jesus!

Isaiah 42:6-7 NKJV I, the LORD, have called You ( Jesus ) in righteousness, And will hold Your hand; I will keep You and give You as a covenant to the people, As a light to the Gentiles, (7) To open blind eyes, To bring out prisoners from the prison , Those who sit in darkness from the prison house.

Back to Jesus Church in Iganga

We had an amazing 3 days of teaching, fellowship, and ministry planning with Kayongo Rogers and his ministry team at Back to Jesus Church in Iganga.  The teaching was focused on 5 core subjects:  Full Salvation, Protection, Healing, Authority, and Provision.  Great faith was present among the ministers and great faith was established in the attendees.  Look at some of the miracles that happened:

Rain :  Immediately when I started the first teaching, a strong rain came upon us and we were in semi-open air church with insufficient protection from the elements.  People started to leave and flee from the rain.  We commanded the rain to stop in the name of Jesus and it fully stopped within 1-2 minutes!  Immediately we had a very attentive audience as they witnessed the power & authority of God firsthand.

Mark 4:39 NKJV Then He arose and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea , “ Peace, be still !” And the wind ceased and there was a great calm .

Demons :  There was a demon possessed girl in attendance who was afflicted with an unclean spirit that caused her to seduce others and even she would take off her clothes in public.  Despite the demon, she wanted to be free and came to the church to be ministered to.  Several of us repeatedly commanded the devils to come out in the name of Jesus.  Within an hour or so, she fell to her knees and started dry heaving as if vomiting out the demons.  Her entire demeanor changed that day, and even more so the next day.  Jesus delivered her from oppression of the devil!

Luke 10:19 NKJV Behold, I give you the authority to trample on serpents and scorpions , and over all the power of the enemy , and nothing shall by any means hurt you.

Hearing :  A young lady came and asked for prayer for a problem with her womb.  As we prayed, she immediately felt healing taking place in her body.  Interestingly, she told us after we prayed that she was deaf in one ear, yet it opened up to hear after we prayed for her womb.  We prayed for one thing and two things were healed.  Thank You, Jesus!

Mark 16:17-18 NKJV And these signs will follow those who believe : In My name they will cast out demons; they will speak with new tongues; (18) they will take up serpents; and if they drink anything deadly, it will by no means hurt them; they will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover .

Vision :  An older gentleman with failing eyes was prayed for.  Immediately his eyes received their vision and his vision steadily improved.  Thank You, once again, Jesus!

Luke 4:18 NKJV THE SPIRIT OF THE LORD IS UPON ME, BECAUSE HE HAS ANOINTED ME TO PREACH THE GOSPEL TO THE POOR; HE HAS SENT ME TO HEAL THE BROKENHEARTED, TO PROCLAIM LIBERTY TO THE CAPTIVES AND RECOVERY OF SIGHT TO THE BLIND , TO SET AT LIBERTY THOSE WHO ARE OPPRESSED

Various Healings:  Many people with various sicknesses, pains in the abdomen, joints, backs, etc., were prayed for.  Nearly all with testable conditions were visibly & instantly healed.  Healings occurred from all the people who were ministering healing – the power of God was not limited to a particular person, but rather all who had faith were seeing profound miracles happen.  Thank You, Jesus, that you still “heal the sick and heal them all.”

Matthew 10:1 NKJV And when He had called His twelve disciples to Him, He gave them power over unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal all kinds of sickness and all kinds of disease .

Finances:   As we wrapped up each day, we requested the people to go home and make a list of issues, whether healing needs, financial needs, or any other.  They were instructed to pray in authority by speaking to the mountains (problems) and commanding them to go, and commanding the answer to come forth.  Many people came and gave their financial testimonies the next day as they had miraculous answers to prayers.  There was tremendous excitement from all the visible works of God through their newly enhanced faith.

Mark 11:22-23 NKJV So Jesus answered and said to them, “ Have faith in God . (23) For assuredly, I say to you, whoever says to this mountain , ‘ Be removed and be cast into the sea,’ and does not doubt in his heart , but believes that those things he says will be done, he will have whatever he says .”

In addition to all of these miracles (and this is only a few of the many), great plans were made for the ministry.  Rogers agreed to launch a Works of Jesus Bible College in his region.  We also strategized about buying 3 acres of land nearby in order to build a permanent church, school, and orphanage house.  Thank God that idea is now coming to pass, as we are in process of buying the land in early January 2024.

Philippians 4:19 NKJV And my God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus .

Saint James School

Our next stop was a brief visit to St James School which is one of Pastor Wakhata’s children’s schools.  A tremendous miracle happened following from this visit.  There was a two-year-old boy who was asleep on his mother’s shoulder.  For two years he did nothing but sleep.  He never sat up on his own, ate by himself, walked, crawled, played, talked, or any other activity that normal two-year-olds do; in other words, the little boy was lame from his mother’s womb.

Over the years he was prayed for many times by friends, family, and pastors.  Nothing ever changed up until this point.  Generally speaking, there is a weakness in faith for healing within the body of Christ, plus a lack of knowledge regarding how to “resist the devil to make him flee.”  Dominion Bible Ministries focuses teaching on healing, faith, authority, Holy Spirit, and power of God.  These are the tools that we need to do the works of Jesus and greater works.  Click this link to learn more about healing.

When we saw the little boy and his mom, we ministered to him by laying hands on him and we prayed with authority commanding the sickness to leave and commanding healing to be done in the name of Jesus.  The next morning, I asked Wakhata to call and check on the baby.  For the first time in two years, he was sitting and eating on his own!  Jesus healed the lame boy and made him whole!  Thank You, Jesus!!

John 14:12 NKJV Most assuredly, I say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do he will do also ; and greater works than these he will do, because I go to My Father.

Matthew 15:30-31 NKJV Then great multitudes came to Him, having with them the lame , blind, mute, maimed, and many others; and they laid them down at Jesus’ feet, and He healed them . (31) So the multitude marveled when they saw the mute speaking, the maimed made whole, the lame walking , and the blind seeing; and they glorified the God of Israel.

Friends Family Revival Church

We continued our trip and drove to the Uganda / Kenya border to a city called Busia.  This is where Bishop Wakhata James has his main church called Friends Family Revival Church.  We did three days of teaching here, as we did at Back to Jesus Church.  The teaching was very well received and great faith arose in the people.

As in the other locations, we spent significant time praying for people and ministering to their needs.  The Holy Spirit continued to work mightily through the believers who were praying.  We saw numerous ladies who were having abdominal pains which “come and go.”  There is a lot of demon activity in the regions we visited, and a common presentation characteristic of demons is that someone will have symptoms that come and go.  Why is that?  The demon likes to afflict someone then goes to another person, then another, and so forth, and after some time repeats the cycle.  This is why someone with epilepsy will briefly have seizures and then there is a gap of time before the next episode – it is because epilepsy is demonic oppression and not a true disease.  Realizng we were dealing with demons, we simply commanded the spirits of infirmity to leave in the name of Jesus … and they left!  There was close to 100% success in all the healing ministering that we did.  Thank You, Jesus, Holy Spirit, and Father God!

Matthew 17:15-18 NKJV “Lord, have mercy on my son, for he is an epileptic and suffers severely; for he often falls into the fire and often into the water.” … (18) And Jesus rebuked the demon , and it came out of him ; and the child was cured from that very hour .

Mark 16:15-17 NKJV And He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature. (16) He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned. (17) And these signs will follow those who believe : In My name they will cast out demons …”

Post Trip Developments

The trip was very fruitful, not only because of the works of God that happened while we were visiting, but His good work continued after we returned home (and still continues).  Having seen the orphanage and some of the needs, we added some privacy curtains to the bedrooms and restrooms, we did a floor resurfacing in the girls’ house, and we added another restroom facility.  We are also in conversation about new sources of income and a school nearby.

Regarding Back to Jesus Church and orphanage in Iganga, Pastor Rogers’ dream is coming true!  Nearly three acres of land have already been purchased and this includes the soccer field we visited and the partial school building structure that was on the property.  The next step will be to build out the school and eventually move the children from the small rented facility over to the new property, plus move the church.

Bishop Wakhata has also been active in moving forward with the teaching by launching a Works of Jesus Bible College in Busia.  This incorporates countless hours of teaching from our ministry which is proven to produce great faith, love for God, and works of Jesus in the people.  This is a tremendous fruit from the mission trip.

Lastly, we have received many reports of the people who heard our teachings while we were visiting, are now putting what they learned into practice, and are seeing tremendous miracles & works of God in their lives.  This is exactly what we hoped for and God is delivering it!

God bless you!

Uganda mission trip kicks off Southern Seminary-Eastern Africa Partnership

Communications Staff — April 30, 2004

Four faculty members from The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary recently took the inaugural mission trip in Southern’s three-year partnership with the Eastern Africa Region of the International Mission Board.

The group traveled to Kampala, Uganda March 31-April 8 where they led conferences for pastors and their wives, conducted door-to-door evangelism, preached in local Baptist churches and spoke to a group of more than 3,000 university students.

The team from Southern, which worked in conjunction with IMB missionaries in Eastern Africa, included Thom Rainer, dean of the Billy Graham School of Missions, Evangelism and Church Growth; Chuck Lawless, senior associate dean of the Graham School; John Ewart, associate vice president for distance education and innovative learning; and Twyla Fagan, director of Great Commission ministries.

“This initial trip demonstrated to me the great receptivity to the Gospel in the world, even in some of the heavily-populated Muslim areas,” Rainer said. “I look forward to continuing this partnership, and particularly to returning to Uganda. There is so much more work that remains to be done.”

One of the most significant parts of the trip was seeing the Ugandan people respond to the Gospel, Lawless said. People in several villages committed their lives to Christ in response to the team’s evangelism, he said. The spouses of Rainer, Lawless and Ewart made the trip and participated in the work.

“My wife and I began sharing the Gospel in a village, and the Ugandans quickly gathered their friends to listen,” Lawless said. “An 85-year-old Muslim invited us into his home and graciously listened to the story of Christ. A man walking through the streets heard the story and chose to follow Christ.

“… The missionaries are now following up and planning to start a Bible study in that village,” he said.

For Fagan, the trip demonstrated the hunger people in Uganda feel for God’s Word.

“The pastors and pastors wives conferences were a wonderful experience,” Fagan said. “It was obvious that there is a great hunger for biblically-based evangelism, spiritual warfare and church growth in the greater evangelical community of Kampala. Church leaders came from many different denominations, and their desire to know how God’s Word impacts the day-to-day processes of their local ministries was significant.”

Rainer, Lawless and Fagan said that working with IMB missionaries was an inspiring reminder of the impact that fully committed Christians can have for the kingdom of God. Missionaries with whom the team worked included —– and —– —–; Frank and Jerry Anne Pevey; and David and Sandy Holt.

“One of the most impressive aspects of this trip was our IMB missionaries who serve in Uganda,” Rainer said. “Their commitment to sound biblical missions among the Ugandans no matter what the cost was an inspiration to me.”

A recent medical emergency illustrated the —–’s commitment to missions, Lawless said.

“Recently, —– and —–’s two-year old daughter became ill on the field and had to be transported back to the States for medical care,” Lawless said. “I asked John if he ever thought about just staying in the States after his daughter recovered. Without a moment’s hesitation, he said, ‘No. In fact my biggest fear was that God would not let me come back to Uganda. I begged God to let me come back.’

“That kind of commitment to missions will change anybody,” Lawless said.

Southern will continue its Eastern Africa partnership this summer by sending three teams of faculty and students to Africa. All three teams will travel May 17-31. One will travel to Kenya, another to Tanzania and the third to Southern Sudan.
