Tour Edge's Hot Launch 523 irons and wedges: What you need to know

/content/dam/images/golfdigest/fullset/2020/08/Tour Edge C523 irons.jpg

What you need to know: Tour Edge’s Hot Launch C523 irons and Hot Launch VIBRCOR SuperSpin wedges are designed for golfers who prefer a more classic cavity-back design. The Hot Launch E523 irons and wedges provide plenty of help for the golfer by focusing on ease of getting the ball up in the air or, in the case of the wedges, out of the sand.

Price/Availability: The Hot Launch C523 irons cost $80 per iron while the E523 irons go for $100 per stick. Both wedges cost $90 each. The clubs will be in stores on Nov. 1.

The deep dive: The seventh version of Tour Edge’s Hot Launch series, the C523 and E523 irons (along with two new wedge offerings), are, simply put, clubs designed to make you play better whether it’s delivering clubs to optimize your skills or ones to help mitigate your flaws.

The 431 stainless-steel C523 cavity-back irons and E523 hollow-body hybrid irons offer help in different ways, yet both boast wide soles that lower the center of gravity for higher launch and enough offset to help slicers with shots that tend to go wayward too much.

While generally a more traditional cavity-back design, the C523’s wide sole smooths heavier hits while the 360-degree undercut in the cavity works with extra mass in the toe to enhance moment of inertia for better performance on off-center strikes.

The C523 incorporates a more compact design, thinner topline and sharper high toe than its predecessor. The changes help remove weight from the top line to help lower the CG, thus fostering a higher launch.

The company also continued down the path of using its VIBRCOR high-grade thermoplastic urethane to enhance feel and promote a pleasing sound. First employed in its 522 line of irons, the TPU is placed in the deep undercut pocket to boost perimeter weighting for forgiveness while bolstering speed and enhancing feel. In the 523, even more of the TPU is used to enhance those attributes.

“The VIBRCOR kind of fills the whole cavity, almost making it look like it could be a hollow iron,” said Matt Neeley, Tour Edge’s vice president of product development. “It kind of covers and hides the undercut. Having that thick pad behind face center really helps us from a sound and feel standpoint. It's a nice sounding and performing iron regardless of the price point.”

/content/dam/images/golfdigest/fullset/2020/08/Tour Edge Hot Laucnh E523 irons.jpg

On the Hot Launch E523 irons, the sole underwent a bit of an overhaul. Although the E522 irons took an aggressive approach to turf interaction by using the company’s “Houdini sole” employed in some of its fairway woods and hybrids to effectively cut through the ground, the protruding heel of the sole was a turn off to some players. As such, Tour Edge pivoted.

“One of the biggest changes is that we pulled the heel and toe of the Houdini sole up,” said Neeley. “Still, we have a lot of weight down there to help get through the turf and get the ball up. We just felt the previous sole might be a bit too extreme for some and by making some adjustments we could make it less noticeable without changing the playing characteristic very much.”

In order to offer more help than the C523, the E523 uses a shallow face height to encourage higher launch while the hollow-body design takes that a step further by placing weight low. The offset design helps counter the slice to some degree, as well. The lofts also are a little weaker than other Tour Edge irons as this player needs more help getting the ball in the air compared to any extra yards that might come from stronger lofts.

The hidden hero, however, is the new back badge. Or more precisely, the removal of it. Now a cap sits over a hollow area filled at the bottom with TPU material (according to Neeley, it is not needed up high) to help dampen the sound, while providing another benefit along with a cleaner look.

“Using the material inside the head made up for not having that super large badge,” said Neeley. “This iron sounds and feels as good as last year’s if not better. The big benefit, however, was that by removing that badge and replacing it with just this little cap, we saved about 8 or 9 grams of weight that we were then able to redistribute low and deep in the head which added about half a degree of launch.”

The shafts also are targeted at helping slower swingers with the super-light UST Mamiya HL-SST graphite shafts that range from 45 to 60 grams depending on the flex a stock offering. The irons also are available in a True Temper’s lightweight XP-85 steel shaft.

/content/dam/images/golfdigest/fullset/2020/08/Tour Edge Hot Launch VIBRCOR wedge.jpg

The Hot Launch irons extend to E523 wedges. Also still featuring a wide, Houdini sole designed to make bunker escape a breeze, the sole has been slightly slimmed with more camber added to make it less of a strict one-trick pony type of club. The deep undercut in the cavity back design frees up the extra mass that's moved low to provide a higher launch while full-face grooves provide plenty of grab on shots around the green. There’s also a revamped Hot Launch SuperSpin VIBRCOR wedge with CNC milled grooves to provide enough grab and a cambered sole designed to prevent digging. A rear weight pad centralizes weight behind the top portion of the face to keep ball speed up on shots hit high on the face while also adding trajectory control through a slightly higher CG.

Description.

Custom is no longer available for this product

The Extreme Game Improvement Hot Launch E523 wedge features a newly designed Houdini sole that makes it super easy to get the ball out of the sand or tough lies and helps eliminate flubs or thins – it’s designed to be the easiest wedge you’ll ever hit!

Houdini Sole – The Houdini Sole is a raised steel mass area at the rear of the clubhead, as well as a curved leading edge under the face. The patented sole design reduces the amount of sole area to reduce drag and turf interaction by 35% and is instrumental in significantly altering the CG placement of the E523 Wedge.

Condensed Wide Sole Design/ Added Camber – The wide sole of this super game improvement wedge has been condensed in the 523 Series while still providing all the benefits of a wide sole design wedge. Extra camber has also been added to the sole of the clubhead. The wide sole and heavier weight of the E523 Wedge provide superior contact through the turf and help eliminate flubs, while the additional camber reduces digging.

Deep Undercut Cavity – This extremely deep undercut cavity dramatically lowers the CG for the ultimate in wedge forgiveness. It redistributes mass for enhanced flight control and to create a higher launch with increased spin for extreme playability from the sand and rough.

Extra Large Face with Rounder Leading Edge – An oversized face design on the E Series wedge provides more striking area for players seeking an extreme game improvement wedge. The E523 wedge design enhances consistency and accuracy. It also raises the Moment of Inertia for enhanced precision around greens and better playability from the sand and rough.

Full Face Maximized Grooves – The full-face coverage grooves of the E523 Wedge are maximized to USGA depth and sharpness. The groove design provides exceptional spin and control across the entire face of the wedge.

Stock Graphite Shaft: UST Mamiya HL-SST Series (49-gram L-Flex (Ladies), 55-gram A-Flex (Senior), 59-gram Regular Flex, 65-gram Stiff Flex, 65-gram X-Flex (Extra Stiff))

The E523 wedge features a houdini sole toe help reduce turf interaction by 35%. This also moves weight low and deep for extreme playability.

Tour Edge Hot Launch C524 Iron Review

I had never struck a Tour Edge golf club before the Hot Launch C524 Irons arrived on my doorstep, so I was keen to see if they could perform as well as some of the best irons on the market for a fraction of the price.

Retailing for just $79.99/£65.00 per iron, the price tag certainly caught my eye as many irons in this category sell for far more than double that price. On first inspection out of the box, there were no signs of why that may be from an aesthetic point of view. Each iron was beautifully finished and looked great when I put them down in the playing position. A generous blade length and ample offset let me know that these were irons designed with playability in mind, but overall the dimensions and proportions were excellent and framed the ball nicely.

From a shelf appeal point of view, it is a case of nearly but not quite for me. I am generally someone who appreciates a minimalist approach to looks when it comes to golf equipment and the C524 irons are just a touch fussy for my tastes from the back. I don’t mind a subtle accent color but the bright blue badge just wasn’t for me, although that is just personal preference and some players may love it. I just feel that leaving that black or grey would have given the iron a slightly more premium look and feel.

In terms of the tech, there is quite a lot going on. At first glance, you could be forgiven for thinking that these were a hollow-body construction iron as there is no visual cavity, however, this is somewhat of an optical illusion. The cavity has simply been filled with Tour Edge’s VIBRCOR, which is a high-grade TPU designed to improve sound and feel.

Additional toe weighting has been added to the set with the intention of stabilizing impact and providing additional ball speed on off-center strikes.

I tested the Tour Edge Hot Launch C524 irons at Saunton Golf Club , using my FullSwing KIT launch monitor and TaylorMade TP5 golf balls, both on the practice ground and out on the course.

Before I get into the launch monitor data, I wanted to give a special mention to the feel attributes of these irons. Impact provided a pleasant lively sensation but there was also a real depth to the strike that isn’t always present in the game-improvement iron category. For me, the Mizuno JPX 923 Hot Metal is still the gold standard in terms of feel in this genre, but quite honestly, when coupled with some excellent turf interaction, the C524 iron is not a million miles behind.

Launch monitor data was pretty strong across the board, with ball speed and distance competitive with just about anything else. With the 7-iron coming in at 29˚ it sits within the higher end of its peers loft-wise but still managed to produce a ball speed of 129.3mph for me with a mid-low launch and spin of 15.5˚ and 5412rpm respectively, which culminated in a healthy carry number of 188 yards.

I did notice a slight right tendency in flight compared to some other game improvement irons which tend to feature more of a draw bias if anything, and I wonder whether that has anything to do with the additional toe weighting. It wasn't too severe, however, just something to note.

The Hot Launch C524 irons come with a stock steel option of the True Temper Elevate MPH95 shaft in R or S flex, and there are more weight and flex options with the Aldila Ascent PL stock graphite option. There are also three sizes of Lamkin grips to choose from.

Overall, I was very pleased with the performance and feel of the Tour Edge Hot Launch C524 irons, and when you factor in the price tag, I think there is some exceptional value for money to be had. In terms of raw performance data, I would feel comfortable putting them up against anything else in the game improvement category and be very confident they would hold their own.

PING Blueprint S Irons

50 Words or Less

The Tour Edge Hot Launch C524 irons are strong game improvement irons with good forgiveness.  The Tour Edge Hot Launch E524 irons take consistency to the extreme, almost daring you to try to get a bad result.

tour edge e523 wedge review

Introduction

Last year, Drew examined the Hot Launch C523 and E523 irons [review HERE ] and found them worthy of Tour Edge’s slogan, “Golf’s Most Solid Investment.”  New for 2024 are the aptly named Hot Launch C524 and E524 irons.  While the name and the look have changed, the mission is the same: delivering high performance clubs at a price that’s about half what you’ll pay from other OEMs.

tour edge e523 wedge review

The “C” in Tour Edge Hot Launch C524  stands for “Competition.”  That means this is the set designed for more skilled players, at least compared to the E524.  At address, this iron set features a very thick, boxy top line and a significant amount of offset.  The blade length is about average, but the overall impression is that this is a big club meant to forgive mishits.

tour edge e523 wedge review

“E” in Tour Edge Hot Launch E524 irons stands for “Extreme Spec,” referring to extreme performance and forgiveness.  This focus on forgiveness is immediately obvious from the Iron-Wood design.  These are very big irons with huge, rounded faces which should fill golfers with confidence.  There is a great deal of offset in these irons, and the back of the club protrudes from behind the thick top lines.

tour edge e523 wedge review

Comparing the 7 irons side-by-side, you can see that the C524 (left) actually has a slightly thicker top line, but it doesn’t have any “extra” behind it.  Both irons have similar offset .  The leading edge of the E524 is more rounded – a subtle difference that, to my eye, helps to make the face look larger.

tour edge e523 wedge review

Sound & Feel

I started my testing with the Tour Edge Hot Launch E524 irons and was shocked by the sound and feel .  Given the hollow body design, I was expecting a loud, hollow sound and a feel that was quick and explosive.  Instead, I got a surprisingly soft, solid feel and a quiet impact sound that’s closer to a “thud” than the “pop” I was expecting.  The sound did get louder as I worked into the long irons, but the feel remained solid.

tour edge e523 wedge review

Having had my expectations rewired by the E524, the Tour Edge Hot Launch C524 irons had a high bar to clear.  Thankfully, they delivered the same traditional impact sensations as their larger brother.  The feel is more solid and soft than quick or explosive, and the sound is quiet throughout the set.

Both sets also share the desire to make you feel good about every swing .  While you can feel the impact location through your hands, the sound of impact doesn’t change dramatically from flush shots to mishits.  Additionally, mishits don’t sting – the character of the feel is very similar across the face.

tour edge e523 wedge review

Performance

I tested these two iron sets in parallel to evaluate their similarities and differences.  I’ll dive into the specifics, but my overall takeaway is that Tour Edge did a great job creating two sets that are highly forgiving while also being clearly differentiated .

tour edge e523 wedge review

Starting with the wedges, I noticed immediately that the Tour Edge Hot Launch E524 irons spin quite a bit.  This was a pleasant surprise as I expected this set to be all about distance.  When I looked at the specs, I saw that the lofts are strong but not near the “cutting edge” of strong lofts.  The E524 irons put more emphasis on consistency rather than raw distance.

tour edge e523 wedge review

Switching to the Tour Edge Hot Launch C524 irons, I saw slightly lower launch and spin , but both were still higher than expected.  The pitching wedge is one degree weaker in the C524 – 44 degrees – which is bordering on weak by today’s standards.  Again, this points to a focus on consistency and forgiveness.  Every shot I hit with this wedge went straight and carried a similar distance.

tour edge e523 wedge review

Moving into the mid irons, the extreme forgiveness of the E524 irons really started to show.  I had a series of three shots that were flush, low heel, and on the toe, yet each one landed within a couple yards of the others.  The launch angles were extremely consistent, even when the contact wasn’t.  The mid irons is also where this set’s draw bias really started to show, pulling most shots to the left of the center line.  This anti-slice tendency will be a boon for most high handicap players.

tour edge e523 wedge review

Changing back to the Hot Launch C524 irons, the launch and spin were lower despite the weaker lofts.  The lofts on the C524 irons are three degrees weaker from 4I-8I, but this difference is balanced by the Iron-Wood design of the E524.  For me, the C524 irons were slightly longer , but the forgiveness was still very good.  My notes state, “Impact location barely matters,” reflecting the consistency of the ball speed and carry distances.

tour edge e523 wedge review

The two sets showed the most difference in the longest irons.  The E524 4I is one of the easiest-to-launch long irons I’ve ever hit .  In contrast, I found the C524 to launch lower, and it required more effort.  Looking at the big picture, the C524 4I is still fairly easy to hit, but it’s nowhere near the E524.

tour edge e523 wedge review

Overall, both the Hot Launch C524 irons and the Hot Launch E524 irons are forgiving and consistent , but the E524 takes it to a much higher level.  The E524 irons are in the “You need to try to get a bad result” class.  Players with more speed may find more distance in the C524.  As always, getting a fitting is the only sure way to find the set up that will maximize your abilities.

tour edge e523 wedge review

The entire 524 lineup intrigues me this year. Will you be reviewing the fairways too at some point? I saw the C524 fairway and nearly bought it immediately. based on looks alone.

' src=

Yes, we are reviewing the entire line.

' src=

Matt, are the specs reversed? Your comments on the E524 4I say 20 degrees but chart says 23 degrees.

Thank you for the note. The specs are correct, I made an error (now corrected) in my text.

Tour Edge Hot Launch E523 and C523 Drivers

For value-seeking golfers, Tour Edge Hot Launch Series drivers—the Hot Launch E523 and the Hot Launch C523 —will likely be in the consideration set.

They arrive with a retail price of just $269.99 and, while Tour Edge describes that as “mid-tier” pricing (with allowances for PXG’s occasional deep discount), by modern standards it’s on the low end of the price range—likely less than clearance-priced drivers from the industry leaders (and everyone else, for that matter).

I’d wager Tour Edge E-series will be the cheapest drivers you’ll find on big box retail shelves this season.

While price alone may be the deciding factor for many, Tour Edge is seeking to position itself as “the leader in performance-value custom fitting.” That’s an odd combination of words but the point is that, with fitting bags available at more than 1,000 locations, nobody else comes close to offering fitting options at this price point.

Granted, nobody else utilizing traditional retail distribution channels is selling drivers for $270. It’s easy to win when nobody else is competing but I suppose that’s the entire reason why Tour Edge’s 523 series exists at the price it does.

As it did last time around, the Tour Edge Hot Launch lineup will feature two product lines.

Tour Edge Hot Launch E523 Driver

A sole view of the Tour Edge Hot Launch 523 driver

The “E” in in E523 stands for Extreme and while nothing here is extreme enough to scream about, “extreme” is effectively used as a synonym for a feature set that mimics a good bit of what the industry has folded under the “MAX” banner.

According to Tour Edge, the E523 offers low (and presumably deep) center of gravity, a shallow face and a little bit of offset.

I suppose that last bit could qualify as extreme by today’s standard. We know that offset drivers can help golfers. We also know that pride prevents a healthy percentage of golfers who would benefit from them from buying them. That likely explains why very few companies offer them.

Despite the low price, Tour Edge has bundled a good amount of its technology in the E523 including :

Houdini Sole – Tour Edge-speak for a concentrated chunk of mass on the trailing edge. Its purpose is to shift the center of gravity “ultra” low and deep where it works to increase both launch and forgiveness.

Ridgeback Tech – A rail that provides additional structural support for the crown. By helping to stiffen things a bit, Ridgeback reduces crown deformation at impact which allows more energy to be transferred to the ball.

According to Tour Edge, the Ridgeback design also serves as alignment aid, though it’s fair to say your mileage may vary on that one.

An address view of the Tour Edge Hot Launch 523 driver

Diamond Face VFT – Tour Edge’s take on a variable-thickness face design. Tour Edge says the diamond shapes work as mini-trampolines. The idea is to provide more speed across the face with an emphasis on off-center performance.

Heel Weighting and Offset – As it always does, the addition of heel-weighting provides some draw bias while the offset design makes it easier to square up the driver.

New Power Channel – Tour Edge’s take on a sole/speed slot, the Power Channel promotes more speed and lower spin, particularly on low face contact.

Hot Launch E523: Who It’s For

The Tour Edge Hot Launch E523 is best suited for low to moderate swing speed players. That’s evidenced by the lightweight UST Mamiya HL-SST stock shafts. The shafts range in weight from 45  to 60 grams and feature a soft tip section to further promote high launch. (I’m really sensing a theme here).

A spec chart for the Tour Edge Hot Launch E523 driver

Other notables in the specs include a 15-degree HL option and a sensible stock length of 44.5 inches. That’s an inch to an inch and a quarter shorter than average which makes a ton of sense for the target audience.

Tour Edge Hot Launch C523 Driver

A sole view of the Tour Edge Hot Launch C523 driver

The “C” in C523 is for Competition. That could suggest a driver aimed at better players but Tour Edge bills the Hot Launch C523 as a “premium competition spec game-improvement design.”

Again, the arrangement of words is a bit odd but the positioning is that of a game-improvement design that retains a conventional appearance at address.

The target audience for the Hot Launch C523 is medium to fast swing golfers , though the stock shaft (also the UST Mamiya HL-SST) suggests it’s cheating heavily towards the mid swing speed side of the equation.

That’s what custom fitting is for.

A address view of the Tour Edge Hot Launch C523 driver

As with the Hot Launch E523, there’s a good bit of tech bundled with the C523 . Here’s what you get.

Sole Rail – Tour Edge’s take a dropdown sole design. Like COBRA (SpeedBack), TaylorMade SIM and a growing number of others, Tour Edge’s sole rail serves to push the center of gravity down while creating opportunities for increased forgiveness

Tour Edge achieves higher forgiveness by anchoring a big chunk of mass to the rear of the sole rail.

360 Face Cup – The wrap-around face piece works with the VFT diamonds to provide consistent (or at least more consistent) speed on off-center hits.

Larger Power Channel – Tour Edge has increased the size of the power channel by 85 percent relative to the previous model. The updated design allows for even greater face flexing (more speed) with reduced spin, particularly on low face impacts.

Both the Hot Launch E523 and C523 are part of Tour Edge’s 48-hour shipping arrival program. Any custom order placed before 1:30 p.m. Central time on a weekday will arrive within 48 hours.

I love Exotics and Play EXS 220 driver and hybrids but man, the paint job on these are horrible. Please Tour edge, the EXS clubs are beautiful. These would be nice looking if it wasnt for all the red paint… Black, grays and whites or blue or red accents. This looks worse than previous e522 of this series. I dont understand why your Exotics line look so good and the hot launch are , uh, cheap looking but play great. Simple fix, loose 90% of the red.

After trying almost every iron out there I purchased the E721’s a little over a year ago. They were the best and most consistent for me especially on toe hits which is my miss. The Titleist T200’s were also great but they were over twice as much without any real gain. I guess that makes me a value shopper but I would recommend to anyone to try out Tour Edge. Yes the logo is big and they have red paint but I’d say get over it. Always nice to beat the guy that think they have the latest’s and greatest with what they think are bargain clubs..

The E ridge back crown is a knock off of the Wilson Triton !!!!! I have a Triton and LOVE IT !!!! The Triton is a true long driver ,it’s like a fine tuned Formula 1 race car …..

Sellemental

That is exactly what I thought the moment I saw it !!! I had a Triton too. When I hit it well, very long. Unfortunately that was far less than half the time.

Josh Babbitt

Looks like cheap walmart clubs to me. Uber pass even though they are a forum sponsor lol

I always felt that way about the shiny Titleist driver heads.. In this case, are you referring to the sole of the club? When I’m setting up & swinging, whatever design is on the sole is irrelevant to me.

Best bargain right now is on PXG’s website. 0211 drivers for $119 and 0211 fairways and hybrids for $89.

I only read the driver article and looked at the pictures of the irons. The paint is very poorly done and looks cheap. Now, if the drivers are good and the paint is a way of bringing the price down I am all for it. If a driver performs nearly as well as the big names and is less than $300 I am all for it.

The paint though is so bad even a knock off club maker would say, ‘Jeez, guys, everyone is gonna know these are fakes;.
