Testimonials

Book now / inquiry, the trek involves walking through flowery meadows, lakes and spectacular greenery..

The route also passes through a lush forest of cedar, pine, and birch. It, therefore, offers something more diverse in terms of landscape and has more than the usual share of scenic beauty without being too physically demanding. An excellent option for beginners as well as an experienced trekker.

It is recommended that trek may be started from Askole as group can reach up to Concordia being able to see major Baltoro Peaks and return the same route in case of extreme snow conditions and unkind weather situation. We recommend that the member should take high altitude clothing/bedding, rope, crampons, ice axes etc. We also suggest you that come for this trek after having couple of week walking or acclimatized yourself. Come and visit us we will show you the real adventure paradise on earth!!!

Tour Details

Naltar daintar pass trek: embark on a thrilling high-altitude journey.

Naltar Daintar Pass Trek is an exhilarating high-altitude pathway that seamlessly connects the upper reaches of Naltar Valley with the enchanting Daintar Nala in Lower Nagar. From the bustling city of Islamabad to the serene Naltar Valley and the majestic Khunjarab Pass, each day promises new experiences and unforgettable memories.

The Naltar Daintar Pass Trek is characterized by its historic legacy of exploration and daring escapades, and stands as an alluring beacon for adventure enthusiasts and intrepid mountaineers alike. Daintar Pass symbolizes humanity’s insatiable craving for discovery and triumph. The fusion of its historical importance, coupled with its demanding terrain and awe-inspiring landscapes, renders it an indispensable destination for both thrill-seekers and mountain adventurers. By embracing meticulous preparation and nurturing an ardent ardor for adventure, you can etch your name into the annals of Daintar Pass conquerors and savor the ecstasy of an extraordinary experience.

Pioneering Endeavors: Conquering the Daintar Pass Challenge

In the year 1893, the intrepid spirit of George Cockerill etched its mark upon Daintar Pass, triumphantly accomplishing the inaugural traverse. In vivid prose, Cockerill depicted the southern side as “virtually perpendicular,” a testament to the pass’s daunting nature. While both flanks of the pass present steep inclines, prevailing consensus deems the southern-to-northern crossing to be comparatively less arduous.

Tales of Mastery: Unveiling the Northern Descent

Trevor Braham, a veteran mountaineer who dedicated years to Himalayan exploration, embraced his share of experiences with Daintar Pass. He painted a vivid portrayal of the northern descent, navigating through “230 meters of fragmented rock at a challenging 50-degree incline, culminating in the expanse of a broad crevasse.”

Embarking on the Odyssey: Choosing Your Daintar Pass Odyssey

For those who embark on the Daintar Pass odyssey, the voyage typically commences from the southern trailhead. This approach, while physically demanding, gains favor due to the relatively smoother topography in contrast to the northern counterpart. As you ascend, the panorama unveils itself, a canvas of splendid mountainous vistas and verdant valleys. The contrast of Naltar Valley’s lush greenery against the rugged outlines of the pass crafts an unworldly spectacle of beauty.

The Northern Descent: A Test of Fortitude and Skill

The northern descent is reserved for those of unwavering mettle. It necessitates a proficient and experienced mountaineer to deftly navigate the treacherous expanse. Descending over the precipice of fragmented rocks spanning 230 meters at a daunting 50-degree slope commands complete concentration and mastery. However, for those willing to embrace the challenge, the reward encompasses an unparalleled blend of exhilaration and accomplishment.

The Ultimate Challenge: Daintar Pass Triumph

For adventurers in search of the ultimate litmus test for their mountaineering prowess, Daintar Pass beckons as a dream transformed into reality. Taming this pass demands not only physical strength but also a determined mental determination and undefeatable spirit. In the domain of mountain dominations, Daintar Pass etches an indelible memory, a chapter of unparalleled achievement and boundless allure.

This beauty lies away from the hustle and bustle of Gilgit Baltistan towns and cities. It is an all-weather destination famous for being a tourist attraction for both summers and winters and providing soothing calm away from the hustle of the mainland. To those who visit Naltar in winters, it offers great skiing spots and it is the best place to visit for those who go in summers. It has lush green landscapes and captivating lakes – everyone describing it as a true paradise.</p><p><center><img style=

Naltar Valley has two villages Naltar Bala (Upper Village) and Naltar Paain (Lower Village). What sets Naltar apart from other valleys is its vast forest-covered area and its being home to three majestic lakes collectively known as the Bashkiri Lakes.

Climate/Weather Condition:

The average climate of Naltar Valley is cold. During summer it reaches a maximum of 22 degrees celsius whereas in winters it can drop down to a freezing –15 degrees celsius.

Satrangi (Rainbow) Lake, Naltar Valley

How to get there: (Accessibility)

The ride to Naltar starts from Gilgit after leaving the Karakoram Highway, if you are planning a tour, it is worth noting here that cars are not recommended for the arduous track that begins after you have left the highway, the vehicles that are suitable for the bumpy ride are 4×4 jeeps. However, the journey is worth taking as the beauty that lies beyond is simply spellbinding.

Road to Naltar Valley

What to Do in Naltar: (Attractions)

During summers the lakes act as the main tourist attractions, the track leading to the lakes is a dirt track, again accessible by 4×4 vehicles or trekking. The lakes are situated at a distance of 13 km from Naltar Bala (Upper Village) and all through the track glacial streams accompany. At two points a wide glacial stream and the river intersect and it requires skillful driving of the local drivers to get the vehicle across. During winters the lakes are not accessible because of heavy snowfall.

Naltar Valley, jeweled with many magnetic Lakes

The first lake on the way up is Satrangi Lake (Lake of Seven Colors) or Rainbow Lake or Fish Lake. As the name indicates the lake perfectly reflects many colors, particularly blue, green, and yellow. The beautiful colors that this lake reflects are because of the underwater algae in the lake. The water is still and provides a serene view to those who visit.

naltar pass trek

After that, the second lake on the track is the Pari Lake and it is around 1km north of the previous lake and is also larger than the previous one. Containing deep blue water this lake is said to host water from an underground source as there are no streams or rivers above.

Pari Lake, Naltar

The third lake in the valley is not accessible via vehicles, to reach one has to trek for a duration of 45 to 55 minutes. However, the magnificent Firoza Lake or Bodroko Lake is worth the effort. While trekking towards the lake, in 10 minutes, one passes through a plain known as the Maidaan – the surrounding contains rich green grass with streams flowing down on each side and a river in the center, from here one can take in the breathtaking snow-capped peaks.

For those who like to visit the valley in winters, it has great ski slopes. Operated under the Pakistan Air Force, the Ski Resort is located 40 km from Gilgit and acts as the main facility of the Ski Federation of Pakistan. To take the visitors to the top, the government has installed a Ski Chairlift which is 1.5 km in length.

If you like to trek, the trek from Naltar Pass to Ishkoman, the 4600 meters which provides a magical view of the whole Hindukush Range.

Naltar Valley has the best ski resort in the country

The Altitude and Terrain of K2 Base Camp Trek

The K2 Base Camp Trek is a legendary journey that takes trekkers into the heart of the Karakoram Range, offering a mesmerizing blend of high-altitude challenges and breathtaking natural beauty. Understanding the altitude variations, weather patterns, ground paths, terrain features, and water elements along this trek is crucial for a successful and enjoyable expedition.

Altitude Variations:

Starting Point (Skardu): The trek typically begins in Skardu, located at an altitude of approximately 2,228 meters (7,310 feet) above sea level. Trekkers spend a few days here for acclimatization before venturing into higher altitudes.

K2 Base Camp Altitude: The ultimate destination, K2 Base Camp, is situated at an elevation of around 5,150 meters (16,896 feet). This significant altitude gain poses challenges related to altitude sickness and requires gradual acclimatization.

Weather Conditions:

Summer Months (June to August): During the trekking season, the weather in the region is relatively stable, with daytime temperatures ranging from 10°C to 20°C (50°F to 68°F) at lower altitudes. However, temperatures can drop significantly at night, especially at higher elevations.

Monsoon Influence: The monsoon season brings occasional rain showers and cloud cover, impacting visibility and trekking conditions. Trekkers must be prepared for sudden weather changes and pack appropriate rain gear.

Winter Challenges: Outside the trekking season, winter brings harsh conditions with sub-zero temperatures, heavy snowfall, and increased risks of avalanches. The trek is usually closed during winter due to extreme weather conditions.

Ground Path and Terrain:

Rocky Trails: The trek starts with rocky trails and rugged terrain as trekkers navigate through valleys and ascending slopes. Sturdy hiking boots with good ankle support are essential for stability and protection.

Glacial Moraines: As trekkers approach higher altitudes, they encounter glacial moraines formed by the movement of glaciers. These uneven, rocky surfaces require careful footing and endurance.

Baltoro Glacier: A highlight of the trek is crossing the Baltoro Glacier, one of the world’s longest non-polar glaciers spanning approximately 63 kilometers (39 miles). Trekkers traverse the glacier’s icy surface, often using crampons for traction.

Water Elements:

Glacial Streams: Along the route, trekkers encounter glacial streams fed by melting ice. These pristine water sources are ideal for refilling water bottles but require caution due to cold temperatures.

River Crossings: Some sections of the trek involve crossing rivers, especially during periods of increased water flow from melting glaciers or rainfall. Trekkers must assess water depth and current strength before crossing safely.

Ice Features:

Glacial Ice: The presence of glacial ice formations, including crevasses and seracs, adds a sense of adventure and caution to the trek. Guides and experienced mountaineers lead groups safely through these icy obstacles.

Icefalls: Trekkers may encounter icefalls, where glaciers descend steeply, creating challenging passages. Navigation skills and teamwork are essential for maneuvering through icefall areas safely.

STAYING HEALTHY ON HIGH ALTITUDE

Excited about your upcoming Karakoram trek? Don’t trek the threat of Acute Mountain Sickness dampens the high. While it is quite common to experience AMS at high altitudes if not properly acclimatized, there are a few things that can reduce the chances of your getting sick.

Firstly, what is it? Anything above 8,000 ft. is considered as high altitude. This is the height where at atmospheric pressure begins to drop considerably i.e., oxygen molecules are more dispersed. What does this mean? It means that with every breath you take, there’s less amount of oxygen reaching your lungs. The body adjusts to this by breathing harder. And while climbing, the short breathing leads to a higher amount of carbon dioxide in your blood.

  • Daintar Pass

This semi- loop alpine trek crosses a pass and explores interesting side valleys north of the lower Hunza River.

  • Posted on February 2, 2018
  • In Hunza , Nagar

daintar-pass-trek

Daintar Pass (4500m) links the upper Naltar Valley with the Daintar Nala in Lower Nagyr. George Cockerill first crossed it in 1893 and described the south side as ‘almost vertical’. While the pass is steep on both sides, it is easier to cross from south to north. Trevor Braham, who spent from the 1940s to the 1970s in the Himalaya, describes the northern descent as ‘230m of shattered rock at a 50- degree angle, ending in a wide crevasse’.

What to Bring

Mountaineering equipment necessary to fix ropes for safety on the descent from the pass is recommended (see Mountaineering Equipment,); wearing a climbing helmet is prudent.

The Swiss Foundation for Alpine Research 1:250,000 orographical map Karakoram (Sheet 1) covers the trek.

Guides and Porters

See Guides and Porters for the Pakora Pass trek for details. Naltar Porters have the right to work only up to Daintar Pass, and Daintar porters work from the pass down to Torbuto Das. You need to prearrange to change porters at the pass on a specified date. These logistics and the necessity of paying wapasi to two groups of porters adds to the trek’s complexity and expense. Small trekking parties may be able to avoid changing porters.

It’s six stages total from Upper Naltar: (1) Naltar Lake; (2) Daintar High Camp; (3) Khaniwal; (4) Tolebari; (5) Taling; and (6) Torbuto Das.

NEAREST TOWN

Getting to/from the trek , to the start.

Several daily jeeps depart from the Jaglot bus stand on Gilgit’s Domyal link Rd to Lower Naltar and Upper Naltar (two hours). Special hires. The road to Naltar follows the Hunza River’s true right bank 25km north- east of Gilgit to Nomal, where it narrows and turns north- west up the Naltar Valley 16km to Upper Naltar.

The Jeep road continues beyond Upper Naltar to Naltar Lake. Most special hires only go as far as Upper Naltar. If you can convince a driver to go all the way to the lake, it costs additional. Alternatively, it takes five to six hours to walk on the road between Nomal and Upper Naltar. A plan to build a bridge over the Hunza River at Nomal, linking these villages to the KKH, is under consideration.

From the Finish

Torbuto Das- Gilgit jeeps depart in the morning. Otherwise, walk to Chalt and look for a ride. Two bridges over the Hunza River link Chalt to the KKH; a new one below town and another above it 1km west of a petrol station. Vehicles going down or up the KKH can give you a ride.

Days 1- 2 : Upper Naltar to Lower Shani

 2 days, 20.7km, 870m ascent

See Days 1-2 of the Pakora Pass trek for details. The Daintar Pass is visible from Shing. Even though you can reach the high camp from Naltar Lake on Day 2, it’s better for acclimatization to camp at Lower Shani (3690m). For further acclimatization, spend another day here and explore the beautiful upper Naltar Valley.

Day 3 : Lower Shani to Daintar High Camp

1-2 hours, 2km, 410m ascent

Daintar Pass is north of Lower Shani. The trail stays east (right) of the stream coming down from the ridge . Daintar High Camp (4100m) is in a level area below an obvious snowfield.

Day 4 : Daintar High Camp Tolebari

5- 5½ hours, 6.7km, 400m ascent, 1050m descent

The ascent to the pass follows the crest of a spur from the main ridge. Near the top of the angle is quite steep and a rope may be needed. It appears to be Class 2. The cornice on top can be large. A cairn marks Daintar Pass (4500m). The approach to beautiful Snow Dome (5029m) is along the ridge east- south- east from the pass. A steep scree gully is the standard descent from the pass. Beware of rock- fall and crevasses on the glacier below. Descend to Tolebari (3450m) huts and pastures, three to 3½ hours from the pass.

Day 5 : Tolebari to Torbuto Das

4- 5 hours, 14km, 1350m descent

Descend the Tolebari Nala to the herders’ huts of Taling and Daintar (2743m) in two hours. Continue along the road down Daintar Nala through a gorge to Torbuto Das (2100m), at the confluence of the Daintar Nala and Bar Nala, in two to three hours. Halfway downvalley, pass a rough trail leading north- east across the Talamutz Pass to Bar village (see Baltar and Toltar Glaciers under Other Treks,). Alternatively, across the river from the Daintar huts, a rugged trail leads south- east over the ridge (3657m) to Chalt on the Chaprot Nala’s west bank. Chalt Tourist Inn has a nice camp site and rooms.

GPS Data Altitude: 540 m

Our guide(s) will receive you from the airport. Soon you will be transferred to hotels. On this day, our participants can relax and recover from their long journey.

Pickup information It is very easy to spot our guide, holding orange placards with our company’s logo and your name on it. You must arrive at Islamabad International Airport, Islamabad. International flights normally arrive at midnight or in the afternoon. You must give us the details of your flights, both inbound and outbound at least five days prior to your arrival in Pakistan. Our staff/guide will receive you at the gates of international arrivals unless you are taking a connecting flight from another city of Pakistan. The guide/staff will transfer you to our partner hotel. In case you do not require airport transfer, please inform us in advance.

After lunch and some rest at the hotel (ideally if you are arriving in the morning between 9am to 12pm), our guide/representative will pickup all our guests around 6pm for briefing and remaining payments at our office followed by a dinner. If you are coming late, we will manage remaining payments and briefing in Skardu.

Day 02: Fly to Gilgit or drive to Chilas

Participants on this morning will take the spectacular flight from Islamabad airport to Gilgit airport. You will be able to see Nanga Parbat if clouds allow. After arrival in Gilgit, the day is free.

The domestic flights sometime get cancelled due to weather conditions. Incase of flight cancellation, you will drive to Chilas.

Day 03: Explore Local Markets and Visit Kargah Buddha

Take some time to visit the colourful local markets and become immersed in the region's culture. Later in the day, drive to Gilgit from Chilas, which will take approximately 3 hours. Upon arrival, transfer to your hotel.

Prepare to be astounded as you travel from Gilgit to the breathtaking Naltar valley, a region of incomparable beauty. Spend the night camping under the starry skies.

Day 08: Daintar High Camp Tolebari

The ascent to the pass begins after summiting an offshoot of the main ridge. A rope may be required because the angle is somewhat steep towards the top. It appears that this is Class 2. The upper cornice may be huge. A cairn marks Daintar Pass (4500 metres). The approach to the spectacular Snow Dome (5029 m) is along the ridge that runs east-southeast from the pass. The traditional descent from the pass is a dangerous scree gully. The glacier below contains crevasses and rockfall dangers. Descend 3 to 3 and a half hours from the pass to the Tolebari huts and pastures (3450m).

Day 09: Tolebari to Torbuto Das

Spend two hours descending the Tolebari Nala to the herders' homes at Taling and Daintar (2743 metres). It will take two to three hours to reach Torbuto Das (2100m), at the intersection of the Daintar Nala and Bar Nala, by continuing down the Daintar Nala through a gorge. Follow a steep path northeast across the Talamutz Pass to the Bar hamlet halfway down the valley (see Baltar and Toltar Glaciers in Other Treks). A rough trail crosses the river from the Daintar huts and leads southeast across the mountain (3657m) to Chalt on the western side of the Chaprot Nala. The Chalt Tourist Inn offers superb camping and lodging options.

naltar pass trek

Daintar Pass Trek – Overview

Daintar Pass Trek (4500m), tucked among the mountains of the Karakoram, is a difficult path that connects the upper Naltar Valley to the Daintar Nala in Lower Nagyr. Since the late eighteenth century, explorers and adventurers have been drawn to this route by its unique challenges and breathtaking landscapes.

George Cockerill successfully crossed the pass for the first time in 1893. His account describes the south side of the pass as “almost vertical,” emphasising the dangerous terrain. While both sides of the pass are steep, the climb from south to north is generally considered far more possible. Trevor Braham, a seasoned Himalayan explorer who has spent decades in the region, sheds more information on the challenges posed by Daintar Pass. The northern descent, he claims, is a heart-pounding 230 metres of fractured rock at a 50-degree angle, culminating in a wide chasm. These descriptions paint a vivid picture of how hazardous the past is.

Daintar Pass is difficult for the faint of heart; it tests your endurance and fortitude. However, it offers the opportunity to immerse oneself in the raw, untamed splendour of the Karakoram. For those who dare to go on this walk, the pass promises physical challenges and unequalled moments of awe and wonder in the heart of one of the world’s most stunning mountain ranges.

Naltar valley, a striking green hill station situated on north – west of Gilgit, hidden in surrounding mountains, due to receiving more rainfall than other valleys, it has lush forest of cedar, pine and juniper. Beside a unique colored lake enhance the charm of valley and is an ideal place for camping.

This trek involves walking through flowery meadows, lakes and spectacular greenery. It is therefore offers something more diverse in terms of landscape and has more than the usual share of scenic beauty without being too physically demanding.  A daily average of 4-5 hours walk along the river and meadows passing by and meeting with families of semi nomadic shepherds taking us to Lower Shanni campsite, offers stunning view of meadows and snow capped mountains and up to the Pakora Pass. Three hours inclined walk through meadows to the Pakora Pass high camp which looks back on the Naltar Valley forests and peaks. At the top of pass, the snow remains even in midsummer and the views stretch down to the Pakora glacier which stretches down the valley. This is an excellent trekking route for beginners as well as experienced trekkers. See the itinerary section.

Our trip costs more for a few reasons, but here are a few of the main points:

  • Fair Wages for Staff and Porters : We offer our staff and porters wages that are higher than average.
  • Exceptional Culinary Experience : Our cooks are dedicated to preparing high-quality meals that go beyond the typical Baltoro fare, adding our unique twist to hearty trekking food.
  • Comfortable Camp Setup : After a long day of hiking, we aim to make our campsites as comfortable as possible, focusing on the little details. Our camps include tables, comfy chairs, a spacious mess/dining tent, a proper toilet tent for privacy, a generator for charging electronics, and endless pots of French press coffee, tea, and plates of cookies upon your arrival at camp. These details create an unparalleled camp-life experience.
  • Dual Leadership : Each trek has a minimum of two trip leaders – one Western leader and one local leader.
  • Small Group Sizes : You will NEVER see a Skardu Trekkers Expeditions team with more than 12 people.
  • Safety Plans and Protocols : A major difference between Skardu Trekkers and our competitors is our professional and comprehensive safety plan, along with the necessary tools to handle any emergency situation. All of our guides are trained in wilderness first aid and risk management.

The Naltar Valley Trek involves a certain amount of risk as we venture deep into the mountains of a developing country. However, member safety is Skardu Trekkers’ top priority. Our experienced ground team does everything possible to ensure a safe adventure, focusing on safety first and injury prevention. Skardu Trekkers goes above and beyond to be fully prepared for emergencies, bringing all necessary tools to manage any situation. The reality on the ground in Pakistan is that other local (budget) tour operators often forgo bringing a satellite phone due to its high cost. For us, being unprepared for emergencies is unacceptable. This commitment to safety is a significant reason why clients choose us and continue to return for different adventures year after year.

All guests joining the Naltar Valley Trek must apply for a Pakistani Trekking and Mountaineering Visa. This visa is different from the standard tourist visa, so you will not be applying for a tourist visa. Skardu Trekkers provides all the necessary documentation for the visa application, including the Letter of Invitation (LOI).

Trekking experience is beneficial but not essential for the Naltar Valley Trek. The trek is suitable for beginners and seasoned trekkers alike. While prior trekking experience can enhance your comfort and enjoyment, our team is well-equipped to support beginners throughout the journey. The Naltar Valley offers a mix of scenic beauty and manageable trails, making it an excellent choice for those new to trekking.

Roughly 50% of our clients on the K2 Base Camp Trek are female, hailing primarily from the USA, the UK, Europe, Australia, and New Zealand. Over the years, we have had solo women from more than 20 different nationalities join us on this expedition. You will always be paired with another solo woman as hotel/tent mates. If there is no other female to pair you with due to odd numbers, you will not be required to share a tent. As a solo woman, you can feel safe joining the Naltar Valley Trek. We prioritize the safety and well-being of all our trekkers, and our experienced team is dedicated to ensuring a secure and supportive environment throughout the journey. We have successfully guided many solo female travelers on this trek, and our staff is trained to provide the highest level of care and attention to all participants. Your safety and comfort are our top priorities. Northern Pakistan is a very safe part of the world. We often say that you are safer traveling in Northern Pakistan as a woman than walking alone at night in Paris or New York City.

Why Leonard Nimoy Passed On Star Trek Generations

Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country

At the end of Nicholas Meyer's 1991 film "Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country," the U.S.S. Enterprise-A is ordered back to Starfleet headquarters ... to be decommissioned. This was, the crew finally realized, their final, final adventure as a crew, and the road had come to an end. Spock (Leonard Nimoy), however, gave the perfect response "If I were human," he said, "I believe my response would be: 'Go to Hell.'" He then added, hastily, "If I were human."

I can only hear Nimoy's reading of "Go to Hell" when thinking about his non-participation in "Star Trek: Generations" in 1994. "Generations," as most Trekkies might tell you, is a notably weak film, presenting a rushed jumble of ideas without much drama or profundity. The plot follows a free-floating space ribbon called the Nexus, which blows up starships but also sucks survivors essentially into Heaven, a parallel dimension of pure bliss where time has no meaning.

"Generations" begins in the year 2293 and opens with a sequence wherein Kirk (William Shatner), Chekov (Walter Koenig), and Scotty (James Doohan) oversee the maiden voyage of the U.S.S. Enterprise-B. During the test flight, the ship encounters the Nexus and Kirk is sucked inside, presumably killed. The film then fast-forwards 78 years to the era of "Star Trek: The Next Generation," where the action begins in earnest.

The original plan for the 2293 sequence was for the whole original "Star Trek" cast to be present. After they received the script though, most of the cast declined to appear because there wasn't enough for them to do. That was certainly Nimoy's thinking, which he shared in a 2007 interview with TrekMovie . When handed the script, he more or less told them to go to Hell.

Spock and his five lines of dialogue

Star Trek: Generations Enterprise

Watching "Generations," one can likely sense that certain lines of dialogue were intended for different characters. Chekov, for instance, ends up curing people in sickbay, clearly an action that should have been taken by Dr. McCoy. The whole purpose of the 2293 sequence was to seemingly kill off Kirk and insert him into the Nexus, and the rest of the cast had nothing to contribute to that. As such, most of them turned down the gig.

Nimoy noted that there was no Spock role in the script, saying that his entire job would be dryly reciting a few lines of dialogue. It seemed so useless and tacky, especially after "Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country." Nimoy felt it was a little disrespectful to offer him a "Star Trek" job and not treat his character with respect. The job was offered by "Star Trek" executive producer Rick Berman and Nimoy was blunt right to his face. As he recalled:

"There was not a Spock role. T here were five or six lines attributed to Spock in a scene with Chekov and Uhura and Kirk and whoever else was there, but it had nothing to do with Spock. They were not Spock-like in any way. I said to Rick Berman, 'You could distribute these lines to any one of the other characters and it wouldn't make any difference.' And that is exactly what he did. There was no Spock function in the script."

Koenig and Doohan, it seems, didn't much mind that they had small roles in "Generations," although Koenig did find, in retrospect, that he could have done a lot more. He even wrote and shot a scene for himself, showing how Chekov felt about the "death" of Kirk ... and it was cut .

Nimoy said 'Thanks, but I'll pass.'

Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country

Nimoy, recall, hadn't just played Spock for 25 years at that point, but had also directed two successful and respected "Star Trek" feature films with "Star Trek III: The Search for Spock" and "Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home." He also contributed to the script of "Star Trek VI" on top of playing a major role in it. Outside of "Trek," Nimoy had helmed "Three Men and a Baby," the fifth highest-grossing film of 1987, and comedies like "Funny About Love" and "Holy Matrimony."

To be asked to play tenth-fiddle to Shatner and to the entire "Next Generation" cast felt like an insult. Nimoy continued:

"I have always tried to make a contribution to these movies. There was no contribution to be made in that movie. It was just sort of 'Lets get Nimoy in here too.' I said there is nothing here I can do so I said 'Thanks, but I'll pass.'"

Nimoy returned to the role of Spock in 2009 for the cinematic reboot of "Star Trek" directed by J.J. Abrams, as well as its follow-up, "Star Trek Into Darkness," in 2013. In those films, he was the only returning cast member from the original "Star Trek" TV series and had several conversations with his younger, parallel self, played by Zachary Quinto. His character either actively participated in the plot or provided unique insight into a visiting villain. The focus on Spock was likely very appealing to Nimoy and was certainly a much better offer than what Berman had asked him to do for "Generations" 15 years earlier.

"Into Darkness" was Nimoy's final film role before his death in 2015.

One of the stops on Tuesday's RAGBRAI route is Greenfield. Two months after an EF-4 tornado ripped through town, Greenfield has rebounded.

Houses have been cleared, roads cleaned up and the town is ready to welcome thousands of bike riders.

A big reason for a quick cleanup and rebuild is due to the high number of volunteers.

"They are still going strong. There are still days that we have 30 to 50 volunteers coming in, which is wonderful because we're able to use those big groups for projects somewhat like this where they can just hone in on that and give that business owner or that homeowner the attention they need," said Barb Meister, a GoServ International Domestic Administrator.

When riders leave town, volunteers will continue to work to rebuild Greenfield.

Miami Heat | Second-rounder Pelle Larsson makes summer statement as Heat embrace the Swede life

Heat second-round pick Pelle Larsson, right, goes over video with assistant coach Wayne Ellington at the Las Vegas NBA Summer League. (Ira Winderman, Sun Sentinel)

That, the Miami Heat second-round pick out of Arizona said, simply is not the Swedish way.

“I don’t really think we have that culture in Sweden, because I think sport, in general, is just kind of secondary to education and everything else,” the Stockholm native said ahead of the Heat’s Monday night appearance in the championship game of the Las Vegas NBA Summer League . “So they don’t step in and make that decision for people. It’s kind of, you do what you want to do to have fun.

“And sport, growing up, was just to have fun. It was never like looked at like a serious career for me and a lot of my friends.”

But as with most European sports, decisions also are made early. So while this technically, at least in the eyes of the NBA, is about to be Larsson’s first professional season, there already have been seasons in Sweden with club teams RIG Lulea and BC Lulea before enrolling at the University of Utah for one season and then three at Arizona.

At 23, that makes Larsson a bit more polished than others his age, but also appreciative that the sum total of Swedish players with NBA resumes of note is limited to Jonas Jerebko, the 6-10 big man who split a 10-year NBA career between the Detroit Pistons, Boston Celtics, Utah Jazz and Golden State Warriors.

For Larsson, that makes this trek about love for the game.

“For me, the dream was always to play professionally and have this as my job, at whatever level was right for me and I could compete,” he said. “And now I’ve ended up at the highest one, so I’m really excited to keep doing what I do at the highest level.”

To a degree, from a culture where basketball ranks down the pecking order to the point that Sweden’s professional basketball league plays games in gyms of no more than 3,500 seats, Larsson very much stands as an exception.

But also with a gene pool that allowed for such an exception.

“I grew up, my dad taught me how to play,” he said. “He played in Sweden and for the national team for two years. I had an older brother that played. So I was always competing against my older brother.”

Now he enters the NBA along with another Swede, with Bobi Klintman, a native of Malmo, selected out of Wake Forest at No. 37 last month by the Pistons, seven picks ahead of Larsson.

“There’s two kinds of major basketball academies in Sweden,” Larsson explained. “Bobbi Klintman went to the other one, and then developed there through high school. And then we played tournaments throughout Europe and stuff like that, youth tournaments.

“And then I played with the under-18 national team, where a lot of college coaches come and watch you play, and I had learned from my brother, he kind of did the go pro early international route in Spain and then ended up going to college, anyway. So I kind of saw both worlds through him and just decided I want to go to the U.S. and play college than go early pro in Europe. So from that national team tournament I played really well and a lot of coaches were interested and then I chose Utah from there.”

And now the Heat chose the polished, attack-minded prospect who has been signed to a three-year contract.

Early on, the results during summer league were uneven.

“I think I kind of sped up myself a little too much, just not having played in a while,” he said. “It’s been a while since the college season ended, so I just need to get back to my own basics a little bit more and double down on that, what got me here, and then being what I’m going to be able to bring in the regular season.”

All in all, with encouraging first steps, including his 21 points, six assists and four rebounds in the Sunday victory over the Golden State Warriors that lifted the Heat into the Vegas championship game.

“He’s a tireless worker,” said Heat assistant Dan Bisaccio, who guided the team’s summer roster. “He’s a great leader on the floor and he’s just got a really good disposition and he’s a man of a craft, is the word I’m looking for. Behind the scenes, he’s always trying to work on his shot. He’s always trying to find that new angle that he can give you, that extra detail on a pick and roll. So for him, I think a lot of that, he’s a perfectionist, where he’s trying to make some plays for others, and he’s trying to get some shots, and all this.

“In the first couple of games, there’s always a natural tendency to press a little bit. Maybe a shot doesn’t fall here and there. But the thing about him is he’s never let it affect his play. Whether he’s making a shot or missing a shot, he’s always right into the next play. He’s trying to find the next drive where he can attack the paint and find plays for others. I think one of the best things that’s been established for him is he’s embraced his defensive role on that end, which is guarding everybody on the floor, guarding them 94 feet from the basket and then just being a defensive stopper. And then offensively, from there, you can just see his skillset is starting to expand.”
