The endpoint of the trek offers breathtaking views of the entire valley and is a sight to be held, and is one of the must-do treks in the monsoon season.

  • Best Season:  Monsoons
  • Difficulty:  Easy-Moderate
  • Altitude:  2100 feet
  • Region:  Matheran

How to reach Peb Fort

Peb fort

Matheran is one of the most famous hill stations in Maharashtra and makes it easy to reach via public and private transport.

There are 2-3 different trails to reach Peb fort; however, we will take about the easiest one, starting from the Matheran toy train tracks.

Via public transport:

From Mumbai, you can take a  train to Neral  from Dadar/CST and then take a local auto to the Peb start point,  Junction 134 (Peb start point) . It will cost you around  INR 100 per person , and the distance is approximately 7 kms.

From Pune you can take a train to Karjat, and then another train to Neral and then follow the instructions mention above.

Via private vehicle:

The distance on the road from  Mumbai  is  around 80 kms  and will take  2.5 hours  to reach.

The distance from  Pune  is  115-120 kms , and it will take over  3 hours  to reach the start point.

Trek route & difficulty

peb fort trek location

The trail from the toy train tracks is easy and ideal for first-timers with decent fitness levels. The trek  grade is Easy-Moderate  and will take around  1.5-2 hours  to reach the final point where the temple is.

The entire distance of the hike is around 7-8 kms .

The first section of the tracks is about 30-40 mins, and you will also come across mini-waterfalls on this route during peak monsoons. Take a right turn towards the ridge trail at the  156 Junction point . You will find markings for the right turn at this point.

The 2nd section of the trail is a slight descent to the ridge point, and it gets a bit slippery during the monsoons; hence  one needs good trekking shoes  and  should be careful  on  this part of the trail .

The 3rd section is the final part of the trail, where you reach the main fort area after crossing the ridge. Here you must climb  two staircases  to reach the main temple area of the fort.

On the way back, you can take the same route or go via the Fanaswadi route.

Fanaswadi Route:  The route is through the jungle and a bit time-consuming, and you require experience to go via this trail.

Matheran Route:  You can take the toy train route that will take you to Matheran. After reaching the point from where you 156 Junction point, you can head towards the Matheran side instead of returning to the  Junction 134 point  from where you started the trek.

Peb Fort/Vikatgad Trek Video

The Peb Fort Trek is approximately 7-8 kilometres long and usually takes around 3 to 4 hours to complete, depending on your pace and fitness level.

Peb Fort, also known as Vikatgad, is steeped in history. It was built in the time of Shivaji Maharaj, around the 17th century. It was used as a watchtower and was crucial for surveillance. The fort also served as a granary for the nearby forts like Raigad.

The difficulty level of the Peb Fort Trek is easy-moderate. While the initial stretch of the trail is easy, the path becomes steep and challenging as you ascend, requiring a good level of fitness.

Inside Peb Fort, you’ll find an ancient temple dedicated to Swami Samarth, a revered Indian spiritual leader, and it is still in use today.

Peb fort trek ❤️ easy matheran trek we all love.

I have been trekking in sahyadris for decades now. My mom always asks me, Niraj what is it that drives you to mountains ? what do you find so appealing in those mountains? Only way to show her what the mountains offer was to take her on a trek. After so many years it was time to show her the beauty of sahyadris. I was planning Peb fort for a training session when she asked if she could join. I was not sure whether she would be able to climb those ladders on this Matheran trek. But then decided to give it a try. This Peb fort trek blog will act as your Peb trek guide to plan this trek by yourself. More adventures like this one at the end of the post.

Peb Fort Temple at top of Vikatgad

Peb fort can be reached from four sides –

  • Matheran side (Railway Track Route)
  • Anandwadi village (Neral side) -Tower Route
  • Maldunge ( Panvel side) 2 different routes from this side
  • Nakhind (North side) – Nakhind Peb ridge range trek

Peb trek from Matheran side is the easiest one & the most frequented route. The treks from non-Matheran sides are longer, less frequented & tougher.

Peb Fort Map

Is Peb Trek difficult for beginners ?

Niraj, what is the difficulty level of Peb fort trek ? If the Matheran railway track route is chosen for Peb trek it can be classified as an easy trek. Some beginners may find the ladder section a bit difficult especially in monsoon. If you have some expert trekker with you then beginners can do the Peb trek easily with little motivation. Peb trek from non-Matheran side can be classified as Intermediate treks with slightly steep climbing & longer routes. From this route you will need to climb a 10 ft rock patch which has proper holds (slippery in monsoon) & a ladder with a waterfall

Doule ladder on Matheran Peb Trek

How long is the Peb fort Trek ?

Niraj, how much time does it take to complete this Vikatgad trek ? It takes 2 hours from 134 NM toy train route from Matheran. The Anandwadi route may take about 3 hours. Maldunge routes can be a bit more confusing and may take more time

What is the best time for Peb Trek

Most trekkers do the Peb trek in monsoon when there is greenery & waterfalls everywhere. Since many people turn up on monsoon weekends its better to plan it on monsoon weekdays to avoid crowds. I also prefer this trek on winter evenings to enjoy beautiful sunsets when the surroundings are actually visible as against in monsoon. Only pro trekkers visit here on summer days starting very early.

Iss Matheran trek me Khane ko kya milega ?

There are no stalls anywhere on Vikatgad – Peb fort. Its better to carry your own food & water. On monsoon weekends there are few huts which crop up on the railway track which can provide snacks. None the less once the trek is finished you can reach Matheran where you will find plenty of food & stay options. From Anandwadi & Maldunge there is absolutely nothing – sometime even not a single person on the trail especially from Maldunge

waterfall at peb ladders

What should I carry on this trek ?

On treks, first preference for food is ghar ka khana, fruits, dry fruits, lemon juice & lots of water over biscuits, breads and carbonated drinks. Also I do carry 1₹ chocolates for quick energy boosts. My normal attire includes full sleeved clothes , cap & proper trek shoes ( No flip-flops) Good goggles i.e anti-glares are must for summer treks. I also carry safety gadgets like fire starter, waterproof torch, whistle, first-aid just in case. Here are few trekking gears & food which i always carry on treks

Along with proper gear you must carry few qualities of a good human being - never trouble wild life, never draw on fort walls, never risk your life for selfies, never throw plastic anywhere (carry back all waste) and never play loud music. When in nature behave like animals. BE ONE WITH NATURE

Most common question

Plan to travel full time

The most common question that i get asked is I want to travel a lot but I dont have leaves. Should I quit my job ? For years I have suggested to not quit anything unless you have another source of income. In search of this source of income I tried freelancing , trek leading, vlogging and I realised nothing works in the long term - untill I came across trading

This is perfect fit for a traveller mindset. You can trade from anywhere around the world be it some off the grid village in Himachal or Meghalaya, be it some island in Andaman. All you need is an internet connection and a trading account. You can earn by trading for 1-2 hrs a day and would have freedom to do anything in the free time.Or you might have just earned enough in a day to take the month off travelling around the world. If you are able to learn this then it has potential to make all your dreams come true. I would suggest you take it up as a side project for 6 months to see if you have patience & intellect to master it.

How to reach Peb fort from Mumbai & Pune ?

Where is the Peb fort located? If you havent realised it till now then Peb lies in the Matheran range of hills in Maharashtra. For the Peb trek from Matheran & Anandwadi the nearest railway station is Neral which is about 80 kms from Mumbai & 120 kms frm Pune . Neral has lots of trains from both Pune & Mumbai and hence is the cheapest preferred mode of transport to reach Peb.

  • Peb via Matheran toy train railway route: (134 NM) This is the easiest route to reach Peb / Vikatgad. The starting point of the trek is at intersection of the railway track route & the road to Matheran( Dasturi Naka). Peb trek starts at 134 NM ( railway track marker location ) on the Matheran – Neral toy train route. From 134 Nm one has to walk to 155 Nm (about 40 minutes) on the railway track to take a diversion from where the actual Peb trek starts (1 hr) . From Neral one can get on the shared taxi (Rs 100) for Matheran and ask them to drop at 134 Nm ( Or just mention Peb trek start or the route for Kadyavarcha Ganpati ). On completing the Peb trek after returning to 156 Nm we need to walk to 180 NM @Matheran to get a shared taxi for Neral. This Peb fort trek blog describes the same trek journey.

  • Peb fort via Anandwadi: This is a lengthier trek version which requires experience. One can reach Neral Station and walk 3 kms to reach Anandwadi or may be just take a rickshaw. From Anandwadi it takes about 2 hours to reach the top of ridge. Since the trail follows a series of electric towers this is also called as “ Tower Route “. The trail diverts from the third tower to reach the top via a waterfall route. From the ridge there is a 10 ft rock wall , a cave & a waterfall ladder (shown at the top of blog) which one needs to cross to reach top in an hour.
  • Peb Fort from Panvel side: There are two routes from Panvel side . One starts from Maldunge & another from neighboring Komaltekdi village. The maps for these routes are available in my Project Matheran blog.
  • Peb fort from Nakhind : This is a full blown range trek for which I will write a separate blog.

Peb fort trek Blog : TheFreeBird ‘s Story

I had planned an evening sunset from Peb. But when my mom decided to join me I was not sure whether we would make there in time for sunset. In hindsight my mom made me realize I do get my trekking genes from her as she climbed the fort without any problems in time for the sunset. So proud of her. I took my Xpulse all the way to Matheran and parked it next to the 134 NM spot . A proper parking space is available for bikes and cars free of cost.

Peb trek start point at Matheran 134NM

Being weekday I didn’t expect to find any other people on the route. Though in the above picture you can see 3 kids who were making reels on tracks – Instagram has ruined every place. During monsoon there are many waterfalls on this route but being winter I didn’t expect to see any waterfalls. Few small waterfalls at the start itself got me excited and hopeful for great evening.

waterfall on Matheran Railway route to Peb

The Matheran toy train takes 2.5 hours to reach from Neral to top. Being a toy train the train’s speed is very less and the track has very less gradient. It felt like a flat surface & we walked at a fast pace. I expected my mom to get tired but she was doing a very good time. Only time we stopped was to get a picture below.

Reaching Peb

While walking from 134 Nm towards 156 NM we were lucky to come across the Matheran train going down towards Neral. I was so busy taking videos that i almost forgot to take a photo. Here is the train after it passed us. The train moves at a snails pace and gives ample time for the trekkers to move. You get smiles & waves from the children onboard the train.

Matheran Neral toy train as seen on the Peb Trek

Once we crossed the 155Nm Peb fort became visible in all its glory. The Datta temple at top was looking so beautiful in the evening light. Its barely visible in the picture below but i enjoyed the view in real time.

Peb fort trek blog : Reaching Peb from Neral Matheran railway

After 155 Nm we reached an arch from where we descend to Peb fort. As we took the stairs down we reached a bifurcation where left route goes to Kadyavarcha Ganpati & other takes you to Peb. My mother wanted to visit this temple – typical – but since we were low on time we decided against it.

Peb trek blog : Walking down from railway track to Peb fort

Once we started walking towards Peb fort the greenery started to disappear and we were walking through tall grass. Atleast looking at the fort in front we knew where we had to go

Walking down through the grass towards Peb

At one point we reached a rocky patch which would definitely be slippery in monsoon. My mom showed courage to walk down the section without taking my help. These patch along with the first ladder is the difficult part of this descend

Peb trek blog : Slippery trek route

The ladder is sturdy but wobbles a little. Some steps are slightly loose and might scare some one if not attentive. Once this ladder was done the remaining descend is a simple one. Finally I could see the fort clearly & it was another 30 minutes to reach the top. It was about 530 pm and i didnt want to miss the sunset , we moved ahead.

How to reach Peb

We reached a rock which had eroded in such a way that it has formed horizontal slabs which felt like natural stairs. Here we saw a big monkey which shouted loudly. After we reached home mom told me that she was scared because of that monkey but didnt tell me as she didnt want to burden me. I told her I already felt that but it was just my freind who was greeting you😁

Ladders at Peb Vikatgad

These stairs are the last piece of the Peb puzzle which needs to be conquered to reach the top. These stairs feel scary with all the shakes and loose steps. There is another set of ladder on the other route coming from Anandwadi. At the top there is a Shiv mandir, Swami Samarth Math , Datta temple & cave. But with the time limit we decided to just visit the Datta temple at the top and enjoy the sunset.

Sunset from Peb Vikatgad - kalavantin prabalgad visible

By the time i crossed the ladder the sun was at horizon. In winter the sunlight dies real quick hence i hurried towards the Datta mandir, with a look back I saw the mighty Matheran plateau.

View from Peb Vikatgad - Matheran visible from Peb

After 2 hrs of trekking we finally reached the top. As a gift we got to experience a beautiful winter sunset. Many hills are visible from top which were slowly disappearing as the sunlight was dying. With few peaceful moments at summit we started our way back.

All forts visible from Peb Vikatgad blog -Prabalgad Kalavantin Malanggad mhaismal chanderi tahuli nakhind

We reached the 156 NM railway track in the dying sunlight. If we had taken public transport to reach Peb we would need to walk towards Matheran over the railway track towards 180 NM for getting shared taxi @Dasturi Naka. On the way towards Matheran we could see the Kadyavarcha Ganpati from the railway track. We however had to walk back on the same track as my bike was parked at 134NM. This is how the idol appears from the track in daytime.

Kadyavarcha Ganpati on Peb trek route

At 134 NM my mom was so glad to have completed the trek sucessfully. Hopefully she understands the meaning of trekking in sahyadris now. Got on my bike and headed home.

That’s it for the Peb fort trek blog.

Great. You have been trekking a lot around Karjat region. If you have two days, you can try Irshal-Prabal-Matheran-Peb. Connecting ridge between Irshal-Prabal. Shiv mandir for stay on machi Prabal. Matheran via Shivaji’s ladder. Also, Chanderi is missing from your list. Happy trekking.

Thanks Shishir. I am redoing my old treks for writing blogs. Will definitely plan the range treks some day after I finish all the Matheran trekking routes which I am currently trying to complete in #ProjectMatheran. Thanks a lot.

Vikatgad Peb Fort Trek: A Quick Look

Location: Sahyadri Hills, Maharashtra Elevation: 2,100 feet Difficulty: Easy to Moderate (varies depending on the route) Best Season: Monsoon

Peb Fort Also known as Vikatgad, Peb Fort is a popular monsoon travel destination in Maharashtra . Located in the Matheran hill range, the fort is 2,100 feet above sea level. It is well known for Kadiabarcha Ganapati and is part of the route that follows a railway line.

It’s easily reachable by public transportation, being less than 120 km from Pune and about 80 km from Mumbai. For those seeking a great outing in Matheran, Peb Fort is the perfect trip with five distinct paths that range in length and complexity.

History Of Vitakgat Peb Fort

The origins of Peb Fort remain shrouded in a veil of mystery. Some believe it was built during the Satavahana dynasty (230 BCE – 225 CE), while others attribute its construction to the Shilahara kings (810-1260 CE). However, concrete evidence points towards the 17th century, when it was strategically fortified by the Maratha Empire under the reign of the legendary Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.

Following the decline of the Maratha Empire, Peb Fort gradually fell into disrepair. However, its strategic importance remained undeniable. In 1818, the British East India Company captured the fort and used it as a prison for rebellious leaders. Over time, nature began to reclaim its dominion, transforming the once-proud fortress into a picturesque ruin.

Best seasons to visit Peb Fort Trek

Peb Fort’s beauty unfolds in different ways throughout the year, so the “best” season depends on what you seek:

1. Monsoon (June-September):

  • Emerald Embrace: Lush greenery explodes everywhere, waterfalls cascade, and the air is refreshingly cool.
  • Dramatic Views: Clouds paint the sky with vibrant hues, and the valleys below glisten with a unique charm.
  • Slippery Slopes: Be prepared for muddy paths and potential landslides, especially on the jungle trail.

2. Winter (November-February):

  • Clear Skies & Sunshine: Enjoy panoramic views unobstructed by clouds, perfect for photography and taking in the vastness.
  • Pleasant Weather: The dry and sunny days are ideal for comfortable hiking without breaking a sweat.
  • Less Waterfalls: The cascading beauties might not be as dramatic as during monsoon.

3. Summer (March-May):

  • Fewer Crowds: Enjoy a quieter trek if you don’t mind the heat.
  • Sun-Kissed Landscapes: Witness the golden hues of the hills and valleys bathed in sunshine.
  • Scorching Sun: Be prepared for hot and humid conditions, especially during midday.

The Matheran ranges may be seen in full view from the top

Standing atop Vikatgad Peb Fort, a dizzying panorama unfolds before you. The verdant Matheran ranges stretch out like a wrinkled emerald tapestry, dotted with charming hill stations and shimmering lakes.

The Challenging Trail To The Top

The fort’s extremely narrow ascent to the summit is one of its most intriguing features. A rock patch with a simple slope must be climbed to reach the summit if you are ascending it from the north. However, if you arrive at the fort from the Matheran end, the temple is out of reach due to a flimsy ladder that overlooks the deep valley!

An opportunity to stroll across the verdant Matheran valley

There’s no better time to explore Matheran’s diverse flora and animals than during the monsoon. It’s much more enticing when you can combine the Peb Fort trek with a beautiful stroll along the Matheran Valley!

Peb Fort Trek difficulty level

Peb Fort Trek difficulty level depends on your chosen path:

  • Railway Track Route: Easy-breezy! This 4-km stroll follows scenic tracks, perfect for beginners and families. Expect stunning valley views with minimal strain.
  • Jungle Trail: Moderate and more adventurous. This 6-km route winds through lush forests, waterfalls, and rocky patches. Prepare for some climbing and a good workout, but the reward is a truly immersive experience.

Peb Fort Trek – Trekking along the railway tracks(INR 400)

Lush Green Peb Fort

Imagine walking on a railway track amidst dozens of waterfalls. Imagine walking on a railway track surrounded by dense jungle. Imagine walking on a railway track in foggy weather. Imagine walking on a railway track admiring the lush green valley views. Oh hello, I am not talking about the Dudhsagar Waterfall trek . This railway track then leads you to a beautiful Fort known as “ Peb Fort ”.

Waterfalls as seen on Peb Fort Trek route

Peb Fort also known as “ Vikatgad ” is located in Raigad district of Maharashtra. Due to its proximity to the famous hill station Matheran near Mumbai, the fort attracts many trekkers mostly during the weekends. From the top of the Peb Fort, one can enjoy a 360 -degree view of the entire Matheran Hill range. One can choose the trek route of Matheran toy train track to reach the fort.

 How to reach Peb Fort

The cheapest and most convenient way to reach the Peb Fort is via railways. The nearest railway station to Peb Fort is Neral Station. From Mumbai take a Karjat bound local train and get down at Neral Station. If you are coming from Pune, catch any Mumbai bound train and get off at Karjat. Now catch a CST-bound local train from Karjat and get down at Neral. Also, there are few direct trains from Pune to Neral(Sahyadri exp).

How to reach Peb Fort from Pune Mumbai

From Neral station, you can catch a shared Taxi for Matheran(INR 80) and ask the driver to drop you at the start point of Peb Fort trek ( 134 NM) which is few kms before the Dasturi Point.

Start point of Peb Fort Trek

Difficulty level of Peb Fort Trek

The difficulty level of Peb Fort trek depends on which route you are taking. I took the easiest route to reach the Peb Fort trek which starts from 134 NM . In terms of difficulty, I would rate this route as an easy to medium level . One or two sections to reach the Peb Fort are little tricky especially in the monsoon season as it gets slippery, so be extra careful. There is no rope or railing for assistance, so a small mistake can be life-threatening.

Various trek routes to reach Peb Fort

1) Matheran toy train route : This is the easiest route amongst all available. It starts from the rail marking 134 NM until you reach 154 NM from where you leave the railway track route and start the descend for the Peb Fort. After the descend, one has to ascend for around half an hour to reach the Fort top where there is a temple. On your return journey, you can reach the same point 154 NM and trek this time towards 180 NM which is near to Dasturi Point / Aman Lodge .

2) Aanand wadi/Fanaswadi route : From Neral station, you can take a shared auto to reach Aanand wadi which is around 3-4 kms. You can also walk all the way to base village. The trek route to reach the Peb Fort from the village is a bit confusing and one has to follow the electric poles which guide you to the correct path. If you are a beginner, I would recommend you to take a local guide along with you.

My journey to Peb Fort

“Trekking in a dense jungle along the railway tracks” sound interesting, isn’t it? But is it really allowed to trek along the railway tracks? Trekking on the railway track is a punishable offence with a penalty of imprisonment for up to 6 months and or fine up to Rs. 1000. So how is it possible to trek to the Peb Fort along the railway track?

the railway tracks Matheran

The railway tracks in Matheran

The toy train services from Neral to Matheran is mostly closed during the monsoon due to the chances of landslides in the rail route. Also, during the other seasons, the toy train runs at a very slow speed so trekking isn’t banned on these tracks. I was fascinated to see a few photos of the trek on Instagram with waterfalls pouring on the railway track. That moment, I decided that I was visiting it very soon.

I along with one of my friends took the Sahyadri express from Pune(7:00 AM) which reaches the Neral station at 10:00 AM. The rail route passes through the ghat sections of Lonavala and Khandala and provides some stunning views of Sahyadris.

Foggy at Peb Fort

From Neral station, we took a shared taxi for Matheran (INR 80 per person) which dropped us to a junction called 134 NM from where one can begin the Peb Fort trek.

Enjoying the views on Peb Fort trek

Peb Fort as seen from the railway track

After doing the Dudhsagar Waterfall trek a few years back, I was waiting desperately to experience something of similar sorts. I was getting excited, excited to walk along the railway tracks. Without wasting any time, we started with the trek.

After a few minutes into trekking, I shouted in excitement as I got a glimpse of a waterfall falling on the railway track. I rushed towards it, threw my bag in excitement and the other moment I was beneath the waterfall completely drenched.

I was loving every moment of trekking along the railway lines. The views of the lush green valleys were fabulous and the sky was crystal clear. After walking for around 45 minutes or so, we made it to a point 154 NM from where one has to take the staircase way and start the descend to reach Peb Fort.

Matheran Neral Railway track

This patch is a bit tricky as there are no ropes or railing for safety and it generally gets little slippery in the monsoon. A small slip can throw you hundreds of meters down into the deep valleys. So be extra careful while traversing this patch.

Further ahead starts the ascend which takes you to the ladder section. From the ladder section, it takes around 20 minutes to reach the topmost point of the fort where a temple dedicated to Swami Samartha is situated.

The 360-degree view from the top is just breathtaking. It was very windy and within moments the fort was completely covered under clouds. Then it started raining heavily. I sat near the temple just admiring the amazing views and thanking God for the gift of beautiful nature he has given us.

At the top of Peb Fort

After spending an hour at the top, we begin with the return journey. At the point 154 NM, we decided to take the other route so as to reach Matheran. Just as you pass the point 156 NM, you will get a good view of the huge Lord Ganesh Idol. The route is quite scenic as it is mostly covered with dense forest.

The sunlight was trying its absolute best to make its way through the dense forest. After walking for an hour, we made it to the point 180 NM which is situated near to Dasturi point/ Aman Lodge.

Dense Jungle of Matheran

We decided to go to Matheran from Dasturi point again by walking along the railway tracks. I had already visited Matheran a few years back so just wanted to visit it in search of good food as I was starving.

After enjoying some tasty local food at Matheran, we returned back to Dasturi point from where we got a shared taxi for Neral. With all the beautiful memories, we took a return train to Pune.

Food and stay options at Peb Fort Trek

As such, there is absolutely no food option available during the trek so make sure you carry few eatables along with you. Once you end the trek at Dasturi Point, there are few small dhabas where you can enjoy the local food. Do carry at least 2 water bottles along with you. ‘

For stay option, you can either pitch in a tent at the top of the Fort or stay at the Swami Samartha temple. Also, there are a lot of stay options available at Matheran so you can find the same once you reach Matheran.

The tent that I carry during the treks is Quechua Arpenaz 2 Tent . It has enough space for 2 people.

Undoubtedly, the monsoon months of July, August and September is the best time to visit the Peb Fort as the surroundings are lush green and the weather is extremely pleasant. Also, you can enjoy the numerous waterfall falling on the railway tracks. But remember, for the most part of the day the surroundings may not be visible from the fort due to the heavy fog.

Pune to Neral: INR 100( return journey, local train)

Neral to the Start point of Peb Fort: INR 80

The entire journey from Pune to Peb Fort and back turned out to be extremely delightful. Walking along the railway tracks, enjoying the mesmerizing views from the top of Peb Fort, enjoying the local food in the foggy weather at Matheran, and taking a bath in a waterfall, I couldn’t have asked for much in a days’ time. I hope I will return soon to this beautiful fort, maybe by trekking from the other route.

Important! This blog describes a winter trek through one of the rarely used, longer routes to Vikatgad. A word of caution before you head elsewhere looking for the more often used, shorter route: Consider visiting Vikatgad only if you have done 10+ moderately difficult treks even if you are going with a commercial trekking group. A lot of unfortunate accidents have happened on the fort in the last couple of years and it is best avoided during heavy rains when the exposed trails become dangerously slippery. Read this  news article for one such incident. Check out the following forts for easier monsoon treks- Mumbai: Karnala, One tree hill route to Matheran. Lonavla: Lohgad, Korigad, Tikona & Tung. Pune: Sinhagad, Raigad.

Account of the Trek: Vikatgad (Jan ‘15) was my first actual trek (Advise: Don’t follow our footsteps and head to Vikatgad for your first trek. We were incredibly lucky to come back unscathed. Get experience on easier treks and then head here). This post is the longest that you ‘ll come across on this blog one of the longest and therefore divided into two parts. My objective behind a very detailed account is to take the reader through all the emotions that we, as first timers went through and hence, to experienced trekkers, may seem to exaggerate the difficulty. Indeed, my later visits to Vikatgad have been fairly easy and my blog posts reflect the same. Notes have been added to help the reader avoid the mistakes we committed. The Gang : Akshita, Aparna, Mansi, Omkar G, Persis, Ruchit, Shruti, Yogesh & Me

It was 3 pm and we were at the 15 feet rock patch. What should have been an easy trek based on some blogs, was testing us to the limits. We had been climbing for 7 hours and reached a height of 1500 feet but the summit was still 500 vertical feet away. Me: Have we bitten off more than we can chew? Persis: I think so too. This conversation is etched in my memory as if it was yesterday. We should have been at the peak by noon according to the schedule we had made and panic had begun to set in slowly. What if we couldn’t make it to safe ground before dark? There was barely any network in that region. Mental exhaustion has a way of making things seem direr than they actually are.

But we ‘ll come to that later. Let’s start from how it all began! 🙂

The initial plan was to go for a hike along the lines of what I had done in the preceding December.

Omkar, then came up with this suggestion of a proper trek instead of a hike.

“How about Vikatgad?” he asked.

Vikatgad, also known as Peb Killa, is a fort in the Matheran range and may have derived its name Peb from the ‘Goddess Pebi’ at the base of the fort. Historical references indicate that Shivaji Maharaj used the caves on the fort for grain storage.

Omkar had attempted this trek earlier with his friends but aborted it midway after they lost the way without a map to help them out. I asked my classmates about changing the plan to a trek and they were more than eager. So I read some trekking blogs to collect information about the route and even found a traced path on Wikimapia! woohoo! THE TREK WAS ON! ( Here is a list of some excellent links to get information about prospective treks)

1 (1)S

As has become the norm now, a plan isn’t a plan unless a new WhatsApp group is made for it 😉 So the group was made and members were added, a high-res map was made (whatever I could manage with my crude Photoshop skills back then), a list of stuff that we’ ll require was compiled and a restless night later, the day of the Trek was here!

Some people backed out the previous day and Yogesh (without whom I don’t think we would have made it back in time) jumped on the trek bandwagon at the last moment (Literally! He was about to miss the train from Kurla!) and the party reached Neral by 8 am.

4

We took a right turn from Neral (east) ticket counter (Left goes to Matheran via Dasturi Naka) and a quick breakfast followed in one of the many restaurants that line up the station road. Cross a bridge and the second left takes you towards the Neral-Badlapur road.

5

There are two routes to the base hills of Vikatgad- One goes through Anandwadi and the other goes through Dilkap college boundary. You can see the Dilkap college across the road and a bridge on the left.

6

We turned left upon reaching the road and then took the first right after the bridge. Our first landmark was Mohachiwadi-

7

Base village for Vikatgad is Anandwadi, the way to which is through a broad tarred road from Mohachiwadi. People wanting to cut down the walking distance can take an auto directly till the base village for less than 100 bucks. But we were a cash-strapped lot and besides, what’s the fun in breezing through the roads cocooned in a vehicle when you could as well enjoy the scenic walk? It takes less than an hour to reach and is a pleasure, especially during foggy Monsoon mornings!

8

The map we were using indicated a right after reaching Anandwadi. About a km before the base village, we saw a small hamlet which is known as Komalwadi.

9 (3)

Taking the right towards the wadi, we reached a dry river bed in 10 mins and criss-crossing through the numerous fields that dot the landscape on the other side of the bed, we made our way to the foothills of Vikatgad.

9 (2)

Just as were approaching the foothills, we walked into the boundary of some villager’s cow-shed. Unable to find a way out and looking around like headless chickens brought a good Samaritan out of some nearby hut and he promptly showed us a detour around a field which was the way to climbing the base hill and onward to the electric tower with a big cement base. (If you are going in monsoon, the overgrown grass can make it tough to find the path- remember this, you climb the hill to the right of the first elevated tower) Slowly we started climbing the hill and two key differences between my December rail hike and this trek struck me: ONE- The short steep climbs can leave us couch potatoes breathless. TWO- You have to find your way unlike the hike where you just blindly follow the tracks to Matheran, so this is a little tough mentally as well.

Since none of us had ever trekked before, save for Mansi and Yogesh, we were struggling and it was Mansi who came up with the idea of picking up a stick to assist in climbing.

10

Soon we reached a tower with a huge cement base and climbed a little further onto a thinly forested plateau where we came across some villagers on their way back after collecting firewood. It’s a good practise to always confirm whether you are on the right route with villagers whenever you get the chance coz here in Sahyadri, the localites are your google maps! 😛 Doing the same, we marched ahead not knowing that this was going to be our last brush with a fellow human being for a good 7 hours. Crossing the forest, we reached a clearing from where one can clearly see the Vikatgad.

11(1)

For the Normal route, cross three elevated towers and then you take the path ahead that goes straight from the clearing towards the point shown in the earlier pic. On this route, a prominent landmark is a hollow tree you come across after some distance from the clearing before entering the forest and climbing up a dry waterfall to the left-most col on the ridge.

This is where missed our path for the first time. A lot of blogs advised following the tower route and we did so quite ‘literally’. It’s always prudent to use your instinct and not take a bloggers version to be the last word. (The irony! I know 😛 )

NOTE: Sahyadri is home to a dynamic culture and the people in the villages use different paths to reach a certain place, sometimes out of convenience and sometimes out of necessity (e.g. wildfires). So you may come across some new paths that weren’t there when someone else visited a particular place.

We took the path on the right side at the bifurcation since the 4 TH tower was on the right of the clearing. Even though it did seem like we had lost the way completely, I came to know later that the route we ended up on, is actually a longer route to Vikatgad that people take when coming from Nakhind towards Vikatgad. Here is a post about my later trek traversing the Nakhind-Vikatgad-Matheran .

11

(This route of ours will henceforth be referred to as the summer route in this post)

VIKATGAD a

About half hour after crossing the tower lines such that they now lay on our left, we found an opening in the forest on our left that seemed to lead to the col (a depression between two mountains) before the tower on the ridge (landmark 2).

12 (2)

THIS IS WHERE OUR ADVENTURE STARTED! 😉

Taking the forest route which steadily climbed up, we managed to take a lesser used passage and ended up in a path parallel to the correct one.

12

Making our way through thorns, shrubs and cobwebs (which is enough indication to know you have lost the way), we reached a point where you could see the light seeping through the forest but the path ahead was blocked with wild growth. Not wanting to head back with the col so close, I tried to find a way through to the correct path and after looking around for a couple of minutes found a narrow steep way through trees. It wasn’t easy but everybody found their inner COMMANDO and crouched their way through to the correct path in a manner that would have made Indian Army proud! 😛

The Col was barely 5 minutes from this point and we slumped down to take a breather.

13 (2)

My trusty Samsung Core entered ZEN MODE 😉 and summoned network out of the blue to start pinging with messages from our classmates. Ironically, the first msg I read was ‘Have a safe trek’ on the class whatsapp group that made me smile recounting the ordeal we had just been through in the last hour. But then it’s the intention that matters after all and it remains a sweet memory! 🙂

After getting some Glucon-D (courtesy Aparna who can be seen busy making it in the col picture) in our system, we started towards the tower on the ridge. There are two ways from col. The path that goes down into the valley heads to Dodhani (Base village for the Sunset Point trek to Matheran) and the other one on the left side goes towards Vikatgad. It’s a narrow path and leads you to the tower in 10 mins. The Tower on the ridge, as we had christened it, was our third landmark and its sight barely an hour after thinking we were lost for good felt like a small victory in itself! The grand plans of roaming Matheran after climbing Vikatgad long forgotten, we were enjoying the moments one at a time. 😀

13

Passing the tower, you see a 25m high 30-degree steep climb up a hill. Ruchit, Mansi, Shruti and me climbed up followed by Akshita, Persis, Aparna, Omkar with Yogesh bringing up the latter part (climbing with his and Aparna’s bag as well). Halfway up the hill, I heard my name. I looked back and told Akshita to go up ahead as I slid down on my haunches towards Persis who was about 6 meters up from the base.

14

I asked her what’s the matter, and she replied that she couldn’t do it. To be truthful, it wasn’t easy to climb this patch, especially in the first trek. You could see the valley on either side of the ridge with dried plants providing the only cover between you and a 200 feet drop.  I told her that going back wasn’t an option. We were closer to Matheran than Neral and I hadn’t been tracking our route on any app so finding our way down the forest was another question I didn’t want to face. The ridge had holds at alternating steps, though only one person could climb at a time.

So I told her that I can’t help her. “Nobody can. Only you can help yourself and You can do it. You have to! There’s no other option”. She looked at the path ahead and said she ‘ll do it. And boy! did she do it! Steadily made her way up like a seasoned trekker. I came down a couple of steps to the place where Aparna was. She was scared of the valley as well. Thankfully, a couple of words of encouragement was all that was needed and she made her way up as well without any help.

Omkar had frozen some feet from where I stood and said he’s scared of heights.

My jaw dropped. I was like you had said you don’t know if you are scared of heights when I had asked before the trek and pat came the reply which is one of the best-remembered lines from the trek: “EVEN I FOUND OUT JUST NOW!” 😀

I had dealt with acrophobia for the better part of my teenage years until my maiden trip to Matheran back in ’11 made me overcome it bit by bit. So I knew what he was going through. Yogesh said he ‘ll help him and told me to go ahead. I made my way ahead and upon reaching the top of the first hill did the enormity of the task in front of us dawn upon me.

15-001

Vikatgad stood in front of us in all its majestic glory. If mountains could be given human qualities, Vikatgad had to have plenty of stubbornness- it won’t bend to help you, you had to climb it on its own terms and you ‘ll be duly rewarded. The path ahead was clear till the flag post. A steep descent down the hill followed and we came to a small rock patch with a 5 feet gap in between. Circumventing the rock, you climb and then traverse a couple of small hills (where we had an impossible lunch on a 30’ slope)

16

A small climb from the last hill brings you to the toughest part of the trek-

17 (2)S

The approach path itself is at an incline and is flanked on both sides by deep valleys. Couple this with half holds, a narrow ledge between the two levels and the rock stands like a gate whose purpose is to make sure that only the ones willing to risk life and limb can gain entry to the hallowed fort that lies behind it. Find out how we went past this shortcut to hell/heaven, read the Second part !

Trek to Peb Fort, Vikatgad

Photo of Ankit Patel

After a sleepless night I woke up early in the morning at 3:45 AM. I checked outside for any sign of rains but everything seemed to be clear. So I woke up rest of my friends. But at around 4:45 AM it started raining heavily and we were in a 50-50 situation. After 30 minutes of turmoil we finally decided to leave.

At 5:45 AM we boarded a local train from Andheri and reached Dadar station. Quickly we shifted to Central Railway and waited there for 15 minutes. The 6:24 Karjat fast train arrived at 6:30 AM. We boarded and headed towards Neral .

At 7:50 AM we reached Neral station. We had a little refreshment there and asked local shops for direction towards the base. After a walk of 45 mins we reached Fanaswadi village which is the base of fort.

We started ascending around 8:45 AM, taking a wrong route which eventually got us to an electric tower. It almost took away our 20 minutes of extra time and energy as well. There we took a break and had a good view of the base village. Thereon we learned that we had to follow the electric towers.

After some walking through moderate plantations we reached to a point where the route got divided into two ways. It wasn’t easy to make out which way to proceed. We took the way to our right where we met a few local people from surrounding village. They said that the route was the one which turned towards left. So we reverted back and proceeded with that route.

This is where the trek actually started becoming moderately difficult. We started entering into dense forest. We found a couple of markings on ground and a tree which directed towards the further route. The trail was narrow and we were surrounded by bushes and trees. I was afraid of insects and reptiles crossing our way, but thankfully we didn’t find any. Though we found many crabs on the route. One of my friends had slipped here, causing a small cut in his palm.

We were then abruptly stopped by a stream of waterfall. We had no clue where to proceed, whether to cross the stream or follow it’s direction. There was no route ahead so we had the only option of going against the flow of water. At that moment we were just stunned with an adventurous feel gushing through our veins. Gradually we kept on clearing the rocky patch with water flowing through them.

After some time we reached flat rocks which had moss on it and were almost steep. We were a little frightened as the route was not clear and it became a little difficult to crawl on the wet rocks. We hooted to a group ahead of us, for the directions. Gladly they hooted back and we moved forward helping each other cross the rocks. Every step here was becoming a decider of life. Somehow we managed to get hold of the situation. ‘ Ganpati Bappa Morya ’, we shouted together as we reached on a flat safe surface.

There we met a group of people who were descending after a night trek. After resting for few minutes we resumed back and started ascending with the difficult rocky pinnacle. It was windy, scary and dangerous.

We completed the first half of this patch somehow. I was leading ahead and reached at a point where the patch was getting divided into second phase. This was the spot where we lost all our confidence. There was a huge rock with a small rope attached to it. The rope had a loop at one end. We sat back and thought of going back. But the route which we had covered was equally dangerous. I attempted two times but wasn’t able to make it across the rock. We waited there some time for a group behind us. We gained some confidence when they joined us. I took an initiative to lead with the task. Glad that a local person was descending from there, who helped the rest of us to cross the rock. It was a delight when we had a resting time after that clearance.

Within a while we reached at a cave. It had a shrine of God and was a good place for shelter, though we didn’t halt there. Further ahead we faced the first  shidi  (metal stair). It took us a while there.

We met many people over there who had started their trek with the descending route. It was almost done and we were about to reach the 2100 ft height, the topmost pinnacle of the mountain. The soil here had eroded, it was slippery and wet. The final rocky patch was too scary, at least for me. Actually that was not the correct route, but we had come half way so had to stick with it. Struggling we reached atop where there was a temple of  Swami Samartha . It had  padukas  of him in it. It was heaven. All we could see around was clouds and fog. It was too difficult to withstand the wind. We hugged each other in delight for completing half of our trek and reaching at the top. It felt proud.

After spending some time there we started decending with the route to Matheran . At first we had a simple plateau region where we clicked some pictures of the mountain range of Matheran.

As we moved further we had to climb down two stairs, which took a lot of time because too many people accumulated there. Everything seemed to be smooth. But it started raining heavily thereafter which made it difficult to walk in the wet soil. There was heavy fog everywhere and nothing was visible clearly. We had to cover a long inclined trail to Matheran where we encountered many waterfalls and ridges. It was exciting and adventures. Within couple of hours we reached Matheran mini train railway. It was a sigh of relief for all of us. We all chanted ‘ Ganpati Bappa Morya ’ and thanked God for safe completion of the trek. We walked gradually following the tracks. It took us 45 minutes of walk to reach the main road. We hired two taxis and headed towards Neral station. We reached home around 7:30 PM, an hour ahead than the scheduled time.

It was an adventurous and thrilling trek. We were lucky that we merged with another group or else it would have been difficult for three of us to find the route. This trek taught us many things and gave us beautiful memories to treasure for lifetime.

Peb fort and Kadyavarcha Ganpati

About Peb fort and Kadyavarcha Ganpati (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});

Peb fort also known as Vikatgad , is one of the fascinating place from Sahyadri hill range. It is fascinating because of the presence of Lord Ganesh idol on its route within Matheran hill range. This idol is known as Kadyavarcha Ganpati . Majestic lord Ganesh Idol carved in the stone, Kadyavarcha Ganpati is famous tourist attraction in the hill range of Matheran. The “Kada” is “Edge” in native language of Marathi. It is been carved in the edge of mountain therefore named “ Kadyavarcha Ganpati ”. Same route connects to stunning Peb fort. Height of the Peb fort is 2100 feet . Fort is located 20 km from Karjat, in Raigad district of Maharashtra. This mountain is one of the part of Matheran range (queen of hills). It is ideal weekend gateway for mountain lovers. A trek to Peb fort along with Kadyavarcha Ganpati is one of the best weekend attraction for tourist. Nowadays forest department and locals have started plantation and restoration work at fort.

How to Reach

Panvel and Karjat are nearest town to reach Peb fort and Kadyavarcha Ganpati. This destination can also be reach via road.

Nearest airport to reach here is Mumbai International airport. The distance from airport to Matheran is 45 km. One can take self-drive car or can also option for local transport to reach the base point of the fort.

The cheapest and most convenient way to reach the fort is Train. The nearest railway station to Vikatgad is Neral on central line of Mumbai. From Mumbai one can take local going towards Karjat and get down at Neral station. If you are coming from Pune side then catch local for Karjat station. From Mumbai and Pune train frequency to Karjat is less. Once you alight at station, walk 5 min and catch local taxis going towards Matheran, Peb fort stop is on the way. This stop is also known as Kadyavarcha Ganpati (share taxi may cost around 80-100 INR per person).

Matheran is 42 km from Mumbai and 80 km from Pune. While traveling from Mumbai via Mumbai-Pune old highway take left from Chowk stop towards Karjat. From Pune road is Pune- Kamshet- Khopoli- Karjat. In monsoon driving to Matheran is very scenic and beuatiful.

Peb fort is accessible by following ways.

Fanaswadi is the first base village to start the trek to Peb fort. I had done this trek before from this route. It was bit risky as the trail itself was too slippery and monsoon makes it more pathetic to climb.

Another route was via Matheran. This is more of toy train track route with panoramic view of surrounding mountain. One who wants to explore Kadyavarcha Ganpati,  it is best route to reach.

My Trekking Experience

Coming to my corner of story this lockdown drained away my happiness for about 6 months. It was my first monsoon without trekking and the culprit was corona. One fine day I was just scrolling the news about travel in lockdown and one good news which come up. News was nonetheless than Matheran is now open for tourist. It was soothing news for me, I called up my partner and convinced her for trek. she got ready as she was eager like me and was waiting for opportunity. I started collecting more information about this place and coming Sunday we made plan to visit here as decided.   It was all started on bike and it took almost two and half hours to reach the base point of trek. One has to take left 500 m before Neral towards Matheran, the road passes through ghat area and trail is curvy with steep ascending to drive. One has to be extra careful while driving along with curvy path, one mistake and you are down. If you are well experience driver with ghat side driving then only drive otherwise you have option to park your vehicle at the base and travel through local vehicle on sharing basis.

Matheran is a weekend gateway for people who stays close to Mumbai. While driving to Matheran alight at the stop of Kadyavarcha Ganpati on right side, park your vehicle properly and walk along with track route. There is no sufficient space for parking at this stop. People with four wheeler park vehicles at Matheran stop and then starts trek with another route. Monsoon here welcomes tourist with great view dipped in the fog. This is one of the easy route to trek. The drive through Matheran ghat is superb with water stream coming across the mountain. The walk through track is fascinating, the route is narrow with valley on right side. There are two waterfalls on route where one can get engaged in clicking photos. In monsoon toy train for Matheran remains close due to the risk of land slide.

One has to walk 4 km along with the track. The trek is easy but you need well endurance level. After walking for 1 hour there is marking of Peb fort and   Kadyavarcha Ganpati with the small entrance gate on right side. Though the gate is in ruined condition, it is attractive. This terrain of Matheran has its own splendor. Shimmering waterfalls, green mountains, muddy trail and hide n seek clouds are the peculiarity of this place. There is number denoted as 55 at bottom of the track side where you have to take right towards your destination Kadyavarcha Ganpati and Peb fort . This is one of the easy route due to its flat walking.

One can take break and get engaged clicking panoramic view of Matheran. Treks continuous with little descending. Steep descending through shrubs will take you towards your destination. Be careful here while descending, the trail is narrow and bit risky too. Moving further there is diversion with narrow trail denoting left towards Ganesh Idol ( Kadyavarcha Ganpati ) and right for Peb fort . The distance towards Ganesh idol (Kadyavarcha Ganpati) is hardly 10 min walk. Statue of Lord Ganesh is carved on the edge of mountain along with small temple. One can spend few minutes here with Ganpati Bappa and then further short trek towards Peb fort. The route continues with narrow trail with shrubs on both side. Ascending through muddy trail will take you to the entrance of the fort. From Ganesh Idol the ideal distance towards summit point is one hour.

There are two gates on the entrance of the fort. This gates are ruined in past time, only some part has remain. Moving ahead one has to cross iron ladder path . Be careful while crossing ladder, one person at a time is thumb rule. There are water cisterns and ruins of the building on the fort. The top of the fort is narrow and small temple at summit which is built recently. Lord Datta’s Paduka idol is constructed at the center. There is lone bastion in the southern region of the fort. From top panoramic view of Matheran range looks so mesmerizing. Best of the view comes after hardest climb, this is so true. The trek is so easy and beginners are always welcome. At some part extra care needs to be taken with proper precaution.

Kadyavarcha Ganpati- Matheran

Best time to visit peb fort and kadyavarcha ganpati.

Any season is preferable to visit this charming place as this is a hill side terrain.

During monsoon the surrounding area of the fort is filled with lush greeneries along with glisten waterfalls. Routes are dipped in the fog. If one doesn’t mind to be wet throughout the day then monsoon is ideal season to be here. At some point route may be slippery, extra care needs to be taken while trekking in monsoon. If you are visiting here in this season then better to take toy train route due to better connectivity and less risk.

Winter here makes pleasant climate for trekking lovers. This is best time to visit for camping. As this is a hill station, temperature here ranges in between 15 to 20 degree. One can pitch own tent at summit point of Peb fort.

Summer is not convinced for trekkers due to its humid temperature. You can hardly see any tourist coming for trekking at Peb fort.

Other Attractions to Visit near Peb Fort

Louisa point - Louisa point offers a picturesque view of the historic Vishalgad and Prabalgad fort. Sunset and sunrise are astonishing from this point. The distance from Peb fort is hardly 5 km.

One tree hill point - This is another winsome point for trekking lover. The valley of Matheran is surrounded to this point. One can also reach here directly from base point.

Toy Train -Yes, toy train that connects Matheran from Neral. It covers total distance of 20 km from base to top. It offers panoramic views of Matheran mountain.

Stay and Food option

Being a fort area there is no hotels or resorts near to it. One can easily travel further 5 km and reach Matheran for stay. Hotels and resorts available in reasonable cost. There is some space at the summit point of Peb fort where one can pitch own tent and stay. Temple at summit can offer stay for 3 to 4 person.

One has to carry own food while trekking. Hotels are available at Matheran. There are variety of food dishes from North to South that offers delicious taste. If you are trekking from Fanaswadi village then request any villagers to cook some food. They may take some nominal charges for extra delicious food.

The trains and stations of the Moscow Metro

2 Comments · Posted by Alex Smirnov in Cities , Travel , Video

The Moscow Metro is the third most intensive subway system in the world after Tokyo and Seoul subways. The first line was opened on May 15, 1935. Since 1955, the metro has the name of V.I. Lenin.

The system consists of 12 lines with a total length of 305.7 km. Forty four stations are recognized cultural heritage. The largest passenger traffic is in rush hours from 8:00 to 9:00 and from 18:00 to 19:00.

Cellular communication is available on most of the stations of the Moscow Metro. In March 2012, a free Wi-Fi appeared in the Circle Line train. The Moscow Metro is open to passengers from 5:20 to 01:00. The average interval between trains is 2.5 minutes.

The fare is paid by using contactless tickets and contactless smart cards, the passes to the stations are controlled by automatic turnstiles. Ticket offices and ticket vending machines can be found in station vestibules.

WGS 84 coordinate reference system is the latest revision of the World Geodetic System, which is used in mapping and navigation, including GPS satellite navigation system (the Global Positioning System).

Geographic coordinates (latitude and longitude) define a position on the Earth’s surface. Coordinates are angular units. The canonical form of latitude and longitude representation uses degrees (°), minutes (′), and seconds (″). GPS systems widely use coordinates in degrees and decimal minutes, or in decimal degrees.

Latitude varies from −90° to 90°. The latitude of the Equator is 0°; the latitude of the South Pole is −90°; the latitude of the North Pole is 90°. Positive latitude values correspond to the geographic locations north of the Equator (abbrev. N). Negative latitude values correspond to the geographic locations south of the Equator (abbrev. S).

Longitude is counted from the prime meridian ( IERS Reference Meridian for WGS 84) and varies from −180° to 180°. Positive longitude values correspond to the geographic locations east of the prime meridian (abbrev. E). Negative longitude values correspond to the geographic locations west of the prime meridian (abbrev. W).

UTM or Universal Transverse Mercator coordinate system divides the Earth’s surface into 60 longitudinal zones. The coordinates of a location within each zone are defined as a planar coordinate pair related to the intersection of the equator and the zone’s central meridian, and measured in meters.

Elevation above sea level is a measure of a geographic location’s height. We are using the global digital elevation model GTOPO30 .
