CANNONS alternate between flashes of gauzy introspection, glitter-drenched dancefloor ecstasy, and gritty sensuality. The Los Angeles trio—Michelle Joy [vocals], Ryan Clapham [lead guitar], and Paul Davis [drums keys]—elevate alternative / electro-pop to a neon stratosphere with nocturnal production and a visual sensibility equally suited to Studio 54 or summer festival season. The band has honed this signature style over the course albums, Night Drive [2017], Shadows [2019], and Fever Dream [2022]. Along the way, “Fire For You” reached RIAA gold status, generated nearly a quarter-of-a-billion streams, topped Alternative Radio, and landed massive syncs on the likes of NETFLIX’s Never Have I Ever, American Horror Story, and more.

CANNONS earned critical acclaim from The Hollywood Reporter, Billboard, FLAUNT, and Consequence of Sound while YouTube touted them among 2021’s “Artists on the Rise.” Emerging as a live force, they’ve headlined countless packed shows in addition to lighting up festivals.

Come blow your horn: Alison Balsom performing with the LA Philharmonic.

Alison Balsom: ‘This is the most important piece written for the trumpet in 200 years’

From elephant blasts to spiritual jazz, Wynton Marsalis’s concerto is a history of the world in trumpet form. As she prepares to give the UK premiere, Balsom describes the thrill of playing it

When I tell people I’m a trumpet soloist, there are three kinds of response I usually get: “Wow, what a great job!”, “Isn’t that unusual for a woman?” And “That’s jazz, right?”

And it is a great job, the best in the world, if not always the easiest when you consider you have to master hundreds of the tiniest muscles around your mouth, perfectly align your breath control and musical goals, and hold your nerve as you walk out on to the stage to perform with both precision and flair, even on the day you’ve broken your toe or your toddler is sick. Everyone knows if a trumpeter is having an off day (perhaps the tiny lip muscles – the embouchure – are bruised from the day before, or not quite feeling under control or strong enough), and a soloist is only as good as their last concert. But what a thrill it is to do this high wire act for decades.

Historically, it has been more unusual for women to play brass instruments, due to old-fashioned gender stereotypes. The trumpet is physically demanding, so it used to fall into a type of macho-sporting category of instruments. But these days mastering the trumpet is much more understood to be like the intense demands required of a ballet dancer. Extreme strength and flawless technique are essential, but that’s really just the beginning. If you can’t navigate through the mindset of “loud, fast, high” to reach your expressive and authentic self, it’s a lot of wasted effort to play this confounding piece of plumbing.

‘Marsalis loves the trumpet. He knows how to explore its every characteristic.’ Wynton Marsalis performing with Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra in February 2022.

But it’s the jazz question that is interesting to me right now, as I prepare to perform Wynton Marsalis ’s new trumpet concerto with the London Symphony Orchestra. Jazz seems to be the natural home for the trumpet sound in most people’s minds. But the sound of the trumpet is everywhere when you start to listen for it. It’s all over your favourite film soundtracks; it punctuates your favourite Stevie Wonder track; it fanfares every big occasion across all major religions, and has done dating back to before Tutankhamun. It’s the sound of Christmas carols in your local community (OK that’s the cornet but let’s not split hairs); it’s Miles Davis in every cool setting you can think of. And we’re not just talking about western culture here: the trumpet or an equivalent instrument is to be found in most major cultures in the world. But I believe the emergence and explosion of jazz in the last century is one of the pinnacles of human achievement.

I have spent my life devoted to classical music, but it was Dizzy Gillespie who inspired me to start playing the trumpet when I was seven. And is there a more ideal personification of the sophistication, the uncompromising intellectual rigour, the swagger or the seductive power of jazz than Wynton Marsalis? Surely the foremost living champion of jazz, he is also a prolific composer of music for symphony orchestra. His jazz opera Blood on the Fields won him the 1997 Pulitzer prize, and he wrote his acclaimed violin concerto in 2015 for Nicola Benedetti – for which she won a Grammy.

Balsom gives the world premiere performance of the Marsalis concerto with the Swedish Radio Orchestra in February.

Now, finally, he has written a concerto for his own instrument, and I believe it to be the most important and impactful piece written for the trumpet in the 200 or so years since Hummel’s Concerto emerged from the Austro-Hungarian empire.

Marsalis loves the trumpet. He knows how to explore every characteristic it possesses in a way no one ever has before. His piece shows the many characters the trumpet can inhabit, and the boundaries it joyfully disregards. It is a huge physical and mental challenge and includes every possible technical difficulty, but it is written and orchestrated so well, and with a musical point behind every idea, that it’s a pleasure to play from start to finish.

Alison Balsom with her husband, director Sam Mendes in October 2022.

The work opens with the most prehistoric horn sound imaginable – the calls of a wild elephant – which is the first time I have been required to impersonate an animal! It travels through the ancient and traditional with fanfares and ceremonial passages, as well as the highly romantic instrumental singing first introduced by Louis Armstrong. Then there’s jazz and the blues; plus Mexican flaring trumpet – a piercing metallic sound that reminds me of Uma Thurman’s character punching her way out of a shallow grave in Quentin Tarantino’s Kill Bill . There are swathes of mid 20th-century Aaron Copland -esque sounds; the music of the New Orleans church; all the trumpet mutes you can think of including Armstrong’s beloved wa-wa; the 19th-century Paris Conservatoire tradition, sounding elegant, flowery, flutelike in its delicate dexterity; and finally a virtuosic tour de force moto perpetuo : an unrestrained, relentless and accelerating charge to the end.

This epic new addition to the contemporary classical canon, soon to be found in trumpet cases across the world, is in six movements, and 35 minutes in total. That’s a long time for the solo trumpet due to the physical stamina needed – not least for those aforementioned lip muscles – but it truly flies by as a short history of the world told through the instrument. And if you were to ask me any time over the next few weeks what it’s like to be a solo trumpeter, I’d struggle to contain my excitement about this historic moment for my instrument, and tell you that it’s the easiest “job” on the planet, once someone writes the right script.

Tee times have been announced for the opening two rounds of the 88th Masters Tournament, which begins Thursday at Augusta National Golf Club.

Tiger Woods is scheduled to tee off at 1:24 p.m. ET on Thursday alongside Jason Day and Max Homa . Woods is making his 26th Masters start. It is his second PGA TOUR start of the season. He withdrew during the second round of The Genesis Invitational in February. The five-time Masters champion can set the tournament’s consecutive cuts made record this week. Woods currently holds the record at 23 consecutive cuts with Gary Player and Fred Couples.

Scottie Scheffler is attempting to win his second green jacket in three years. The world No. 1 has won two of his last three PGA TOUR starts, including THE PLAYERS Championship. Scheffler will tee off at 10:42 a.m. ET Thursday, 1:48 p.m. Friday, with Rory McIlroy and Xander Schauffele . McIlroy is making his 16th appearance at the Masters. It will be his 10th attempt at completing the career grand slam.

Other notable groups include …

  • Patrick Cantlay, Min Woo Lee, Rickie Fowler (10:06 a.m./1:12 p.m.): It’s an interesting group of players, each searching for their first major championship, but in different stages of their career. Lee is the new face, the up-and-comer hoping to capture a breakthrough victory. Cantlay is undoubtedly in the prime of his career, looking for a major to cement his legacy. Fowler returns to the Masters for the first time in four years and hopes to turn back the clock.
  • Hideki Matsuyama, Will Zalatoris, Justin Thomas (10:18 a.m./1:24 p.m.): A trio of sweet-swing premium ball-strikers at Augusta National? Sign us up. Matsuyama and Zalatoris have found their form in 2024 after struggling with injuries a year ago. Thomas is working his way back from poor form in 2023, too. The redemption arc is strong in this group.
  • Jon Rahm, Matt Fitzpatrick, Nick Dunlap (10:30 a.m./1:36 pm.): The defending champion Rahm will line up alongside U.S. Open winner Fitzpatrick and star rookie Dunlap.
  • Wyndham Clark, Viktor Hovland, Cameron Smith (10:54 a.m./2:00 p.m.): Clark, the reigning U.S. Open champion, is making his Masters debut and he will do so with a marquee group. Hovland finished tied for seventh at the Masters last year, a career-best. Smith has three top 10s in his last four appearances
  • Jordan Spieth, Ludvig Åberg, Sahith Theegala (1:48 a.m/10:42 a.m.): Three top-20 players with a legitimate chance to win the green jacket. Jordan Spieth was the young phenom when he made his Masters debut a decade ago. Now he’s paired with two blooming stars on the PGA TOUR.

Already planning to see the next solar eclipse in 2026? What travelers need to know.

Umbraphiles feeling the post-eclipse blues should start checking the expiration date on their passports.

The next total solar eclipse is set to happen on Aug. 12, 2026 over Greenland, Iceland, Spain, Russia and a small part of Portugal, according to NASA .

In North America, only a partial eclipse will be visible, so if April’s event made you an eclipse chaser and you want to see totality, you’ll need to head overseas.

Here’s what you’ll need to know before packing your bags.

Do you need a passport or visa for the best destination?

The path of totality for the 2026 eclipse mostly goes through places Americans can travel visa-free with their passport, so long as they’re planning to stay for less than 90 days.

Spain, Portugal, Iceland and Greenland all allow visa-free tourist travel for U.S. passport holders.

Spain, Portugal and Iceland are also members of the Schengen Area, which allows for visa-free travel in much of Europe, meaning if you decide to make a multi-country trip out of your eclipse adventure, you won’t need to clear customs if you’re coming from much of the rest of Europe, either.

One major change for travelers to Europe from the U.S., however, is that electronic preauthorization will become a requirement beginning in mid-2025. The European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) requirement will apply to all four open countries in the path of totality.

Depending on the state of the Ukraine war, travel to Russia may or may not be an option for most Americans by 2026, so it’s unclear what the paperwork requirements will be by then.

Is it better to see it from the beach?

Beaches can be a great place to see the eclipse because there are few natural obstacles blocking observers’ views of the sky. The 2026 path of totality passes over beaches on Spain’s northern and southeastern coasts, as well as over islands in the Mediterranean Sea including Mallorca, Menorca and Ibiza. The eclipse will also pass over coastal areas in Greenland and Iceland, according to the National Solar Observatory .

Cruising Altitude: What it was like to see the eclipse from a plane

Will there be eclipse cruises or flights?

Almost certainly, although most operators have not announced specific plans yet.

Cruise lines will also offer more viewing opportunities. Princess Cruises “has created a bespoke itinerary aboard Sky Princess to position the ship near Spain on that date,” according to a spokesperson for the line. The cruise will open for bookings on Princess’s website on May 23.

Cunard Line has sailings on its Queen Mary 2 , Queen Victoria and Queen Anne vessels that will put passengers in prime spots to watch .

'The ship can move': Why you should watch next solar eclipses from a cruise ship

Holland America Line is also planning multiple sailings around the event, though details are still to be announced. “Guests have reacted positively to our 2024 eclipse cruises and with the next full eclipse in 2026 we plan to have three sailings in Europe that will align with the path of the eclipse,” Paul Grigsby, the line's Vice President of Deployment & Itinerary Planning, previously told USA TODAY in an email.

What to know about Schengen zone, Europe’s ‘border-free’ travel system

Schengen countries allow international travelers to move freely across borders without additional passport checks.

cannons europe tour

Europe’s “border-free” Schengen zone has added travel protections for two more countries, making it easier for more people to explore the southeastern region of the continent.

Romania and Bulgaria partially joined the Schengen area on Sunday, which means visitors who arrive by air or sea from other countries in the zone can cross their borders without an ID check. Land borders will remain subject to ID checks because of opposition led by Austria, which has long cited irregular migration as a concern when it comes to welcoming the two Eastern European states into the Schengen agreement. The move comes more than a decade after Romania and Bulgaria joined the European Union.

The European Commission had previously recommended that Bulgaria and Romania be admitted to join the Schengen zone, starting in 2011 and most recently in 2023. A combination of internal problems in the two countries and opposition from other countries citing irregular migration concerns — especially after the so-called “migrant crisis” of 2015 — meant they were caught in “Schengen purgatory” until now, according to Leon Züllig, a researcher and Schengen expert at Germany’s Justus Liebig University Giessen.

Jack Smith argues "not a single" Trump official has claimed he declared any records personal

By Robert Legare

Updated on: April 3, 2024 / 9:17 AM EDT / CBS News

Washington — Special counsel Jack Smith urged a federal judge to keep a presidential recordkeeping law out of instructions that would be provided to the jury in the classified documents case against former President Donald Trump , according to court documents filed by Smith's team late Tuesday. Prosecutors warned that including the law in the instructions risked jeopardizing the proceedings, and signaled they would appeal the judge's decision if she ruled against them.

Last month, U.S. District Court Judge Aileen Cannon , who is overseeing the case in Florida, asked Smith's and Trump's legal teams to file jury instructions based on two hypothetical scenarios: in one, the president has the authority under the Presidential Records Act (PRA) to categorize any records as personal. Under this scenario, Cannon wrote that "neither a court nor a jury" would have the ability to review the decision, a finding that could nullify much of the special counsel's case against Trump.

In the other, the jury would be able to examine a record that had been retained by a former president and make a finding that it was either "personal or presidential," under the PRA. Under this scenario, it is possible jurors could find that some official documents were mishandled.

Federal prosecutors rejected both proposals and wrote Tuesday that the PRA — a 1978 law that manages the maintenance of White House documents produced during each presidency — "should not play any role at trial at all," arguing that Trump's alleged mishandling of classified records occurred after his presidency ended.

Trump and Smith filed separate proposals for jury instructions in the case Tuesday, although a trial date has yet to be set.

Prosecutors said Tuesday that both of Cannon's hypothetical scenarios "rest on an unstated and fundamentally flawed legal premise." Any jury instructions that include the PRA risked "distort[ing] the trial," they said.

Instead, the special counsel suggested jurors should only have to determine three elements of the case that amount to whether Trump willfully retained national defense information without the authorization of the federal government.

Smith's team requested that if the judge opts to include language concerning the PRA, she affords them ample time to appeal the matter to higher courts ahead of trial.

The former president's legal team took the opposite view, writing Cannon "correctly stated the law" when she suggested the jury instruction that would have granted Trump much broader power under the PRA.

"If this case is presented to a jury—which it should not be—the jury would be forced to resolve factual issues relating to not only PRA categorizations but also documents' alleged classification status," Trump's defense team argued in their filing .

In their own proposed jury instructions , Trump's legal team suggested Cannon tell jurors that Trump was authorized to access the classified records during his presidency and that certain precedents allow for former presidents to access certain documents.

The special counsel charged Trump in a 40-count indictment that includes 32 alleged violations of a national security law that makes it illegal to mishandle national defense information. The former president is also accused of engaging in an obstruction scheme as part of an alleged effort to thwart federal investigators as they probed his retention of documents with classified markings. The FBI ultimately recovered over 300 sensitive government records from Trump's Mar-a-Lago residence that prosecutors accused him of illegally keeping.

Trump pleaded not guilty to all counts and has denied any wrongdoing.

Tuesday's late-night filing from the special counsel contended that the question of presidential versus private records under the PRA is not a question for a jury because it doesn't apply to Trump's alleged conduct. Instead, prosecutors said this was a matter of law that should be left up to the judge.

Trump's legal team has filed a number of motions to dismiss the case against him, including one on the grounds that the PRA granted Trump "unreviewable discretion" over classified records.

"President Trump was still the President of the United States when, for example, many of the documents at issue were packed (presumably by the GSA), transported, and delivered to Mar-A-Lago," they wrote in a February court filing.

Attorneys for the former president also argued that the PRA "precludes judicial review" over a president's recordkeeping, contending that the court has no jurisdiction in the matter, language that was reflected in Cannon's order asking for input on the proposed jury instructions.

Smith's team, however, pushed back in responding court filings, writing that the more than 300 documents with classified markings recovered from Trump "are indisputably presidential, not personal."

"Trump was not authorized to possess classified records at all," prosecutors said.

The federal probe into Trump's handling of classified records followed a months-long effort by federal officials to collect what they said were missing documents. Investigators ultimately executed a search warrant at his Florida residence and club, Mar-a-Lago, in August of 2022, after the former president allegedly failed to fully respond to a grand jury subpoena.

In Tuesday's filing, Smith's team again pushed back, alleging that Trump's use of the PRA — namely the claim that he had the power to declare certain government documents as personal in nature — was "invented" as a "fictional" defense for his alleged conduct only after the federal probe was underway. The special counsel said neither communications with his defense team throughout the investigation nor witness testimony backs up Trump's claims.

Prosecutors revealed that during its grand jury investigation, the special counsel's office interviewed individuals close to the former president, including his chiefs of staff and top White House lawyers.

"Not a single one had heard Trump say that he was designating records as personal or that, at the time he caused the transfer of boxes to Mar-a-Lago, he believed that his removal of records amounted to designating them as personal under the PRA," according to the special counsel. "To the contrary, every witness who was asked this question had never heard such a thing."

In response to Cannon's order, however, Trump's lawyers reiterated their contention that the former president was shielded from prosecution under the PRA.

"There is no basis for the Special Counsel's Office, this Court, or a jury to second-guess President Trump's document-specific PRA categorizations."

Cannon has yet to rule on any of Trump's motions to dismiss the indictment, and the former president's legal team urged her again on Tuesday to rule in his favor. Two of the former president's aides, Walt Nauta and Carlos de Oliveira, also face charges in the case and filed their own motions, which also remain unresolved. Nauta and de Oliveira pleaded not guilty to allegations that they worked with the former president to obstruct the federal probe.

The judge has yet to set a trial date in the case — originally scheduled for late May — and has not issued any order related to a request from Smith that she reconsider a ruling tied to protected witness names. She held a hearing on those two issues on March 1.

Trump originally argued that a trial should not go forward before the fall election, but conceded that August would be feasible, should the judge decide to proceed. The special counsel pushed for the trial to begin in July, a proposal that seems less likely to be adopted, since Cannon's docket still contains several unresolved motions.

Take a tour of Europe at Staunton Music Festival's SpringFest concert

cannons europe tour

STAUNTON — Take a tour of Europe while never leaving Staunton at SpringFest: Baroque Journeys, a Staunton Music Festival weekend concert April 12-14.

Now in its third year, SpringFest offers a three-day celebration of Baroque music, spanning Europe from West to East and culminating with Handel's Italian oratorio  La Resurrezione . All concerts feature period instrument performers. Programs include music for voices, orchestra, and chamber ensembles and feature historical keyboards.

Through this music, and this particular program with its place based music, audiences will be transported to Europe and back in time, too. A new way to travel, if you will. These are masterpieces that have stood the test of time. Vivaldi's "Four Seasons" on Saturday night is known to classical music lovers as a crowd pleaser.

Because Staunton Music Festival plays all music composed prior to 1850 on instruments of that era, via “historic performance,” audiences will actually hear it the way that audiences would have heard it back then, when the composer wrote it. That’s unusual, and it happens here in Staunton.

As opposed to the larger summer festival, SpringFest is all early music — all Baroque. The summer festival's music spans more than 600 years into the present day. Every concert this weekend will be performed on period instruments, by artists trained in historic performance. To learn more, visit: https://www.stauntonmusicfestival.org/period-instruments

Carsten Schmidt, Staunton Music Festival's artistic director, will take audiences on a tour of the continent over the course of the weekend's performances. The weekend will culminate with Handel's Italian oratorio La Resurrezione .

Fantasy Insight: As it stands, Scottie Scheffler is the favourite for players of our Fantasy Game this week , featuring in 88% of teams. Other popular players include defending champion Jon Rahm (67%) and four-time Major winner Rory McIlroy (64%).

Viktor Hovland, who is yet to miss a cut at Augusta National in his first four appearances, is the fourth most picked player, featuring in 44% of Fantasy teams.

FDPWT_The-Masters_Ones-to-Watch_16x9 (1)

Here, we pick out three players in action this week who are worth considering for your Fantasy team selections.

Favourite - Scottie Scheffler

Quite simply he is the best player in the world. Twice a winner already this year, including at The Players Championship last month, and with his worst finish this season a tie for 17th, it would be no surprise if he claimed his second Green Jacket, two years after his first.

The American is also one of just three players (alongside Hideki Matsuyama and Shane Lowry) to have finished in the top 25 at each of the last four Masters.

Statistically the strongest across a number of categories on the PGA TOUR, the 27-year-old will be a tough act to beat if he has a good week on the greens.

Scheffler-2128083227

Form horse - Ludvig Åberg

You begin to run out of superlatives for the Swede. Less than a year on from turning professional, the young Swede is preparing for his first Major Championship appearance.

Labelled a "generational talent" by Team Europe Captain Luke Donald ahead of his Ryder Cup debut last September, Åberg arrives at Augusta National in fine form - he has three top 10s in his last six PGA TOUR starts and has finished no worse than a tie for 25th during that stretch.

A winner on both sides of the Atlantic, and now inside the world's top 10, could he become the first player since Fuzzy Zoeller in 1979 to win on his Masters debut? He has certainly proven himself capable of rising to the biggest challenges before.

Ludvig Åberg

Wild card - Justin Rose

The former World Number One is not to be discounted easily.

While his results since contesting the Ryder Cup might not inspire much confidence, it is hard to find others who are yet to win the Masters with a more enviable record at Augusta National.

In his 18 appearances to date, he has six top-10s, twice finishing runner-up. In that time, he has also made the cut on 16 occasions, so someone who historically gives himself a shot at the title heading into the final 36 holes.

Justin Rose-1781807741

Looking back – Hero Indian Open

Keita Nakajima became the second Japanese to win on the DP World Tour this season at the DLF Golf & Country Club as he picked up 232 Fantasy player points, rewarding the near 12% of the game's users who had him in their team.
