The tiger shark responsible for mauling a Russian tourist to death has been killed.

Vladimir Popov, 23, was attacked in front of stunned tourists while he was swimming at one of Egypt's Red Sea resorts in the city of Hurghada on Thursday.

Distressing footage circulating on social media showed the man screaming for his father as he is pulled underwater by the 10 foot shark several times.

Popov could be heard crying out for "papa" as he tried to swim away.

The shark circled and attacked the Russian several times, with his legs lifting above the surface at one point while others tell him to swim to shore.

Witnesses claimed the tiger shark toyed with his body for two hours.

Locals later drove boats out to the sea and followed and then captured in a net what they believed was the animal that killed Popov.

The shark, which had one hook attached to its nostril, appeared to be alive as it was dumped onto the beach and surrounded by onlookers.

One man holding a metal pole could be seen in a social media clip repeatedly beating the shark over the head and trying to pry open its mouth.

Egypt's Environment Ministry confirmed the tiger shark had been caught and would be examined in a laboratory to investigate what may have triggered the rare attack.

Researchers will investigate whether it was responsible for other incidents.

Popov's father Yury told local Egyptian media the pair went to the beach to "relax".

"My son was attacked by a shark. It all happened in seconds," he said.

"This meat grinder... it is just some kind of evil fate."

A Russian man has died after being mauled by a tiger shark off one of Egypt’s Red Sea resorts, with disturbing video taken from the beach appearing to show him screaming “papa” as the attack unfolded.

The 23-year-old Russian national had gone swimming in the waters off his resort near the city of Hurghada when a shark emerged underwater and grabbed him.

The attack forced the Egyptian authorities to close off a 74-kilometre (46-mile) stretch of the coastline, announcing it will remain off limits until Sunday.

Officials from the Russian Consulate in Hurghada identified the man as a Russian citizen. He has been name locally as Vladimir Popov.

His dad has since spoken of watching the attack from the shore.

“We went to the beach to relax,” Mr Popov, originally from Russia, told the 112 media outlet. “My son was attacked by a shark, it all happened in seconds.”

“What kind of help can you give? This meat grinder happened in 20 seconds, he was just dragged under the water.”

He added: “This is an absolutely ridiculous coincidence, because it is a safe beach. There are ships and yachts around. It’s never happened there. They usually attack on wild beaches. It’s just some kind of evil fate.”

A nearly minute-long video appearing to be of the brutal shark attack shows the man being suddenly pulled down into the water, only for him to resurface and desperately fight off the shark when suddenly the water around him goes red.

He also screams out “papa” and cries out loudly as the shark repeatedly circles and comes back in to attack. Later in the video a witness is heard saying “it is eating his remains now” as a small ship sails in the distance.

The environment ministry in Egypt later said it had caught the shark and was examining it in a laboratory to try to determine the reasons for the rare attack.

Images shared on social media showed the body of the bloodied shark lying on a sheet on land.

A young Russian man was mauled to death by a shark off one of Egypt's Red Sea resorts, according to Egyptian and Russian authorities.

The man, named as Vladimir Popov by Russian media, died after being attacked by a tiger shark in the waters near the city of Hurghada, Egypt's environment ministry said.

Footage circulating online, purportedly of the attack, shows a man thrashing about in the water before being repeatedly attacked by a shark circling him and then dragged under.

The ministry later said the shark had been caught and was being examined in a laboratory to try to determine the reasons for the rare attack.

A 46-mile (74km) stretch of the coastline was closed off by authorities, who announced it would remain off-limits until Sunday.

The man's father, Yury Popov, was forced to watch the attack helplessly from the shore as the predator circled the 23-year-old and eventually dragged him under the water.

Speaking to the 112 media outlet following his son's death, Mr Popov said: "We went to the beach to relax. My son was attacked by a shark, it all happened in seconds."

Mr Popov described the attack as an "absolutely ridiculous coincidence" because the beach is known to be safe.

"There are ships and yachts around. It's never happened there. They usually attack on wild beaches. It's just some kind of evil fate," he said.

Other videos being shared online show the tiger shark being caught alive and dragged ashore by a boat following the attack, before being clubbed to death.

It is considered rare for shark attacks to take place in the coastal areas of the Red Sea.

However, there were two fatal incidents of shark attacks last year in Hurghada within a few days of each other, resulting in the deaths of Austrian and Romanian tourists.

Egypt's renowned beach destinations in the Red Sea, such as Hurghada and Sharm El-Sheikh, are frequently visited by European tourists. These destinations are particularly popular among divers who are drawn by the vibrant sea life visible in the steep drop-offs of coral reefs located just offshore.

In recent times, Egypt has been making concerted efforts to revive its tourism industry, which has suffered due to political instability, the COVID pandemic, and the conflict in Ukraine.

Tiger sharks are a notable species found in both tropical and temperate waters. They are known for being among the sharks that often attack humans without provocation, as per the records of the International Shark Attack File.

Other beachgoers were seen frantically running out of the water when the attack happened.

An eyewitness said: ‘Children swim [in the area where the   shark attacked] very often – there were children’s slides.

‘All this happened not far from a descent into the sea, next to the ladder, used by everyone who went into the water. At one point, the shark appeared, and immediately bit this man.

The man, believed to be Vladimir Popov, was killed by a tiger shark in the waters when he was out on a swim on Thursday. His distraught girlfriend managed to escape, The Daily Mail reported.

His father watched the fatal attack in horror, which was also filmed from the shore, the report said. He can be heard screaming 'Papa' as some of the water turns red. His father stood helpless as his son fought for his life, desperately calling out for help.

Visuals from the spot show a huge splash and commotion in the water as the man is dragged under the water by the tiger shark. The man can be seen desperately trying to swim towards the shore but appears to be attacked by the shark while still in deeper waters, the video shows.

'HAPPENED IN A SECOND'

Eyewitnesses recalled the harrowing scene and revealed how the hotel staff instantly sounded the alarm and urged swimmers to vacate the water.

“It happened in a second. Rescuers reacted very quickly. For some reason, I immediately felt that it was a shark. I immediately jumped up and started shouting: ‘Sharks, sharks! Save yourself!’ Nobody understood yet,” a witness told Russian station REN-TV.

“It’s a terrible thing, the remains of this guy are over there. I’m shaking. Right in front of my eyes, the shark ate that guy. I think I need a drink. I feel really bad,” a woman told the Telegram channel Baza.

Some onlookers, including a lifeguard from a nearby hotel, rushed to the tourist's rescue but in vain, reports said.

"Oh my god, oh my god," a woman is heard saying in the background. “It’s eating his remains now,” one witness who filmed the incident can be heard saying.

Confirming that the shark has been caught, Egypt's Environment Ministry said the tiger shark would be examined in a laboratory to investigate.

According to Russian news outlet Baza, the man had moved to the resort with his father only several months ago. Russian tourists were urged to remain vigilant when entering waters and to abide by any swimming bans imposed by authorities.

Shark fatally clubbed on camera as revenge for death of russian tourist.

It was an eye-for-an-eye of the tiger.

Footage captured the moment that beachgoers brutally clubbed a tiger shark to death as revenge for a Russian tourist who was killed during a “meat grinder” shark attack off a popular Egyptian resort.

[Warning: Viewer Discretion Advised]

In the savage footage, a group of boaters is seen lashing a large tiger shark that they caught to the side of their boat.

The clip then cuts to a mob of people surrounding the predatory fish on the shore as a man beats the beached beast — which appears to still be alive — with a metal pole as onlookers yell and cheer.

The clip concludes with the cameraman posing for a selfie as the savage scene unfolds in the background.

The vigilante mob was reportedly attempting to avenge the death of 23-year-old Russian ex-pat Vladimir Popov, who was devoured by a tiger shark in front of horrified beachgoers while swimming in the Red Sea off a seaside resort in Hurghada.

A man beats the beached shark with a metal pole.

Popov’s father Yury said they had “gone to the beach to relax” when all of a sudden, his son “was attacked by a shark,” CEN reported.

An eyewitness said that the attack happened close to shore near a ladder that swimmers use to descend into the sea.

“At one point, the shark appeared, and immediately bit this man,” they said. “Rescuers saw this and began to start the boat. He tried to swim away from the shark, but he couldn’t.”

In the bone-chilling video, Popov can be seen splashing about in the ocean before getting dragged under as horrified onlookers scream for help.

“It’s eating his remains now,” an eyewitness who filmed the incident can be heard saying in the background.

Shark attack victim Vladimir Popov.

According to CEN, the victim had yelled, “Papa….save me” to his father before getting yanked underwater. “This meat grinder happened in 20 seconds, he was just dragged under the water,” recalled the deceased’s distraught father, who witnessed the brutal attack. “What kind of help can you give?”

Bystanders claimed they tried to rescue Popov but to no avail during the horrifying ordeal, which reportedly sent beachgoers running out of the water.

Meanwhile, eyewitnesses claimed the shark toyed with the Russian’s body for two hours after the killing.

Yury said it took a long time to locate his son’s corpse and bring it ashore. After the remains were finally found, “the body was put in a bag and taken to the morgue,” he said.

Fishermen catch the shark.

Thankfully, Popov’s girlfriend, who was reportedly next to him at the time, was rescued, along with two other girls and is reportedly back in Russia.

Separate footage shows one of the rescued women sobbing on the beach moments after the fatal attack as two other women console her.

It’s yet unclear if she was related to Popov. So far, the victim’s father, Yury, is the only family member to make a statement.

Fishermen lash a tiger shark to their boat.

Egyptian authorities have since confirmed they caught the shark responsible, and handed it over to researchers, so they could investigate the cause of its abnormal behavior.

Scientists also aim to determine whether this tiger shark — a species responsible for the second-most attacks on humans after great whites — was also involved in several other incidents in the area.

As of now, it’s unclear if this shark and the one filmed getting clubbed are the same animal.

The corpse of the tiger shark believed to have killed Popov.

Popov’s devastated dad deemed the attack “an absolutely ridiculous coincidence.”

“It is such a safe beach,” Yury declared. “There are ships and yachts around. It’s never happened there. They usually attack on wild beaches.”

“It is just some kind of evil fate,” added the heartbroken father, who pledged to cremate his son and return the ashes to Russia.

The duo had reportedly been living in Egypt for several months, sparking speculation that Popov had been attempting to avoid being enlisted in the Russia-Ukraine conflict.

While attacks are fortunately rare in Red Sea coastal regions, last year, sharks killed two women — an Austrian and a Romanian — just days apart in another popular tourist spot in Hurghada.

Russian dies in shark attack off Egypt's Red Sea coast

Cairo (AFP) – A Russian man was killed on Thursday when a shark attacked him off the coast of Egypt's Red Sea resort city of Hurghada, authorities said.

Issued on: 08/06/2023 - 20:54

"An attack by a tiger shark on a beachgoer... led to his death," Egypt's environment ministry posted on Facebook, without providing further details.

Russian media said the victim was a Russian national in his 20s, and video circulated on social media appearing to show the incident.

Russian Consul-General Viktor Voropayev told state-owned TASS news agency that the Egyptian authorities had confirmed to him the death of the Russian national who was born in 1999.

"The victim was not a tourist, but a permanent resident of Egypt," Voropayev told the news agency.

Video footage said to be of the incident was widely circulated on social media in Egypt, showing a person struggling to escape from the shark.

Egypt's environment ministry said a team had captured the shark "to inspect it", saying it had displayed "abnormal behaviour... resulting in the incident".

It said water activities would be suspended for two days starting on Friday, pointing to previous attacks on people by the same type of shark.

The Red Sea is a popular tourist destination, where sharks are common but rarely attack people who swim within authorised areas.

Last July, two women, an Austrian and a Romanian, were killed in a shark attack near Hurghada.

In 2018, a Czech tourist was killed by a shark off a Red Sea beach after a similar attack killed a German tourist in 2015.

In 2010, a spate of five attacks in five days unusually close to the shore of tourist hotspot Sharm el-Sheikh killed one German and injured four other foreign tourists.

A tiger shark believed to have killed a Russian man in the Egyptian Red Sea resort of Hurghada on Thursday has been caught, taxidermised and will be displayed at a museum.

The shark was revealed to be a female carrying pups following an autopsy conducted by scientists from the National Institute of Oceanography and Fisheries.

It is unclear whether it was the same shark that killed the tourist and the seemingly retaliatory hunt has been criticised by experts.

Dr Ashraf Seddik, who was among five scientists from the institute who conducted the autopsy, said the shark was 3.25 metres long, aged eight and weighed about 500kg.

Its entrails have been removed as part of the taxidermy process, which took three hours, the institute said on Tuesday.

The carcass has been treated with salt to extract moisture and stuffed with wood shavings in preparation for display at the institute’s museum in Hurghada.

The attack has raised concerns about tourist safety in the Red Sea and resulted in the closure of a 60km stretch of beaches from the resort of El Gouna to Soma Bay.

A video clip shared widely online showed the shark after it was caught by fishermen guided by local marine experts.

One clip showed a man punching the shark on the deck of a boat.

The Russian consul general in Hurghada said the victim was born in 1999 and was a resident of Egypt.

In July last year two women, an Austrian and a Romanian, were killed in separate shark attacks south of Hurghada. In 2020, a Ukrainian boy lost an arm and a local tour guide a leg in shark attacks. A Czech tourist was killed by a shark off a Red Sea beach in 2018, three years after a German tourist died in an attack.

In 2010, a spate of shark attacks killed one European tourist and maimed several others in Sharm El Sheikh on the southern tip of the Sinai Peninsula, across the Red Sea from Hurghada.

A tiger shark killed Vladimir Popov , a 23-year-old Russian man, on a beach in Hurghada, Egypt , in the Red Sea on Thursday. The chilling images have been shared around the world.

His father, Yury Popov, could do nothing to save his son, who endured a gruelling and fateful two hours as the animal lashed out at him.

The shark was finally caught by a local boat and washed ashore. It was then that Yury Popov beat the three-metre shark to death. The father was devastated and explained to the country's media that it all happened in just 20 seconds.

"It's a cruel fate," he lamented. In addition to Vladimir, another woman was also in the water, but was eventually able to avoid the attack unharmed. The images of the tragedy were recorded by some nearby boats that could do nothing for the boy's life.

The shocking video of the young man beating eaten

In the video you can see the man swimming near the shore of Dream Beach Sheraton , when suddenly he is surprised by the animal that begins to attack him.

The boy starts to move around, with no fixed direction, when the fin of a large shark can be seen next looming next to him.

The victim is a 23-year-old man who was on holiday with his father, and you can even hear him shouting: "Dad, Dad" until the water turns completely red.

"Oh my God!" another tourist can be heard shouting.

Once the man did not move, the shark appeared again, just as a rescue boat arrived, but it was too late to save his life.

"A Russian citizen died as a result of a shark attack," Russian consul general in Hurghada Viktor Voropayev was quoted as saying by TASS.

The same news source then identified the victim as 'V. Popov'.

What species of shark can be found in the Red Sea?

Reef sharks : they live in coral reefs and can reach almost two meters.

Hammerhead sharks : the top predators in the area.

Shortfin mako : this species was responsible for nine attacks on humans between 1580 and 2022.

Mako sharks : they weigh between 150 and 200 kilograms.

Oceanic whitetip shark : among the least aggressive in the Red Sea.

Tiger sharks : surprisingly fast.

Great white shark : the king of sharks, can be found all over the Mediterranean Sea.

Whale Shark : totally tame, almost whale-like.

Thresher Sharks : they are extremely sensitive to light and sound, so it is recommended not to make frantic or noisy movements.

The body parts of a Russian tourist who was filmed being eaten alive by a shark were recovered from inside the predator’s belly after it was clubbed to death by beachgoers near an Egyptian resort.

Vladimir Popov, 23, was caught on bone-chilling footage being attacked by a tiger shark last week and dragged underwater in Hurghada as he screamed for help, NY Post reports.

The shark was later caught and beachgoers beat it to death on the shore.

The shark has since been dissected by specialists, who confirmed that the animal was the one that ate Mr Popov — after finding his remains in its intestines, local outlet Al Arabiya reported.

Officials said the shark attacked Mr Popov while he was swimming in the Red Sea at a resort beach location in Hurghada.

Mr Popov’s father Yury said the pair had “gone to the beach to relax” when all of a sudden, his son “was attacked by a shark,” CEN reported.

Mr Popov was in the water with his girlfriend, who escaped, while fellow beachgoers said there was little they could do as the shark chomped down on him.

In terrifying video, Mr Popov can be seen splashing about in the ocean before getting dragged under as horrified onlookers scream for help.

According to CEN, the victim had yelled, “Papa … save me!” before getting yanked underwater.

Eyewitnesses also claimed the shark toyed with the Russian’s body for two hours after the killing.

Yury deemed the attack “an absolutely ridiculous coincidence,” adding that he would cremate his son’s remains and return the ashes to Russia.

The attack left many tourists stunned, with beachgoers convening when investigators caught the shark and dragged it ashore.

A vigilante mob was present to brutally club the animal to death.

Video of the scene shows the group horrifically beating the animal, and it concludes with the cameraman even posing for a selfie as the savage scene unfolds in the background.

Officials have yet to reveal if the shark that ate Mr Popov was involved in other reported incidents in the area.

While attacks are fortunately rare in Red Sea coastal regions, last year, sharks killed two women — an Austrian and a Romanian — just days apart in another popular tourist spot in Hurghada.

A couple who brought their dog into a restricted area of the Great Barrier Reef have been given an expensive reminder as to why the act is banned.

A remote Pacific island is attracting supersized sharks. Scientists want to know why.

Off Norfolk Island in the South Pacific, tiger sharks grow an average of two feet longer than those on the Great Barrier Reef. We've only started unraveling the mystery.

The water churned as two tiger sharks tore the cow carcass apart. Slowly, more of the giant predators arrived to the feeding frenzy, until about 20 circled around Charlie Huveneers as he watched from inside a shark cage.

Named for their black stripes, the tiger shark is related to the great white and usually measures about nine feet. But here, in this remote pocket of the South Pacific, the fish routinely—and mysteriously—reach lengths of 15 feet.

On that day, Huveneers and Lauren Meyer , both biologists at Australia’s Flinders University, and Adam Barnett , of James Cook University, were blown away by the size of the sharks.

“This was the most tiger sharks we had ever caught in one day and they were the biggest males and biggest females we had ever seen,” says Meyer, who appears in the Nat Geo SharkFest episode Supersized Sharks .

Over the next few days, the team caught 20 more sharks, which they studied and measured. “It exceeded all of our expectations,” she says.

The scientists were in Norfolk Island to study why the remote island attracts so many tiger sharks, the highest known concentration of the species in the world. Their mission was also crucial for conservation: These ocean mammoths are near threatened with extinction, due mostly to overfishing. (Read about the surprising ways sharks keep oceans healthy.)

A territory of Australia, Norfolk Island is a former penal colony with a long history of cattle ranching. Because there's no good way to dispose of dead livestock without poisoning the groundwater, ranchers often dump the offal directly into the ocean.

At first, the team thought these supersized sharks might be sticking around the island to take advantage of this “drive-through hamburger joint,” as Meyer says.

But what they found was even more mysterious.

A cow carcas in the water atracks a tiger shark that bites into the cow.

Fast food—of the sea

The researchers started digging into the sharks ’ diet to see if the cow carcasses were keeping them around. “You need something special to be able to sustain that many large sharks,” says Huveneers.

Stable isotope analysis —analyzing atoms of various elements to see what the animals were eating—revealed a surprise: Only 10 percent of the sharks’ diet was made up of cow. “That’s a tiny amount compared to what we expected,” says Huveneers.

That made it was clear the fish had another key food source: “This huge population of large tiger sharks will need a lot more to eat than the occasional bit of leftover cow,” says Meyer. (See gorgeous pictures of sharks.)

So, what were they eating? The analysis revealed that the island is more of a chicken restaurant than a burger joint—52 percent of the sharks’ diet was made up of seabirds. As it turns out, “the offal was just a bit of dessert for them,” she says.

Scientists already knew that tiger sharks eat birds , but the researchers were so surprised by the amount in the Norfolk shark diet that they had to double check their data.

A man holds a bird camera that is shaped like a duck.

Rafting seabirds

The wedgetail shearwater flocks to Norfolk Island in the tens of thousands to nest.

At dusk, these seabirds float on the surface of the water in large “rafts,” making them easy prey. “It would be very difficult for the birds to detect a predator coming up from underneath, especially at this time of day,” says Meyer.

Large tiger sharks are rather slow and opportunistic hunters, relying primarily on the element of surprise. “That seabird rafting behavior at dusk is the perfect opportunity for sharks to come up and use their big, flat noses to suction these birds off the surface."

Sophia Emmons , a Ph.D. student at James Cook University and University of South Florida, agrees seabirds are a perfect meal.

Though tiger sharks are "built like they’re going to be the most apex predator—they have the streamlined body shape, incredible jaw strength, and they’re able to bite through turtle shells ... they’re so lazy,” says Emmons, who wasn’t involved in the research. Which has a stronger bite: hammerheads or tiger sharks?

Sometimes known as the “trash cans of the sea,” these scavengers have been found with farm animals, license plates, and even a suit of armor in their stomachs.

With such a plentiful supply of seabirds to snack on, it makes sense to Emmons that Norfolk Island's tiger sharks grow much larger than other populations.

“With a very good food source, whether it's primarily from the cattle or from the seabirds, tiger sharks can expend more energy and put more of that into growth,” she says.

Emmons also wonders if there’s a secondary connection between the cattle and sharks. “Do the cattle bring in fish, the fish bring in birds, and the birds bring in the sharks?” she says.

Huveneers and the team think that’s unlikely, in part because the sharks aren’t staying at Norfolk Island year-round.

People underwater looking for sharks.

Fair-weather friends

In another unexpected development, the team found these tiger sharks only stay near Norfolk Island for five months over the spring and summer. “That’s surprising, considering there could be enough food for them throughout the year,” says Huveneers.

Tagged animals have revealed many of Norfolk Island's tiger sharks migrate 600 miles to New Caledonia, a French territory, in the autumn. But although there was a consistent pattern with sharks migrating between Norfolk Island and New Caledonia, their routes varied wildly. (See the biggest shark discoveries of the past decade.)

“We had some going to Australia, Fiji, Vanuatu, nearly to New Zealand, and Papua New Guinea,” says Huveneers.

Now, the scientists know where these massive sharks are going, they want to figure out why. One theory is that the sharks mate near Norfolk Island and give birth in the waters of New Caledonia, which is in the open ocean, far from many predators.

“Newborn tiger sharks are really quite vulnerable,” says Meyer, “so pups need to be dropped off at the most suitable locations to maximize their chance of survival.”

Searching for a nursery

If Norfolk Island is a breeding ground, female sharks could be fattening up on seabirds before dropping their pups in New Caledonia’s warm tropical waters.

However, none of the ultrasounds the team performed on Norfolk Island sharks revealed pups. Likewise, these females did not bear mating scars.

Though the team did identify one pregnant female in New Caledonia—“we could actually feel pups in the belly,” says Meyer—a nursery remained elusive.

If future research identifies nursery grounds, these areas could be protected—a vital step for protecting the declining species.

For now, the mystery of why these immense sharks are drawn to Norfolk Island and New Caledonia remains unsolved, says Huveneers: “We’re getting closer to the answer, but it’s certainly not a slam dunk.”
