17 Best Things To Do In Grayton Beach, Florida

If a typical beach town is laid-back, Grayton Beach is fully reclining.

Where To Stay

Where to eat, where to shop, things to do.

If a typical beach town is laid-back, Grayton Beach is fully reclining—in a hammock with an ice-cold margarita. Settled into the wild, unkempt land that makes up the surrounding state park, this small town doesn't worry too much about whether you like it. As town squares and pastel cottages sprouted in areas down the road, Grayton Beach kept its shell-speckled, sandy roads, sea-weathered homes, and groovy attitude. There may be a new strip of stores and restaurants, but this tiny coastal village remains old-school. Here's everything you need to do, see, and eat on your next trip to Grayton Beach, Florida.

Hibiscus Coffee & Guesthouse

Grab a coffee at the counter at Hibiscus Coffee & Guesthouse , a little bed-and-breakfast hidden beneath Spanish moss, and head out to a shaded area behind the inn. Nailed to a tree outside is a rustic wooden sign that reads "Backyard of Love." Below it, another sign says, "Hug in...hug out."

Meander through a lush, fairy-worthy tapestry of ivy and narrow pathways forged throughout the B&B's history. Like most things in Grayton Beach, the Backyard of Love is nothing fancy and a little funky—the kind of place where you could imagine a Woodstock revival coming together. That suits a town with the unofficial slogan "Nice dogs, strange people."

WaterColor Inn & Resort

Choose the WaterColor Inn & Resort for resort-style amenities, with 500 acres of pristine, private beaches and rooms overlooking the Gulf. You don't need to pack any bikes or water sports equipment for this trip because the resort offers complimentary bicycles, kayaks, and canoes, and you can even request beach bonfires.

Black Bear Bread Co.

After a morning bike ride, trade dusty pedals for the whitewashed floors of Black Bear Bread Co. Once inside the cozy cottage, you'll be smacked with the pleasant aroma of toasty sourdough and Benton's bacon, mingling in perfect harmony with poached eggs. Warm, flaky croissants and cinnamon rolls tempt you as you wait to order at the counter. Enjoy a steaming plate of weekend-only biscuits and gravy .

Named Bar Room , located next to Black Bear Bread Co., is a perfect place to end your evening in the area where your day began. You can close out your day with oysters, charcuterie, seasonal appetizers, and a selection of natural wines and local craft beer.

The Red Bar

The Red Bar is a scarlet-lit, bohemian abnormality on the impeccably polished and planned Highway 30A. The Grayton Beach mainstay blends a '70s Parisian beatnik bistro with a beach vagabond vibe, and Southerners come for the perfectly blackened grouper and stick around for the house margaritas and live music by The Red Bar Jazz Band.

Chanticleer Eatery

This laid-back restaurant is just Grayton Beach's style. Stop in for lunch or dinner at Chanticleer Eatery , and split a sandwich after a long morning in the sun. Check out their outdoor dining and enjoy all your favorite oceanside foods like crab cakes, jambalaya, and a seafood platter.

Head to Chiringo for gorgeous ocean views and a fresh Spanish-style menu, including fish sandwiches and tacos. Enjoy freshly made dips and a specialty 'Rita. Cocktails, made from freshly squeezed juices, are a great way to unwind while overlooking the pristine waters and clean, sandy beach.

For an evening out, drop by Borago for traditional Italian dishes and seafood dishes inspired by the Gulf, such as Creamy Seafood Fricassee loaded with shrimpy, scallops, and lump crab. Add an Aperol spritz or one of their other hand-crafted cocktails featuring freshly squeezed juices.

Oceanside Specialties

Get your fill of seafood at Grayton Seafood Co ., which has Southern staples like gumbo, fried green tomatoes, and New Orleans Praline Bread Pudding for dessert.

Eat like a local at Hurricane Oyster Bar & Grill . Grab oysters in any preparation: grilled, steamed, baked, and raw off the shell with specific international flavorings. Try the World Tour to sample one of each.

Tribe Kelley Surf Post

On Hotz Avenue, Tribe Kelley Surf Post , owned by the wife-husband duo, Brittney and Brian Kelley (who makes up one-half of the country duo Florida-Georgia Line), offers clothing, jewelry, and trendy knickknacks. Shop and go home with something you can't find anywhere else. The team designs its off-duty chic collections right on the top floor of its beach abode.

The Zoo Gallery

The carefully curated artistic retreat, The Zoo Gallery , fills every inch of the space with eclectic, original artworks. Find everything from furniture and home decor to cards and prints.

Shops of Grayton

Roam the quaint village of the Shops of Grayton for unique jewelry, art, gifts, and food. Find fun accessories and coastal apparel at the charming lifestyle boutique Tip Top Design Co .

Grayton Beach State Park

Highway 30A is home to some of the most stunning dune lakes, which you can fully experience at Grayton Beach State Park . Head out at sunrise or sunset with paddle boards from BOTE Grayton Beach or kayaks from Adventure 30A , and catch a coastal scene like no other. We're talking pastel skies and sparkling blue waters, folks. Once you're comfortable on the calm waters, try the ocean on for size.

Grayton Beer Company

Crack open a taste of local flair from Grayton Beach. The Grayton Beer Company started with two classic brews, an IPA and a Pale Ale, and vacationers and locals alike instantly fell head over hops. Visit the Taproom (with a tasty bar menu), hang out to play life-size Jenga or cornhole, or taste one of the more than 20 unique beers. It'll make your experience that much more authentic.

Captain Phil's Charters

Take the whole family fishing on a Captain Phil's Charters excursion. After a pickup at Grayton Beach, you and your family will catch fish in no time. Popular fish varieties include Red Snapper, Grouper, and Trigger Fish.

Underwater Museum of Art

In the waters near Grayton Beach, the first U.S. permanent underwater sculpture museum sits about a mile offshore. It's a perfect exhibit for art lovers and environmentalists, and the "underwater garden" provides an artificial reef habitat for local marine life. The Underwater Museum of Art's mission is to help expand fishing populations and conserve the environment.

The Shard Shop

Take a break from the sun, and let the coastal colors inspire an afternoon at The Shard Shop . Sign up for a class, or create your own one-of-a-kind art mosaic masterpiece using glass and resin.

Grayton Beach

Grayton Beach, Florida has lured visitors for centuries with its beauty and tranquility. Determined beach-goers used to travel to Grayton Florida’s white sands by horse and buggy. While travel to Grayton Beach, Fl. is much quicker now, the towering sand dunes and sweet tea-colored waters of its coastal dune lakes remain as pristine and breathtaking as the Grayton Beach of years ago.

Tourists and locals love the relaxed attitude of Grayton Beach. It’s the type of place where neighbors hand out free “Grayton Beach: Nice Dogs, Strange People” bumper stickers, locals stop by the corner coffee shop for hugs and folks wait patiently for hours to get a taste of 30A’s most famous crab cakes.

Grayton Beach State Park and the Point Washington State Forest border the small town, which means you might just spot a roving bear, deer or wild boar as the sun begins to set.

The beaches here are pristine and full of activity. Because large parts of the beach are preserved as state park, you will find towering sand dunes bordering the waters of Western Lake and the Gulf of Mexico. And because Grayton Beach is one of two beaches in South Walton where driving on the beach is allowed by permit, it is common to tailgate with groups of friends in between casting a fishing line into the Gulf or cooling off in the shallow waters of the lake.

Once you are in town, slow down, explore the streets of Grayton by bicycle and indulge in a sunset that you will not soon forget. Grayton Beach is special and just a tad weird — and that is exactly how the locals like it.

You can get expert help on finding the perfect piece of Grayton Beach real estate  from the area’s leading 30A real estate providers, The Beach Group .

Complete Guide to One Day at Grayton Beach

G rayton Beach is one of the small handfuls of beaches in 30A — a stretch of charming beach towns between Panama City Beach and Destin along Florida’s Panhandle.

However, unlike the European charm in Rosemary Beach and Alys Beach and the picture-perfect architecture in Seaside and Watercolor — Grayton Beach has a unique, fun, and funky vibe that completely sets it apart from the rest of the 30A communities. Grayton Beach was actually the first developed beach town in 30A, established in 1885, making it more than a hundred years older than most of the other beach communities in 30A!

There are plenty of things to do in Grayton Beach for a jam-packed day trip. Keep reading for all the best things to do, places to eat, and what to see while spending one day in Grayton Beach!

Getting to Grayton Beach

Grayton Beach is located about halfway between Panama City Beach and Destin on Florida’s Scenic 30A Highway — it’s about a 45-minute drive from PCB (29 miles) and a 35-minute drive from Destin (23 miles).

If you’re flying into Grayton Beach, you will likely arrive at the Northwest Florida Beaches International Airport , which is about a 45-minute drive from Grayton Beach (33 miles), or the Destin-Fort Walton Beach Airport , which is about an hour’s drive from Grayton Beach (43 miles). Alternatively, you could fly to Pensacola International Airport , which is about a two-hour drive (74 miles) from Grayton Beach.

Getting Around Grayton Beach

You technically don’t need a rental car to get around Grayton Beach. Everything (for the most part) is within walking distance, and there is a free shuttle ( Grayton Beach Trams)  that will take you from the northern part of Grayton Beach down DeFuniak Street to the public beach access point. If you do choose to use the tram — take advantage of the free parking in the parking lot.

However, there are not many options for places to stay in Grayton Beach. Because of this, we recommend staying in a nearby beach town with more options, like Rosemary Beach or Seaside, or a larger city, like Panama City Beach or Destin, and making the short drive into Grayton Beach to visit for the day (or longer!).

Best Places to Eat in Grayton Beach

There aren’t a ton of places to eat in Grayton Beach, but the places that are there are excellent! While spending the day in Grayton Beach, check out a few (or all!) of these restaurants:

Black Bear Bread Co.

Black Bear Bread Co. was hands-down my favorite spot in Grayton Beach (and honestly, my favorite coffee shop I’ve found so far in 30A!). If you’re only spending one day in Grayton Beach, this is definitely where you need to grab breakfast.

This Parisian-style bakery and cafe offers delicious breakfast sandwiches, other breakfast items, like Smoked Salmon Tartines and French Toast, and delicious pastries and bread, including sourdough, croissants, cinnamon rolls, scones, and more. The coffee and espresso drinks are also amazing — I loved the Bear Latte!

Roux 30A

If you’re looking for an upscale dining experience in Grayton Beach — look no further than Roux 30A . This would be the perfect spot for a celebration dinner or fancy date night!

Roux 30A offers a six-course tasting menu that is constantly changing with the freshest, in-season local ingredients. The open kitchen concept and community tables offer a warm, inviting atmosphere. Just be sure to make reservations for the standard tasting from 5 PM to 8:30 PM on Tuesday to Thursday or at 7 PM on Friday to Sunday. Roux 30A does not accept walk-ins.

Hurricane Oyster Bar & Grill

If you like oysters — and even if you don’t — you have to pay a visit to Hurricane Oyster Bar & Grill in Grayton Beach. This laid-back establishment offers tons of seafood options, including oysters (duh), as well as fish, shrimp, and lobster tacos, fish sandwiches, gumbo, and more.

Even if there aren’t seafood lovers in your group, you’ll also find salads, burgers, sandwiches, and other options on the menu. Be sure to check out the daily happy hour from 3 PM – 6 PM for $2 draft beers, $5 margaritas, and $6 glasses of wine.

Chiringo

If you’re looking for a casual spot to grab some grub right off the beach, pay a visit to Chiringo . Chiringo describes itself as a “casual beachside bar and eatery that blends global beach flavors with Southern charm” — and it’s a fun spot to hang out, too!

On the menu, you’ll find lots of delicious things to eat, like bowls, salads, sandwiches, tacos, appetizers, and more. They also offer tons of fun cocktails, including the Ringo Rita, The Jolt, and the H2 “OH.” You’ll also find beer, wine, and non-alcoholic drinks on the menu.

Chanticleer Eatery

Chanticleer Eatery is a casual, unfussy eatery that serves delicious lunch and dinner at Grayton Beach. The menu includes items like appetizers, salads, entrees, sandwiches, and drinks, including wine, beer, and cocktails.

Fun fact: country music lovers — Brian Kelley (of Florida Georgia Line) and his wife own this store!

Grayton Beach State Park is the primary reason tourists come to visit Grayton Beach! In addition to the beach itself, this 2,000-acre state park offers tons to do and see, including Western Lake and two other natural coastal dune lakes — only found in Florida and Oregon!

These are a few of the best things to do at Grayton Beach State Park. Whether you like adventuring or relaxing, you’ll have an awesome time at this outdoor venue!

You do need a Florida fishing license, but many local tour providers, like Grayton Girl Fishing Charters , Dead Fish Charters , Captain Harry’s Coastal Adventures , and Fish on Charters , carry a state license and provide all the gear you need for fishing at Grayton Beach. You’ll see gorgeous oak trees and magnolias and will have the opportunity to see tons of wildlife, like eagles, pelicans, egrets, squirrels, deer, and more!
  • Beachgoing — If getting a tan is more of your thing, you can lounge around on Grayton Beach. This beach has public access. You might even have the chance to see a sea turtle. Both loggerhead and green sea turtles make their nests along Grayton Beach!

Though they serve food and drinks, the highlight is the beer. Try some of the Beach Camp Brews, including Crab Island Blonde, High Tide Hefe, Dune Lake Brown, and Double Citra Warrior — just to name a few options from their tap list!
  • Black Bear Bar Room — Remember Black Bear Bread Co. from earlier? They also have a bar ( Black Bear Bar Room ) that serves wines, beer, oysters, and small plates, like cheese and charcuterie, pasta, and more. This is a cozy, quiet spot to enjoy a drink.

The 30,000-foot industrial taproom is both kid and dog-friendly and offers tons of games, like Jenga, darts, and cornhole, so bring your whole family along for some fun!

Seeking a family getaway that’s off the beaten path?

This hidden gem in Florida , with its pristine sands and crystal-clear waters, is just the spot!

Welcome to Grayton Beach, a beach lover’s paradise offering a blend of relaxation and adventure.

From sun-soaked beach days to exploring quaint local charms, this destination promises a treasure trove of unforgettable family memories.

Let’s set off on a little adventure to discover Grayton Beach, a corner of Florida that’s less about the fanfare and more about the family fun.

An aerial view of the quaint town of Grayton Beach

Picture this: a coastal village where the welcome mat is out for both two-legged wanderers and their four-legged companions.

Here in Grayton Beach, the vibe is so friendly that even your pooch will be wagging its tail in joyful rhythm to the easygoing pace of life.

This isn’t the Florida of flashing neon and towering roller coasters.

It’s a snippet of shoreline where the only loops you’ll encounter are the ones you’ll run with Fido along the beach.

A charming small town with a laid back vibe

Strolling through Grayton Beach, you’ll notice that the tallest structures around are the sun-kissed palm trees, swaying in a gentle Gulf breeze.

Forget about the rat race.

Here, the only race you’ll be part of is the one to claim the best spot on the beach for a sunset picnic.

With an unofficial town slogan like “nice dogs, strange people,” you’re in for a treat because it’s all about embracing the quirks and enjoying the moment.

As you stroll further, the sugar-white sand beneath your toes feels like Mother Nature’s own plush carpet.

Around here, the dress code is strictly flip-flops and smiles.

Kids build sandcastles while parents debate the finer points of sunscreen application—it’s SPF 30 versus SPF 50, a real beachside battle.

Every ice cream cone is a masterpiece, and even the seagulls seem to sing a little sweeter.

It’s the kind of place where your biggest worry is whether to have your fish grilled or fried.

Spoiler alert: both are delicious.

Wandering the streets of Grayton Beach, your senses are in for a bonanza of artistic delights.

Every nook and cranny of this town seems to burst with creativity, from the vibrant street murals that catch the sun to the eclectic sculptures that make you stop and smile.

It’s a place where art isn’t just viewed—it’s lived and breathed.

Even those who can’t manage more than a doodle will feel inspired to create.

Now, let’s talk about the star of the show—the beaches.

These aren’t just any beaches.

They’re the kind that makes you pinch yourself to ensure you haven’t stumbled into a dream.

With sand so soft and white it rivals the clouds above, you’ll find yourself sinking into relaxation as if it were the most natural thing in the world.

This is where family memories are made, sandcastles reach for the sky, and every wave seems to whisper a personal welcome.

And let’s talk about the local ice cream vendor, whose flavors are as exotic as the location.

It’s a place where even the seagulls seem to be on vacation, gliding by with a friendly squawk that almost sounds like, “Welcome to paradise!”

Just remember to apply sunscreen, or you’ll turn into a lobster, and not the kind you order for dinner!

The stunning beach at Grayton Beach in Florida

Just when you think it can’t get any better, Grayton Beach State Park saunters into the picture.

This isn’t just a park—it’s a slice of Eden, with trails winding through coastal forests and past dune lakes so rare they’re almost mythical.

Here, nature is the main event, inviting you to become a part of the landscape, to explore and breathe in the beauty that surrounds you.

A nature-lover's dream, with incredible beaches and coastal forests for hiking and biking

And what’s a visit to Grayton Beach without a meal at The Red Bar?

It’s where the heart of the town beats strongest, with Southern flavors so rich you’ll be talking about them for days.

But it’s not just about the food.

It’s about the stories shared over dinner, the laughter that fills the air, and the feeling that you’ve found your way into the warmest, most welcoming kitchen in Florida.

The iconic red bar at Grayton Beach

If you’re in the mood for a touch of elegance, Eden Gardens State Park is just a short jaunt away.

Things To Do In 30A: Best Kept Beach Secret of the South

(This article may or may not contain affiliate links. What does that mean?)

30A, with its white sand beaches and turquoise waters, is like the laid-back cousin to Panama City Beach and Destin. 30A doesn’t get caught up in all of the drama and hustle-bustle. 30A likes to take things slow, enjoys a small-town feel, and loves relaxing with the family. Most travelers have never heard of this area, a small collection of Florida beaches nicknamed the “30A.” It’s often overlooked by tourists who flock towards the more well-known close by beaches of Panama City or Destin. While 30A is located between these two major beach hubs, it doesn’t have the same party scene and is more family-focused than the typical college spring break destination.

Beach scenes, child playin in the ocean, view of beach boardwalk- The Best Kept Beach Secret of the South

What is 30A

This area of beaches also referred to as the Emerald Coast, runs along country road 30A between Destin and Panama City along the Florida Panhandle.  These are not the typical touristy beach towns; there are no massive resorts or condos but rather boutique hotels, with most people renting vacation homes. Visitors will find local restaurants and shops rather than national chains and tourist traps. It is guaranteed that visitors will never run out of sun, ice cream, or the perfect backdrop for that family photo.

Within 30A’s 16 beach towns are: Rosemary Beach, Seacrest Beach, Alys Beach, WaterSound, Seagrove Beach, Seascape,  WaterColor, Grayton Beach, Blue Mountain Beach, Gulf Place, Dune Allen Beach, Sandestin, Miramar Beach, Santa Rosa Beach, Inlet Beach and Seaside. Each of these destinations offers their own unique personality, and while some may be tiny, they are still worth a visit. All of these beach areas are relatively close together, roughly 20 miles along the coastline, so a visitor could easily rent a car to visit all of these beach communities. Although we are going to focus on our top 3 recommendations, any of these locations would be a great family vacation spot, offering a unique perspective of gulf beach life for the entire family.

Don’t miss! Four Incredibly Chill Gulf Coast Family Vacation Spots

Grayton Beach – Funky and unique perspectives

One of the oldest communities, Grayton Beach , is the “soul” of 30A with the unofficial motto of “Nice Dogs, Strange People”. It’s a hidden paradise found off a quiet tree lined road. It’s eclectic vibe attracts artists, musicians, and even chefs. It’s home to the world-famous Red Bar, which is one of the most popular night attractions in the area known for its live music and beach shack vibe that attracts all kinds of patrons, including many celebrities. It’s family-friendly during the daytime, but visitors need to get a babysitter for the evenings.

What To Do At Grayton Beach

Visitors looking for a bit more adventure can take their family kayaking in the Coastal Dune Lakes. Families can rent canoes, kayaks, or paddle boards and experience the wonders of the Western Lake, a 100-acre lake that meets with the Gulf of Mexico. These rare lakes are unique as their freshwater ecosystems sit within a few feet of the Gulf’s salt water, so this area becomes home to both fresh and saltwater species. There are only a few places on earth where this occurs, so it’s a cool feature to tell the kids to remind them how brilliant their parents  are. Additionally, there are a few state parks nearby including Grayton State Park ; it’s a great place to paddleboard, and families can also rent cabins in the park for relatively cheap prices.

Where To Stay At Grayton Beach

Accommodations within the Grayton Beach area are limited, but there are private residences to check out! Or families can stay nearby in Santa Rosa or Seaside.

Rosemary Beach – Upscale charm with old European appeal

By far, the most popular and one of the best places to visit is Rosemary Beach .   T he Old World architecture resembles places like New Orleans, Charleston, and the West Indies with colorful houses, private courtyards, and large porches to better feel those ocean breezes.

What To Do At Rosemary Beach

Rosemary Beach has a more upscale feel and encourages community with an active central town square, family entertainment options, and award-winning restaurants. Check the local calendar of events for details, but typically guests can experience the 30A Farmers’ Market on Sunday mornings,  Moonlight Movies & Face Painting Thursday evenings, and live music performances in the Town Cen ter.

Water activities are popular here, like kayaking, paddle boarding, jet skiing, parasailing, and fishing or boat excursions. While golf carts are popular along all of 30A, bicycles reign supreme in Rosemary Beach. It’s the best way to see the area and take a ride along scenic 30A. There are paved sidewalks that are biker-friendly, and bike rentals are available throughout 30A, so don’t worry about bringing one from home. This, along with nature hikes, are some favorite family activities and a great way to take a break from the beach.

Where To Stay At Rosemary Beach

A bit more exclusive, there are tons of vacation rentals  for all sizes of families.  The only big hotel option is the boutique Pearl Hotel which is located in the center of town and includes the Havana Beach Bar and Grill , their fine dining AAA four-diamond restaurant which includes options for dining: the main dining room ( a more fine dining experience), the veranda with amazing views , the Rooftop, or in the Lounge.

One thing to note is that Rosemary beaches are “private,” which gives guests an additional sense of privacy. They are only accessible to people who are staying in Rosemary and have a code or a wristband to allow entrance to the beach.

Santa Rosa Beach– Cool colors and casual vibes

Our personal favorite is Santa Rosa Beach . It has a casual feel with cute colorful houses and décor. The Gulf Place Town Center serves as the central hub and includes a coffee shop, restaurants, and local boutiques. Golf carts are extremely popular, and many house rentals provide one ( if not, travelers can rent one).

What To Do At Santa Rosa Beach

My family walked to most places, but we did drive a car down to the Town Center as well as go to the neighboring area of Waterscape for dinner one evening. This area is not as crowded as Rosemary Beach, and while Santa Rosa has restaurants and bars, they tend to close around 8 or 9 pm. If a person is looking for nightlife, they’ll need to look elsewhere.

While this city area has all the water sports, it also is another great opportunity for outdoor activities. Families can visit nearby Deer Lake State Park and walk the ¼ mile beach boardwalk to view the sand dunes (the sugar-white sand is sometimes called  Florida snow). There is also the Timpoochee Trai l which is a paved 18-mile path great for family bike trips in which visitors pass through numerous towns, beaches, and beautiful natural areas. Don’t worry about getting tired; there’s restaurants, shops, and rest stops along the way to make this a very fun scenic ride.

Where To Stay In Santa Rosa Beach

Most of the lodging consists of vacation rentals . There won’t be chain hotels or high-rise resorts in 30A. The rentals we have used have all been very family-friendly, offering items like pack-n-plays, high chairs, wagons, and beach toys. One quick word of advice, double check what amenities the rental includes so you know what to pack – a portable wagon to trek to the beach is a must-have!

There are boutique hotels such as the Watercolor Inn , where a standard room starts at around $500 (pending the season). Most people book a full week (Saturday to Saturday), so many of the house rentals may require a week’s stay during the busy summer season. Prices will usually significantly drop outside the summer months, which makes May, late August, and September great times to visit.

Most don’t know this secret area in Florida called 30A. We’re here to fill families in on the best beaches, what to do, and where to stay!

Don’t miss! Kid-Friendly Restaurants on The Gulf Coast

Regardless of what beach families selected, make sure to take a little time to sightsee all of 30A. It’s called the “scenic highway” for a reason, so gather the kids, get the snacks ready, and take a slow stroll along 30A to enjoy cute shops, unique art galleries, natural beauty, and even some egrets and alligators. Whether a visitor wants an upscale boutique hotel or a state park Cabin, 30A has a little bit to offer everyone. It’s a celebration of the best things of small-town life and an appreciation of taking things a bit slower. It’s the secret of the South that is slowly gaining popularity with families across the United States and may be the perfect place for your family’s next beach vacation.

To get discounts on tours in the area, we recommend Get Your Guide or Viator (which offers 51% off last-minute tours!).

When You Go

Getting To 30A from Los Angeles

Fly into Panama City’s Northwest Florida Beaches International Airport (ECP), which is approximately 35 miles from the 30A area.  All major airlines use this airport, including Southwest, Delta, United, and American Airlines. The other option is the Destin-Fort Walton Airport (VPS) , but that also includes a 1-2-hour drive to the 30A area. Many people don’t mind driving the extra distance if they can get a cheaper flight from VPS plus, it’s a smaller airport, so it is usually not as crowded as other Florida airports.

Regardless of which airport visitors use, nonstop flights are hard to find from Los Angeles as most flights include a layover in Dallas, Houston, or even Atlanta. For the brave souls that chose to drive, it’s about a 32-hour drive from Los Angeles to Rosemary Beach. While I don’t think I would survive, this could make for an epic road trip for the family that has the time and sanity.

An excellent discount site for flights (and cars, hotels) is Expedia ! This is where we start our research for the best deals!

Grayton Beach Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

This info provided in a helpful spirit. Please verify accuracy and details for any of the info below. Get Quick answers to all your questions on SoWal Forum>

Where is Grayton Beach? Grayton Beach is a small, historic beach village on the Florida Panhandle Gulf coast halfway between Destin and Panama City. Grayton Beach is in the center of a 20-mile long stretch of spectacular beaches, with rugged dune systems, and freshwater lakes.

Scenic Highway 30-A winds along the coast and connects the villages of Dune Allen Beach, Santa Rosa Beach, Blue Mountain Beach, Grayton Beach, WaterColor, Seaside, Seagrove Beach, Camp Creek, Seacrest Beach, Rosemary Beach, and Inlet Beach.

The landscape is stunning and is the only ecosystem of its kind in the world. Collectively, the area is known as the “Beaches of South Walton”. South Walton refers to the southern portion of Walton County Florida, below the Choctawhatchee (chock-tuh-hatch-ee) Bay.

What makes Grayton Beach special? The locals! Grayton Beach is an historic town, one of the oldest beach towns in the Southeast. It is a free-willed and free-spirited place that is hard to describe in words. It first belonged to the Choctaw Indians, then American pioneers braving sandy trails, mosquitoes, and wild hogs. Present-day Grayton Beach is made up mostly of southern folks and their descendants who came to Grayton to get away from it all. Irony has brought it all back to them in the form of vacationers and real estate speculators. Not long ago it wasn’t uncommon for there to be more dogs than people in Grayton. Old-timers like to tell tales about times gone by when a strange car coming into town was an unusual event.

How do I get to Grayton Beach? If you’re flying, you will arrive at either the Fort Walton Beach Airport to the West or Panama City Airport to the East. Both are an easy hour drive from Grayton Beach. If you are driving or flying, check out our travel and driving directions .

What is the history of Grayton Beach? Read about Grayton Beach history

What is there to do in Grayton Beach? The beach itself is wide, with sand so bright and clean it sings under your feet. The Gulf is usually warm and clear. First-time visitors are often surprised that the water is clear, blue, and turquoise like the Caribbean. Western Lake in Grayton is one of the dozen or so freshwater lakes in the area that open periodically to the Gulf, providing an abundance of fish and marine life. The lake extends right to the beach and is a favorite place for families with young children, who can swim and play in the shallow lake adjacent the normally calm Gulf surf.

What groups and organizations are there in Grayton Beach? For a current list of Grayton Beach are groups & organizations visit SoWal.com groups & organization directory .

How do I catch fish in Grayton Beach? It is not hard. All manner of live bait and artificial lures can be used both in the Gulf, lakes, rivers, and bay. There are several tackle shops where you can buy or rent equipment, and get the lowdown on what’s in season, and buy a fishing license. Read more on our fishing page.

Where do I stay in or near Grayton Beach? There are no hotels in Grayton Beach, but there are Bed & Breakfasts, Inns, motels and lots of homes & condos for rent all along Scenic 30A and South Walton Vacation Rentals.

Can I have a fire on the beach? Yes, with the proper permit. Contact the South Walton Fire Department  for more info.

Are dogs allowed on the beach? Dogs used to rule Grayton Beach, now there are dog rules. Canine friends are no longer free to roam the beaches and bars. Walton County sells dog permits to landowners. The dogs must wear a tag and are allowed on the beach, only on a leash, between 6 PM and 8 AM during Daylight Savings time periods and between 3 PM and 9 AM during Standard time periods. Many tourists don’t know about the ordinance or ignore it, and assume that County officials wouldn’t want to offend the tourists they try so hard to attract, by giving them a citation.

Can I have a wedding or other party on the beach? Yes, Check with Walton County for a permit requirement for groups of 50 or more.

Where are the public parks near Grayton Beach? There are numerous parks in the area. Grayton Beach State Park offers camping, cabins, boating, fishing, hiking, and more.
