Christmas along the River Thames 2022
- December 7, 2022
Christmas is one of the most magical times to be in London. From dazzling lights twinkling nonstop to wonderful Christmas markets and ice-skating rinks in the most fascinating locations, why not combine these Christmassy activities with a river cruise along the Thames?
Here’s our pick of must-do activities in the capital along our route on the River Thames during this festive season.
Ice Skating
Get your skates on and enjoy this classic winter activity with your friends and family in the most iconic ice rinks in London.
Just next to Embankment Pier , you will find this magnificent ice rink located in the neoclassical courtyard of the majestic Somerset House . Now with a bigger skate space of 900-square-metres and a splendid 40ft Christmas tree, this ice rink also offers festive drinking and dining experiences and night-time music events featured by UNIQLO .
If you get off at Greenwich Pier , located in a UNESCO World Heritage Site and surrounded by Greenwich Park , The Queen´s House is a picture-perfect ice rink with stunning views of the Old Royal Naval College and Canary Wharf in the background.
Christmas Markets
Located in the loveliest riverside spots, you will find two of the prettiest Christmas markets in London with their traditional wooden chalets with festive classics such as mulled wine, hot chocolate and other delicious festive treats as well as plenty of gift ideas.
Just by Festival Pier , like every year, the wonderful Winter Market at Southbank Centre is back. A little bit further down, near Bankside Pier , you will find Christmas by the River , a Christmas market with the most spectacular views of Tower Bridge and the Tower of London .
London´s attractions
Everything is better at Christmas, and for London´s most famous attractions this is not an exception.
Hop off at Tower Bridge Quay and visit the Tower of London transformed with magical festive displays across the fortress, or cruise down to Greenwich to see the Cutty Sark ´s rigging lit up with twinkling lights in the shape of a Christmas tree.

Cruise through the capital on this epic four-hour boat party, with Christmas catering and a live DJ keeping the atmosphere on point. You can also upgrade your London river cruise package to a VIP excursion which includes a festive party box per person, a bottle of Prosecco, plus plenty of drinks to get your cruise off to a great start!
3: See Santa in Devon
Set sail with Santa and take to the waters of the River Exe for a festive UK staycation experience. This UK river cruise has been specially designed to spread a little bit of magic over the holiday season, with Santa’s Grotto just waiting to be explored. With a balloon modeller ready to impress children with his balloon creations, close-up magic to enjoy, and plenty of refreshments to keep little ones happy, it is a wonderful way to celebrate Christmas as a family. Thanks to a small troop of Elves on board, each child on this river cruise will be gifted a hand-wrapped present, and parents will be able to enjoy locally produced mine pies and a glass of mulled wine made with a homemade secret recipe. Explore Devon and step on board an enchanting floating grotto!
4: Murder Mystery River Cruise
Are you searching for a festive river cruise with a twist? Why not book a murder mystery river cruise, which combines an interactive dining experience with live entertainment and panoramic views of London. 5: Explore Oxford on The Water
Fancy visiting Oxford for a festive UK staycation? Well, why not explore this beautiful city while on board an Edwardian-style river launch. Travel downstream in style and at your own leisure following the same course as Oxford rowing teams! While this unique experience can be enjoyed during October, unfortunately, the English weather means it’s not always possible as winter really sets in, so you best book quick! Be sure to have your camera at the ready, as you pass the charming village of Iffley. This 50-minute river cruise will cover the Thames River and visit Folly Bridge, Christchurch College, and Meadows, the university rowing houses as well as Iffley Lock. Along the way, the captain will reveal the history of the river as you float along in this eco-friendly vessel.
6: Loch Lomond River Cruise
Head to the Scottish Highlands this winter for a wee dram of whiskey while on a spectacular Loch Lomond river cruise. Take in the 12th-century castles along the way while keeping a weather eye out for the Scottish rain! But, should the wind begin to blow and the heavens open, Scottish whisky will make sure to keep you nice and warm while on board! Or, for a more exhilarating way to visit Loch Lomond, perhaps you’d prefer a speedboat experience with a Champagne picnic! This unique experience is certainly a memorable and exciting way to enjoy the magnificent views of the countryside and rolling hills. For winter bookings, enquire online to check availability.
7: York Santa Cruise
Book the City Cruises York Santa Experience and get ready to enjoy a magical event on the River Ouse. This year, Father Christmas has made a couple of changes to make sure the York river cruise is comfortable and Covid-free. Join Santa and his friends aboard Captain James Cook, a huge vessel ready to take lucky girls and boys on a festive trip. Families will have the opportunity to spend time with Santa in his magical grotto, with the chance to take photographs free of charge too! You’ll be welcomed by Mary Christmas, Santa’s good friend, and Ernie the Elf, who’ll guide you to your seats. Each child will be hand-delivered a personalized present from Santa, and guests will enjoy refreshments, fun, and festive surprises! Adults can choose from wine, tea, coffee, and mince pies, and for children, there will be soft drinks and novelty biscuits at the ready!

London’s best Thames river cruises
Get a whole new perspective of the city with these top Thames river cruises
Think you’ve ticked off everything London has to offer? Think again. Try a Thames river cruise – and no, we’re not talking about the Clippers (well we are, but only a little bit). There are few better ways to take in the capital than by its famously choppy, murky central waterway. Plus the views, from Hampton Court down to the City and Greenwich, are some of the absolute finest our city has to offer.
It's time to ditch dry land and hop aboard a Thames river boat tour. And plenty of London’s top attractions are best seen from the water – so get your camera ready.

Been there, done that? Think again, my friend.
Best Thames river cruises in London
Thames rockets.
- Ships and boats
Bring your waterproofs, because the slick RIB (rigid inflatable boat) operation offers a high-speed ride on the Thames. It's a great way to discover how exhilarating it can be to swoop along the Thames at almost 30 knots – that’s nearly 35 mph, nautical novices! We're not sure how much you'll actually be able to see, but there are plenty more leisurely-paced tours for that sorta thing.
Bateaux London Cruises
- Victoria Embankment
A good river cruise for those who want a spot of grub while taking in the sights along the Thames – Bateaux offer a full range of different dining cruises. There’s the lunch, afternoon tea and dinner cruise – or you could really pull the stops out and enjoy their three-course lunch with a live jazz band playing assorted swingin’ classics. All river cruises depart from Victoria Embankment.
City Cruises
- Things to do
- Walks and tours
Want to see the city in style? City cruises operate on a hop-on, hop-off basis and run from Westminster, Waterloo, Tower and Greenwich Piers with commentary along the way. All the departure points are convenient for the city’s various sights, with Greenwich Pier ideal for the Cutty Sark, the National Maritime Museum and the Royal Observatory.
London Duck Tours
Praise whichever brilliant mind decided to paint the scant remaining WW2 landing vehicles in bright, rubber-duck yellow! These duck city tours take in all the typical land-based sights – then has two ‘splashdowns’ into the Thames as it goes into nautical mode and takes passengers around Docklands, Canary Wharf and Greenwich.
Thames RIB Experience
- Sightseeing
Instead of a usual tour’s drab history lessons and endless stream of tedious facts, why not try something a little more thrilling? The Thames RIB Experience is more like a rollercoaster than a classic sightseeing tour, and sees passengers jetted across the water at an impressive 45mph. Lifejackets and waterproofs are provided (fortunately), leaving you free to enjoy whizzing around in figure-eights in open water between Tower Bridge and the Isle of Dogs. Try and take in some sights as the high winds reshape your face.
Thames River Boats
Thames River Boats take you all the way from the Palace of Westminster upriver to Hampton Court Palace. It’s a pretty leisurely 22-mile journey: in 90 minutes you’ll be at Kew; in another 90, you’ll be at Hampton Court. But this westward route is a lovely way to appreciate the Thames, as the banks get greener, less cluttered with high-rise buildings and the river buses are replaced by rowers.
Thames Clippers
These days the Thames Clippers are better known as ‘Uber Boats’, not because they’re the most incredible boats but because, you guessed it, they’re sponsored by a taxi company. Sure, they don’t go very fast (trundling along at a very leisurely 30mph), but they’re a pretty underrated, cost-effective way to traverse the Thames.
Vintage Red Bus Tour and Thames Cruise
Why choose between the road and the river when you can have both? First up on this guided tour you'll be driven round the capital in a routemaster (that's the old red double decker bus), before boarding a Thames Cruiser to view the sites from the water. Sail past landmarks like Shakespeare's Globe and Tower Bridge, before getting back on the bus and heading to her Maj's residence: Buckingham Palace. There's also the option to add a ticket for the London Eye on this package.
Tate to Tate Boat
A connecting service between either art institution, the Tate to Tate Boat runs every 40 minutes. Aside from getting you from one gallery to another, it’s also great for taking in lots of central London scenery. As you might expect, the boat itself is an arty affair: YBA Damien Hirst covered both the exterior and interior with his trademark spots. It’s also genuinely the quickest way to travel from Tate to Tate – this way, you avoid an irritatingly convoluted tube or bus journey.

Embark in Budapest
Embark in Budapest on your cruise ship, now glimmering in festive glory. The dedicated crew are there to welcome you on board, ensuring you settle in and familiarise yourself with this first-class floating hotel.
Your eyes will be wide with wonder as you take in the fabulous décor, with garlands adorning the staircases, lights as far as the eye can see and of course the majestic Christmas tree taking centre stage. There’s always a sense of expectancy and excitement on the eve of a cruise, especially at Christmas time and, after an excellent dinner in the stylish restaurant, conversation is sure to revolve around the seasonal delights ahead.
Overnight we have cruised upstream to Esztergom, one of Hungary’s oldest towns, a royal capital during medieval times and today the seat of the country’s archbishop. We have a guided tour of the famous neoclassical basilica, standing sentinel over the Danube on the border with Slovakia, and boasting one of the world’s largest altarpieces and a wealth of priceless religious artefacts.
The castle is also worth exploring; it was the seat of government until the Ottomans invaded in the 16th century. Nestling below are myriad atmospheric churches resonating with the sounds of choir, particularly enchanting at this special time of the year; this is the best of provincial Hungary and is little changed since Habsburg times.
There will also be time to browse the stalls at the Esztergom Christmas market, where Széchenyi Square has now been transformed into a winter spectacular, and for years has featured an ice rink and live music. Seek out those last-minute gifts from the rustic wooden stalls, enjoy the friendly festive atmosphere and perhaps indulge in a slice of traditional chimney cake.
Cruise towards Bratislava
As you enjoy your first lunch on board, we gently leave Esztergom in our wake, affording a fascinating opportunity to compare the different landscapes, towns and villages of Hungary on one riverbank and of Slovakia on the other. Wrap up in your winter best and take to the deck to enjoy the wonderful kaleidoscope of Christmas card scenery drifting by in the frosty air, then return to the warmth of the ship’s inviting lounge.
Included experiences:
Visits to Esztergom Basilica & the Christmas market.
We have sailed overnight and on waking, draw back the curtains to see the early morning mist rising over Slovakia’s fast-emerging capital city, Bratislava. After a delicious breakfast, we begin the day with a fascinating guided tour. Until recently swathed in the drab uniformity of Communism, the city has rekindled the splendour of its imperial past in its beautifully restored old town.
Equally impressive is the imposing 17th-century castle commanding expansive views across the Danube. Christmas in Bratislava is an enchanting experience, with Hviezdoslav Square now dressed up for the special season, complete with a lit-up tram with cosy interior and joyous carols.
You’ll also have plenty of free time to explore the cobble-stoned streets of this captivating city – so what’s it to be? Why not head to the regal Primatial Palace? Built in the late 1700s in a classical style, the once home to the archbishop of Esztergom now holds a rare collection of tapestry works from the 17th-century.
Take the opportunity to view the traditional Christmas cribs in some of the churches or maybe wander the maze of streets, admiring the Christmas decorations, until you reach the main square. For a seasonal treat try the medovníky, these delicious honey and ginger biscuits are traditionally eaten at Christmas time in Slovakia.
Cruise towards Melk
This afternoon we cruise into Lower Austria, a peaceful, bucolic region and home to some of the country’s best wines. Head to the convivial atmosphere of the ship’s well stocked bar for your favourite aperitif before another excellent dinner is served.
Included experience:
Guided tour of Bratislava.
We awake amidst the enchanting surroundings of the Wachau Valley where the landscape is blanketed with vineyards and dotted with ornamental villages. After breakfast you visit the remarkable Melk Abbey. Nothing quite prepares you for your first sight of this enormous honey-coloured building, standing resplendent above the surrounding countryside and perhaps even more atmospheric at Christmas time.
Originally built as a castle, it was gifted to the Benedictine Order in the 11th-century and, although reconstructed in Baroque style, it has remained a monastic school and monastery ever since. The Abbey is renowned for its 214-yard-long Emperor’s Gallery lined with portraits, many fine rooms and an ornate library.
Cruise towards Linz
Later we re-join the ship for lunch and the final part of our cruise upstream through the pretty Nibelungengau, an inspiration to poets and also immortalised in the music of Wagner. This evening enjoy tonight’s superb dinner, expertly served by your attentive crew before further celebrations with newly made friends in the convivial bar.
Please note: depending on your day of departure, if Christmas day falls on day 4 of your cruise, tonight's dinner will be an excellent Christmas Gala dinner.
Guided tour of Melk Abbey.
Salzburg or Linz
Reaching Linz, you will have the choice of two included excursions. You can stay in the city and take a guided walking tour, exploring the charming, decorated streets of the Baroque old town. At its heart you’ll see one of the finest squares in Austria, lined by grand pastel-coloured facades with an impressive central Trinity Column of white marble, crowned by a gilded sunburst.
There’s also the fortress-like castle, built high above the city by Emperor Friedrich III, now a museum housing a fine collection of nineteenth and twentieth-century artworks. Now embellished in seasonal splendour, take in the festive ambience with the glow of lights and the magnificent Christmas tree in the Hauptplatz.
Alternatively, join our included tour to Salzburg. Dominating the skyline of Salzburg is one of Europe’s largest stone fortresses, the Hohensalzburg, while beneath its walls, church domes and spires rise from the delightful Altstadt. Then there’s the wonderful Hellbrunn Palace and the splendid formal gardens of the Mirabell Palace.
This morning discover some of the city’s main sights in the company of an expert local guide, then you’re free to explore as you wish. Everywhere there are sights associated with the city’s most famous resident, Mozart, who wrote his first opera when he was 11!
Celebrate the day by the magnificent Christmas tree in Cathedral Square and perhaps reflect on the hauntingly beautiful lyrics of Silent Night. This carol was written by Joseph Mohr who was also born in Salzburg.
After tonight's delicious dinner on board, perhaps retire to the lounge for a nightcap, whilst we begin our cruise towards magnificent Vienna.
Please note: depending on your day of departure, if Christmas day falls on day 5 of your cruise, tonight's dinner will be an excellent Christmas Gala dinner.
Guided tour of Salzburg or Linz.
During the early hours, our ship has stealthily crept into port, and you awake to find yourself in twinkling Vienna.
There are few places that can so delightfully evoke the spirit of Christmas than here – where the elegant imperial facades, their decorations glittering in the glow from a thousand Christmas lights, the sound of classical carols floating on the crisp air and the irresistible smell of candyfloss and roasted chestnuts is truly reminiscent of Christmas from a bygone age. There has been a Christmas market here since the Middle Ages and today the markets held over the festive period sell a huge range of seasonal gifts and mouth-watering treats.
After breakfast you enjoy a guided tour seeing the main sights such as St Stephen’s Cathedral and the impressive Hofburg complex, former royal court, now home to a collection of museums, the Vienna Boys’ Choir and the world-famous Spanish Riding School. There will also be time to explore the Christmas markets, or if you prefer you can retreat to the refined, yet cosy elegance of a traditional Viennese café for an indulgent Sachertorte.
After lunch on board we visit the magnificent Schönbrunn Palace. Once the summer residence of the Habsburgs, this former royal residence now houses a range of world-class museums and galleries. The palace also hosts a superb Christmas market, specialising in traditional handicrafts and nostalgic toys.
This evening we’ve arranged truly the ‘icing on the cake’: no visit to Vienna is complete without a live musical experience, so after tonight's Chef's dinner, featuring some of their signature dishes, we’ll enjoy a Christmas classical recital in the comfort of our luxury ship, presenting well-known festive melodies - a wonderful finale to the day.
Guided tour of Vienna, visit to Schönbrunn Palace & live classical recital.
Cruise towards Budapest
Enjoy a leisurely morning as we cruise majestically through Hungary’s peaceful pastoral landscape, draped in a blanket of glistening frost. After breakfast, seek out a good vantage spot in the lounge, sink into a comfy chair and watch this lovely slideshow of winter wonderland scenery effortlessly gliding by – what could be more relaxing!
For the more energetic, perhaps a visit to the ship’s fitness centre to work off some of those delicious meals or head up to the sun deck to enjoy the bracing river breeze as the Captain skilfully navigates our return course to the Hungarian capital. Our final lunch is served during which Budapest’s majestic skyline comes into view.
Straddling both banks of the Danube, Budapest is always an atmospheric and fascinating city, but at this time of the year, the muted colours of its magnificent archaic spires and grand domes are especially captivating on the wintry skyline. The historic and palatial buildings, the superb Roman ruins and exquisite Art Nouveau architecture provide a truly impressive backdrop for the city’s acclaimed Christmas markets.
This afternoon we enjoy a guided tour seeing the main sights such as the iconic Parliament Building and the ancient Castle District with its winding streets and panoramic views. There’s free time to explore under your own steam and wander the markets. Soak up the traditional atmosphere as classical music fills the air along with the delicious smells of spicy gingerbread and peppery goulash – and don’t forget the mulled wine to stave off the winter chill!
This evening, your final splendid dinner is followed by a Hungarian Christmas Folklore show, giving you time to bid farewell to your travelling companions and reflect on all the inspirational places, sights and sounds you have experienced on this very magical festive cruise.

Food & Drink in Europe
Europe is home to a wide variety of cuisines, each with their own staple ingredients, preparation methods and ways of consuming. From Italy's pizza to Hungarian goulash, the breadth of dishes available means that every trip to the continent offers a new flavourful journey. Whether you are considering city tours or beach holidays in Europe, you can be sure of plenty of tantalising local dishes.
While every European country will of course have its own delicacies based on factors such as its culture, traditions, and climate, the continent's cuisines can largely be broken down by Northern, Southern, Central, Eastern and Western Europe. For example, in Northern Europe, the food in countries such as Sweden and Denmark tends to be rich and hearty - it needs to help fight the cold, after all. Meat, fish, dairy, starchy foods and vegetables generally form the basis of this protein-rich diet. In Southern Europe, the cuisines range from Mediterranean, which encompasses a generally healthy diet with ample vegetables and seafood, and Balkan, which tends to be quite heavy and often spicy, with favourites like cured meats, pickled vegetables, and stews
Central European cuisines include a wide range of tasty dishes, from Germany's wurst to Poland's pierogis. Pork, sea fish and seeds tend to feature quite heavily on menus here, as are berries and delicious whole grain breads. Eastern Europeans usually favour hearty, comfort-style food, with a lot of meat, pastries, stews and soups. Yoghurt and cheese are important staples across the region, and pickled vegetables are also still common. Borscht, predominantly enjoyed in Russia and Ukraine, is a popular soup made with vegetables that can be eaten hot or cold. Finally, the cuisines of Western European countries like France, Ireland, Belgium and the UK usually have hearty, meaty dishes in common. Cheese is a very big deal in this part of the world, with an enormous variety available to try on your food tours in Europe.
