Gear up for an adventure with nature: shop hiking gear and gadgets in singapore.
by Honeycombers • 22 Oct 2021
Going camping, hiking or trekking? Here’s a quick guide on where to get the best equipment in Singapore.
Most of us have felt the call to the great outdoors – whether it’s on a rugged hike in Southeast Asia or trekking the hills of Singapore. But before giving in to wanderlust of the more rugged variety, you should make preparations for your expedition – we’re talking proper shoes, outdoor wear, tents, sleeping bags and more. Whether you’ve got a newfound love for hiking in our city or you’re planning an adventure overseas, hit up these shops in Singapore for all the gear you need. Next stop: exploring the wilderness!
Where to shop for hiking gear in Singapore
1. campers’ corner.
A wise man once said, “Never skimp on anything that separates you from the ground”. So when you’re packing for a hike, the last thing you want is shoddy footwear with poor support. Remember: try before you buy. Pay a visit to hiking and camping stores like Campers’ Corner. Here, you’ll find dozens of choices ranging from ultra-light trail shoes to heavy-duty mountaineering boots from reputable brands like Lowa, Arc’teryx and more. Campers’ Corner , #01-01, Boon Siew Building, 75 Bukit Timah Road, Singapore 229833
2. Outdoor Life
After a long day’s hike, you’ll want a cosy sleeping bag to snuggle up in. Outdoor Life is your best bet – the store offers a wide range ideal for tropical and temperate climates. The Coleman Hooded Sleeping Bag ($52) is perfect for camping in Singapore and warm Southeast Asian countries, while the Nikko Mini Envelope Sleeping Bag ($79) will keep you snug in more temperate climates. Outdoor Life , available online and at #02-20, Funan, 107 North Bridge Road, Singapore 179105
3. Decathalon
This affordable sports store has everything you need for a hiking adventure, including quality tents. If it’s just you and your loved one on a casual weekend camping trip, pick up the affordable two-man tent ($40). On a longer trip with a bunch of your buddies? Spring for the Air Seconds Family inflatable tent that’ll set you back $700 – pricey, but that tent offers two rooms! Decathlon , available online and at multiple locations including Novena and Westgate
4. The Planet Traveller
Stocked with reputable brands, The Planet Traveller is a veritable goldmine of hiking gear. We hear adventure purists are big fans of the brand’s range of bags and travel accessories. Shop everything from flashlights to water bottles to outdoor gear here. The Planet Traveller , available at multiple locations including Marina Square and Paragon
Nothing’s more important than safety, especially when you’re in nature’s arms. Equip yourself with a compact, travel-sized first aid kit with all the bells and whistles. Check out Alcare’s First Aid Kit for Travel Use ($26.32) that carries a range of items from gloves to hypoallergenic tapes for treating wounds when on the move. The sanitiser will come in handy, too! Alcare , available online
Lush hiking trails for quiet time with nature
6. patagonia.
A sturdy jacket that protects you from the elements is one of the most important pieces of gear you’ll buy, along with your boots, so don’t skimp on this. Since you’ll probably be spending a considerable amount on a high-quality jacket, you’ll want something guaranteed for life (or at least a few years). Patagonia offers an “ironclad guarantee” for all its products that also covers international purchases. The brand, known for its sustainable practices, offers a comprehensive selection of jackets and outerwear for men and women suitable for a range of weather conditions. Patagonia , available online
7. Kleen Kanteen
Ditch the plastic and opt for Kleen Kanteen’s line of stainless steel bottles. It’s darn near indestructible, and the bottles come in a variety of colours and sizes that don’t impart any flavour to your drink. We suggest the wide 64oz bottles because more water is always better than less when you’re on the trail. Kleen Kanteen , available at multiple locations including Jewel Changi and Jem
8. F Stop Lights
Whether you’re trekking up Mount Kinabalu or camping at Pulau Ubin, a torch is a must-have tool for night activities or navigation. If you want to keep things hands-free and light, spring for an affordable headlamp like the Nitecore NU32 ($79) that packs a whopping 550 lumens. If you prefer a hand-held unit, opt for the durable Fenix E01 ($18). Fstop Lights , available online
9. Timberland
When we think of hiking boots, Timberland comes to mind. This winter (gear) wonderland is the place to shop for sturdy yet comfortable boots. But the brand also delivers on all the apparel you need for an exciting expedition, including t-shirts, sweaters, shorts and outerwear. Timberland , available at multiple locations including 313@Somerset and VivoCity
10. Hock Gift Shop
Perhaps the most indispensable tool for savvy survivalists, the humble pocketknife can do anything from working with paracord, peeling fruit, and general food prep. Upgrading to a multitool will bag you some other useful features like can openers, bottle openers, corkscrews, tweezers and more. If you’re after a simple pocketknife, opt for a Victorinox Climber Camouflage ($56.90) from Hock Gift Shop. Want something more substantial? You can’t go wrong with the Leatherman Wave Plus ($225), a tried-and-tested multitool backed by Leatherman’s legendary warranty. Hock Gift Shop , available online
11. Skywatches
More than just a tool for telling the time, the modern outdoor watch offers a suite of useful features that’ll come in handy for hikers. Shop ’em all on Skywatches. The Casio G-Shock series is great for the rugged outdoors. Its Tough Solar series is mud-resistant, shock-resistant and has a power-saving function – all packed in a solid black case. If its size, feature set, and $140 price tag prove a little too intimidating, opt for the sleek G-Shock 6900 MMA. This model features G-Shock’s hallmark toughness and water resistance at just $69. Skywatches , available online

Funan Mall First Look: 10 Things To Look Forward To In This Revamped New-Gen Hub
In 2016, Funan DigitaLife mall shut its doors for redevelopment and rebranding. After its multi-million dollar makeover from its previous IT life concept, Funan opened its doors to lines and lines of people as a new-gen live-work-play mall .
The revamped, industrial-chic Funan mall features more than 190 stores, including one of Singapore’s most popular cinema operators, Golden Village.
“Shaped by its unique location in a new-gen live-work-play hub, Funan brings together experiential and activity-based retail at a scale not seen before in Singapore’s Civic District, while providing a collaborative platform for retailers to share their brand stories,” says Mr Chris Chong, Managing Director, Retail, CapitaLand Singapore.
Funan strives to provide retail experiences but also seeks to build community experiences that create social connections beyond the usual shopping transactions.
Just so you have an idea of what to expect, here’s a list of 10 things to look forward to when you visit the new and improved Funan. You can also check out this article for foods to eat in Funan .
1. Tree Of Life
Funan is now separated into six passion themes – Tech, Craft, Play, Fit, Chic, and Taste. A six-story steel structure, named the “Tree of Life”, stands tall at the very centre of Funan.
In case you get tired, take a breather and sit along the steps cascading from the Tree of Life. You can even charge your phones on USB ports scattered along the steps.
2. Pop Up Stores
The Tree of Life structure houses 20 retail pods, where retail pop-ups will be launched regularly.
This way, the retail concepts will be refreshed all the time for consumers, while providing lower risk for retailers too.
3. Climb Central
At the base of the Tree Of Life, is Climb Central, the highest climbing facility in the Civic District where Funan mall is located. This beginner-friendly climbing wall is open to all Funan shoppers.
Buying a climbing pass gives you a whole day’s flexible access so shoppers can go eat or shop around the mall, before going back to Climb Central.
4. Golden Village Funan
The new GV Funan sees the introduction of two new seating concepts (Deluxe Plus and Gold Class Express) in the 431-seat, seven-theatre complex, focusing on delivering a premium yet reasonably-priced theatre experience for all.
Spacious leatherette seats with a recline feature and USB charging ports are two highlights of Deluxe plus; bring your own charger wires of course.
Gold Class Express is the most luxurious way to enjoy a movie. In addition to the comfortable, spacious seats, you can also pre-order food and drinks via the F&B feature on the iGV mobile app.
GV Funan will also feature popular couple seating option – GEMINI halls. These two halls make it ideal for date nights at the movies.
The new cinema also has Virtual Reality pods in its foyer, showcasing popular games and cinematic content for customers. Word of advice: book your tickets in advance because the queues were incredibly long.
5. Light Up Cycling Path
Another innovative feature that Funan has is a 200m indoor cycling path. LED strips light up the cycling path when movement is detected.
Cyclists can visit the Bike Hub, where there are shower amenities, lockers, and bike repair stations too. For shoppers with bicycles, simply park your bicycle at Funan’s bike bay, which has over 170 bike parking spaces.
Do note that cycling through Funan is only allowed from 7am to 10am before the mall opens. Outside of this window, cyclists must dismount as push their bicycle within the mall.
6. Urban Farm
Besides the six levels of retail stores, there is an 18,000 sq. ft rooftop garden on the highest floor of Funan mall.
The heart of this garden is a 5000 sq ft Urban Farm that is operated by Edible Garden City , growing and supplying fresh produce from this urban farm straight to restaurants in Funan.
The rooftop garden is a place you could visit if you need a respite from the noisy crowds. Everything from the urban garden is edible (but please don’t pluck any yourself), with many of these vegetables and herbs being used in the mall’s farm-to-table restaurants.
7. The Ark Futsal
Another addition to the new and improved Funan is a fully unmanned futsal facility, located on the 7th floor. This rooftop futsal facility is operated by The Ark , and you can check for booking availability on the CapitaStar app (Capitaland Mall’s customer reward app).
8. TFX Extraordinary Fitness Gym
Besides retail stores, restaurants and cafes, Funan also houses TFX Extraordinary Fitness for the gym enthusiasts.
The gym is located on level three and is equipped with brand new equipment, a spin class studio, yoga studio, and a swimming pool!
The fitness centre even comes with a swimming pool and an outdoor deck that overlooks the district!
9. Unique Flagship Stores
There are more than 180 retail stores in Funan including the pop-up pods, featuring unique brands many of which are the first in Singapore.
For drone lovers, you will be excited to know that DJI is one of the several tech store tenants at Funan. This is DJI’s first store in Singapore!
Funan also has Love Bonito’s largest outlet store in Singapore that is full of Instagram-able rooms and spots. Look at the store’s fitting room. I mean C’MON.
There are also VIP dressing rooms which allow you to adjust the lighting so that you can see how your outfit will look in different lightings.
Dr. Martens is another flagship store at Funan. Besides the brand’s full range, this flagship store will also be selling exclusive items only available at Funan. Other upcoming brands to look out for include Dyson as well as Virmall that has yet to complete renovations.
10. Technology-driven Experiences
Technology is weaved into almost every aspect of Funan mall and its stores. For instance, facial recognition gantries are now in use at Funan’s office buildings.
Love Bonito’s store offers an electronic queuing system for its fitting rooms, and an augmented reality walkway photo spot.
Finding a parking space in mall carparks can be downright frustrating. Thankfully, 36 of Funan’s 400 parking lots can be reserved in advance on the CapitaStar app .
If you’re unsure about finding your way around Funan, there are 40 smart directories located in the mall to help you have a smoother shopping experience. Also if you don’t even know where to start, each smart directory has a scanning system – after you’re scanned, recommended stores will pop up on the screen!
Overwhelmed with all the technology and the new stuff that Funan has to offer? Fortunately, Funan is offering complimentary guided tours for the public on 28 June and five weekends from 29 June to 28 July. All you have to do is register at Centre Stage on Level 1.
Funan mall in Singapore has definitely come out with a bang and has such a huge variety of product stores from IT, fashion, furniture, food and crafts. There are so many stores for you to check out so get ready for some heavy shopping!

Bricks World LEGO Certified Store (Funan)
Time out says.
Looking for more complex LEGO builds and elaborate structures? This official LEGO store in Funan Mall is the first adult-focused concept store in Singapore. Walk up to the front of the industrial-style store where the words 'Adults Welcome' greet you and feel free to browse the wide range of sets that will see build amazing structures and things like iconic buildings from different cities, F1 cars, Star Wars paraphernalia and even replicas of popular art pieces.
Unlike the standard LEGO sets for kids, these sets are generally more complex, and take longer to build – and it is intentional! Think of it as zen in a brick – most adult (and young adult too) builders have said that LEGO set building helps them find their flow and focus singularly on a task, allowing their mind to rest. Instruction booklets are provided so don't be afraid to take up a challenge!
The concept store is also set to hold workshops and classes for hobbyists who want to challenge themselves more and improve in their craft.
Been there, done that? Think again, my friend.

8 stores that might make Funan Mall the next fashion hotspot
Whether you’re shopping for a new work dress or a weekend playsuit, these brands have got you covered. Best of all, they are all under one roof

The newly revamped Funan Mall might no longer be a digital mall focused on IT. But that just means the refurbished mall is ramping up in other areas, from food to entertainment and of course, shopping. As a matter of fact, there are plenty of cool things to see and do at the shopping centre.
But we want to talk about their fashion offerings, because what would a mall be without them? Funan’s array of fashion labels — ranging from Love, Bonito and All Would Envy to Carrie K and The Form — show that the mall is going beyond the usual suspects, with brands that are youthful, unique and stylish. For some, their store in Funan would be their largest, first, or flagship. Below, we’ve scoured eight labels that will be opening shop in Funan and why we’re excited for them.
1. Intoxiquette

A post shared by Intoxiquette.com (@intoxiquette) on Jan 18, 2019 at 5:55pm PST
Intoxiquette (say: Intoxicate) is a local fashion e-retailer that has garnered over 50 thousand followers on its Facebook since its inception in 2008. Why? Intoxiquette retails stylish, wearable pieces that range from dresses, tops and bottoms to bags and shoes. So if you’re looking for your next outfit, Intoxiquette’s second boutique (its first boutique is in Centrepoint, Orchard) in Funan is the place to go. Japanese eyewear retailer Zoff has always been satiating its customers with contemporary, stylish glasses ever since it opened its first store in Singapore in April 2017. You can choose from six different types of lenses to accompany your new frames, such as its aspheric thin lenses (that reduces distortion to your vision) and progressive lenses (that helps to better focus on objects that are closer to you). Those frames that come with its standard lenses can be collected on the same day, in the matter of 30 minutes.

Also new at this store are two spacious VIP rooms with wheelchair and pram priority access, as well as an on-demand book-a-stylist service for a more thoughtful and personalised shopping experience. What’s more, its Funan store will offer a greater assortment of sleek, office-friendly styles to cater to the working women in the vicinity. Looking for an #ootd spot? Its store boasts a ‘fashion runway’ that makes use of Augmented Reality (AR) — think field of flowers and more — and Facebook filters to create a one-of-a-kind backdrop.

Airlines raced on Friday to contain the effects of a tech outage that severely disrupted travel around the world early in the day, delaying or stranding passengers and flight crews.
The outage, which affected many industries and emergency services, caused chaos at airports, with more than half of flight cancellations concentrated in the United States, one of the busiest aviation markets in the world. The industry appeared to be getting a handle on the disruption on Friday afternoon, but its effects could ripple into the weekend.
More than 2,400 flights across the country were canceled on Friday and thousands more were delayed, according to FlightAware, a company that tracks flight information. Airports serving large cities, such as New York City, Chicago and Atlanta, were among the hardest hit.
There were about 110,000 commercial flights scheduled worldwide on Friday, according to Cirium, an aviation data company. A quarter were set to depart from U.S. airports, carrying up to 3.7 million passengers.

As the sun rose over the East Coast, major carriers, including American Airlines, Delta Air Lines and United Airlines, had paused flights. Each had begun to restart operations by around 9 a.m. Eastern time, scrambling to minimize the reverberating effects of the earlier delays and cancellations.
“Travelers, we’re working with airlines to closely monitor the global I.T. issue that could continue to affect flights this weekend,” the Federal Aviation Administration said in a statement on social media.
The agency said none of its systems, including those at its air traffic control operations, were affected by technology outages.
American said in a statement that it had been able to “safely reestablish” its operation as of 5 a.m. Delta and United said flights had resumed in the morning. Several carriers said they would waive fees and fare differences or offer refunds.
But a Transportation Department representative said airlines might be obligated to go further and provide travelers with ground transportation, as well as accommodation to those affected by overnight cancellations.
At Denver International Airport, large screens where arrivals and departures would usually be displayed were flashing blue error messages, leaving some passengers confused and uneasy.
Frank Tingley, a 42-year-old data analyst, was among the thousands of travelers stranded at that airport.
“I’m not good, actually,” he said, adding that he first noticed an issue when airport staff had difficulties scanning tickets for his flight to Boston Logan International Airport.
Mr. Tingley said he was initially allowed to board the plane but after further complications and delays, passengers were told to get off.
“The general mood is that people are finding a quiet corner and just trying to hunker down,” he said.
An anxious scene played out late Friday morning at Albany International Airport as airline passengers who arrived after the earlier delays rushed to find their bags and used cellphones to put their plans back in order.
At a gate where an American Airlines flight to Charlotte, N.C., would soon board, passengers swapped stories and sought help from two airline agents who worked quickly to untangle their routes.
The airline employees seemed to succeed in some cases. But not everyone would arrive to where they were going before night fell. A man and woman with two children who were headed to Los Angeles discussed where to spend the night in Charlotte.
The outage affected several airline systems.
For United, that included those used to calculate aircraft weight, check in customers and manage call center phones. At Taoyuan International, Taiwan’s largest airport, and Hong Kong International Airport, airline agents had to manually check passengers in. In India, some airlines issued handwritten boarding passes because they couldn’t print them or issue them digitally.
In South Korea, Jeju Air, which flies to dozens of Asian and Pacific destinations, said on its website that a number of services, including flight reservations, were disrupted. Air Premia said its reservations and online check-in systems were not working normally, and urged passengers flying to San Francisco and Newark to arrive at Seoul’s Incheon airport as soon as possible.
Planes already in the sky were able to continue to their destinations.
Some airlines were hardly affected. Alaska Airlines, the nation’s fifth-largest carrier, canceled only a handful of flights on Friday because it did not use the CrowdStrike software that caused the outage, a spokeswoman, Tricia Bruckbauer, said in a statement.
“We are working hard to accommodate as many impacted guests from other airlines onto our flights, and we’re grateful to our teams for taking great care in keeping guests moving,” she said.
The delays and cancellations were expected to have a cascading effect because airport landing slots and support staff were limited, and crews often worked several trips in a day.
When flights are canceled, pilots and flight attendants may be late to their next assigned trips, or unable to make them altogether, requiring airlines to assign backup crews. Aviation regulations also limit how many hours crews can work at a stretch, including time spent waiting at airports. That can force airlines to find and assign other pilots and attendants to take over, leading to further delays.
Carriers routinely deal with last-minute changes; they appeared to be limiting the effects of the disruption on Friday. But such widespread outages can quickly spiral out of control for even the most prepared airlines.
The industry has had similarly large disruptions earlier this year. Bad weather forced U.S. airlines to scrap more than 3,100 flights on Jan. 15, the worst day for cancellations this year so far, according to FlightAware. On average, about 320 flights were canceled per day this year, while another 5,200 were delayed.
Over the winter holidays in late 2022, Southwest Airlines suffered a major disruption when it was unable to cope with severe weather at airports in Denver and Chicago. The airline, one of the nation’s largest, ended up canceling nearly 17,000 flights — more than a third of those scheduled — over the last 10 days of the year. That episode cost Southwest more than $1 billion.
On Friday, however, Southwest appeared relatively unscathed: While hundreds of its flights were delayed, only a handful had been canceled.

An AR walkway, infinity mirror room and more at Love, Bonito’s largest store yet
- By SG Staff
- Jul 2, 2019
Checked out the new Funan mall yet? If you weren’t one of the many who rushed down during their opening weekend (Jun 28-30), here’s one reason why you should.
The new Love, Bonito store at Funan is the local fashion brand’s third in Singapore and their largest yet. At over 6,000 sq ft, it’s larger than their 313@Somerset flagship. And with that size, comes plenty of space for bells and whistles that make shopping there such an experience.
First, the cool stuff. Along their central corridor is an augmented reality-enabled walkway. Simply scan a QR code with your smartphone and you’ll be brought to a Facebook camera that erupts into colourful blooms when you point it at the walkway. Then there’s the infinity mirror room. Essentially a walk-in space with mirrors around you in a 180° spread, it’s the perfect spot for a glam shot for the ‘gram.
Actually, the entire pink pastel hued space is so photo-worthy that it’s hard not to snap away at everything. But it’s also the practical stuff that turns this store into an experience zone. The modular fitting rooms they’re known for, where you’re able to open up the dividers between them, makes its appearance here.
Then there’s the new and supremely spacious VIP fitting rooms. Those in wheelchairs and those with prams will get priority access to these rooms. They are also used for those enlisting help from Love, Bonito stylists—it’s a new service they’re offering—so they can give their two cents in the fitting room with you.
There’s also a community space at the back of the store, where fashion, beauty, health and wellness events as well as thematic workshops will be held.
Need more reason to head down? Just for the month of July, a minimum spend of $120 will get you a free limited edition scarf. There are also Funan exclusive graphic tees ($23.90) themed around Love, Bonito’s values of confidence, community and change. Grab one while you can.
Love, Bonito Funan is located at #02-09, 107 North Bridge Rd.

What we know about CrowdStrike’s update fail that’s causing global outages and travel chaos
A faulty software update issued by security giant CrowdStrike has resulted in a massive overnight outage that’s affected Windows computers around the world , disrupting businesses, airports, train stations, banks, broadcasters and the healthcare sector.
CrowdStrike said the outage was not caused by a cyberattack, but was the result of a “defect” in a software update for its flagship security product, Falcon Sensor. The defect caused any Windows computers that Falcon is installed on to crash without fully loading.
“The issue has been identified, isolated and a fix has been deployed,” said CrowdStrike in a statement on Friday . Some businesses and organizations are beginning to recover, but many expect the outages to drag on into the weekend or next week given the complexity of the fix. CrowdStrike CEO George Kurtz told NBC News that it may take “some time for some systems that just automatically won’t recover.” In a later tweet , Kurtz apologized for the disruption.
Here’s everything you need to know about the outages.
What happened?
Late Thursday into Friday, reports began to emerge of IT problems wherein Windows computers were getting stuck with the infamous “blue screen of death” — a bright blue error screen with a message that displays when Windows encounters a critical failure, crashes or cannot load.
The outages were first noticed in Australia early on Friday, and reports quickly came in from the rest of Asia and Europe as the regions began their day, as well as the United States.
Within a short time, CrowdStrike confirmed that a software update for Falcon had malfunctioned and was causing Windows computers that had the software installed to crash. Falcon lets CrowdStrike remotely analyze and check for malicious threats and malware on installed computers.
At around the same time, Microsoft reported a significant outage at one of its most used Azure cloud regions covering much of the central United States. A spokesperson for Microsoft told TechCrunch that its outage was unrelated to CrowdStrike’s incident .
Around Friday noon (Eastern time), Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella posted on X saying the company is aware of the CrowdStrike botched update and is “working closely with CrowdStrike and across the industry to provide customers technical guidance and support to safely bring their systems back online.”
What is CrowdStrike and what does Falcon Sensor do?
CrowdStrike, founded in 2011, has quickly grown into a cybersecurity giant. Today the company provides software and services to 29,000 corporate customers, including around half of Fortune 500 companies, 43 out of 50 U.S. states and eight out of the top 10 tech firms, according to its website .
The company’s cybersecurity software, Falcon, is used by enterprises to manage security on millions of computers around the world. These businesses include large corporations, hospitals, transportation hubs and government departments. Most consumer devices do not run Falcon and are unaffected by this outage.
One of the company’s biggest recent claims to fame was when it caught a group of Russian government hackers breaking into the Democratic National Committee ahead of the 2016 U.S. presidential election. CrowdStrike is also known for using memorable animal-themed names for the hacking groups it tracks based on their nationality, such as: Fancy Bear , believed to be part of Russia’s General Staff Main Intelligence Directorate, or GRU; Cozy Bear , believed to be part of Russia’s Foreign Intelligence Service, or SVR; Gothic Panda , believed to be a Chinese government group; and Charming Kitten , believed to be an Iranian state-backed group. The company even makes action figures to represent these groups, which it sells as swag .
CrowdStrike is so big it’s one of the sponsors of the Mercedes F1 team , and this year even aired a Super Bowl ad — a first for a cybersecurity company.
Who are the outages affecting?
Practically anyone who during their everyday life interacts with a computer system running software from CrowdStrike is affected, even if the computer isn’t theirs.
These devices include the cash registers at grocery stores, departure boards at airports and train stations, school computers, your work-issued laptops and desktops, airport check-in systems, airlines’ own ticketing and scheduling platforms, healthcare networks and many more. Because CrowdStrike’s software is so ubiquitous, the outages are causing chaos around the world in a variety of ways. A single affected Windows computer in a fleet of systems could be enough to disrupt the network.
TechCrunch reporters around the world are seeing and experiencing outages, including at points of travel, doctors’ offices and online. Early on Friday, the Federal Aviation Administration put in effect a ground stop, effectively grounding flights across the United States, citing the disruption. It looks like so far the national Amtrak rail network is functioning as normal.
What is the U.S. government doing so far?
Given that the problem stems from a company, there isn’t much that the U.S. federal government can do. According to a pool report, President Biden was briefed on the CrowdStrike outage, and “his team is in touch with CrowdStrike and impacted entities.” That’s in large part because the federal government is a customer of CrowdStrike and also affected.
Several federal agencies are affected by the incident, including the Department of Education , and Social Security Administration, which said Friday that it closed its offices as a result of the outage.
The pool report said Biden’s team is “engaged across the interagency to get sector by sector updates throughout the day and is standing by to provide assistance as needed.”
In a separate tweet, Homeland Security said it was working with its U.S. cybersecurity agency CISA, CrowdStrike and Microsoft — as well as its federal, state, local and critical infrastructure partners — to “fully assess and address system outages.”
There will no doubt be questions for CrowdStrike (and to some extent Microsoft, whose unrelated outage also caused disruption overnight for its customers) from government and congressional investigators.
For now, the immediate focus will be on the recovery of affected systems.
How do affected customers fix their Windows computers?
The major problem here is that CrowdStrike’s Falcon Sensor software malfunctioned, causing Windows machines to crash, and there’s no easy way to fix that.
So far, CrowdStrike has issued a patch, and it has also detailed a workaround that could help affected systems function normally until it has a permanent solution. One option is for users to “reboot the [affected computer] to give it an opportunity to download the reverted channel file,” referring to the fixed file.
In a message to users , CrowdStrike detailed a few steps customers can take, one of which requires physical access to an affected system to remove the defective file. CrowdStrike says users should boot the computer into Safe Mode or Windows Recovery Environment, navigate to the CrowdStrike directory, and delete the faulty file “C-00000291*.sys.”
The wider problem with having to fix the file manually could be a major headache for companies and organizations with large numbers of computers, or Windows-powered servers in datacenters or locations that might be in another region, or an entirely different country.
CISA warns that malicious actors are ‘taking advantage’ of the outage
In a statement on Friday, CISA attributed the outages to the faulty CrowdStrike update and that the issue was not due to a cyberattack. CISA said that it was “working closely with CrowdStrike and federal, state, local, tribal and territorial partners, as well as critical infrastructure and international partners to assess impacts and support remediation efforts.”
CISA did note, however, that it has “observed threat actors taking advantage of this incident for phishing and other malicious activity.” The cybersecurity agency did not provide more specifics, but warned organizations to stay vigilant.
Malicious actors can and will exploit confusion and chaos to carry out cyberattacks on their own. Rachel Tobac, a social engineering expert and founder of cybersecurity firm SocialProof Security, said in a series of posts on X to “verify people are who they say they are before taking sensitive actions.”
“Criminals will attempt to use this IT outage to pretend to be IT to you or you to IT to steal access, passwords, codes, etc.,” Tobac said.
What do we know about misinformation so far?
It’s easy to understand why some might have thought that this outage was a cyberattack. Sudden outages, blue screens at airports, office computers filled with error messages, and chaos and confusion. As you might expect, a fair amount of misinformation is already flying around , even as social media sites incorrectly flag trending topics like “cyberattack.”
Remember to check official sources of news and information, and if something seems too good to be true, it might just well be.
TechCrunch will keep this report updated throughout the day.
