For domestic flights bound for Boracay airport , the Godofredo P. Ramos Airport or Caticlan Airport in Caticlan is your main jump-off point to the island. One of the underrated Aklan tourist attractions is the Liktinon White Rocks, an eco-tourism site at the heart of a mountain forest in Madalag, Aklan.

Surrounding the lush landscape are huge boulders with crystal clear waters gushing down from the Aklan River Watershed Forest Reserve, one of the inland tourist spots in Libacao, Aklan. 

To get there, ride a private van transfer from Kalibo, which is 40km away. Afterward, you have to trek the rocky shallows of the Timbaban River.

Nabas Wind Farm is perched on the foothills of Baranggay Pawa, Nabas, Aklan. The next time you visit Boracay, be on the lookout for the gigantic wind turbines visible from the White Beach area.

Nabas Wind Farm is part of the sustainable development projects in the province. With the help of Petro Wind Energy Inc. (PWEI), it continues to supply renewable energy to the Visayas Grid and provides electricity to remote households in Aklan since 2015.

To get there, you need to ride a bus or van bound for Kalibo from Caticlan Jetty Port. You can ask the driver to drop you off at the Nabas - Unidos Crossing. Then, ride a habal-habal and traverse the 5km uphill road to the windmill mountain peak.

Aside from secluded beaches, the town of Buruanga in Aklan is also home to natural attractions, including the eco-tourism destination at Hacienda Maria, which is located in Sitio Sapsapon, Brgy. Tigum. 

Getting there will require you to trek two kilometers up a steep mountain. Once you reach the place, you’ll get mesmerized by how enchanting the waterfalls look. Then, take a refreshing dip in the cold waters that are over 10 feet deep.  

Hacienda Maria has two caves with magnificent stalactite and stalagmite formations inside. However, if you're not in the mood to dip in waterfalls outside the caves, you can opt for a hot pot jacuzzi filled with lukewarm water, local limes, and herbal leaves.

5. Ariel’s Point 

Ariel’s Point has three diving planks: five-meter level, eight-meter level, and the highest level is 15 meters high. Lifeguards are ready to assist divers so you’ll be in good hands. Other activities you can try include snorkeling and kayaking.

If you get hungry, you can drop by the restaurant and have some barbecue with free-flowing drinks. The best thing about visiting Ariel’s Point is you can rent a small pump boat and visit other beaches in Buruanga, such as Hinugtan Beach and Naasog Point.

1. Nagata Falls

If you’re after extreme adventure, trek your way to the majestic Nagata Falls. It is one of the remotest tourist spots in Aklan.

Expect to trail on dense forests, cross rivers multiple times, and assault untamed terrains before finally catching sight of its beauty. Lush forests surround Nagata Falls, a perfect fit for those after a tranquil and off-beaten destination.

2. Hinugtan Beach

Hinugtan Beach boasts powdery white sands just like those in Boracay Beach. Unlike the latter, however, Hinugtan Beach is generally off-beaten and raw, meaning, you won’t experience massive crowds or highly-commercialized activities when you come here.

It’s a perfect alternative for those who prefer less touristy destinations like me. Run across the white sands and swim on the clear, turquoise waters.

Hopefully, the local authorities will revitalize efforts to manage the island sustainably.

3. Jawili Falls

If you’re done relishing the beaches which Aklan is known for, it’s time to level up your adventure to Jawili Falls. It features a multi-level cascade on a giant limestone rock formation.

Each cascade has a naturally-built pool where you can jump or dive into it. To catch the best view of Jawili Falls, climb your way to the top.

From here, you can also view the surrounding forests and different flora species. It is now one of the top tourist spots in Aklan.

4. Nabaoy River

Nabaoy River is one of the off-beaten tourist spots in Aklan. Therefore, it makes up for a memorable escape if you prefer less crowded destinations. The river comes from forest-clad mountains upstream.

All along it, you’ll find deep pockets of pools and calm banks where you can have a picnic with your family or friends. Some groups also offer bamboo rafts and cruising for you to explore the river’s attractions.

5. Tigayon Hill and Caves

The locals also refer to Tigayon Hill as “BukidTigayon.” It is believed that before the increase in population, unseen deities and spirits inhabited the hill.

Here, you’ll find two caves that yielded artifacts such as Chinese pots, and human bones. These are now stored in the National Museum. As you stroll around the hill, you’ll also pass by a giant balete tree, a chapel, and a Grotto of the Virgin Mary.

The summit of the hill rewards you with a breathtaking view of Aklan River and the surrounding plains and mountains.

6. Naasug Point

Naasug Point features a 120-feet vertical cliff next to the turquoise sea. The beaches here boast white and powdery sands for you to enjoy. Because of the thriving marine life, scuba diving and snorkeling are also favorite activities here.

If you’re done swimming, you can trek to a nearby forest and a cave, which are both critical sanctuaries for endangered wildlife species.

7. Museo It Akean (Museum of Aklan)

If you want to delve deeper into the rich history and culture of Aklan, visit Museo It Aken or the Museum of Aklan. Among the things to see here are the replicas of Sto. Nino, the province’s patron.

Since the majority of the people are Roman Catholics, it’s no wonder that they have occasions dedicated to The Baby Jesus.

8. Hacienda Maria

Hacienda Maria is an outstanding showcase of ecotourism spots in the Philippines. It covers 14 hectares of varying natural landscapes to engage your adventurous spirit.

Among the best attractions here are a cascading waterfall, Hot Pot Jacuzzi, and two mystical caves. The waterfall carved a 10-feet pool where you can dive or jump and have a refreshing swim.

Further, the caves feature stunning stalactite and stalagmite rock formations.

9. Hurom-Hurom Cold Spring

Hurom-Hurom Cold Spring is one of the most frequented tourist spots in Aklan. Aside from the beaches, both local and foreign tourists troop here during the summer months.

Although its giant pool is man-made, the waters come from a natural spring. That is why it’s cold and has healing properties. Enjoy swimming as you relish the surrounding verdant vegetation.

10. Pangihan Cave

Aside from spectacular stalagmite and stalactite rock formations, Pangihan Cave is also a protected wildlife sanctuary. The cave has eight connecting chambers and narrow corridors.

Inside these chambers, you’ll find thousands of native bats locally known as kuyapnit.

11. Basura Garden

“Basura” translates to trash or garbage. But here, you’ll not find piles or mountains of garbage ala dumpsites. It is an advocacy center where the locals transform waste into art.

To tell you, they’ve come up with quality products such as rubber slippers, old clocks, and home décor made from waste! Indeed, an inspiring model that every community should emulate to help save Mother Earth.

12. Bakhawan Eco-Park

Bakhawan Eco-Park is dubbed the most successful mangrove reforestation project in the Philippines. It covers more than 220 hectares and hosts various mangrove species. It’s slowly bringing back wildlife diversity, both terrestrial and marine.

To explore the park, you’ll walk on a 1.3-kilometer wood-and-bamboo boardwalk. At the end of it, you’ll find a shallow lagoon, a sandbar, and the vast Sibuyan Sea.

Strolling in the park gives you the chance to see different bird species and other wildlife. It’s one of the best Kalibo tourist spots.

13. Agnaga Mini Falls

Roughly around 5-10 feet high, Agnaga Mini Falls are a favorite summer getaway among the locals. Each cascade has wide and deep pools where you can jump for a rejuvenating swim.

Huge rocks or boulders abound here, and you can use these as diving platforms. There’s just nothing like it swimming here as you relish the captivating tropical forests.

14. Malay Ecological Park

It’s another destination in Aklan where you can simply unwind and detoxify. You’ll surely love the rustic sceneries of mountains and vast plains.

You can sit or lie under the shade of the trees as you gaze the panoramic views, including loose animals running around such as goats and rabbits. There are also cottages for those who want to hold picnics or those who simply want to nap.

If you’re fond of winged wonders, check out the butterfly farm and learn about them. When you get to the highest point of the park, you’ll get a breathtaking view of the town and the surrounding fields and mountains.

15. Sapsapon Cave

Sapsapon Cave features magnificent stalactite and stalagmite rock formations that will leave you jaw-dropped at every turn. On average, spelunking in the cave takes more than an hour.

16. Nabas Wind Farm

Nabas Wind Farm is taking the challenge to help push the country towards renewable energy sources. It features 18 giant wind turbines that supply energy to the entire region.

These stand along a mountain ridge, which is also a vantage viewpoint. From here, you’ll get to see the rolling landscapes of Aklan, the towering mountains, white beaches, and the seemingly endless ocean.

17. Pagatpat Mangrove Park

As the name suggests, Pagatpat Mangrove Park also features mangrove forests that host a variety of marine and terrestrial species. Just like Bakawan Eco-Park, you’ll stroll on a bamboo trail to explore it.

There are several kiosks for you to relax on as you gaze at the lush vegetation. The park is also an excellent viewpoint for the sunset.

18. Pina Weaving Community

The town of Kalibo is one of the biggest producers of pineapple fabric in the entire country. Here, check out The Herminia Pina Weaving Industry, where you can witness and learn how the locals transform the pineapple leaves into elegant weavings and textiles.

Among the popular products here are pineapple silk shawls, and the Barong Tagalog. The products here have been gaining international awards lately.

19. Ariel’s Point

Also referred to as Batason Point, Ariel’s Point is now one of the top Aklan tourist spots. But here is a fact. It is not a part of Boracay as many of us know. It is a favorite diving spot with three different planks to choose from.

Aside from diving, other memorable activities to do here are kayaking and snorkeling. The surrounding waters teem with a rich array of marine species.

10 Things that Make Boracay Special: Aklan, Philippines

Not too long ago, I was parading around town, screaming my indifference, feeling like I was above being a Boracay dreamer. I just couldn’t understand all the hype. “I will never go to Boracay,” I declared. “Unless it’s free.”

The joke was on me. Together with other bloggers, I received an invitation to an event in Boracay from Tattoo . They would be covering everything. All I had to do was show up. Now, now, that’s the very definition of free. Who am I to pass up an opportunity like that?

Prior to this trip to Boracay, every time my friends and I were planning a trip and discussing where to go next, and someone would make a predictable suggestion of even considering going to Boracay, I would pretend that I didn’t hear anything and make my eyes roll like they were really meant to stick to the ceiling of my eye sockets. I just hated Boracay. Scratch that. I didn’t hate Boracay. I hated the idea of it. I always loved the underdogs. I had always preferred secluded beaches over the crowded ones, and Boracay just did not appeal to me in any way. If I wanted to party, there’s plenty of places for it in Manila. To me, Boracay was overrated.

That was then.

All it took was just one trip to Boracay, and I switched teams instantaneously. I’m a shame to the Boracay-hating brotherhood. Bite me.

That moment when I first stepped on Boracay sand and got to see the landscape and the fun people are having, it was the moment I knew I have misjudged it. Boracay is gorgeous!!! And yes, that comes with three exclamation points, people.

Boracay is an island two kilometers off the northwest tip of Panay. It is part of the Municipality of Malay in the Province of Aklan. It is the most popular beach destination in the Philippines, registering almost 780,000 tourist arrivals in 2010 alone. I bet it has skyrocketed since then after the addition of new flights, both domestic and international, in and out of Kalibo airport (the nearest major airport other than Caticlan). And after topping a number of lists of the best tropical beach destinations in the world, we should expect a lot more visitors in the years to come.

What Makes Boracay Special

So what makes Boracay this popular? What makes it special? What is it with Boracay that makes almost everyone go gaga over it? Here are some of my ideas. Of course, you can also find some of these in other beach destinations in the country. I’m just saying that all of the things below are in Boracay.

1. The Sand

White Beach’s long and wide stretch of white sand has to be the most obvious reason. The sand here is just sparkling white especially when the sun is at its brightest. It is so fine that it is such a joy to dip your toes in it and leave footprints everywhere. (Though I still think Panglao Island in Bohol has finer sand.) And it doesn’t stop there. White Beach, the island’s most popular stretch, spans four kilometers, some parts of which can be so wide you can play almost any sport you want on it.

2. The Landscapes

The sand that slowly slopes down into the blanket of turquoise water, which turns into deep blue as you move your gaze farther; the silhouettes of the sails as they slowly glide through the rolling waves; the ridges of the mountains that create a good backdrop for the  low-lying clouds that get blown by the wind across the sky — ah, so damn pretty.

3. The Familiar

When I was in Boracay, I didn’t feel like I abandoned city life at all. It was more like I shrunk my metropolitan lifestyle, put it in my pocket, and took it with me to a tropical paradise. The establishments were all too familiar even when it was my first time there. All you have to do is go the DMall and you’ll know what I mean. Shopping? Check. Nightlife? Check. Sports? Check. Restaurants? Check.

The downside is that even the things I don’t like about the city have snuck their way here, too. Traffic, garbage, noise. I bet prostitution, too.

4. The Activities

Boracay offers a number of activities that people of all ages can enjoy. The athletic will love playing sports. The not-so-active will enjoy the spas. Even kids will find something to do here.

Windsurfing, paraw sailing, kiteboarding, ziplining, cliff-diving, swimming, running, jogging, shopping, partying, flirting , food tripping…

5. The Food

Speaking of food trips, one thing that I don’t really appreciate about secluded beaches is the limited food options. The same cannot be said about Boracay. This tiny island offers a wide array of food selections — from seafood to steak, from local dishes to foreign, from street food to gourmet, from buffet to carinderia-style: you’ll find ’em all here.

Crowd favorites are Jonah’s fruit shakes and the chorizo burger (choriburger) being sold in many stalls around Boracay. Seafood! And oh, kalamansi muffins are a best-seller, too!

6. The Convenience

There’s wi-fi in most places so you don’t have to worry about checking your email or Facebook account. You can even pay your bills, apply for a plan, or run other errands. If you’re planning on bringing your work to the beach, it can be really easy for you.

7. The Accommodations

We all know this. From hostels to five-star hotels, Boracay has them.

8. The Sunset

My blogger friends and I were having a drink at Epic and we were having so much fun we didn’t realize that the dark was already starting to blanket the island. They decided to get up and walk closer to the shore. I didn’t know why and I was not expecting anything really but when I first saw the sun as it kissed the horizon, I knew it was what they all wanted to see — the famous Boracay sunset.

9. The Nightlife

When the sun takes a dip, the fun is just beginning to some. One of Boracay’s strongest selling points that is not present in many other local island destinations is its vibrant nightlife. Bars and clubs abound in the beach front, bringing the music, the dancing, and the booze we oh-so-loved in the city to the island paradise that is Boracay. If partying isn’t your thing, you can always hang at an al fresco cafe or restaurant and just enjoy a quiet evening with friends, old or new.

And yes, the fire dance. (But I did not enjoy it, to be honest.)

10. The Crowd

It was the crowd that I had always hated about Boracay. I had always thought that I wouldn’t find anything pleasant about Boracay being crowded. But I was wrong. I did not realize that the upside is that it gives tourists an opportunity to make new friends. In the short time that I spent in Boracay, I had met some of the nicest and most delightful people.

Boracay’s “ability” to cater to visitors of all ages and from all walks of life has a lot to do with its charm. Whether you’re traveling solo or part of a group, on a weekend getaway or on a honeymoon, young or not-so-young, on-a-budget or the just-swipe-it type, there is something in Boracay that you will love. And this makes Boracay a great place to build new relationships and strengthen old ones.

As written on this post , “What makes Boracay special is the relationships that the island nourishes as families, friends, and lovers choose to strengthen them by the bay or at a nearby restaurant or at the dance floor. The music in the background and the laughter from the big crowds have become part of the island’s character. Boracay and I might not have a good start but I can definitely declare that I adore Boracay now. Is it my most favorite beach ever? Maybe, maybe not. I still prefer the quiet charm of a secluded cove to a busy, chaotic beach but there’s nothing wrong with joining the crowd sometimes and just enjoying their company. Yes, there are issues in the island that need to be addressed but it is still a special place. I love Boracay now. I love Boracay.

And yes, I shouldn’t hate a place if I haven’t been there yet. Lesson learned.

How to get to Boracay : All major local airlines fly from Manila to Kalibo or Caticlan. Caticlan Airport is closer, just a 15-minute ferry ride away. Just take a tricycle to the Jetty Port, and board a ferry to the island.

i guess i am one of the members of the boracay haters brotherhood and i was surprised that there is in fact, a brotherhood! Lolz! Well, am not here as a critic. but i would say that i still prefer those secluded beaches we have. The package they offer. from the plane to airport pick up, bringing you to the wharf and then to the resort itself and the rest of it.. but then.. a virgin island in palompon, tacloban, i say, is the best ever beach i’ve been to.. no electricity.. no resort.. no restaurant, no potable water and most especially.. no crowd. just our group.

Anyway, I’ve been to boracay once. just last year. unfortunately, the weather is not good so we were not able to enjoy the beach and the sand.

Now its my turn to say.. i wont be coming back to boracay unless it is all free.. and of course, if the weather is clear..

@ Elaine: It all boils down to preferences. I am from Palompon and of course I’m very that Kalanggaman island is getting recognized. But I believe and still would say I LOVE BORACAY very much! I have no reason to hate it, ever! There’s nothing much to do in Kalanggaman but yes for people who prefer an unspoiled white sand beach (it has two sandbars) and blue turquoise water, I think one has to try visiting our beautiful island. It’s a virgin island where you can relax and have peace and quiet.

I prefer secluded beaches, too. I’m just saying that Boracay has its market and has its charm. :)

i think this is too short a list!! hahaha.. i once was one of the nay-sayers about the allure of boracay, being myself one of the metro-drones who came from down southeast where secluded beaches lie untouched to wake us up as the cocks cry to the rising sun. having grown up in such idyllic nature made me think like, “boracay?.. beach?.. ahhmm nothing unusual…” so i didn’t really made it my ‘life goal’ to visit the place, until i needed to due to some errands. and then it hit me – boracay is a marriage of nature and the metro! so convenient, so fun, everyone has its place under the sun… or over the sand, should i say… was there early last month, and guess what? I am going back there this month!

Haha! I’m also planning my next Boracay trip, too! I’m totally charmed!

we had a seminar in iloilo city last april 3-6 and we decided to visit boracay for the FIRST TIME….imagine 6 hrs from iloilo city to boracay…..but its worth the looooong trip…..boracay is really beautiful……bitin ang 2 days…have to go back there……

My first visit was last 2008. we came straight from work to d airport.. Though i was soooo sleepy when we were in d boat, d sparkling sand made me awake and more excited as we approach d island. But when i saw d bed, we remember that we have to sleep so we cud have energy be able to explore. To make it short, we slept most of d time since we were restless and as if it was like r first time to sleep..so I made a promise to myself that on my next visit i will make sure that i will stay longer and be a normal sleeper…..and finally my long wait is over…i will be back with my family and friends (20 total) on d 28th until aug. 1!!! Sooo…excited now! And probably i will still be goin back everytime that there will be promos… 😊😀

Been there twice, cant wait to go there again this year! It is considered costly for a jobless Mom like me but I didnt regret “my butas na bulsa” twice, because Boracay is my addiction hahaha!

I am in Boracay right now..what a craphole..the Phillipine Disneyland , where they charge you 10 times as much for everything..can’t wait to get the hell out of here.

i was so disappointed when i visited boracay last year, it was OVERCROWDED and it was not even the peak season. more like a Baclaran with white sand. and to top it all, some of the sewage system and manholes where being cleaned up because it was clogged up. i’d rather be in a secluded beach camping with a tent, a bonfire, and gazing in a moonless night while playing an acoustic guitar somewhere in an island in Leyte. (Cuatro Islas i think)

You had the same issue as some of my travel companions. I suggested that we take Boracay this year for our summer destination but they refused. Maybe they thought that it’s too mainstream. I honestly didn’t get what they were bitching about and really disappointed me that they judged something that they haven’t even tried. So I found another way to get to Boracay and finally, I did! I went there just last week and I so agree, it is a paradise! And I declare it as my most favorite beach ever. I can’t wait to go back.

Just been there last Thursday-Wednesday (April 10-16). I love the sand and the food and the fire dance and the spa at Mandalay Spa. Though I was there because of work, didn’t really get to swim much (just less than an hour) so I plan to go back. Of course it’s a tourist destination so expect the usual nuisance (those manongs who keep on offering boat rides and such) haha. Try the ATV and the zorb, they were fun. Some stuff are too expensive so next time, bring all things possible to lessen things to buy in Boracay :)

I used to love this place when it was not commercialized (anytime before 2005). I am now one of the many BORACAY HATERS due to our HORRIBLE SAFETY EXPERIENCE.

Broken facial bone, face plated held by 6 titanium screws. 5 YEARS POST SURGERY: scarred face, lost sense of taste and smell, constantly twitching left eye – This is our unforgettable experience in this so called beautiful Island of Boracay, Philippines.

Is it a fun place to go? YES

Will BORACAY take responsibility for their lack of safety measures? Our experience, NO! – Travelers safety is none of their business!, your money, that is BORACAY’s business.

If you trip or accidentally slip and fall on their laid out trap like the picture below. They will tell you – “Too damn bad, that’s not our problem, that’s your problem”

My family visited Boracay in 2009. One evening, my brother who was standing close to the palm tree while I was paying our bill, tripped on a palm tree root and fell, face on, on the metal bar shown below. A metal bar (protruding through the light post) pierced through his left cheek. We managed to head back to our hotel room and called for medical help.

The resort staff and the attending doctor was very helpful but due to the lack of amenities to properly diagnose the extent of the damage, we had to fly back to our home town to have his condition thoroughly evaluated. Went in for a long surgery to place a face plate held by 6 titanium screws.

5-YEARS POST SURGERY: Partial loss of sense of smell and taste, scarred face, and constantly twitching left eye.

2009 – We filed a claim to the governing body of Boracay requesting reimbursement for the cost of the treatment.

BORACAYS Response: It was not their fault. It was apparently my brothers fault for having fun and consuming alcohol. Alcohol that they allowed resorts/restaurants/stores to serve in the island!

Yeah, shame on you my dear brother. You should have just stayed in our hotel and do nothing after spending thousands of pesos to get to what’s supposed to be “a fun place to be” vacation spot geezzz…….

Talk about taking responsibility ey? Blaming a tourist for having fun instead of taking responsibility and admitting their mistake. If, they would have cut those metal bars or even “bent” it, my brother would have just gotten a black eye or contusion.

2009 – Filed a lawsuit. BORACAY’s RESPONSE: Delayed tactic (Constantly rescheduling hearings). Their play is to force us to give up, drain our bank for paying our atty fee every time they reschedule – little did they know, their actions gave us more reason to pursue them.

2014 – Finally, a Settlement …. NOT!!!! { borat movie reference :) }

BORACAY offered a “slap on the face” settlement. If we don’t take it, they will take the case to higher court and we will lose.

Ohhh, we got so scared I tell you …… NOT!!!!

OUR RESPONSE: Let’s take it to the higher court.

No human decency! We felt stepped on, disrespected.This is not all about the money anymore, we lost that a long time ago. It’s RESPECT and DIGNITY! If this would have been offered back in 2009, even though it’s not enough to cover our expenses, we would have taken it, but no, this DISGRACEFUL settlement was offered AFTER 5 YEARS WITH A THREATENING TONE! – We are the government, we can do whatever we want. You are nothing – that’s what we understood from their response.

We were not treated as human beings by the governing bodies of Boracay during the incident. They played the blaming game pinpointing one department to another on who is responsible for the incident. We investigated and sorted things out ourselves. It is not the resort owner or whoever they want to blame that is at fault but it is the governing bodies of Boracay who is responsible for the safety of their visitors. (Our sincerest thanks to the attending Dr., the resort staff and owner, the island police/guard who helped us through the process and to all those who helped us throughout the process.)

What if this happened to someone who cannot afford to undergo surgeries to fix the problem? This person would have been walking in the street with distorted face, not able to find a job/ get a better paying job and potentially mocked because of the way he/she will look.

September 2014 – This is our next hearing date.

CONSULTED OTHER LAWYERS: We were told that we are fighting against the government hence, we will always be in the losing end. Our best option is to take the settlement amount since we will not win against the government. Wow, just wow right?

SUCH A DISGRACE TO FILIPINOS and HUMAN RACE! What would you have done if you were in our situation, would you have done the same, handled it differently or just gave up?

7 Beautiful Spots Worth the Visit in Aklan

The province of Aklan is mainly known for two things: the world famous island of Boracay and Kalibo’s Ati-Atihan Festival. Other than that, it’s rare to hear anything else about it. But what if we told  you that the province actually holds several off-the-path locations?

Hinugtan Beach

Just a short boat ride away from Boracay Island sits Hinugtan—an exclusive beach with powder-fine white sand, towering coconut trees, and a spectacular mountain view. There are no fancy hotels but there are nipa huts that you can rent for only PHP200.

The marine life here is abundant making the place perfect for snorkeling and even fishing. If you’re feeling adventurous, you can also try jumping over jagged cliffs or hiking one of the nearby mountains.

The beach is really peaceful and serene, so it’s ideal for those who want to get away from the madding  crowd in Boracay.

Pagatpat Mangrove Park

Wrapped with a maze of mangroves is the Pagatpat Mangrove Park in Barangay Panilongan, Buruanga, Aklan. The place has connected bamboo bridges where you can stroll along, and admire the trees and fishes below.

There are also several nipa huts with karaoke machines where you can enjoy a drink while singing your favorite songs. The owners of the park even allow visitors to go down the huts to soak their feet or take a dip in the sea.

Hacienda Maria

If you’re looking for something a little more adventurous, then try visiting Hacienda Maria—a newly discovered eco-tourism destination located in Sitio Sapsapon, Brgy. Tigum, Buruanga, Aklan.  In order to reach the place, you’ll have to hike two kilometers up a steep mountain, and walk a few more kilometers to tour the whole area. But trust us when we say the struggle is worth it because you get to enjoy everything the place has to offer, starting with the waterfalls.

It doesn’t seem like it, but the deepest part of the waterfall’s base is actually over 10 feet deep, so it’s pretty safe to jump from the rocks.

Next, we have the caves. Hacienda Maria has two caves where you can see various forms of the glittering stalactite and stalagmite deposits inside. If you listen closely, you can even hear water kissing the stones, bringing a feeling of peace and oneness with Earth.

The place also lets you experience a hot pot jacuzzi, where you’ll be asked to sit in a big metal bowl filled with lukewarm water with assorted local limes and herbal leaves. A small fire is lit underneath but don’t worry! You won’t be cooked to death. It’s perfectly safe—relaxing, even.

Locals there also show tourists how to make Lambanog,which they make out of coconut sap or tuba , and offer them free tastes.

Jawili Falls

Another one of Aklan’s many waterfalls is the Jawili Falls, found at Brgy. Jawili in Tangalan, Aklan, approximately 45 minutes away from Kalibo. This waterfall is definitely one of the most unique in the country because of its natural pools cascading to form a gigantic limestone staircase. Spring water pours from one basin to another, creating a series of seven mini waterfalls along its wake. And believe it or not, the entrance fee here is only PHP5!

Like in Hacienda Maria, a quick dip in the pools will tell you that some parts of it can reach as deep as 10 feet. So if ever you get to visit this place, don’t be surprised if you see lots of kids diving from one basin to another.

Ariel’s Point

Batason Point, or more commonly known now as Ariel’s Point, was featured in 2014 as Boracay’s top tourist attraction. But what people don’t know is that it isn’t actually part of Boracay. This famous diving spot is one of the tourist attractions that belongs to the town of  Buruanga, which is a completely different place.

There are other activities too, like snorkeling and kayaking. The place also has a restaurant that serves a BBQ lunch buffet and free-flowing drinks, creating a fun, party-like atmosphere.

One tip we can give you is not to buy packages at Boracay, as those are really expensive. Instead, just haggle for a small pump boat from locals in BuruangaSo you can get the same experience for a much cheaper price. Plus, with the rented boat, you can visit other beaches around the area, like Hinugtan Beach and Naasog Point.

Bakhawan Eco Park

Similar to Pagatpat, Bakhawan Eco Park is also a mangrove forest. The 220-hecatre park is actually dubbed as the country’s most successful mangrove reforestation project. And a little fun fact, bakhawan , in the local dialect, actually stands for the word mangrove.

The park is a good destination for tourists who just need to take a breather from busy streets and crowded places. Its 1.3-kilometer long bamboo trail passes by several fish and crustacean farms, and ends with a stunning view of the sea.

Here, you can take a rest by their cabanas, and just enjoy the scenery. There’s also a small store that offers snacks and refreshments for those who are tired and hungry from the long walk.

Malay Eco Park

A short tricycle ride away from Caticlan Port is Malay Eco Park. Here, you can relax in peace as the place is very serene, and shaded with lots of trees. Cottages are scattered around the area for those who want to have a picnic or maybe just sleep. There are also a few animals on the loose, like birds, goats, and even rabbits.

Upon entering the park, you will immediately see a display of a giant fossilized Leatherback Sea Turtle, and a few steps from it, a butterfly garden. Thecrew will help you pick up butterflies by

spraying your hands with sugar water. It turns out that while some butterflies love flower nectar, others prefer to eat sugar from rotting fruits.

At the highest point in the park, an amazing view of the town awaits you. On one side, you can look at mountains and the fields

On the other side, the sea. Fun fact: That island in the distance is actually Boracay.

These are just some of the nice vacation spots in Aklan. There are plenty more out there—from fields to rivers, and mountains to natural springs—so no need to worry about running out of places to visit. You can also ask the locals in the area for more information since they know the province best. Some of them might even be nice enough to accompany you.

However, that is not the only attraction that Aklan has to offer. In fact, when it comes to the best in what nature has to offer, Aklan has got you covered.

Why Visit Aklan?  

• Boracay . Of course, this wouldn’t be a top destinations in Aklan post without mentioning this famous island resort. Over the past years, Boracay has transformed itself from this quiet getaway with a lovely beach into a bustling and very commercialized place. Dotted throughout its sands are numerous restaurants and shops that will surely suit the many different tastes of visitors.

• Jawili Falls . Located in Tangalan, Aklan, this seven-basin waterfall is a sight to behold. Tangalan itself is so tranquil and gives off a sense of timelessness. The municipality of Tangalan can be reached via jeepney, and from there you get on a tricycle to take you to the falls.

• Hurom-hurom Spring . Dip into this really cool spring located in Nabas, Boracay’s neighbor. This is just one of the many cold springs located in Nabas, but it is its pride and joy. Here, you will find many pools of varying depths. Submerge yourself – or just your ankles for that matter – in water that steams directly from a mountain spring.
• Caves at Buruanga . Those who love off the beaten path type of travels will enjoy what Buruanga has to offer. If spelunking is your thing, there are several caves to choose from, including Ignito Cave and Sabang Cave.
• Rafting at Libacao . When you’re brave enough to challenge powerful waters and rapids, you will enjoy rafting at the Libacao River. Take note, you will be bamboo rafting and not your typical inflatable raft. Of course, you can also choose to kayak or do other water-based sports.

How to Get to Aklan  

By Air  

Aklan has two airports: the Godofredo P. Ramos Airport in Caticlan and the Kalibo International Airport. Both airports receive flights from Manila and Cebu and the one in Kalibo caters to international flights. Manila is 45 minutes away from Aklan.

By Land  

The best way to reach Aklan by land is to travel from Iloilo City. Board a bus or van from the Tagbak Terminal in Jaro District. The trip will take around two to three hours of travel.

Alternatively, this can also be done through San Jose, Antique (three to five hours) or Roxas City, Capiz (one and a half hours).

By Sea  

There is no major port or wharf in Aklan, but the four ports that is has are very accessible. Shipping lines such as MBRS, Moreta Shipping Lines and Negros Navigation bring passengers to Aklan from Manila, Capiz and Romblon.

Travel time from Manila to Aklan will take around 14 to 18 hours of travel.

How to Enjoy Your Stay

• Visit Aklan during the Ati-Atihan Festival . This event will be held in Kalibo and it takes place every third week of January. Yes, it happens to coincide with the Sinulog Festival in Cebu.

• Head to Boracay during the off season . The summer months in the Philippines start around March until May. These are the times when kids are out of school and therefore have all the time to frolic in the beach and party. If you want to avoid large crowds, visit during the off season. Sure, the experience will be a whole lot different, but it gives you a different perspective of Boracay .
• See a different side of Boracay with an ATV . There’s much more to Boracay than just the beach. You can see different scenic spots and take wonderful photos through this experience.
• Visit cultural attractions . The Museo it Akean or the Sampaguita Gardens are just a few of the indoor attractions you can enjoy in Aklan. You can also visit the Santo Nino Cathedral for a look into one of the preserved churches of old.
•   Go on a gastronomic adventure in Boracay . You will be spoilt for choice with the array of dining options featuring different cuisines.

11 Things to do in Kalibo + Aklan Tourist Spots

Kalibo is the capital town of Aklan Province that occupies the northwest corner of heart-shaped Panay Island. It is home to the Kalibo International Airport, the main international airport that serves the resort island of Boracay.

Kalibo is famous for the annual Ati-Atihan Festival, which is celebrated every 3rd sunday of January. Held in honor of Santo Niño (the Child Jesus), this 800-year old festival is known as the “Mother of all Philippine festivals”. In the Kalibo town center, you’ll find the Museo it Akean (Aklan Museum) and the Kalibo Cathedral. Kalibo Mangrove (Bakhawan) Ecotourism Park in the town’s outskirts, is praised as one of the most successful mangrove reforestation projects in the country.

Hello Marcos. I enjoyed this post on things to see/ do in Kalibo. Can you help me? I want to go to Aklan to experience how Pina cloth is made and to see people making clothing from it. Is there anyplace that you know of that can show a tourist this wonderful craft? I would really enjoy seeing it made, to learn about it, and to purchase some traditional items for myself. If you can respond with info I would appreciate it. Also, do you offer yourself as a guide around Kalibo and Aklan? Many Thanks!

You can start your search here: Dela Cruz House of Piña ( GMAP ). Make sure to ask if what you’re buying is 100% made from Piña fiber… great choice! I tailored a Piña barong in Kalibo 10 years ago, and it’s still good for use until now. Quality stuff! Great investment. No, I don’t offer tours. I’m a content creator.

7 Tourist Spots for Your PANDAN, ANTIQUE ITINERARY

There are many towns in the Philippines named Pandan, and we’re sure each of them offers their own brand of adventure, but in the province of Antique, the town of Pandan has a variety of activities that could entice all kinds of travelers.

One would think the town is named after the pandan plant, but it was christened – as most Philippine towns are – by Spaniards. Back in the day, a group of Spanish soldiers happened upon a gaggle of local women. The former asked the latter where they can get food to which the latter responded by offering their basket of potatoes. “ Dan ”, one of them said – “that” in the local tongue. The foreigners misheard it and perhaps out of excitement, exclaimed, “Pan!” – bread in their language. And then, as it usually goes, the rest is history.

Pandan is about four hours from San Jose – the capital of Antique. Buses that go here are available at the San Jose Terminal. Fare is about Php210. The town is also accessible via Kalibo or Caticlan – in fact, it almost borders Aklan since it is the second northernmost town of Antique. There are vans and buses from either town that go to Pandan.

Make the Most of the Country’s Cleanest River

Pandan is home to the Philippine’s Cleanest Inland Body of Water: the Bugang River. This river and its environs double as eco-tourism sites. You can try a bunch of activities like trekking, rappelling, and wall-climbing. But if you’re just going to do one thing, it should be river-tubing. You’d get to go on a pleasant trek to the head of the tubing site, going through thick forest for some wildlife-spotting and forest-bathing. You’ll also pass by the famed Blue Lagoon. It costs Php200 per person to go river-tubing. This already includes life vests and the guide fee.

Enjoy Water-sports at Naranjo Water Park

On one portion of the Bugang River is Naranjo Water Park where you can try a number of water-sports. Kayaks, stand-up paddle (SUP) boards, and pedal boats are available for rent. Kayak and SUP board rentals start at Php250 per person per hour, while pedal boats are at Php350 good for two. If there are ten of you in the group, you may opt for a river cruise aboard a motorized balsa for Php80 per head. The cruise takes about 30 minutes.

Chill at the Malumpati Cold Springs

If you’ve worked out a sweat from doing water sports, you may head to the Malumpati Cold Springs – which is still part of the Bugang River. The spring is a favorite of locals and it’s easy to see why. The water is freezing – ideal to wash off the heat of a summer day. The water here is so cold that you’ll see guests dunking in bottles of beer to “refrigerate” them! You may also rent one of the huts around the area and have some picnic – just make sure to dispose of your trash properly.

Have a Beach Day

Pandan may not have the white-sand beaches its neighbors are famous for, but it’s gray-sand shores are equally enticing. Swim, wade or just hang about and savor the ocean air. You may also stay until late in the afternoon to catch the sunset – this is one of the best places in Antique to go sunset-watching.

Check Out a Privately-ran Library

Right in the heart of town stands the LA Dioso Memorial Public Library. The National Library of the Philippines recognizes the establishment as one of the most well-stocked libraries in the country. It has a collection of over 20,000 titles all free to use by the residents of the town. The library also holds regular activities like storytelling and all kinds of workshops.

Hang Out at Dioso Farm

Retreat to the comfort of the trees in Dioso Farm. This parcel of land is tucked in a woodland of mostly rare native trees. Enjoy the rustic, countryside vibes while taking a dip in the pool fed by mountain water. You may also go for a nature walk along one of the trails designed primarily for bird-watching. When shopping for pasalubong , the perfect place to go to is the village of Sto. Rosario. Here, the most skilled weavers of the traditional bariw can be found. Bariw ( Pandanus copelandii) is a plant closely related to pandan. You can choose from many bariw iterations like mats, bags, hats, and baskets.
