Experience! The Finger Lakes Curated Winery Tours are uniquely designed, elevated winery itineraries that create a day of enhanced wine tastings and immersive experiences at the top wineries in the region.

Self-Guided Wine Tour in Napa Valley

My husband and I are NOT wine connoisseurs – we certainly like wine, but are perfectly happy with a $10 store-bought bottle (we’ve also been known to appreciate box wine…). With that being said, Napa Valley has always been on our bucket list  so we decided to visit for a long weekend to celebrate our 1-year wedding anniversary. We skipped the guided tour and were so glad that we did – doing Napa ourselves meant that we had the freedom to hand-pick the wineries that looked most interesting to us, and could also roam, stop, and take as many pictures of sweeping vineyards as we pleased. Before you visit Napa Valley:

• The best time to visit Napa is in September, which kicks-off harvest crush. We visited during this time and found the weather to be perfect (85 degrees and sunny). A word of warning though – expect crowds!
• Napa is home to 400-500 wineries, across 16 different ‘wine regions’. When in doubt, make reservations for tastings and tours.
• Napa is expensive – the lodging and dining options are all exceptional, but the prices are exceptional as well.
• Activities outside of wine-tasting/eating include: hot air balloon rides, spa retreats, bicycling, hiking, and horse-back riding.

TIP: If you’re flying into California from out-of-state, the 2 best airport options are Sacramento (SMF) or San Francisco International (SFO). Both are roughly a 45-60 minute drive into Napa Valley. I would recommend flying into Sacramento (that’s what we did) because there’s less risk that you’ll hit terrible bay-area traffic!

Day 1: Downtown + Yountville + Oakville

If you’re looking for a great place to stay, look no further than the Best Western Plus Elm House Inn in downtown Napa. It’s a short 10-15 minute walk from the heart of downtown, offers free parking, and was one of the best value options available  in the area. The hotel didn’t feel like a typical Best Western – it felt more like a quaint bed-and-breakfast. The entire staff was friendly and welcoming, and the complimentary breakfast in the morning was delicious (get the sweet potato waffles)!

Oxbow Market

Kick off the first day of your self-guided wine tour through Napa Valley by having an early lunch at Oxbow Market . Oxbow Market is a wonderfully eclectic (and some would say hipster) collection of shops and restaurants (think organic grocery items, olive oils, bitters, spices, cheese and charcuterie). Grab a few items to share (that’s always the best way to do it!) so that you can sample all the goods. Best things to eat include: 1) Venezuelan street food/tacos at C Casa , 2) Neapolitan-style pizza at Ca’Momi , 3) oysters at Hog Island Oyster Bar , and 4) cupcakes at Kara’s Cupcakes .

Domaine Chandon

After lunch, drive 20-30 minutes towards the Yountville region and share a $20 classic tasting at the famous Domaine Chandon . Domaine Chandon is best known for producing sparkling wine, and was founded in 1973 by champagne makers Moet & Chandon. We were glad we went but it was by far the MOST crowded stop of the trip (it seemed to be a popular location with bachelorette parties.). If you’re not a big ‘bubbly’ drinker, or if you are more interested in a relaxing and intimate tasting experience, skip this stop.

Next, head to the classic Napa pit-stop, Oakville Grocery . Oakville Grocery is a small grocery shop located right off Route 29 and is the perfect place to pick up souvenirs and local, gourmet snacks.

Robert Mondavi Winery

Right around the corner from Oakville Grocery is the famed Robert Mondavi Winery (To Kalon Vineyard). We reserved the Signature Tour and Tasting in advance ($35/person) which included a lovely walk through the vineyard grounds, the cellars, and concluded with a tasting of 4 different wines. The winery used to be considered the jewel of Napa, but now gets a bad rep for being too mainstream and touristy (you can buy Robert Mondavi ANYWHERE, including Costco). I’ll admit, the tour felt cheesy and rehearsed, and the venue was packed with visitors, BUT, I would still recommend going. The winery is a quintessential Napa destination and a must-do. If anything, it’s a great way to learn some history about the Mondavi family and the evolution of wine production in Napa Valley.

TIP: Robert Mondavi is a major tourist destination so make sure to make reservations in advance. We booked the last tour of the day (4:00-5:15pm) which was nice because the crowds started clearing-up towards the latter half of the tour, which made for some better photo ops.

Thomas Keller’s Ad Hoc

You might have heard of Thomas Keller’s restaurant called the French Laundry (3 Michelin Stars for 6 years in a row, deemed the ‘best restaurant in the world’ by Anthony Bourdain, the list of honors goes on and on). It’s always been on my bucket list to have dinner at the French Laundry and I was so excited to make reservations until I saw the actual price point and almost had a heart attack at how expensive it was!

Unfortunately, my husband and I can’t afford to drop $300/person on a single meal. So, we settled for another Thomas Keller restaurant called Ad Hoc , which offers a daily-changing, family-style set menu in a casual setting. Because it’s a set menu with few alternatives available, I would NOT recommend Ad Hoc to picky-eaters. Fortunately, my husband and I will eat anything that is put in front of us so we were excited for the surprise-and-delight aspect of the restaurant.

Our Ad Hoc menu for the day happened to include: kale caesar salad with anchovies, rib-eye steak, cheesy grits, eggplant ragout, cheese with grilled brioche and honey, and carrot cake for dessert. Surprisingly, the kale caesar salad was the highlight of our meal with the crispy, buttery croutons and tart buttermilk-based dressing (and I’m not typically a fan of caesar salad OR anchovies). We also opted-into the lobster mac-and-cheese add-on which we did not regret! Sure, it wasn’t a twelve-course French Laundry dinner….but it was a delicious and unforgettable meal nonetheless.

Day 2: St. Helena + Calistoga

Start day 2 by having a casual lunch on the grounds of V. Sattui Winery in St. Helena. V. Sattui is also an artisan deli marketplace featuring a variety of cheeses, charcuterie, paninis, salads, and pastas that are perfect for a picnic. The grounds are beautiful and there are plenty of tables and shaded areas to enjoy your lunch. We skipped the wine tasting because we wanted to EASE into the alcohol consumption and pace ourselves through the trip.

TIP: V. Sattui Winery also hosts BBQ lunches (think wood-fired pizzas, brisket sandwiches, etc.) on weekends if you want something more substantial than cheese and salami.

Pride Mountain Vineyards

Our next stop was a tasting tour with Pride Mountain Vineyards , which is located in the outermost area of the St. Helena region (the vineyards literally sit on the border between Napa and Sonoma). It took us roughly 20 minutes to drive to Pride Mountain from the main St. Helena area….we loved the winding mountain roads and getting away from the hustle-and-bustle spots of Napa.

If you can only go to one winery while you’re in the area….PLEASE make it this one! It was the highlight of our trip. The folks at Pride Mountain were extremely welcoming, the grounds were breathtaking, we loved visiting the caves and barrel room, and learned so much about wine production. Our tour guide happened to be a sommelier and a chef,  and taught us a new appreciation for drinking wine without making it feel ‘stuffy’ or ‘snobby’. The tour also ended up being the best bang-for-our-buck – the tour was roughly 1.5 hours, but the the tasting fees were $20/person (compare this to the standard $40/person fee you’ll find in most prestigious Napa wineries) and because we ended up buying a bottle of Merlot, they graciously waived the tour fees for us.

TIP : After the tour, drive past the parking lot along the middle dirt road. You’ll come across a gently sloping hill with a few scattered picnic tables, overlooking the Pride Mountain grounds. It’s the perfect place to enjoy the scenery and capture some amazing photos.

Castello di Amorosa

Next, head to Castello di Amorosa , an Italian Tuscan-inspired medieval castle and winery that was built in the 13th-century. It was worth going to check out the views (they also have loose chickens running around everywhere, which I thought was hilarious!) but we ended up skipping the wine tour. I thought that the castle itself felt ‘out-of-place’ and sort-of gimmicky nestled in the hills of Napa….it was also full of tourists to the point that it seemed like everywhere we turned, we were bumping into people!

After taking a few photos of Castello di Amorosa (and playing with a few chickens of course), we headed to downtown Calistoga, which was only a 5-10 minute drive from the castle. Calistoga is best known for hot springs (specifically mud baths), but we ended up skipping the spa experience because we felt like the mud baths were a bit pricey. We walked around downtown and were able to spend some time exploring the cute shops in the area.

Huge Bear Wines

While in Calistoga, make sure to visit the Huge Bear Wines tasting room. Huge Bear wasn’t part of our original itinerary….the only reason we stumbled into the place was because we were intrigued by the bear pictures on the labels…we’re so glad we did! It’s a relatively new venture (est. 2006) and it’s located on the main street in downtown Calistoga in a historical bank building. We loved the intimate setting of the tasting – talking with the staff felt like we were hanging out with friends and we ended up buying a few bottles of chardonnay.

TIP: Some of our favorite memories from vacations are the ones that came from spontaneous decisions (like this Huge Bear visit). Don’t worry about following your planned itinerary to a tee. If you happen upon something that seems interesting, go for it….you never know what you’ll discover and experience!

Napa Riverfront

Head back to downtown Napa and spend some time walking along the Napa Riverfront . Several shops and restaurants (including a wonderful gelato place called Frati Cafe) line the river and it’s a wonderful place to roam. Then, end the day with an adventurous meal at Morimoto (a restaurant owned by Masaharu Morimoto, best known for being an  Iron Chef in Japan). We weren’t hungry enough to do the omakase (next time?) but shared a few plates. My favorite was the white fish carpaccio (it’s flash-seared in hot chili oil!). Kevin’s favorite was the ahi tuna tacos (because you can never go wrong with tacos).

Day 3: Rutherford

Auberge du soleil.

Celebrate your last day in Napa by going to the restaurant at the luxurious resort, Auberge du Soleil , for lunch. The restaurant was the first fine-dining option in Napa and has received Michelin Stars for 10 consecutive years. Instead of booking a table in the restaurant (which can be very expensive), we waited for a balcony table in the bar area and shared a light appetizer (a delicious white peach salad!). This was perfect for us because we got a taste of the food while enjoying famous balcony views of the valley, without spending a fortune.

Elizabeth Spencer Winery

Another great spot for wine-tasting is Elizabeth Spencer in Rutherford. Elizabeth Spencer is a small, family-run winery – they feature wine tastings in their private courtyard (way better than a crowded room!) and offer complimentary bread sticks. Fans of white wine will LOVE their chardonnay and sauvignon blanc. Note : This was probably our most expensive tasting ($40/person). They also didn’t waive the tasting fee when we bought a bottle of wine which we found quite surprising. It could’ve been that it was a popular weekend (Labor Day).

Frog’s Leap

Head to Frog’s Leap , your last winery destination of the trip. Frog’s Leap was the winery we were looking forward to visiting the most – we had read rave reviews about the place online and also had several friends recommend it to us. It definitely lived up to expectations – the grounds are gorgeous and there are several places to enjoy a glass of wine (pick from the backyard balcony, to rocking chairs on the lawn, to patio tables in the garden). We loved that the garden was filled with different herb, fruit, and vegetable patches (corn, pumpkins, tomatoes, squash, parsley, etc.).  They only do tastings by appointment, so make sure to book early or call in advance.

TIP: Looking for a dog-friendly winery? Frog’s Leap is a great choice. There were several adorable pups roaming the gardens while we were there.

Gott’s Roadside

It’s easy to feel palate overload when in Napa. By the end of the trip, we were tired of fine-dining options and wanted something quick and basic. Gott’s Roadside , a staple burger joint in Napa, satisfied our needs. There are 2 Gott’s locations in Napa Valley: St. Helena and downtown Napa. If you don’t want to wait in a crazy long line, go to the downtown location. Sure, it wasn’t the lightest meal….but the calories were worth it!

The best Tuscany wine tasting and tours

No visit to Tuscany would be complete without enjoying a Tuscany wine tasting or tour. Tuscany is synonymous with wine. And if you’re searching for the very best Tuscan wines, then look no further than Chianti Classico . The Chianti Classico region is widely considered to be the ultimate wine region anywhere in Italy, never mind just in Tuscany. The area conjures up images of rolling hills and picturesque woods, dotted with vineyards and olive groves.

Where is the Chianti Classico region for your Tuscany wine tasting?

Chianti Classico is situated in the heart of Tuscany, in the area that stretches between Florence and Siena. There are five ‘ in Chianti ’ Tuscan villages that fall within this territory. These include Radda in Chianti , Greve in Chianti, Panzano in Chianti, Gaiole in Chianti and Castellina in Chianti. No Tuscany holiday would be complete without enjoying a Tuscany wine tasting in at least one of these! The area also partly includes other villages such as Barberino Tavernelle, Poggibonsi, San Casciano in Val di Pesa and Castelnuovo Berardenga. In total the Chianti Classico region covers an area of around 170,000 acres. It can also boast more than 130 wineries which officially welcome visitors keen to enjoy a Tuscany wine tasting.

One thing that it is important to understand is that Chianti Classico is distinct from Chianti. Both are celebrated Tuscan wines but the two appellations are independent and separate. Chianti wines are grown in a much wider area that extends beyond the borders of Chianti Classico. Since 2010, it is forbodden to make Chianti wines within the Chianti Classico wine region.

What wines will you try during your Tuscany wine tasting in the Chianti Classico region?

Chianti Classico wines are red wines. The main grape used is the Sangiovese grape. You will see different levels of wine. The Chianti Classico V intage  must have been aged for at least 12 months. Chianti Classico Riserva wines must have been ages for at least 24 months from the date of the harvest. And three of these months must have been spent in the bottle. Finally, Chianti Classic Gran Selezione wines must have been aged for at least 30 months.

Only the the red wines produced in the oldest area of Chianti can be called Chianti Classic DOCG. These wines must use at least 80% Sangiovese grapes. The remaining 20% can be made up of other grape varieties and these can be either native or international.

What food should be paired with Chianti Classic wines in your Tuscany wine tasting?

Chianti Classic wines are famous for their robust character. These are complex wines and they are best accompanied with some of Tuscany’s rustic, hearty dishes. These include our favourites – the delicious Chianina steak and the mouth watering wild boar pasta – along with some fabulous cured meats so typical of the area. However, don’t worry if you’re a vegetarian. There are some amazing crostini toppings that will satisfy these tastes, along with wonderful soups – ribollita and zuppa.

How to get to the Chianti Classico region for your Tuscany wine tour

If you’re enjoying a tour of Italy, it’s easy to incorporate a Tuscany wine tour in the Chianti Classico region into your itinerary. If you’re journeying from North to South, Florence would be the entry point to the area.

By air: If you’re coming from overseas, you can opt to fly into Florence, Pisa or Bologna. If you’re arriving at Bologna, you can catch the monorail from the airport to the city centre. From here, it’s then a high-speed train ride to Florence which will take less than 45 minutes. Likewise, from Pisa, it’s easy to catch either the train or the bus to the city of Florence.

By train: Trains in Italy are superb. High speed train connections from both Trenitalia and Italo offer high-speed travel to the heart of Florence.

By car: Once in Florence, you can opt to hire a car or organise a private driver. It’s important to note that many wineries are hard to reach using public transport. As a result, having a driver or having your own car, is essential in this area.

Whilst we have said that having a car is essential, if you really don’t want to leave the city, then we can still bring a wine tasting to you!

Grab your maps and choose your wineries

With almost 100 wineries in the Niagara region, you’ll have to employ strategic thinking when planning your route. Marcel offers the following tips for making the most of your wine tour. Just remember to designate a sober driver – or take a bus tour or hire a taxi – for your adventures.

• Plot your approach. You’ll find free maps of the Niagara-on-the-Lake wine region in almost every local winery and hotel as well as online at NOLWineries.com . Allow enough time at each winery and time between wineries – this kind of bliss should not be rushed.
• Tour by bike. Biking is a great way to travel between wineries and enjoy the scenic countryside. Whether you plan on bringing your own bike or renting from a local bike shop, it’s ideal for getting around the Four Mile Creek appellation where there are bike paths and wide shoulders designed for rider safety.

• Tour the actual winery. Plan to visit more than just the tasting room. Many wineries offer private tours of the facilities or grounds.
• Get your wine home. Don’t let your wine purchases weigh you down. Ask the winery if you can pick up your bottles at the end of the day – or take note of the wine you want to purchase and return to get it later. Some smaller wineries may even deliver within Niagara-on-the-Lake, so be sure to ask about your options.

Guided Tours Gain Popularity Among Millennials and Gen Z

A new survey by GetYourGuide found that 70% of respondents have a plan to book a guided tour in the next year.

Guided tours are experiencing a resurgence, with Millennials and Gen Z leading the trend, according to a new survey from Berlin-based GetYourGuide.

Of 1,000 U.S. individuals who traveled for leisure at least once in the past 12 months, 70% planned to book a guided tour for the next year, the survey found. Roughly two in five of Millennials and Gen Z travelers surveyed booked a guided tour in the past year, the results show – that’s 40% of Gen Z and 42% of Millennials compared to 22% of Gen X and 22% of Boomers.

“Across the board, we see travelers expressing interest in authentic experiences where local experts can unlock something deeper about a destination,” GetYourGuide’s chief marketing officer Emil Martinsek told Skift.

Authentic Experiences

Travelers seemed particularly drawn to tours that brought them closer to the society or geography they visited. They prioritized a deep dive into the history of a city or landmark, experiencing local cuisine, and the opportunity to meet locals.

Walking tours were most popular with bus or boat tours following closely behind.

Out of those surveyed, 89% of travelers believed that a local guide is essential for exploring a new destination.

An Ongoing Trend

The findings track with a previous report , published by research and events company Arival in January. This study showed that Millennials and Gen Z are prioritizing guided tours, from culinary and shopping tours to eco and adventure tours. 

Arival’s 2024 U.S. Tour Taker Report found that the younger generation is shifting from sightseeing to experiential tours. Sightseeing tours remain the most popular overall, but that popularity is driven by people over the age of 55. Younger travelers are looking for something more active, experiential, or educational.

The trend is likely to stay positive. GetYourGuide’s latest study also showed that nearly all leisure travelers who booked a guided tour in 2023 plan to do so again this year.

Tour baja california’s wine country with chef janos wilder, june 26, 2024.

Tucson City of Gastronomy (TCOG) announced its inaugural culinary tour — a taste exploration of Baja California’s wine country, Valle de Guadalupe, from Sunday, October 20 – Friday, October 25.

It will follow La Ruta del Vino (The Wine Route) between the cities of Tecate and Ensenada, in a scenic valley of olive orchards, vineyards, and ranchlands that is Mexico’s most important wine-growing area.

Designed for wine and culinary enthusiasts, the tour is focused on award-winning handcrafted wines by boutique producers, and farm-to-table regional cuisine by some of the most renowned chefs in Mexico. Highlights will include intimate wine tastings, farm-to-table culinary experiences, and upscale Pacific Ocean-front hotel accommodations.

Meet the Tour Guides

The guides for this culinary and cultural adventure will include desert ecologist and ethnobotanist Jesús García , Stephen Bernier with South of the Border Tours, James Beard Award-winning chef Janos Wilder , and food archaeologist Dr. Jonathan Mabry .

García — a native of Magdalena, Sonora — is a Conservation Research Associate at the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum.

García has also been the director of the Kino Heritage Trees Project for almost 20 years, and vice-chair and collaborator of the nonprofit managing the Mission Garden for more than a decade.

Bernier brings more than 30 years of leading tours in the U.S. Southwest, Mexico, and Canada, specializing in tours for museums, universities, and nonprofits. He is also a volunteer naturalist for Sabino Canyon.

Janos Wilder was Tucson’s first winner of a James Beard Award, the “Oscar of the food world.” He opened his first restaurant in Tucson in 1983 and has been cooking with ingredients indigenous to the Sonoran Desert ever since. While sourcing foods that have been foraged or cultivated here for thousands of years, Wilder cooks with an eye to the future. He creates modern dishes that explore cooking with ancient foods in response to climate change.

“Food and wine have been at the center of my professional life for over 40 years,” said Wilder. “This tour to wineries and restaurants in the Valle de Guadalupe and its environs provides a unique opportunity to explore this region where Mexico’s best wines are produced.”

His current restaurant is Studio Janos in downtown Tucson, and he’s also the Board President of Tucson City of Gastronomy and the former Board Chair of Native Seeds/SEARCH.

What to Expect

Among the first tour stops will be the Museu de la Vid y el Vino, telling the story of how the valley became a center of fine winemaking that is now 80% of Mexico’s total wine production. Immersive cultural experiences will include visits to an Indigenous community of the Kumiai people and an enclave of Russian families that homesteaded the valley in 1905.

Food highlights will include a wine-paired farm-to-table meal overlooking a vineyard at Finca Altozano by chef Javier Plascencia, tastings at the Russian restaurant Familia Samarin, and a contemporary tasting menu influenced by classic Oaxacan dishes by acclaimed chef Gerardo Alvarado at his restaurant Pardella Humo y Brasos in the heart of an organic olive orchard.

Wine tastings guided by certified sommeliers at the Bodegas Magoni and El Cielo wineries will showcase some of the region’s best wines, and locally crafted beers will be sampled at the Bellinghausen Beer Garden.

“We hope this is just the first of many culinary and food culture tours led by TCOG,” said Mabry. “The tour group size will be less than two dozen to enhance the experience, so register soon to ensure your participation.”

Getting There: Pedal Pub tours coming to Coeur d’Alene, with family friendly and 21+ options available

A festive new way to experience downtown Coeur d’Alene is on the horizon.

Gary Cooper, owner of the e-bike and Segway company Tour CDA owner, said a unanimous June 18 city council vote was the first step of many to bring a Pedal Pub to town.

In the spirit of Spokane’s Party Trolley, the Pedal Pub vehicle would be guided by a driver, with a maximum of 14 guests pedaling along while socializing, with the option of a drink in hand during some tours.

While council members approved his overall plan, they requested tweaks to the route that Cooper plans to implement and have finalized within the next month so he can start offering tours this summer.

CDA Tours has guided visitors through the growing tourist destination for five years, and customers are always interested in other activities, Cooper said.

“We know that the Pedal Pub is a popular item in a lot of destinations, so we thought that would be unique to Coeur d’Alene, and it has the right type of atmosphere in the downtown area for it,” Cooper said.

Pricing for the Pedal Pub has not been finalized, but Cooper said he expects to charge $39 per person and $350 to $400 for groups like a bridal shower or a corporate event. There are still some decorative aspects that need to be completed before tours commence, Cooper said. Once it’s fully decked out, Cooper hopes his one Pedal Pub vehicle will take the streets of Coeur d’Alene for three tours a day, four days a week, with Cooper and a business partner as the guides.

The Pedal Pub season will run from May through October, but Cooper said he might create special events during the Christmas season if the weather isn’t too bad. The tours will have a maximum capacity of 14 people, said Kelly Setters, Coeur d’Alene deputy city clerk. Tours begin at 1618 E Lakeside Ave. near Sherman and 17th Street.

A family-friendly tour will begin at 11 a.m., Setters said. It will include a two-hour tour around town with historical information about Coeur d’Alene and will be alcohol-free.

Tours beginning at 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. will only allow people 21 and over, she said. The afternoon and evening tours will allow people to bring canned beer, seltzer and wine, and will stop at restaurants and bars. Participants will not be allowed to bring alcohol from establishments onto the vehicle, and city law prohibits the tour company from providing drinks.

While there can be a safety concern for people drinking and pedaling, Cooper will require all participants to sign a waiver stating they will not board the vehicle if they are too intoxicated and will not bring any outside alcohol or hard liquor on board, with the exception of the allowed canned drinks.

“This is not meant to be a booze cruise. It’s meant for people to socialize and explore Coeur d’Alene and have a good time and have some adult beverages,” he said. “It is not a drunk fest. We’ve never intended for it to be that.”

City Council member Christie Wood said the city has worked with businesses similar to Tour CDA with pedal-powered party wagons, and they are tough businesses to maintain.

“The ones that we’ve had in the past didn’t really stick with it, but this group seems that it really wants to do more of a historical bent, where they’re showing tours of downtown Coeur d’Alene,” she said.

The pedal-powered vehicle is allowed by city code but requires route approval from city council.

“We support local businesses and understand that these kinds of touristy things go on in other cities, and we think that our citizens will have a lot of fun with it,” Wood said. “(Tour CDA) seems to have really good control in place to make sure that the alcohol is just a side deal. It’s not the main attraction.”

What it’s like to be the only tourist in Moldova, Europe’s least visited country

W henever I think of Moldova (which is not often, to be honest), I am reminded of a message sent by a photographer friend, when he came here a couple of years ago: “Less than a minute after crossing into Moldova I witnessed three horses-and-carts, and a goat on a string. My mobile informed me I was in a ‘Zone D’ worldwide destination, it felt like Zone Z.”

And that’s it in a nutshell: Moldova feels like Zone Z. The last place on Earth you might go to. And if that is your perception of this tiny eastern European state, hidden behind Romania, lost like a silver penny between Eurasia’s geopolitical sofa cushions, then you’re not alone: stats show that Moldova gets fewer tourists per head than any country in Europe .

Why does no one ever come here? What can it possibly be like? Can you get food that isn’t variations of lard?

Well now I’m here, in Moldova’s quaint, crumbly, airy little capital of Chisinau, which is famous for… not much. Its main river, the Byk, is more of a rusty stream at the end of someone’s garden. Parts of it, even near the centre, feel like you could be in deep countryside: horses in yards, more goats on strings. Incredibly, 70 per cent of it was destroyed during 20th-century wars.

The great Russian poet Pushkin was exiled to this balmy corner of the then-Tsarist Empire (there is a sweet little museum dedicated to his short stay) and found its houses “dirty” and “sinful” as he begged to be moved to the more exciting Odessa; though, it should be said, the sinning was mainly his, as he zealously worked his way through the comely Moldovan womenfolk.

And yet, despite all this, Chisinau has real charm. Yes there are post-Soviet tower blocks aplenty, but the people are friendly. The best hotels are plush and good value. The many spick-and-span parks can be delightful. And, as my extrovert guide Natalje shows me, there are al-fresco cafes everywhere, making the most of that dulcet weather.

And the food is not “versions of lard”, it is a vivid and tasty collision between Balkan and Slavic, Russian and Turkish, plus a spicy genius all its own. The richly complex cuisine speaks of Moldova’s intricate history: swapped between empires, conquered by everyone – and they all brought their own recipes. If you want trendy “Chisinau fusion”, try restaurant Divus, it’s properly good; if you want comfort food, have a bowl of Zama, a noodle-meat-umami broth served with sour cream, chilli, pickles and bread; it’s available everywhere and costs mere pennies.

Onwards we go to Moldova’s next selling point: the wine. We’re driving through rolling meadows and woods – little Moldova has no coast, nor mountains – and we’re heading for Cricova. The word Cricova comes from the word “scream” and the legend is that the scream was that of an Orthodox hermit: worried the Ottomans would steal his wine. Happily, the Ottomans failed, because underneath Cricova there are 125 labyrinthine kilometres of limestone mines, now the second biggest wine cellar in the world. The caves are deep underground, and always 14C.

On your breezy golf-cart tour you will see famous private wine collections, a thank you letter from first-man-in-space Yuri Gagarin, and Hermann Goering’s wine stash – retrieved from the Nazi leader’s private train at the end of the Second World War. Some of the tunnels are transformed into spectacular caverns of crystal and neon; at the end you get to buy more wine – white, red, jolly good sparkling – at agreeable prices. As I am wandering the shop, Natalje whisperingly tells me: “In Moldova, we have no taxes on wine. Because wine is food.” In that case, I’m starving.

From here it’s a shortish drive to another famous but very different winery – the posh one, Purcari. This is the brand of wine loved by Queen Victoria and all UK royals since. Their swish chateau-cum-hotel is like something from the Rhone Valley and gazes at its own rustling green vines. The restaurant is excellent – especially the crab ravioli. If you do stay a night, try for the luxe Tower Suite with its mezzanine hot tub, from which you can lie back in capitalist bubbles – as you overlook the USSR.

Yes, the USSR. Next morning Natalje tells me “I must behave,” because “now we are going to the old Soviet Union. No photos of guards!” Climbing in the car, hiding my phone, I watch as we cross into the quasi-independent exclave of Transnistria : a strip of pseudo-nation still loyal to old communist Moscow (and to which the FCDO advises against visiting – see below).

To be frank, it’s less dramatic than I’d hoped. The border guards yawn, the sunlit queue is three minutes long, and then we are in the time-warped Soviet Union, passing the mighty Bendery Fortress – once Ottoman, then Swedish, then Russian, a pivotal place of military history. It’s a good spot for spectacular views, outdoor movies, or a summer swim in a grand bend of the Dniester (but be careful, the waters are fast).

And Transnistria? Yes they do have a statue of Lenin. But they also have a statue of Harry Potter. Yes they have an old T34 Soviet tank, but they also have a boisterous market where you can buy the finest cherries, the freshest herbs, plus pickled tomatoes, smoked river fish, wild camomile honey and cups of cold kvass (weak bread beer) which is oddly refreshing on hot Moldovan days.

For lunch we stop at “Back in the USSR”, a Marxist-themed cafe that, unlike every other theme restaurant in the world, serves excellent grub – particularly the amazing borscht. It costs £2 a bowl, and you eat it while staring at a Bakelite Stalin.

From Transnistira, we head back into central Moldova’s deep history – and Orheiul Vechi. Here in this Edenic vale, full of quaint wooden guesthouses and “nationalised walnut trees” (according to the ever-entertaining Natalje), I eat fresh cherry pie for breakfast. Next to a 19th-century peasant house. Next to a 16th-century cave church. Next to a 14th-century Tatar caravanserai. Next to 3rd-century BC “Geto-Dacian walls”. Next to 20,000-year-old neolithic remains. All made from rocks suffused with 20 million-year-old fossils. I am genuinely surprised it is not Unesco-listed: perhaps, like so much of Moldova, it is simply overlooked.

Last stop, best stop. It’s a humble homestead down by the banks of the Dniester owned by a notably amiable couple called Sergiu and Emilia – and their diverse progeny. After Emilia has shown me, in her Hansel and Gretel kitchen, how to make “Moldova’s smallest sarmale” (delicate cabbage rolls) we think about hiking, boating, cycling or maybe horse riding – which are all available – but as it is gently drizzling, Sergiu takes me to his man cave: a glorious mouldy cellar stuffed with all things fermented, barrelled and distilled, including 118 types of home-made vodka.

Sergiu speaks no English; I speak even less Moldovan, but Sergiu explains – via Natalje – that if we drink enough alcohol this totally won’t matter. Well, it’s gotta be worth a shot. Ahem.

Turns out he’s right. As Sergiu exuberantly offers up shot glasses of mulberry vodka, pine-needle vodka, strawberry vodka, “medicine” vodka, “78 per cent proof” vodka and “at this point I forgot to take notes” vodka, we start chattering away in some special drunken Esperanto before breaking lustily into urgent folk songs, and then at last I stumble home, chuckling, to my rustic wooden chamber – and when I wake up I can hear cocks crowing, donkeys coughing and Sergiu’s extended family. On the sunny balcony, Emilia is serving warm home-made bread: with rosehip jam and fresh cottage cheese. 

And as I sit there nursing a mild hangover and good strong coffee, staring at the silvery mist rising from the Dniester, Sergiu comes up and shakes my hand and gives me a free bottle of the raspberry vodka. Which was apparently my favourite (my memory is hazy). And as he does this I think: what a nice guy, what a nice family and what a nice country. Because it is true: absolutely everyone I have met on this trip has been lovely and that is something truly special.

In a world where tourists are increasingly shunned, heckled, taxed, cursed and processed industrially through sterile resorts, Moldova is a place where they welcome you with delight, because they get so few tourists, and because they really want to see you. Put it another way, visiting Moldova is like going home to the warm and funny family you forgot you had. Fantastic.
