Singapore Grand Prix has long been one of the highlights of the Formula 1 racing calendar for many years. Lenny Kravitz is set to hold his first-ever performance in Singapore after the Formula 1 race on Sunday. Plus, American band OneRepublic is set to light up the Marina Bay Street Circuit, and Kylie returns to the Circuit in what is set to be another unmissable performance following her 2016 show in front of 50,000 fans at the Padang Stage.

FROM HIGH-OCTANE THRILLS TO JETSET GLAMOUR: THIS IS FORMULA 1
Before you race off to book your Grand Prix holiday, let’s get you into gear with a little Grand Prix history. We’ll keep things brief, otherwise we’d be here all day. Nevertheless, here are the instances and incidents that have defined how Grand Prix came to be...
The Grand Prix has its roots in newspaper owner James Gordon Bennet Jr, who established the Gordon Bennett Cup in Europe in 1900, an annual race that brought in drivers from all over the world, with each country allowed to enter up to three cars.
Inspired by the Gordon Bennett Cup, and other similar races that popped up across the US, the first race to carry the Grand Prix name was organised by the Automobile Club de France in 1906. Running over two days in June, the race consisted of six 65-mile laps, each of which took an hour to complete due to the primitive form and function of cars back then. Of the 32 entries, Hungarian Ferenc Szisz won the race in his Renault.
It’s worth noting that all competing cars also had a mechanic on board. Only the mechanics and the driver themselves were allowed to work on the cars during the race. Good news, since the roads were also incredibly bumpy, and wheel repairs were a regular occurrence.
Similar races would then take place in the likes of Brooklands, England; Indianapolis, USA; and Monza, Italy. Though using the Grand Prix name, these were not part of a formal championship.
This changed in 1924 when a series of national motor clubs joined forces to form the Association Internationale des Automobile Clubs Reconnus (AIACR). The number of races bearing the Grand Prix name skyrocketed, going from five events in 1927 to eighteen in 1934.
In 1933, the Monaco Grand Prix saw the starting grid determined by timed qualifiers instead of being randomly selected. Competing vehicles were also painted in international Formula One colours.
A formalised Grand Prix consisting of races in a number of countries became an institution in 1935 and were held every year until the onset of WWII in 1939.
Following the War, only four races with the Grand Prix name were held. It’s here that rules for a Grand Prix World Championship began to take shape.
At the end of the 1949 season, it was announced that going forward several national Grand Prix would be combined. This marked the start of Formula One as we know it today.
In 1950, the first World Championship race was held on 13 May at the UK’s Silverstone racetrack.

Singapore GP data: Two clear winners from Friday running as shock team emerges
McLaren, Ferrari and VCARB looked particularly impressive on the first day of running in Singapore.
Friday’s Free Practice at Singapore’s Marina Bay Circuit has left two clear winners ahead of qualifying and the race. McLaren and Ferrari are the two teams to beat this weekend while Red Bull struggled as expected and a surprise team emerges in the midfield.
Friday’s running at the Singapore GP was uneventful for the teams. FP2 was the session that left the most representative data to analyse as the temperatures and track conditions will be the most similar to what the drivers will face in qualifying and the race.
Singapore GP data: McLaren or Ferrari, Ferrari or McLaren? That is the question.
Lando Norris finished P1 in Friday’s FP2 session. The McLaren driver broke the ‘red’ domination at this circuit last season. Ferrari had dominated every session since 2023, including FP1 earlier on Friday. Still, the gap between Norris and Charles Leclerc in FP2 was minimal.
As we can see, up to the middle of Sector 2 the delta – approximate calculation of the difference between the two cars on the same lap – between the two cars is practically nil. However, we can appreciate a slightly better corner entry of the MCL38 over the SF-24, which seems to be a more stable car in general terms on street circuits.
Leclerc was +0.058s slower than Norris. However, the McLaren driver had a small correction on the exit of the tricky Turn 17 which cost him some time. The delta could have been slightly higher.
Red Bull gets lost and Mercedes plays the clueless game
It’s going to be a particularly tricky weekend for Red Bull and Mercedes as the early data and timesheets show. The Milton Keynes team is off the pace and will struggle to even get into Q3 as they did last year.
Mercedes on the other hand also looks very lost. Although their problems should not be as serious as they have been on Friday.
The Brackley team should, as in Baku, be in a position to be third and fight for solid points at Marina Bay. Their Sector 1 and Sector 2 data is promising.

VCARB emerges as the big surprise for this weekend
After several races out of the spotlight with a midfield led alternately by Williams, Haas and Aston Martin, VCARB is set to be the big surprise of the weekend.
Although it is true that it is always rumoured in the paddock that they are the team that uses less fuel in their long runs on Friday and that they always run with a more aggressive engine map than the rest, the data of Yuki Tsunoda and Daniel Ricciardo are particularly good.
With some margin over their rivals, they were the third best team on the grid this Friday.
Was it just a one-day thing or will they be able to maintain this momentum in qualifying and the race? With Daniel Ricciardo’s future hanging in the balance, perhaps this is the Australian’s best chance to make a statement if a decision has not yet been made that will affect his continuity in Formula 1 beyond Singapore.
The infamous wall at the exit of Turn 17: key for qualifying
Throughout the day, we have seen many drivers brushing and even slightly impacting the wall on the exit of the tricky turn 17. The best examples of this were Oscar Piastri and Franco Colapinto pushing their cars to the limit.
Tomorrow, with everyone pushing hard for the last thousandth of a second to make the difference, any touch with the wall could be lethal. But not only for the one who touches the wall, but also for those drivers who are in a flying lap and have to lift the throttle because of a yellow flag or a red flag.
Teams cannot sleep and will have to set a competitive lap from the first attempt in Q1. After what happened to Lando Norris in Azerbaijan, the teams should take note of this circumstance which has been repeated several times today in order to take precautions for qualifying.
Long runs: tyre variety and many laps in traffic
The long runs of FP2 were marked by many irregularities. The drivers encountered traffic and that didn’t allow them to do extensive running with very representative data. Filtering the laps, the following data was obtained:
McLaren is the only team in the ‘Big 4’ to have tested two different tyres with its drivers. Lando Norris used the soft tyre for his long run and Oscar Piastri the medium tyre. Meanwhile, Ferrari and Mercedes opted for the medium compound and Red Bull used the hard tyre.

NEWS STORY 20/09/2024
Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz were always front runners, first and third in the first session and second and third in the evening one, held under floodlights. The SF-24 performed well with both drivers who evaluated all three Pirelli compounds, as they worked in both qualifying and race trim.
The cars went out on track for the first session at 17.30 with Charles and Carlos each running a set of Hards while they refamiliarized themselves with the track. They then pitted to switch to Soft tyres, improving their times to 1'31"763 for Charles, the best lap of the session, while the Spaniard managed a 1'31"952, good enough for third. In the latter part of the session, both drivers reverted to the tyres used at the start, running a heavy fuel load. Charles completed 26 laps, Carlos 27 for a team total of 53.
The session got underway at 21.00 with the track floodlights turned on, as Charles and Carlos set off on Medium tyres before switching to Softs with which Leclerc went second quickest in 1'30"785 and Carlos posted the third best time of 1'31"356. With half the session remaining they both went back to the Medium tyres used at the start, taking on a heavier fuel load to run in race trim. Leclerc did 28 laps and Sainz did 27, for a total of 55 laps.
Overnight, with the teams still at work on European time, to avoid jet lag, the team will analyse all today's data to ensure it gets all the performance out of the SF-24 package, especially with an eye on qualifying, which is so important at this track. Tomorrow's grid deciding session takes place at 21.00 local time (15.00 CEST) after the third and final hour of free practice at 17.30 (11.30 CEST).
Charles Leclerc: The car felt good, but there's still some work ahead of us to get it to feel exactly as I want it to. It was a good starting point, now we have to find the right balance and put it all together in qualifying tomorrow.
The weather forecast for the rest of the weekend is changeable, so we will have to adapt very quickly. I would be surprised to see the same gap behind us again tomorrow, it will be interesting to see if the pecking order will change.
Carlos Sainz: It's been a challenging start to the weekend to be honest. Already in FP1 I could feel there was something not quite right with the brakes and we seemed to carry that into FP2, so I struggled to get the most out of the two sessions.
Other than that, the car seems to be in a good window. I'm confident that we can figure out what happened today and make a big step tomorrow.

Lewis Hamilton: Mercedes 'a bit lost' with car at Singapore GP and expresses Q3 qualifying concern
Lewis Hamilton predicts a struggle to make Q3 if Mercedes are unable to rectify their poor Friday form; George Russell crashed at the end of second practice; watch Singapore GP Qualifying live on Sky Sports F1 at 2pm on Saturday, and the race at 1pm on Sunday

Lewis Hamilton admitted Mercedes are "just a bit lost" with their car after a "very challenging" start to the Singapore GP weekend which has left him concerned about whether they will make the grid's top 10 in qualifying on Saturday.
With Mercedes aiming to hit back on the streets of Marina Bay following a difficult Baku relative to the front-runners last week, when Hamilton in particular endured a tough weekend after an engine penalty left him starting the race at the back of the field, the team's drivers both struggled with a misbehaving W15 on Friday.
Hamilton finished both sessions outside of the top 10 and while team-mate George Russell fared a little better in the more representative floodlit running to take seventh, his Practice Two ended with a late crash into the barriers.

"The car feels very difficult. A very challenging day," said Hamilton after finishing 11th fastest and 0.982s off the pace set by McLaren's Lando Norris.
"We tried everything set-up wise and nothing seems to work with the set-up. Definitely very challenging.

"We are giving it everything then you find out you are a second off. Ultimately, just a bit lost. Not really sure where to put the car."
Asked about whether set-up changes made to the car between the two practice sessions had made any difference, Hamilton replied: "No. We tried a lot and achieved the same thing."

And on the evidence of Friday's form without improvement, Hamilton predicted: "At the moment we won't be going into Q3."
Russell: We have a lot of work on our hands
Although he may have finished slightly closer to the front, Russell reported similar issues and concerns to Hamilton at the end of the session.
Asked about the crash in the closing moments of P2 which saw him nose the barrier and damage the front of his car at Turn Eight, Russell said: "Not a lot to say, really. Locked up, took the front wing off.
"It was a really challenging Friday for us.
"We were really off the pace; we need to understand why that is. I'm sure we'll find some answers.
What's happened to Mercedes' Singapore pace from 2023?
Sky Sports F1's Anthony Davidson: “It’s a very different car compared to last year. There was more compliance naturally built in and they could run the car a bit higher and found its performance that way. “Different cars will have different strengths and weaknesses. "This is a unique track. Very different to Baku, even though they are both street circuits. Here you are on maximum downforce and Monaco-style wings.”
"We've made some big changes from FP1 into FP2 but the car's just not really feeling that well connected as it was this time 12 months ago and in recent races, so we need to try and get to the bottom of it."
Although Mercedes did outpace struggling Red Bull, they themselves finished behind both RB cars - the team which proved the day's surprise package - while the gap to the lead McLaren and Ferrari cars was large.
"There are a lot of surprises out there," said Russell, who crashed out late on while chasing victory in last year's Singapore race after qualifying on the front row.

"The VCARB [RB] is really quick, the Williams is really quick. The Red Bulls seem to be off the pace.
"There seems to be a big gap to the McLarens and the Ferraris so as a minimum we hope to be between that midfield gap and the front four. But right now we have got a lot of work on our hands."
