When the Rolling Stones Closed Their 2022 Tour

rolling stones tour 2023 berlin

Ronnie Wood and Keith Richards hug it out during “Paint it Black,” Aug. 3, 2022

When the Rolling Stones closed their 2022 tour on August 3 in Berlin, Germany, two months after it opened on June 1 in Madrid, Spain, Mick Jagger told the crowd that it was the last night of “our European tour.” Perhaps it was optimism on our part, but it implied that there would be more dates to come elsewhere. Finally, on New Year’s Eve, the Stones posted a “Happy New Year” message on their social media platforms. The key words in the very brief note are “See you in 2023!!”

Though no further details were offered, there would be no question that they would perform again. And sure enough, on Nov. 21, 2023, the band announced their “Hackney Diamonds” 2024 North American tour. The 2022 edition was named “Sixty” to mark the band’s 60th anniversary and was limited to 14 concerts, all in Europe and the U.K. (The band’s previous tour was the 2021 U.S. edition of their “No Filter” tour – held entirely in the U.S. and first without Charlie Watts.)

Wishing you all a very happy New Year! 🎉💥 See you in 2023!! 👅 pic.twitter.com/hBwGwWpzmt — The Rolling Stones (@RollingStones) December 31, 2022

2022’s closing night concert, at Berlin’s Waldbühne, featured 19 songs, including two that made their tour debut, “All Down the Line” and “Fool to Cry.” Watch them and other clips below.

The Stones’ tour schedule offers them many days off in between shows, and for good reason. For the 2022 run, Jagger turned 79. Keith Richards was 78. Ronnie Wood turned 75 on opening night. They were joined, once again, by drummer Steve Jordan, Darryl Jones (bass), Chuck Leavell (piano/organ), Karl Denson (sax), Tim Ries (sax) Matt Clifford (keyboards), and Bernard Fowler/Sasha Allen (backing vocals).

As the lights dimmed, a brief video montage of Watts appeared on the giant screens.

And when the tribute ended, there were the Stones , kicking things off with “Street Fighting Man.”

The greatest Rock'n'Roll Band of this planet!

The Rolling Stones: Berlin, Waldbühne

August 3, 2022 – it’s the waldbühne again.

Yes indeed, here we are: at the final stop of the European SIXTY Tour of the Rolling Stones!

Well, once again it can be savely said, that they blew everyone’s mind and expectations – 3 lads in their late 70ies once again defined, what Rock ‘n’ Roll is all about – sinister lyrics, mean ( and LOUD) guitars, a production on highest levels (sound, lights) but as for the music: you still hear every wrong note or misled chord in the honest and raw mix. That’s it, folks.

And that’s what we have to expect for tonight’s finale – maybe some surprise song which they haven’t done since long? But at least, we’ll get what this band stands for: hand made custom Rock’n’Roll… ALL DOWN THE LINE:

The Rolling Stones have announced their return to Europe this summer, including two huge, flagship shows at London’s Hyde Park. The itinerary embraces 14 shows in ten countries under the title SIXTY , to mark the mighty band’s 60th anniversary in 2022.

The new touring extravaganza, produced by Concerts West/AEG Presents, will open in Madrid on June 1, and the schedule has the Stones returning to the UK, including their first-ever concert at Anfield, the famous home of Liverpool Football Club, on July 9. This is also the band’s first show in that city for more than 50 years.

The tour marks the first live appearances by the peerless rockers since those on the first legs of their No Filter tour in 2017 and 2018. The announcement of the shows is further marked by the unveiling of a vibrant new version of the Stones’ famous tongue and lips logo for the tour, created by award-winning British designer Mark Norton.

How Queen’s Debut Album Proved Be An Auspicious Entry In Their History

As on the resumption of that No Filter tour with new American dates between September and November last year, the band will feature Steve Jordan on drums, who took over following the death of Charlie Watts in August. Those shows sold more than half a million tickets. Tickets for the new tour go on sale at 10am Friday 18th March.

In addition to countless trademark hits, the Stones will also be presenting European fans with some surprises each night from their vast catalog. The spectacular new SIXTY production will include a massive stage, cutting edge lighting and state of the art video design.

Of the upcoming London shows, Jim King, CEO of European Festivals at AEG Presents, says: “Whenever Hyde Park is mentioned, it’s impossible not to think of The Rolling Stones. Two nights on June 25th and July 3rd cap off an incredible line up for BST Hyde Park 2022 but nobody brings it like the Stones when they’re on home turf in London.”

No group embodies classic rock like The Rolling Stones. Over its six-decade career, the legendary band has defined rock ‘n’ roll with fun, energetic music rooted in the blues. Though new music genres come and go, The Rolling Stones’ simple, punchy rock sound has appealed to every new generation.

However, the band didn’t become a phenom overnight. The Rolling Stones started to build its music career before its official debut in 1962. It all began with rhythm guitarist/vocalist and frontman Mick Jagger and lead guitarist Keith Richards. The pair met when they were young while attending primary school together. Eventually, they drifted apart and encountered each other again by chance 10 years later. Thanks to their mutual friend Dick Taylor, Jagger and Richards discovered their collective love of music.

Soon enough, the three joined several bands, shaping their creative talents and honing their instrumental skills. After sparking interest among many local fans and new listeners, the group gained new members like rhythm guitarist Brian Jones, keyboardist Ian Stewart, and drummer Charlie Watts.

When 1962 arrived, Bill Wyman took Dick Taylor’s spot as bassist. The group’s success grew throughout the UK, especially with the help of tracks like “I Wanna Be Your Man” written by The Beatles. Paul McCartney and John Lennon exclusively penned the popular song and let The Rolling Stones elevate its rising reputation. Before releasing its self-titled debut album in 1964, The Rolling Stones landed chart spots in both the UK and U.S. The band was well on its way to becoming a household name.

As The Rolling Stones’ discography grew, so did the band’s popularity. Records like The Rolling Stones No. 2, 12 x 5, and The Rolling Stones, Now! laid a sturdy foundation for a future in music. However, the international smash “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction” proved the band was here to stay. It sat comfortably on charts across the globe, including the U.S. Billboard Hot 100. Ultimately, it cleared the way for The Rolling Stones’ next studio album, Out of Our Heads.

The Rolling Stones followed up every big hit with even more renewed vigor. It dominated the 60s thanks to numerous studio albums and certified chart-topping singles like “Paint It Black,” Ruby Tuesday,” and “Mother’s Little Helper.” Then, it took over the 70s and 80s with a signature image and sound. The Rolling Stones stayed relevant and influential in the ever-changing music climate. As the band evolved, bandmates rotated in and out, resulting in the induction of newer members such as bassist and guitarist Ronnie Wood.

As rock music changed, The Rolling Stones never lost its spark. Adaptation and evolution were crucial in helping the group keep up with the times. Over the years, it constantly reinvented itself without straying from its original roots: fast-paced, energetic rock ‘n’ roll. The Rolling Stones continued to take over every era, including the current music scene. Its most recent LP Tattoo You hit the stands in 2021 and reminded the world the group was still going strong.

Although it faced many challenges, the band has remained true to loyal listeners and provided stellar shows across the globe. Numerous sold-out tours, live TV performances, and more allow fans to witness Jagger’s eccentric yet boisterous on-stage persona. Backed up by his friends and talented bandmates, the group provides a polished experience for every dedicated concertgoer. The Rolling Stones still tours today, with no signs of stopping.

Sixteen hours after I left my house, and 50 years after forming as a band, The Rolling Stones took the gigantic stage at 9:30pm. The empty seats filled in quickly once Sheeran had taken his leave. At 50,000 strong, it was quite a site to see the crowd on their feet as the Stones kicked off their 3rd performance at Arrowhead Stadium (their first was ’75, their latest was in ’89) with “Start Me Up” from Tattoo You. The song is over 30 years old, but was nothing more than a baby when compared to most of the set list. “It’s Only Rock ‘n Roll” and “Tumbling Dice” set the precedent for a show that would include mostly material from before I was born. “Doom And Gloom” was the exception to the rule, but served to prove that even a mediocre song can be more than magnificent in the right hands. If I’m being honest, the main reason I was seeing The Rolling Stones was to check them off my list of legends. I had heard stories, but I couldn’t wrap my head around that fact that a bunch of 70-year-olds could still put on an epic show. Sure, the giant screens and incredible soundsystem and fireworks were to be expected, I even figured they would sound pretty good, but nothing prepared me for how animated they would be. Mick Jagger was a diva less than half his age as he strutted his shit up and down the catwalk. Wardrobe changes, grabbing phones from the crowd to take selfies, reminiscing about things that happened back in ’74…he was on point the entire night. - See more at: http://ilistensoyoudonthaveto.com/2015/07/01/the-rolling-stones-arrowhead-stadium-06-27-15/#sthash.hANemdD3.dpuf

"I know it's only Rock and Roll but I like it". The Rolling Stones "live in concert" is an experience not to be missed. From the moment, Mick, Keith and the rest of Stones hit the stage until the final note of the encore - any room - no matter what size - will be filled with an energy level that is unparalleled!

No two concerts are ever the same when it comes to the "Greatest Rock and Roll Band in the world". If you have not yet seen the Rolling Stones I encourage you to do so. I loved seeing the Rolling Stones when growing up in Toronto - at every possible venue in the Stones "home away from home".

Each tour would feature band rehearsals at places like the Toronto airport hanger or at a local Bayview North Toronto school. Many a Stones tour would kick off in Toronto at Maple Leaf Gardens, CNE Stadium, Skydome and Air Canada Centre among others. Heck, when Keith Richards was busted in Toronto - he was sentenced to perform a charity concert for the CNIB in Oshawa.

I have most of the Rolling Stones catalogue of music and DVDs and have thoroughly enjoyed the groups who have played in an opening capacity with the Stones. They helped introduce us to Ike and Tina Turner, Stevie Wonder, George Thorogood and the Destroyers and the White Stripes among others! You will never go wrong buying a Stones concert ticket. Make sure you do before it is too late.

Hi there. The Rolling Stones in Prague the best show ever. The concert was absolutely amazing, fantastic, super great. The performance of the Rolling stones is in the highest quality, they are the living legend,I love them for ever and wish to all of them the best off everything. Thank you for unforgettable experience. So this was about the show, but I would like to tell you my worst nightmare I also had just before the concert. I bought three tickets from Viagogo office and to my horror I find out that the tickets were not valid and they were not in database. I paid 23.000KC.So to get to the event I've had to buy another three tickets for standing. THERE WAS MORE fans off the Rolling stones with some experience. I don't what to do about the matter. So this was MY best experience and the worst. Yours Luda Horakova Krasicka 53 Prostejov Czech republic .

It doesn't matter where you sit at a Stones show, it's going to be memorable. This was my first time seeing them, much of my family have seen them multiple times. Heinz Field is an ok venue. Being so far back, the sound was just a smidge off but the atmosphere was still awesome. It rained heavily most of the day but by some great fortune, the clouds parted and the weather was perfect right before showtime. The blazed through hit after hit, with fireworks and lights and spectacle. The best thing, however, is how much Mick Jagger moves and his dancing and prancing. The dude is 72 and still has all the energy and charisma he had back in the day. It's insane. I defy anyone who can find a better showman and frontman than Mick Jagger. Keith, Ronnie, Charlie and the backing band were all incendiary. 10/10 would see them again.

It was a wonderful concert! My group and I had so much fun! Although we were not so close to the stage, thanks to the 3 gigantic screens it was possible to enjoy the concert fully. Mick Jagger has so much energy!!! They not only played most of their best songs, but invited Juanes ( one of the most famous Colombian singers to play guitarr and sing one song together with Mick. The public went crazy! At the end also invited the Javeriana Chorus (also Colombian) to sing with the group. Great!

They started the concert with Jumping Jack Flash and then played as second a song picked by the colombian public in the internet. I found that very good.

My group and I flew from Venezuela to Bogotá for the concert

The Rolling Stones rock!!!!!

LOVED IT!!!!

I've seen several live performance by the Stones on TV and while I have been amazed by their energy levels considering their ages, I also have thought at times that their performances were lacking a bit. Boy, was I wrong after seeing them live at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City! Mick Jagger melted my face off with his energy, cockiness (man, does he strut!) and powerful vocals. They were on-point for the entire show, and I thought it was cool that they brought opener Ed Sheeran onstage as well. As a 30-something male, The Rolling Stones have always been on my bucket list, and I'm glad I had a chance to see them in person. I would definitely recommend their show and would go see them again. Hopefully they keep on rocking another 10-15 years!

The doors opened at 4:45pm ( late by 45 mins). Support act ( Richard Ashcroft) didn’t come on till 7pm and played for 45 minutes and they were really good. Stones came on at 8:15pm and played till 10:30. Utterly amazing, Mick Jagger can put on a show! The rest of the guys do look really, really old. I felt for Charlie Watts he looked sore..

However, £5.20 for a can of Tennats lager ( 89p in Morrisons) come on Murrayfield, you made a mental load of money. I’ve never seen so many pissed people at a concert, but enjoying themselves.

Other reviews suggested they set was 22 songs, I counted 19 so don’t know if we were short changed because of the 1030 curfew. Great concert, T shirts £30 come on guys ...

The Rolling Stones concert was absolutely amazing. The singing, the music, the lighting, the fireworks and those large screens were great. They strutted their stuff through all the favourite numbers and some other great songs. Before you go, read the list of items not allowed inside the concert because you will lose them. Handbags larger than A5 size not allowed, including bumbags, cameras and camera bags, to name a few. All in All, everything went very smoothly, everyone loved it and we all had an amazing night, never to be forgotten.

The greatest rock n roll band in the world - No doubt about it. Mick, Keef, Charlie and Ronnie were sensational. From the opening Street Fighting Man to the encores of Gimme Shelter and Satisfaction they were as great as ever. Mick was the imperious frontman, Keith the axe wielding lunatic, Charlie the rock upon which the driving rhythms of Paint it Black are built, Ronnie the joker whose rhythm guitar convinces you the Stones play the devil’s music. Sensational just sensational. It was a privilege to be there.

As The Associated Press’ music writer, Maria Sherman has seen more than 40 concerts during the first half of 2024. Here are some picks for the best shows ... so far, excluding any one-off performances that cannot be repeated , and where you too can catch these artists.

Bad Bunny, “The Most Wanted Tour”

March 14, Los Angeles’ Crypto.com Arena

Bad Bunny’s show begins with a symphony, transitioning into the unmistakable strings of his monster hit, “Monaco.” “The Most Wanted Tour” highlights El Conejo Malo’s fifth solo album “Nadie Sabe Lo Que Va a Pasar Mañana” (“Nobody Knows What Will Happen Tomorrow”) and his past reggaetón hits, too.

HIGHLIGHT: There is one moment that can only be described as equine.

OPENER: When you’re one of the biggest artists on the planet, do you really need an opener? Bad Bunny didn’t.

SEE IT YOURSELF: This particular run of shows has come to an end, but here’s a reminder to catch him next time he’s in town.

Image

Olivia Rodrigo, “GUTS World Tour”

April 5, New York’s Madison Square Garden

Rodrigo’s spirited punky-pop warms an arena, as does her irreverent charms and Disney-informed dancing. If women performing their rage has fallen out of vogue, Rodrigo has brought it back , full force.

Image

HIGHLIGHT: For the fans of her big-hearted ballads — in one moment, she’s lifted into the air and circles the arena in a purple crescent moon to slow things down.

OPENER: The Breeders — fronted by the Pixies’ Kim Deal — legends of ’90s college radio and indie rock. There’s something completist about hearing an arena discover “Cannonball” for the first time, a song that no doubt inspired Rodrigo’s music.

SEE IT YOURSELF: Rodrigo heads back to the U.S. this month with a new opener, the U.K. hyperpop producer PinkPantheress , before the Breeders return for two final nights in Los Angeles.

Brutalismus 3000, “AMERIKATRÄUME”

April 11, New York’s Knockdown Center

Every generation gets the Crystal Castles it deserves. Or in less niche language: This Berlin duo brings humor to their music, which veers from hyperactive techno to German Neue Deutsche Welle in their acquired-taste electronica. The shows are sweaty, and no matter your age, you will be the oldest person in attendance.

HIGHLIGHT: The duo samples Dido’s soft-pop hit “White Flag,” while waving a white flag. It works.

OPENER: The techno-punk LustSickPuppy, whose abrasive rave music is presented as a kind of nightmarish clown show.

SEE IT YOURSELF: Brutalismus will be hitting a few festivals in Europe this summer and fall.

Nicki Minaj, “Pink Friday 2 World Tour”

May 1, New York’s Barclays Center

She will run on club time, and she will not disappoint. Nicki Minaj’s “Pink Friday 2” is almost a retrospective of her chart-toppers, shifting alter-egos with incredible ease.

HIGHLIGHT: At this particular show, Minaj brought out Cyndi Lauper to duet “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun” after 1 a.m.

OPENER: Monica has joined Minaj for this tour, and in Brooklyn, Pepa of Salt-N-Pepa opened the show.

SEE IT YOURSELF: Minaj is hitting the European festival circuit this summer, then heading back to the U.S. in September.

Image

Sum 41, “Tour of the Setting Sum”

May 6, New York’s Brooklyn Paramount

Canadian pop-punk band Sum 41 has called it quits — and they’re going out in a blaze of glory, a farewell tour that has the immediacy of their youth.

HIGHLIGHT: Sum 41 does not want to exit quietly — they prove their endurance with an explosive set, fireworks and mosh pits and all. There’s also a giant, blow-up skull.

OPENER: The Interrupters, a ska-punk band that revitalized the genre, are worth arriving early for. At future dates, Sum 41 will be joined by Gob, Pup, Neck Deep and the Bronx.

SEE IT YOURSELF: Sum 41 is zigzagging across Europe and North America through early 2025.

Image

Deryck Whibley of Sum 41 performs during Sonic Temple Art and Music Festival on Friday, May 17, 2024, at Historic Crew Stadium in Columbus, Ohio. (Photo by Amy Harris/Invision/AP, File)

Megan Thee Stallion, “Hot Girl Summer Tour”

May 21, Madison Square Garden

Not every artist can sell out Madison Square Garden on her first tour, but Megan Thee Stallion is not every artist. On her stage, Megan is an athlete and a dancer who delivers her fierce bars with an incredible crispness.

HIGHLIGHT: “WAP” is a can’t miss moment, of course — particularly if Cardi B makes a surprise appearance, like she did at MSG.

OPENER: Tennessee rapper GloRilla, who was most recently featured on the great, braggy “Accent” from the headliner’s third album, “Megan.”

SEE IT YOURSELF: Europe will get to catch her in July, before she heads back home for a few festivals.

Image

The Rolling Stones, “Stones Tour ’24 Hackney Diamonds”

May 23, East Rutherford, New Jersey’s MetLife Stadium

The Rolling Stones ran through 60 years of hits across two hours, including cuts from their first album of new material in nearly two decades, “Hackney Diamonds.”

HIGHLIGHT: When it comes to The Rolling Stones, the entire show is the highlight — but for this audience, it was likely the rollicking rendition of “Wild Horses.”

OPENER: The soulful Jon Batiste , an award-show staple for a reason.

SEE IT YOURSELF: The Stones’ North American tour continues through July.

Image

Ronnie Wood, from left, Mick Jagger, Steve Jordan, and Keith Richards of The Rolling Stones perform during the “Hackney Diamonds” tour at Soldier Field on Thursday, June 27, 2024, in Chicago. (Photo by Rob Grabowski/Invision/AP, File)

George Strait

June 8, MetLife Stadium

They call him the King of Country for a reason. Live, George Strait can transform his one-off stadium shows into a honky-tonk; he performs with a big band and a lot of heart.

HIGHLIGHT: The closest a person can get to levitation is singing along to “Amarillo by Morning” in a stadium of tens of thousands.

OPENER: Chris Stapleton and Little Big Town, with Stapleton joining Strait for a new song called “Honky Tonk Hall of Fame.”

SEE IT YOURSELF: Strait has a two more stadium dates in July — in Detroit and Chicago — and another in December, in Las Vegas.

Image

Governors Ball: Chappell Roan, Sexyy Red, SZA, Peso Pluma

June 7-9, New York’s Flushing Meadows Corona Park

Summer festivals across the United States tend to have similar lineups. Governors Ball, arriving early in the season, sets the tone.

HIGHLIGHT: Now is the time to run, don’t walk, to see Chappell Roan . And learn the “Hot to Go” dance.

OPENER: Sexyy Red’s frisky rap is hard to deny.

SEE IT YOURSELF: Many of these artists will be hitting festivals in North American and Europe this summer. In fact, if you want to catch SZA, Sexyy Red and Chappell Roan in one go, consider Lollapalooza in August. Pluma is currently on his “Éxodo Tour” across North America, running through October.

Feb. 18, Melbourne, Australia’s Northcote Social Club

In the search for thrilling, cathartic underground music — particularly of the indie variety — look no further than the rich scene of Melbourne, Australia. CLAMM, the punk trio, brings a controlled aggression to their live show. It is ferocious noise punk that hits like inhaling hand sanitizer — stinging alert their audience with clever agitation.

HIGHLIGHT: Later this month, CLAMM will release a new record, “Disembodiment.” Live, they’ve begun performing the chant-along opening cut, “Change Enough.”

OPENER: At this particular show, the Aussie indie band Scott and Charlene’s Wedding and the rapper Mulalo. A genre-diverse club show is a life-affirming club show.

SEE IT YOURSELF: CLAMM are headed to Europe for a series of dates this July, and back to Australia in August.

Queens of the Stone Age cancels eight shows so Josh Homme can have emergency surgery

Josh Homme in a printed vest and white T-shirt.

Queens of the Stone Age has paused its European tour so that lead singer Josh Homme could immediately return to the U.S. for emergency surgery.

“Every effort was made to push through and play for you, but it is no longer an option to continue,” the alt-rock band said Tuesday in a post on social media, confirming the cancellation of eight additional shows this summer.

Josh Homme of Queens Of The Stone Age performs at The O2 Arena on November 15, 2023 in London, England.

His music is still hard as nails. But nowadays, Josh Homme loves a good cry

The Queens of the Stone Age frontman has recently survived cancer, the deaths of close friends and a protracted custody battle. The result? ‘A flood of emotion.’

Dec. 12, 2023

“Queens are gutted we aren’t able to play for you. We apologize for any inconvenience and share in your frustration and disappointment,” the post said.

The band — whose other members are guitarist Troy Van Leeuwen, bassist Michael Shuman, keyboardist Dean Fertita and drummer Jon Theodore — will no longer perform at festivals in France and Slovakia this week due to the singer-guitarist’s departure. Shows in Berlin, Austria, Romania, Croatia and Greece have also been canceled, according to the announcement, which directed ticket holders to visit their respective festival websites for more information. Ticket holders for the band’s headliner shows will be contacted directly from their point of purchase, the post said.

Last Friday, the “No One Knows” and “The Way You Used to Do” band canceled its appearance at Italy’s AMA Festival “due to illness,” although it did not indicate in the announcement who had fallen ill. As of Wednesday, dates for August shows in Europe and shows in North America, which are scheduled through November, are still listed on the Queens of the Stone Age website .

A spokesperson for the group did not immediately respond Wednesday to The Times’ request for additional comment.

BURBANK, CA - OCTOBER 3, 2019 - - Drummer Stella Mozgawa, from left, of the band Warpaint, Josh Homme, with Queens of the Stone Age and drummer Carla Azar, of Autolux, right, contributed to the latest, “Desert Sessions,” album. They were photographed at the Pink Duck Studios in Burbank on October 3, 2019. Dormant since 2004, Desert Sessions is a recording project led by Josh Homme with a series of albums featuring collaborations with the likes of PJ Harvey, Ween, Mark Lanegan and many others in a small studio way out in the desert of Joshua Tree. Homme is about to release the first new Desert Sessions album in 15 years on Oct. 25, and includes songs recorded with Mozgawa, Azar, Billy Gibbons of ZZ Top and Les Claypool, among others. (Genaro Molina / Los Angeles Times)

After 16 years, Josh Homme rekindles the ‘Desert Sessions’: ‘This will outlast everything I do’

The Queens of the Stone Age leader gathered ZZ Top’s Billy Gibbons and Primus’ Les Claypool, among others, and headed out to Joshua Tree for improv and mayhem.

Oct. 23, 2019

Homme, 51, who grew up and started his music career in Palm Desert, was diagnosed with cancer in 2022 but said that he had recovered after undergoing surgery. It’s unclear if his recent emergency surgery is related, as no specifics about the emergency procedure were given.

After starting the pioneering stoner-metal group Kyuss in the mid-1990s, Homme broke out in 2001 with the Queens of the Stone Age album “Rated R.” He has also played with the Eagles of Death Metal and supergroup Them Crooked Vultures, and produced albums by Iggy Pop and Arctic Monkeys, and is known for embracing the avant-garde .

Last summer, Queens of the Stone Age released “In Times New Roman...,” its long-awaited eighth studio album. The group’s first LP in six years reflected on the tumultuous years in which Homme lost several close friends, including Foo Fighters’ Taylor Hawkins , Mark Lanegan of Screaming Trees and actor and bar owner Rio Hackford .

Homme also was embroiled in a contentious custody battle— complete with restraining orders — over his three children with his ex-wife, Brody Dalle. He and Dalle, lead singer for the Distillers, divorced in 2019 after about 15 years of marriage and amid allegations of alcoholism, drug abuse and domestic violence. Then, after completing the QOTSA album but before its June 2023 release, Homme was diagnosed with cancer.

Times pop music critic Mikael Wood contributed to this report.
