Top things to see and do in Mighty Peace

Explore terrific landscapes in this beautiful area.

The Peace River as seen from the Cotillion Recreation Area.

The Peace River, one of Canada’s mightiest, is named for a treaty between two First Nations. But these days this silver ribbon flowing through northern Alberta represents a peaceful place to visit for travellers who want to explore its stunning landscapes.

There’s plenty to see and do in Mighty Peace, a region of the province that has some of Alberta’s oldest communities. Here are just a few of the highlights. For more information, check www.mightypeace.com

1) Park your rig alongside the Peace River

There are several campgrounds in the Mighty Peace region where you can stay right on the banks of the river. Perhaps one of the most interesting is at Dunvegan Provincial Park, where a suspension bridge provides one of the few highway river crossings. There is a living history museum on site and campers can also walk to the nearby market gardens.

2) Drive the Mackenzie Highway

Mile zero of this legendary stretch of road is at Grimshaw, Alberta. Check with the visitor’s centre for information about this northern route which links Alberta and the Northwest Territories and is named after famed explorer Alexander Mackenzie. Take a photo at the mile zero marker and then stroll the adjacent park and arboretum.

3) Visit Twelve-Foot Davis’s hometown

The town of Peace River virtually grew up around the trading post of this legendary man. After striking it rich on a gold claim just 12 feet wide, Henry Fuller Davis spent the rest of his life in the Mighty Peace district. He is laid to rest atop a hill in the town of Peace River, where you can learn more about him and enjoy the view.

4) Cross the Peace River by ferry

During the summer months there are two different free ferries capable of moving an RV across the Peace River in the Mighty Peace region. One is at the end of the Shaftesbury Trail, otherwise known as Section Highway 684. It transports traffic to Tangent, which has a full service campground on the east side of the river. The other is at on Highway 697 just south of the village of La Crete.

5) Take advantage of long northern days

When the sun doesn’t sleep until after 10 o’clock at night, it’s easy to enjoy the opportunities for golfing, canoeing, power boating, fishing and cycling available in the Mighty Peace region. The local tourism association thoughtfully provides a waterproof map and guide for those who’d like to explore every inch of the upper Peace River valley; check www.mightypeace.com for more information on ordering the guide. They also print a full vacation planner with information on over 30 campgrounds, 12 museums, 12 golf courses and local events including rodeos and old-time music festivals.

Mighty Peace Tourism working on trails strategy

Mighty Peace Tourism has started work on a new trails strategy for the area it serves.

Executive director Tammy Brauer says the federal and provincial governments have made trail tourism a priority.

“The purpose of this is to provide an inventory of the current supply of trails and trails tourism experiences in the region and to assess the local support for pursuing trails tourism, to evaluate the region’s trails tourism readiness and identify which visitor markets hold the greatest potential for the region and their interests.”

Brauer says a contractor has been hired and mapping data is being collected from municipalities and organizations.

She adds this strategy is seen as an economic driver.

“Deliberately advancing trails tourism and (the) creation of locally supported signature trail experiences will help to attract visitors to the region.”

“It will increase and diversify the mix of year-round visitor experiences that our region offers to both residents and visitors.”

The public is being asked to take part in an online survey and add trails they know about through an online mapping tool. These can both be found on the Mighty Peace Tourism website .

“It’s easy and fun to use, so we encourage everyone to give us their feedback and thoughts with the survey and the online mapping tool,” adds Brauer.

Some stakeholder engagement sessions are also planned but details have not been finalized.

Trails used in winter and summer, motorized, non-motorized and mixed-use, are all included.

Brauer says the hope is to have the strategy finished by the beginning of next winter.

Mighty Peace Tourism includes 15 municipalities, ranging from the Peace River north to Northern Sunrise County and also takes in the Smoky River region.

15 Small Towns In America That Should Be On Your Travel Bucket List

  • These scenic small towns in the US are great vacation spots for a relaxing, peaceful, and even an affordable getaway in some cases.
  • Truckee, California, is a historic slice of the Golden State with beautiful nature and ski resorts.
  • Sedona, Arizona, is another one of the bucket list small towns America has in store, with stunning red rocks, hiking trails, and a walkable downtown area.

The smaller towns in the United States are ideal for those looking for underrated vacation spots. Everyone knows about busy cities like New York, Chicago, and Los Angeles, where the tourism numbers always remain high.

The desire to visit the bigger cities is often strong, but not everyone wants to deal with the hustle and bustle on a vacation. Instead, a more relaxing, peaceful, and even a more affordable vacation can be had in any of the abundance of beautiful small towns in America.

To celebrate the charm of small dots on the US map (and inspire travelers to visit them, of course!), this article will look at some of the small town destinations in America that have smaller populations but a world of fun and beauty. From budget-friendly small towns in the South to coastal locales and scenic small towns right next to major national parks (or within them, in some cases - hello, Gatlinburg!), there's truly a tiny American town for every taste.

Perhaps most entertaining of all, these small areas won’t typically attract big groups of visitors, which makes them even more appealing for those wanting a quiet retreat.
