MoAfrika Tours is a touring company with a difference.

We don’t specialise in just taking our guests into the most famous reserves in South Africa, we also host our guests in those urban cities that have made South Africa famous! We know that our guests come to Africa in search of those incredible animal sightings often seen on the big screen, but we also know that animals are not the only reason they search for tours into one of the last continents to truly be wild. The cities of South Africa are unlike any you will come across in other nations. On the outside, they are splashed with the veneer of westernisation but beneath the surface lies the most incredible history rooted deep in Africa, a hold on cultures the people are passionate about.

Luxury and Budget African Safaris, Tours,Holidays

Tourist attractions in South Africa are sometimes best seen by booking a tour . For close on 2 decades, MoAfrika has been taking both local and international tourists to those attractions that are considered to be the best places to visit in South Africa. Our many years of travelling the country have allowed us to create the perfect tour packages!

South Africa. There is not another place like it on earth! For so many reasons, South Africa is one of the world’s very best destinations for tourists, even though we might be considered a third world nation. Despite political setbacks and a little lack of development here and there, South Africa still has plenty to offer. We have more than 100+ South African Tours.

#1 African Safari Operator for affordable budget and luxury tailor-made safari packages.

Call it rustic appeal, or perhaps it is the intrigue that keeps bringing tourists back to our shores, South African holidays are undeniably a once in a lifetime experience. From Kruger Park safaris and other wildlife experiences to bustling city hubs and stunning, sometimes blissfully empty coastlines, South Africa is every tourist’s dream destination.

Where to go when planning a Guided African Tour or Safari

The list is literally endless. And what’s really great about planning a trip to South Africa is that your itinerary can be set up to match your mood or your personality. Sounds farfetched but it’s true. Travelling during the offseason (particularly during the South African school terms and the winter months) could present you with a quieter experience. You could also opt to avoid the “hot” destinations, such as Cape Town and head inland to the Pilanesberg, where you can have a laidback safari.

You might like our Victoria Falls Tours

But in order to plan where you will be going, you first need to know what is out there. South Africa is quite an affordable destination for overseas tourists , and with all of the modern day amenities, your holiday is going to be a relaxed one.

One thing to keep in mind when planning, is that each part of South Africa is very different from the next. Not only are we a culturally diverse nation, but it sometimes feels like each region of our nation is actually a part of a completely different country altogether. This is because our country has many different eco-systems, landscapes and people.

This is our list of places where you should go while here, but always keep in mind that with each place we mention, there are numerous other places surrounding it. For instance, say you go to Cape Town . Within Cape Town, there are hundreds of attractions, but journeying just outside of the city will present more than you bargained for. Think of it as micro-attractions within and around the main attraction. With this in mind, you won’t miss a thing!

Since we’re talking about Cape Town quite a bit, we might as well start this list with the Mother City. Cape Town is a brilliant place to visit, regardless of the time of year. It offers something all year round and the beauty of the city and its surrounds is undeniable. Not only will you find that there is a myriad of incredible beaches, which you will find difficult to tear away from during the summer, but there are many urban attractions including the V&A Waterfront and thousands of great places to eat.

You might like: Cape Town Safaris

And then there is Table Mountain, Boulders Beach (which is home to penguins) and just outside of the city, you’ll find acre upon acre of wine land country. You’ll never be bored here, but you might find it a bit overwhelming to plan your stay. If this is the case, have a look at the tour options we have available.

Sun City and the Pilanesberg

This is a two in one treat. You get to have the safari experience, alongside some city fun! South Africa is a great place to experience a safari, and while the Kruger Park safari is the most popular destination, it is by no means the only wildlife destination. Game parks offering wildlife safaris are dotted all over South Africa. And some of the best South African safari packages are based in the Pilanesberg.

Much like other places in South Africa, the Pilanesberg is full of history. But not the kind you might be thinking. This reserve is in a crater and has many geologically significant points. Aside from that, it is also home to all kinds of animals; predators and plains game alike. We highly recommend staying more than a day in the Pilanesberg and we have just the tour package for you!

And our Pilanesberg tour package happens to include a stop off at the fantasy world that is Sun City. For some tourists, Sun City is the ultimate resort destination. The resort is only 3 hours away from Johannesburg and provides plenty of entertainment including its own man-made beach! Whether you visit here after your stay in the Pilanesberg or if you choose to make Sun City your main holiday destination, you won’t be disappointed.

Kwa-Zulu Natal and Durban

Should you travel from Cape Town to the Pilanesberg and then head to Kwa-Zulu Natal, you will instantly notice that the landscape has made a dramatic change. Kwa-Zulu Natal could not be more different from the dry interior. This province is well known for its dramatic greenery as well as the intense humidity. The province has many safari destinations but it is best known for its beaches and for its historical landmarks. Many wars have taken place in this province and tourists can take tours of the battlegrounds while learning about the fights that have influenced South African history.

After exploring the province and visiting the battlegrounds and perhaps even enjoying a hike in the Drakensberg Mountains, taking a tour of Durban is a fantastic way to make sure that you have seen all that this part of the world has to offer.

Durban is a city filled with life and it is home to many different cultures. Much like Cape Town, there is plenty to do in and around the city, and a tour is the best way to get a genuine feeling for the city. Of all the incredible places to see in Kwa-Zulu Natal, Durban is the final jewel in the journey. And Durban is known as the “Playground” for a reason. Along with spending time on the beaches, you can also visit uShaka Marine World.

Kwa-Zulu Natal also gives tourists the opportunity to go on a real wildlife safari. The Hluhluwe Imfolozi Park is well-known for its white rhino conservation programme, and guests to the park will be in the perfect position to see these magnificent animals.

Province By Province: Other Must-See Places in South Africa

MoAfrika has specially created many tours in order to give tourists an unbelievable South African holiday. The great thing about booking a tour with a travel operator is that all of the admin and planning is taken care of, but it also adds a bit of diversity to your South African excursions. A tour with an experienced tour guide is far more interactive and exciting, as your guide is going to be well informed about where you are headed. They will be able to share all kinds of information about where you are going. Every province in the country is different and has attractions that are unique to the province.

South Africa has 9 provinces and here are the must-see places of each.

It is exceptionally difficult to decide on a single destination in this province. Many would say that this is South Africa’s tourism capital because it is home to the most popular areas of the Kruger National Park. While the Kruger extends into the Limpopo Province, most of the action happens in the southern areas of the Kruger. View Our Kruger National Park Safaris

For many tourists , the Kruger Park safari is the main reason why they venture to our country. Kruger Park safaris are as popular as ever. There is never a dull moment in the park and the only regret you might have is not spending more time here!

Limpopo is another of South Africa’s provinces that are home to countless safari destinations. The province is hot and dry; it is rugged and rustic. One of the best places to visit is up in the mountains, well away from the heat. We’ve already mentioned a safari destination, so instead of pointing out another one, we’re headed to the Magoebaskloof. In this area of the province, there are places to go fishing, places to enjoy a memorable meal and there are countless hiking trails. A self-drive is possibly the easier way to see the area in its entirety, however, if you should prefer not to drive yourself, there are tours available.

Kwa-Zulu Natal

Away from the busy tourist areas, you will find plenty of enjoyment in the Midlands as well as at various stops along the Drakensberg Mountain Range. A hike in the Drakensberg will possibly give you a different perspective of the world around you. The pictures simply don’t do these mountains any justice. You can experience all seasons in one day when you are in the mountains, so knowing what to pack and having some knowledge of the trail is very important. You might want to consider booking a hiking tour instead of going solo. View our Durban Tours

North West Province

Even with all the faults our country has, one thing is certain: we are committed to conservation! Just about every province has some conservation effort going on, and just about every nature reserve has a conservation programme running.

The Lion Park is devoted to the conservation of lions, and guests to the park will see lions in a way that they would never have otherwise seen them. Here you will have a different kind of unforgettable safari.

Although it is South Africa’s most urban province, it is just that characteristic that makes Gauteng such a stunning place to visit. Taking a tour around Pretoria, Soweto and Johannesburg is a must, as is paying a visit to all of the biggest landmarks, such as the Union Buildings. Both cities can be daunting to navigate if you haven’t been there before, so sometimes the best way to see everything is by touring with an operator.

A larger portion of the South African farming community is based here. So you can just imagine the flatlands filled with row upon row of maize plants. Even though the Free State might not seem like the most enticing destination, visiting Clarens makes it all worth it. Clarens is based in the foothills of the beautiful Maluti Mountains. This small town is perfect for hikers as well as for those looking for a romantic getaway.

Northern Cape

Also home to a few safari reserves, the Northern Cape is known for its extremely hot, desert-like climate. The big attraction that you shouldn’t miss seeing is the Big Hole. What started out as a mine has become a tourist attraction, and while it is disputed whether or not the Hole is the biggest hole excavated by land, it is truly a sight to see!

Eastern Cape

Arguably South Africa’s wildest province, the Eastern Cape is not only home to secret beaches, but it is also home to the Wild Coast. Kilometre upon kilometre pristine yet, well, wild beaches, along with small tourist towns, dot the coastline, enticing visitors. You can also a href=”https://moafrikatours.com/tour-category/garden-route”>visit the Garden Route, which extends into the Western Cape.

Western Cape

With Cape Town and all of the surrounding wine lands, you are spoilt for choice when in this province. While here, be sure to tour around all the smaller towns. This province is filled with history, and you will find most of it in the small towns. This is also a different approach to touring the province.

Some of the best places to see in South Africa are off the beaten track. When you are planning a South African holiday or escape to natural beauty, to check out self-driving options as well as tour operators. A combination of the two can provide you with a stunning excursion.

Kruger & Coast

This trip was absolutely incredible! I stared in JNB to Durban, just the 9 days, and was a solo traveller from Ireland. It was such a good trip that despite my bag being lost on the flight and having nothing for 4 days I still had the time of my life. First of all, they did an amazing job in preparation to us arriving at pairing people into rooms and really got it spot on. I was put in with an Australian girl and we literally became the best of friends and inseparable after one day, so much so that Lolly, one of our guides, had thought we knew each other beforehand. But everyone got on so well and were so close after a few days too and everyone was amazing at offering to lend me clothes and such seeing as my bag had gone missing with the airline. There are lots of early starts but they are definitely worth it! Just listen to your guides as they are trying to give you the best experience they can possibly give you. There are so many highlights from this trip, especially the Zululand community visit which was such a huge eye opener and experience, or the Hlane camp which was incredible and we all sat down beside the wateringhole and had a few drinks that night after our bush walk in the safari. The views and scenery are incredible, make sure you have loads of storage on your phone or camera! I had never seriously camped before, and neither had my tent mate, but it was all so fun and we were experts by the end of it. You get what you sign up for, its a real African experience so don't complain!! (one woman on our trip was incredibly rude to both our guides all the time, and complained about having to put her tent down in the morning, don't know what she expected, I felt so so sorry for both Onary and Lolly as they were both so so amazing the whole trip and were doing their best and took incredible care of us and definitely did not deserve any complaints or rudeness, but I suppose every group has one). When it comes to the two guides, Onary and Lolly, I don't know where to begin. absolute gentlemen. Onary cooked breakfast and Dinner for us and every meal was an absolute feast! He even cooked us soup for starters one night which was the best soup I've tasted in my life. He went to such a huge effort to look after us, as did Lolly who drove us everywhere. Both guys were so so knowledgeable and Onary gave us a guided tour talk whenever we came across a sightseeing spot or an animal, he knew absolutely everything and I learned so much. I would highly advise talking to them as you will learn an incredible amount about Africa. The truck is incredibly equipped, with charging USB points all along and a cooler in the back for the supplied water and any snacks or drinks we want to keep cold. The Kruger campsites were fantastic. We camped as close to the facilities as possible in each campsite and the Kruger and St. Lucia bathrooms were incredibly modern and clean with hot water and showers. The Mozambique experience was amazing. Just remember enough to pay for your visa! I think on our trip it was 50 US dollars or 750 south African rand, but it changes all the time so make sure to bring more. The beach here was like a postcard, and I'd highly recommend the beach bar which was really good fun. This tour exceeded all my expectations, with an excellent itinerary which had so many included activities and the guides tried to help us get the best possible experience in Africa. I'd highly recommend anyone thinking of going to definitely go, it won't disappoint. Just remember you're in Africa, it's not 5 star luxury, the guides are doing their absolute best to please everyone and as long as you go with an open mind and ready to enjoy yourself and have fun with all the other travellers on this trip you'll enjoy this tour too.

The safaris on day one and two were excellent however I would say a few things are not as the itinerary suggests. The drive from johanessburg is not 4 hours, but more like 6-7 hours. Also, day 4 there is no time for a morning safari so this was incorrect too

What people love about Kruger National Park Tours from Johannesburg

Our guide was superlative. Our itinerary was superb. Our accommodation and food really satisfying and well beyond expectations. It was a great trip and I'd do it again at my first opportunity. And I'll recommend to far and wide!
I did the 9 day Kruger and Coast tour. It was absolutely amazing. I didn’t expect to eat such fantastic and varied vegetarian dishes, but our guide Chad was a fantastic chef. I felt safe and reassured being with a local guide who knew the culture and people where we visited. The homestay and the game drives were definite highlights. It’s worth noting that the days are very long- early mornings most days and long drives to get to the next location. Absolutely everyone expects tips along the way so be sure to bring a lot of extra money, this cost much more than I had anticipated. Overall it was an incredible experience and I wouldn’t change a thing about it. Our driver, Vincent was also wonderful !
Morgan and Mike have been the best group leaders I have ever had on an intro trip - they are highly knowledgeable and so passionate about South Africa. They were committed to providing the best possible experience for us all, and I have never once felt unsafe. The tour itself is amazing and gives a real insight into the culture and history which I have found not to be the case on other trips. They have helped me make memories and friends for life - I can’t thank you both enough!

Attractions on Johannesburg Tours

Vilakazi Street Soweto

Vilakazi street is situated in Soweto, Johannesburg. Vilakazi street is believed to be the most famous street in Soweto South Africa. Vilakazi street is believed to be the most famous street in Soweto Tours South Africa. It is famously so because it was once home to two Nobel prize winners, His Excellency the late Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela and the late Reverend Desmond Tutu. It is also in this street where Hector Pieterson a 13-year-old boy was shot dead in the riots on the 16th of June 1976. Another interesting fact is that in 1955 the South African freedom charter was signed in Vilakazi Street. The Street is named after the late Dr Benedict Wallet Vilakazi in honour and respect of Dr Vilakazi’s Achievements and his legacy. Dr Benedict Wallet Vilakazi was born in 1906 Groutville KwaZulu Natal and died in 1947 Johannesburg Dr Benedict Wallet Vilakazi was an author of novels and poems and a lecturer. He is famously known for his works in novels like Nje Nempela released in 1933 and others like Noma nini, poetry like Inkonlo kazulu released in 1935. In 1936 together with linguist C.M Doke the helped develop a Zulu to English dictionary, and many more. Some of his poetry also explored the exploitation and discrimination of the black South Africans As an educator he lectured in Witwatersrand university in the bantu studies department. It is said that he worked as an assistant to linguist C.M Doke in 1934. It is also believed that he was the first black South African to lecture white South Africans. Eventually he lectured as a senior lecture at Witwatersrand. In 1938 He was also rewarded with an M.A by Witwatersrand University in Johannesburg. Dr Benedict Wallet Vilakazi was believed to be the first Black South African to be awarded with a doctorate in 1946 which he earned from his works in the Zulu and Khosa Languages. Vilakazi street has drawn a lot of interest and attraction both nationally and internationally and this has brought about entrepreneurial ventures such as restaurants and Curios shops. One such business venture is the famous Sakhumzi restaurant one of the many restaurants that started due to the historic nature of Vilakazi street. Sakhumzi restaurant was the first restaurant to be established in 2001 in Vilakazi street. You can get to see this great attraction when you book a Pretoria, Soweto and Apartheid Museum Tour or a Johannesburg, Soweto and Apartheid Museum Tour . Both Tours depart from Johannesburg and Pretoria Sakhumzi restaurant was established by Mr Sakhumzi Maqubela. The inspiration of Starting the venture was brought about by friends and family who gathered to share stories about their history and goals they had and a meal which Mr Sakhumzi would share with them. His Excellency the late Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela donated his home on the 1st sept 1999 to his founded trust the Soweto heritage trust to become a museum. In 1999 his excellency the late Nelson Mandela’s home was declared a national heritage site which is now known as Mandela House Museum . This declaration brought made Mandela’s house a tourist attraction which also is part of Soweto Tours . Due to the tourist from across the globe visiting Vilakazi street other business opportunities rose and created job opportunities for the local community, like street vendors selling curios just outside of Mandela House Museum.

Mandela House Museum

8115 Corner of Vilakazi and Ngakane street Soweto is not just an ordinary address, but it was once a home to his excellency the late Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela. These is the house that is famously known as Mandela House Museum It is believed to have been built in 1945. The house was a simple house built with red bricks and cement floor and a roof made of tin commonly referred to as “matchbox”. The house had two tiny bedrooms which Mandela had said that a double bed filled up almost their whole bedroom. It had a tiny kitchen and a bucket bathroom. Nelson Mandela only moved into this house in 1947 with his first wife Evelyn Ntoko Mase. Nelson Mandela planted a family tree in their yard where they buried their children’s umbilical cord as practiced in his culture. Evelyn Ntoko Mase, was a trained nurse together with Nelson Mandela they had four children, their first child a son Thembekile was born in 1946 and later died in a car crush in 1969 at only 23 years of age, their second child was a daughter Makaziwe born in 1947 who died 9 months later due meningitis. Mandela and Evelyn had another child a son in 1950 Makgatho Lewanika who later in 2005 at age 54 due complication of HIV/AIDS. In 1953 Nelson Mandela and Evelyn Mase had their 4th born a daughter whom Mandela named Makaziwe Phumla in honour of their second daughter. Nelson Mandela and first wife Evelyn Mase were married in 1944 and later divorced in 1958 they were only married for 14yrs. Reasons that led to their divorce was because Mandela was becoming more involved in the political activism in the 1950’s and Evelyn’s got more involved with the Jehovah witness religion which was a constant conflict between the two parties and in return put a strain in their marriage. In 1958 Nelson Mandela married Winnie Madikizela Mandela his second wife. Winfried Madikizela Mandela she was only 22 years of age and Mandela was 18 years her senior when they got married. Winnie was a qualified social worker. The couple moved into 8115 corner of Vilakazi Orlando West house that same year. Together they had two daughters Zenani who was born shortly after their wedding in 1958.Two years later in 1960 Their second daughter Zindziwa was born. Mandela did not spend much of his time with his young family, as he became more and more deeply involved with the struggle against the Apartheid government. In 1963 Mandela was arrested and imprisoned. At the Rivonia trial he was accused of sabotage and treason and sentenced to life. This meant that Winnie Madikizela Mandela had to become his public face for the 27 years that Mandela spent in prison. During the years that Mandela was imprisoned Winnie lead a domestic anti-apartheid movement as a result she was constantly harassed by the apartheid police, they would fire gun shots at their home which is evident with the original bullet holes found on some of the walls in their home. Because of this constant attacks Winnie built a wall in her leaving room where they would seek refuge whenever they got attacked. On several occasions between (1962-1986) Winnie Mandela got arrested, tortured during such times the girls were left alone at their home. At one point Winnie ended up being banished out of Johannesburg and sent to Brandfort. In 1988 Mandela house burnt down to the ground by high school students of Soweto due conflicts brought about by Mandela united football club (MUFC) but the community helped rebuild it. On the1st sept 1999 His Excellency the late Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela donated his home 8115 corner of Vilakazi and Ngakane street Soweto, to his founded trust the Soweto heritage trust to become the Mandela House Museum. Africa Moja Tours offers a Private Half Day Soweto Tour which covers this attraction in Soweto and other famous attractions like Orlando Towers and Hector Pieterson Museum.

Constitutional Hill

Constitution Hill is a National Heritage Site proclaimed on 10 March 2017, and a living museum that tells the story of South Africa’s journey to democracy and reflects the history of Johannesburg. Nowhere can the story of South Africa’s past and its extraordinary transition to democracy be told as it can be told at Constitution Hill.

A walk through the various sites at Constitution Hill is a walk-through South Africa’s history from the pain of the past to the hope of a strong democratic future that is still under construction. While these sites witnessed so many abuses, they were also the place where many sacrificed their own freedom for the democratic rights in our Constitution.

The sites date to 1893, when the doors to the Old Fort built by President Paul Kruger in 1893 first opened as a prison for white men. Later it was turned into a military fort. In the early 20th century, more prison sections were added to the site, including a section for black male prisoners, known as Number Four and Number five, a Women’s jail, and an Awaiting Trial Block. The prison section generally known as Number four comprises sections four and five of the Old Fort prison complexes. Black men and boys were imprisoned mostly for contravening segregation and apartheid laws to these communal cells that were extreme overcrowded and were subjected to diseases, indignities, and intimidation gangs famously known as Nongoloza.

Former political prisoners that were held at Number four includes Indian Civil Rights Activists Mahatma Ghandi, and former African National Congress President Albert Luthuli.

In 1910, women’s jail was built. The jail accommodated both black and white female but separately. Women were arrested for brewing beers, cooking and selling food because these deemed as illegal activities, many women were arrested with their children. In 1958, 2000 women were arrested for protesting for the pass laws. Women like male prisoners were also subjected to indignities, they were not provided with sanitary pads, they had to bath outside communal outdoor with running cold water which were visible to surrounding Johannesburg’s nearby office blocks. The political females who were imprisoned in women’s jail include Winnie Madikizela Mandela, Albertina Sisulu, and many political activists.

During awaiting trial block, thousands of people passed through this prison. In 2001, the building was demolished to make way for the new constitutional court, but staircases were kept. Bricks from this building was incorporated into the constitutional court as a constant reminder of site’s history.

The Judges of the Constitutional Court chose the site of the Old Fort Prison complex as the Court’s new home to symbolise how the pain and terrible suffering of the past could be transformed into hope for the future. In 2004, the Constitutional Court and Constitution Hill were opened to public as a museum focused on Heritage, Education and Tourism. Our Johannesburg, Soweto and Apartheid Museum gives an opportunity to visit this tourist attraction and it allows us to fully understand the history on guided tour. Another Johannesburg Tour that focuses on this tour is the Private Constitutional hill and Apartheid Museum Tour .

9 Best Things To Do In Johannesburg, South Africa

J o’burg, or Jozi as locals affectionately call it, or sometimes E’Goli or the “City of Gold” because of its historical links to gold mining — how much do you know about the city of Johannesburg? Located in the eastern part of the country, Johannesburg is a massive city, the largest in South Africa. It is South Africa’s financial center, a city that has shaped the country’s history and politics, and one that is filled with treasures.

Often overlooked in favor of other more picturesque parts of South Africa, Johannesburg is often just a stopover for international tourists, being home to O.R. Tambo International Airport, the busiest airport on the African continent. Often the jumping-off point for a safari and mostly enjoyed on a quick layover, Johannesburg is a city of contrasts. On one hand, there’s the poverty and struggles of Soweto, and on the other, there are the glitzy skyscrapers and “super homes” of Sandton, which is often referred to as Africa’s richest square mile. Despite its complicated past, the City of Gold has a lot to offer tourists.

There’s a lot to see, do, and learn here, much more than you may imagine. Read on for my top tips for things to do in Johannesburg.

1. The City Center

A great way to start your Johannesburg experience is by heading into the city center, which is full of historic buildings. The city’s reputation can make it a bit intimidating for solo travel, so a good option for getting a feel for South Africa’s biggest and richest city is by joining the safety and security of a guided walking tour . Visit Chancellor House, where Nelson Mandela and Oliver Tambo set up South Africa’s first black-owned law firm. Get a 360-degree view of Johannesburg from the Carlton Centre, a 50-story skyscraper located in central Johannesburg. Admire heritage buildings on historic Main Street. Visit the Workers Museum and Museum Africa. Get a feel for the hustle and bustle of the people, lifestyle, and culture of this complex city.

2. Constitution Hill

If you’re visiting South Africa, spend some time learning about apartheid — a brutal period of national segregation that lasted 43 years. A visit to Constitution Hill will give you a better understanding of this troubled era.

Constitution Hill was once a notorious complex of prisons, known as “The Fort,” where political activists and ordinary citizens alike were incarcerated throughout the apartheid era. Thousands of men and women — of all races, ages, social statuses, and political beliefs, including Nelson Mandela and Mahatma Gandhi — were imprisoned and tortured here.

Constitution Hill overlooks the city and has been transformed into beautiful, thought-provoking museums focussing on the promotion of human rights. Some interesting exhibits include Number Four Museum (once male prisoner cells), the Old Fort Museum (where the whites-only prison was located), and the Women’s Gaol Museum. You’ll also have the opportunity to enter the still-functioning High Court, if no proceedings are in progress.

Visiting Constitution Hill will give you deeper insights into South Africa’s history and you should pair your visit with a tour of the Apartheid Museum, whose immersive exhibits explore this tragic time in more depth.

3. The Apartheid Museum

The Apartheid Museum will give you glimpses of apartheid, the laws of segregation according to racial groups, and South Africa’s painful journey to freedom.

On arrival, you’ll receive an entry ticket that will randomly classify you as white or non-white and you may only enter through the gate indicated for the race you have been allocated. That’s just to give you a taste of the reality of the past and set the atmosphere for the rest of your visit.

There are two main exhibitions in the Apartheid Museum , The Permanent Exhibition and The Mandela Exhibition, as well as rotating temporary exhibits that explore different aspects of the issue more in depth. The permanent exhibition takes you through some of the painful events of South Africa’s struggle for liberation. The Mandela Exhibition gives you an opportunity to learn about the leading statesman who was at the forefront of the country’s struggle against apartheid, including his time as a prisoner for 27 years.

4. Soweto Township

About 12 miles from Jo’burg center, Soweto is the largest township in South Africa with around 1.3 million inhabitants. During the apartheid regime, Soweto was at the heart of the movement to end apartheid and was a no-go area for tourists. More recently, the South African government has focussed on developing tourism in Soweto, making it a safe, dynamic, and interesting place to visit with some wonderful historical areas to explore, as well as an up-and-coming adventure sports scene.

The best way to experience Soweto is on a guided tour with someone who’ll take you to the main landmarks and tell you about their relevance, including Vilakazi Street, the only street in the world to have housed two Nobel Peace Prize winners (Nelson Mandela and Archbishop Desmond Tutu).

If you’re looking for a different side of the township, check out the activities at Soweto Towers. These striking structures, which were once part of a power station, now serve as an entertainment center and adrenaline-junky paradise. Bungee jumping, from a 328-foot-high suspension bridge, is the big attraction here. You can also try paintball or base jumping.

5. Maboneng Precinct

Another fun thing to do in Johannesburg is take a tour of the “super cool” Maboneng Precinct. Once a rundown part of town, a renovation project has turned it into an up-and-coming neighborhood where you’ll find great restaurants, cafés, bars, boutiques, and art galleries. Maboneng is a Sesotho word meaning “place of lights,” and the name perfectly describes the district. It is Johannesburg’s downtown fashion corner, buzzing lifestyle playground, and one of the city’s major creative hubs. Maboneng is filled with remarkable works of art, beautiful murals, and colorful graffiti.

6. The Walter Sisulu National Botanical Gardens

If you’re looking for something a little more “natural,” you’ll find plenty to enjoy at the Botanical Gardens. There are nine national botanical gardens in South Africa, and the Walter Sisulu , with its 200 acres of greenery and seven gardens of local and international plants, is one of them.

Highlights include the Witpoortjie Waterfall, Birds and Butterfly Garden, Fern Trail, Children’s Garden, Herb Garden, and the impressive array of desert plants in the Succulent Garden. If you’re a theater fan, spend some time in the Shakespeare Garden, which is filled with plants and herbs that were featured in the bard’s plays. The gardens are a great place to unwind and enjoy a bit of nature in the heart of the city.

7. Art Galleries

Located in Joubert Park, Johannesburg Art Gallery is one of the best art spots to visit in Johannesburg. With an impressive collection of art, including prints that date back to the 15th century, it features works of artists such as Dali and Picasso, and a section dedicated to local artists as well. Then, make your way over to the Wits Art Museum . Located on the University of the Witwatersrand Johannesburg campus, the Wits Art Museum houses 15,000 works spanning from the 19th century to the modern day.

Another excellent art venue in the city is the Goodman Gallery which focuses specifically on art with a social justice component. Its exhibits highlight emerging artists who are regarded as having helped shape the landscape of contemporary art in South Africa.

8. Food Tours

Johannesburg is often said to be the foodie capital of South Africa, but if you want to go for something super-traditional, opt for a typical African meal in Soweto, Yeoville, or Maboneng.

South Africa’s rich cultural heritage is reflected in its food and one of the coolest things to do in Johannesburg is to enjoy the cuisine. Local delicacies can include chicken neck, chicken feet, pigs’ trotters, and tripe, all accompanied by the unmissable paap — a ground-maize dish quite similar to polenta. Check out the Taste of Africa food tour which will get you sampling a variety of Pan-African restaurants in the thriving Yeoville neighborhood.

Had enough art, culture, or food and want to stretch your legs — how about teeing off at one of the best golf courses in Johannesburg? The Royal Johannesburg Golf Club , which has been running since 1890, offers two championship-level courses. At the Bryanston Country Club , there are a variety of greens for people of all skill levels, complete with plenty of entertaining water hazards. The links at Observatory Golf Course feature challenging holes and are committed to making the sport affordable for average individuals.

Whether you’re looking for adventure, relaxation, vibrant nightlife, great restaurants, or renowned cultural institutions, Johannesburg boasts a rich history and culture with museums, galleries, and historical sites to explore. A visit to Johannesburg is bound to make your stay in South Africa a memorable one.
