A brand new cruise pier has been built, allowing for easy access into Hellesylt. The largest of cruise ships are able to dock now.

When more than one cruise ship is in port, you might be tendered in.

Hellesylt is not a large village, but it is a starting point for overland tours. In most cases, you don’t take the tender into this port unless you have a tour departing from this point. When you are docked you will be allowed to disembark.

Geiranger and Hellesylt are tandem ports: At either one of the ports you will stop only for a few hours to tender passengers who book the overland tour to the other port, where your ship will stay longer. More often you will be able to disembark for a few hours at both ports.

Sightseeing:

Hellesylt is a small village in the municipality of Stranda in Møre og Romsdal county, Norway. The village lies at the head of the Sunnylvsfjord, which is a branch of the Storfjord, and which the more famous Geirangerfjord in turn branches off nearby. The village has a population of around 260. In the summertime, thousands of tourists travel through or stay in Hellesylt each day.

The focal point of the town is the large water fall in the center.

Tours Excursions Transportation:

Everyone who has done a cruise organized overland tour to Geiranger seems to love it - but agrees it's exhausting. The time in port is not extensive (about 2 hours) and if it's a tendering port so it takes a bit longer.

You also can get off the ship by yourself and take the local ferry that goes up the fjord to Geiranger. There is Norwegian music playing and offers yummy baked goods and coffee from the little snack bar on board.

The cruise line might tell you that the tenders will be only for cruise organized excursions but that's not really true.

Of course the cruise liner itself will also sail to Geiranger, so the above ferry is only of interest if you want to be among the locals and feel the typical Norwegian atmosphere.

As the weather in Norway can be very unpredictable, make sure to check the cancellation policies in case of inclement weather. It is no fun driving around in the clouds.

Norway , Port Guides

Hellesylt cruise port – gateway to geirangerfjord.

Make the most of your day in Hellesylt Cruise Port with my guide of things to do in this enchanting village.

Sitting between fjords and mountains, Hellesylt, Norway is perhaps one of the hidden gems of the Norwegian Fjords. Just around the corner from the start of Geirangerfjord , Norway’s most famous fjord, it is often overshadowed by it’s more well-known neighbour, Geiranger . However, the picturesque village is a beautiful port in its own right.

With gorgeous views all around and, perhaps unexpectedly, a dramatic waterfall taking centre stage in the village, Hellesylt cruise port is worthy addition to any cruise itinerary.

Whether you want to journey along the Geirangerfjord, enjoy the breathtaking scenery of Stryn or hike the Briksdal Glacier , Hellesylt is a great place for a Norwegian Fjords adventure.

image of a cruise ship docked in the Norwegian fjords with mountains and blue sky behind it and fjord water in front.

My cruise port guides are designed to help you make the most of your time in port, whether that is a few hours, a day or an overnight stay. I share some of the highlights and must-see attractions along with practical information so you can easily plan your visit.

In This Guide

Hellesyltfossen Waterfall

The Hellesyltfossen waterfall (or Hellesylt waterfall) is a small, but mighty, waterfall that tumbles through the village. It seems like it splits the village almost in half.

If you are visiting at the beginning of the summer, you will see it in full flow as snow will be thawing higher up the mountain. I was there in early June and it was pretty powerful still even then. The water thunders down the granite rocks with such a force you can feel the spray if you get too close.

The waterfall is set between two bridges, the lower one gives a fantastic view towards it.

image of small powerful waterfall cascading down the hillside surrounded by green trees, snow capped mountains and blue sky

Geirangerfjord

One of the main attractions of Hellesylt is its proximity to Geirangerfjord. The UNESCO World Heritage site is one of the must-see sight of the Norwegian Fjords .

Many cruise lines will offer excursions to explore Geirangerfjord . This could be via a boat trip along the fjord to Geiranger or an overland trip that will take in many scenic viewpoints on the way to the village.

image of the view looking back over the village of Geiranger nestled between snow capped mountains and at the end of the Geirangerfjord.

Some Hellesylt excursions will combine both with a boat ride along the fjord to Geiranger and then a coach tour around the most famous viewpoints.

It’s best to check with your cruise line for the different options. However, if you prefer to do it yourself there is a public car ferry to Geiranger . Don’t worry though you don’t need a car, it also carries foot passengers.

The journey along the fjord takes an hour and you’ll see the highlights including the Seven Sisters Waterfall. You can then spend a little time in Geiranger or return on the ferry.

One thing to keep in mind if you take this option is that you’ll have to make your own way to the viewpoints in Geiranger.

There is a hop on hop off bus that visits four destinations including Norwegian Fjord Centre and the famous Flydalsjuvet viewpoint. This runs between June and September. Alternatively, you can also rent an Renault Twizy electric car.

It will also be your responsibility to get back to the ship in Hellesylt in time for departure. Don’t expect it to wait for you if the ferry back is delayed or you miss it.

More things to do in Hellesylt

Hellesylt is a small place, so don’t expect there to be too much on offer. It’s all about the natural beauty and enjoying the scenery here, not lots of bars and restaurants. However, some of the things you can do in Hellesylt include

  • Taking a boat trip along the Geirangerfjord
  • Visiting the Sunnylven Church
  • Strolling around taking in the spectacular scenery or doing a local hike

Sunnylven Church

Overlooking the fjord, Sunnylven Church is a parish church that was built in 1858. Made out of timber from local woods, the church can seat 270 people, enough for the whole population of Hellesylt.

It is often open when cruise ships are in town so if you are having a wander around it is worth stopping by this beautiful church.

Highlights of Hellesylt

Local companies offer private half and full-day tours of Hellesylt and the surrounding area. Stops often include Hornindalsvatn Lake, Stryn Village, Mount Dalsnibb and Flydalgorge.

Tips for visiting Hellesylt

  • Do some research before you travel and either book an excursion or have a plan of what you might to do in your day in port
  • Don’t miss the sail in or sail out. It is well worth spending some time on deck and gazing at the incredible scenery
  • Check the weather forecast before leaving the ship. You may want to take a few layers with you just in case
  • Be considerate to the locals. Remember this is people’s home and we are guests for the day.

Port Essentials

Hellesylt cruise port.

Cruise ships dock right in the heart of Hellesylt. If you are lucky enough to have a balcony and are on the right side of the ship, you’ll wake up to a spectacular view of the Hellesyltfossen waterfall that thunders through the centre of the village.

As Hellesylt is so small there is no cruise terminal here or any facilities. Once you disembark your ship you are right in the heart of the village. It is just a short walk to get up close to the waterfall.

Some cruise ships stop here for a few hours in the morning to drop off passengers that are taking an overland excursion before continuing to Geiranger . While others spend a full day in port. Check with your cruise line to see how long you will have docked here.

image of cruise ship docked in the Norwegian Fjords with mountains in background and the end of a waterfall in foreground.

Cruise Season

Cruise ships call into Hellesylt between May and October.

The centre of the village is around 200 meters from where cruise ships dock. Here you will find a tourist information office, a supermarket, cafes and souvenir shops.

Norwegian Krone. However, you should be able to use contactless payment in many of the shops and cafes.

The weather in the Norwegian Fjords is best described as changeable. Even in the summer. While the summer climate is generally mild and calm, don’t be surprised to see sun, wind and rain all in one day.

It really is luck of the draw. I have visited twice at exactly the same time of year, almost to the week. My first visit was generally mild, very hot on two days and dry the whole week. My second week was bitterly cold at times with outbreaks of rain and hail. The sun only made the brief appearance.

Don’t be surprised to see sun, wind and rain all in one day. Keep an eye on the weather forecast before you leave, pack accordingly and keep your fingers crossed for good weather.

The Last Word

Hellesylt is a charming village full of the beauty of the Norwegian Fjords. It is a great starting point for an adventure around Geirangerfjord or just a relaxing day taking in the scenery from your ship.

Getting To Know Hellesylt – Cruise Port Guide

Port snapshot.

Hellesylt is often overshadowed by its popular neighbour Geiranger with both located in the Geirangerfjord, albeit at the end of different branches of the fjord. It is though becoming increasingly popular with cruise ships to allow guests to explore the dramatic scenery that surrounds this small village and to overnight before reaching Geiranger the following day. Hellesylt may be small in size, but it has huge touristic appeal, so if the opportunity is afforded to you though, take some time to venture out of Hellesylt to experience the jaw dropping landscape. Welcome to our Hellesylt cruise port guide.

Port Location and Facilities

The cruise pier of Hellesylt is at the heart of the village, only 200m from the centre, providing immediate access for tourists from cruise ships. Whilst there are no facilities at the pier itself, Hellesylt has a few conveniences such as two supermarkets, a large souvenir shop, a takeaway restaurant, a café and bar and a petrol station.

What not to miss

  • Hellesyltfossen

This roaring cascade is formed by the River Dalaelva which cuts the village in two. It drops over 20 metres down a rocky escarpment and has two bridges that cross it allowing different vantage points for stunning photographs of the waterfall, and from the High Bridge a great view of the village and the port.

The Peer Gynt Gallery

This exhibition space displays 11 wooden reliefs depicting the drama Peer Gynt by Norway’s most famous play write, Henrik Ibsen. Recent years have seen exhibitions focusing on World Heritage and how the UNESCO status afforded to the Geirangerfjord has influenced the development of tourism in the region, showcasing its natural wonder.

  • Sunnylven Church

The current church is from 1859 but it is located where a church has stood dating back to the 12th Century.

  • Norang Valley (Norangsdalen)

This valley is one of the narrowest in Norway and the mountains either side of you tower up so high it’s as if they envelope you and block out the sky. Within the valley are the lakes Jelskred and Lygnstøylvatnet, the latter which was formed by a rockslide in 1908 and below the surface you can still see the remains of farmhouses and the old road through the valley that were destroyed. The Norang Valley is also famous for bearing the moniker, The Queen’s Route, after the King and Queen of Norway passed through the area on their Silver Jublie cruise in 1993.

Travel Tips

Tourist information.

NoFlyCruises recommends https://visitstranda.com/en the tourism website for the Stranda municipality.

The currency in Norway is the Norwegian Krone. Norway has a reputation as one of the most expensive countries in Europe and the average price of a standard cup of coffee is around £3/$4. Budget accordingly if you plan to dine out each day, as meals are roughly around 110kr per person (£11/$13 per person).

Hellesylt has a cold and temperate climate, with the average high in July of only 11 degrees Celsius.

Getting Around

It is easy to navigate your way around the village on foot, just be aware that to reach the High Bridge over the waterfall you will either have to navigate the inclines of the roads and paths, or if you are able to take the steps that lead up alongside the waterfall. Be careful as they can become slippery when wet.

Safety Whilst Ashore

Hellesylt is a very quiet and friendly village with no issues surrounding safety whilst visiting.

Where to Eat

NoFlyCruises recommends the following eateries:

Øcal Restaurant , Fv60 1150, 6218 Hellesylt, Norway

Being such a small town, you don’t really have much choice in where to eat, however if you’re after a huge pizza and a view of the stunning waterfall, then this is the place to go.

Hellesylt Cruise Port Essentials: All You Need to Know

1. hellesylt to geiranger by ferry, 2. geirangerfjord cruise from hellesylt ferry pier, 3. rib boat tour to geirangerfjord, (a) visit the norwegian fjord centre (norsk fjordsenter), (b) hike up to flydalsjuvet viewpoint.

If you’re still in the planning stage of your Norwegian fjord cruise, don’t hesitate any longer! Norway has banned any greenhouse gas-emitting vessels from sailing into these two UNESCO heritage listed fjords from 2026 onwards . Not just cruise ships but ferries and boats as well. Only zero-emission ferries and boats will be permitted.

When I visited Hellesylt & Geirangerfjord in June 2024, the ferries and tourist boats running between Hellesylt and Geiranger were definitely not zero emission, so it will be interesting to see how new zero emission boats will be adopted in the area in the next two years! Currently only Havila Voyages’ ships have zero emission cruise ships that can sail in Geirangerfjord .

If you’ve been researching Norwegian fjord cruises, many cruise lines, including P&O Iona’s most popular roundtrip cruise from Southampton will stop calling at Hellesylt in 2026. Tourists can of course reach Geiranger by road but it won’t be as easy nor as beautiful as sailing right into Geirangerfjord.

View of Hellesylt town centre with waterfall and cruise pier

Wondering whether you can do a DIY excursion from Hellesylt cruise port to Geirangerfjord? Well, it depends on how you want to enjoy Geirangerfjord:

  • Short Walk to Ferry Pier: The ferry pier is about 5 minutes walk from the cruise pier, on flat ground, with waterfall views along the way. Jumping onto a ferry or catamaran for a cruise to Geirangerfjord on your own is super simple!
  • RIB boats galore: If you fancy the thrill, there’s multiple RIB boat operators at Hellesylt. It’s easy to grab a ticket on the day, if you haven’t booked one through your cruise line.
  • Know your ferry schedule: Multiple ferry operators make an independent excursion do-able, regardless of your ship’s arrival and departure times. If you pick your ferries well, you’ll have about 3 hours in Geiranger to enjoy yourself – plenty of time to explore, hike or catch a shuttle bus to local viewpoints.
  • Pre-book Geiranger shuttles : If you don’t fancy a hike to the viewpoints, then you’ll definitely need to pre-plan and book the Panorama shuttle.

If you’re not keen for the trip to Geirangerfjord, jump straight to my list of stuff to do in Hellelyst – unfortunately it’s not that long!

  • Official tourism website Visit Norway has an excellent section on Geirangerfjord

  • Recommended Transport App:  Use Google Maps to navigate around town and for walking directions
  • eSIM for roaming in Norway : For a great data connection without the huge roaming fees, use an eSim data pack from Airalo. Hellesylt Cruise Port to Geiranger & Geirangerfjord: Your Options

You can easily book a group excursion through your cruise line from Hellesylt Cruise Port to Geirangerfjord. This usually involves a boat ride to Geiranger and then a bus ride to one of the viewpoints to look down onto Geirangerfjord. If the excursion is sold out on your cruise, you can book one directly with the local provider , which will tailor the pick up and drop off to cruise ship departure and arrival times.

If you’d like the flexibility of seeing Geirangerfjord yourself, here’s your options:

Ferry Geirangerfjorden - The Fjords

This is the most popular and arguably the most scenic way to experience Geirangerfjord . There are two companies operating car ferries between Hellesylt and Geiranger. Both ferries take foot passengers. Whether you’d like to pre-book your preferred ferry is up to you. I did see some of my fellow cruisers buying a walk-up ticket.

Both ferries do the same route – you’ll pass iconic landmarks such as the Seven Sisters waterfall , the Suitor waterfall (which seems to be chasing the Seven Sisters) and the Bridal Veil waterfall . The ferries will dock in Geiranger Ferry Pier – see it marked on my Hellesylt / Geiranger cruise port map above 🗺️📍👆. Jump to my section on what there is to see & do in Geiranger .

  • Journey Time: Around 1 hour 5 minutes to 1 hour 15 minutes, depending on how many cars are being loaded onto the car ferry
  • Tickets: Return tickets are 525 NOK adults, 263 NOK for students and free for kids under 14.
  • Journey Time: Around 1 hour 5 minutes to 1 hour 15 minutes
  • Tickets: Return tickets are 550 NOK, 275 NOK for kids aged 4-15, free for kids under 4

When I was at the cruise pier, I noticed a third company ( Cruise Service ), running return trips from Hellesylt to Geiranger for roughly the same price on a smaller catamaran tourist boat. The schedule may suit you, if your ship is docking early, allowing you to make the 8:50am departure.

Note: On my P&O Iona cruise, when all aboard time was 4pm, we were specifically told not to take the 3pm return ferry with either company, as both will get back to Hellesylt after 4pm.

Once you get to Geiranger ferry terminal, here’s a list of things to do in Geiranger .

Seven Sisters waterfall in Geirangerfjord, Norway

If you’re only interested in seeing Geirangerfjord from sea level, then a Geirangerfjord roundtrip cruise from Hellesylt ferry pier is a good choice. The cruise boat does not stop in Geiranger itself. There will be photo stops at the three big waterfalls – Seven Sisters, the Suitor and the Bridal Veil waterfall.

FjordGuiding cruise check-in booth at Hellesylt ferry pier

  • Cruise Departure Point: Hellesylt Ferry Pier – not Hellesylt Camping. Look for the canopy 👆 called “FjordGuiding” where you can check-in up to 30 minutes before your cruise starting time. The catamaran, docks next to the ferries.
  • Cruise Length : 1 hour 30 minutes
  • Tickets: 600 NOK adults, 400 NOK for kids. Pre-book online here .

RIB stands for Rigid Inflatable Boat. They are high-speed inflatable crafts with a solid hull and inflatable tubes around the sides. They are high-speed inflatable crafts with a solid hull and inflatable tubes around the sides. This design makes them incredibly stable, maneuverable, and able to handle rougher waters. RIB boats are smaller than traditional tour boats, allowing them to access narrower passages and get closer to the fjord walls and waterfalls. There’s typically only 12 – 18 seats on each RIB boat.

That’s why there’s RIB boat rides in all of Norway’s fjord ports – Stavanger , Olden,  Haugesund .  So why do one in Hellesylt for Geirangerfjord? Geirangerfjord is probably the most iconic and famous of all the fjords in Norway. It’s truly magical! It’s UNESCO heritage listed for its exceptional beauty for a reason!

But note that RIB boat “run” is relatively short and most tour operators from Hellesylt will have you back at the pier in about an hour. (Unlike Stavanger for example, where the high speed “run” is much longer to Lysefjord.) If you’re doing it just for the thrill of it, then Stavanger’s RIB ride is longer and more fun.

There are at least three RIB boat operators at Hellesylt, all of which have a ticket booth close to the cruise pier. If you haven’t booked it through your cruise line, then one of them will surely give you a seat on the day.

What to See & Do at Geiranger

Geiranger town centre, with cruise ship docked in the pier, Geiranger, Norway

Once you get to Geiranger, there’s a few options for you to spend your time:

The Fjord Centre has a permanent exhibition about the history of the fjord, its geology and the unique ecosystems that thrive in its waters and on its shores. There’s a cafe and viewpoint.

  • How to Get There: It’s about a 15 minute walk from Geiranger Ferry Pier – it’s uphill with 327 steps! But you’ll get good views.
  • Opening Hours: Daily from 9am to 7pm during summer season
  • Tickets: 150 NOK adults and 80 NOK kids

Flydalsjuvet is probably the most famous viewpoint at Geiranger. If you’ve seen the favourite Geiranger shot with a cruise ship in it, like my featured photo at the top of my blog post, it’s usually taken from Flydalsjuvet!

You can hike up there in about an hour – don’t forget to grab a hiking map at the tourist information centre near the ferry pier before starting off. You can see a PDF version here .

(c) Catch the Panorama Bus to Flydalsjuvet & Eagle Bend

View of Geirangerfjord on the way to Dalsbibba, Geiranger, Norway with two cyclists climbing up the hill

Don’t fancy a hike? Then the Panorama Bus is your best bet! The coach will drive from Geiranger to Flydalsjuvet , stop for a photo stop and then also at Eagle Bend . You’ll need to pre-book though – there’s usually a 11:15am departure to coincide with ferry arrival times. If you don’t see it, it’s likely already booked out. Note that this does not stop at Dalsnibba Skywalk.

View of Dalsnibba Skywalk, Geiranger

The Dalsnibba Skywalk is an extraordinary viewpoint located at the top of Mount Dalsnibba, offering unparalleled panoramic views of Geirangerfjord and the surrounding mountains. It’s the highest fjord view accessible by road in Europe, reaching an elevation of 1,500 meters (~5,000 feet).

From Geiranger, it’s about a 30-minute drive up to Dalsnibba. The drive itself is an experience in itself! If you’d like to visit the Dalsnibba Skywalk, I’d recommend trying to book a tour directly with your cruise line.

The tours from Geiranger are very popular and while there are multiple departures, many of those would be sold out weeks in advance. If your cruise line has sold out of this excursion, you can try booking it directly with the local operator but it depends on your luck whether the 11:30am departure is sold out or not. This operator also caters to those cruisers whose ship is docking at Geiranger cruise pier itself. Also try the Geiranger Skywalk bus, leaving at 11:45am .

Hellesylt: What to See Around The Cruise Pier

Waterfall in town centre of Hellesylt, Norway

Right in the heart of the village, you’ll be greeted by the Hellesyltfossen , a stunning waterfall that cascades down the mountainside and plunges into the fjord. It’s an easy, 5-minute walk from the cruise pier to reach the base of the falls, where you can feel the mist on your face and marvel at the raw power of nature. There’s a bridge offering a great vantage point for photos as well as a small road up the hill – note this is steep!

Follow the winding road, from behind the Co-op supermarket across from the cruise pier (before you get to the waterfall) – see this marked on my map above 🗺️📍👆 and you’ll eventually get to Sunnylven Church. It’s a great vantage point to view Hellesylt.

Several parked Renault Twizy Electric cars outside a rental shop in Hellesylt, Norway

You will definitely notice this line of Renault Twizy electric cars on your walk from the cruise pier down to the waterfall. You can book these for a guided tour to fjord viewpoints in Hellesylt and the nearby town, Ljøen . Two passengers will fit in one car, in tandem. 899 NOK for one car (2 people). Note that you’re driving this with a guide, as part of a tour. E-bikes are also available for rental but I thought it was pretty pricy at 499 NOK for 2 hours.

Tip: The same shop serves coffee inside and there’s a room in the back with an excellent view of the waterfall. If it’s a chilly day, you can enjoy the views (and sounds) of the waterfall from here instead.

You’ll see tour operator booths selling kayaking tours and I remember that my cruise line (P&O) also offered kayaking as an excursion here in Hellesylt. If you’re not an experienced kayaker, I would recommend that you do kayaking in Olden instead.

Manoeuvring around the waterfall, as an inexperienced kayaker is difficult. I didn’t do kayaking in Hellesylt myself but I saw the kayakers being taken close to the waterfall. In Olden, where I did my kayaking adventure, we were taken to “open” fjord waters. While the weather that day made the waters quite choppy, it was still okay for inexperienced kayakers.

So there you have it, intrepid cruisers! Hellesylt and Geirangerfjord await, ready to fill your port day with awe-inspiring beauty and unforgettable adventures. Whether you choose the classic ferry route, an adrenaline-pumping RIB boat tour, or a leisurely stroll through the village, I hope your port day at Hellesylt will be one of the highlights of your Norwegian fjords cruise!

And if you’ve found this guide helpful, I would really appreciate you sharing this in your roll call groups! After all, the best journeys are meant to be shared! Safe travels and happy cruising!

  • Those looking to learn more about the village town's history should pay a visit to the Sunnylven church. It is a parish church, that is part of the Austre Sunnmore deanery in the Diocese of More and it dates back to at least 1150.
  • Another interesting place to visit in this village town is the Grand Hotel. It is an old building that dates back to 1875 and boasts of having some very interesting details in its wooden architecture. It offers a beautiful view of the fjord.
  • Thrill seekers and adventure lovers should pay a visit to the mountain Akerneset. The mountain plays host to a deserted fjord farm and was declared a Norwegian World Heritage Site for its unique geological setting and representation of Norwegian farm culture, which can only be accessed from the Storfjorden.
  • Visitors should also take the time to visit the Norangsdalen Valley, which is regarded to be the wildest valley in Norway. The Saebo-Leknes ferry offers access to the valley that can also be toured by road. Stunning views of the Norwegian landscape can be seen from this valley.

A Self-Guided Tour of Hellesylt, Norway

Handsome Hellesylt sits proudly on an arm of the Geirangerfjord that curves around to the namesake village of Geiranger. It may be one of your highlights on a Norwegian Fjord cruise as the scenery is absolutely jaw dropping – Tom Cruise (now there’s a fitting surname!) even filmed a hair raising motorcycle stunt here for Mission Impossible!

Hellesylt

I recall some of my first glimpses of Hellesylt on a cruise was after we had docked – it was a bright and blue September day on P&O Cruises Iona and there was a stream of passengers making their way into the village. Ahead of them was a wide waterfall tumbling down the rocks surrounded by several detached wooden houses with a traditional white Norwegian Church on the hill. It looked very inviting and idyllic to say the least!

View across to the church in Hellesylt

Hellesylt Waterfall

This was my first time in Hellesylt and I was up late seeking out the Northern Lights so I was content with the idea of wandering around this charming village in the sunshine and seeing the waterfall up close. There’s a footbridge that crosses in front of the waterfall and a road bridge at the top, so I did my own circular route past the church, across the top of the waterfall and down along a path on the other side.

Waterfall in Hellesylt

About half way down is a viewpoint with a bench which a few ahead of me had stopped to take a photo by. It had been dry so the water wasn’t thundering down like I’d imagine it would on a rainy spring day, but still, it’s an impressive and beautiful sight to stand beside. I almost missed the watermill just a bit further down from here so I was glad to have retraced my steps to see it as it’s quite an intriguing little bit of history.

Water-based activities in Hellesylt

If you do want to make the most of your time in Hellesylt there are a couple of water-based activities you can do in this port of call. From Hellesylt Marina (close to the cruise ship) you can set off on a 90 minute RIB ride on the Geirangerfjord , or alternatively you can take it slower on a kayaking trip from Hellesylt with a local guide (different departure point). I can just imagine how awesome it must be to see the cruise ship towering over you from the water before taking in all that stunning scenery!

Geirangerfjord viewed from Hellesylt

Before I got back onboard I spent some time walking along the shoreline to Hellesylt Bathing House where people were swimming, diving and jumping into the water. I assumed they were mostly locals accustom to the cool waters, but I think even some brave passengers saw an opportunity to give it a go after a bit of encouragement! I feel compelled to say if you do try this please be careful and swim well within your comfort zone – Fjord waters are deep and cold so don’t throw caution to the wind because you’re on holiday! Alternatively, you could always opt to stay dry (weather allowing) and relax on one of the picnic benches nearby and admire the views of the fjord and cruise ship.

#ad P&O Iona in Hellesylt

The Seven Sisters Waterfall – a memorable sail-by

Even though Iona wasn’t visiting Geiranger (which would require passing the Seven Sisters), our cruise included a sail-by on departure from Hellesylt which meant the ship cruised towards Geiranger and did a 180º turn to exit the Fjord, allowing us to see the Seven Sisters two times in quick succession.

Seven Sisters in Geirangerfjord

The dry weather had reduced the falls to a trickle on this cruise (I don’t think I even counted 7), but even so, the scenery was absolutely outstanding and I couldn’t get over the occasional house you’d see perched high on the hillside!

The Retreat on P&O Iona – make the most of those views!

My one tip for the sail away from Hellesylt, get back onboard your cruise ship with enough time to find a good spot to soak all of this up! On Iona (and many other new British ships), the top deck at the front of the ship is usually an adult-only/premium area that comes with an additional charge.

#ad Cruising through Geirangerfjord on P&O Cruises Iona

If you’re going to pay to access this area once, do it here, it was so worth it – not just because we were blessed with good weather, but having an uninterrupted panorama of the Fjord, little luxuries like blankets and cushioned beds made this experience one of my favourites from years of cruising!

Tours in Hellesylt

At the end of the mesmerizing Sunnylvsfjord we find the charming village of Hellesylt. The Sunnylvsfjord is the “sister fjord” of the UNESCO-listed Geirangerfjord. Together they form two of the innermost branches of the great Storfjord. This makes Hellesylt a perfect starting point for excursions to Geiranger. But, Hellesylt also merits a visit in its own right!

With less than 300 inhabitants, Hellesylt is an idyllic example of the authentic, small villages you find along the Norwegian coastline. Located on a fertile field between the high mountains and the deep fjord, Hellesylt has a long and rich history. In ancient times Hellesylt was regarded a sacred site. Today the area is first and foremost known for its stunning natural beauty, which has attracted international visitors since the late 1800s. One of these natural wonders lies in the very heart of the village, the beautiful Storfossen waterfall.

Just a short drive from Hellesylt we find the crystal-clear lake of Hornindal. With a depth of 514 meters (1686 ft) it is the deepest lake in Europe and said to be the home of a legendary sea serpent…! From the shores of Europe’s deepest lake, you can drive directly to Europe’s highest fjord view accessible by road at Mount Dalsnibba, almost 1500 meters (4 921 feet) above sea level. Looking down on the snowy mountain peaks around you, you will feel as if you’re standing on the top of the world.
