Fantastic concert. My tip for being the best in 2020 even though it’s only Feb. Great 20mins long jams, with band very obviously enjoying themselves. It doesn’t get better than that.

They held a presence that most could not look away from. Two songs the singer played the sitar, and if you closed your eyes you could be anywhere in the past you wanted to be, perhaps future too. The guitarist was lovely, alternating between using his slide, to whammy bar for every played note, to even singing with heavily psyched out vocals.

Bottom line: Go see them!

They are the nicest people (I can't help but wonder if it's because they're Canadian?). Regardless, I talked with the guitarist outside the venue before their set, not knowing what he looked like, and he's a normal down to earth guy like I wish all rockers would be like!

Thanks Elephant Stone for an amazing night of music that I will never in my life forget (partially because the Cubs won game 7 in overtime to win the World Series and they wweek showing it at the bar!) Thanks duders!

There quite simply just aren’t enough bands out there like Elephant Stone, who have such a distinct sound. They are the brain child of Rishi Dhir, a talented multi instrumentalist who knows exactly what he is doing when it comes to making a brand of music that is very much a crossover between traditional Indian classical music, mixed with some indie rock tendencies. He has been quoted to be the pioneer of a sound with the perfect pop song and the trippiest raga. The songs that he has written have received such a fantastic amount of critical acclaim over the last few years. He performs them with such an impressive display of musicality this evening. “Love the Sinner, Hate the Sin” is probably one of the biggest highlights for this audience this evening as they join in with these well written choruses that could make anyone in the world sing along, whilst feeling completely as thought they’re on a bit of a trip. When this sound is played live, it is so whimsical and interesting to listen to, that it is no wonder why Elephant Stone have earned themselves such a loyal following.

Elephant Stone Tickets

Elephant stone concert tickets.

Join in on an energetic pop-rock concert experience after you buy Elephant Stone tickets. The Canadian indie rock band was first formed in 2008 and founded by Rishi Dhir. Their sound is often described as a blend of traditional Indian music with psychedelic rock elements. Elephant Stone also uses a variety of instrumentals, including the sitar, table, and dilruba. They dropped their first album in 2009 which was entitled The Seven Seas . The album quickly caught the attention of fans and critics and was nominated for a 2009 Polaris Music Prize. Since then, they’ve released four other albums, four EPs, and several remixes.

One of their most popular albums was probably their self-titled one released in 2013. Not only did it get an approval rating of 71% from Metacritic, but it also spawned some of their most famous hits like “A Silent Moment” and “Sally Go Round The Sun.” Both songs ended up racking up more than 500,000 streams on Spotify alone. Any rock music aficionado looking for a new artist to add to their music libraries won’t want to miss their chance at grabbing Elephant Stone tickets while this group is performing at your local venue. They can typically be found touring alongside similar bands such as The Flowers of Hell, ROY, and The Dream Syndicate.

History becomes modern in 63rd annual Haus und Garten Tour

B lending history, preservation and contemporary design, the 63rd annual Haus und Garten Tour celebrates homes and gardens in German Village this weekend.

One can explore unique, curated selections of residences where the past intertwines with modern aesthetics.

Featured homes are picked by tour chairs, pending the homeowner's consent. One such homeowner opening their door to the public is Sally McDonald.

McDonald and her husband John bought their 2,900-square-foot house at 205 Jackson St. in 1996 for $350,000. The purchase came with an adjacent vacant lot , the former home of E&C Lang Company.

At the time, this lot was used to store enormous stone slabs. Now known as Lang Stone, the company has since relocated but is still running today, kept alive by fifth-generation Langs.

“I started coming down here (German Village) in the '70s and it was not restored like that,” said McDonald, owner of InteriorWorks. “It was still cute and charming and, you know, but gradually, they've turned over one after another and the lot became rental property.”

The house at 205 Jackson St. was no more than dirt floors, blacktop and beams. After lots of hard work and renovations , McDonald said she is thrilled with her new home.

“I love the wood floor, and I love all the light that comes in,” said McDonald. “We have an awful lot of light with the big wall of French doors and skylights.”

But she was not finished yet, as just last year, she redid her kitchen, adding new granite, backsplash tiles and more.

Continuing to showcase the mix of history and modernity in German Village is of paramount importance to the German Village Society Executive Director Sean Kessler.

Franklin Park Conservatory upgrades: Franklin Park Conservatory unveils plans for new entrance, visitors center and gardens

“There are lots of house and garden tours in Columbus now, but this was, if not the first, one of the first to happen,” said Kessler.

The uniqueness of these houses, both inside and out, is a huge draw not just for Columbus residents, but tourists from outside of Ohio.

“I was only six months on the job, and I had people coming here saying, ‘Yeah, we're from Baltimore, we come every year; this is our girls' trip. ’ So, yeah, you know, it attracts (people) from all around,” said Kessler.

Kessler knows that each homeowner brings their own style and execution into both the interiors and exteriors of their home, giving visitors a lot to look at and leaving everyone with something to love.

Haus und Garten Tour at a glance

Saturday’s preview tour runs from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m., followed by a cocktail party from 6:30 to 7:45 p.m. and private dinners at 8 p.m. Sunday’s tour occurs from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., with German Village residents opening their doors.

Saturday’s $125 cocktail party tickets and $200 private dinner tickets, as well as the $25 tickets for Sunday's tour are available online at germanvillage.com , as well as volunteer and sponsor information.

How Cage the Elephant’s Frontman Nearly Lost It All

Matt Shultz is a rock ’n’ roll ringmaster known for pushing himself to the brink. After a period of psychosis and an arrest, he had to put his reality back together again.

A black-and-white photo of six men sitting and standing in a semicircle, with one on the floor in the middle, wearing sunglasses and a cap that says L.A.

By Hank Shteamer

In the spring of 2020 as the pandemic cut a terrifying path across the globe, touring bands packed up and went home, unsure how they’d survive. At the same time, Matt Shultz, the frontman of Cage the Elephant — the rare arena-scale rock act to emerge within the past two decades — was facing a different crisis in his own head.

After releasing five hard-edged yet hook-filled albums with Cage the Elephant since 2008, Shultz, a frontman known for stripping down to underwear and fishnet tights and walking the length of venues atop his audience’s outstretched hands, was not himself.

Suffering an extreme reaction to medication he was prescribed to treat A.D.H.D., he fell into psychosis. Consumed by paranoia and convinced he was being hounded by malicious actors who would routinely break into his home, the singer began carting around his belongings — photographs, journals, books and more — in bulky suitcases.

His brother, Brad Shultz, who plays guitar in the band, recalled their mother describing Matt’s ever-present haul as “a physical representation of his emotional baggage.”

Matt’s struggles came to a dramatic and very public head in January 2023, when he was arrested on weapons charges at the Bowery Hotel in Manhattan after police found two loaded handguns in his room. He has since regained his grip on reality through extensive treatment — and avoided jail time thanks to a plea deal — but his season in hell is immortalized on “Neon Pill,” the band’s sixth studio album, which it will support with a North American tour of arenas and amphitheaters starting this week.

“I lost control of the wheel,” Matt, 40, sings on the deceptively breezy-sounding title track in his hoarse croon. “Double-crossed by a neon pill.”

“When I wrote the song, I was convinced that someone was tampering my medication and trying to poison me,” he said in early June, sitting in the backyard of a Japanese cafe in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, wearing Celine sunglasses, an L.A. Dodgers cap and a patterned knit short-sleeve shirt. “My brother said the most heartbreaking thing was to hear that,” he added, referring to the lyric about treatment that turns toxic. “He’s like, ‘He’s so close to the truth, but can’t quite grasp it.’”

Cage the Elephant’s knack for accessing authentic emotion has helped win the Bowling Green, Ky., band a loyal following, a pair of platinum albums and two Grammys during a time when rock’s mainstream market share has dwindled.

“There’s a lot of heart in what they do,” said Beck, who toured with Cage the Elephant in 2019, collaborated on the track “Night Running” and guested with the band onstage at a Los Angeles show in May. He praised the group’s gift for balancing accessibility with deeper resonance. “There’s something undeniably real about what’s happening,” he added, “and people feel it.”

That transparency pulses through “Neon Pill,” whether Matt is exposing the dark side of the party on “Good Time” or praising the constancy of a companion who stays close “even when it’s painful” on “Rainbow,” an ode to his wife, Eva, whom he divorced at the height of his paranoia but later remarried. (“I thought that she was in danger from whoever was after me,” he explained.)

Matt believed he was the victim of relentless online hackers, then became convinced that he had run afoul of an actual criminal syndicate. “It was just an endless stream of epiphanies,” he said, that “had no basis in reality.”

His memory of the arrest is vivid. He heard a knock on his door, looked out the peephole and saw “at least 20 police officers with guns drawn.” He recalled being scared, but thinking he should “definitely easily surrender and just let it happen.”

In a statement posted to social media in February, he told fans that the arrest, which led to an immediate hospitalization, “undoubtedly saved my life.”

These days, Matt’s humility is palpable. Projecting not a trace of the peacocking energy he’s known for onstage — where his sweaty, cathartic performances have drawn comparisons to Iggy Pop ( another collaborator ) — he spoke softly and sincerely, recounting the depths of his ordeal with a mixture of self-deprecation and heartfelt contrition. He admitted that, even before his mental health crisis, his investment in his role as a rock frontman had begun to overwhelm him.

“I became more and more convinced I was this persona,” he said. “And to go from a person who creates a fictional character to perform for entertainment purposes, and then to believe that character, it’s a leap — and it’s dangerous.”

Brad, 42, saw his brother’s extroverted tendencies taking shape from an early age. Inspired by their father, a devoted amateur musician, the two would attempt their own performances around the house. One time a young Matt picked up their father’s hot soldering iron, thinking it was a microphone. He “scalded and blistered his entire hand,” Brad remembered. “But, you know, it didn’t scare him away from a mic.”

The brothers moved on to various adolescent bands and formed Cage the Elephant in 2006 along with the bassist Daniel Tichenor and the drummer Jared Champion (the band also includes the guitarist Nick Bockrath and the keyboardist Matthan Minster; the guitarist Lincoln Parish left in 2013). Across their early albums, they honed their sound from a garage-y stomp to something more polished and pop-friendly.

As their reach has grown, so has their creative ambition. John Hill, a seasoned producer who worked on both “Neon Pill” and its Grammy-winning 2019 predecessor, “Social Cues,” praised the band’s openness to new methods of writing, such as collaging together elements of various songs to create a more compelling whole.

“They’re not super rigid about, ‘Well, it has to just sound like us all playing in the room together,’” he said, “which I think has enabled them to explore some different sonics and ideas outside of just being a rock ’n’ roll band.”

Brad confirmed Cage the Elephant’s desire to break free from categories and expected ways of working, borne out in the sleeker sound of its recent records. “We’ve been categorized as a rock band, or an alternative band, or whatever, but I really like the genre-less kind of mind-set,” he said. “I feel like that’s kind of the way forward.”

The band’s steady rise has been rooted in its songwriting, as well as Matt’s powerful ability to connect. Beck recalled a time when, following one of the singer’s signature crowd walks, Matt ended up sitting and talking with some kids in the audience. “He would just be out there completely obliterating any kind of fourth wall,” Beck said.

Strolling out to a Greenpoint pier, where he watched the ferries come and go on a sun-dappled East River, Matt giddily recalled the time Cage the Elephant opened for the Rolling Stones in Paris in 2017. Before one show, while clad in his revealing stage attire, he’d been summoned to meet Mick Jagger. “I walked into his room basically just wearing a thong,” he said, cracking up at the memory.

But the band’s recent concerts have felt even more special for the singer. During the handful of shows Cage the Elephant has performed since he has been able to finally lay down his literal and figurative baggage, he said, “I felt this overwhelming sense of having experienced something that helped me to see outside of what can be an illusion in and of itself: fame and success, and things like that.”

“It’s nice to have experienced something that was so shattering,” he continued, “that maybe that illusion isn’t as powerful.”
