1 Day in Mumbai: The Perfect Itinerary for First-Timers (2024)

1 day in Mumbai

If you’re planning on spending 1 day in Mumbai (formerly known as Bombay) as a first-timer, then you have come to the right place!

Often dubbed the “City of Dreams”, Mumbai is famous for being the place where Bollywood movies are made. This is one of India’s major cosmopolitan cities and there are plenty of things to do here.

To be honest, you could easily spend weeks exploring this city, as it’s HUGE. If you’re short on time, like I was during my visit to Mumbai, however, one day will be enough to see the highlights.

So, from seeing the Gateway to India, one of the country’s most famous landmarks to exploring ancient caves and visiting markets, here are the best things to do in Mumbai in 1 day.

14 Best Things to Do in Mumbai in 1 Day

This itinerary is quite packed, so I recommend leaving early in the morning.

It’s good to know that #3 the Elephanta Caves, #6 the Prince of Wales Museum and #12 the slums are the most time-consuming places to visit in Mumbai. It all depends on your personal pace and interest, but I would suggest picking just one or two of these places so that you don’t have to hurry.

1. See the Gateway of India

Gateway of India in Mumbai

The Gateway of India is one of India’s most famous landmarks . This monument was built in Indo-Saracenic style in 1924. It commemorates the landing of King George V and Queen Mary, who were the first British monarchs to visit India in 1911.

Later, this arch-formed monument was used as a symbolic ceremonial entrance for the Viceroys and the new Governors of Bombay. The Gateway of India overlooks the Arabian Sea, making it a good place for a symbolic entrance to the country.

Not that as this is Mumbai’s most popular tourist attraction, it tends to be quite crowded and if you’re a foreigner, people will ask for plenty of selfies!

Although the Gateway of India is impressive, my favourite thing about the place was the view of the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel, which brings me to my next point.

2. Check out the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel

Taj Mahal Palace in Mumbai

You cannot miss this majestic building when you’re at the Gateway of India (#1 on this list). This is from where you will have the best view of the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel .

This luxurious hotel opened its doors in 1903 and, as you might have guessed, it was named after the famous Taj Mahal . Over the years, it has housed many famous guests, including presidents and movie stars.

The building in which the Taj is set is truly magnificent, and it’s good to know that, even if you don’t stay there, you can still visit the hotel’s shops and restaurants. There’s an entrance on the right side of the building.

3. Head to the Elephanta Caves

Elephanta Caves in Mumbai

Located on Elephanta Island, the Elephanta Caves is a UNESCO World Heritage site right off the coast of Mumbai.

This small island is home to a collection of cave temples mainly dedicated to the Hindu god Lord Shiva. They date back to the mid-5th to 6th centuries AD and they’re full of beautiful rock-cut stone sculptures.

You can take a ferry from the Gateway of India (#1 on this list) to reach the Elephanta Caves. Do note that it’s a 1-hour boat ride to reach the island and you will have to make the journey back too. So, this is quite a time-consuming place to visit.

I decided to skip the Elephanta Caves because I only had 1 day in Mumbai and I was on a budget (a ticket costs 600 INR for foreigners + 260 INR for the ferry). I visited the Bandra neighbourhood instead, which is a nice alternative if you’re on a budget too (but more about this later).

4. Have lunch at Leopold Café

Leopold Café in Bombay

Located just a 10-minute walk from the Gateway of India, Leopold Cafe is one of Mumbai’s most iconic cafes . It opened its doors in 1871 and was named after King Leopold of Belgium , although Iranis opened it.

This cafe gained popularity after it was mentioned in the famous novel Shantaram and its sequel, The Mountain Shadow by Gregory David Roberts, and it’s a great place to take a break, have a drink or eat something. I had cheesecake here and it was delicious.

Sadly, Leopold Cafe was also a target during the Mumbai terrorist attacks of 2008 , and 10 people lost their lives here. The restaurant was severely damaged during the attacks but it has been restored.

5. Pass by Regal Cinema

Regal Cinema in Mumbai

Regal Cinema is just a 5-minute walk from Leopold Café (#4 on this list) and this is one of Mumbai’s oldest movie theatres . It opened its doors in 1933 and it’s one of the few old-style movie theaters that still operates in the city.

If you’re looking for a fun activity in the evening, going to the movies in Mumbai is one of these Indian travel bucket list experiences and Regal Cinema is a great choice. After all, Mumbai is the city where Bollywood movies are made.

6. Visit the Prince of Wales Museum (Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangralaya)

Prince of Wales Museum in Bombay

If you’re a museum lover or a history buff, the Prince of Wales Museum, now called Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangralaya (but that’s a mouthful), is one of the best places to visit in Mumbai.

This museum was founded by the British in the early 20th century and showcases the history of India from prehistoric to modern times . You will find thousands of artefacts here, which are categorized into three sections: art, archaeology and natural history.

Not only is this an interesting museum to visit, but the building it’s set in is quite spectacular too. It was designed in an Indo-Saracenic style of architecture by Scottish architect George Wittet.

7. Take a stroll in Oval Maidan and see the High Court and University

Oval Garden in Bombay

Oval Maidan is a 15-minute walk from the Prince of Wales Museum and this is a nice place for a short stroll. This is a recreational ground where locals love to hang out and play cricket.

The High Court of Bombay and the University of Mumbai are located right next to Oval Maidan and these are some pretty impressive pieces of architecture. Both of these buildings date back to the 19th century and they’re worth checking out while you’re there!

8. Pass by the Flora Fountain

Flora Fountain in Mumbai

The Flora Fountain is just a 10-minute walk from Oval Maidan (#7 on this list) and it’s on the way to the Victoria Terminus (#9 on this list).

Although this is not one of these places in Mumbai that you absolutely have to see, it is a nice place to stop by if you’re in the neighbourhood. If you’re short on time, however, skip it.

Built in 1864, the Flora Fountains depicts the Roman goddess of flowers (Flora) and it’s surrounded by some beautiful heritage buildings.

9. Admire the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus ( Victoria Terminus)

Victoria Terminus in Bombay

The Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus is one of these places that you cannot miss, even if you’re in Mumbai for just 1 day! This is my favourite piece of architecture in the city.

Formerly called the Victoria Terminus, this train terminus was built by the British in 1887 and it’s a UNESCO World Heritage site. It was built in Victorian Revival architecture with some traditional Indian elements blended into it.

Make sure not to miss the BMC building while you’re here (though it would be hard to). This 19th-century building is located right across the Victoria Terminus and it’s quite impressive too. BMC stands for Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation and this is the governing civic body of Mumbai.

10. Visit Crawford Market

Crawford Market in Bombay

One of the best things to do in 1 day in Mumbai is to visit one of the city’s markets. Crawford Market, for example, is very close to the Victoria Terminus (#9 on this list) and this is one of the city’s best places to shop.

You will find anything here, from fruits and spices to beauty products and jewellery. This may just be the perfect place to find some nice Indian souvenirs !

Do make sure to negotiate the price before buying something here (you might want to do some research on how much something costs too) because vendors will quote very high prices if you’re a foreigner.

11. Stop by Dhobi Ghat

Dhobi Ghat in Mumbai

Dhobi Ghat is one of the most unique places to visit in Mumbai! This is believed to be the world’s biggest outdoor laundry place . There’s a similar place in Kolkata , but I found out about it too late. I will make sure to visit it next time I’m there, though, because I loved visiting Dhobi Ghat in Mumbai.

Mumbai’s Dhobi Ghat opened its doors in 1890 and, ever since, washers have been cleaning clothes and linen from hotels and hospitals here. If you visit the place in the early afternoon, you will see how the clothes are hanging outside to dry.

Dhobi Ghat is located right next to the Mahalaxmi railway station, so it’s pretty easy to reach. You will have a good view of the ghat from the station’s bridge.

12. See the slums

Slums of Mumbai

Mumbai is home to Asia’s largest slum – Dharavi , and it’s possible to visit this place. This has become an increasingly popular thing to do ever since the movie Slumdog Millionaire came out.

Visiting slums is a bit controversial, though, and there are pros and cons to it. On one side, it can help boost the economy if done ethically, but it can also feel a bit voyeuristic.

I chose not to visit the slums of Mumbai, as I have visited many slums in the past ( Jamestown in Ghana , for example, was a great experience) and I’m not sure how I feel about Dharavi becoming more and more of a tourist attraction. This being said, I saw some slums when I took the train in Mumbai. You will see some around Bandra Station, for example.

It’s completely up to you whether you visit Mumbai’s slums or not, though. In all honesty, if I hadn’t visited so many slums already, I would have visited Dharavi. It’s estimated that over 50% of the population of Mumbai lives here , so it will give you a better understanding of what life is like for many people in this city.

Although you can visit the slums by yourself, if you go on an ethical tour, the money will be used to benefit the people who live there. This is a nice way to give something back to this community.

Note that it takes around 2,5 hours to visit the slums. So if you have just 1 day in Mumbai, it’s better to skip the Elephanta Caves (#2 on this list) and/or the Prince of Wales Museum (#6 on this list) if you decide to head here.

13. Watch the sunset at Marine Drive

Marine Drive in Mumbai

Marine Drive borders the Arabian Sea and it’s home to a long promenade which is a popular place to watch the sunset. Head to the Queen’s Necklace , from where you will have a view of Mumbai’s skyline, for the best view.

If you’re in Mumbai for just 1 day, I wouldn’t do as I do and not plan to walk the entire promenade. This is a 3.6-km long walk I slightly underestimated when I was in Mumbai. Although it is a nice place, I think the area around the Oval Maiden and Flora Fountain is a better place for a stroll. It will give you a better understanding of what Mumbai is all about too.

Note that, if you’re visiting the Queen’s Necklace for sunset, you probably won’t be the only one there as this is Mumbai’s most popular sunset spot. This being said, India is famous for being the world’s most populated country and being one of India’s major cities, there are no quiet sunset spots in Mumbai.

14. Relax at Chowpatty Beach

Chowpatty Beach in Bombay

Chowpatty Beach is argued to be one of the best beaches in Mumbai and this is a nice place to relax a little after a busy day of exploring.

If you come here in the evening, the beach will be full of food stalls and locals enjoying some time off with friends. This is a nice place to soak up the atmosphere and end your day in Mumbai.

Note that swimming is strongly discouraged at Mumbai’s beaches because the water is very polluted.

If You Have More Time

Street Art in Bandra, Bombay

How long it will take to visit the places mentioned above depends on your personal pace, so if you have more time (or if you would like to switch things up a little according to your interests), the following places are worth visiting too:

  • Mani Bhavan: This is the house where Mahatma Gandhi lived from 1917 to 1934. It has been turned into a museum where you can learn more about this freedom fighter’s life.
  • Bandra: Often called the “Queen of Suburbs”, Bandra is the place where Bollywood actors, models and celebrities live. I strolled around this neighbourhood for a couple of hours and loved it!
  • Mumbai Film City: Mumbai Film City is the place to be if you would like to visit Bollywood film sets. It’s good to know that this place can only be visited by guided tour .
  • Four Seasons Rooftop Bar: If you would like to have a magnificent view of Mumbai’s skyline, the Four Seasons Rooftop Bar is the place to go! This is not the most affordable place to have a drink, but the view surely makes up for it.

I visited Haji Ali Dargah and the Siddhivinayak Mandir too, and if you’re short on time, these are places I would skip. Haji Ali is incredibly crowded and a little difficult to reach, and I think there are more impressive Hindu temples than the Siddhivinayak Mandir in India.

Haji Ali Dargah in Bombay

How to Get Around Mumbai

Many of the places mentioned in this post are within walking distance of each other. Some, however, are a bit further away. You can reach them by:

  • Taxi: Taking a taxi is the easiest way to get around Mumbai. I use the Ola app , which works just like Uber, to book taxis in India because taxi drivers tend to charge foreigners 10 times the normal price.
  • Train and metro: The Mumbai train and metro are super cheap. This is a good option if you’re on a budget, but it is a bit time-consuming.
  • Scooter or bicycle: If you feel comfortable driving in Mumbai yourself, you can rent a scooter or a bicycle for the day. This is a fun and sporty way to explore the city.

As this itinerary is quite packed, I would recommend taking a taxi to reach places that are further away. You could also hire a taxi for the day, this will help you save some valuable time.

If you would like to walk or get around using the train, I would either skip the Elephanta Caves or the Prince of Wales Museum as these are the most time-consuming activities in Mumbai.

Note that there are no rickshaws in South Mumbai but you will find these in other neighbourhoods.

Best Time to Visit Mumbai

The best time to visit Mumbai is in the winter, between October and February . This is when the weather will be at its best. I visited Mumbai in January and, although it was pretty hot, it was manageable.

You will find an overview of the weather that you can expect during each season below:

  • Winter (October to February): This is the best time to visit Mumbai. You can expect temperatures around 30°C (86°F) during winter.
  • Summer (March to May): Summers are hot and humid in Mumbai. While the temperature is similar to during the winter (32°C or 89.6°F), it feels much hotter due to the humidity.
  • Monsoon (June to September): While the monsoon season is slightly cooler (28° or 82.4°F), it’s very humid and on top of that, there will be a lot of rain, which can cause floods.

Where to Stay in Mumbai

There’s an abundance of hotels and hostels in Mumbai BUT this is the most expensive city in India , so if you’re on a tight budget, a dorm will probably be the best option.

If you only have 1 day in Mumbai, I recommend staying in Colaba (South Mumbai) or Bandra. This is where most tourist attractions are located. It all depends on your budget, but you will find my top recommendations below:

  • Taj Mahal Palace Hotel (⭐ 9.1,$$$): This is Mumbai’s most iconic hotel, and if you’re looking for a luxurious stay in the City of Dreams, this is the place to go! It’s located right across the Gateway of India and features magnificent rooms with sea, city or pool views.
  • Residence Hotel Fort (⭐ 8.3, $$): Ideally located within walking distance of Mumbai’s main tourist attractions, Residency Hotel Fort offers beautiful, clean rooms, and a delicious breakfast. It has all the amenities you might need.
  • Locomo Mumbai (⭐ 8.4, $): Located in Bandra, close to Juhu Beach, this hotel offers affordable dorm rooms as well as private rooms. The place is clean, the rooms are nice and the location is great.

1 Day in Mumbai: Final Thoughts

And voila, that was it, my complete itinerary for 1 day in Mumbai! I hope that this post has inspired you and that you will have an amazing time exploring this bustling city.

Although you could easily spend a week in Mumbai and explore different neighbourhoods every day, one day will give you just enough time to see this city’s highlights.

Happy exploring!

A 3-4 hour drive, Pune offers a lot of historic sites to visit and authentic Maharashtrian Food.

Pawna lake is 117 km away from Mumbai. It is a place famous for its nature, green hills and a great day trip from Mumbai to change the scenery.

Hardly a couple of hours’ drive from Mumbai with decent roads, one can unwind their troubled minds by the sea and maybe write a few pages of a book that they happen to be working on.

Try the ferry ride from Mumbai, boarding at Gateway of India early morning and reach Mandwa and then take a bus service to Alibagh – beach destination and great to hog on seafood.

Extra Tips Before Visiting Mumbai

The city dwellers are compassionate but at the same time are always game to set out on a new adventure at any point of the day. The city is a lover of pets and owing to the dwindling pet population, the youth of the city always try to create awareness about taking extra care of its pet dogs, cats, hamsters and other pets through its events that are pet focussed and dole out unconditional love to these four-legged angels.

  • Traffic Rules are strict. Don’t argue with the cops.
  • Always carry loose change with you to give to the beggars or they will pester you till the signal turns green.
  • As per the new decree by the government, the malls and restaurants in Mumbai will now be open 24 hours.
  • Be careful with your belongings like laptops, cameras and cell phones.
  • Learn how to bargain like a pro.
  • Keep your pet on a leash.

Mumbai Itinerary – How To Spend 1 Day In Mumbai

Posted on Last updated: 24 April 2024

Categories India , Itineraries

Mumbai, formerly called Bombay, is located on India’s west coast and is the country’s largest city with a population of over 21 million.

Known as the commercial capital of India, Mumbai attracts people from all over India looking to make their fortunes, resulting in a mix of religions and cultures all living harmoniously together.

It is has beautiful parks, beaches and iconic landmarks such as the Gateway of India. Along with a mix of old and new architecture, markets, street food, shops, restaurants, cafes and much more.

Building a one day in Mumbai itinerary is tough, with so much to see and do. So we’ve narrowed down all the best parts, into how to do Mumbai in a day.

Table of Contents

How To Get Around Mumbai

Getting around Mumbai couldn’t be easier. There are generally 3 options:

The train system in Mumbai is the most common form of local transport.

However, you must be aware that the trains running through the city are hugely over-crowded, particularly during rush hour.

The fare for train journeys in Mumbai starts from just 5 Rupees, to a maximum of 200 Rupees, depending on the distance between your stations.

Tickets can be bought at each station by paying with coins at the ticket from the counters.

A quick tip if you’re looking to avoid the queues is to cough up for first class. It may be the difference of 50 Rupees but could save you a lot of time standing around.

Just be aware that the carriages on the Mumbai trains are divided between ‘Ladies’ and ‘General’, so don’t get mixed up in the wrong compartment.

Taxi/Tuk Tuk

Mumbai taxis start from 22 Rupees, and are easy to hail anywhere in the city. Often referred to as Kaali-Peeli Cabs, just keep your eye out for the little black and yellow Fiat’s.

They are fairly inexpensive, and the drivers tend to use the meter for the most part so you should get a fair price.

The traffic situation is never good in Mumbai, therefore most people stick to using the trains.

The other option is to jump in a Tuk Tuk (or Rickshaw as known in India).

These are supposed to start even lower at 18 Rupees, however you’ll rarely find a rickshaw driver using the metre.

Haggling is always a starting point of conversation with rickshaws, so have your wits about you and be sure to agree a price before you get in the vehicle.

Uber is also available in some parts of the city for a fixed price option.

Some of the best days out we’ve had in Mumbai have been on private tours.

There’s even a Mumbai: Experience Local Transport, Sightseeing & Lunch tour available. For those that wish to experience the hustle and bustle of the train system without the stress of it all.

For those short on time, or that prefer everything to be organised for them, there are some awesome tours on Get Your Guide available to book in advance.

From food tours, to river rides and walking tours, there’s plenty to keep you busy in the bustling city!

Best Time To Visit Mumbai

The best time to visit Mumbai is probably during the winter months from December to March. This is when the weather is dry and sunny but not overbearingly hot.

The temperatures can get very hot from April onwards, with monsoon season generally during the months of June, July and August. This is when there are torrential downpours and high humidity.

Remember, this is just a guide, so you may want to mix it up and add/subtract different attractions.

Mumbai Itinerary Day 1

Dharavi slums.

The first destination we recommend on your one day in Mumbai itinerary are the infamous Dharavi Slums .

Dharavi is a locality in Mumbai, considered to be one of the largest slums in the world.

With a total area of just 2.1 square kilometres, and home to a population of around 700,000 people, you can imagine how compact and hectic the living quarters are.

To reach Dharavi the best options are to hire a rickshaw if you’re close, or jump on the train and get off at Mahim Junction.

From Mahim Junction you’ll be able to see the slums, and simply cross the railway to enter.

We opted to visit alone, and the people in the neighbourhood couldn’t have been more welcoming.

We received a few funny looks passing over the wrong side of the train tracks, but once we reached the heart of the community we were greeted by smiling faces!

If you do wish to have a guide, there are many tours available. However, just be sure to find out exactly where the money is going.

One of the top recommendations is the Ethical Dharavi Walking Tour , which promises that profits are re-invested in community initiatives such as education, skills development and healthcare projects.

”Learn the challenges of migrants as they settled into this community, their entrepreneurial stories and how to debunk the negative stereotypes of slums.”

Children ran towards us open armed, families invited us into their homes and even offered to cook food for us. Supposedly the most dangerous part of the city, turned out to be our favourite.

A great start to Mumbai in a day and a must on your overall India itinerary !

Dharavi Slums Mumbai In A Day

Gateway Of India & The City

From Dharavi the best way to reach the city is via the Suburban Train from Mahim Junction to Marine Lines.

Trains run every 4 minutes, and the journey takes roughly 30 minutes in total.

It will drop you within walking distance of Marine Drive. A 3.6-kilometre-long promenade that links Malabar Hill to Churchgate.

For the majority of your one day in Mumbai itinerary you’re going to want to explore around these areas.

If you’re looking for a guided tour of the city, with some local knowledge thrown in, we highly recommend the Mumbai: Private Full-Day Sightseeing Tour of the City .

This 10-hour trip takes you around the essential sights, while learning all about Mumbai’s history and culture.

One of the most popular destinations when visiting Mumbai in a day is the Gateway Of India. Built in December 1911 to welcome the King and Queen of England.

King George Pacham and Queen Mary were the first British monarch’s to visit Mumbai, and the monument has stood proudly ever since.

The monument has also been referred to as the Taj Mahal of Mumbai, and one of the top things to do in India .

Other popular destinations in the city include Victoria Terminus, Elephanta Caves, Marine Drive, the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel, Crawford Market, Malabar Hill, and Bollywood’s Film City.

If you’re looking to visit Elephanta Caves you can purchase ferry tickets from the Gateway of India. The ferry takes roughly 1 hour to reach the island.

For those that prefer everything to be organised for them, the Elephanta Caves: Private Half-Day Tour from Mumbai includes hotel pickup and drop-off, a tour guide, your entrance tickets, ferry tickets and train tickets.

Eat Local Street Food

At some point on your one day in Mumbai itinerary you’re going to want to try the cuisine!

So we recommend exploring the streets of Mumbai in a day, and getting stuck into the local snacks.

But what is Mumbai Chaat? – Chaat is a savory snack originated in India, typically served at the road-side from stalls or food carts. With its origins in Uttar Pradesh, chaat has become immensely popular in the rest of the Indian subcontinent.

From the traditional samosas, to the Asian inspired momos, go out and grab some cheap street food!

One of the top ways to do so is on a Mumbai: Hidden Street Eats Tour by Train . You’ll experience the culture of India through the vibrant street food scene of Mumbai, with this tasting tour of local on-the-go snacks.

Plus you get to travel from location to location by train and experience the city like a local.

There’s even a 4-Hour Evening Street Food Tour , for the real foodies visiting Mumbai.

We couldn’t get enough of the Indian spices, and we’re sure you’ll love them too on your Mumbai in a day tour!

The Perfect One Day In Mumbai Itinerary

The Best Places to Visit in Mumbai in One Day

The Best Things to See in One Day in Mumbai

I consider myself to be a pretty experienced traveler (I’ve been to more than 70 countries solo) but still, I was overwhelmed by Mumbai. I stayed in the city for several days, but I never quite felt like I got the appeal of India’s most populous city, where traditional “tourist attractions” seemed to be few and very far between… without any kind of tourist-friendly public transportation system connecting them. Thus, as I look back at my own two-month India trip, I actually wish I’d spent less time in Mumbai.  In fact, just one day would have been enough, which is why I wanted to help other solo travelers in India by writing this guide to the best places to visit in Mumbai in one day.

mumbai trip plan for 1 day

Getting Oriented in Mumbai

Mumbai is a huge city – in fact, I read somewhere that if you took the eight smallest countries in the world and put them together, combined they would still be smaller than Mumbai!  Unfortunately, Mumbai does not have a tourist-friendly public transportation system, so if you have one day in Mumbai it makes sense to concentrate your sightseeing in one area of the city. In my opinion, the best area to focus on for one day is Colaba and its immediate surroundings.

There are a few different peninsulas in Mumbai and Colaba is at the southern tip of one of them. Many of Mumbai’s most famous landmarks are located in this neighborhood, and it has enough things to see and do to keep you busy for a full day, without needing to venture further afield.

That being said, even though the attractions on this itinerary are close together and within comfortable walking distance, Mumbai can be confusing to navigate. Make sure you download an offline Google Map of Mumbai , and it’s even better if you have an Indian SIM card (or an eSim) in your phone.

My one-day Mumbai itinerary assumes that you slept the previous night in Colaba and will be ready to start sightseeing early in the morning on your first (and only) full day in the city. To make this work, you might want to consider one of the following Colaba hotels:

  • Budget – Backpacker Cowies is a budget hostel with a common room, open-air terrace and activities like walking tours and event nights. I stayed here back when it was called Backpacker Panda.
  • Mid-Range – Competitively-priced Ascot Hotel books up early and serves a delicious Indian-style breakfast.
  • Luxury – The waterfront Taj Mahal Tower Mumbai is the most iconic hotel in all of India.
  • Boutique – I can also personally recommend Abode Bombay , an independent boutique hotel in Colaba. However, you should make sure (!) to book one of the higher-end rooms with a window and private bathroom.

So, you’ve spent the night in Colaba and you are ready to spend one day in Mumbai exploring your surroundings?  Let’s get started!

#1 – Sassoon Docks

Visiting the Sassoon Docks Fish Market in Colaba Mumbai in One Day

The Sassoon Docks open daily around 5:00 am, making it the perfect first stop for jet-lagged travelers who aren’t yet on Indian time.  The earlier you arrive the more action you’ll see, as trawlers dock at the pier and begin unloading their catch of the day. On the dock, hundreds of workers, mostly women, peel shellfish and sort through the rest of the bounty.

This isn’t for show – these are real people going about the hard work of getting food onto people’s plates. So, be conscientious and respectful about where you step, who you photograph and how you interact with the people who work here. You may also find that your shoes get a little bit fishy, so consider stopping by before breakfast, then returning to your hotel to rinse the soles of your shoes and fuel up for the rest of your one day in Mumbai.

#2 – Gateway of India

See the Gateway to India with Our One Day in Mumbai Itinerary

From the Sassoon Docks you can follow the Colaba Causeway (a popular shopping street) north to The Gateway of India.  The walk should take about ten minutes, and along the way you’ll pass Leopold Cafe, which was immortalized in the novel Shantaram . Turn towards the water immediately after passing Leopold Cafe to reach the Gateway of India.

This triumphal arch was built in 1924 to commemorate the visit of King George V and Queen Mary ten years earlier, and is now considered to be a symbol of independence from British colonial rule. When I visited Mumbai the area immediately around the arch was controlled by security, and you had to queue (one line for women, one line for men) and go through a bag check before you could get up close.

#3 – The Taj Mahal Palace and Tower

Taj Palace Hotel in Colaba, Mumbai, India

If you slept here last night, you’ll already be very familiar with India’s most famous hotel.  Built by the industrialist who founded the Tata Group (visit their tea plantations in the hills of Kerala ). I love the story behind this hotel, which is that Tata built the hotel out of spite, after being refused service at a different, “whites only” luxury hotel. That hotel is no longer around, but the Taj Mahal Palace and Tower is still famous around the world.

I happened to be in Mumbai on the anniversary of the 2008 bombings, and security at the hotel was on high alert. They weren’t letting sightseers into the property, but on most days it’s possible to go into the lobby to see the shops, restaurants and luxurious interior. If you’re staying here, the hotel also offers a daily, guided “Heritage Walk” for guests, where you learn about the history of the property and explore behind the scenes.

Optional: Boat Trip to the Elephanta Caves

Excursion to Elephanta Caves in Mumbai

If you’re already feeling overwhelmed by the crowds (I don’t blame you!), you can escape the hustle and bustle of Mumbai on a boat trip to the Elephanta Caves. You can do it yourself on the public ferries that depart from the dock near the Gateway of India, but if you want to understand what you’re seeing I would recommend joining this affordable guided tour that departs daily around 10:30.

Elephanta is an island located about an hour away from Mumbai.  If it wasn’t so hazy you could see it from the shore, but with the air quality today that is usually unlikely. The main attractions on the island are the remarkable caves, accessed via 100 steps, which were turned into a series of Hindu temples. The stone carvings inside date back more than a thousand years, and are protected as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Most travelers spend about an hour and a half to two hours on the island before heading back on the ferry. If you’re up for a walk, you can climb the hill near the temples for panoramic views of the island and distant views of Mumbai (if it’s clear).

If you choose to go out to the Elephant Caves it will impact how many of the other sights on this itinerary you’ll be able to see. Don’t worry about it – whether you go to the islands or stay on the mainland you’ll still get a good overview of Mumbai in just one day with this plan.

#4 – National Gallery of Modern Art and the Jehangir Art Gallery

National Gallery of Modern Art in Mumbai, India on a One-Day Itinerary

As you walk further northwest from the Gateway of India you begin to leave Colaba and arrive in the district of Kala Ghoda (“Black Horse” – look for the namesake statue). This neighborhood is home to many striking colonial buildings and a handful of the country’s most important art galleries.

Located across the street from one another, the National Gallery of Modern Art and the Jehangir Art Gallery are two places to consider visiting with your one day in Mumbai.  The Jehangir Art Gallery was the first contemporary art museum in the city, and today it is free to enter. The National Gallery of Modern Art has five galleries that display works from their permanent collections as well as temporary exhibits from Indian and international artists.

#5 – Flora Fountain

The Flora Fountain the Fort District of Mumbai, India

Walking a few blocks further north will plant you in the heart of Fort, another historic district in Mumbai. The very first East India Company was situated here, giving the neighborhood its name.

There are quite a few striking colonial facades at the entrance to this area, including the Asiatic Society Library and Saint Thomas’ Cathedral, which is believed to be the oldest British building still standing today.  You’ll want to turn west at Horniman Circle and walk towards the Flora Fountain, shown above. The fountain is named after Flora, the Roman goddess of flowers and nature, who can be seen atop the 1864 monument.

Some other travel guides will tell you keep walking north from here to see the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus, which was formerly known as the Victoria Terminus. This is definitely a beautiful railway station, but it’s a bit out of the way and the Churchgate Station is nearly as beautiful.

#6 – Churchgate Railway Station

Churchgate Railway Station in Mumbai

Continue walking a few more blocks west until you reach Churchgate Railway Station. This is the southern terminus of Mumbai’s Western Railway Line, which connects the Colaba peninsula to the north part of the city and the suburbs beyond.  Millions of people pass through this station every day, so I recommend you just look at the architecture (inspired by a Swiss chalet) rather than getting lost in the crowds inside.

#7 – Marine Drive

Marine Drive in Mumbai, India

Exploring Mumbai in one day gives you an introduction to the city, but you don’t truly understand the city’s scale until you reach Marine Drive, the waterfront promenade with views for miles (well, technically for just over three kilometers).

As you reach the waterfront you will pass Brabourne Stadium , a popular spot to watch a cricket match. I believe that you can buy tickets online at this site, although no matches are showing at the time of publication (March 2024). One block up the street you’ll also find Natural Ice Cream, the city’s most popular ice cream shop. Strolling along the water just isn’t the same without a fresh mango or coconut ice cream.

If you’re wearing comfortable walking shoes you can follow the pedestrian pathway north to Girgaon Chowpatty, one of the most popular hangout spots for local youths and families. Don’t swim at the beach here – the water is not clean – but do relax and observe local families enjoying their late afternoon.

#8 – Return to Colaba for Dinner

Street Food Vendors in Mumbai, India

I haven’t talked much about food in this guide, so I’ll highlight some local eating options here. Personally, I found that the heat in India meant that after breakfast I wasn’t really hungry again until it was time for an early dinner.

One great option for dinner tonight is joining a Mumbai Street Food Tour , which departs around 5:30 pm from the Churchgate Railway Station. I loved taking street food tours in India because the guides always know which street food vendors are hygienic and safe, and they are able explain all of the ingredients, techniques and cultural references that go into India’s rich cuisine.  On this tour, you will sample at least sixteen different street foods!

If you can’t make it to Churchgate Railway Station for 5:30, I recommend jumping in an Uber, Ola or taxi back to the center of Colaba, where there are lots of good restaurants to choose from.  Some to check out include:

  • Indigo Deli – I had a really good flatbread pizza here, and they also have other international dishes like pasta, risotto and burgers.
  • The Table – Frequently voted as one of the best restaurants in the world, The Table is probably one of the most affordable places to try world-class cuisine. Reserve your table in advance.
  • Koyla Ethnic Cafe – You’re paying for the views at this rooftop restaurant that only opens for dinner as the sun goes down.
  • Ayub’s Restaurant – If you’re on a tight budget this take-out shop serves vegetarian and meat-based wraps, rolls and biryanis to go.

But really, you can walk around the well-lit main streets of Colaba safely in the evening, check out the different restaurants and see which ones have the atmosphere and menu that looks good to you.

After dinner you can relax with a cocktail at one of the classy bars around the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel, or you could watch a Bollywood movie at the Regal Cinema, an Art Nouveau landmark, or the more modern Inox Laserplex. You don’t have to speak Hindi to have fun at a Bollywood movie, trust me!

Reflecting on Mumbai in One Day

I promise you, this itinerary for seeing Mumbai in one day is manageable, even for a novice traveler, and it takes you to a great variety of different sights and attractions.

If there’s something specific you want to see outside of the area I’ve described in this post, I would recommend traveling to and from that place in a taxi, Uber or Ola, as the public transportation system really is designed for commuters, not tourists. Some attractions that are further afield include Haji Ali’s Tomb, Malabar Hill and the Dharavi Slums, which were featured in “Slumdog Millionaire” (only go as part of a guided tour ).

I spent two months traveling solo around India, and based on my experiences I narrowed down a list of the 15 best cities to visit in India if it’s your first trip to the country.

I also know that a lot of first-time visitors to India have questions before their trip. I wrote down all of my own India travel questions before left home, and then I answered them when my India trip came to a close.

14 best places to visit in mumbai (bombay) in one day.

Bradley Williams

Mumbai really is a city like no other.

Even compared to other major tourist destinations in India, such as Jodhpur , Jaipur and Udaipur , Mumbai really is in its own league of craziness!

As soon as you step off the train, bus or plane, you’re engulfed by the sites, sounds and smells that Mumbai has to offer.

There are more than 18 million people living in Mumbai and it almost feels like the city is going to explode!

And amidst the overwhelming mass of people, buildings and cars, there are still so many incredible places to visit in Mumbai in one day .

In fact, there are so many that it’s hard to know where to start and what to choose to do.

Well, after spending 3 days there, we managed to whittle it all down to 14 great things that can all easily be done in one day.

Other than that, we would recommend leaving as soon after, the noises and smells can all be a little too much.

Travellerspoint

What's the best way to get to Mumbai?

If you're backpacking through India , then the best way to get to Mumbai will either be via plane or train.

If you're coming internationally, Mumbai has an international airport and you can check Skyscanner for all the latest prices.

If you're already in India, then you can use the very well established train network to get around. Or you could opt for bus which tends to be longer.

When we are in Asia we always use 12Go Asia for all our transport needs. You can book buses, trains and shuttles online at the click of a button. So if you need transport to Mumbai from Goa, or Mumbai to Delhi , then check out their website here.

How about getting around Mumbai?

OK so, if you really want to see all of these awesome Mumbai attractions in one day, then you need a solid plan for getting around.

The city itself, though not incredibly large, is very busy.

Also, many of these most popular things to do in Mumbai are distributed all across the city.

So yes, to really experience all of Mumbai in just one day, you’re going to need to travel from North to South.

The good new is, that it’s entirely possible. So here are your 6 best options:

1. Take a day tour

It's possible to purchase space on a tour that visits many of the best sites I've talked about below, plus others.

And if you're not keen on arranging your own transportation, it's a great way to get to see the whole city.d

Plus, if your chosen tour doesn't include any of the things discussed below, then you can simply grab a taxi to those afterwards.

Here's a look at some tours that would be worthwhile checking out.

Plus, by booking them online now, then you save yourself a lot of unnecessary time and stress once you arrive in Mumbai.

  • This full day tour takes you to all the best spots and is excellent value. Book it here.
  • This half day tour is perfect for those on a time limit but still takes you to the best sights. Book it here.

2. Hire taxis

This was our chosen method of getting around India, simply because they are everywhere and the most comfortable way to get about.

You can hail taxis almost everywhere. However, do expect many of them to try and rip you off.

Instead, I recommend downloading either Ola or Uber and using those where possible.

We used Uber almost every time, for 3 key reasons:

  • You know you're getting a good quality car (sometimes even with air-con!)
  • The drivers are usually far safer
  • You get the lowest prices

As a base rate, expect to pay around 550 rupees minimum to get from the Gateway Of India in the south of Mumbai to the Mahakali Caves further in the north.

3. Use the metro

If you're travelling long distances through the city, then the metro should be by far the cheapest and fastest way to get around Mumbai.

They have quite an extensive rail network that allows you to cut quickly to many of the most popular tourist destinations.

I’ll be honest, we didn't end up using this ourselves, so instead recommend checking out this really useful guide here .

4. Rent a moped

Normally, whenever we visit a city and have lots of places to see, our go-to choice of transport is a moped.

And in Mumbai, it is just as possible as everywhere else.

Once again, we didn't use this option, mainly because of the smell and traffic in Mumbai.

Honestly, the smell can be really awful in most parts of the city, so wouldn't recommend this for that one reason.

Yes, the traffic is pretty mental so don't choose this option unless you’re fully confident on a moped and have had plenty of practice.

When choosing your moped, be sure to check out this guide I wrote here .

5. Hire a driver

This might be your best choice as your driver will have an expert knowledge of the whole city and can then take you from stop to without you needing to waste time in between.

Pretty important as there’s a long list of great places to visit in Mumbai in one day and you’re really limited on time.

I can’t advise you on an exact price. Instead, your hotel/hostel owner should be able to recommend a fair price.

Be sure to ask a few drivers first and then haggle a little.

Hiring a tuk tuk (or rickshaw as they call them) will be cheaper. But, once again, you will need to put up with the smell and heat to a larger extent.

A great way to get around is with a private driver who speaks English in a well air conditioned car (trust me!) Well you can book a private driver for an excellent price here, and you can book for 4, 8 or 12 hours depending on all the sightseeing you want to do. Book it here.  ‍

That’s right, there’s no getting away from it … you're going to be doing a fair chunk of walking!

But don’t worry, I don’t expect you to walk all through the entire city.

But do be prepared to walk between many of the sites that are grouped closest together.

This works out cheaper, easier and allows you to experience even more of the city.

Below, I’ve laid out all of the best places to visit in Mumbai into a sort-of one day itinerary.

Meaning that you will find it possible to walk from quickly from many destinations.

If you've got just 1 day to explore Mumbai, then it’s important that you stay in the right sort of place.

But don’t worry, as well as planning your itinerary for you, we’re also going to tell you about the 3 best places to stay in Mumbai !

Each one is perfectly situated close to the action, but each one catering best to a certain budget.

Regardless of where you choose to stay, I recommend using Booking.com .

They offer the best rates and have the biggest supply of accommodation in Mumbai to choose from.

Best budget option for Mumbai: Backpacker Panda Appetite

This is where we stayed in Mumbai and I would definitely recommend it if you are young, looking to meet new people and on a budget.

We rarely stay in hostels, but decided to choose this because it was meant to have a great party atmosphere and be well situated for sightseeing.

It delivered everything we expected and they do indeed seem to host bar crawls almost every night!

Best mid-range option for Mumbai: Residency Hotel Fort

I picked this hotel because it offers good rates per night and has modern, well furnished rooms throughout.

More importantly, it is well-situated in Mumbai, close to the Gateway of India and the Queen’s Necklace.

And with so many places to visit in Mumbai in one day, location is of crucial importance.

Also, they come with plenty of good quality review scores, above and beyond what most other hotels in Mumbai seem to offer.

Best luxury option for Mumbai: Taj Mahal Palace Hotel

In itself, this is one of the best places to visit in Mumbai in one day, and you will find that I discuss it in more depth below.

But there really is no other hotel in Mumbai more luxurious and more iconic.

Numerous celebrities and dignitaries have stayed here over the years so, if money isn't an issue, then you will not go wrong here.

The 14 best places to visit in Mumbai In One Day

Right, let’s get down to it!

1. Visit Bollywood

Bollywood, India

Mumbai is the Bollywood capital of India and it’s an industry that really is booming!

Bollywood stars are just as famous in India as Hollywood actors are in the western world and every year, Bollywood movies seem to be getting better and better.

There are a number of areas of Mumbai to visit which allow you to explore Bollywood movies being filmed.

The biggest and most famous area for filming being Film City.

To get the full experience, it is possible to get a cheap tour. Such as this one here .

If you decide to stay in Mumbai for more than one day, then why not take the chance to be in a Bollywood movie?!

Apparently, they are always looking for extras and I would have relished this chance if we had more time in Mumbai.

TOUR: Get up and close with Bollywood film stars with a Bollywood Studio Tour. This seriously looks awesome! Book your tour here.

2. Immerse yourself in Mahalaxmi Dhobi Ghat

Mahalaxmi Dhobi Ghat, India

Ok this has to be the most surprising things to do in Mumbai, simply because it’s not your ordinary tourist attraction!

In fact, Mahalaxmi Dhobi Ghat is a large, open air laundromat!

It has been operational since the late 1800s and is a very popular spot for both tourists and locals alike.

It is widely considered the world’s largest open air laundromat, with close to 7,000 people working here!

In fact, around 200 families actually live in the ghat, with many of the families having done so for generations.

If you get it from the right angle, you can capture some wonderful shots of the ghat, with all of the hanging clothes creating a whirlwind of colours.

TOUR: You can take a half day tour to this area right here!

3. Check out a market (or several)

Chor Bazaar in Mumbai, India

There are a number of different markets located all across Mumbai.

We had only chance to visit a few, but you can find out more about all of the available ones in this article here .

In particular, I recommend checking out Chor Bazaar.

It is perhaps the most infamous market in Mumbai for a number of reasons.

But mainly because many of the items here are stolen!

That’s right, Chor Bazaar literally means “The Thieves Market”, seeing as so many traders here sell stolen goods.

It is best to arrive as early as possible, around 7:30 am, if you want to pick up some real bargains.

Oh, and be sure to haggle! Like most markets in India, the traders will try to rip tourists off.

As a rule of thumb, take whatever price they offer you and immediately half it to get a closer representation of an item’s true value.

TOUR: Check out the markets on an organised tour (at a super cheap price) so you can learn more about what you’re viewing and avoid getting ripped off! Book it here.

4. Bandra Fort (Castella de Aguada)

Bandra Fort, India

Bandra Fort is one of India’s oldest historical sites, having been built in the 1600s by the Portuguese, back when they controlled the region.

The fort itself isn't particularly large as it has suffered from years of disrepair prior to being repaired slightly in the early 2000s.

I recommend this because then you get to experience both of Mumbai’s coastlines in your day trip.

If it’s a clear, sunny day, then you should get some nice views from standing atop the fort.

Whilst here, you are also close to ...

5. Juhu Beach

Juhu Beach, India

In my opinion, the best beach for you to enjoy when in Mumbai is mentioned at the end of this list.

However, if you’ve got some time to spare and really do love beaches, then this is arguably the best beach in Mumbai to visit during a one day stop.

Apparently, this is also the most popular beach in Mumbai for celebrities.

So, if you’re a big fan of Bollywood cinema, you could always hang around here in search of some celebs …

Not that I’m sure what your chances of success are.

6. Check out the slums … from afar!

aerial view of mumbai

The film Slumdog Millionaire made famous the extent of Mumbai’s slums and what goes on in them.

And this has led to a massive rise in the number of tourists heading to cities like Mumbai in order to go on tours and see how people really live.

This falls into the category of Tourism Poverty which is something that Cazzy and I aren't a big fan of.

Sure, you can pay for a tour that takes you around the slums, but to me it doesn't seem right to wonder amongst the streets where people live simply to be fascinated by how difficult and different their lives might seem.

This leads to a whole host of problems on it’s own .

But ultimately, it’s up to you! If you do go for a tour, you can book one that gives all money received back into local community projects.

7. Prince of Wales Museum (Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya)

Prince of Wales museum

There are a few museums to be found in Mumbai, but this is the biggest.

It is divided up into 3 main sections for you to explore: natural history, art and archaeology.

In total, there are around 50,000 artifacts on show, with items coming from all over the world.

However, it is not just what is inside the museum that is so impressive.

The building itself is wonderfully built and the grounds in front of it are beautiful.

It's a great spot to stop and get some pictures, and the grounds feel like a haven away from the hustling, bustling city all around you.

Learn more about the Prince of Wales Museum here .

TOUR: If you wish, you can actually take a private museum tour as you wander through all the best museums Mumbai has to offer, including The Prince Of Wales Museum. Book your private tour here.

8. Head over to Gharapuri (Elephanta Island)

Elephanta caves, India

Gharapuri literally means “the island of caves”, which is what Elephanta Island is so famous for.

It houses a number of caves, mostly dedicated to Shiva, the Hindu God.

The Elephanta Caves are carved out of the island's rocks and you could spend a good few hours roaming around enjoying this peaceful little island.

Getting here takes about an hour by boat and you leave and return to a dock near to the Gateway of India (discussed below).

Ideally, you want to try and get across around midday, as the last ferry leaves at 2pm and there's a new things you need to see back on the mainland before the day is out.

TOUR: Make things easier on yourself and take a tour to the Elephanta islands! This one is highly rated and a great price. Book it here.

9. Be sure to visit the Gateway of India

gateway of india best place to visit in mumbai in one day

This is Mumbai's most famous tourist attraction, and you simply can’t afford to miss it.

It was built to celebrate the arrival of King George V on his visit to Mumbai in 1911.

Construction didn't actually finish until some years later, but the Gateway soon became an incredibly popular and famous spot in the city.

Due to its prime location in Mumbai’s harbour, it was the first thing that most people saw when landing in Mumbai and indeed India.

When you visit now, you have to first go through a security checkpoint.

There were terrorist attacks outside the nearby Taj Palace Hotel in 2008 and I think since then there have been restrictions in place.

As such, when you visit you are crowded in amongst hundreds of other tourists all trying to get the perfect shot. Which is virtually impossible when busy!

If you’re white, then you will constantly be hounded by locals asking to take their pictures with you.

Of course, you get this all over India, but this was the worst that we were bombarded anywhere!

10. Marvel at the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel

the taj palace hotel in mumbai

When you're visiting the Gateway Of India, it’s impossible to miss the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel.

It is located right next to it and is by far Mumbai’s most luxurious and inspiring hotel.

If you want to grab some photos, then I recommend doing so when you're inside of the Gateway Of India compound.

It’s hard to get a great angle for it other than when you are here.

The hotel was first opened in 1903 and has hosted numerous presidents and celebrities over the years.

It also served as a military hospital during WWII, so the building has a rather fascinating history.

11. Go for high lunch

Taj Mahal Palace Hotel, India

Once you’re done admiring it from the outside, why not head inside and treat yourself to a luxurious lunchtime meal at the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel?

That’s right, aside from being an incredibly attractive hotel from the outside, it is even more grand on the inside.

And, best of all, it’s open to the general public.

Meaning that, though you might not be able to stay there for a night ( at $350 a night, seriously check it out! ) then you can at least dine there.

However, be warned, it can get very busy. As such, it is recommended that you book ahead in advance.

Which you can do through their website here .

12. Check out some more historic architecture

Victoria Terminus, India

Mumbai actually plays host to some truly spectacular buildings.

If you’re a fan of architecture, then you’ll find plenty to see in Mumbai in one day.

Aside from other sites mentioned in this post, we got the chance to enjoy Victoria Terminus and Haji Ali Dargah .

But other popular buildings include:

  • Bombay High Court
  • Mount Mary’s Basilica
  • Knesset Eliyahoo Orthodox Jewish synagogue

13. Enjoy sunset at The Queen’s Necklace

queens necklace in mumbai

After a busy day spent exploring the city of Mumbai, the best way to end your sightseeing is by watching the sunset at The Queen’s Necklace.

This is a large semi-circular bay in the south of the city.

It's also known as Marine Drive and thousands of people flock here every night to relax on one of the beaches, stroll along the sea front and enjoy the breathtaking sunset.

If you like, you can relax in a small bar/restaurant on the beach and enjoy some food as well.

But I have a better recommendation of how to end your one day in Mumbai ...

14. Finally, finish up at The Hard Rock Cafe!

food at hard rock cafe in mumbai

I may be a bit biased here, but we are big fans of the Hard Rock Cafe!

We try to make it a point to visit the Hard Rock Cafe in most major cities and really enjoyed our trip to the one in Mumbai.

The prices were lower than what you’d find in other cities and the food was just as good!

The cocktails were also great and the atmosphere incredible.

In all, I believe we spent about $20 each for our meal and 3 cocktails.

In our opinion, you can't beat great-tasting American food and classic 80s rock!

So, if you’re the same, then be sure to head here for dinner.

They actually have two in the city and we visited this one .

5 top tips for making the most of your 1 day in Mumbai

gardens in mumbai

  • Try not to visit on a Friday - This is Muslim prayer day so many Muslim-owned businesses will be shut. Such as Chor Bazaar which lies right in the heart of Muslim Mumbai.
  • Get started as early as possible - In order to cram everything in, start as early as possible. With the one day Mumbai itinerary given above, you should have plenty of time to make it to the Queen’s Necklace in time for sunset (don’t miss this!)
  • Watch out for pickpockets - Mumbai is notoriously bad for pickpockets, especially when strolling through tightly packed areas like bazaars and markets. So make sure you hide your wallet, phone and any other expensive items. You could take it one step further and have a small padlock over your bag’s zip, so no one can get in unexpectedly.
  • Embrace the chaos - Mumbai is famed for how densely populated and chaotic it can seem. And ultimately, that is all a part of what makes the city so unique and charming.
  • Remember it gets hot! - Loose fitting clothing is best as it can get really hot when out exploring the packed city of Mumbai all day. For more info, check out our guide on what to wear in India .

Final thoughts

As long as you go into Mumbai with an open mind, there’s no reason why you can't have a truly wonderful time exploring the city.

Throughout this entire 1 day Mumbai itinerary, I have tried to give my honest opinion.

I don't mean to be harsh to the local people or to the city in general, but it does certainly have its downsides.

Notably, the smell.

But that is all just a part of visiting India.

The country is famously an explosion of the senses and Mumbai is one of the best places to visit in India, because of everything it has to offer.

If there are any other places that you visited in Mumbai in one day and would like to recommend them, then let me know below!

Day Trip to Mumbai from Delhi

A Day in Mumbai - Perfect 24 Hours Guide

Widely known as the city of dreams all over India, Mumbai is a must visit when you are touring the country. Being the economical capital of the country, it is a bustling city that never comes to a standstill. It is a favorite weekend getaway amongst many that live in the nearby cities. Packed with many attractions, there is a lot to see in Mumbai. After a tiring day of wandering, Mumbai offers its beaches where you can relax, absorbing the calmness of the sea. If you are visiting the city, then here is an ideal Mumbai itinerary for 1 day which will let you make the most of your limited time.

How to spend 1 day in Mumbai?

Witness heritage in the morning.

Start off your 24 hours in Mumbai by having a vada pav, accompanied by a steaming cup of tea, for breakfast. Then head towards The Gateway of India . This is a seafront arch monument built in basalt and tops the list of attractions in the city. Right opposite to The Gateway of india, you will be able to admire The Taj Mahal Palace Hotel which is considered to be a landmark in Mumbai. After spending considerable time by the Gateway of India, take a ferry from there which leads you to the Elephanta Caves . This is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and features a number of caves with carvings. Take a ferry back to the Gateway of India and then make your way to the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus. Built in 1888, this is a historic railway station and another UNESCO World Heritage Site in Mumbai. The structure of Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus will leave you awestruck.

Enjoy your afternoon by the sea

Make your way towards the famous Marine Drive of Mumbai. This high-end area in the city has many good restaurants where you can have delicious lunch. After lunch, leisurely stroll along the promenade which runs parallel to the Marine Drive. Then hire a cab and head towards the Haji Ali Dargah. This is a mosque situated on an islet away from the coast. A paved walkway leads you to the dargah. Then make your way to the Siddhivinayak  Temple which is a Hindu temple built way back in 1801. With the inner roof of sanctum plated in gold, this temple is called the richest temple in Mumbai.

Devour the mouth-watering spicy dishes in the evening

As the sun starts setting, head towards the Juhu Chowpatty beach. This is one of the most favorite beach amongst locals and tourists alike, and hence is always crowded. While you enjoy watching the sunset, you must taste Bhel-Puri - a spicy mixture of different ingredients. Follow it by gulping down Nariyal paani that is coconut water. Later, at night if time permits you may go shopping at Crawford Market where you will get a variety of products at very cheap prices. There are many hotels in the vicinity where you can have good dinner.

With this itinerary at hand, you will be able to make the most of your 1 day in Mumbai.

One Week in Mumbai: The Perfect Itinerary

mumbai trip plan for 1 day

Welcome to Mumbai

"Maximum City" and "City of Dreams" are two names that have been given to Mumbai in recent years, reflecting the city's extreme contrasts and opportunities it offers. Now India's financial capital and home of the Bollywood movie industry, it's hard to fathom that Mumbai was once a group of seven uninhabitable swampy islands. The indigenous Koli fishing community were the main occupants until the British acquired the land from the Portuguese in 1662, as part of a dowry, and rented it out to the East India Company who developed it.

Bombay really started flourishing in the 1800s, after the swamps had been filled in and the islands joined together. They city's name was changed to Mumbai in 1995, to reflect its Maratha heritage and honor the goddess Mumbadevi, who the Kolis worshiped.

Over the years, many migrants have flocked to Mumbai in search of employment, making it the most culturally diverse and cosmopolitan place in India , and the most over-populated. Not only does the city have one of the largest slums in Asia, one of the country's wealthiest businessmen lives there in a home estimated to cost up to $2 billion. The city's current landscape is made up of a curious mix of age-old infrastructure , Gothic-style British heritage buildings , swanky shopping malls, and skyscrapers.

This comprehensive itinerary for one week in Mumbai covers both popular and lesser-known attractions and will give you deep insight into the city and how it functions.

Ideally, stay somewhere in the Colaba or Fort districts of south Mumbai, which are the main downtown tourist areas. For luxury accommodations , look no further than the Taj Mahal Palace and Tower Hotel . Otherwise, choose from these top cheap hotels and guesthouses or budget hotels .

There's no need to hire a car and driver to get around, as cabs are plentiful and will usually go by the meter, without quoting inflated prices for tourists. If you're using your cell phone in India . Uber is also a convenient and inexpensive option.

Let's go!

 Vatsal Shah / TripSavvy

9 a.m.: Leisurely start the morning with a traditional Indian breakfast at the legendary Olympia Coffee House ( Rahim Mansion, Shahid Bhagat Singh Road, commonly known as Colaba Causeway, opposite Leopold's Cafe, Colaba ). This old-style Irani cafe, established in 1918, is renowned for its keema pav (spicy minced mutton with bread). If you're not so adventurous, order coffee or chai (tea) with egg bhurji (scrambled egg with spices) and bun maksa (buttered bread roll).

9:30 a.m. : Wander over to the Holy Name Cathedral ( 19 Nathalal Parekh Marg, formerly Wodehouse Road, Colaba ) on the road behind Olympia Coffee House. It was completed in 1905, and its Gothic Revival style of architecture is magnificent.

10 a.m.: Spend some time exploring the lanes, buildings, boutiques, and street market around Colaba Causeway . The British started developing the area in the 1800s, and its architecture ranges from ornate Colonial style to more recent Art Deco style (Regal Cinema and Dhanraj Mahal). Avante Cottage Craft ( Shop 12, Wodehouse Road, Indian Mercantile Mansion, Colaba ) is one of the best places to shop of handicrafts in Mumbai . The Clove The Store ( 2 Churchill Chambers, Allana Road, Colaba ) recently opened in Colaba's Art Deco quarter. It stocks fashion and lifestyle products from various Indian designers, plus Ayurvedic wellness brands. Good Earth ( 2 Reay House, BEST Marg, Colaba ) has a reputation for gorgeous home decor and apparel. The Palms Spa ( Dhanraj Mahal, CSM Road, Colaba ) offers fabulous massage treatments, facials and scrubs.

12:30 p.m.: Have lunch at iconic Leopold Cafe on Colaba Causeway. This infamous restaurant opened in 1871 but rose to notoriety in Gregory David Robert's epic book Shantaram , published in 2003. It was also attacked by terrorists in 2008, and the bullet holes remain visible in the walls. You'll be going there for the atmosphere more so than the food .

1:30 p.m.: Walk to the landmark Gateway of India, one of Mumbai's top attractions , five minutes away. From there, take a two-hour boat cruise around Mumbai Harbor . Some options include this one offered by Wandertrails, and this one offered by Thrillophilia .

4:30 p.m.: Head to the grand Taj Mahal Palace and Tower Hotel opposite the Gateway of India, and treat yourself to an elaborate high tea at the Sea Lounge . This luxury hotel was built in 1903 and has a multifaceted history, ranging from accommodating royalty to being held under siege for three long days during the 2008 terrorist attack. Sit by the window and enjoy an expansive view across Mumbai Harbor and the Gateway of India.

5:30 p.m.: Stroll along the Strand Promenade (officially renamed PJ Ramchandani Marg) from the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel to the Radio Club. Enjoy a sun-downer overlooking the harbor at the newly renovated and now upmarket Bayview Cafe ( Hotel Harbor View rooftop, 25 PJ Ramchandani Marg, Colaba ) or  Cafe Marina ( Sea Palace Hotel rooftop, 26 PJ Ramchandani Marg, Colaba ) next door. Both are similarly priced.

8 p.m.: Have dinner at a restaurant in Colaba . For a lively hangout place with a jukebox and beer, choose Cafe Mondegar ( Metro House, near Regal Cinema, Colaba Causeway ). If you'd prefer fine-dining global cuisine, The Table ( Kalapesi Trust Building, opposite Dhanraj Mahal, below Hotel Suba Palace, Colaba ) is recommended. Imbiss Meating Joint ( 3 Pipewala Building, opposite Camy Wafers, 4th Pasta Lane, Colaba ) is a hidden gem that specializes in German cuisine and exotic meat dishes. Otherwise, Delhi Darbar ( 10/14 Holland House, Colaba Causeway ) is popular for north Indian cuisine.

10 p.m.: Don't feel like sleeping? Have a nightcap at The Bar Stock Exchange ( 22 MB Marg, Apollo Hotel, behind Regal Cinema, Colaba ), where the prices of drinks fluctuate according to demand. Or, try the trendy Colaba Social ( 24 Glen Rose Building, BK Boman Behram Marg, behind Taj Mahal Hotel, Colaba ),

Vatsal Shah / TripSavvy

8 a.m.: Begin the day by going on Khaki Tours' Fort Ride Urban Safari to explore Mumbai's heritage precinct. This unique 15-kilometer, 2.5-hour trip in an open-top jeep commences at the Town Hall and covers more than 100 heritage buildings.

11:30 a.m.: Be at Churchgate Railway Station to see the famous dabba-walas in action. They exit the station between 11.30 a.m. and noon, carrying large trays of tiffins with food that will be delivered to Mumbai's office workers.

Noon: Take a cab to the Kala Ghoda Art Precinct about 10 minutes away, and have lunch at one of the many restaurants there. Trishna ( 7 Saibaba Road, Kala Ghoda ) serves some of the best south Indian coastal cuisine in Mumbai. Khyber ( 145, M.G. Road, Kala Ghoda ) has won awards for its Northwest Frontier dishes and has regal Afghan-inspired interiors. If you're feeling really hungry, try the traditional vegetarian thali (platter) at Chetana ( 34 K Dubash Marg, Kala Ghoda ). Alternatively, cool Kala Ghoda Cafe ( Bharthania Building A Block, 10 Ropewalk Lane, opposite Trishna restaurant, Kala Ghoda ) is ideal for a light bite and coffee or specialty teas. For healthy gourmet food dine at The Pantry ( Yeshwant Chambers, Military Square Lane, near Trishna restaurant, Kala Ghoda ) or The Nutcracker ( Modern House, Dr. V.B. Gandhi Marg, opposite One Forbes Building, Kala Ghoda ).

1:30 p.m.: Spend the afternoon exploring Kala Ghoda. If you're interested in art, don't miss the Jehangir Art Gallery , Museum Gallery, and National Gallery of Modern Art (tickets are 500 rupees for foreigners and 20 rupees for Indians. Open until 6 p.m. except Mondays). Tea lovers must visit the Sancha Tea Boutique ( Store 2A, 11A Machinery House, opposite Trishna restaurant, Kala Ghoda ). Kulture Shop ( 9 Examiner Press, 115 Nagindas Master Road, Kala Ghoda ) sells funky products by leading Indian graphic artists. The handwoven Indian clothing and textiles at Fab India ( 137 Jeroo Building, M.G. Road, Kala Ghoda ) are popular. You can also easily fill in a few hours at the extensive Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya , formerly the Prince of Wales Museum (tickets are 500 rupees for foreigners and 85 rupees for Indians. Open until 6 p.m. except Mondays). It has incredible Indo-Saracenic architecture.

7:30 p.m.: For dinner, have an authentic regional Indian meal in the home of a local. It's a fantastic way of experiencing Mumbai's eclectic culture. In the Colaba area, choose from Bihari cuisine cooked by Chandana or Bohri cuisine cooked by Nafisa.

TripSavvy / Shraddha Gosavi

8 a.m.: Visit Mumbai's dhobi ghat ( next to Mahalaxmi railway station, Doctor E Moses Rd, Mahalaxmi , central south Mumbai ) to see the morning washing activity. This massive open-air laundry was founded in 1890 and is the largest in the world. It's even earned a mention in the Guinness Book of Records! Tourists can go inside and take photos by paying a small fee to one of the local guides at the entrance.

9 a.m.: Walk 30 minutes or take a cab to Haji Ali Dargah ( Dargah Road, Haji Ali, central south Mumbai ), situated in the ocean off the coast of Mumbai. This 15th century mosque and tomb contains the body of wealthy Muslim merchant and Sufi saint Pir Haji Ali Shah Bukhari, who built it after a trip to Mecca inspired him to change his life. If the tide is low, you can follow the path out to it.

10 a.m.: Grab a fresh juice from Haji Ali Juice Center and take a cab to Banganga Tank ( Walkeshwar Road, Teen Batti, Malabar Hill , south Mumbai ), via Pedder Road. Look out for Antilia , the towering uber-luxury residence of Indian businessman Mukesh Ambani, chairman of Reliance Industries. It has more than 20 floors, and is thought to have cost $1-2 billion to construct.

10:30 a.m.: Explore Banganga Tank, the oldest continually inhabited place in Mumbai, which is now surrounded by modern high-rise apartment buildings. It's a good idea to go on a guided walk of the area to learn about it. Or, if you'd like to spend more than two hours there, Khaki Tours' Banganga Parikrama walk is excellent and in-depth.

12:30 p.m.: Stop by the Babu Amichand Panalal Adishwarji Jain temple ( Ridge Road, Walkeshwar, Malabar Hill, south Mumbai ) and marvel over its ornate sculptures and paintings. The temple, constructed in 1904, also has two colorful stone elephants flanking its entrance.

1 p.m.: Have a tasty and inexpensive vegetarian south Indian lunch at Dakshinayan ( Walkeshwar Road, near Ridge Road intersection, Walkeshwar, Malabar Hill, south Mumbai ), only a few minutes away on foot.

2 p.m.:  Retrace the life of Mahatma Gandhi, and his role in fighting for India's freedom from British rule, at Mani Bhavan ( 19 Laburnum Rd, Gamdevi, south Mumbai ) where he stayed while in Bombay from 1917 to 1934. This small museum contains various exhibits of photos, letters, and documents.

3 p.m. : Step back in time at historic Khotachiwadi village ( near Charni Road station in Girgaum , south Mumbai ). This characterful village dates back to the 1800s and has wooden Portuguese-style bungalows that are more than 100 years old. Unfortunately, only about 25 of them remain. The most notable ones are 47G (where distinguished Indian fashion designer and heritage activist James Ferreira lives), and 57 (where guitarist Wilfred "Willy Black" Felizardo lives). James recently opened a bed and breakfast in part of his home, and is always willing to chat to people about Khotachiwadi if he's free.

5 p.m.: Catch the sunset at Girgaum Chowpatty on Marine Drive, and sample some classic Mumbai snacks from the food stalls on the beach. This city beach is a popular evening hangout spot for Mumbai's residents .

7 p.m.: Head to the newly restored Royal Opera House ( Mama Padmanand Marg, Girgaum, south Mumbai ) for a live music performance.

Vatsal Shah / TripSavvy

5 a.m.: It's totally worth getting out of bed early to go on No Footprints' Mumbai by Dawn tour . You'll get to see a completely different, non-touristy side of the city at its old-fashioned wholesale markets, which burst with activity by sunrise. This includes the city's largest fish market at Sassoon Dock in Colaba, newspaper market, and flower market.

8:30 a.m.: Have a hearty gourmet western breakfast at the Bake House Cafe ( 43 Ropewalk Lane, Kala Ghoda, Fort . Behind Rhythm House and opposite the Synagogue ), a classy new all-day diner with an elegant Victorian-era vibe.

9:30 a.m.: Continue your exploration of Mumbai's markets at Crawford Market and Mangaldas Market ( Near CST Railway Station, Lokmanya Tilak Marg, Dhobi Talao, Fort area, south Mumbai ). Crawford Market is housed in an historic Colonial building, and specializes in wholesale fruit and vegetables including spices. Nearby, Mangaldas Market is one of the biggest fabric markets in Asia.

11:30 a.m.: Walk five minutes further north along Sheikh Memon Street to Mumba Devi temple , dedicated to the goddess who Mumbai was named after. It was founded by the city's original inhabitants, the Koli fishermen, who worshiped her. The current temple replaces the initial one, which was demolished in 1737.

12:30 p.m.: Have lunch at Faham Restaurant and Lounge ( Khadak Street, near Zakaria Masjid, Mohammad Ali Road area, south Mumbai ), about a 10-minute walk away. The Mohammad Ali Road area is a renowned non-vegetarian foodie destination in Mumbai, and this atmospheric restaurant serves excellent north Indian and Chinese cuisine.

2 p.m.: Visit Bombay Panjrapole ( Panjrapole Compound, Panjarapole Road, Bhuleshwar, south Mumbai ), a surprising two-acre cow shelter tucked away in the heart of Mumbai's busy Bhuleshwar market district.

3 p.m.: Head to Chor Bazaar ( Mutton Street, between S V Patel and Moulana Shaukat Ali Roads, near Mohammad Ali Road, south Mumbai ), Mumbai's famous thieves market. These days, its shops are overflowing with everything from antiques to junk. It's possible to go on a two-hour guided walking tour of Chor Bazaar.

6:30 p.m.: Catch an evening show at the National Center for Performing Arts ( NCPA Marg, Nariman Point, south Mumbai ). Various Indian classical music, dance and drama productions are held there. Check the website for details of what's on. If you're feeling hungry beforehand, Suzette ( Atlanta Building, Nariman Point, south Mumbai ), is a tiny French-style cafe that makes delicious waffles, crepes, pastries, and pancakes. It has extensive menu of coffees, teas, juices and smoothies too.

9 p.m.: For dinner, either eat at one of the two restaurants at the National Center for Performing Arts , or at the The Sassy Spoon ( Express Towers, Ramnath Goenka Marg, Nariman Point, south Mumbai ). It has funky designer interiors and varied cuisine ranging from modern Indian to Mediterranean.

9 a.m.: Explore Mumbai's incredible Dharavi slum, one of the largest slums in Asia, on a guided walking tour. This is not voyeuristic poverty tourism but rather shows what the residents are able to achieve despite their challenging conditions. You'll get amazing insight into this inspiring community! A popular Dharavi tour is offered by Reality Tours and Travels (900 rupees per person). It departs from Churchgate railway station daily at 9.15 a.m. Part of the proceeds are used to support Dharavi residents. Choose the option to have a home-cooked lunch with a local family afterwards. In addition, make sure you bring extra money for shopping, as you can buy everything from leather goods to fabric at low prices, made by Dharavi businesses.

2:30 p.m.: Take a cab to Worli fishing village (also known as Worli koliwada ), about 30 minutes away. Worli was one of the original seven islands of Bombay, inhabited by the indigenous Koli fishermen. The village has a 17th century fort built by the British, and a haphazard labyrinth of modest homes. British band Coldplay filmed their music video for their single, "Hymn For the Weekend", there. A Mumbai artist has transformed the exteriors of the buildings in the village by painting them bright colors. The village isn't a tourist area, so you may wish to go on a walking tour .

4:30 p.m.: Pay your respects to India's favorite elephant-headed god, Lord Ganesh, at Siddhivinyak Temple ( Corner of Kakasaheb Gadgil Marg and S.K. Bole Marg, Prabhadevi, central south Mumbai ). The temple was built in 1801, and is one of the richest and grandest in Mumbai. Its inner sanctum has a gold-plated ceiling!

5:30 p.m.: Refresh and recharge at cozy Cafe Trofima ( Road 2, Raja Bade Chowk, opposite Raja Rani Travels, Shivaji Park, Dadar West, central south Mumbai ).

6 p.m.: Walk across to Shree Samartha Vyayam Mandir in Shivaji Park ( Keluskar Road , Dadar West, central south Mumbai ), the home of mallakhamb . This indigenous form of gymnastics uses the support of only a rope or pole, and you can see students practice intensely there. If you want to try it, Wandertrails offers a  two-hour mallakhamb workshop.

8 p.m.: Dine on authentic Maharashtrian cuisine for dinner at Diva Maharashtracha ( Lalita Giridhar Tower, Takandas Kataria Marg, Kataria Colony, Shivaji Park, Dadar West , central south Mumbai ). It has regal Peshwa-style interiors and live music.

8:30 a.m.: A trip to Mumbai would be incomplete without a brush with Bollywood. Go on this half-day Mumbai Dream Tour conducted by No Footprints to get a Bollywood dance lesson, and visit a film studio and sound recording studio. Customized Bollywood film posters can be created upon request.

3 p.m.:  Spend a couple of hours at the nostalgic Dr. Bhau Daji Lad Museum ( 91 A Rani Baug, Veer Mata Jijbai Bhonsle Udyan, Dr Baba Saheb Ambedkar Marg, Byculla East, south Mumbai. Tickets: 100 rupees for foreigners and 10 rupees for Indians ) and have afternoon tea at the Museum Cafe. The museum opened in 1857 and is the oldest one in Mumbai. It has been beautifully restored and showcases the cultural heritage of the city.

5 p.m.: Kick back with a cocktail or champagne, and admire the sun set over the city skyline from the 34th floor of chic Aer bar ( Four Seasons Hotel, Dr. E. Moses Road, Worli ). It's one of the highest bars in Mumbai, and drinks are half price during happy hours until 8 p.m.

7 p.m.: Have dinner at the The Bombay Canteen or Farzi Cafe , at the Kamala Mills Compound in Lower Parel. Both restaurants are highly regarded for their inventive contemporary Indian cuisine. They're located in Mumbai's hottest new dining destination, developed from a disused industrial area once occupied by the city's cotton mills. Do reserve a table well in advance!

9 p.m.: It's Saturday night, so party on at a bar in the Kamala Mills Compound such as London Taxi, Lord of the Drinks, La Lola, Plum by Bent Chair, or 145 The Mill.

Make the most of the reduced traffic on Sunday by heading north, to suburban Bandra West and Juhu Beach. Often referred to as the "Queen of the Suburbs", Bandra was originally a Portuguese settlement that remained after the British gained possession of the Bombay islands in 1662. This accounts for the suburb's substantial Catholic population and many old churches. Nowadays, multi-faceted Bandra is also home to the city's hipsters and celebrities, who are attracted by its Western influences and liberal attitudes.

If you're feeling adventurous, you can take the Mumbai local train , and use a map to get to Bandra. Board it at Churchgate on the Western Line.

9 a.m.: Drop into The Bagel Shop ( 30 Pali Mala Road, behind Carter Road, Pali Hill, Bandra West ) for breakfast. Don't let the name fool you, this beloved cafe in a rambling bungalow serves a lot more than bagels and is more like a creative community than a shop. Writers, filmmakers, DJs, entrepreneurs and expats all hang out there.

10 a.m.: At the heritage enclave of Ranwar Village, admire the Portuguese ancestral homes and surrounding street art. Start from Nagrana Lane ( off Hill Road, Bandra West) and wander along it to Waroda Road. Turn left at the Birdsong Organic Cafe. Most of the street art can be found on and around Waroda Road, Chapel Road, and Saint Veronica Road up to Mount Carmel Church. The most prominent murals on Chapel Road are the work of the Bollywood Art Project. Wandertrails conducts guided two-hour walking tours of the street art.

Noon: Head to Bandra Bandstand (don't miss the murals of Bollywood actors Amitabh Bachchan and Rajesh Khanna on the corner of Bandstand and Pereira Road). Pose for a photo outside the gates of Mannat , where the "King of Bollywood" Shah Rukh Khan lives.

12:30 p.m.: Sunday Brunch is a big thing in Mumbai and Mediterranean-style Olive Bar and Kitchen ( 14 Union Park, Khar West, behind Cafe Coffee Day ) offers one of the best spreads, accompanied by cocktails and wine. Go there via the Carter Road promenade.

2:30 p.m.: Browse the roadside stalls for bargains on Linking Road in Bandra West. Bags, shoes, jewelry and clothing are all up for grabs at cheap prices.

4:30 p.m.: Be astonished by the colossal crowd at Juhu beach ( Juhu Tara Road, Juhu ), about 15 minutes north of Bandra. It's carnival-like, with everything from monkeys to sand sculptures.

5 p.m.: Unwind under the palm trees overlooking Juhu Beach at  Gadda Da Vida seaside lounge ( Novotel Hotel, Balraj Sahani Marg, Juhu Beach ). There are daily happy hours from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m.

7:30 p.m. : Eat dinner at a restaurant in Juhu. Popular options include Mahesh Lunch Home ( next to J.W.Marriott Hotel, Juhu Tara Road, Juhu ) for mouthwatering Mangalorean seafood, quaint Grandmama's Cafe ( Hotel Royal Garden, Juhu Tara Road, Juhu ) for platters of wholesome Indian and Continental food ideal for sharing.

Mumbai darshan in a day

Mumbai meri jaan

Photo of Mumbai darshan in a day by KASHISH BHATIA

I have been to Mumbai two times before but it always feels refreshing when I visit this city. The city is magical - busy roads, people hovering around the streets, catching locals, smiling, helping... The city restores me back to life. Always.

The city has lot of places to visit. Frankly, one day is not enough to cover the city. I recently went for Mumbai darshan and thought of covering some new places. You can refer to the following Mumbai darshan places list to make your Mumbai darshan itinerary as well.

Bandra Railway Station

I reached Bandra station, Mumbai at 7:30 in the morning, hired a cab and straight away went to my hotel.

Take one step at a time

After getting refreshed, I started my journey for a day. First place in my Mumbai darshan checklist was Siddhivinayak Ganesha Temple. But before that I wanted to have something as I was famished and was craving to have some local Maharashtra cuisine. I picked a restaurant near Sidhivinayak mandir called Aaswaad. I ordered my favorite Misal Pav and Thalipeeth. Both the dishes were delicious. Specially Thalipeeth. Do try this restaurant for breakfast. Total cost - Rs 150.

Aaswaad. Place not to be missed.

Shivaji, the great !

After having breakfast I started walking towards the temple. It was 10 mins(1Km) walk from the restaurant.

Siddhi Vinayak Mandir Back Entrance

I reached the temple and stand in the queue. As it was Sunday, many people were on a Mumbai darshan tour so the queue was long but in 30 mins , I reached inside the temple.

Bandra - Worli Sea Link

Next place on my Mumbai darshan itinerary was Bandra-Worli Sea link. As there was no direct local to reach Worli, I preferred to take a taxi to take me through the sealink. Including toll, the taxi driver took Rs.250 . The drive through the sea link was fun. I recorded the entire Mumbai darshan journey through the sealink and also took photos.

Bandra-Worli Sea link

The driver dropped me near Band stand. I started walking towards Mannat -Mr. Sharukh Khan premises. Unfortunately he was not there at home. I took some photos there and moved ahead for my next destination.

Bandstand Fort

The next place in my checklist was Band Stand Fort. The palce was very scenic. Sit on giant rocks beside the sea and gaze beautiful Bandra-Worli sea link. I bought bhel puri and sat there to enjoy the view.

After this, I took a bus from nearby bus stop and headed towards Bandra Railway station to catch local for CST.

Bus ticket price from Band Stand fort till Bandra Railway station Rs. 35 and from Railway station till CST is Rs. 5 .

Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus

By the time I reached CST, it was almost 4pm. I was hungry. Thanks to zomato that I found a good restaurant opposite to CST called Aram Vada Pav. The restuarant also has a sitting area. Some person was having Sabudana khichdi and after seeing it I felt so tempted that I ordered it immediately. One sabudanaisn't enough for me so I ordered 2 vada pav and tea also :D

Total Cost for snacks - Rs 110

I crossed the road and went back to the station to take bus for my next destination on my Mumbai darshan tour - Gateway of India.

But I observed that there are shared Taxis can be taken outside the station. The cab took Rs 20 per person for Gateway of India. He dropped me near Taj Hotel.

To avoid wasting time I took a ferry ticket near Gateway of India and stood in the queue for the ride. Ticket price - Rs.90

This was the best part of my entire 1 day venture of the Mumbai darshan spots.

While I was waiting in the queue, it started drizzling. Ferry came for boarding and I rushed to catch front seat. The total ride generally takes 1 hour.

Gateway of India

After a while it started raining like cats and dogs and it added more adventure to the ferry fun. Thrilling experience it was. Don't miss the ferry ride if you visit Mumbai .

After I returned back from the ride, I sat near Gateway of India to dry my clothes. I was completely drenched :).

Colaba Causeway

Now it was time to do shopping in local markets as part of the Mumbai darshan. I headed to Colaba Causeway market which is 10 mins walking distance from Gateway of India. The marker is very lively. You can find clothes, jewelry - dirt cheap with great quality.

Just like that :P

This place also offers some of the best places to eat in the city. Hence it is advisable to reserve table if you are planning to have dinner nearby.

I had dinner at Delhi Darbar restaurant in opposite lane of the market. The food wasn't so great but I had no option as all restaurants were packed.

It was 10 p.m and the rain had stopped. I took a shared taxi and headed back to CST.

I was mesmerized by seeing beautiful lights decoration on CST and MahaNagar palika .

After spending some time with lights, I boarded a local to Kurla and headed back to my hotel as I had my train to Pune early morning.

At the end of the day, I was immensely happy that the day went as I planned. While going back to hotel I started searching for places to visit in Pune the next day :).

If you want to explore the city, you can also embark on your own Mumbai darshan journey or book some Mumbai darshan packages. Whether you are coming for Mumbai darshan from Pune or Delhi, travellers from every part of the country will enjoy visiting the various Mumbai darshan places.

Cheers to traveling !

Priyadarshini Park and Sports Complex is a clean and well-maintained sea-facing attraction in South Mumbai. Located in one of the sophisticated localities, this Napeansea Road park overlooks many expensive apartments on the street. Every nook and corner of this 20 acres land has now become a powerhouse to keep the heart of Mumbai pumping. For more than 3 decades, this wonderland has served as a recreational site, and sports and fitness complex. Visit here early in the morning to witness the magic of this refuge for the inhabitants of Mumbai.  Also, Mumbaikars do not forget to visit here in the early monsoons to sit on its sea-facing end and seek a delight with the sound of soothing waves. Once, this piece of land was merely a rocky patch of the coastal area of Malabar. What you see today is a gorgeous lush green garden lined up with a total of 600+ coconut trees. With a perfect and well-maintained ambiance, this park is a boon for early morning yoga, jogging, walking, aerobics, and so on. The credit, of course, goes to its active group – the Malabar Hill Citizen Forum, who looks after it as its own child. You can connect with their authorities to be an annual member of the plethora of recreational sports activities that they organize. In addition to pumping the adrenaline of youth with its recreational touch, Priyadarshini Park of Mumbai also serves as an ideal family outing location and a lover’s point. If you are fortunate enough, you may even witness little squirrels accompanying you here for some pleasing views.

Babulnath

Whenever you are visiting Mumbai, Babulnath Shiva temple is a must-visit for inner peace and tranquillity. It is one of the oldest temples in Mumbai, which increases its importance in the eyes of the loyal devotees. Its walls are specially carved with limestone that depicts the Hindu mythology, which travellers find it exciting at the first look. At this temple, the beautiful marble flooring is specially brought down from Rajasthan. Thus, each step you take inside this temple feels royal and enchanting along with the daily devotees you can meet and greet, dressed in Indian attires. So, every moment spent in this temple is blissful with internal peace and devotion. Moreover, you can witness devotees from different corners of the world who love to pay their tribute to Lord Shiva and other idols.Once you enter the holy temple revered by so many Hindus and locals, you can find sculptures and idols of Lord Ganesha, Lord Hanuman, and Nandi with Kashyap. We would also advise you to buy a basket outside the temple steps before entering. This basket will bring joy, happiness and fulfil all your wishes once you pay your heartfelt worship to Shiva and other lords like Durga Mata and Goddess Parvati at the centre of this temple.  If you have any doubts regarding the same, you can always ask devotees around you or the priest to know how to get the prayer done with the basket that you buy.On the other hand, idols of Goddess Parvati and Durga Mata are respectfully placed in the centre of this temple. What’s even more special about this temple is that around 4 times a day, prayers for Lord Shiva are recited here. This temple gets approximately a lakh devotees for Darshan during the Mahashivratri. The whole scenario is a sight to behold and capture in your hearts to narrate stories about back home.
