Björk will make her long-awaited return to Australia in 2023

Incomparable indie music innovator Björk will exhibit her spellbinding show Cornucopia at the Perth Festival in 2023.

This Australian exclusive concert experience will take place in a purpose built pavilion, and promises "a visually spectacular landscape of lush colours, futuristic screens and wild images of nature".

The show, based on her 2017 album Utopia , features Björk performing with choirs of flutes and voices, and promises to be an immersive multimedia experience unlike any you've witnessed so far.

Björk most recently visited us in 2016 for DJ sets as part of Vivid LIVE, however these will be Björk's first musical performances in Australia since her incredible shows as part of the Big Day Out in 2008.

This theatrical production has been broadly acclaimed by critics around the world, with some calling it "the wildest visual display in a concert that I’ve ever seen" and others proclaiming Björk's vision and execution to be "bolder than ever".

It's a coup for the Perth Festival to secure such an illustrious performance and ought to have music fans around the country considering a trip to the Western Australian capital to see this dazzling show for themselves.

Last month, Björk released her tenth studio album Fossora , a typically stunning and unique work that cements her as one of music's most innovative and singular artists.

The proclaimed "sci-fi pop concert" coming to Perth will feature songs from  Fossora , as well as music from across the icon's acclaimed 30 year solo career.

Speaking with Double J's Zan Rowe, the artist said she ends up serving her audience best when creating work for herself.

"You learn very quickly that the best shows are when you are so generous that you are selfish," she said. "Or you are so selfish, that you are generous. Where these two meet at the same point.

"When you are stuck in the middle, you don't get that universal moment. If you're trying to please 10 of your friends or your partner or some niche 10,000 people out there somewhere, or music critics, or whatever, you stop the flow somehow.

"But if you are working on yourself, kind of like when you do yoga or walking, you're sort of doing it for your own wellbeing. Those moments are the ones where you actually can be the most generous, it's that sort of contradiction, which is magical."

Catch Björk playing the following shows. Tickets are on sale from 12pm AWST on Thursday 3 November.

The full Perth Festival program will be revealed on Thursday 27 October. In the meantime, grab more information about the Björk show here .

Best known as the drummer and founder of the influential stoner rock band Kyuss, Brant’s musical journey has seen him leave an indelible mark on the landscape of rock music. From his days with Kyuss to his ventures with Fu Manchu, Mondo Generator, and Vista Chino, Brant’s rebellious sensibility and unwavering commitment to artistic freedom have set him apart as a true icon of the genre.

Björk Announces 2023 Cornucopia Shows

Björk

Björk has announced a handful of tour dates for later this year, bringing her Cornucopia performance to stages in Australia, Japan, and Europe. See the full itinerary below.

In a statement about Cornucopia, which she’s presented in New York, Reykjavik, San Francisco, and Los Angeles in recent years, Björk acknowledged the connection between Cornucopia, 2017’s Utopia , and October’s Fossora :

cornucopia was always intended to be a world for both utopia and the album after that .… which is now out there called fossora . so i am truly excited to premier those 2 worlds colliding , this autumn in southern Europe ,.

The upcoming Cornucopia performances will include the flute septet Viibra and an expanded instrumental ensemble, plus a reverb chamber. Since releasing Fossora last year, Björk has shared a new video for “ Sorrowful Soil ” and picked up a Grammy nomination for Best Alternative Music Album . Earlier this month, she shared a remix of Fossora ’s “ Ovule ” by Sega Bodega and Shygirl.

Brant Bjork Trio Announce Australian Tour

brant bjork trio

Anybody notice  Brant Bjork hitting the road pretty hard these last couple years? Since I guess later 2021/2022, if it hasn’t been solo, it’s been the trio  Stöner , and of late he’s been keeping company with that band’s drummer  Ryan Güt and longtime collaborator and bassist Mario Lalli , also of  Fatso Jetson ,  Yawning Man , more recently the jammy  The Rubber Snake Charmers , and like Bjork ( Kyuss , Fu Manchu , etc.), is a founding principal of Californian desert rock. I was fortunate enough to see this band, the Brant Bjork Trio , at Desertfest New York ( review here ), and their chemistry, presence, groove all live up to reputation. Playing tunes from  Bjork ‘s solo catalog and even apparently composing new material perhaps with an eye toward an LP, they’ve obviously been hither and yon in the US already, and in 2024 they’ll look to expand on that in busy fashion.

After  Planet Desert Rock Weekend in January — which I want to go to; anyone got a flight and hotel room I could borrow? — the three-piece head to South America in March for a run of shows in Chile, Brazil, Argentina and Uruguay. That’s not an insignificant amount of travel. Later the same month, they’ll one-up themselves by undertaking the journey to Australia for shows there with support from  Full Tone Generator , with whom  Bjork has both played and produced previously. That stint ends early in April, and is the newest announcement, hence the headline above. Still to come, however, are the full dates for the European tour that will go at least three full weeks as it’s already confirmed to take  Brant Bjork Trio from  Desertfest Oslo (May 10-11) through  Desertfest London (May 17-19) to  Desertfest Berlin (May 24-26).

I seriously doubt that will be the end of their year, either, especially if they might be eyeing a Fall LP release with so much touring before. Or maybe they’ll hit the studio this Winter and put out a record in Spring. Or maybe a fucking asteroid will smash into the planet and none of these shows will happen, for all I know, but the point here is that despite having absolutely nothing, zero, nulla, to prove to anyone, they’re out doing so anyway. If you be there to see them on stage — they seem to be making it easier by going everywhere — I can only recommend doing so as something you will not regret.

Dates follow, as per social media:

Arts & entertainment, design & style, travel & leisure, search concrete playground, bjork is bringing her dazzling 'cornucopia' shows to australia in 2023 — but only to perth.

The iconic Icelandic star will play three gigs Down Under in March, all at Perth Festival.

Bjork Is Bringing Her Dazzling 'Cornucopia' Shows to Australia in 2023 — But Only to Perth

Since 2008, it's been oh so quiet in Australia. Since the Big Day Out that year, Icelandic icon Björk hasn't toured the country to perform full shows, only coming to Sydney to do DJ sets at Vivid in 2016. But that'll change in 2023, all thanks to the singer's Cornucopia tour; however, if you're keen to check it out — which you should be — then you'll need to make sure you're in Perth.

Perth residents, congrats — you're in for a treat, as every Björk show always is. Everyone else, heading to Western Australia should be on your must-do list on March 3, 6, 9 or 12, the dates that the star will take to the stage at Langley Park during 2023's Perth Festival .

bjork tour dates australia

Warren Du Preez and Nick Thornton-Jones

These will be Björk's only Aussie gigs, and take place in a purpose-built, 100 metre by 55 metre pavilion at the venue — which is being badged "a cybersonic Garden of Eden where nature and technology come together in perfect harmony" — that can host almost 5000 people per evening. Expect colours, futuristic screens, a whole lot of nature imagery, stunning costumes, Björk's tunes (obviously) and a multi-sensory experience all round.

The musician's 2017 album Utopia is the focus of the Cornucopia tour and the production that goes with it, which debuted back in 2019 in Manhattan. Still, Björk has been playing a few songs from the rest of her career as part of the setlist, including 1993's 'Venus As a Boy', 1995's 'Isobel', and 2001's 'Hidden Place' and 'Pagan Poetry'.

Fans of tunes like 'Army of Me', 'Hyperballad', 'It's Oh So Quiet', 'Violently Happy' and 'Big Time Sensuality' mightn't hear their favourite track, sorry — but the dazzling spectacle of the Cornucopia gigs, which is co-directed by acclaimed Argentinian filmmaker Lucrecia Martel ( Zama ) promises to be a sight to behold.

The tour comes to Perth after previous other stops in Mexico City, Brussels, Luxembourg, London, Glasgow, Dublin, Oslo, Copenhagen, Stockholm, Los Angeles and San Francisco — and before two Tokyo gigs.

Tickets go on sale from 12pm AWST on Thursday, October 27 (for pre-sales) and 12pm AWST on Thursday, November 2 (for general sales).

As for the rest of the Perth Festival lineup — if you're looking for other things to do around Björk's shows, whether you're a local or plan to be a visitor — it's announced on Thursday, October 27.

Bjork will play Perth Festival 2023, at Langley Park, 103 Birdiya Drive, Perth, on March 3, 6, 9 and 12, 2023. Ticket pre-sales start at 12pm AWST on Thursday, October 27, with general sales from 12pm AWST on Thursday, November 2. Through her eclectic avant-garde pop infused with electronica, Björk (born November 21st, 1965) has become an international icon with her intelligent, forward-thinking music that frequently defies expectation.

Following the demise of her band, the Sugarcubes, in 1992, Björk embarked upon a solo career that would lead her to widespread critical acclaim and chart success. Yet this was not her first solo album. Björk had already released a hit record at the young age of 11, a collection of covers that found great success in her native country. The child prodigy later became lead vocalist for the Sugarcubes, whose art rock found a hit album in the US and UK after the release of "Life's Too Good" in 1988. After their break-up, Björk traveled to London, where she became interested in the burgeoning dance scene, which would inform much of her solo musical direction from there on.

In 1992, "Debut" was released, Björk's first solo venture since she was 11 years old. The album took influence from trip hop and electronica, with the likes of Tricky, Underworld and Nellee Hooper lending their production talents. The resulting album became hugely successful, peaking at number three in the UK charts, featuring a number of hit singles that found chart success globally. Björk became a runaway success, earning countless awards and accolades at the year's end.

Björk's following releases continued to find critical acclaim, most notably in the UK, spawning several remix albums of her work subsequently. In 2000, Björk was also named 'Best Actress' at the Cannes Film Festival for her performance in Lars Von Trier's "Dancer in the Dark." Alongside her solo efforts, Björk also created several film soundtracks, helping to diversify her work. In 2004, she released the ambitious "Medúla," an album made up entirely of vocal samples before then returning to the more beat-driven, upbeat record, "Volta" in 2007.

Björk continued to be ambitious in her scope for musical exploration, creating the concept album "Biophillia," which explored humanity's interaction with the natural world, most notably its geological landscape, and how music reflects this. The album also spawned an IMAX film, as well as a BBC 4 documentary, "When Björk met David Attenborough," further exploring this subject matter.

Forever busy, Björk appeared on a Death Grips release, on the album, "Niggas on the Moon." A live DVD of her "Biophillia" project followed shortly after in 2014, which captured Björk's ability to put on an impressive live show. In 2015, her ninth studio album was unexpectedly released after it was leaked prior on the internet, yet Björk still found critical acclaim for her highly anticipated "Vulnicura."

Live reviews

It could be argued that Björk's 2011 release 'Crystalline' was her most creative and daring collection since her career began way back in 1992. The Icelandic mega-star has always been known to push boundaries of visual media and its relation with music and this innovation remains present during her live performance.

From the percussive intro to 'Cosmogony' the sense of anticipation in the room is strong as the audience watch Björk's impressive choir ominously chant the introduction. The classic tracks such as 'Hunter' and 'Hidden Place' gain huge cheers and the performance of these influential pieces of alternative pop prove why Björk is such an iconic musician.

With such a large discography, she continuously keeps her set lists fresh and interesting by playing a variety of fan favourites as opposed to reverting straight back to the likes of 'Crying' or 'Army Of Me'. 'The Pleasure Is All Mine' sounded wonderful with a supporting choir, and 'Mouth's Cradle' was as haunting as ever.

Perhaps the oldest track performed of the evening 'Hyperballad' attains the most poignant moment as her pained vocal annunciates every lyric on this tender and beautiful ballad. The controversial 'Declare Independence' acts as the encore and the way in which Björk delivers this epic piece of power pop leaves audiences chattering about the Scandinavian star all the way into the night.

Being in the audience for a Björk performance is the modern equivalent of being one of those slack jawed scientists at the end of “Close Encounters” who stand there in amazement when the higher beings descend from above to teach us a new musical language.

Your mind melts and your synapses stretch under a slew of signals and images until you’re simply transported somewhere else.

She’s a genius.

This was the first dress rehearsal for her forthcoming world tour for her new album, Utopia and it was staged in a local cinema near to her home in Reykjavik.

We had been politely asked by Björk to refrain from taking any pictures before, during or after the show, but I can describe the set as a multi-layered combination of platforms and stages, some of which rotated while Björk or her amazing supporting artists moved from one level to another.

Those support artists are seven female flautists, who call to mind Shakespearean woodland nymphs and sprites as they jauntily run from one stage to another.

The set was dressed as a river garden, with fronds and delicate arrays of plants.

The set was around 90 minutes long, with a one song encore and no interval.

As a gig experience, it was incredibly emotional and affecting and I still find myself somewhat stunned by it now, the next day.

If you can get tickets, get them. This is not to be missed.

Björk's creativity and ability to captivate her audience is indescribable. She exudes such raw talent and a talent for entertaining her audience. She is so different and uniquely Björk that there can be no one just like her.

Her performance at each of her shows is something else. It seems as though she loves to perform and loves to bare herself to the audience.

Her voice is lovely and has a quality about it that is all her own. live is a sight to behold and her style can seem strange to some unfamiliar with her but her fans know that she just expresses herself differently. It really is something completely worthwhile to see her live and in person. The audience really appreciates her and her adorably unique voice.

She sounds dainty and tiny at first but throughout her show she gets progressively louder and more resonating and you can feel how powerful her voice can be. Everyone in the audience will be silent, you don't dare make a sound as she unfolds before your eyes and ears.

Björk is an unforgettable experience and her music, show and audience come together with such perfect clarity. She is delicate and strong and everything you would want as a performer.

Let me start off by saying that I don't like all of Björk's music but there are a few specific songs that I fell in love with and listened to nonstop at one point, and she got me through a pretty tough time in my life. So I was kind of scared that Her new album would not really be my thing, and after listening to several of its songs, I was convinced it wasn't. I bought the tickets mostly for the visuals.

My low expectations completely dissolved about 10 seconds into the concert. Björk's incredible voice in combination with her visual performance was literal magic. It was a feast for the senses - all the senses. In terms of music/movies/art I have about the emotional capacity of a brick wall, but I teared up more than once. I had to keep myself in check constantly, asking "Oh my god. Is this really happening to me right now?"

It was the fastest-moving two hours of my life. Seeing Björk live at Carnegie Hall was one of the most amazing experiences of my life. I've tried to sum it up in this review but to be honest, I feel like no words could ever come close to capturing what I saw, heard, felt, and went through.

Excellent support from Lotic and Arca set the tone for a march harder, 'festival-style', beats-and-bass-oriented gig than I expected, but was utterly excited by. Did not expect to dance *so much* but it was impossible not to. Cracking setlist going as far back as Army of Me and Hunter, but still weaving in new faves like Mutual Core and of course the main body of Vulnicura. As predicted, Mouth Mantra translated pretty extraordinarily to a live set, and the pyrotechnics didn't hurt. Hyperballad was the perfect encore too. Bjork herself was on undeniably good form, but then that was never in doubt - her vocals on point, and her fun command of the stage made her feel accessible and the moments intimate despite the content being so constantly explosive and grand. Couldn't have asked for more.

A stripped down Björk with no band or choir this time, but with orchestra instead. Just her, the orchestra and the music. The first part of the performance featured on the new album 'Vulnicura' which is another masterpiece. After the brief intermission we were in more familiar territory with powerful and moving interpretations of some of her more famous songs. Jöga and Bachelorette being standout versions for me personally but sadly, no 'Pagan Poetry' in this set. After two hours of magical music from Björk, the sold out audience at the Hammersmith Eventim Apollo left satisfied and amazed one again. 10/10.

The venue at Royal Arena,

My friend and I were looking for seeing the concert but everything is digital and our ticket once scan for entry not allow to scan again if you went out. So my friend has problem to come back to the concert duo to the long explain to the gate. And buying the bottle of water but is not allow to have “bottle”! They put out the water from Whole bottle of water into a cokecola paper cut. But who can drink water once in this quantity?

The sounds are amazing l!

Everything is fantastic!

But I miss to see your face - Björk

I miss to see Björk real face

I love you Björk

WRONG location!Björk is an artist you need to see. The stage was definetly too low.they should at least put a huge live screen.the first half an hour of the concert i wished i could have sit at home and listening to the cd.the sound was also very poor!

Very annoying have been also the dj before!no mention of them on the ticket....wanted to trap people there to sell food & drinks.

Saw Bjork perform at the Harpa in Reykjavik, the ticket along with the flights from the UK plus accommodation cost me a fortune, but still I have no regrets. Singing with just a string orchestra, Bjork's voice sounded as good as it ever has, and what a powerful, emotive performance from what has to be the most original artist out there.

Can't wait to see her again!

Inside the Field

Change Text Size

The field is mostly set for The 152nd Open Championship at Royal Troon. Golf’s oldest major championship returns to the Scottish seaside town of Troon, roughly 30 miles southwest of Glasgow, for the 10th time. With a classic out-and-back links design and memorable features like the par-3 eighth’s “Postage Stamp” green, Royal Troon is a fitting canvas for the game’s major stage.

World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler eyes his seventh TOUR title of 2024, after becoming the first player to win six TOUR titles before July since Arnold Palmer in 1962. Palmer proceeded to win his seventh title of the season at The Open at Royal Troon; Scheffler wouldn’t mind following this trend line.

World No. 2 Rory McIlroy aims to shake off the heartbreak from last month’s U.S. Open at Pinehurst No. 2, where he finished runner-up to Bryson DeChambeau by one stroke after making two bogeys in his last three holes, falling just short of an elusive fifth major title. It’s McIlroy’s final chance of the year to snap a major-championship winless drought that spans a decade.

Fifteen-time major champion Tiger Woods is also scheduled to compete, which would mark Woods’ first year competing in all four majors since suffering severe injuries to both legs in a 2021 car crash. Woods made the cut at this year’s Masters, setting a tournament record with his 24th consecutive made cut at Augusta National, but he missed the cut at the ensuing PGA Championship and U.S. Open.

No player has won two majors in a season since 2018. This year’s major winners thus far, who could snap that streak: Scheffler (Masters Tournament), Xander Schauffele (PGA Championship) and DeChambeau (U.S. Open).

There are three Open berths yet to be finalized, as the top three finishers who make the cut at this week’s Genesis Scottish Open, not otherwise exempt, will qualify to compete at Royal Troon.

The R&A uses several categories to determine The Open field. Here’s a look at The 152nd Open Championship field as of Thursday, July 11.

Note: Past champions Ben Curtis and Paul Lawrie are qualified for The Open but electing not to compete.
