This temple of Lord Shankar is situated at an altitude of 3600 meters above sea level. The most special thing about this temple is that the face of Lord Shiva is worshipped here. Not only this, but it is also even more special than the rest of the body of Lord Shiva is worshipped in Kathmandu, Nepal. Yes, this is the reason that this temple is very popular in the country.

This temple is also known as Pashupatinath Temple, since Rudranath is different from other temples, so people come from far away to visit this temple. According to the stories, after the Mahabharata war, the Pandavas wanted to get rid of their sins. For this, he went to Shri Krishna and wanted to know the solution from him. Then Lord Krishna advised the Pandavas to go to the shelter of Lord Shankar. There are stories that Lord Shiva was angry with the Pandavas because the Pandavas destroyed their own clan. So when the Pandavas reached Varanasi, Lord Shiva came and hid in Guptkashi, when the Pandavas reached Guptkashi, Bholenath reached Kedarnath and took the form of a bull. It is said that Pandavas received blessings from Lord Shiva.

There are popular beliefs that when Lord Shankar disappeared as a bull, the upper part of his torso appeared in "Kathmandu", which is known as Pashupatinath. Then there is the worship of Lord Shiva's arms in Tungnath, the navel in Madhyamaheshwar, the shape of the bull's back-body in Shri Kedarnath. Apart from this, it is said that Lord Shiva's jata appeared in Kalpeshwar and Mukh Rudranath. These five places are called "Panchkedar". One of them is 'Rudranath Temple'.

Rare Stone Statue

It is said that in the huge natural cave near Rudranath temple, a rare stone statue of Lord Shiva is seen in the temple. In which Lord Shiva appears to his devotees with a crooked neck. It is popularly believed that this rare idol of Mahadev, the God of the Gods, is Swayambhu and to date, no depth could be ascertained.

Rudranath Trek

rudra

Description

Reviews (1), things to take, available dates, include / exclude, rudranath trek – part of panch pedar yatra in uttarakhand.

Rudranath Trek location in 3600m, Rudra Nath is a remote but highly celebrated third pilgrimage site of the famous ‘Panch Kedar’ in the Himalayan region of Uttarakhand .

This natural rock temple is situated within a dense forest of rhododendron dwarfs and Alpine meadows. The temple is the third of five Shiva temples in the Garhwal region that make up the Panch Kedar pilgrimage circuit. Here, the deity Shiva’s face is revered as “Neelakantha Mahadeva.” The Pandavas are said to have built the temple after the great Mahabharata war. It is believed that after the war, the Pandavas left their reign in search of atonement, and in the process, they attempted to seek forgiveness from Lord Shiva.

Lord Shiva, on the other hand, was deeply affected by the bloodshed and refused to meet with the Pandavas. Lord Shiva hid in the Garhwal Himalayas in the form of a bull, and when he was caught by one of the Pandava brothers, the body of the bull submerged in the ground, only to later rapper in other forms, which is now popularly known as ‘Panch Kedar.’

The trek starts from Sagar Village, which is approximately 3 km away from Gopeshwar. The return route of this trek goes through the Anusuya Devi Temple. Rudranath should not be mistaken as any easy trek, hikers not accustomed to long journeys and altitudes might face some problems, hence it is generally advisable that trekkers practice a reasonable amount of physical fitness.

The Complete Guide To Panch Kedar Trek

Scattered across Uttarakhand are numerous temples venerating various deities from the Hindu pantheon. In the Garhwal region of the state, five esteemed shrines are dedicated to the worship of Lord Shiva, collectively known as Panch Kedar, with Kedarnath, Madhmaheshwar, Tungnath, Rudranath, and Kalpnath. The formation of these sites has diverse mythological explanations. According to a prevalent narrative, during a bygone age chronicled in Hindu scriptures, the Pandava princes, protagonists of the Mahabharata, were advised to seek penance in Uttarakhand to atone for the bloodshed in the war. Legend has it that Lord Shiva, concealing himself in the form of a buffalo, was uncovered by Bhima, one of the Pandava brothers. Upon recognition, the deity vanished and materialized in five distinct Himalayan locations. Each of these sites is believed to represent a specific aspect of the Lord: Kedarnath symbolizes the hump, Madhmaheshwar represents the belly button, Tungnath embodies the arms, Rudranath depicts the face, and Kalpeshwar signifies the jata or hair.

The idyllic trek is through quaint villages of the Urgam valley. You walk past fields initially and then through lush meadows. You can see the Kalpganga river to your right.

The bridge on the across the river just before the temple was washed away during the cloudburst and floods of 2013. A balanced walk over the makeshift bridge and the final climb takes one to the rustic temple of Kalpeshwar. A 150 meters side trip from the main road near Lyari, takes one to Dhyan Badri temple. It is not part of the Panch Badri  temples, but it is worth visiting this ancient temple.

The next stop on this trek is Rudranath. There are three options to do this part of the trek. One is to continue from Devgram via Kalgot. You will find more details here . The other option is to drive from Helang to Saggar and begin the the trek from there. The details mentioned here are for going to Rudranath from Saggar via Panar and descending via Nala Pass and Anusuya Devi temple. You can also reverse this route. However, keep in mind that the Panar route has a lot of steps on a steep trail, which can make descending on this route tough on your knees.

Day 3: Saggar to Panar

  • Altitude:  11,155 ft
  • Time taken:  6-8 hours; 12 km
  • Trek gradient:  Difficult. Steep climb all the way to Panar
  • Water sources:  You can refill your water bottles from streams or at dhabas on the trail.

Take the route through Saggar. This is where Suryavanshi King Saggar, a descendant of King Harishchandra, had spent his childhood.

The route is a very steep climb through a dense forest. The trail is well laid, with steps cut out all the way to Panar.

On the way you hear the chirping of birds, noise of the crickets and cicadas, rustling of leaves by the langurs. The gurgling waterfalls add to the surreal experience. Drinking water directly from the freshwater streams is rejuvenating. There are hardly any trekkers to be seen.

There are less than half a dozen dhabas on the entire route to Rudranath. These dhabas provide good food and basic overnight staying facilities. One positive aspect of these dhabas was the availability of enclosed toilets.

From Panar you can see the beautiful snow-capped mountains of Nanda Devi, Trishul and Nanda ghunti and the Bandarpoonch massif. In the month of August and September Panar turns into a carpet of pinkish red flowers. There is a dhaba in a smaller meadow just before Panar (Lungti Bugyal), where you can stay overnight.

Day 4: Panar to Rudranath. Return to Panch Ganga

  • Altitude:  11,811 ft
  • Time taken:  6-7 hours; 11 km
  • Trek gradient: Moderate-Difficult. Steep climb all the way to Panar
  • Water sources:  None till you reach Panch Ganga. Carry at least 2 litres of water.

Start early in the morning for Rudranath. Take the trail that moves towards the ridge to the left. You will see some huge boulders and snow capped peaks to your left.

The trail gradually climbs up the ridge. You will notice some undergrowth on the way. After 25-30 minutes of ascent, you can see the Panar meadows below. In another 30-40 minutes, you reach a huge overhanging boulder on the left. From here, the scene is magnificent – the vast green meadows of Panar below and snow capped peaks in front, engulfed in clouds.

Continue on the trail that climbs up the ridge. As you climb up you see huge boulders on the right and in the front. You will pass several boulders and eventually reach the ridge between Panar and Rudranath. The views of the Himalayas from this ridge are unmatched. You are surrounded on all sides by snow capped peaks and lush green valleys.

This is also the place where you see another trail going down to the left. This is the one to Anusuya Devi, which you will take on the return.

Proceed ahead on the trail. You are now surrounded by colourful flowers and shrubs. Notice the temporary shepherd settlement made of stone to your left. Continue on the mud trail that gradually ascends, keeping the valley to your left. You will soon see prayer bells and flags in the distance. It takes 15-20 minutes to reach them.

This is Panch Ganga, the highest point on this trail. It takes 3-3.5 hours to reach here from Panar. Enroute, you also pass Pitradhar, where our forefathers are said to have departed for the other realms. There is a small unattended shrine here. The view from Rudranath temple is stupendous. We see a wide range of icy Himalayan mountain peaks. Nanda Devi and Kamet peaks look very enticing, specially at sunrise.

From Panch Ganga, the trail now descends into the valley. You see bright flowers and shrubs around. This valley is known for medicinal herbs. Continue on the trail as it climbs up a ridge. Spread over a couple of hundred metres on either side of the ridge are colourful wildflowers and a lush green meadow.

Rudranath shrine becomes visible at a distance after an hour of hike. The trail descends first and then ascends. In 25-30 minutes you will reach a brightly painted tourist hut. It has 2 rooms that are used by pilgrims and tourists who wish to stay overnight at Rudranath. You can also make your way to back to Panch Ganga and stay at a  dhaba  there.

Day 5: Panch Ganga to Mandal via Naola Pass and Anusuya Devi temple

  • Altitude:  14,000 ft
  • Time taken:  7-8 hours; 11 km
  • Trek gradient:  Moderate. Steep descent to Anusuya Devi followed by a moderate descent to Mandal
  • Water sources:  One dhaba just before Anusuya Devi temple. Carry at least 2 litres of water.

The route via Naola Pass is through an isolated forest, offering splendid views at every clearing. It is a unique sight to see mountain goats on precarious slopes. If lucky, you might even sight a viper snake. There is only one dhaba on the way to Anusuya Devi. It is likely that you will not meet even a single pilgrim enroute!

There is a possibility that you might have to cross a tributary of the Ganga on the way by wading through it if the bridge over it is broken. If you are attempting this route in monsoon, check at Panch Ganga before proceeding whether it is safe to cross the river.

Anusuya Devi is 11 km from Panch Ganga. It will take you 3-4 hours to get here.

Story of Anusuya Devi: The three Goddesses Lakshmi, Saraswati and Parvati were very vain about their prowess. Devrishi Narad informed them that there is a lady called Anusuya who is more superior. She was the wife of Brahmarishi Atri. The 3 jealous Goddesses coaxed their respective husbands to go and test her. Lords Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva hesitatingly approached her. They decided to ask her a tough question which would be impossible for her to fulfill and then they would be able to quickly return. They posed as Brahmins and asked her for food. But the condition was that she had to serve them in a naked form. Anusuya was shocked but realized that the Brahmins must be fed. She thought of her husband Atri for help, who was meditating in a nearby cave. She then sprinkled water on the 3 Brahmins, who turned into newborn infants! The 3 Lords were humbled. They blessed Anusuya with 3 kids viz. Dattatreya, Soma and Durvasa, who are their incarnations. They also blessed her that couples who have difficulty in becoming parents can approach her.

There is an optional detour to Atri Rishi’s cave once you cross the stream. Proceed to Mandal after seeing Anusya Devi temple. The bus to Chopta is at 1.00 pm the following day.

Day 6: Reach Chopta

Chopta is about an hour's drive from Mandal. This is a very beautiful drive. The only bus leaves at 1.00 pm. Get some well deserved rest in the morning before boarding the bus.

Chopta is the base for a small but uphill trek to Tungnath temple. Tungnath is the highest located Shiva temple in the world.

Day 7: See Tungnath. Reach Ransi

  • Altitude:  12,083 ft
  • Time taken:  2-3 hours; 6 km
  • Trek gradient:  Moderate. Steep ascent to Tungnath
  • Water sources:  None. Carry at least 2 litres of water.

The trek from Chopta to Tungnath is accessible via a cemented pilgrim trail. The trail ascends sharply via a series of 11 scissor bends. The walk is pleasant, but is a very steep climb. The trek up to Tungnath temple is approximately 3 km. After you reach the 10th scissor bend, look for a flag and a small open temple towards your right side.

You can now see Chandrashila peak and Tungnath temple complex at the base of the peak. The views from here onwards are incredible. A connecting peak leading to Chandrashila, known as Ravanshila, is visible to your right.

Tungnath temple is only half a kilometre away from here. Towards your left, overlooking the valley is a section of Birch trees (Bhojpatra). This is a haven for birds like Monal and Griffin vulture. Take the 11th and last bend to reach the famous and holy Tungnath temple.

The temple is closed in winter and you will find snow here from late December until around April.

Return to Chopta on the same trail. Board the afternoon bus to Ukhimath. Take the connecting bus from Ukhimath and reach Ransi by evening. The connecting bus waits for the bus from Chopta before starting from Ukhimath.

Ukhikmath is well known for the famous Omkareshwar temple, home to the idols from Kedarnath and Madhyamaheshwar in winter.

Day 8: Trek to Nanu, enroute Madhyamaheswar

  • Altitude: 7,743 ft
  • Time taken:  6 hours; 10 km
  • Trek gradient:  Moderate.
  • Water sources:  Carry two litres of water and keep hydrating yourself. You can refill your water bottles from  dhabas along the trail.

Ransi is the starting point for another arduous trek to Madhyamaheshwar. The trail is well marked and easy to follow. The flora on the route is amazing and so is the fauna. You will see butterflies, mountain goats, lizards, sheep, guard dogs, monkeys, several birds etc. The village kids seem to be living their lives to the fullest.

The temple itself is set against a very beautiful backdrop of sloping hills and meadows. Another small trek to Budha Maheshwar is recommended for those who want to see a nice sunrise.

The trail from Ransi begins with a gentle ascent for about 25 minutes and tapers off into a level walk. Another 10 minutes into it, you will see the trail passing through a small stream near a stone made hut which is a part of the “Gharat” system used to grind wheat using the ancient water wheel technology. Continue on the mud path for 10-15 minutes and you will see that the trail now enters a green forest with huge trees on both sides. The trail now moves downwards on a stone paved path.

Continue descending on the stone paved trail for 45 minutes to an hour till you reach the bridge over a river, with a grand view and deafening roar of a waterfall cascading down. Cross the river coming from your left on a steel bridge and you are on the trail, which now starts to climb up gently. Continue on the trail for 20 minutes until you see a huge boulder on your left. The overhanging boulder with walls built on 2 sides serve as a temporary rest area. Continue the upward climb for 1 km and you will reach Gaundhar, a scenic place. On the way you cross 2 more bridges at an interval of 5-10 minutes each. Also you come across a small temple on the right hand side of the trail. It takes around 2 hours to reach Gaundhar from Ransi. You can break here for lunch.

After having lunch continue on the trail that descends down. You can see the steel bridge after descending down for 10-15 minutes. After crossing the bridge you come to Bantoli village. This is 1 km from Gaundhar. Bantoli is a fantastic place, ideally facing the confluence of MartyendaGanga and Madhymaheshwar ganga. You will see a few houses with straw on roof with a lot of welcome sentences written in Bengali. Continue on the trail and you will come across the two storied Vishwa Lodge.

The trail now ascends in the north-west direction from Bantoli towards Nanu. Continue ascending on the trail for 15- 20 minutes and you will see the top view of thick forested growth, with two rivers Madhymaheshwar Ganga and Martyenda Ganga and a bridge on one of the rivers. The trail which we traversed an hour ago is also in focus. Another 45 minutes into the trail and you will come across a huge boulder on the left side of the trail.

Continue on the trail till you reach Khatara which consists of just two shacks, one a dhaba and a shelter for pilgrims with very basic amenities. Khatara is 2 km from Bantoli. The trail continues uphill gradually on the stone paved path. Continue on the trail for another 30 minutes and you will see the trail is now covered with a pile of brown leaves shed by trees on both sides of the trail. Slight drizzle to heavy rain is a common phenomenon in June. Continue on the trail that goes uphill for another 1 – 1.5 hours and you will reach Nanu. You can camp here tonight or stay in the lodge.

If you are running short of time, you can also consider trekking all the way to Madhyamaheshwar, which is 6 km ahead of Nanu.

Day 9: Trek to Madhyamaheswar. Visit Budha Madh

  • Altitude: 11,483   ft
  • Time taken:  6 hours; 6 km

This is a relatively easy day for trekking. Proceed ahead on the trail that goes uphill on the stone paved path. You can see the trail going zig-zag upwards. After 35 – 40 minutes into the hike you will come across a mushroom shaped rest area. There are several rest areas on the trail as this is used by the pilgrims going to Madhymaheshwar. After 50 minutes into the hike you will see a signboard indicating the name of the place and also the elevation.

You will see a blue water tank and couple of huts in Moukhom Chatti which is located at 8,596 ft and around 1.5 km from Nanu. Proceed ahead on the trail uphill. The trail takes you through magnificent landscapes and enthralling natural surroundings. Continue on the trail for 5 – 10 minutes and you will see that it now passes through forest cover with trees on either side. The oak forest grows darker after Moukhom Chatti. Another 30- 45 minutes into the hike after Moukhom Chatti you will come across Kun Chatti which is around 1.5 km. You will see a signboard indicating the elevation 9,121 ft. At Kun Chatti you will come across a shack named Prince hotel which serves as a dhaba and resting place. You can get tea / lemon water here.

The last few kilometres are an arduous and continuous climb. Proceed ahead as you now enter the zone of rhododendron forests on both side of the trail. The fresh little pinkish buds of the flowers or tender leaves, all around, give a dash of warm colour to the landscape. All along the trail you will see several markings (e.g. K.M. 32) on the way on stones written in black on a white background that indicate the distance. As you venture deep into the forest you come across several Himalayan birds.

After 2 – 2.5 hours into the trek you will come across some meadows on the right and you will see cattle grazing on green pastures. This indicates that you are near the top. Continue on the trail for another 45 minutes and you will see the trail emerge from the forest as it moves around the mountain to appear at the Madhyamaheshwar meadow. The trail climbs up all the way and becomes flat just before Madhyamaheshwar. At 11,483 ft. Madhyamaheshwar is a unique Himalayan destination with green carpet like bugyals with plenty of small bushes all round. The calm and serene environment is spell binding. You will see that the  Madhymaheshwar valley shows forest cover at the back ground, signifying that this place must be getting abundant amount of rainfall round the year.  You can also see corrugated and thatched roof structures along the route to the temple which are guest houses or dhabas.

You can pitch a tent or stay in the temple guest house /local huts.

Day 10: Return to Ransi

  • Altitude: 6,440   ft
  • Time taken:  6-7 hours; 16 km

Wake up early in the morning to visit Buda Madh. The sunrise here is spectacular.

Budha Madh is around 1,000 ft higher than Madhymaheshwar. Buda Madh is at the top of the ridge lying to the north-west of the temple. Facing the temple start moving on the trail that connects the ridge on your left keeping the temple to your right. Proceed on the trail for 30 – 45 minutes till you reach the top. You see mesmerizing views of the Chaukhamba group of peaks and Mandani Parbat from here.

After breakfast, descend to Ransi .

Day 11: Reach Gaurikund

The 73 km journey from Ransi to Gaurikund can be broken down into multiple bus ride. First to Ukhimath, next to Kund, further on to Sonprayag and finally a shared taxi to Gaurikund. You can also hire a private taxi. This costs around Rs.700 from Ransi to Kund.

Gaurikund is where the 16 km trek to Kedarnath begins.

Day 12: Trek to Kedarnath

  • Altitude: 11,657   ft
  • Time taken:  6-7 hours; 16 km one way

The newly laid trail to Kedarnath is slightly longer than the older route, but it has many facilities. There are a lot of drinking water taps, mobile and fixed toilets, dhabas and first aid chowkies. You cross quite a few waterfalls. There is a constant stream of pilgrims, both walkers and horse-riders.

To see the broken old route on the opposite side of the mountain is saddening. But then seeing the massive Bhim sheela right behind the Kedarnath temple will touch even the most hardened atheist heart. During the fatal cloud burst of 2013, a big chunk of mountain slid down towards the temple town. Out of nowhere a massive stone appeared and blocked the path of this land slide. The Kedarnath temple was protected from any damage.

After darshan at Kedarnath temple, begin the trek back to Gauri Kund. It is difficult to describe the feelings, one experiences as the yatra came to an end.

If you're running short on time, it is possible to start very early in the morning for Kedarnath and return to Gaurikund the same day.

Day 13/14: Return to Haridwar

Board an early morning bus from Sonprayag and reach Haridwar by evening.

Please note: it is advisable to take a guide for the Rudranath trek.

How To Reach The Base Of The Trek

Another option is to take an overnight bus from Dehradun to Joshimath or Tapovan. There are also daily buses from Haridwar to Badrinath. Take one of these and get off at Helang, which is just before Joshimath, on the way to Badrinath.

The trek begins from Devgram (6,614 ft), a village in the Urgam valley. Be prepared to wait for a shared cab to Devgram since this depends on the number of available passengers at any given time.

If the road is broken after Lyari, your trek will begin earlier than Devgram since you will now have to walk this distance.

Rudranath Trek: A Sacred Pilgrimage Amidst the Himalayas

1. introduction.

Trekking to Rudranath is a soul-stirring journey that takes you through the rugged terrain of the Himalayas, immersing you in a world of ancient myths, breathtaking vistas, and spiritual awakening. Situated in the Garhwal region of Uttarakhand, India, Rudranath is one of the Panch Kedar, a group of five sacred temples dedicated to Lord Shiva.

The trek to Rudranath begins in the picturesque village of Sagar, where the air is crisp with the scent of pine and the sound of distant mountain streams fills the valley. As you embark on your journey, the towering peaks of the Himalayas loom majestically in the distance, beckoning you to discover the secrets they hold.

The trail winds its way through dense forests of rhododendron, oak, and deodar, offering glimpses of exotic wildlife and colorful flora along the way. Each step brings you closer to the heart of the mountains, where the air grows thinner and the landscape more rugged.

As you ascend higher into the mountains, the true majesty of the Himalayas unfolds before you. Snow-capped peaks pierce the sky, while cascading waterfalls tumble down rocky cliffs, creating a symphony of sound and motion that echoes through the valleys.

The journey to Rudranath is not without its challenges. The trail is steep and rocky in places, requiring strength, endurance, and a spirit of determination to conquer. But with each obstacle overcome, the sense of accomplishment grows, fueling your determination to reach the sacred temple that lies at the end of the path.

Finally, after days of trekking through some of the most breathtaking scenery on earth, you arrive at Rudranath – a place of profound spiritual significance for Hindus around the world. The temple itself is a masterpiece of ancient architecture, its stone walls adorned with intricate carvings and symbols that tell the stories of gods and heroes from ages past.

But it is not just the temple that leaves a lasting impression on those who make the journey to Rudranath. It is the sense of peace and tranquility that permeates the air, the feeling of being in the presence of something greater than oneself.

As you stand before the sanctum sanctorum of Rudranath, surrounded by the beauty and majesty of the Himalayas, you can't help but feel a sense of awe and reverence for the natural world and the divine forces that shape it. In that moment, you realize that the true magic of Rudranath lies not in the destination, but in the journey itself – a journey of discovery, enlightenment, and spiritual renewal that will stay with you long after you have returned to the world below.

Hey Himalayas

Rudranath Trek

Rudranath trek overview.

Rudranath Trek is filled with the vibrant, peaceful, and fascinating colors of mother nature. In this trek, two of the five Kedars—Kalpeshwar and Rudranat, located in Uttrakhand are covered. The Kalpeshwar Rudranath trek runs through dense forests, verdant valleys, verdant meadows, lovely wild flower beds, and high hills, all of which provide breathtaking vistas. The trail is clearly marked and passes through several charming towns along the way. You will also witness the stunning vistas of the Nanda Devi, Trishul, and Nanda Ghunti peaks that will quickly ensnare the viewer.

The spectacular campground is above the vibrant flower beds and enveloped in clouds with a bird's-eye view of a lush green pasture. And as you take the arduous uphill climb, you will be rewarded with a spectacular view of the snow-capped Himalayan hills in the front. The route from Dumak to the tall grasslands at Panar seems difficult, with protracted ascents and some areas where leeches are present, especially during and shortly after the rainy season. The remainder of the walk is simple and provides amazing scenery of the Alpine meadows, deep canyons brimming with wild, vibrant flowers, and lovely villages. One can see the hazy outlines of the foothills and Alaknanda cutting its way to the bottom to the plains from the peak between Panar and Rudranath.

On guidance from gurus and their beloved benefactor deity Krishna they asked Lord Shiva to forgive them and enable them to gain salvation. Shiva wanted to get away from them since he was upset with them for their behavior during the Kurukshetra conflict. He converted himself into a bull or Nandi inside the Himalayan Garhwal area. But after spotting Shiva as a bull grazing in the hills of Guptakashi, the tenacious Pandavas sought to restrain the bull by force.

However, the tenacious Pandavas attempted to forcefully grab the bull with its tails and rear legs after spotting Shiva in the shape of the bull feeding in the foothills of Guptakashi. But the bull vanished beneath the earth, only to return later at five different locations as Lord Shiva. The five locations where Lord Shiva appeared was at Kedarnath, Tungnath, Rudranath, Madhyamaheshwar, and Kalpeshwar. When Lord Shiva appeared in five distinct locations, the Pandavas were delighted. They erected temples at each location, worshiped Shiva, and received his blessings to find redemption. Later, AdiSankaracharya found the temples

The Mythology of Rudranath Temple

The Rudranath Temple is believed to have been established by the Pandavas , the heroes of the Hindu epic Mahabharata . The Pandavas defeated and slayed their cousins, the Kauravas in the epic Kurukshetra war . They wished to atone for the sins of committing fratricide (gotra hatya) and Brahmanahatya (killing of Brahmins; the priest class) during the war. Thus, they handed over the reins of their kingdom to their kin and left in search of lord Shiva to seek his blessings.

But Lord Shiva didn’t appear in front of the pandas. Shiva kept running away from Pandavas. Shiva disappeared into the ground to later reappear in parts, with the hump appearing in Kedarnath , the arms appearing in Tungnath , the face appearing at Rudranath , the nabhi (navel) and stomach appearing in Madhyamaheshwar and the hair appearing in Kalpeshwar . The Pandavas pleased with this reappearance in five different forms, built temples at the five places for venerating and worshipping Shiva. The Pandavas were thus freed from their sins.

Named after Lord Shiva (Rudra), Rudraprayag is situated at the holy confluence of Alaknanda and Mandakini rivers, at a distance of 34 km from Srinagar (Garhwal). Rudra Prayag is a small town that is located in the state of Uttarakhand and in the district of Rudraprayag. The town is situated at the confluence of the River Alaknanda and River Mandakini. It has a special religious significance for many people as well. It is said that the place where the two rivers meet resembles two sisters embracing each other and there is a unique beauty about the place. Many visitors travel to the place to witness this phenomenon every year. The entire area is surrounded by immense beauty and one can see many lakes, glaciers, rivers and streams here.

Rudraprayag is the confluence of 2 rivers Alaknanda and Mandakini, both tributaries of Ganga. Rudranath is a temple, which is a part of the Panch Kedar circuit. There are 3 ways to reach Rudranath temple: A> From Kalpeshwar temple/ Devgram, it is a 12 km trek to Dumak, another 13 km trek to Panar and final 8 km trek to Rudranath B> It is also possible to reach from Saggar, on the Kund-Chopta-Mandal-Saggar-Gopeshwar-Chamoli Road. From Saggar it is 12 km to Panar and then final 8 km to Rudranath (via Pitradhar and Panch Ganga). This route is very tough through a dense forest. But climbing up may be slightly better option than coming down from here. There are quite a few dhabas on this route. These dhabas provide good food and basic overnight staying facilities and enclosed toilets. On the way we hear the chirping of birds, noise of the crickets and cicadas, rustling of leaves by the langurs. The gurgling waterfalls add to the surreal experience. Drinking water directly from the fresh water streams is rejuvenating. The 360 degree Himalayan view from Panar will remain etched in my memory forever. The elegant Monal bird and grazing cattle add to the beauty. Pitradhar is a place where our forefathers are said to have departed for the other realms. There is a small unattended shrine here. C> Again on the Kund-Chopta-Mandal-Saggar-Gopeshwar-Chamoli Road, one can climb from Mandal. This is 5 km trek to Anusuya Devi temple and another 11 km trek to Panch Ganga and final 3 km to Rudranath temple. After Anusuya Devi, this track is isolated. But this route is good for trekking down, through the Naola pass which is around 14,000 ft above MSL. It is unique sight to see mountain goats on precarious slopes. We even sight a viper snake. We did have to cross a knee-deep Ganga tributary, as a bridge was broken. The view from Rudranath temple is stupendous. We see a wide range of icy Himalayan mountain peaks. Nanda Devi and Kamet peaks look very enticing, specially at sunrise. Taking a guide along for the entire Rudranath trip is highly recommended, as it is the toughest trek a pilgrim may ever do!

Rudranath is 4th place of Panch Kedar Darshan after kedarnath/MadhyaMaheshwar/Tunganath. It is one of the toughest trek of all Kedar where Face of Lord Shiva is worshiped. There exist 3 route to reach Rudranath. 1. Gopeshwar- Saggar(by vehicle 4 Km) - (By trek) 18 Km Paner- Rudranath. 2. Urgam - Devgram-Dhakwani_ Paner- Rudranath. 3. Mandal- Anasuya Devi- panchganga-rudranath, Of all the three route, only route-1, one can go without Guide. Route-2 is very narrow route and steep not frequented by pilgrimage. route -3 is longer and need min 4 days from Urgam. But Kalpeshwar Mahadev the 5th Panch Kedar is near by just 1 Km from URgam by road. After scanning few details, reached Gopeshwar on 2nd Morning at 10 AM, dumped the excess luggage in GMVNL guest house which just front on main bus stand. With few warm cloth and other thing we took an vehicle up to the Saggar village it is just 3 Km from Gopeshwar. started tredk at 10:30 AM. The starting point is near Hotel Rudra on Main road and is well demarcated by Welcome Mantap. This is the route to be followed for Ustav moorti during opening and closing. It is exactly 18 Km from this point up to Rudranath Temple. The first 1.5 Km is going through Village/ Agricultural Field with moderate gradient and paved with concrete. At 1.5 Km there is a shop for juice/ Tea/ Biscuts etc. one can take rest here for a while. For normal person it takes about 1.5 hrs to reach here. From here upto Pana Bugyal is approx 1 Km and road is unpaved and un even. and gradient keep increasing. with bush on either side. By the time we reached Pana Bugyal it was around 12 30PM, There is a tent shed/ accommodation for night stay is available. (Rs 300 /head ) From here steep gradient starts and road is full of un

Firstrek's Rudranath trek was the perfect blend of adventure and serenity. The accommodations were cozy, the food delicious, and the trek itself was mind-blowing. Kudos to their team for creating such a well-rounded experience.

Places to Visit During Drive:   Rishikesh – Devprayag – Rudraprayag – Karnaprayag – Helang – Urgam

Day 2 Urgam - Devgaon – Kalpeshwar – Dumak

Urgam is a beautiful valley surrounded with villages and organized vegetation. Start off early in the morning and trek towards Kalpeshwar from Urgam. It takes more than an hour to reach Kalpeshwar Temple from Urgam. You can visit Dhyan Badri temple in Devgaon as well. After morning aarti in Kalpeshwar start the trek to Dumak. After crossing the village the trail goes through beautiful terrace fields and a couple of shepherd huts.

The altitude gradually increases as you climb up the trail but there is no steep climb involved. After trekking for 3 hours, you’ll reach a pass which will open up the view of other side of the valley. The trail will be followed with sharp descent there on. Rest for a while in a village you come across then trek further down to the bridge. As soon as you cross the bridge, you’ll see a temple. Dumak is another 1hour away from this place. Dumak is a remote village situated at an altitude of 2400 mts above sea level. Night stay in Dumak.

Day 3 Dumak – Toli Bugyal – Panar

Cross the village by trekking on the right side of the village. Trek down to the bridge. It takes less than an hour to reach this bridge from Dumak. The remaining distance of the trek is mainly uphill steep climb. The trail passes through Toli Bugyal a nice but slightly creepy looking campsite. There is Toli Tal at Toli Bugyal but its water is not worth drinking or cooking. Toli Bugyal is situated at an altitude of 2850mts above sea level. Rest here for lunch then proceed towards Panar Bugyal.

Another 3 hours of steep climb through virgin forest opens up at Panar Bugyal. This small yet gorgeous meadow is situated at an elevation of 3400mts above sea level. This is the most beautiful campsite of the entire trek.

Day 4 Panar – Rudranath

This is probably the most rewarding day of this entire trekking stretch. 15 minutes into the trek and the Himalayas on the left will greet you with open arms. This is followed with a narrow ridge that leads to highest point of the trek, Pitradhar (4000 mts). You’ll see bells and prayer flags hanging at a small temple known as Pitradhar. The trail is mostly downhill from this point and passes through Panch Dhara. Since there is very limited camping ground at Rudranath, most people try and trek back to Panar on same day. Rudranath is a very unique place to be at and it is surrounded by scenic vistas. It is situated at an altitude of 3600 mts above sea level.

Day 5 Rudranath – Anusuya Devi Temple

Hike up towards Pitradhar and thereon proceed towards Naola Pass. The trek further passes through untouched meadows of Dhanpal Bugyal and Hansa Bugyal to reach Anusuya Devi Temple. Rudranath Temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva , reveals the deity in a natural rock face. Unlike other temples where idols are worshipped, here, Shiva is venerated in his 'Ekanan' form. The temple's secluded location and the journey to reach it enhance its mystical appeal. The region is a treasure trove of biodiversity, home to a variety of flora and fauna, including rare medicinal herbs, vibrant rhododendrons, and elusive wildlife such as the Himalayan monal. Each season transforms the trek’s landscape, from the lush greens of post-monsoon to the mesmerizing snow cover in winter, making every visit a unique experience.

All About It

  • For 12+ years
  • Best Season - Summer (May, June, July) September October

Uttarakhand, better known as the Devbhumi (land of Gods), is truly one of the most heavenly parts of the earth. One of the tales of its rich past relates to a set of five Shiva temples known as Panch Kedar, which includes - Kedarnath, Tungnath, Rudranath, Madhyamaheshwar and Kalpeshwar. These sacred sites of Lord Shiva are located in the Garhwal region of Uttarakhand. The story of their origin is mostly traced to the Pandavas (from the Hindu epic Mahabharata). Each of the temples is placed on the most serene and unruffled parts of the Indian Himalayas. No direct motorable road goes straight to the temples. Every temple requires some amount of trekking with varying levels of difficulty.

Undertaking Panch Kedar Yatra will take you on a long magnificent journey to remember for a lifetime. Attached with the element of sacredness, the meadows, mountains, snow-covered peaks, wildlife and streams - all attain a more special significance. The Panch Kedar pilgrimage normally takes 15/16 days to complete.

LEGEND BEHIND THE FORMATION OF PANCH KEDAR

Legends have a way of getting twirled or divided into many streams while they go down the timeline through centuries. One of the versions of the most popular legend associated with the formation of Panch Kedar relates to the era of Mahabharata. After killing their blood relatives and gurus, the enormous load of remorse made the Pandavas seek Lord Shiva for atonement.

Enraged with their actions and dishonesty on the war field, Lord Shiva evaded their requests. He hid at Guptkashi in the Himalayas of Garhwal disguised as a bull. Pandavas came looking for Shiva in the Garhwal region and recognized God Shiva in the form of a bull. Bhim tried to catch hold of the bull but it dived in the ground and vanished.

That is why, it is believed, the site of Guptkashi (Hidden Kashi) got its name.

Shiva reappeared in different parts of Garhwal. Hump came up at Kedarnath, navel appeared at Madhya-Maheshwar, face emerged at Rudranath, arms at Tungnath and hair at Kalpeshwar.

Pandavas built temples at each of the five places where the Lord emerged as such. Taken together these five places came to be known as Panch Kedar.

Given below are the five most important homes of Lord Shiva in Garhwal Himalayas in the sequence in which they should be visited:

Panch Kedar is a spiritual tour of the five temples dedicated to Lord Shiva, located in the Uttarakhand state of India. It is believed that after the Mahabharata war, the Pandavas sought forgiveness from Lord Shiva for the sins they had committed in the war. Lord Shiva, in response, hid himself in various forms in these temples, and the Pandavas had to find him in each form to seek his blessings.

The Rudranath Temple is the third stop on the Panch Kedar tour. It is located at an altitude of 2,286 meters above sea level and is dedicated to Lord Shiva in the form of a face. This temple is surrounded by beautiful meadows and offers a stunning view of the Himalayas.

Who should attend?

According to Hinduism the Pilgrimage tirthayatra , is one of the five duties of every Hindu, along with Dharma, Worship, Sanskaras and Observing religious festivals. A pilgrimage is an exercise in willpower, humility and faith, when the devotee travels to often difficult locations, leaving his problems at the feet of the Deity and forgetting everything but God.

A pilgrimage is an intimate experience, a direct connection between the seeker and the sacred. A devotee goes on pilgrimage to see holy men and women, to worship at holy shrines, to have darshan of Deities abiding in ancient sanctums. A pilgrim journeys to see God have a life-changing, bliss-engendering, karma-eradicating contact with the Divine.

THINGS TO CARRY

1. Wearing layers is the mantra in the mountains. Layers give you maximum protection from all elements. You will need at least 5 warm layers (Insulin layers). You will need at least 1 pair of inner thermals, 2 light fleece layers, 1  light sweater, and 1  padded jacket. Ensure your padded jacket has a hood as well. A minimum of one pair and a maximum of two pairs of trek pants should suffice for this trek. Wear one pair and carry one just in case it rains/snows. Trek pants with zippered cut offs at the thighs are very suitable for treks. Also, choose quick-dry pants over cotton

Sunglasses - Sunglasses are to prevent snow blindness. A small overexposure to direct sunlight on snow can lead to snow blindness (about a half hour’s exposure). That’s because fallen snow is like thousands of mirrors that reflect direct UV rays. So you need sunglasses with UV protection.

Buying Tip: Try getting sunglasses that wrap around instead of those that have openings on the side. Even peripheral UV ray exposure is not a good idea.

3. Synthetic Hand Gloves - Get synthetic hand gloves that have waterproofing on the outside and a padded lining on the inside. If you find the combination difficult to get (not likely), wear a tight-fitting fleece hand glove inside a synthetic hand glove. Hand gloves are mandatory on this trek.

4. Woollen Cap - a woollen head cap that covers your head and ears is absolutely essential.

5. Socks - Apart from three to four pairs of sports socks, take a pair of woolen socks. Sports socks give you cushioning plus warmth. Again the mantra is to wear synthetic socks or at least a synthetic blend. Cotton socks soak in water and sweat. They are very hard to dry. As for woolen socks, they help you to keep warm and snug in the night. If you cannot get woolen socks, wearing two sports socks serves the purpose as well.

6.Power Bank

7. Thermos for water

8. Medication (As per medical conditions if any and is subscribed by a doctor)

9.Extra cover for your electronic gear items/Valuables.

10. Quick Dry Towel/Towel

11. Torch/headlamp

12. A tiffin box with a spoon for packed lunch, we try reduced usage of plastic/paper as much as possible

13. Poncho/Rain Cover

14. Do not leave plastic wrappers(chips, chocolates etc) behind while on Trek and yes! don't forget your "Mask" of course!
