Happiness Promise

There are hundreds of thousands of guides and tour operators around the world. Figuring out who to trust is stressful and hard.

That’s why we started 10Adventures Tours, we’re here to make it easy to find a great guide or tour operator. We handpick the best local guides and tour operators for 10Adventures, working to ensure you have great guides and a great trip.

We know it sucks to show up in a different country and find out the tents are junk, the guide incompetent or the route different from what we thought we were getting.

We want to give our users peace of mind that you’ll have a great trip and offer a guarantee that we will work with you to make it right.

How does this work? Well, if you feel that something about your trip didn’t’ meet your expectations, let us know. We will then work to gather the details and figure out where things went wrong. If something indeed wasn’t as described, or went wrong with your trip, and the problem was within the control of either oursleves, the guide or the tour company, we will then work out a refund with you that’s proportional to the scale of the problem.

Obviously the best way to make a great trip is to tell your local guide or tour operator and give them the chance to fix the solution while you are on your trip. Most things can be solved by telling your guide when the issue develops. If that doesn’t solve it, then email us right away. Please don’t wait to voice your concerns until the trip is over, as it’s much harder to solve issues after the fact.

We work hard to make sure you have a great trip. If something isn’t right, please email  [email protected]  and we will get to work right away.

Moshi Town to Tinga Tinga Village

Start your bike trip around Kilimanjaro on a great ride that takes you from the greener southern side of Mt. Kilimanjaro towards the more arid western side of the mountain. Your ride today will start by going through coffee and banana plantations, however as you head west you will cycle through the more arid open plains and acacia woodlands. These plains support a remarkable variety of wildlife and spectacular views of Mt. Kilimanjaro.

While Moshi is home the Chagga people, the plains to the west of Kilimanjaro are home to the nomadic Maasai people who co-exist with the surrounding wildlife. Your ride today will be on both dirt and tarmac roads and you will finish the ride at the Ngabobo village where you will be spending the night.

Tinga Tinga Village to West Kilimanjaro Farms

Today’s bike ride goes through the Enduimet Wildlife Management Area, which is one of Tanzania’s best kept secrets. Enduimet borders Amboseli National Park and serves as an important migratory route for wildlife including African elephants. This area is inhabited primarily by the Maasai people but there are large populations of other tribes such as the Chagga, Meru and Pare people.

Your ride starts off on the wide open plains dotted with acacia trees but it gets greener as you approach the lower slopes of Kilimanjaro, where a lot of cultivation takes place. Your cycling tour today ends at Simba Farm which is situated on top of the vast wheat and barley fields overlooking the west Kilimanjaro plains.

West Kilimanjaro Farms to Nalemoru Village

Today’s ride will have you cycling towards the north east side of Mt. Kilimanjaro to Nalemoru village, near the Kenyan border. Nalemoru village is where the Rongai route up to Kilimanjaro starts off. Your ride today takes you through beautiful open farmlands with breathtaking views of the west Kilimanjaro plains behind you.

You will cycle through several vibrant towns as you head up the foothills of the mountain towards the Rongai forest. Your ride today ends at the Snowcap Cottages which are nestled right on the edge of the Rongai forest. On a clear day you can enjoy amazing views of Kilimanjaro’s Kibo and Mawenzi peaks.

Nalemoru Village to Lake Chala

Today you will enjoy a downward hill ride towards the beautiful Lake Chala, a crater lake lying right on the border between Kenya and Tanzania. Lake Chala is one of Tanzania's hidden gems. Fed entirely by underground springs from Mt Kilimanjaro, the turquoise blue and green waters are surrounded by diverse plants, trees and wildlife.

The camp where you will be spending the night is situated on the edge of this mystical caldera lake, against a dramatic volcanic backdrop providing the perfect place to unwind and absorb the serenity and tranquility of the area.

Lake Chala to Marangu

Today’s is a short but challenging day, as you ride up to Marangu village in the foothills of Kilimanjaro. As you cycle through Marangu village you will pass banana and coffee plantations along the way as well as the friendly Chagga people who will be waving and shouting “Jambo!” as you cycle by.

Before getting to your camp you will take a detour to the iconic Kinukamori waterfalls where you can stretch your legs and walk down to the base of the waterfalls. While here, a local Chagga guide will give you a brief history of the area, the people, their traditions, and customs as well as the mystical legend about the waterfalls.

After spending some time refreshing by the waterfalls you will finish the last downhill stretch of your ride towards the camp where you will be spending the night.

Marangu to Moshi

You will be wrapping up your last day of cycling by traversing the villages and plantations on the slopes of Mt. Kilimanjaro. The first half of the ride will be comprised of several steep ascents and descents followed by a second half which is a gradual downhill ride towards the bustling and vibrant Moshi Town.

You will cycle through the suburbs and outskirts of Moshi Town on the back roads as you head towards the Panama Garden Resort which marks the end of your incredible 6-day journey around Mt. Kilimanjaro, on two wheels. You will seal of the evening with a nice celebratory dinner and sparkling wine to toast to your achievement.

Today it’s all up to you and what time your flight leaves. If you have time, you can explore the town of Moshi and find some souvenirs to commemorate your summit of Mount Kilimanjaro. Consider sparing an hour of your time to help our environmental conservation efforts by planting a tree in the Kilimanjaro region.

Bike Tour to Summit

IMG_20230918_084951.jpg

A very special way to conquer majestic Mount Kilimanjaro is to summit by mountain bike. We offer this tour as a 6 day trip for proper acclimatization, but it can also be done in 5 days for those who are very fit or have little time. This activity provides physical exercise and recreational use of the natural environment with minimum impact while improving visitors’ experience.

This mountain bike tour to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro (5,895 m / 19,340 ft) is done on Kilema Route, which joins Marangu Trekking Route on second day and leads all the way to the top. Our experienced guides will cycle with you the whole trip up to Uhuru Peak, our porters will carry your luggage and set up a camp for the first night. The rest of the trip you will sleep in clean mountain huts (see accommodation ).

Kilimanjaro.webp

Marangu Gate / Kilema Gate (1,950 m / 6,400 ft) to 1st camp (3,100 m / 10,170 ft)

After breakfast we will pick you up from your hotel. You will meet our team and drive to Marango Gate. The journey (1-2 hours) passes through the village of Marangu on the lower slopes of the mountain. At the gate we will register you at the Park office and the luggage will be weighed. After signing-in we drive another 30min to the Kilema gate. Upon arrival you will ensure that you have all your daypack items (containing at least drinking water, your lunch pack and extra clothing) and do a final check on your mountain bike. You will then start cycling the first route section with your guide through the lush rainforest spotting some Colobos and blue monkeys and enjoying the fascinating flora with beautiful flowers until we reach the camp. Here your tent and a hot dinner will already be waiting for you. This is the only night you will spend camping, the other nights you will sleep in huts.

- riding distance: 8 km / 5 miles - riding time: 4 hours - altitude gained: 1,150 m / 3,773 ft - habitat: rainforest, heather / moorland zone - meals included: lunch box, hot dinner

1st Camp (3,100 m / 10,170 ft) to Horombo hut (3.720 m / 12,200 ft)

After breakfast you will get on your bike again. Today´s trail is steeper, on some parts we will have to get off the bike and walk, on others we can cycle until we reach the huts for hot lunch. The afternoon you can spend relaxing, enjoing the stunning views or exploring nature until your hot dinner. - riding distance: 8 km / 5 miles - riding /hiking time: 4 hours - altitude gained: 620 m / 2,030 ft - habitat: heather / moorland zone - meals included: breakfast, hot lunch, hot dinner

Acclimatization day

(If you choose the 5 day tour this day will be omitted)

This day is very important for your acclimatization. Today we will hike (or cycle) up to 4000 m / 13,150 ft and return back to Horombo hut for a hot lunch and relax the rest of the day enjoying the magnificant views. Your body will be busy with acclimatization to the height. The trail is quite rocky, so most people prefer to hike and leave their bicycle at the hut. We recommend that, but want to give you the option. Those you like to mountain bike usually carry their bikes up and then ride down. - riding / hiking distance: 5 km / 3.1 miles - riding / hiking time: 2-3 hours - altitude gained: 280 m / 920 ft (up and down) - habitat: heather / moorland zone - meals included: breakfast, hot lunch, hot dinner

Horombo hut (3.720 m / 12,200 ft) to Kibo hut (4,700m / 15,430 ft)

We will start the day carrying our bicycles and hike with it because of some rocks. After a while you will continue cycling, the trail becomes flat and sandy, leads across the heath and then reaches the alpine desert with its vulcanic rocks and unforgetable views on Mount Mawenzi and Kibo. It will be quite windy, so you will need to be prepared and have your wind jacket. Today you will have some breaks for drinking and eating some energy bars, giving you energy to this challenging tour. The last bit up to Kibo Huts is going to be physically challenging, but going "pole pole" as we say (= slowly and steady) you will make it and be rewarded with a hot dinner at Kibo hut. You better go to bed early, as the exiting summit day lays ahead of you tomorrow.

- hiking / riding distance: 10 km /6 miles - hiking / riding time: 6-7 hours - altitude gained: 1,000 m / 3,200 ft - habitat: alpine desert zone - meals included: breakfast, hot lunch, hot dinner

Kibo hut (4,700m / 15,430 ft) to UHURU PEAK (5,895 m / 19,340 ft) to Horombo hut (3,720 m / 12,200 ft)

Summit day! We will wake you up around midnight for summit push. We usually hike to Uhuru Peak, but you can take your bike, our summit porters will help you carrying. We will aim to reach Gilman’s Point (5,756 meters /18,885 ft) by dawn, the first of three official summit points of Mount Kilimanjaro. Finally after following the edge of the crater, you will stand at Uhuru Peak, the highest point of Kibo. After taking memorable pictures and enjoying the precious moment on the roof top of Africa we will start descending. Below 5.000 m / 16,400 ft you can get on your bike as it is not as sandy anymore. Still you need to be very careful. Because you will need some energy to make it to the summit, we recommend to leave your bike at the hut or to hire an extra summit porter for that. From Kibu hut, where you will celebrate with our team and get a well deserved hot lunch, we will be cycling down to Horombo hut. - hiking / riding distance: 21 km / 13 miles - hiking /riding time: 8-12 hours - altitude gained: 1,200 m / 3,900 ft

- descent: 2,175 m / 7,135 ft

- habitat: arctic zone / alpine desert zone - meals included: breakfast, hot lunch, hot dinner

Horombo hut (3,720 m / 12,200 ft) to Marangu gate (1,840 m / 6,030 ft)

On your last day we will descent only downhill, so this will be an easy day for you. After breakfast we will be back from moorland to rain forest then to cultivation zone where Chagga people live. At the Main Gate you will have the chance to get your muddy boots cleaned, take pictures with your team, have a last hot lunch and receive your summit certificate from your guide. We will pick you up with our vehicle and drive you back to your hotel.

- biking distance: 18 km / 11 miles

- biking time: 5-7 hours

- descent: 1,880 m / 6,050 ft

- habitat: alpine desert, moorland, rainforest

- meals included: breakfast, lunch.

The 5 Days Kilimanjaro Biking Tour Itinerary

Cycling to the Uhuru Peak? If your goal is to reach the summit via the Kilema Route, you will meet your porters at Horombo and proceed to the summit. For those not interested in summiting, you will meet your porters at Londorosi Gate.

Day 1: Kilema Gate (1950m) – Horombo Hut (3705m)

Cycling time: Approximately 5 to 6 hours

Distance: Approximately 16 km

Habitat: Montane forest Horombo Hut (3705m) – Mandara Hut (2715m) Hiking time: 3 hours

Distance: Approximately 11.6 km

Habitat: Moorland

On the first day, meet your guide and transfer to the Marangu Gate, a journey taking about 45 minutes. The route passes through the charming village of Marangu, nestled on the lower slopes of the mountain. Upon reaching the park gate, all hikers must register at the Park office. After the necessary sign-in and registration at the Marangu Gate, we proceed to the Kilema Gate.

Upon arrival, double-check that you have all your daypack items, including drinking water, lunch pack, and extra clothing. Take a final check of your mountain bike before embarking on the initial 16 km route section from the Kilema Gate (1,950m) to the Horombo Hut (3,705m) on a well-maintained 4×4 track. Fit and skilled bikers, subject to road conditions, can cycle all the way to the Horombo Hut.

Remember, ascending too rapidly is a major cause of altitude sickness. Hence, we make regular stops to allow your body ample time to adjust to higher altitudes. Our aim is to reach the Horombo Hut around 15:00 pm. Here, you’ll leave your mountain bike for the night and descend on foot to the Mandara Hut (2,700m / distance 11.7 km) for overnight stay. Ensure your headlamps are in your daypack, as you can expect a late arrival at Mandara Hut. Dinner will be served around 20:00 pm.

The Mandara Hut comprises a collection of wooden A-framed huts set in a serene forest clearing. Each hut features 6-8 sleeping bunks with solar-generated lighting.

Day 2: Mandara Hut (2715m) – Horombo Hut (3705m)

Hiking time: 4 hours Distance: Approximately 11.6 km

Habitat: Moorland Horombo Hut (3705m) – Zebra Rocks (4040m) – Horombo Hut

Cycling time: 1 hour uphill and 20 minutes downhill

Distance: Approximately 2 km uphill and 2 km downhill

From the Mandara Hut, the trail meanders through a brief stretch of forest, skirts the base of the Maundi Crater, and emerges into the transition from rainforest to moorland. We’ll make a short detour for a scramble up the rim of the Maundi Crater, offering a breathtaking view of the majestic Kibo Crater on a clear day, showcasing its magnificent glaciers basking in the morning sun.

Once you enter the open moorland, you’ll be treated to the sight of Kilimanjaro’s remarkable plants, including the endemic giant lobelia, reaching heights of up to 3 meters, and the towering giant groundsel (Senecia Kilimanjari), which can grow up to 5 meters.

Arrive at the Horombo Hut in time for a late lunch. Afterward, collect your bikes and embark on a 1.5-hour acclimatization cycle up to Zebra Rocks (4040m) and back.

Enjoy a delicious dinner and spend the night at the Horombo Hut.

Day 3: Horombo Hut (3705m) – Kibo Hut (4703m)

Cycling time: 4 to 5 hours

Distance: Approximately 14 km

Habitat: Alpine desert

After a hearty breakfast at the Horombo Hut, it’s time to continue your Mount Kilimanjaro biking adventure. Prepare for a challenging day of cycling as you make your way to Kibo Hut, located at an elevation of 4,703 meters.

The trail from Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut is a steady uphill climb through the alpine desert habitat. As you pedal through this barren and rocky landscape, you’ll be amazed by the sheer grandeur of the surrounding mountains.

It’s important to pace yourself and listen to your body during this ascent. Our experienced guides will ensure that you have plenty of rest stops along the way to acclimatize to the increasing altitude. Remember to stay hydrated and fuel your body with snacks to maintain your energy levels.

Arriving at Kibo Hut in the afternoon, you’ll have some time to rest and prepare for the final push to the summit. Take this opportunity to relax, enjoy a nourishing meal, and get a good night’s sleep to maximize your chances of a successful summit attempt.

Day 4 – Summit Day: Kibo Hut (4703m) – Uhuru Peak (5895m) – Horombo Hut (3705m)

Cycling time: Approximately 1 hour uphill and 4 to 5 hours downhill

Distance: Approximately 9 km uphill and 23 km downhill

Habitat: Glacial zone, alpine desert, moorland

Today is the day you’ve been waiting for – the summit day! Wake up before midnight and prepare yourself for a challenging but incredibly rewarding experience. Put on your warmest layers, grab your headlamp, and start your ascent towards Uhuru Peak, the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro.

The cycling portion of today’s journey is limited to the early stages. The terrain becomes more challenging and steep as you approach the glacial zone. You may need to dismount your bike and continue on foot as you navigate the rocky and icy paths towards the summit.

As the sun begins to rise, painting the sky with vibrant hues, you’ll feel a surge of determination and excitement. Push yourself forward, one step at a time, until you reach the iconic Uhuru Peak. Standing at an impressive 5,895 meters above sea level, you’ll have conquered the highest peak in Africa.

Take a moment to savor this extraordinary achievement and capture memories with breathtaking photos. The panoramic views from the summit are simply awe-inspiring, with vast expanses of glaciers and the African continent stretching out before you.

After spending some time at the summit, it’s time to begin your descent. This is where the cycling adventure truly picks up. Get back on your bike and enjoy a thrilling downhill ride, taking in the stunning landscapes and the sense of accomplishment that comes with conquering Mount Kilimanjaro.

Return to Kibo Hut to collect your belongings and continue the descent to the Horombo Hut, where you’ll spend the night. The descent can be physically demanding on your knees and muscles, but the joy of the journey and the memories made will fuel your determination.

Day 5: Horombo Hut (3705m) – Marangu Gate (1860m)

Cycling time: Approximately 3 hours

Distance: Approximately 27 km

Habitat: Moorland, rainforest

On the final day of your Mount Kilimanjaro biking adventure, bid farewell to the Horombo Hut and embark on the last leg of your journey. The trail takes you through the moorland and lush rainforest, offering a stark contrast to the rugged terrain you’ve experienced higher up the mountain.

Enjoy the refreshing coolness of the forest shade as you cycle downhill, savoring the sights and sounds of the vibrant ecosystem surrounding you. Keep an eye out for wildlife, such as monkeys and various bird species, adding a touch of wilderness to your descent.

Arriving at the Marangu Gate, you’ll be greeted with a sense of accomplishment and fulfillment. Take a moment to reflect on your incredible journey and celebrate your achievement of cycling Mount Kilimanjaro.

Our team will be waiting for you at the gate to congratulate you on your successful expedition. After completing the necessary procedures at the park office, we’ll transfer you back to your accommodation, where you can relax, reminisce, and share your remarkable stories with fellow adventurers.

  • FAQ ON TREKS
  • EVACUATION ON TREKS
  • FULL MOON DATES

How much weight of equipment will I carry?

You are expected to carry your own day pack, with only things which should be able to sustain you until you reach the next camp at the end of the day. You do not need to carry your personal backpack/ duffel pack – It will be carried by our porters.

What if I am slower than the other trekkers?

No worries about that – this is a common concern. It is much better for your body if you proceed slowly and guides will permanently remind you about this (“pole-pole” – which means “slowly slowly”). By walking slowly, your body will much better acclimatize to high altitude. There is plenty of time allocated each day for the treks, even for those who like to go very slowly.

What if I cannot make it to the top?

Some climbers may fall short of reaching the summit, but not at the expense of their overall experience. Even for those who never reached the top, the experience of the wonders of Kilimanjaro is very rewarding. If one or more members of the group decide they cannot continue, or if a guide deems it unsafe for an individual (or a group) to continue, they are escorted to the most convenient campsite or Hut. Our guides intimately know the network of shortcuts to escort climbers to safety, and they are trained to act quickly and calmly under any circumstance.

What happens if someone in my group needs to descend?

We bring multiple guides on every climb so that when a climber needs to descend, it does not affect the rest of the party.

What is the accommodation like during trekking?

On the Marangu Route , there are simple basic Huts. The first 2 Huts sleep four people each and the last Hut is a dome-style with bunk beds. On all the other routes, you will sleep in 3 dome-style Tents, two people each. The Tents are modern and have an outer flysheet and large vestibules keep equipment from the elements. They are set up, broken down and carried- along with everything else- by our porters. There are public toilets set up at every campsite, but portable toilets are available upon request at the cost of $ 100 per group for the whole tour. Hot water is provided for each person every morning but no showers during trek. There will be dining tents with chairs and tables where all meals will be served. Before any meal, we will provide soap and hot water for washing your hands.

What is the food like on the mountain?

For each trek on the Mount a dedicated cook will be part of the logistical team. They are professional chefs and have the ability to prepare different kinds of dishes. Please see a sample page for Dietary Menu.

Evacuation on Mountain Treks

For those Hiking Mount Kilimanjaro and Mount Meru should be rest assured of their safety. Kilimanjaro National Park has a general rescue platform that matches providing the necessities required for ground first response to safety or hospital that is compulsory payable and inclusive on the package.

However, on our circular work basis, Bujo Tours uses Kilimanjaro Search and Rescue Helicopter service for evacuation. Just a point to note, Kilimanjaro Search and Rescue is not an insurance company and they don't provide any insurance policy but rather work with different insurance service providers to ease their rescue missions for their clients on Mt. Kilimanjaro and Meru in Tanzania.

Requirement for a Helicopter Evacuation

For a successful helicopter evacuation on Mount Kilimanjaro and Mount Meru, one should acquire a travel insurance that covers medical evacuation up to 6000 meters above sea level. For Safari goers any travel insurance is applicable.

Bujo tours recommends and request all Clients who have a confirmed booking to send in a copy of their insurance policy to our travel experts before arrival dates to Tanzania. It helps us incorporate all the confirmations smoothly for a quick and immediate response with our service providers and experts.

When the peak of Kilimanjaro and magnificent glaciers are lit up by the full moon, the view is absolutely stunning. For this reason it is getting big in demand to plan your climb of Kilimanjaro so that you summit around the time of full moon. However a practical reason of summiting on or soon after full moon helps illuminate the landscape without using headlamps, a bright moon along with a clear sky will improve your visibility throughout your climb, and most importantly, during the summit attempt. It is very beautiful, but certainly not necessary for summiting the mountain. To summit on a full moon, you will need to start a 6 day trek four days before the full moon or three days if doing a five day trek.

Everything you need to know about climbing Mount Kilimanjaro

To summit Kilimanjaro is an expedition of a lifetime. Whether you’re a seasoned mountaineer or a first-timer, there are key questions to consider before tackling the Tanzanian peak.

Zebras roam the flats near Mount Kilimanjaro

A sunrise ascent of Tanzania’s Mount Kilimanjaro while taking in panoramic views across the savanna is an unforgettable experience. Soaring upwards from the Tanzania-Kenya border, Kilimanjaro is Africa’s highest mountain at 19,340ft, one of the Seven Summits and the world’s highest standalone mountain. Also known as ‘the Roof of Africa’, the dormant volcano’s sheer scale combines with geological intrigue, natural beauty and a rich human history to attract 30,000-plus climbers annually.

In 1887, Chagga tribe member Yohani Lauwo led an expedition that saw Hans Meyer and Ludwig Purtscheller become the first Europeans to reach the summit. Lauwo lived to age 125 and became known as ‘The Old Man of Mount Kilimanjaro’. Today, his grandson Joshua Mlay follows in his footsteps as a guide for Intrepid Ventures. “I keep on practising my grandpa’s legacy, because every time I get up there I feel a sense of belonging,” he says.

The trek ascends through five climate zones — bushland, rainforest, heath, alpine desert and finally an icy arctic landscape. A range of wildlife roams the plains, including leopards and elephants, and you trek to a soundtrack of colobus monkey calls and tropical birdsong. At the summit, peer into craters and an ash pit fringed with the ice cliffs of a glacier.

What levels of fitness and climbing experience do I need?

Kilimanjaro is more of a long, high-altitude trek than a technical climb (you don’t need ropes, ice axes or crampons), so it’s suitable for people with no climbing skills. Having a basic level of fitness will make the experience more enjoyable rather than an arduous test of endurance.

If you’re capable of long walks, a few months of regular walks, runs or hikes will build strength and stamina in your legs — plus confidence in your ability. If you lack basic fitness, a longer period of preparation should get you in sufficient shape.

Joshua recommends consulting with your doctor if you have concerns about your fitness or ability to cope at altitude. “Kilimanjaro is doable, but you need to come with a positive mind and very positive vibes,” he says.

How do I choose a guide and tour operator?

Regulations state that climbers must ascend with a local guide. This means any expedition operator based outside of Tanzania will run its tours in collaboration with companies on the ground, contributing to the local economy.

With so many options, it’s important to do your research when considering expedition outfitters. “Make sure the tour operator is licensed by the Kilimanjaro National Park and registered with the Tanzania Association of Tour Operators,” Jon Gupta, of Mountain Expeditions, advises.

Don’t be tempted by the cheapest prices — these can indicate scrimping and saving by any combination of rushing the climb, using poor-quality equipment or forgoing critical items and/or paying unfair wages to porters and staff. Reading online reviews can help to gauge standards.

What are the travel, accommodation and catering logistics?

Numerous airlines fly to Kilimanjaro International Airport. The route you choose will determine your starting point, but many climbers make their way by minibus or taxi to Moshi or Arusha, gateway towns to Kilimanjaro National Park.

During the trek, you’ll sleep in huts or tents provided by the outfitter and carried by porters between camps. Cooks prepare carb-heavy, energy-rich and easily digestible meals, plus local delicacies such as mandazi (African doughnuts), all washed down with stomach-settling ginger tea.

Africa’s highest points are pointed out on mount kilimanjaro with wooden hand-painted signs

How much does a guided expedition cost?

A longer climb will be more expensive, but it’s important to weigh the risks of struggling at altitude or failing to summit on a rushed climb versus the extra money spent on taking it slow and increasing your chances of reaching the top.

The dry seasons are the optimum time to climb, running from January to March and from June to October. “These months offer the best chances of clear skies and dry conditions, which can make the climb easier and more enjoyable,” Jon says.

But don’t underestimate the temperature variation, both as you ascend and over the course of the day. At the base, temperatures can reach up to 30C, while at the summit, they can drop to as low as -20C at night. “The temperature drops by around 6C for every 1,000 metres of altitude gain,” he adds.

Which route should I climb?

There’s a network of seven official routes up Kilimanjaro, with some link-up combinations. “It’s difficult to pinpoint the best route for climbing Kilimanjaro as it depends on individual preferences and fitness levels,” Jon says.

Routes vary in length, steepness, popularity and scenic variety. Your tour operator can advise on which of their routes fit both your ability (for example, a more gradual climb) and expectations (the best views versus quieter paths). The Marangu route is the busiest. It’s the only route with huts and is easily accessible from Moshi with one of the shortest climbs. It can be done over five days, but the lack of time to acclimatise impacts its success rate and the descent retraces the ascent route, which limits views and causes two-way traffic.

A longer choice is the Machame route, enabling slower acclimatisation, while the even longer Lemosho is quieter and has the best views. Both have high success rates. The moderate, remote Rongai route is the only one to ascend from the north and offers good monkey-spotting opportunities. For experienced climbers, the Umbwe is the shortest and steepest.

How many days should I plan for my trip?

Most teams summit and descend in around five to nine days. The climb is best done in ‘pole pole’ style, meaning ‘slowly’ in Swahili. “Create your own rhythm and go at a consistent pace from day one so that by the time the steepness increases, you can handle it,” Joshua says.

Having more days in hand to climb maximises your chances of summiting. “You’ll have plenty of time to acclimatise plus the opportunity to climb higher and sleep low,” he explains. The descent is usually split over two days.

Additional activities in the area include visiting caves and waterfalls in the national park, touring banana and coffee plantations, or going on a safari.

What equipment do I need?

A good operator should provide you with a kit list and hire options. Since the routes pass through five climate zones, you’ll start in the humid rainforest and summit in a windy arctic landscape. Bring plenty of layers so you can stay warm and dry at each stage. Start with breathable base layers and build warmth with a fleece and insulated jacket. Pack waterproofs, too, and thermal layers for night-time. Other essentials include comfy shoes, a cap for protection, sunscreen and a warm hat and gloves.

Key equipment includes trekking poles, a head torch and an insulated sleeping bag. Also take a rucksack with at least a 30-litre capacity and an in-built hydration system. Pack luxury items to make your climb as comfortable as possible (snacks, eye mask, inflatable pillow, etc.)

What are the main risks?

Altitude sickness (AMS) is the main risk and is the leading cause of death on the mountain. At altitudes above 2,500 metres, the oxygen thins out, resulting in symptoms from headaches, dehydration, nausea and poor appetite to more serious and potentially fatal pulmonary or cerebral oedemas.

AMS can be mitigated by acclimatising properly, taking it slow, keeping hydrated and climbing with accredited, first-aid-trained guides who can spot symptoms developing and respond promptly with bottled oxygen, as well as descend with the casualty if necessary. Responsible operators will also perform daily heart rate and pulse oximeter checks.

The climb can also be tough psychologically, especially since high altitude impairs sleep quality. To keep spirits up, guides often teach the song Jambo Bwana, which means ‘hello, sir’ in Swahili. “It’s a motivational theme tune,” Joshua says.

What ethical considerations should I be aware of?

A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Kilimanjaro is sacred to the local Chagga people, revered as a source of life and fertility.

Respect the local people and environment. Check the sustainability credentials of tour operators. Follow the ‘leave no trace’ principle: don’t litter, use the camp toilets where possible and keep to marked paths. Single-use plastic is banned in the national park, so pack a reusable bottle or hydration system. Weigh-ins ensure that porters are not overloaded and rubbish is also weighed to deter littering.

Climate change is causing Kilimanjaro’s summit glacier to vanish. Deforestation has exacerbated its effects, leading to warm, dry air blowing up the slopes. In an effort to offset your carbon travel footprint, consider donating to a local tree-planting organisation to help cool the air through the evaporation processes and shade provided by forests.

At the summit, don’t touch the remaining ice cliffs. “Poor guides allow clients to climb the delicate, fragile glacier and it causes them to collapse,” Joshua says.
