Program description.

The BS in Hospitality, Travel and Tourism Management prepares students for management positions in one of the largest economic sectors worldwide. Combining a thorough liberal arts program of study with industry- specific business classes, students gain in-depth knowledge in the areas of hospitality finance, sales and marketing, revenue management, special event planning, destination development, and food and beverage operations. Students learn how to develop new hotel and resort concepts, market tourism destinations, and manage tourism and convention bureaus. Frequent site visits, industry events, and guest speakers ensure that students make use of all the opportunities New York City has to offer, both in and out of the classroom. In addition, they gain hands-on experience through internships, which develop them into successful—and highly employable—industry professionals.

Program Requirements

Concentrations.

The program requires the completion of 128 credits, and students may choose one of six concentrations listed below.

The BS in Hospitality, Travel and Tourism Management prepares students for a wide range of careers in hotels, restaurants, catering companies, real estate and management services companies, online travel agencies, marketing and PR firms, destination marketing organizations, event companies and consulting firms. The degree has six concentrations:

Event Management

This concentration explores career opportunities in festivals, weddings and social events, trade shows, and experiential marketing.

The event sector is growing fast, and offers a wealth of career opportunities. Whether you are interested in festivals, weddings, business conventions or sporting events, this concentration will equip you with the skills and knowledge you need to succeed in this exciting field.

Event planning, design and production are a central focus of this concentration. Event planners/producers coordinate every detail of the event: from the venue and speakers to arranging for printed materials and audio-visual equipment. They develop the concept for the event, and liaise with suppliers and staff. Event planners/producers may work for non-profit organizations, associations, hotels, corporations, and government. Many are independent business owners and coordinate events for a range of clients.

Events can also play an important role in a company’s marketing strategy. Experiential or event marketing is a promotional strategy that involves face-to-face contact between companies and their customers at special events like concerts, fairs, and sporting events. Brands use event marketing entertainment (like shows, contests, or parties) to reach consumers through direct hand-to-hand sampling or interactive displays.

Marketing and Analytics

In this concentration, students study hospitality and travel sales and marketing, as well as strategies and processes that optimize a business’s revenues.

The marketing and analytics concentration provides students with in-depth knowledge of the marketing functions of hospitality businesses.  Professionals in marketing and branding roles need strong analytical skills as they conduct market research, oversee multimedia advertising campaigns, and consult with outside agencies, promotional representatives and corporate executives.

Marketers and revenue managers currently evolve in an increasingly digital and data-driven environment. They are tasked to develop and implement strategies to maximize the business's revenues and profitability. On the basis of daily reports, they make predictions of demand and make distribution channels and pricing decisions. They also leverage the power of loyalty programs and optimize the entire guest acquisition phase; in partnership with travel agencies - on and offline - and other travel intermediaries.

Leadership and Management

This concentration focuses on the operational aspects of hospitality businesses – a great concentration for budding general managers!

The leadership and management concentration provides students with in-depth knowledge of the operational aspects of hospitality businesses. This is an attractive concentration for budding general managers, as the concentration includes aspects of sales and marketing, food and beverage management, but also leadership and law. Hotel operations roles are available in a wide range of departments: front desk, catering, events, housekeeping and human resources. Professionals in operations oversee the daily activities of their teams, and aim to ensure guest satisfaction.

Hotel Real Estate Finance and Development

This concentration provides students with in-depth knowledge of financial management and the hotel development process.

The hotel real estate finance and development concentration provides students with in-depth knowledge of financial management and the hotel development process. Hotel finance careers may include responsibilities such as overseeing the financial processes of the hotel, maintaining audits and reports, producing monthly income statements, and coordinating budgets and forecasts. The hospitality sector is mostly associated with the hotel industry, however, many other asset classes fall into this sector, including large scale resorts, spas, timeshares, restaurants and casinos.

Another aspect of this concentration is hotel development and asset management. Many well-known hotel brand names do not own the building in which the hotel operates, but rather contract their management and brand name to the owner for a fee. Owners and real estate investment trusts employ analysts to maximize the returns earned by the property. Hotel investment professionals produce valuations, and make recommendations about the development of new assets or the remodeling of existing assets.

Travel and Tourism Development

This concentration prepares students for careers in destination marketing organizations, (online) travel agents, tour operators, airlines, cruise lines, PR firms, and visitor attractions.

The travel and tourism industry has shown remarkable resilience in the face of economic challenges, geopolitical conditions and natural disasters. It remains one of the largest and fastest growing industry sectors in the world. Graduate tourism degrees prepare students for a wealth of careers in the public, private and voluntary sectors. WTTC estimates that the travel and tourism sectors support 292 million jobs worldwide, or 1 in every 10 jobs.

The travel and tourism development concentration prepares students for careers in destination marketing organizations, (online) travel agents, tour operators, airlines, cruise lines, event companies, development agencies, marketing and PR firms and visitor attractions. Students will explore various aspects of this large and multi-faceted sector, including casinos, special interest tourism products, sports tourism and mega-events, entrepreneurship and destination marketing.

Entrepreneurship

In this concentration, students will learn the different aspects of the typical entrepreneurship journey: from ideation, to prototyping,  to business launch, and management as applied to hospitality.

Entrepreneurship plays a crucial role in innovation, economic development and competitiveness. The entrepreneurship concentration provides students with in-depth knowledge of the crucial role that entrepreneurship plays in the travel and hospitality business. It also provides them with the entrepreneurial and innovative mindset sought after by many employers. The courses offer an overview of the different aspects of the typical entrepreneurship cycle, from ideation to business launch and management. Courses in this concentration are experiential,  applying theory to real world problems and opportunities.

Upon successful completion of the program, graduates will:

  • Comprehend the historical development of the industry, including its key global stakeholders, terminology and data/information sources.
  • Develop analytical and critical thinking skills, by understanding the selection of appropriate research methods and data, and the principles of analyzing data effectively to address industry challenges.
  • Develop the business skills and attributes required of contemporary, global hospitality and tourism professionals, to include the areas of management, service, leadership, communication, ethical responsibility, finance and technology.
  • Develop strong business writing skills, as well as engaging and effective presentation skills.
  • Develop a specialized focus on a specific area of study within hospitality and tourism.

BS in Hospitality, Travel and Tourism Management Curriculum

Degree/curriculum structure.

LIBERAL ARTS CORE: Jonathan M. Tisch Center of Hospitality undergraduate students have the benefit of taking NYU liberal arts core courses—the hallmark of an NYU education. These courses sharpen reading comprehension and writing skills, elevate creative and critical thinking capacities, and enhance social and cultural understanding.

PROFESSIONAL CORE: The BS in Hospitality, Travel and Tourism Management has a professional core that consists of 29 credits and a capstone of 3 credits, which offer a comprehensive business curriculum that connects what students learn in the classroom to the hospitality, travel, and tourism industries.

CONCENTRATIONS: The BS in Hospitality, Travel and Tourism Management offers concentrations in  Event Management , Hotel Real Estate Finance and Development , Marketing and Analytics , Leadership and Management , Travel and Tourism Development , and Entrepreneurship.

INTERNSHIPS: Tisch Center of Hospitality internships are an integral component of the BS in Hospitality, Travel and Tourism Management and provide students with the opportunity to build professional portfolios, to network, and to gain hands-on experience within a professional environment. Students who register for the internship course receive credit for the hours worked during that semester.

The core requirements include courses in the professional and liberal arts core. Students will decide the course sequence with their academic adviser, and are required to take two professional courses each semester.

Tourism Management, B.S.

The Bachelor of Science in Tourism Management degree is designed to prepare students for managerial and leadership roles in the tourism industry, including convention centers, tourism events, festivals, conferences, destination management organizations, and the travel industry. The mission of the School of Hospitality and Tourism Management is to educate global leaders for the hospitality and tourism industry through innovative and experiential curriculum, research, and community engagement.

The program provides a comprehensive curriculum that includes courses in general education, business, and tourism and hospitality management, combined with relevant operational management experience under the guidance and supervision of industry professionals, and program faculty.

The School of Hospitality and Tourism Management prepares students for responsible citizenship roles in business and society. It enables them to understand and apply the concepts of problem-solving in general, and in organizational and industry-related issues.

The faculty provide uncompromising individualized attention to meeting the educational needs of our students and assume very active, and influential roles in numerous professional organizations, at all levels.

Learning Outcomes

Students in the Tourism Management, B.S. program will be able to:

  • Identify and apply the knowledge and skills necessary for tourism operations.
  • Develop and integrate a core set of business skills necessary to successfully operate a tourism organization.
  • Demonstrate competence in the communication skills necessary for tourism management.
  • Formulate business decisions in tourism management.
  • Evaluate leadership principles necessary in the diverse and global tourism industry.

Entrance Requirements

The College of Hospitality, Retail, and Sport Management has a pre-professional and a professional division of student classification. All new students will begin in the pre-professional division. Progression into the professional division requires the approval of the department and the successful completion of the requirements indicated under each departmental heading.

In addition to the academic admission requirements of the University and of the College of Hospitality, Retail, and Sport Management for admission to the pre-professional division, an enrollment limit into the professional division may be imposed by various departments. Such a limit would become necessary if enrollment levels exceed available department staffing and facility resources. In the event of an enrollment limit, admission to a department may take into account the applicant’s grade point average and other factors which may include the applicant’s potential for success in that major.

Freshmen Students

In order to be admitted to a program of study in the College of Hospitality, Retail, and Sport Management, freshmen applicants must meet all University admission requirements through the Office of Undergraduate Admissions.

Transfer Students

In order to be admitted to a program of study in the College of Hospitality, Retail, and Sport Management, transfer applicants from outside of the USC system must meet all University admission requirements through the Office of Undergraduate Admissions and have at least a 2.50 GPA.

Students from other USC campuses who wish to enter the College of Hospitality, Retail, and Sport Management must fulfill one of the following requirements:

  • Be in good standing, meet all University admission requirements through the Office of Undergraduate Admissions, and have the cumulative GPA required for the program (see below).
  • Be in good standing and have completed 30 semester hours with the cumulative GPA required for the program (see below).

Required GPA for Change of Campus:  tourism management - 2.50; hospitality management - 2.50

Students enrolled in other colleges on the Columbia campus  must meet the following GPA requirements on all work taken: tourism management - 2.50; hospitality management - 2.50

Degree Requirements (120 hours)

Program of Study

Founding documents requirement.

All undergraduate students must take a 3-credit course or its equivalent with a passing grade in the subject areas of History, Political Science, or African American Studies that covers the founding documents including the United State Constitution, the Declaration of Independence, the Emancipation Proclamation and one or more documents that are foundational to the African American Freedom struggle, and a minimum of five essays from the Federalist papers.  This course may count as a requirement in any part of the program of study including the Carolina Core, the major, minor or cognate, or as a general elective.  Courses that meet this requirement are listed here .

GFL – Global Citizenship and Multicultural Understanding: Foreign Language  (0-6 hours)

College of HRSM students must demonstrate proficiency in a foreign language by achieving a score of 2 or higher on the foreign language placement test or by completing one foreign language course through 110 or 121.

Carolina Core Stand Alone or Overlay Eligible Requirements  — Overlay-approved courses offer students the option of meeting two Carolina Core components in a single course. A maximum of two overlays is allowed. The total Carolina Core credit hours must add up to a minimum of 31 hours. Some programs may have a higher number of minimum Carolina Core hours due to specified requirements.

2. College Requirements (21 hours)

A minimum grade of C is required in all college required courses

3. Program Requirements (8-20 hours)

Supporting courses (6 hours), minor (0-18 hours) optional.

  • Tourism Management majors may pursue a minor in any course of study offered by the College of HRSM as well as any other University program with an approved minor. College of HRSM required courses may not be counted toward a minor.

Electives (2-14 hours)

  • The Tourism Major Curriculum includes 2 to 14 hours of approved electives depending on how students fulfill the Carolina Core Requirements. Any course in the university can be used to satisfy the elective requirement including additional electives in the major.

4. Major Requirements (48 hours)

a minimum grade of C is required in all major courses

With on campus and online options, Hospitality and Tourism Management prepares students for a variety of management positions in the hotel, restaurant, meeting, travel, tourism, attractions, craft beverage, esports, and experience management fields. Students will complete required courses to gain a broad foundation in hospitality and tourism management as well as select elective courses to specialize in a segment of the industry.   • There are many networking opportunities with employers through guest speakers and student organizations (e.g., the Hospitality and Tourism Student Group). The Hospitality and Tourism Management program has partnerships with many local and global organizations including Proximity Hotel, O. Henry Hotel, Marriott Hotels, GIA restaurant, Guilford County Hotel Association, and the Piedmont Triad Destination Marketing Organization. Multiple alumni own local businesses or have key management roles in many local businesses.

  • Nearly 100 percent of our graduates are employed within six months, with 89 percent of them obtaining employment within three months of graduation.
  • Graduates have obtained employment at companies such as Marriott International, the Walt Disney Co., Darden Restaurants, Quaintance-Weaver Restaurants & Hotels, VisitNC, and the Greensboro Convention & Visitors Bureau. Potential career paths include hotel management, hotel sales, luxury resort management, casino operations, cruise ship and theme park management, tour guide, tourism destination management, concert promoter, festival coordinator, wedding planner, food and beverage manager, private club manager, restaurant or bakery owner, sommelier, winery tasting room manager, and wine and craft beverage manager.

RIT's hospitality and tourism management major includes a comprehensive core curriculum that provides you with a strong foundation in the core principles of hospitality, service management, and tourism operations. The hospitality management major gives you the opportunity to gain a wide set of skills which you can apply in any service industry. You may choose to specialize further though one of the hospitality minors:

  • Beverage Management Minor : Develop the knowledge needed to engage in beverage sales, marketing, and distribution as you taste worldwide beverages. Course work in this minor prepares you for careers in areas such as beverage sales, distribution, and management in both hotels and fine dining restaurants; procurement/purchasing management; bar, lounge, winery, or brewery owner/manager/entrepreneur; sommelier; cicerone; or beverage brand marketing manager and/or distributor.
  • Sports, Events, and Entertainment Management Minor : Delivery highly-effective experiences in the world of sports, events, and entertainment, and engage in careers as an sports/event venue sales manager; event manager for a hotel, sports venue, convention center, wedding venue, etc.; meeting planner for corporations, associations, or non-for-profit organizations; sports marketing manager; sports arena/facilities manager; private sports club manager; or sports analyst.
  • Real Estate in Hospitality Minor : From idea to opening day, you'll learn the tools and techniques to develop properties and make hospitality investment concepts real. You'll be well-prepared for a real estate career as a real estate associate, consultant, financial analyst, development analyst, brand analyst, asset manager, or brand manager.

We develop global professionals for global careers. The hospitality and tourism management major offers numerous opportunities for both short- and long-term study abroad. Additionally, our curriculum prepares you for the challenges of operating in a global industry by developing your knowledge of cross-cultural customer interactions, languages, and business practices of multinational corporations.

Global Hospitality Rotation

The  global hospitality rotation  is an immersive experience where you will gain a global perspective in business and commerce by studying international business on two continents:

  • RIT Croatia: You’ll spend the spring semester of your second year at  RIT Croatia , studying in Dubrovnik. Known as the “Pearl of the Adriatic,” Dubrovnik is a medieval seaside port on the Adriatic Sea. It is a popular European cruise ship port that boasts many cafes, winding cobblestone streets, and old city neighborhoods. It also served as a main filming location for HBO's hit drama Game of Thrones .
  • RIT: The majority of your course work will occur on RIT’s main campus in Rochester, N.Y. From its world-renowned attractions and historic museums to its phenomenal dining, world-class golf courses, and internationally recognized festivals, Rochester is a major metro city and a four-season adventure destination. 

Study Abroad Opportunities

The BS in hospitality and tourism management is also offered at RIT Croatia , one of RIT’s global campuses . What’s different about an RIT education? It’s the career experience you gain by completing  cooperative education and internships  with top companies in every single industry. You’ll earn more than a degree. You’ll gain real-world career experience that sets you apart. It’s exposure–early and often–to a variety of professional work environments, career paths, and industries. 

Co-ops take your knowledge and turn it into know-how. Business co-ops  provide hands-on experience that enables you to apply your knowledge of business, management, finance, accounting, and related fields in professional settings. You'll make valuable connections between course work and real-world applications as you build a network of professional contacts.

Students in the hospitality management degree are required to complete a combined 1,200 hours of practical cooperative education experience with classroom theory. In co-op placements, students work directly in the hospitality industry in a variety of positions and organizations. Co-op is usually completed in the summer following the freshman and sophomore years and during any semester in the junior and senior years, except the final semester of the senior year, when students are required to be in residence on campus. Co-op is planned, monitored, and evaluated by the student, the co-op counselor, the faculty adviser, and the employing firm.

  • Original Form 138 / SF9-SHS (Learner's Progress Report Card)

  • PSA-issued Birth Certificate
  • Original Copy of Certificate of Good Moral Character or Recommendation from the Dean/Program or Department Head
  • Medical Certificate of Chest X-ray results

Foreign Students with Scholastic Records from a Foreign School

  • Transcript of Records/Scholastic Records duly authenticated by the Philippine Foreign Service Post (PFSP) located in the student-applicant’s country of origin or legal residence

Description.

BACHELOR OF SCIENCE IN TOURISM MANAGEMENT  is a four-year degree program related to the fields of hospitality and tourism education. It provides students the opportunity to become directly involved in managing and planning the world’s biggest people industry – tourism.  This concentrates on courses such as history, travel, language, and other cultural aspects. It provides exposure and training of becoming experts in management of the travel, tour, and hospitality industry and will lead students to a journey toward a senior role in the exciting, diverse, and growing industry.

The BS Tourism Management program has two areas of specialization: (1) Major in Travel Operations and Service Management, and (2) Major in Recreation and Leisure Management.

The BACHELOR OF SCIENCE IN TOURISM MANAGEMENT Major in Travel Operations and Service Management program covers the study of various components focusing on the management, operations, and service delivery relevant to the travel and tourism industry. It encompasses technical, practical, and professional learning and application of skills with respect to specific areas such as travel agency management, tour arranging and planning, travel industry operations and procedures, tourism marketing and promotion strategies, travel counseling, travel industry law, international and domestic operations, and travel and tourism policy.

Apart from classroom learning and industry immersions, the college also has educational tour for the students. One of the most awaited highlights of being a Tourism Management student is the exciting domestic tours in Cebu, Bohol, Palawan and international tours in South Korea, Japan, China, Singapore, Malaysia, and Thailand.

AUR’s Bachelor of Science in Travel and Tourism Management prepares graduates for a range of fulfilling careers within one of the world’s largest and most diverse industries. Today, the tourism industry accounts for one in 11 jobs globally. Over the next ten years, the industry will grow at a rate of more than 4% per year. There are real opportunities within this sector for rewarding and exhilarating careers.

Why study travel and tourism management at aur.

There are few more appropriate and relevant places to earn a degree in tourism than in Rome, one of the world’s most important tourist destinations. Rome is often described as the world’s largest outdoor museum, and while this is certainly accurate, the city is anything but an artificial theme park. It is a vibrant, modern European capital that has retained its political and economic relevance in Europe for more than two thousand years.

The travel and tourism sector offers myriad career opportunities for those with business management skills. This expanding industry encompasses the marketing and service management of all forms of accommodation services, transportation for both leisure and business, cultural activities, and more. Field Studies

We prepare students for flexible career paths through a combination of theoretical and practical knowledge. Cultural and Heritage Tourism Cultural and Heritage Tourism is a leading sector in Italy, fueled by its immense wealth of artistic, archaeological and architectural treasure, thanks to which it is ranked first in the world for the number of UNESCO World Heritage sites it contains. Students interested in specializing in this area of the travel and tourism industry may concentrate their degree studies in Cultural and Heritage Tourism.

Food Tourism Italy is (rightly) renowned around the world for its cuisine. An increased tourist interest in local food traditions and the farm-to-table movement have driven an explosion in the food tourism business. Italy is the world’s top producer of wine, a leading producer of fine olive oil, parmesan, and prosciutto, to name just a few products that make it such a heavyweight in the global food market. Students interested in working for organizations involved in the production or promotion of Italy’s unique food traditions can take a concentration in Food Tourism.

AUR's Travel & Tourism Management program provides students with both industry-specialized skills and knowledge and overarching management & business training. Marshall entered academia after a 12-year career in finance in the U.S. and Europe, in investment banking and risk arbitrage with firms such as Donaldson, Lufkin & Jenrette Securities Corp and BNP Paribas. Marshall is also a Trained Group Counselor. Marshall Langer has been an Adjunct Professor at AUR since 2004.

An economics specialist, Professor Prota publishes regularly on issues related to the specificity of Southeast Asian market transition with a particular focus on place and path-dependent trajectories of development.   • There are 40 11-week courses in this program.
  • How many courses you take at a time will determine how long the overall program will be.
  • Strayer University credits are expressed in quarter hours.
  • One quarter hour of credit is granted for the successful completion of 10 contact hours per course.
  • The standard requirement for one course is for students to spend 10 to 14 hours in weekly work, including in- and out-of-classroom work, for a total of 135 hours by the end of the course. Strayer’s course design uses this requirement to meet applicable regulatory standards.

Program cost breakdown

In most cases, Strayer’s BBA program consists of 40 courses, with the price of $1525 per course. There are additional fees for textbooks and supplies, a $65 technology fee each term and a one-time $150 degree conferral fee.

Transfer credits

Courses from another institution may be eligible for transfer credits to Strayer, which can help reduce the number of courses you need to graduate and your overall tuition. You can transfer up to four classes toward your bachelor’s degree (if approved). The Strayer transfer credit page  has more information, as well as a tool to estimate how many transfer credits you may be able to apply to your Strayer degree program.

Scholarships and financial aid

There are a number of financial aid options worth exploring on our financial aid page. To apply for federal aid, prospective students should fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form. Stafford loans are available for graduate study. These are direct unsubsidized loans, not based on financial need. Unlike subsidized loans, Stafford loan interest will accrue while in the program. Making interest payments while in school will help reduce the amount of principal that would otherwise build up, reducing your end cost.

There are also scholarships and private loans available for Strayer students.

More than 500 organizations – including corporations and community colleges – invest in their employees by partnering with Strayer University to offer access to discounted education programs. If your employer is a Corporate Alliance Partner, you may qualify for programs that can help you discover career pathways in your field.

Nonfederal loans can help pay the difference between the cost of attendance and the total of loans and grants received from other tuition assistance programs.

Military tuition assistance

What is a minor in college?

A minor is a group of five courses in a select subject area that can add depth to your resume and round out your degree. Pursuing a minor offers you the opportunity to gain knowledge and skills in a secondary area of interest outside of your major and concentration.

Since you can use elective courses to complete a minor, in some cases you may not have to spend extra time or money on additional courses to complete your degree. Keep in mind that courses used to complete your major can’t be applied toward a minor.

Hospitality and tourism management concentration course list

Receive an overview of the hospitality industry, its career opportunities, an international perspective on the travel and tourism industry, and a comprehensive look at each department in the food service, lodging and travel industries. Explore basic management theories within the context of the industry.

Study product selection, purchase and storage of hospitality supplies. Learn to survey purveyors, write specifications, place orders, evaluate quality vs. cost and maintain purchasing records. Access a wide range of knowledge and specific solutions needed to keep costs low and margins high. Apply technology to cost control and employ manager-developed Excel spreadsheets and web sites. Examine uniform systems of accounting for restaurants; menu analysis; and cost/volume/profit analysis menu pricing and strategy.

Study hospitality and hotel management and front office management systems by detailing the flow of operational procedures for the total hotel organization. Examine the various elements of effective front office management, paying particular attention to the planning and evaluation of front office operations, human resources management, and guest services. Topics include interdepartmental communications, computer applications, managerial reporting and a review of the current and future trends in technology. Interpret statistical analyses in areas of price structure, occupancy patterns, and income to improve decision making and implement policy and procedure.

Review the development and operation of food service facilities of varying operational segments. Focus on concept development, menu management, human resource management, legal issues in the industry, managerial accounting management of internal operations and marketing initiatives. Get exposure to the various food service segments within the industry. Understand food service operations and management.

The Hospitality and Tourism Management concentration explores the roles and responsibilities of talent working in the hospitality industry. Students will learn to manage, communicate and analyze systems and processes to control cost and quality in the hospitality industry.

In addition, students who complete this concentration will be prepared to:

  • Answer questions about hotel rules and services, and address any problems or concerns guests may have.
  • Coordinate hotel operations with other managers.
  • Identify problem areas within the operations and construct and execute plans to improve guest relations.
  • Manage customer relations and cultivate repeat business.
  • Monitor the hotel or facility’s financial transactions and income.
  • Set room rates, create budgets and distribute funds to different departments.

Program overview.

The Bachelor of Science in Tourism Management is a four-year degree program for people who want to have a career in the field of Tourism and Event Management. This course leads to expertise in the management of tour-operating agencies, as well as other jobs in the tourism and hospitality sector. The curriculum also includes operational competencies, event management classes, investment, and market study. 

Recommended Senior High School Strand

Students who want to pursue a degree in Tourism Management are encouraged to take the Home Economics strand under the Technical-Vocational and Livelihood (TVL) track. The strand covers interesting topics like beauty and wellness, cooking, fashion designing, tourism, hospitality, and handicrafts. These topics are helpful to incoming college students as it teaches the basics of their degree program.

Admission Requirements

Qualifications

  • The student must be a high school graduate. 

However, if they were not able to graduate high school, they may opt to take the Alternative Learning System (ALS) and pass the Philippine Educational Placement Test (PEPT) to qualify for college; the availability of courses for PEPT passers depend on the university.

  • The students must pass the College Admissions Test of the university.

Program Outcome

Graduates of BS in Tourism Management  are expected to be able to:

  • Knowledgeable of the tourism industry
  • Awareness of the products and services produced by the local tourism industry
  • Apply laws and regulations related to the tourism industry
  • Utilize technology applications for tourism
  • Perform human capital development functions of a tourism-oriented organization
  • Properly communicate with clients and guest

On-The-Job Training/Internship

During the fourth year of the program, students are required to attend an On the Job Training (OJT) in travel agencies, travel ticketing offices, event organizing companies, and the Department of Tourism.

Students are given the opportunity to apply their knowledge and skills in an actual work setting. Usually, universities require them to submit a written report on their tasks, learning experiences, and hours rendered. Their work performance will also be evaluated by their immediate managers and will be submitted to their respective OJT coordinator. The number of hours required may differ in each university.

The BS in Tourism Management does not have a board examination. However, graduates may opt to take the Civil Service Examination (CSE) conducted by the Philippine Civil Service Commission (PCSC) to qualify in working in government offices. Some graduates opt to take a Master’s degree followed by a Doctorate degree to gain expertise in the industry.

Inaugural Class Graduates from BSc Program in Diving Safety Management

VALLETTA, MALTA  – January 23, 2024 –  Last month, three years after its launch, the pioneering Bachelor of Science in Diving Safety Management program at the Institute of Tourism Studies in Malta proudly presented its inaugural graduates. This academic program, the first of its kind globally, is tailored to diving professionals, aiming to elevate standards in the diving industry. The curriculum focuses on dive safety, medical research, and the sustainable management of both economic and environmental aspects of diving operations.

“I started the journey to create this program six years ago with many hopes but also many uncertainties,” said DAN Europe President and CEO Alessandro Marroni. “It is particularly gratifying to witness how the science of diving safety has now gained academic dignity. Congratulations to the students, Audrey Farrugia, Paul Tickle, Ray Arce, and Tiit Krutob. Their dedication, passion, and commitment will undoubtedly make a significant impact on the future of diving safety.”

The program was designed to equip students with a comprehensive understanding of diving safety, management, and scientific diving. Lectures are held at the Institute of Tourism Studies campus in Qala, Gozo, providing students with access to diving opportunities at spectacular local sites in the Maltese archipelago. 

“We’re very proud of the class of 2023 and have no doubt they will make meaningful contributions to our industry,” said DAN President and CEO Bill Ziefle. “We believe in this program and are glad to support it. Its graduates will help promote a culture of safety in diving for decades to come.”

The Diving Safety Management program is promoted by the International School of Diving Safety and Medicine, a joint effort of DAN Europe and the Institute of Tourism Studies, in collaboration with Divers Alert Network, DAN Southern Africa, PADI, and Professional Diving Schools Association Malta, under the supervision of Malta’s Ministry for Tourism, Ministry for Education, and Ministry for Gozo. The faculty includes members of the European Committee for Hyperbaric Medicine, the European College of Baromedicine, Università Politecnica delle Marche, University of Stellenbosch, and Northwest University.
