You won’t struggle to find somewhere to buy fruits and vegetables in Mumbai. It doesn’t take long to realise that, and sometimes the city can resemble a sprawling collection of markets with people and buildings sitting between the gaps. That isn’t entirely true, but Mumbai has a way of making it feel like the world exists within the place you find yourself, whether thats the parks, the bars , the restaurants or the museums .

But the markets, wow. Even if you’re not in the market for fresh produce, exploring the best markets in Mumbai is an experience all in itself. Each neighbourhood in the city has a government-appointed area for such things, interspersed with cupcake moulds, antique gewgaws, wedding bangles and who knows what else. You never know what you might find at the market here.

1.  Crawford Market

Since 1869, this Gothic structure has lent stately grace to stalls selling everything you could possibly need from paper cups to puppies. It’s one of Mumbai’s oldest covered markets and it was the first building in the country to get electric lighting. Though the name was officially changed to Jyotiba Phule Mandai after independence, everyone still calls it Crawford Market. It’s closed on Sundays but, on other days, this is the best place to get fruits, nuts and vegetables at wholesale rates.

2.  Hill Road

Hill Road in Bandra is where everyone goes shopping for clothes that aren’t really meant to last, the kind you wear for a season and then replace. T-shirts, dresses, pyjamas and shoes are found within the shops and displayed on the pavement (you read that right). After marvelling at the cheap prices, check out the old-timey bakeries in the area and the old arcade, Elco, now more famous for its delectable street food offerings.

3.  Chor Bazaar

Chor Bazaar or the Thieves’ Market is really a flea market in a different guise. Saturday to Thursday, it’s a hunting ground for antiques and discards. It’s a great place to look for Bollywood posters and gadgets—gramophone player, anyone?—as well as clocks, ceramic door knobs and tiles. You could decorate a whole bedsit from these shops. Though they may not be thieves, the shopkeepers will definitely try to fleece you, so halve their asking price and haggle hard.

4.  Pali Naka

Bandra’s Pali Naka is a hipster’s heaven. While part of this area is home to regular neighbourhood stores like a pharmacy and a pet shop, this is also where you can find Hass avocados and Brussels sprouts as well as miso paste and artisanal cheese—all at a hefty price. If the crépe place and the organic café have yet to convince you that it is mostly expats that live here, the fact that the vegetable vendors all speak English should do it.

5.  Ninety Feet Road, Dharavi

Not really a market, more a long street lined with shops that retail leather, this is the place for cheap boots and bags. Until 1996, the slum of Dharavi, which sprawls on either side, used to house all the leather tanneries. These have moved, but the traders still live and work here, selling not just shoes that can be made to order in two days, but also designer handbags and wallets leftover from big fashion house orders.

6.  Matunga East

Matunga Market on the east side of the train tracks is where a large segment of Mumbai’s South Indian community resides. Temples abound near shops selling flowers ideal as religious offerings, silk sarees, heaps of high-calorie munchies like plantain and jackfruit chips, and filter coffee powder, ground to your specification. When you’re finished, pop into one of the many Udupi joints—snack bars serving food like dosa and idli from the Udupi region—for a quick bite.

7.  The Lanes of Kalbadevi

Although this isn’t technically a single market, each lane in the area facing Crawford Market specializes in certain goods. Baking supplies? There’s a street for that. Curtains and other furnishings? Yup, turn left. Lights, lamps, lanterns for indoor or outdoor spaces? Check out that entire lane. Stationery, kitchen appliances, home décor, artificial plants and flowers, handbags and even plumbing supplies are found in dedicated areas, also known as gullie . The mere browsing is delightful.

8.  Dadar Flower Market

You’ll have to wake up early to smell the flowers, as everything is over by about 9am. Along the flyover, you’ll notice flower sellers from across the city come and pick up their day’s stock from the wholesalers: orange gerbera daisies and purple orchids mingle with gladioli and tuberoses. When you’re done taking photos, move to the covered shed where cut flowers—mostly roses and marigolds—are sold for temple and prayer offerings. The entire area smells and looks amazing.

9.  Ganesh Galli in Lalbaug

This is a seasonal market, but it’s like nothing you’ve ever seen. Between July and late September, it is home to makeshift workshops where sculptors come from different parts of the state to craft idols of the elephant-headed god, Ganesh, for the Ganpati festival at the end of the monsoon. There are statues of every size, from a few inches to five feet tall, and the detailing on each is exquisitely unique.

10.  Mangaldas Market

Also in the Crawford Market area, this covered bazaar only sells fabrics. Within these labyrinthine lanes, you’ll find any type of cloth: linen for trousers, cotton for dress shirts, silk and chiffon for Indian outfits, and even block prints and handloom textiles from different parts of the country. The different swathes on display are dazzling and distracting, so hold on to your wallet and watch your step. Prices are mostly fixed and most merchants only accept cash.

11.  Zaveri Bazaar

Indians love gold and there are even special days considered auspicious for buying it. If you’d like to partake in the gold rush, head to Zaveri Bazaar, where more than 60 percent of India’s gold is traded. Monday to Saturday, you can see thousands of goldsmiths and silversmiths making and selling jewellery, mostly in traditional designs and patterns, as well as toys, dinnerware and even money clips boasting different metals.

12.  Sassoon Dock Local Fish Market

Even if you don’t want to buy fish, this fish market on the western coast of South Mumbai is undeniably picturesque. About 1,500 boats bring in something like 20 tonnes of fish starting at 5am every day. Fish shopping is the great leveller: here you find not only housewives but also restaurant chefs vying for good prices on the daily catch. It’s loud, it’s dirty and it’s super stinky—but the vivid colours and vibrant energy alone are worth the trip.

13.  Santacruz Market

For all things bling, Santacruz market, on the west side of the railway station, is your one-stop destination. Actually known as the hub of wedding shopping for both men and women, the market sells clothing that can also be dyed to match a theme or turned into something completely different. Shoes and sandals, imitation jewellery, invitation cards and decorations are also sold here, in addition to everyday necessities like vegetables and fruits.

14.  Colaba Causeway

Colaba Causeway is Mumbai’s biggest tourist trap but it is also so much fun. By late morning, vendors set up makeshift stalls to hawk branded clothes, fake antiques, knick-knacks and jewellery you’ll be tempted to buy. Bargain for a good price and refuel at the cafés and bars along the way. Across Regal Cinema are a few stalls selling open-toed leather sandals, which are hard to find elsewhere.

15.  Lamington Road

India’s film and advertising industry are headquartered in Mumbai and much of the audio and visual equipment used in Bollywood films and TV advertisements originate right here in Lamington Road. Though Fort is the area for camera repairs, for other electronics like microphones, laptops, lights and speakers, the solution is found somewhere in this warren of stores. If you don’t know where to go, just ask: someone will happily help you find the right dealer or repair person.

The temple is built in the classic ancient Hindu temple style. It has one high spire, with a red flag flying on its top. And the walls are etched with religious mantras and shlokas prominent in the Hindu temples.

During festivals like Navratri, it is decorated with flowers and lights, and the celebrations go on for 10 days. People come from many places to be a part of the religious ceremonies and enjoy the ongoing fair.

19. Flora Fountain

Flora Fountain is one of the tourist places within Churchgate. It stands at the same place where the destroyed ChurchGate of Mumbai used to be.

The fountain was designed by R. Norman Shaw, and it has a mix of Neo-Gothic and Indo-Saracenic styles. It was built in 1864, by Engineer James Forsythe.

This Portland stone structure has fine carvings and sculptures. Its four corners are decorated with different statues. And the water basin below has stone fish figures and lion heads.

A magnificent 7 feet high statue of Roman Goddess Flora adorns the fountain top. And you can enjoy a spectacular view of Flora Fountain in the evening; when it's illuminated by lights.

20. Jehangir Art Gallery

Jehangir Art Gallery has played a prominent role in the evolution of contemporary Indian art. It was established in 1952 with the help of Sir Cowasji Jehangir’s donations. And since then, this art gallery has hosted numerous exhibitions for painters, sculptors, and other artists.

But it’s more than a venue for art exhibitions. Jehangir Art Gallery conducts workshops and other art programmes. And it’s a must-visit place for aspiring artists and art connoisseurs.

Jehangir Art Gallery is in the Kala Ghoda area, the art district of Mumbai. And this area has several other art galleries and designer boutiques with some of the finest arts in the city.

21. Rajabai Clock Tower

Rajabai Clock Tower is an 85-metre tall tower in the Fort Campus of the University of Mumbai. Premchand Roychand, a businessman and a stockbroker, financed its construction. And Sir George Gilbert Scott designed it.

The tower resembles London’s Big Ben, and it is among the tallest structures in the area. It chimes every fifteen minutes. The construction began in 1869, and it was completed by 1878.

The access to the inside of the tower is closed to visitors, but you can admire the architecture and detailed stonework from outside. The tower has one of the best stained-glass works in the city. And the architecture is a blend of Venetian-Gothic style. The tower also has 24 small statues, portraying the life of common people during British rule.

22. Bombay High Court

Bombay High Court is one of the oldest High Courts in India, and it’s a UNESCO-recognised site . It was built in the 19th century, in the grand Gothic Revival architectural style. And you'll find traces of Victorian style too.

Here, you can click photographs of this heritage building and visit the museum within the premises. The museum of Bombay High Court provides plenty of information about the Indian judicial system and Indo-British legal history. It has preserved many historical documents too.

And while you're here, you can also be a part of the ongoing hearings. The court looks after the events in Maharashtra and Goa. And two Union Territories – Daman and Diu, and Dadra and Nagar Haveli, also fall under the jurisdiction of this court.

23. Raj Bhavan

Raj Bhavan is the official residence of the Governor of Maharashtra. And you can visit it during your Mumbai tour.

It has lush green lawns, conserved forest areas and heritage buildings in the complex. The place is spread over an area of around 50 acres in the picturesque Malabar Hill, and the sea surrounds it on three sides.

The buildings are built in varied architectural styles: from British colonial style to Maratha style and modern Indian style of architecture. And the complex also has a British-era bunker, which has been turned into a museum.

During your tour, you can watch the sun rising over the sea. And you might also be able to enjoy a cup of tea with the Governor.

24. ISKCON Temple

ISKCON Temple is a magnificent Hindu temple near Juhu Beach. It’s a revered temple, especially among the devotees of Lord Krishna. But it also houses idols of Radha, Lord Rama, and Sita among others.

The temple is also known as Radha Rasabihari Temple and Hare Rama Hare Krishna Temple. And it’s an ideal place to pray, meditate and gain knowledge. The temple offers various lessons ranging from Vedic education to meditation and spirituality.

Apart from the main temple, you'll also find a restaurant, a library and a guesthouse here.

Thousands of devotees visit ISKCON temple throughout the year. And the grand celebrations during Janmashtami, Jagannath Rath Yatra, Radhastami and many other festivals are worth the experience.

25. Mount Mary Church

Mount Mary Church, or Basilica of Our Lady of the Mount, is among the beautiful churches in Mumbai. It is dedicated to Virgin Mary and it has been built in the Gothic architectural style. And the walls are covered with colourful fibreglass murals depicting stories from the life of Mother Mary.

The peaceful environment and the view from the church also attract many people to spend time here. The church stands on a hillock overlooking the Arabian Sea. And from the backyard, you get a view of the spectacular Mumbai skyline.

Mount Mary Church is also famous for the annual Bandra Fair. It is celebrated in September on the birthday of Mother Mary. The church holds a feast on the day, and the area surrounding it experiences a week-long carnival-like celebration.

26. Fort Bassein (Vasai Fort)

Fort Bassein (or Vasai Fort) is a 500-year old Portuguese fort near Vasai-Virar. And it is among the most popular places to visit in Mumbai outskirts.

At its prime, Fort Bassein was a complete city. It had administrative blocks, churches, hospitals, and the Portuguese used it as their base to control the region. The fort also used to be the official residence of the Portuguese governor when he was here.

Today, the fort is in ruins, but it is a part of the heritage tour of the area. The watchtowers allow you to observe the surrounding Vasai village and the extended skyline of Mumbai. And the fort is also a popular spot for movie shoots and pre-wedding photoshoots.

27. Kanheri Caves

Kanheri Caves are a collection of 109 Buddhist caves. These caves used to be a Buddhist monastery, and they’ve been built over a long period. The earliest caves are from the 1st century BCE, while the most recent ones are from the 11th century CE.

Paintings and stone sculptures adorn the walls of the caves. Statues of Buddha in various postures and sizes are in the caves. And you'll also find numerous inscriptions in Brahmi and Devanagari, and some epigraphs in Pahlavi, on the walls.

These caves served as a place for worship, study and meditation. Cave 3 is the largest among the Kanheri Caves, and the most remarkable.

This serene cave complex is situated on a hillside, and it takes a long trek through lush green bushes and rocks to reach here. This site has numerous small streams and waterfalls too. And it also offers a view of the sprawling Mumbai city.

28. Global Vipassana Pagoda

Global Vipassana Pagoda is a meditation dome on the outskirts of Mumbai. The dome is built as a tribute to a Vipassana teacher – Sayagyi U Ba Khin, and it resembles the Shwedagon Pagoda of Myanmar.

The dome of the pagoda is the world’s largest stone dome standing without any supporting pillars. And 8000 people can meditate at a time here.

The architectural pagoda and the intricately carved gates are among the major points of tourist interests. But there also are other structures like the 21.5 feet high statue of Gautam Buddha, the Bell Tower and the Gong Tower. The pagoda complex also has a park, a small waterfall and a replica of the Ashoka Pillar of Sarnath.

Global Vipassana Pagoda spreads the values of Gautam Buddha through its meditation and relaxation sessions. And you can also take meditation courses. The campus has a library and a museum too.

29. Essel World

Essel World is an amusement park, only a few metres from Global Vipassana Pagoda. It’s a popular getaway for relaxation for local people, and it is also among the famous amusement parks in India.

This amusement park has got over 50 amusement rides, adventure activities and fun points to check. There are different rides for adults and kids. And you'll find group rides too. Apart from the rides, you can enjoy in the bowling alley, ice-skating rink, discotheque and many other places.

Essel World has numerous food courts serving a variety of cuisines. And it also has a small merchandise shop. And while you're at Essel World, visit Water Kingdom too.

30. Water Kingdom

Water Kingdom is a water-themed amusement park right next to Essel World. It has various wet adventure rides, fun-filled water slides and numerous pools to play together. And many people visit Essel World and Water Kingdom together.

This park also has a large wave pool and over 30 water activities, including a rain dance floor.

And if you aren’t interested in the water games, you can relax beside the pools with some cold drinks and snacks. Water Kingdom has a couple of restaurants and snacks parlours serving a variety of delicacies.

Apart from those fun rides and water slides, a fish spa and pedicure zone are also here.

31. Powai Lake

Powai Lake is an artificial lake known for its charming evenings. The lake is surrounded by trees and bushes, and you will find many birds like kingfishers, herons and falcons. Bees and various colourful butterflies can also be seen near Powai Lake.

And the lake also has many fishes and a few crocodiles.

People come to Powai Lake to spend their evenings after work. A small play area is also near the lake. You can buy some local snacks and munch at them while admiring the golden hues of the sky and the setting sun.

And while you're here, you can also check out the Nirvana Park across the road in the Hiranandani complex. It is a beautiful garden furnished with wooden walkways, kids’ slides and benches. You'll also find grass lawns, ponds and tiny flowers around this park.

32. Nehru Science Centre

Nehru Science Centre is the largest interactive science centre in India.

It was opened to the public in 1985, and it has around 500 varieties of exhibits and interactive science games. This science centre also has a museum showcasing various models to tell you about the developments in science and technology. And it has a library too, with scientific books and movies.

The science centre offers practical experience with laws of physics, human anatomy, and many other facets of science. The available activities also include regular shows, films, and documentaries.

A sky observatory – Nehru Planetarium, is also within the complex. Multiple telescopes are available here for stargazing and studying planetary motions and Solar/Lunar eclipses.

33. Crawford Market

Crawford Market (officially named Mahatma Jyotiba Phule Mandai) is the largest market in the southern Mumbai. From gifts to groceries and from toys to pets, the market has everything. And it is the best place to visit in Mumbai for shopping.

During British rule, it was a source to buy daily fresh produce. And it’s still a popular place to get good deals on various household goods and fresh fruits and vegetables.

Crawford Market is known for its striking architecture too.

34. Dhobi Ghat

Dhobi Ghat is the world's largest open-air laundry. Here, hundreds of washermen and women – dhobis, work their shifts through the day to wash clothes. Porters bring dirty clothes from all over Mumbai and they take them back in their fresh, crisp and spotless state.

The system is well-optimised, and each cloth is coded to be traced back to the client.

This laundry was set up by an association of 50 washers in 1890. And today, around 700 washer families live here. And although some have installed washing and drying machines, most still carry on their work manually.

Dhobi Ghat has maintained much of its old charm and washing methods.

For me, the Eternal City is eternally fabulous. No matter how crowded it gets, how dysfunctional its current government is, or how many bad pizzas there are in ratio to good ones, Rome remains. It’s persisted and resisted for more than 2,775 years, and even at this ripe old age, Rome is still evolving. 

It’s an exciting time to visit Rome, and even for people who live there, the flurry of post-pandemic activity in the travel sector has been dizzying. “Archaeological sites that have been fenced-off for years are now accessible to visitors, there’s a host of innovative new tour options, and I can barely keep up with the number of absolutely stunning luxury hotels that have opened ,” says Travel + Leisure contributor and Rome resident Laura Itzkowitz, who also writes about Rome in her newsletter, The New Roman Times . “It’s a delight to see so much investment in the city and so many new ways to experience it.”

• Swoon over the cityscape. Few things are as romantic as Rome at night from a vantage point like the Fontana dell'Acqua Paola or the Capitoline Hill.
• See marble turn to flesh. At the Galleria Borghese, Bernini’s lifelike sculptures are a gazillion times more impressive than what you remember from art history class. 
• Do the Full Monty of Italian dining. Bring your appetite and go big, with antipasto, pasta, main course, and dessert at a homey trat like Da Enzo da 29.  
• Get up early. At least once during your stay, request an early wake-up call to discover a deserted city. ArcheoRoma can lead the way.

Basilica di San Clemente

For a real sense of how Rome’s history is layered like a lasagna, head to this church near the Colosseum — or rather, underneath it. An atmospheric archaeological area beneath the not-too-shabby 12th-century church holds an even earlier Christian church, which lies on top of a pagan altar and an ancient Roman apartment building.

Spend a late afternoon vintage shopping on my favorite street in Rome , then stick around for an aperitivo, followed by pizza and gelato. If that trifecta of Roman drinking and eating isn’t enough, this splendid street near Piazza Navona has a buzzy but manageable bar-hopping scene. 

Largo Argentina

Want to stand at the very site (or very near it, anyway) where Julius Caesar lost his life? Long visible only from street level and best known as a cat sanctuary among picturesque ruins, the archaeological area at Largo Argentina site is now open to the public, thanks to funding from Bulgari . The Curia of Pompeo, where Caesar got shivved, stands near the ruins of four ancient temples.

Galleria Borghese

Reserve your tickets in advance and prepare to be overwhelmed by the beauty here, both of the ornate salons of this noble palace turned art museum, and the amazing works inside, including Bernini’s spellbinding "Rape of Proserpine" and several Caravaggio paintings.

Testaccio Market

This sprawling covered market in the working-class Testaccio neighborhood offers an authentic slice of Roman daily life. Even if you’re not shopping for clothing, produce or fresh fish, stop for some of Rome’s best street food, especially a suppli at Food Box or a drippy panino at Modri e Vai. 

Itzkowitz is a fan of this artisan jeweler in Monti and even had owner Antonio design a pair of custom earrings for her wedding. If you don’t have time for a made-to-order bauble, the shop has many original designs, many of which feature colorful gemstones.

Essenzialmente Laura

For a real only-in-Rome gift or souvenir, Portuesi refers friends and clients to the perfumery of Laura Bosetti Tonatto, who’s made custom scents for celebrities, royals, and aristocrats, including Queen Elizabeth II. “You can create your own perfect perfume or find the scent you love,” he says. 

La Bottega del Marmoraro

It’s hard to imagine a store like this anywhere else — a tiny workshop on pretty Via Margutta where stone carver Sandro Fiorentino tinks away at marble plaques by hand. “I love to bring out-of-town visitors here,” says Itzkowitz. “Prices start at around 15 euros, which means you can find an affordable, handmade souvenir.”

Fontana dell'Acqua Paola

Some of the best things in Rome are free, including the views from this monumental fountain high on the Janiculum hill. It’s one of T+L’s top underrated things to do in Rome . Fans of the Oscar-winning film “Rome, the Great Beauty” will recognize this majestic spot.

This classy bar offers great cocktails and light bites with a sublime view. “A table there in the stunning Piazza di Pietra,” says Bono, “with the incredible Roman columns all lit up is truly magical, and it feels like it's just there for you."

Despite its near-legendary status and the long lines for a table (Enzo doesn’t take reservations), Itzkowitz says a meal here is “worth the wait and lives up to the hype — every time.” She’s a fan of the handmade tonarelli cacio e pepe but says that the food here is consistently good across the menu. 

Trattoria Da Cesare Al Pellegrino

This new-in-2023 sister property of a neighborhood favorite in residential Monteverde brings hearty, traditional Roman pasta and meat dishes to the centro storico. “Run, don't walk,” says Bono, “because this city location is super charming, and tourists haven't found it yet.”

Pro Loco Pinciano

Portuesi says you’ll feel like a local at this super-casual pizza and pasta joint just outside the city walls, where the emphasis is on ingredients and wines sourced from the surrounding region on Lazio. Charcuterie platters are delicious and abundant here. 

L'Antica Pesa

Regularly named one of the best restaurants in Rome, this Trastevere culinary landmark is, per Portuesi, “a standard and consistent classic” and worth crossing the river for. Head here for a special dinner or when you’re ready to go big (before going home, maybe?) and order an appetizer, pasta (primo), meat, and dessert for the full Italian dining experience.

You’ve heard all the warnings about visiting in high summer, but if that’s the only time you have to visit, Itzkowitz says to do as the Romans do: rest in your cool hotel room in the afternoon and venture out again in the early evening. Bono agrees that summer can be...sticky but adds, “Those summer sunsets on a rooftop with an Aperol spritz certainly make for that 'Dolce Vita moment' we all crave.”

Portuesi recommends November, as it’s still relatively warm and the crowds have thinned out; January, when sale season starts; or April and October. “Tourists might still be there, but the colors of spring and autumn are amazing, and temperatures are on the warm side.” I love visiting in January or February when the crowds are much more manageable, and if you’re lucky, you can catch some lovely, crisp, sunny days.

Most visitors fly into Rome’s Leonardo da Vinci/Fiumicino Airport (FCO). From there, you can take a 30-minute non-stop train to Termini, the central station, and take a taxi, Metro, bus, or tram to your accommodation. A cab from FCO to anywhere inside the Aurelian Walls costs 50 euros. Ride-sharing services other than Uber Black are not available in Rome. 

Rome’s historic center is primarily flat and highly walkable. Many visitors take the Metro to reach the Vatican Museums, then walk back into the city from there (or take a cab from St. Peter’s Square). 

Buses and Metro, both run by ATAC , are also reliable ways to get around, though depending on the distance, walking may be faster. Note that taxis in Rome cannot be hailed on the street. Instead, they wait at taxi stands or ranks generally located near tourist areas. 

I strongly recommend against renting a car in Rome, as traffic and parking are a mess and the centro is a maze of one-way streets, many of which are pedestrian-only. If you pick up a car in Rome for a more extended tour in Italy, make sure you have your route mapped out in advance — and nerves of steel.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – After an early-morning scene that was by turns surreal, frightening and tragic, Scottie Scheffler made it to work and did his job. He played golf.

The numbers, with their attendant circles and squares, added up to a second-round 66, leaving him in contention at the PGA Championship at rain-soaked Valhalla Golf Club.

But amid the pall of the day, Scheffler was among the first to preach perspective.

“First of all, my sympathies go out to the family of Mr. Mills,” Scheffler said after reaching 9-under par, two behind Collin Morikawa (65). “I can't imagine what they're going through this morning. My situation will get handled. It was a chaotic situation and a big misunderstanding.

“I feel like my head is still spinning,” he continued. “I can't really explain what happened this morning. I did spend some time stretching in a jail cell. That was a first for me.”

The narrative for Scheffler coming into the week was that he had won four of his last five tournaments, building huge leads in the Official World Golf Ranking and FedExCup. He is a new father, welcoming a son into the world with wife Meredith last week. He’s attempting to win his second straight major, becoming the first player to get halfway to the calendar-year Grand Slam since Jordan Spieth in 2015.

And yet all of that became secondary as events unfolded early Friday.

At 5 a.m. local time, a man whom the PGA of America said was “a worker with one of our vendors,” and who was later identified as John Mills, was fatally struck by a shuttle bus outside the club entrance. At around 6 a.m., with traffic at a standstill, Scheffler, trying to make his tee time, was arrested for reckless driving and disregarding the signals of an officer, whom the police report contends attached himself to Scheffler’s car and was dragged, suffering injuries.

Handcuffed, Scheffler was driven to jail and booked into a holding cell. He was issued an orange jumpsuit and watched his saga play out on a TV tuned to ESPN. He was discharged on his own recognizance and made his tee time, which had been pushed back 80 minutes due to the fatal accident and traffic backup on Shelbyville Road.

It was a feat of compartmentalization to find the composure to compete. After the round, he reiterated that it was a “chaotic situation” and “a misunderstanding” but praised the Louisville Metro Police Department and police everywhere for doing a hard, vital job.

“I was pretty rattled to say the least,” he said. “The officer that took me to the jail was very kind. He was great. We had a nice chat in the car, that kind of helped calm me down. I was sitting there waiting to kind of go in and I asked him, I was like, ‘Hey, excuse me, can you just come hang out with me for a few minutes so I can calm down?’ I was never angry. I was just in shock, and I think my body was just – I was shaking the whole time.”

Among the charges against him, the most serious is felony second-degree assault of a police officer. His lawyer has said he will be exonerated, and Scheffler said in a statement before his round that he was “proceeding as directed by police officers” but amid the chaos – it was dark and raining, with cars everywhere – there was a misunderstanding.

He also said his situation was secondary in importance to the tragic death of Mills.

Despite everything, he had plenty of time to warm up before the round and birdied his opening hole, the par-5 10th, as well as the par-4 12th to immediately settle into the round. He birdied the par-5 18th, as well.

Scheffler made three birdies and no bogeys on the front nine, his second nine of the day, and signed for a 66 that he will no doubt remember for the rest of his life. He said he was calmed, in part, by members of his team, including his parents, who gave him a hug upon his arrival at Valhalla; his agent; and his longtime coach, Randy Smith.

Doing what he loves, Scheffler added, also helped him calm down.

“I was shaking for like an hour,” he said. “It was definitely a new feeling for me. … The officers inside the jail were tremendous. A couple of them made some jokes I think when they figured out who I was and what happened and how I ended up there. …

"I mean, they were really kind. I'm grateful that we have such strong police, and they're our protectors out there, and like I said, we just got into a chaotic situation this morning. That's really all it was.”
