Visiting Korea in September

If you’ve planned your trip to South Korea for September, you’re in for a wonderful time! With golden light and comfortable weather, it’s easy to feel optimistic this month.

Whether it’s challenging yourself with a hike up Bukhansan, seeing the sights from the deck of a luxury yacht on the Han River , or scooting around Seoul on an e-bike, September is definitely a month to spend as much time outdoors as possible.

korea in september | hangang river sunset

Sunsets in Korea in September are simply glorious.

In Korea in September, kids are back in school, and the epic crowds seeking peak autumn foliage haven’t arrived yet. So booking tours and the ideal accommodation in Seoul is relatively easier, and more affordable than in October and November.

However, the Chuseok holiday falls from September 28th to 30th in 2023. At this time, everyone and their dog is traveling around Korea, so there are huge traffic jams and booking KTX tickets is very difficult. It’s best to stay put in Seoul during Chuseok.

You’ll have to wait until October or November to see this kind of fall foliage in Korea.

There’s also plenty to keep you entertained in South Korea in September, with some truly unique festivals and events set to take place in this first month of autumn. I’ll cover these a bit later on in this guide.

Korea in September | Weather

After the oppressiveness of summer in Korea, the September weather feels just a little bit like heaven. This is one of the best months to visit Korea climate-wise, with ideal temperatures, minimal humidity, and glorious sun-filled days.

korea in september | changdeokgung palace

The weather in Korea in September is ideal.

However, there’s an overall cooling trend in Korea during September, with daytime high temperatures decreasing 4°C | 8°F, from 27°C | 81°F to 23°C | 73°F over the course of the month.

It’s still hot enough across the country to be out in shorts and t-shirts for the first few weeks of September in Korea, but it’s wise to prepare a sweater or light jacket for evenings. Near the end of the month, it can feel downright chilly at night, with average lows of 17°C | 63°F.

Korea Weather in September Quick Guide

Korea in september | seoul weather.

With average temperatures ranging from 17°C | 63°F to a still warm 26°C | 78.°F, the Seoul weather in September is simply wonderful. It cools down as we head into Seoul’s incredible autumn season, but jeans and multiple layers are all that’s required for exploring comfortably this month.

korea in september | changdeokgung palace

You don’t need more than a light jacket and layers to explore Korea comfortably in September.

The humidity decreases quickly in Seoul in September, and by the end of the month, it sits at just 3%. There are about 9 days of rain, totalling approximately 170-mm, on average, but it’s not really anything to worry about.

korea in september | peaceland in pocheon

September in Korea is such an incredible relief.

*Personal note: Can we get a hallelujah!? I spend most of Korea’s July and August with AC on 24/7, hiding inside, and wearing black, because the sweat from all that humidity really isn’t pretty.

Last year, by the end of August – the weather changed dramatically over the course of the about 3 days. My AC was off, there’s little to no humidity, and it’s even a bit chilly in the evenings if there’s a breeze. Sunsets are glorious, the sky is crystal clear and the weather is literally perfection.

Korea Weather in September | Busan

With its location on Korea’s southeastern coast, Busan in September is cooler than Seoul. It has average daily temperatures ranging from 21°C | 70°F to 24°C | 76°F. It rains for approximately 9 days, but precipitation only totals about 70-mm over the entire month.

If you don’t mind a cooler sea, it’s still possible to swim at Busan’s beaches. The water temperature sits at 25°C | 77°F in September in Korea, and there’s plenty of sunshine to enjoy. Be sure to slather on that sunscreen though – the UV index is still very high.

SMALL GROUP AND PRIVATE TOURS  |  Major attractions like Taejongdae Cliff, Songdo Skywalk, Gamcheon Culture Village, and Haedong Yonggungsa Temple are spread out in several different areas of Busan. Make the most of your limited time with tailored small group or private tours. Check options here.

Korea Weather in September | Jeju Island

In September, average temperatures on Jeju Island range from 20°C | 69°F and 26°C | 78.4°F with 11 days of rain, totalling approximately 220-mm of precipitation.

You can still swim at gorgeous Gwakji Beach in September.

The water temperature is 25°C | 76°F, so you can still swim comfortably at one of Jeju’s gorgeous beaches.

GETTING AROUND JEJU ISLAND  |  Jeju is a surprisingly large island, and public transit can be slow and time-consuming. If you don’t have a ton of time, your best options are to  rent a car  and drive yourself, or join a group tour of major Jeju Island sites.

  • Eastern Jeju Discovery:  Horse riding, Seongeup Folk Village, Women Diver Show (Haenyeo Museum on rainy days), Seongsan Sunrise Peak + Manjang Cave
  • Western Island Exploration:  Hyeopjae Beach, Hallim Park, O’sulloc Green Tea Field, Sanbang Cruise + Cheonjeyeon Waterfall
  • Southern Jeju Adventure:  Mysterious Road, Hallasan, Alive Museum, Jusangjeolli Lava Cliff, Lonely Rock + Jeongbang falls
  • Jeju Island UNESCO Day Tour:  UNESCO sites like Manjang Cave, Seongsan Ilchubong Peak, and Hallasan

Korea Weather in September | Gangneung (Gangwon-do)

The Korea weather in September on East Coast beaches is typically quite a bit cooler than in the interior. In Gangneung in September, the average daily temperatures ranges from 16°C | 60°F to 21°C | 70.5°F. The sea temperature hovers around 22°C | 71.2°F – which makes for uncomfortable swimming, for most people.

korea in september | east coast

The East Coast of Korea can be chilly, even in summer.

In my experience. the East Coast can feel quite chilly even in summer time, so be prepared with some heavier weight clothing.

AFFORDABLE TAXI TOUR OF GANGNEUNG  | This 3 hour private taxi tour of Gangneung area sites provides incredible value at just 37,500 won per car (max 4 people). See famous sites like the BTS bus stop, Anmok Beach Coffee Street, Gyeongpo Lake, or Ohjukheon at your own pace.

Looking for other fun things to do in the Gangneung area? Check day and all-inclusive tour options here.

Korea in September | Typhoons

Typhoon season in South Korea is from July to September. At this time a few year ago, Typhoon Hinnamnor was barreling towards Jeju Island. It was at Korea’s highest typhoon rating, with a maximum wind speed of 55-m per second – strong enough to collapse a building.

typhoons in korea | Maemiseong with rocky beach and sea in front

Maemiseong Fortress was built to protect the land, after Typhoon Maemi hit Korea (the last super strong typhoon).

If a typhoon should hit while you’re visiting Korea in September, it’s best to stay indoors, shut the windows tight and avoid places where there could be flooding or mudslides… and maybe avoid Jeju Island.

Limited Edition Autumn Tours in Korea

These autumn tours in Korea only take place for a few months each year, and they get booked up fast, because space and timing for them is limited. If you’ve got your heart set on seeing any of these places during autumn in Korea , I recommend reserving a spot as soon as you can.

September in Korea | What to Wear

September in Korea is a shoulder month between summer and autumn. The weather can change quickly from hot to windy and cool this month, so it’s best to be prepared with multiple layers and weights of clothing to deal with the changing conditions.

korea in september | what to wear

By the end of September in Korea, you’ll want long sleeves and pants.

At the beginning of the month, temperatures are still relatively high, the sun is strong, and there’s some possibility of rain. I’m comfortable in shorts and t-shirts, even in the evenings, but I run pretty hot. Most locals are wearing jeans, leggings, skirts, long-sleeved shirts, and lighter weight sweaters, jackets, and windbreakers by the start of September in Korea.

By the end of the month (or even earlier), it’s cooled down enough that shorts and sandals would feel strange. Travellers from tropical climates would probably find it chilly, especially at night.

You’ll log thousands of steps a day, when visiting Korea. Comfortable shoes are a must © Korea Tourism Organization

You’ll log a lot of miles while exploring Korea, so comfortable shoes are a must. I wear Loom waterproof sneakers , pretty much every day, I’m not wearing sandals, because they’re perfect for pretty much any conditions, stylish enough for city life, and actually 100% waterproof.

Best (and Worst) Times to Visit South Korea in 2024/2025

South Korea experiences four distinct seasons. Generally, the best times to visit South Korea are in spring (March to May) for the cherry blossoms and autumn (September to November) for the fall foliage . Both periods have mild temperatures with an average range of around 10–16°C (50–61°F), with more clear days than summer/winter.

The best time for you to visit South Korea could be different however, depending on what you want to see and your travel preferences. Read our article to find out the best times to visit South Korea based on different factors.

  • 1.South Korea Weather and Climate
  • 2. The Worst Times to Visit South Korea
  • 3. Best Times for Pleasant Weather and Fewer Crowds
  • 4. The Cheapest Time to Visit South Korea
  • 5. South Korea Travel Guide by Month

South Korea Weather and Climate

South Korea has four distinct seasons:

Spring (March to May): Being one of the best times to visit South Korea, the average temperature ranges from 8–16°C (46–61°F) , providing pleasant weather to enjoy the cherry blossoms and outdoor activities.

Summer (June to August): The sweltering conditions may make it uncomfortable for you to explore sightseeing spots during summer in South Korea. The average daily high during this season is 30°C (86°F) and there is frequent rainfall due to the rainy season. June is a better time to travel compared to July and August as it's cooler and has fewer crowds, with an average daily temperature range of 18–27°C (64–81°F).

Autumn (September to November): This is another one of the best times to visit South Korea. Cooler temperatures and decreased rainfall are the main features of this season. The average night-day temperature range is from 10 to 18°C (50–64°F). Many locals choose to go hiking during fall.

Winter (December to February): It is the coldest and driest time of the year, with temperatures ranging from 3 to 5°C (37–41°F) on a typical day. We don't usually advise visiting South Korea during this period because it is too cold for comfort. However, if you are going for skiing or snowboarding activities, it's a different story. A Japanese skiing/ winter experience is even better though.

The Worst Times to Visit South Korea

The summer months (July to August) in South Korea are the worst time to visit. High temperatures usually reach up 35°C (95°F) on the hottest days, and two-thirds of the annual rainfall occurs during this season, making heavy rainfall common. Therefore, you're recommended to avoid this period if you have a flexible schedule.

The second worst time to visit South Korea is in winter , from December to February. January is the coldest month of the year, with temperatures in Seoul sometimes dropping below -10°C (14°F) and occasionally falling below -15°C (5°F).

Best Times for Pleasant Weather and Fewer Crowds

Late April to May has mild weather in South Korea , with average daily temperatures ranging from 13 to 23°C (55–73°F), and there are more sunny days before the rainy season arrives. The crowds of people viewing the cherry blossoms have disappeared and the summer vacation has not yet started, making it a perfect time to do outdoor activities and go sightseeing.

June is the start of summer and the rainy season in South Korea. The night-day temperature range is about 18–27°C (64–81°F) and rainfall typically consists of steady drizzles, but it doesn't rain every day.

September marks the tail end of the summer crowds and the rainy season. The weather tends to be drier and cooler, with an average daily temperature range of 17–26°C (63–79°F). More crowds arrive in October and November for the colorful autumn scenery. South Korea usually has a 3-day holiday in September for the important Chuseok (Mid-Autumn) festival and some stores may close or open late. Chuseok would not affect your trip and could be a chance to see more of Korea's culture.

The Cheapest Time to Visit South Korea

Winter (December to February) is the cheapest time to visit South Korea, except during Christmas and New Year (usually from December 23rd to January 5th). Not only could you benefit from lower hotel prices and better deals on international flights, but also you would see fewer crowds. However, be prepared for the chilly weather!

South Korea Travel Guide by Month

January and february: cold and dry.

  • Average temperature: -4–5°C (25–41°F)
  • Average rainfall: 23 mm (1 in)

January and February in South Korea have the coldest and driest weather of the year, with temperatures dropping as low as -10°C (14°F). It's quite cold and it may not be an ideal time for you to visit the country.

Festivals and events: Seollal, Korean Lunar New Year, is the most important festival in South Korea. During this time, you could immerse yourself in Korean culture at a temple fair to experience traditional Korean performances, sample local cuisines, and pray for the coming year.

March to April: Best Time for Cherry Blossoms

  • Average temperature: 5–14°C (41–57°F)
  • Average rainfall: 56 mm (2 in)

The cherry blossom season, from March to April, is one of the best times to visit South Korea due to the pleasant weather and increased number of sunny days. The cherry blossoms are usually in full bloom from late March to early April.

Festivals and events: Cherry blossom festivals are held in many cities in South Korea to view the charming pink blossoms, and it's the most popular event in spring.

May: Warm with Clearer Days

  • Average temperature: 13–23°C (55–73°F)
  • Average rainfall: 106 mm (4 in)

May offers an excellent opportunity for travel in South Korea due to its pleasant climate and sunny days. It's a perfect time to travel, particularly if you have a flexible schedule , as the rainy season and summer vacation crowds have yet to arrive.

June: Coolest Summer Month

  • Average temperature: 18–27°C (64–81°F)
  • Average rainfall: 133 mm (5 in)

June marks the beginning of summer in South Korea and is considered to be the coolest month to travel during the summer season. However, it is also the start of the rainy season, which typically means a steady drizzle rather than downpours.

June is a better month for families with school-age children (if you can get time off school) compared to July and August because you could enjoy fewer crowds and lower costs.

Festivals and events: South Korea celebrates the Dragon Boat Festival. As well as seeing dragon boat races, you could also eat aizi cake (wormwood rice dumplings) and appreciate captivating traditional performances.

July to August: Hot and Humid

  • Average temperature: 22–31°C (72–88°F)
  • Average rainfall: 380 mm (15 in)

July and August are the hottest months of the year, and the rainfall is very high and sometimes stormy. However, it does not rain every day. High temperatures could exceed 35°C (95°F), creating an uncomfortable feeling of heat and humidity while doing outdoor sightseeing on some days. There are also the summer vacation crowds. If you are flexible with when you can go, it is suggested that you avoid this period.

September: End of the Rainy Season with Fewer Crowds

  • Average temperature: 17–26°C (63–79°F)
  • Average rainfall: 169 mm (7 in)

The weather becomes cooler and drier in September. You could expect fewer crowds and cheaper costs when traveling to South Korea during this month.

Festivals and events: The Chuseok festival is another important festival in South Korea where you could appreciate the full moon and enjoy traditional performances, immersing yourself in the festive atmosphere.

October to November: Best Time for Autumn Foliage

  • Average temperature: 7–16°C (45–61°F)
  • Average rainfall: 52 mm (2 in)

October to November is one of the peak times to travel to South Korea due to the comfortable weather and sunny days. The whole country explodes with colors and you could enjoy the stunning red and yellow fall foliage scenery.

December: Celebrating Christmas

  • Average temperature: -3–4°C (27–39°F)
  • Average rainfall: 22 mm (1 in)

December is cold and dry in South Korea. Although it's not quite as cold as January, it's too cold for travel without being encumbered by lots of warm clothing. If you want to celebrate Christmas with your family in South Korea, remember to book your Christmas feast in advance.

Jessie was amazing ! Everything from her level of English to her understanding of what we valued .

We had a good time exploring the city with Selinda!

Our guide lele is a wealth of information, Lele is very professional and very attentive to our needs. Lele is amazing. Lele got everything spot on. It probably helps that Guilin is a brilliant place to visit so Lele has great material to work with but that doesn't take anything away from how much Lele helped make it a great trip.

Our guide for Beijing was super knowledgeable and experienced and able to help us to achieve as much as we wanted within the time given. We had a fun time guided by him as he is also super humorous and you can see how he interacts with the vendors and people whom he comes by. Thank you for a very enjoyable time in Beijing and accommodating to all our needs!

Our China Highlight guide. Michael, was attentive, thoughtful and knowledgeable. He narrated many interesting historical events about Chengdu while touring around the city and having afternoon tea with us. He was thoughtful to provide us with snacks during long hikes at Leshan or walks around the city.

She was very flexible and added extra time when we needed it and we felt extremely well taken care of. She also chose the best restaurants for us,

Our tour guide Helen, was excellent, she was very kind, professional and passionate for her work and she also loves Pandas! She will take you to take the best panda photos and to know more about Chengdu city. Our tour was great, she took us to all our destinations always with the best spots: Temples, pagodas, famous streets, theaters, pandas...you name it! Everything was great.

He picked up our pre-booked boat/other excursions tickets so we were able to avoid all the long lines and chaos. He is knowledgeable of the places we visited, courteous, fun to travel with and well-versed in Chinese classics.

Tom is the guide that will take you to where no other guide will. We pushed for the experience and Tom and the team delivered more than what we could have ever asked for. His English speaking ability and his Chinese history knowledge is second to none.

Travel back in time with Jeonju Hanok Village Tour

Jeonju Hanok Village Tour

Jeonju Hanok Village is located in the city of Jeonju in Jeonbuk province. There are over 800 traditional Korean houses located in a district of narrow alleys. Just walking through the streets, you will go back in time during the Joseon dynasty. The Hanok village retains its historical charms and traditions. It remains the most significant intact Hanok village of the country.

A distinctive feature of these houses is that they are still heated in a traditional way with ondol. Ondol is a traditional underfloor heating system. You will be able to know how it works during your tour.

Experience Korean traditional life

Bibimbap – Jeonju Hanok Village Tour

For lunch, you will eat traditional Korean bibimbap in a traditional atmosphere. If you are still a bit hungry, you can try Jeonju street food: meat and cheese skewers, shrimp dumplings or a sweet flavor with traditional mochis or hand-made ice cream.

During your day trip in Jeonju, you will see the Jeongdong Catholic Church and have a break in the Gyeonggijeon Shrine, built in 1410 (destroyed during the Imjin War and rebuilt in 1614). The portraits of King Tae-jo and some of his successors are displayed in the shrine. For fans of Korean drama, the Gyeonggijeon shrine has been the filming place of the drama Moonlight drawn by clouds. Besides, if you want to see more shooting locations of the drama, you can take the direction of Jeonju Hyanggyo, traditional school during the Joseon dynasty. Like the Gyeonggijeon shrine, the school has been destroyed and rebuilt in 1603.

We made an exclusive tour for fans of this drama  😉

Check out our Moonlight Drawn by clouds Tour.

You can wear the traditional Korean outfit, Hanbok while meandering through the streets. Your travel back in time will feel more realistic.

Seoraksan Mountain Tour

September has cool weather, not too hot, not too cold. It is perfect to escape from Seoul and go hiking in one of the best natural spots of Korea: Seoraksan mountain . In September, you will first see the trace of the new autumn foliage coming. The Seoraksan Mountain is the highest mountain in Gwangwon province.

When you arrive there, you will take the Seorak Cable Car for a 10 minutes ride above the spectacular cliffs to the Gwongeumseong Fortress. You can see ruins of a castle probably built by the 23 rd King of Goryeo.

Then, you will explore the National Park protecting 1200 species of rare plants and over 2000 animal species. The park was designated as a Biosphere Preservation District by UNESCO in 1982. Maybe, you will have the chance to see a Korea goral or a deer. Furthermore, you can visit several temples like the Anrakarm temple surrounded by two waterfalls and the Naksansa Temple (as an option). The Naksansa temple is facing the sea, which gives a splendid view. You can visit the pavilion built on a cliff, where you can meditate. Do not forget to stop by the statue of buddha called Haesugwaneumsang.

While enjoying the festival, you can go to see filming places of these two dramas.

You will go to Seodongyo Theme Park, shooting location of the dramas “Seodongyo” and “Moonlight drawn by clouds”. In this park, you can see royal residences of Baekje and Silla dynasties, places for banquets, the commoner’s village and the noble’s village. You can participate in several cultural activities such as trying on drama costumes, playing Jegichagi (a traditional game), making the character bracelet or necklace…

Kensington Hotel Seorak , the nearest hotel with less than 5 mins walk to Seoraksan National Park 's entrance.

If you can't find your preferred accommodation near to Seoraksan National Park , you may like to consider to stay with  Lotte Resort Sokcho  or other accommodation at Sokcho seaside town.

The seasons of Seoul: the best times to visit

Ann Babe

korea travel september

Seoul has something to offer visitors every month of the year © Nghia Khanh / Shutterstock

With a temperate continental climate, Seoul is known for its biting winters and blistering summers.

In between are the long-awaited but all-too-fleeting pockets of perfectly enjoyable weather, perhaps the best moments to visit. Even so, every season in South Korea ’s capital offers something worth traveling for  – with excitement in the calendar all year long – which might make for a difficult decision when it comes to planning your trip.

Customarily, summer brings the most international visitors to Seoul, further congesting an already packed city. Yet in recent years, spring and fall – with fetching foliage and ideal weather – have caught on as in-demand times to visit, too.

As you make your own plans, here’s our guide to the best times to visit Seoul.

A man eats street food at a stall at Myeong-Dong Night Market, Seoul, South Korea

March to May and September to November are the best times for outdoor attractions

Unquestionably the most agreeable seasons in Seoul, spring and fall are also the best times to soak up the city’s great outdoors, from the natural wonders of its national and city parks to the back-alley treasures of its traditional villages, temples, markets and street-food stalls . A prized spot, the Han River is where visitors can paddle around on swan boats or have a chimaek picnic of fried chicken and beer ( chimaek is a slang portmanteau that combines “chicken” with the Korean word for beer, maekju ).

Every March, the Seoul Marathon  welcomes some 35,000 runners, from expert to amateur. Unlike some other races, anyone who signs up ahead of time is qualified to participate. April arguably presents Seoul’s loveliest face, when spring bursts forth in a palette of pinks and whites and the cherry blossom trees bloom in cotton-candy swirls. Two favorite viewing spots are Yeouido Park and Namsan Park , where spectators stroll down petal-lined paths and picnic beneath flowering canopies.

People walk among cherry blossoms in spring at Seoul Forest public park, Seoul, South Korea

Fall heralds the arrival of favorite annual traditions. South Korea’s fall harvest holiday, Chuseok, generally takes place in September: get into the harvest spirit by observing the ceremonial ritual of Sajik Daeje, a 50-minute procession that winds its way through the city near Gyeongbokgung station, paying homage to the ancient gods of earth and grain.

The crisp, dry weather continues through November and the temperature drops considerably, making this month a less expensive time to visit than September and October. The most notable happening this month might be the Seoul Lantern Festival, which sets Cheong-gye-cheon ablaze with paper lanterns and LED sculptures.

June to August are best for indoor activities

While June can be pleasant, July and August bring unbearable heat and humidity, along with heavy rains that can last all day. Luckily, Seoul has plenty of things to do for keeping dry and cool inside. Go museum or gallery hopping , experience South Korea’s quirky cafe culture or get lost in Asia’s largest underground shopping mall,  COEX , where after you’re through browsing you can enjoy an aquarium, library, movie theater and casino.

Save money and avoid the crowds from December to February

Despite its cold climate, with dry winds that wreak havoc on the skin and throat, Seoul is wondrous in the winter. The diminished crowds make the city feel smaller and more intimate, drawing into stark relief the sights, sounds and scents of everyday life. Think snow-dusted palaces, shopkeepers sweeping the flakes from their front stoops and roasted chestnuts and sweet potatoes perfuming the air. You can also stretch your budget further, as the cold winter months are the most affordable time to visit.

If you enjoy winter sports, venture out for a day of skiing, snowboarding or ice fishing. Seollal, the Korean New Year based on the lunar calendar, typically falls between late January and mid-February. In the lead-up to the holiday, be on the lookout for special celebrations and traditional performances at folk villages and palaces.

Top things to do in Seoul, South Korea in September

top things to do in seoul pin

Seoul in September is wonderful as it’s not too warm and not too cold, usually between 15 and 25 degrees celcius. Therefore it’s the perfect temperature for exploring the city. We found Seoul to be a very unique city with lots happening. So here are our recommendations for the top things to do in Seoul.

Enjoy the street food on myeongdong

The street food on Myeongdong shopping street is amazing. The carts line the street on either side providing so much choice and variety from around 4pm to 11pm each day. We recommend the Korean fried chicken with rice cakes, fried cheese skewers and Nutella crepes, which are all delicious.

visit the Bukchon Hanok village

It’s great to discover the traditional elements of Seoul that contrast with the modern city. Therefore, we would highly recommend wandering around the Bukchon Hanok village. It’s a 600 year old village with traditional style homes. Whilst in the area also check out Shin Old Tea House. The tea house feels very authentic where you can sit on the floor and taste some floral teas.

The area of Gangnam became famous to many of us because of the Psy song Gangnam Style which made the charts in 2012. Like us, you may have heard of Gangnam before you had even heard of Seoul and therefore you need to check it out. The area is home to many beautiful designer stores which is great for window shopping. Also check out the Coex shopping mall for the coolest library. If you are a K-Pop fan don’t miss K-Star road. Here you will find a trail of cute bears dedicated to different K-pop groups.

try lots of different noodles

The options of noodles in Seoul is endless. So visit any 7 Eleven and start working your way through them. We’d highly recommend the fire noodles if you like spicy food.

I can only recommend everyone to do the tour, we as a group had a lot of fun together and our tour guide was nice and always available for us when we had questions, the accommodation in the hotels on our trip were good, not to mention our driver who brought us well from one place to another. The tour was well planned and executed. The hotel rooms were a lower level than we have become accustomed on other tours of this nature. The meals at lunch and breakfast were excellent. Although the tour director knew the history and aspects of the places we experienced, we were afforded very little time exploring and learning. The few times we were released to do this were very welcome. The sights and choices of events were excellent.

10-Day Premium South Korea Adventure: Culture, Cuisine, and Coastlines

This was my first time in South Korea and the Dragon Tour (Premium) was exactly what I was looking for. The start in Seoul and ending in Jeju was designed perfectly. Even the traditional hanok style stay followed by the Temple stay was timed well. The guide was humorous and down to earth while also sharing cultural and historical information that represented South Korea professionally and personally. The access to street food in Myeongdong was very wise. It let us literally taste contemporary South Korea so that our taste buds were primed to explore more as the tour continued.

Daniel was an amazing guide. A truly caring person who wants his travelers to maximise their travel experience. He's always happy, joyful and lots of positive energy bursting at the rim. He knows his history well and we learned so much from him. The last night's dinner was like high school graduation when we all didn't want to part ways. Even if it was already so late at night and Daniel almost missed his last train home, he stuck with us to the last minutes saying our sad goodbyes to all our newfound friends through G Adventures. And...... Daniel is a rock star at karaoke night!! We never laughed so hard in our life. What an great CEO. What a great group of amazing people. Thank you so much. Daniel, just a piece of advise which you already know because we have actually told you..... Please slow down, it's so hard to catch up with you and your fast walking pace. Hahaha. Take care and all the best.

The 10 day Soulful Korea tour was fast paced with a LOT of walking and hill climbing. If you are in at least average physical condition, you should ne able to enjoy the events. What people love about South Korea Tours in September

Had a wondering time in South Korea. Andi was a great guide, got us to each destination safely and with tons of knowledge of each place and Korea in general. I highly recommend him. He even handled it very calmly and safety, us getting stuck in a bad snow storm (the van couldn't make it up the hill to the hotel, about 1 KM, the last night) Thank you Andi. The tour itself was also great, you see a lot in the 5 days, but also don't feel rushed. I would recommend the tour to anyone :)

Transportation tips.

When traveling in South Korea, there are several transportation options to consider. In Seoul, the most convenient and efficient way to get around is by using the local public transportation system, which includes an extensive subway network and bus services.

Taxis and ride-sharing services such as Uber are also readily available and can be hailed from the streets or through mobile apps.

For day trips or exploring outside of the city, renting a car is a popular option, but make sure to have an international driving permit. It is recommended to plan your itinerary in advance and check the transportation routes and schedules to make the most of your time.

Safety Tips

  •  South Korea is generally a safe destination with a low crime rate.
  • Take basic precautions and be aware of your surroundings.
  • Keep an eye on your belongings, especially in crowded areas, to prevent pickpocketing.
  • Respect local customs and etiquette, such as removing your shoes when entering homes or traditional Korean restaurants.
  • Avoid discussions or activities that may be seen as disrespectful or offensive to local culture.
  • Stick to well-lit and populated areas, especially at night.
  • Avoid areas with a reputation for higher crime rates.
  • Use licensed taxis and reputable transportation services.
  • In areas like Itaewon and Hongdae known for nightlife, stay alert and cautious.

Overall, South Korea is safe, but being prepared and using common sense enhances your trip’s safety and enjoyment.

Travel Requirements

For traveling from India to South Korea, it is important to have a valid passport with at least six months of validity. Indian nationals are generally required to obtain a visa before entering South Korea. Visa applications can be submitted to the Embassy or Consulate of South Korea in India.

Additionally, it is advisable to check the travel advisories and entry restrictions for foreign visitors by contacting the Embassy or Consulate. Regarding vaccinations, it is recommended to consult a healthcare professional or a travel clinic for any specific requirements or recommendations for South Korea.

Cultural Norms + Etiquette

When visiting South Korea, it is important to be aware of and respectful of local customs and etiquette. South Koreans place a strong emphasis on politeness and respect, so it is customary to bow when greeting someone, especially when meeting someone older or of higher social status.

It is also important to remove your shoes when entering someone’s home or certain establishments, such as temples or traditional tea houses.

When dining, wait for the eldest person to start eating before beginning your meal, and use chopsticks instead of your hands. Tipping is not common in South Korea, as service charges are often included in the bill.

However, it is appreciated to leave a small token of appreciation, such as a small gift or a sincere thank-you. Overall, being respectful, polite, and mindful of local customs will make your visit to South Korea more enjoyable and memorable.

Some Local Daily Common Use Words

Some recommended hospitals in Seoul include Asan Medical Center, Seoul National University Hospital, and Samsung Medical Center.

Pharmacies are easily found throughout the country, and they usually offer a variety of over-the-counter medications. It’s important to note that most pharmacies in South Korea close early, so it’s advisable to purchase any necessary medications during the day.

How to travel around South Korea

We rented a car and went on a road trip in South Korea.

You won’t need your car in Seoul so our advice would be to pick up your car from one of the many downtown locations when you leave for Gyeongju.

You can rent a car from Rentalcars.com , QEEQ , or Klook.

Here is all the information you need about renting a car and driving in Korea.

If you prefer not to drive you can use the train. Both Gyeongju and Busan have good train connections. If you travel this itinerary by train you will save with the Korea Rail Pass .

1 week in South Korea: Our South Korea itinerary

Most international flights arrive in Seoul. This makes it the logical city to start our tour.

Day 1 -2: Seoul

Seoul represents the futuristic race the country has run over the past years.  The pace at which this city has been undergoing development is similar to that of Chinese cities.

Seoul expanded enormously over the years and now houses almost 12 million people. It borders Incheon in the West and Bukhansan National Park in the North.

The highlights can be visited in a few days but you will need weeks to discover all areas of this stretched-out megapolis.

Seoul Cheonggycheon river walk, South Korea

Seoul city walk

Depending on what time you arrive in Seoul you can do (part of this) walk to get a good first impression of this fantastic city.

The city counts 5 palaces.   We visited Gyeongbokgung Palace, the most popular one, to watch the changing of the guards. Later on, we also went to Unhyeoungung Palace and Deosugung Palace. Those palaces are not as popular which makes them ideal for a complete and tranquil visit.

From Unhyeoungung you can continue to Bukchon Hanok Village, one of the most beautiful places in South Korea to stroll between the traditional Hanok houses.

From Bukchon it’s not far to Insadong , one of the most traditional and cultural districts in Seoul and a great place for lunch.

Make sure to drop by the beautifully decorated Jogyesa temple.

A little bit further out, but worth the detour, is Gwangjang market.

This is a traditional street market where you can mingle with the Koreans to taste some of the local street-food delicacies.

Have a look at the stalls that sell San-nakji which is raw octopus that is killed by cutting it into pieces on your plate so that the tentacles are still moving while it is served.

I can assure you that we did not try this either but there’s a lot more you can enjoy like the Soonday (blood sausage), different kinds of rice rolls, and bindaetteok, a kind of pancake.

Seoul, Gwangjang market, South Korea

Coming back from Gwangjang take a left at the futuristic Jongno tower towards Myeongdong .

Where you cross the Cheonggyecheon River, you will find several food trucks.

After you have discovered the Myeongdong shopping district you can make your way to the modern city hall and walk along the wide Sejong-daero boulevard back towards Gyeongbokgung palace.

Seoul Itinerary

Now that you’ve already got the first impression of this thriving capital it’s time to explore it further.

You can easily spend a day exploring the city’s palaces and Bukchon Hanok Village. A second day can be spent going to Namsan Park where you can go up the Seoul Tower. Afterward, you can visit Myeongdong and Hongdae.

If you ask us, the DMZ is also something not to be missed.

As you can see there is more than enough to do for 2 days.

We won’t go into more detail here. Instead, have a look at our detailed 3-7 day Seoul Itinerary . Our recommendation would be to focus on the first 2 days of this itinerary, but of course, you are free to create your own itinerary based on the different activities that we describe.

Organized Tours in Seoul

Here is an overview of the best-organized tours in Seoul.  An organized tour saves you time and, moreover, the tour guide will enlighten you about the different sights you visit.

We partnered up with GetYourGuide and Klook for these activities.

We love GetYourGuide because they’re flexible.  Sometimes your plans change last minute and then you want to be able to cancel your tickets and get your money back.  It’s also good to know that GetYourGuide has your back when the local tour operator doesn’t show up or cancels your trip.

Klook is a trustworthy travel company headquartered in Hong Kong that teams up with local operators to offer all kinds of travel experiences.

We selected 3 excellent tours in Seoul just for you.

Visit the DMZ

Dorosan train station, DMZ, Seoul

Visiting the DMZ is a must-do when you are in Seoul. The DMZ area is located around 60 km up north of Seoul and can only be visited with a guided tour.

Make sure to book your tours well in advance as they often sell-out.  Trips to the DMZ run Tuesday to Friday.

Book a full-day tour that includes the JSA , the Joint Security Area, the place where the 2 countries meet, and where you can step across the border and be in North Korea for a few minutes.

You can read more about the DMZ in day 3 of this itinerary and we have a full article online that compares the different tours that you can book to visit the DMZ.

Where to stay in Seoul?

Seoul is a large city with lots of districts each with its own styles and attractions.

Here we share the best places to stay for tourists and first-timers based on our own experience.

Myeongdong – City Center

Myeongdong is right in the heart of Seoul’s city center.

This is one of the most popular places to stay.

The district does draw large crowds of tourists as well as shoppers and once the sun settles people flock to the streets to stroll along the pop-up food stalls and enjoy some of the best street food that Seoul has to offer.

You will also find plenty of restaurant options, we had some of the best dakgalbi in this district.

By staying in Myeongdong you are close to the Namsan Seoul Tower and the Namdaemun Sungnyemun gate.

Metro hotel

Metro hotel Myendong South Korea

The Metro hotel is within walking distance of shopping areas, street food, and public transportation.

The rooms are small but clean and all have complimentary water, tea, and coffee facilities.

The hotel offers a complimentary smartphone which you can use to make local calls and take out when exploring.

The hotel offers a free massage chair to use in the main lobby which is nice after a tiring day sightseeing.

Check prices and availability:

Booking.com

Insa-Dong – Palace Quarter

Insa-dong is one of the most traditional and cultural districts in Seoul and a very touristy district.  The streets are lined with souvenir shops, restaurants, and tea houses.

You are within walking distance of most palaces, the Jogyesa Buddhist Temple, Bukchon Hanok village, and Gwanghwamum square.

This is probably the best location if you’re short on time and want to visit the highlights on foot.

Sunbee hotel

Sunbee Hotel Insadong South Korea

The Sunbee hotel is close to 2 subway stations, the Bukchon Hanok Village, and Seoul’s city center.

There are many nice restaurants, tea houses, and cafes near the hotel.

This is an excellent location for sightseeing.  The rooms are large and have good beds.

The hotel staff is always friendly and willing to help and most of them speak English.

We stayed in Gangnam the commercial district of Seoul that attracts the rich and young crowds who come here to spend their hard-earned money in the many exclusive bars, restaurants, and nightlife venues.

Its huge boulevards are lined with skyscrapers and are best enjoyed after dark when Gangnam comes alive and the huge billboards lighten up the neighborhood.

Gangnam is a little outside of the traditional tourist spots and might not be ideal if this is your first visit to Seoul.

Seoul has one of the world’s largest subway networks and the trains run frequently.  Still, it took us 45 minutes to get from Gangnam to Anguk, one of the major stations in InsaDong, the Palace District.

The advantage of staying in Gangnam is that the hotel rooms tend to be a tad larger here compared to the city center.

Aloft Seoul Gangnam

Seoul Aloft Gangnam, South Korea

Aloft Seoul Gangnam is about 5 mins walk to Cheongdam station (line 7). The subway system takes you relatively easy and fast to all the places of interest.

The hotel is very easy to reach from Incheon airport (Airport Bus 6006 literally stops in front of the entrance) and is in the nice Cheongdam Area with a bunch of good food options and coffee shops.

Nice rooms with great service. Friendly and helpful staff.

If you aren’t convinced of the above-mentioned hotels have a look at our other Seoul accommodations posts.

There are 2 international airports in Seoul,  Incheon International Airport   and  Gimpo airport.

How to get from Incheon airport to Seoul

Most international passengers will arrive at Incheon International Airport.

South Korea’s largest airport is 47km from  Seoul Station , which is considered to be the center of Seoul.  The airport is well-connected to this station.

Some hotels have courtesy shuttles to Seoul station but if they don’t you could continue your journey with the subway, the train, the limousine bus, or organize a private transfer.

How to get around Seoul?

The easiest way to travel around Seoul is to use   the subway.

Seoul’s subway is well-connected and quite cheap.

Single-ride cards  can be purchased on vending machines with coins and bills, credit cards are not accepted.

T-money recharge card

To avoid the hassle of buying tickets for each and every ride you can opt for the  T-money recharge card .

Korea tour card

If you are visiting more places in South Korea, we advise you to buy a Korea Tour Card. This is a T-money card that can be used in the whole of Korea.

In addition to the comfort of just having to tap the card whenever you use public transportation, you also get discounts at a number of popular attractions, including Lotte World, Everland, and several more.

If you have an Android phone, you can even use a digital version of the T-money card.

This card is a great deal as it is even cheaper than a regular T-money card. It costs ₩6000 and has a ₩5000 value that can be used towards rides.

Korail railPlus transport card

In addition to the subway and busses, this card can also be used on Korail’s intercity trains, including the fast KTX trains.

Note that The Discover Seoul Pass is not always available.

If it isn’t, you can see if they have the BTS edition. It’s a 24hr edition of the Discover Seoul Pass without the T-money option.

Instead, you get a Korea Tour T-money Card as a bonus.

The BTS edition covers the same attractions as the regular Discover Seoul Pass.

Sunset on Wolji pond Gyeongju South Korea

Day 3 -4: Gyeongju

The next stop on our 1-week Korea itinerary is Gyeongju.

As soon as you leave Seoul you will find yourself surrounded by high mountains and idyllic countryside. A stark contrast with the urban jungle of Seoul.

For the next 2 to 6 hours you will see endless green landscapes that occasionally have to make way for rugged mountain tops.

Gyeongju used to be the capital of Korea during the Silla dynasty and today it is still recognized as the cultural capital of the country.

This makes Gyeongju a must-visit on your 7-day Korea itinerary.

How to get to Gyeongju from Seoul

The fastest and easiest way is by KTX train . KTX trains travel between Seoul station and Singyeongju Station. The journey takes around 2 hours. From Singyeongju you can take a bus to Gyeongju. The bus ride adds another 30 minutes.

Don’t forget to buy a Korea Rail Pass . If you do the round trip between Seoul and Singyeongju, with a stopover in Busan, you will save with a Korea Rail Pass .

Having a rental car offers more freedom but you won’t be able to beat the time it takes for the train to reach the city. Using turnpikes the journey takes 4 hours, if you want to avoid tolls it will take somewhere between 5 and 6 hours.

The advantage of self-driving is that you can enjoy the beautiful landscape at your own pace, and make a stopover in the Andong Hahoe Folk village.

South Korea Gyeongju Donggung Palace Wolji Pond

The Andong Hahoe Folk Village

On your way from Seoul to Gyeongju, you will pass the Andong Hahoe Folk Village.

Allow 2 hours for a visit to this folkloristic village. We had mixed feelings about our visit.  This well-preserved village forms a valuable part of Korean culture and is recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage site. But it is not an open-air museum.

All houses are inhabited and most are hidden behind high ramparts and closed gates.  Therefore you cannot visit the houses, you can only stroll through the streets or drive through them with a golf cart as many Asian tourists do.

It feels strange to pay an entrance fee just to walk through the streets of an inhabited village.

I hope our entrance fee helps the inhabitants to conserve their village but as a visitor, I would have loved to see the inside of some of these houses and some more historical context like you get in most folk villages.

That’s why I would recommend taking a guide who can give you some context about the things you see. He or she can teach you all kinds of things about Korean culture, architecture, and religion. I’m sure we would have appreciated our visit more with a guide.

If you want to visit the Andong Hahoe Folk Village but don’t want to drive there yourself you can join an organized day tour from Seoul. If you’re a party of 3 or more you can arrange your own private group trip.

Individual tour

Things to do in Gyeongju

Gyeongju is a relatively small town and most sights are within walking distance.

You can see most of the highlights of Gyeongju by walking from the city center past the Royal Tombs (often compared to Teletubbies houses) and the observation tower to the Donggung Palace with the Wolji Pond.

The most charming moment to visit the Palace is after dark when the reflection of the palace in the water turns your visit into a fairytale story.

Still, it is a good idea to buy your tickets during the day so that when you come back in the evening you can walk straight in and skip the huge lines at the ticket machines.

Bulgaksa is a popular temple near Gyeongju.  Recognized as Unesco World heritage it houses 7 of South Korea’s national treasures.

From the temple, you can hike to the nearby Seokguram Grotto which is part of the temple and also recognized as Unesco World heritage.

It’s a scenic 45-minute uphill walk.  It is a small but peaceful temple with a stone-carved Buddha in the cave.

No photographing is allowed and a glass wall has been put up to protect the interior of the cave.

Where to stay in Gyeongju

Gyeongju gg tourist hotel.

Gg tourist hotel Gyeongju South Korea

We stayed at the Gyeongju GG Tourist Hotel. The hotel lies in a good location right in the city center near the bus terminal.

It’s easy to walk to the Royal tombs as well as the other UNESCO World Heritage sites in the ancient tomb complex.

The hotel has spacious and comfortable rooms with a big bathroom.

The only negative that we can say is that the walls of the room are quite thin. We had a lot of noise from our neighbors who were arguing until late at night. But I suppose we were just unlucky with our neighbors this night.

If you have a car you can also opt for a hotel near Bomun lake where you can take long walks around the lake.

Hotel Lahan Select Gyeongju

Hotel Hyundai Gyeongju South Korea

Hotel Lahan Select Gyeongju offers comfortable rooms with a balcony.

The hotel is in a great location next to the lake, a stroll around the lake is lovely, certainly during the cherry blossom season.

The hotel has a buffet restaurant, Chinese restaurant, coffee shop, bakery & wine shop, kids’ play area, and video gaming room.

The professional hotel staff speaks English.

Busan Haeundae Beach, South Korea

Day 5 – 6: Busan

Next on our list is Busan , South Korea’s fastest-growing city. A fishing village bursting at the seams.

Getting to Busan

If you travel by train, the journey from Gyeongju to Busan takes about 1 hour.

You will first need to jump on the bus to Singyeongju station where you can board a KTX train for Busan.

If you drive yourself it will take 2 hours if you use the toll roads or 30 minutes more if you avoid them.

Things to do in Busan

Busan is located along South Korea’s southeastern coast. It has some wonderful beaches and draws huge crowds during the summer months.

Haeundae beach is a nice place to stay if you fancy a romantic stroll on the beach before you retire to your hotel room.

The nearby Dongbaek park offers splendid nocturnal views on the 7-km long Gwangandaegyo bridge, better known as the Diamond bridge.

Busan Diamond Bridge Gwangandaegyo, South Korea

On hot days you can cool down in the Shinsegae Centum city shopping center.

Holding the record of the world’s largest shopping complex you will be able to tie on your ice skates and practice some rounds on the ice rink or relax in Spa Land.

An enormous spa complex with 22 different spas and a mixture of 13 different  Korean traditional ‘Jjimjil-bang’ saunas and saunas from all over the world.

Busan’s Sea Life Aquarium is also in Haeundae. It’s highly regarded, certainly by couples with kids.  If you visit the aquarium you can save a lot of money by buying discount tickets online here.

There are over 3500 islands to discover in South Korea. One of the most famous and beautiful is Jeju island.

In the center of Busan, you will find the Busan tower and the Nampodong & Jagalchi markets.

A little outside of the city is Taejongdae Resort Park, a peninsula that offers breathtaking views, and the Instagram-worthy Haedong Yonggungsa temple.

Also worth mentioning is the colorful cultural village of Gamcheon.   Due to the photogenic stacked houses, this place is very popular with tourists.

Busan has loads more to offer. We recommend that you follow our 2-day Busan itinerary .

Organized Tours in Busan

Busan lacks the efficient public transportation network of Seoul. There is a metro network but many of the tourist sights are far from the subway stops and will require a ride by bus. A car is therefore still useful in this city.

For those who do not have a rental car, we share some organized tours below. With these organized tours, you can efficiently visit the different sights.

You will not need to plot out your own itinerary and you won’t lose time waiting for the bus.

Bukhansan National Park, South Korea

Day 7: Seoul

The last day of your 7-day South Korea travel itinerary takes us back to Seoul to spend more time in this huge metropolis.

Seoul, Seoul Tower Love locks, South Korea

Several viewpoints offer dramatic views of the vastness of Seoul.

The Seoul tower and Seoul sky (in the Lotte world center) are perhaps the 2 most known and most accessible while the vistas from Bukhansan National Park are not as widely known.

The views from the park are at least as good and we absolutely recommend that nature lovers reserve some time to visit the park.

The trail that leads up to the Bogungmun gate of the old fort is tiring but once you reach the top you are rewarded with a beautiful view of the park and the vast city.

From here you can follow the ramparts of the old fort to the Daeseongmun gate where you can go back down via another path.

You can also use your last day for a great day trip (or weekend trip) from Seoul.

Here is an overview of more fun things to do in Korea.

If you have 2 weeks in South Korea, check out this post.

South Korea travel tips

Let’s end this Korea itinerary blog with some Korean travel tips.

What’s the best time to visit South Korea?

May, September, and October are the best months to visit South Korea.

June, July, and August are rainier and hotter with temperatures reaching 25 to 30 degrees.  Moreover, the risk of typhoons is also greater.

In May everything starts to bloom and in September and October, the autumn colors make the landscapes very photogenic.

We visited South Korea in April and had 2 rainy days over the course of 2 weeks and a half.

Here is a step-by-step guide to planning your trip to Korea.

Going independent or joining an organized tour

We found it easy and straightforward to create our own travel itinerary for South Korea. Korea is a very modern country, we could book and arrange everything online.

We also found it pretty easy to travel around the country independently.

But if you don’t want to travel independently you could join an organized tour. TourRadar is a trustworthy company where you can book an organized tour.

If you prefer an organized tour, have a look at our overview of the best Korea package tours.

Cheap flights to South Korea

If you want to score  cheap flights  to Korea we advise you to have a look at  Momondo and  Skyscanner .

Both are flight aggregators that compare several hundreds of booking sites and give you an overview of the best flights and the cheapest sites to book them.

Momondo and Skyscanner are both very good at finding good deals, of the two, Momondo is probably the one with the most intuitive user interface.

Wondering how to find a cheap flight? Have a look at this post.

Do I need travel insurance for Korea?

Travel Insurance is something that can be overlooked when you prepare for your vacation.

Certainly when you’re traveling to a safe and civilized country.  We didn’t get travel insurance for our first vacation.

A few years later we both took out new credit cards that came with travel insurance and relied on those.  We know better now…

Overall, chances are slim that you will encounter any problems while traveling through a civilized country such as Korea. But when things go wrong in civilized countries, the medical costs can be high.

We learned it the hard way when we once had to visit a hospital in the United States.  The medical care was excellent but we had high out-of-pocket expenses as it turned out the insurance that came without credit cards didn’t cover these costs.  It turned out we were underinsured.

Drawing up a travel insurance policy may seem expensive at first but it can potentially save you a significant sum, significantly more than the small insurance fee.

Good travel insurance, such as the one from SafetyWing and HeyMondo , covers things like medical expenses, trip cancellation, overseas medical costs, evacuation, baggage damage or loss, and theft.

Exploring South Korea by car

We would encourage you to explore South Korea by car. There’s nothing wrong with the public transit system in cities like Seoul. But there’s nothing that can beat the freedom of having your own car.

You’re the master of your own schedule and you just need to load your bags in your trunk.

Taking the train often means that you will be dragging your bags up and down several flights of stairs.

Yes, there’re elevators but they’re not always very easy to find.

So here we will share what you need to know to do the perfect South Korean road trip.

Money in South Korea

Cash is king for visitors.  Koreans can swipe their cards everywhere but foreign cards are not always accepted.

There were many ATMs at Incheon airport and it took us at least an hour to find one where we could withdraw cash.  Most tourists were helping each other by pointing out other ATMs to their fellow tourists. It seems all foreigners were having the same problems.

Once we had left the airport things didn’t get better.  It was always a hit or miss with the ATMs we tried.

Most wouldn’t accept our cards, but some did. Usually, we never suggest bringing cash but it looks like it may be a good idea to bring some cash to South Korea.

And once you have found an ATM that gives you cash make sure to withdraw enough! We couldn’t use our credit cards for toll fees.  We had better luck in restaurants and gas stations where our cards were usually accepted.

Seoul, Bukchon Hanok Village, South Korea

Safety in South Korea

We didn’t encounter any problems whatsoever (except getting cash :-)) during our week in Korea but if you would you can call the travel hotline in 4 languages (Korean, English, Japanese and Chinese) 24/7.

Internet in South Korea

South Korea has the fastest internet in the world. A lot of places offer free WiFi. We don’t know why, but we didn’t always manage to get on the wifi.

Because we used quite a few apps to help us to travel around Seoul and to check for the best places to eat we bought a  local sim card.

This way we were certain that we always had internet.

You can purchase your  SIM card  here or read our full post about  what’s the best SIM card for tourists.

We used our own  Pocket WIFI device  to share the 4G connection but if you don’t have a device of your own you can also  rent one online  and pick it up at the airport.

Rent your Pocket WIFI device  or read our full post about  the best Pocket WIFI  device.

Handy South Korean apps

Mangoplate is the app to check for restaurant reviews and the best places to eat.

Naver Maps is your GPS companion for your road trip.

Google Maps navigation is not working in South Korea and despite some people reporting that Waze was working for them, it was not for us.

The Naver Maps app is available in English (their website is only in Korean) and the app’s look and feel is very intuitive and very much similar to any other GPS app.

Available on: Google Play – Apple (This app is not getting much love for its Apple version.  We used the Android version which worked like a charm)

Korea Seoul Metro Navi

Korea Seoul Metro Navi will guide you quickly and efficiently through Seoul’s extended subway system.  The app calculates the fastest route to your destination.

Available on: Google Play – Apple

If you plan on taking taxis, we recommend that you use the Kakao Taxi app.

Available on: Google Play , – Apple

Entry, Exit and Visa Requirements

  • You must have a valid U.S. passport to enter Korea. From April 1, 2023, to December 31, 2024, the  Korean Electronic Travel Authorization (K-ETA)  is not required for US citizens for stays of 90 days or less that are for tourism or business purposes.
  • Visa required for all other purposes, including employment, teaching English, and for stays longer than 90 days.

Exceeding your authorized stay or not possessing a valid visa may result in detention and fines.

  • In the event of an overstay, apply for a visa extension from the  Korea Immigration Service (KIS)  before attempting to leave the country. Also consult with KIS regarding changes in visa category.

Military Personnel/DOD and their families on orders:

  • Consult  DOD Foreign Clearance Guide , and follow all instructions.
  • Enter Korea with DOD identification and travel orders.
  • Do not transit other countries such as China without a passport and appropriate visas.
  • Family Members/Dependents of Military Personnel/DOD on orders must present upon arrival passports valid for at least six months .

U.S. Government Executive Branch personnel on official business and DOD personnel assigned to the U.S. Embassy  (Including family members/dependents):

  • Employes assigned to Mission Korea should enter Korea with a diplomatic or official passport and a diplomatic or official Korean visa obtained through their sponsoring agency.  Check with your sponsoring agency about other requirements.
  • TDY visitors traveling to Korea for up to 90 days on diplomatic or official passports do  not  require Korean visas and do  not  require a K-ETA. TDY visitors must obtain country clearance using  Department of State's eCC system  or  DOD APACS system .

HIV/AIDS Restriction:  The Department of State is unaware of any such entry restrictions for visitors or foreign residents in Korea.

  • Visit the  Embassy of Korea  website for current visa information. Please read our  Customs Information page .

COVID-19 Requirements :

  • There are no COVID-related entry requirements for U.S. citizens.
  • Travel regulations and restrictions are subject to change, sometimes with little notice. You should review the information available on your nearest Korean Embassy or Consulate’s webpage before traveling.

Safety and Security

Public Demonstrations:  Demonstrations and rallies are common in South Korea, particularly near the U.S. Embassy, Seoul City Hall, and areas surrounding military installations. You should avoid areas where demonstrations are taking place and exercise caution in the vicinity of any large gatherings, protests, or rallies. Even demonstrations intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational and escalate into violence.

North Korea (The Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, DPRK):  An armistice agreement, monitored by the United Nations, has maintained general peace on the Korean peninsula since 1953. Tensions occasionally flare up because of provocative acts by North Korea, including ballistic missile and nuclear tests and limited armed incursions into ROK-held territory. Some provocations have escalated into geographically limited skirmishes. South Korea routinely conducts military training exercises and civil defense drills. North Korea often issues strongly-worded and threatening messages, frequently in connection with these exercises. Please see our  Fact Sheet on North Korea .

Weather-related Events:  Heavy rains and flooding may occur during the June - August monsoon season or the May - November typhoon season. See general information about natural disaster preparedness at the U.S.  Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA)  website.

Enroll in the  Smart Traveler Enrollment Program  ( STEP ):  To receive security messages by email and make it easier to locate you in an emergency, register in STEP.

If the Embassy becomes aware of any specific and credible threat to the safety and security of U.S. citizens, we will inform you through our website, social media, and email.

Crime:  For most visitors, South Korea remains a very safe country. Common crimes occur more frequently in major metropolitan areas, tourist sites, and crowded markets.

  • Take routine safety precautions.
  • Pay attention to your surroundings.
  • Report any concerns to local police.

Violent crime is not common; however, remain vigilant:

  • Exercise caution in crowded entertainment, nightlife, and shopping districts.
  • If traveling at night, consider traveling in groups.
  • Use legitimate taxis or public transportation only.

Victims of Crime:  Call 112 for emergency assistance or to report a crime to local authorities. Call 02-397-4114 to contact the U.S. Embassy. We can:

  • Help you find appropriate medical care;
  • Assist you in reporting a crime to police;
  • Contact relatives or friends on your behalf;
  • Explain Korean judicial procedures in general terms;
  • Provide an emergency loan for repatriation to the United States and/or limited medical support in cases of destitution;
  • Help you find accommodations and flight arrangements to the United States;
  • Replace a lost or stolen passport.

Sexual Assault:   The Embassy regularly receives reports of sexual assault from U.S. citizens. Most cases involved young women assaulted by acquaintances they met on social media, dating, or messaging apps. Alcohol is often involved, and Korea’s low overall crime can create a false sense of security.  Specialized hospital units and police are available in South Korea to assist victims, however services in English and responsiveness to the crime are not always consistent. In general, sex crimes are not punished as harshly in South Korea as in the United States and the road to prosecution is a challenging one for victims.

Domestic Violence:  Victim’s assistance resources or battered women’s shelters exist in Seoul and other urban areas but may be limited in rural areas. Most are government administered and require a police referral. Call 112 for emergency assistance or 1366 to reach Korea’s 24-hour domestic violence hotline. Victims may also contact the Embassy, tel. (+82) 2-397-4114.

Lost or Stolen Passports:  If your passport is stolen, file a report at the nearest police station.

Don't buy counterfeit and pirated goods, even if widely available.  It is against South Korean law to purchase these goods and against U.S. law to bring them into the United States. The  Computer Crime and Intellectual Property Division in the U.S. Department of Justice  has more information.

Avoid fraud and scams:  See  Department of State  and  FBI  websites for more information.

Tourism:  The tourism industry is generally regulated and rules with regard to best practices and safety inspections are regularly enforced. Hazardous areas/activities are identified with appropriate signage and professional staff is typically on hand in support of organized activities. In the event of an injury, appropriate medical treatment is widely available throughout the country. Outside of a major metropolitan center, it may take more time for first responders and medical professionals to stabilize a patient and provide life-saving assistance. U.S. citizens are encouraged to purchase medical evacuation insurance. See our webpage for more information on  insurance providers for overseas coverage .

Local Laws & Special Circumstances

Criminal Penalties:  While in Korea, you are subject to local laws. If you violate Korean laws, you may be expelled, arrested, or imprisoned. Be aware that:

  • Immigration violations can lead to arrest, fines, and deportation.
  • There is little tolerance for illegal drugs.
  • If you mail illegal drugs to/ from Korea, you will be prosecuted.
  • Commercial disputes may lead to criminal charges being filed under local laws.

Be aware that some crimes are prosecutable in the United States, regardless of local law. For examples, see our website on  crimes against minors abroad  and the  Department of Justice  website.

Arrest Notification:  If you are arrested or detained, ask officials to notify the Embassy. See our  webpage  for further information.

SPECIAL CIRCUMSTANCES

Dual Nationality and Military Conscription:  Dual national males (including U.S. service members) may be subject to compulsory military service. If you have family ties to South Korea, consult the nearest Korean Embassy or Consulate or the  Korean Military Manpower Administration  regarding potential citizenship obligations  before entering South Korea .

Passport Seizures and Exit Bans:  If you are involved in a criminal investigation or commercial dispute, authorities may seize your passport and/or block your departure. While we may reissue a passport, we cannot lift an exit ban.

Exit Permits:  Exit permits are not generally required. However, if a parent requests a travel restriction on his/her child, Korean authorities may prevent that child from departing even when traveling with the other parent. As of June 1, 2020, foreigners who are long-term residents of the ROK are required to obtain a re-entry permit four business days prior to departure from Korea. The permits are available online through an e-application at the  www.hikorea.go.kr  website.

International Child Abduction:  See our website for information related to the  prevention of international child abduction .

Working in South Korea:  If working, including teaching or modeling, you must enter with the appropriate work visa. It is not possible to change your visa status without leaving the country. If you begin work without the appropriate visa, you may be arrested, fined, and/or deported. If you are working without a valid work permit and get into a contractual dispute with your employer, you have little legal recourse.

Students:  See our  Students Abroad  page and  FBI travel tips .

Women Travelers:  See our travel tips for  Women Travelers .

ROK National Security Law:  Authorities may detain, arrest, and imprison persons believed to have committed acts intended to endanger the “security of the state,” including statements deemed to praise the political system and/or officials of the DPRK.

Customs Regulations: There is strict enforcement of regulations on importing and exporting items such as firearms, narcotics and prescription drugs, non-prescription health supplements, radio equipment, and gold. Importation of materials deemed to be obscene, subversive, or harmful to the public peace is also restricted.

  • Amphetamines are illegal in Korea. Do not bring amphetamines or other prescription narcotics into the country without obtaining advance permission in writing from the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety. See the  U.S. Embassy Seoul, Health Information page .
  • Traveling with Pets: See  Korea’s Animal and Plant Quarantine Agency  website.

See the  Korean Customs Regulations website for complete information.

LGBTI Travelers:  Consensual same-sex sexual activity is not criminalized. Korea is a conservative country in regards to LGBTI issues. However, there are an increasing number of LGBTI-oriented clubs, festivals and NGOs advocating for LGBTI issues. The ROK National Human Rights Commission Act prohibits discrimination against individuals because of their sexual orientation, but there are no laws specifying punishment for persons found to have discriminated on this basis. Same-sex marriages are not recognized. Korean citizens can legally change their gender identity.

See   our  LGBTI Travel Information  page and section 6 of the  Department of State's Human Rights report  for further details.

Mobility Issues:  Korean law mandates access to transportation, communication, and public buildings. Cross walks typically have audio and visual signals. Older buildings and streets are generally less accessible than modern ones. Metro cars and buses in Seoul offer priority seating for the disabled and most metro stations have elevators. Metro platforms include Korean Braille information. Contact individual bus companies and subway associations for specific information. Foreign residents are eligible for disability assistance from local ward offices; assistance varies by ward.

Quality of Care : Western-style medical facilities are available in most large cities. However, not all doctors and staff, are proficient in English. A  list of hospitals  and medical specialists who speak English is available on our website. For emergency ambulance service dial 119. Ambulance services are widely available. For information on medical evacuation from South Korea, please see the State Department’s brochure on  Air Ambulance/MedEvac/Medical Escort Providers .

We do not pay medical bills.  Be aware that U.S. Medicare does not apply overseas. Verify your health insurance coverage before traveling overseas. See our webpage for information on  insurance providers for overseas coverage . In most cases, health care providers will require payment in advance of treatment or will not release a patient until hospital bills are paid. We strongly recommend supplemental insurance to include coverage for medical evacuation.

Medication:  Carry prescription medication in original packaging, along with your doctor’s prescription. Most prescription medications, except psychotropic types, can be obtained at Korean pharmacies (brand names often differ). Local pharmacies will require a prescription from a Korean doctor.

Travel and Transportation

Road Conditions and Safety:  Roads are well-paved, traffic signals functional, and most drivers comply with basic traffic laws. South Korea has a significantly higher traffic fatality rate than the United States. Causes of accidents include excessive speed, frequent lane changes without signaling, running red lights, aggressive bus drivers, and weaving motorcyclists. It is recommended that you photo document any traffic accidents.

Be aware that motorcyclists may drive on sidewalks, and drivers do not always yield to pedestrians in marked crosswalks.

Traffic Laws include:

  • International driving permit (or ROK license) is required for all drivers.
  • Left-hand turns prohibited except with green arrow.
  • Seat belts and car seats are mandatory.
  • Motorcycle passengers must wear helmets.
  • Automobile drivers are presumed to have some fault in accidents involving pedestrians.
  • Expect long waits at police stations while police investigate any incidents.
  • Police may take your passport or detain you during an investigation.
  • Even if negligence is not proven, criminal charges may be filed.
  • Blood-alcohol content of 0.03% or higher is considered legally intoxicated.
  • Police regularly set up DUI checkpoints. Drivers are required to submit to breathalyzer tests; refusal can result in cancellation of your license.

For information about driver's permits, vehicle inspection, road tax, and mandatory insurance, refer to our  Road Safety page . You may also visit the  Korea Tourism Organization (KTO) website.

AVIATION SAFETY OVERSIGHT:  The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has assessed the Government of the Republic of Korea's Civil Aviation Authority as being in compliance with International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) aviation safety standards for oversight of the ROK's air carrier operations. Further information may be found on the  FAA's Safety Assessment Page .

Maritime Travel:  Mariners planning travel to South Korea should check for U.S. maritime advisories and alerts at the U.S. Department of Transportation’s  Maritime Security Communications with Industry Web Portal . Information may also be posted to the  U.S. Coast Guard homeport website  and as a broadcast warning on the  National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency’s website .

Ailing pope to embark on Asia trip, his longest ever, in September

By Alvise Armellini

VATICAN CITY (Reuters) -Pope Francis will travel to Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, Timor-Leste and Singapore from Sept. 2-13, the Vatican said on Friday, announcing his first overseas trip of the year and the longest of his 11-year papacy.

The Asia trip has been on the papal agenda for some time, but there had been doubts on whether the 87-year-old pontiff would embark on it given his increasing frailty, with a record of skipping engagements due to health problems.

His last international journey was a two-day stay in Marseille, France in September. In November, he pulled out of a trip to the COP28 climate conference in Dubai because of a lung inflammation.

Francis is now scheduled to be in Jakarta between Sept. 3-6, Port Moresby and Vanimo between Sept. 6-9, Dili Sept. 9-11 and Singapore Sept. 11-13, his spokesman said in a statement.

Vietnam, which had been suggested by the pope and Vatican officials as a possible further destination during the nearly two-week long Asia trip, was not mentioned.

In recent months, the pope has been suffering on and off from what have been described as a cold, bronchitis and influenza, and he needs a wheelchair or a cane to move around due to a knee ailment.

His agenda this year also foresees Italian day trips to Venice on Apr. 28, Verona on May 18 and Trieste on July 7, and a visit to Belgium whose dates have not been confirmed, but expected in the second half of September.

The Argentine pope, the first from the so-called Global South, has made reaching out to Asia one of the priorities of his pontificate, during which the Vatican has struck a historic, yet contested, deal with China on bishop appointments.

Indonesia is the world's most populous Muslim nation and its 8 million Catholics represent about 3% of the total population. Timor-Leste, along with the Philippines, are Asia's only predominantly Catholic countries.

In Singapore, Catholics comprise about 7% of residents aged 15 or above, according to a 2020 census, while in Papua New Guinea about 26% of the population are Catholics, according to a religious freedom report by the U.S. State Department.
