Trip - movie review.

“We are therapists.  Nuts are our specialty.”

This is what despair looks like.  It is cold and hollow, freezing its victims to the very core of their being.  For one mother, it is her daughter’s unnatural suicide which invites this unwelcome visitor in, and she can’t seem to shake its grip.  No bottle.  No pill.  No tear is ever enough to escape the feeling of dread and aloneness in the wake of her daughter killing herself.

Welcome to the Trip .  This movie won’t soon be forgotten.  With heavy themes and a stand-out performance from Last Girl Standing ’s Akasha Villalobos as Ally, the grieving mother, Trip is definitely worth checking out.

Desperate for answers to why Samantha ( Jill Young ) gouged out her own eyeballs, Ally finds herself unable to cope or even return to work.  While her clients are being farmed out to others, she sits alone in her house crying her eyes out.  But an adventurous therapist, Jan Rollins ( Peggy Schott ), has a better idea for Ally.

With the help of a hallucinogenic drug - in the form of tea - Ally can see her daughter again. But is she brave enough to walk through that door?  Because, once it is opened, the door can never be closed again.  

Memories aren’t the only thing wandering these dark nightmarish halls.  Much to the chagrin of Michael ( Major Dodge ), Ally’s husband.  She’s gone, he yells at her.  Yet, still Ally pursues the ghosts she sees in and around the house.  All of them - even the frightening ones wearing masks, but just what is actually happening is anybody’s guess.  

From writer/director Neil McCay and starring “Chucky” star Björgvin Arnarson, Trip is an independent horror film that hits a confident stride in spite of its budgetary limitations and proves to be unsettling, thanks to a great sound design, a solid handling of grief, and an assortment of ghostly images which often had the hair on the back of my neck rising in response to their flickering mannerisms.  They are solidly put together and offer a creative way to handle a microbudget.  

Ally’s search for answers is going to lead her straight into a web of mystery as the same things that haunted her daughter start to fill her own head.  Just what is going on with these identical experiences?  

Sorrow and despair are the villains in the frightening Trip , on Terror Films AVOD Channel Friday, May 13th before a wide digital release on Friday May 20.  While it might be made for the indie-going crowd out there, this one packs a lot of solid scares along the way.

A 'Girls Trip' Sequel is "Underway" — Here's Everything We Know About 'Girls Trip 2'

What’s a good movie to watch during a girls' night? Girls Trip , of course! The 2017 title stars four female friends — Sasha (Queen Latifah), Ryan ( Regina Hall) , Lisa ( Jada Pinkett Smith ), and Dina ( Tiffany Haddish ) — who are collectively known as the Flossy Posse.

The fictional friends have known each other since childhood, but unfortunately, they drifted apart as they got older.

However, they reunite to travel to New Orleans together for the annual Essence Festival — and let's just say that their bond is stronger than ever after a few hilarious and drunken shenanigans. Think of the flick as an all-female version of The Hangover .

But as we're sure you already know, The Hangover was given a second and third installment. So, will Girls Trip ever get a sequel? Here’s what we know so far.

Will 'Girls Trip' ever have a sequel?

Yes. Girls Trip 2 is happening! Girls Trip producer Will Packer announced the exciting news on Good Morning America on Jan. 21, 2022.

"Can't we all use a post-pandemic trip, my friend?" he posed to host Michael Strahan during the broadcast. Will continued: "I think that the time is actually right, and this is something that I will tell you and break right now at GMA : the Girls Trip 2 sequel, we are underway."

He further shared that "the ladies are in" and he has already spoken with the movie's director.

While details continue to be ironed out, Will noted that this upcoming sequel will make light of current times, as this will be the Flossy Posse's first trip together post-pandemic. Which, if you ask us, already makes it sound like it will be wilder than the original.

Speaking of the pandemic, Tiffany Haddish revealed to HuffPost in March 2020 (aka the early aughts of COVID-19) that she and her Girls Trip co-stars caught up with each other on Zoom. But what started as a mini-reunion quickly turned into a sequel brainstorming session.

Which wasn't a surprise given that Queen Latifah had told People in May 2019 that the girls of Girls Trip were game for a sequel. "Everybody's in, Everybody's down for No. 2 … so we're just waiting for a script,'" she said, while teasing some potential destinations for sequel. "I've been throwing Rio [de Janeiro] from the beginning … definitely down with South Africa too," she revealed.

Girls Trip , which turns five this summer, was written by Black-ish creator Kenya Barris and Tracy Oliver, who both co-created the story with Erica Rivinoja. Surprisingly enough, it was based on an actual experience that Tracy and Erica had.

The film earned itself a 92 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes and received a number of awards since its release, including two Black Reel Awards, two NAACP Image Awards, and an MTV Movie & TV Award.

When is the 'Girls Trip 2' release date?

It is unknown when Girls Trip 2 will be released. However, given that it was announced in early 2022, there's a good chance it won't be ready until later this year or sometime in 2023.

A Girls Trip Sequel Is Finally Happening

And the crew is headed to Ghana!

The Girls Trip crew is back together again.

"It's officially happening. I can say that," Oliver shared during the panel discussion for her Prime Video series, Harlem , per Variety . "[Producer Will Packer] might kill me, [but] we're looking to set it in Ghana."

Though Oliver didn't confirm what exactly is sending the foursome abroad, Harlem actress Shoniqua Shandai offered a hint, squealing, "Afrochella!" One of the country's most popular international music festivals, the event has enlisted massive global musicians such as Burna Boy, Stonebwoy, and Shatte Wale.

In the original Girls Trip , the women head to New Orleans for the city's famous Essence Fest, with cameos from Diddy, Ne-Yo, and New Edition.

The first film was a box-office hit and grossed more than $140 million globally on just a $16 million budget. Malcolm D. Lee directed the comedy, while it was produced by Packer and co-written by Oliver and Kenya Barris ( Blackish, #BlackAF, You People ).

The core cast has yet to comment on the sequel news, but watch this space for more updates as they come.

The low-key king of the modern survival-horror movie, Alexandre Aja — who’s made movies like Crawl , Oxygen , and The Hills Have Eyes — is back with a new film staring Halle Berry. The first trailer for Never Let Go was released on Thursday, and the movie already looks like a terrifying addition to Aja’s impressive canon of people trying to survive the very bad things that are happening to them.

Never Let Go stars Berry as a mother of two twin boys. The whole family lives in the woods, way off the grid, with Berry insisting that they have to stay safe from the evil spirits that surround their cabin. One day, however, one of the boys starts to wonder if these spirits are real and sets out to discover the truth, only to get stranded in the woods, with his mother desperately trying to save him.

The trailer feels like a mix of M. Night Shyamalan ’s The Village and John Krasinski’s A Quiet Place , with all the tension that combination implies. Berry’s character leads her kids into the woods, a rope tying them all together so no one gets lost, making for a pretty haunting image, and that’s not including the strange hands that reach out to grab the characters every now and then.

Along with Berry, the movie will also star Anthony B. Jenkins and Percy Daggs IV as her two sons, as well as Matthew Kevin Anderson as “The Stranger” and Stephanie Lavigne, whose character is simply called “The Evil.”

Never Let Go is set to be released in theaters on Sept. 27.

Drop Release Date Confirmed for Blumhouse Thriller

Blumhouse has set the release date for its upcoming thriller Drop , which will star Violett Beane and Meghan Fahy in the Christopher Landon-directed project.

According to Deadline , the film, which was just announced earlier this year, will debut in theaters on Friday, April 11, 2025. Alongside Bean and Fahy, Drop will also star newcomer Jacob Robinson, Ed Weeks, and Brandon Sklenar.

Currently, not much is known about the project, other than the fact that the film is being described as “a fast-paced thriller.”

Jillian Jacobs and Chris Roach wrote the script for Drop. Michael Bay, Jason Blum, Brad Fuller, and Cameron Fuller will produce the movie, while Sam Lerner will serve as an executive producer. Blumhouse and Platinum Dunes have collaborated on The Purge franchise. The movie will be distributed by Universal when it released.

Blumhouse continues to set its 2025 calendar

Alongside the news of Drop, Blumhouse also set dates for many of its more highly anticipated projects planning to release next year. The studio announced that The Woman in the Yard , an upcoming film starring Danielle Deadwyler, would release on March 28, 2025.

Elsewhere, Blumhouse also delayed the release date for the M3GAN sequel again , while confirming a release date for the Five Night’s at Freddy sequel that’s in the works. The Black Phone 2, which is also in development, has seen its release date shifted back from June to October 2025 as well.

Howard also broke down how he balanced the original movie with making something new and why they wanted to continue the story after Chapter 1 instead of the usual time jump or even new casts with horror sequels.

Renny Harlin Explains The "Guiding Light" For The Strangers Chapter 1

The Strangers: Chapter 1 is largely inspired by the hit 2008 movie, but with a new twist that will further explore this world. This movie sets up a sequel that will follow the characters from the first movie, but unlike other horror franchises like Scream or Halloween , this won't take place years after the events of The Strangers: Chapter 1 .

Renny Harlin: That's the premise of our movie, which is really this giant four and a half hour movie broken into these three chapters. The premise is really in the first movie that takes its idea from the original, The Strangers, which is that it's a home invasion movie. What was brilliant about it was that it is random. That these people just show up. There's no rhyme or reason. They are just sadistically playing cat and mouse with these victims and ultimately just kill them and walk away. We all are accustomed to expecting that everything is explained, and there's a nice little end to every story. And there that's why it was so powerful because it showed the randomness of life. We wanted to explore these certain themes of, what is this all about? What makes these killers stick? What happens to the victims? If you survive this, then what would happen to you next day and the day after that? Not to do a sequel in a traditional sense where it's like now it's two years later and we are somewhere else and something else is happening to somebody else. But really sticking with our protagonist and seeing the physical and psychological damage in them, that was our premise and guiding light. Again, the important thing was the reality. So it never starts feeling like a movie movie, but it's real life and that we don't need start telling like, Oh, the strangers came from here and they did it because of this. We'd rather, by the end of the third movie, we'd rather leave the audience again with a bunch of unanswered questions. We'll answer some. We felt like, for example, who is Tamara? We wanted to explain that so that the audience has something that they get in that sense, but not at all start explaining everything. Who's who and why.

How The Strangers: Chapter 1 Pays Homage To The Original While Creating A New Story

The Strangers: Chapter 1 will pay homage to the 2008 classic, taking inspiration from certain key moments and elements of the original. However, Harlin also brought his own spin to the story, answering questions that have long remained a mystery while still bringing the terror of randomness and anonymity to the forefront.

Renny Harlin: We really felt like the original film is such a classic, we want to pay homage to it. This is called The Strangers so it's not like we're just going to go on our own ego trip and do something completely different. The premise is the home invasion with a young couple in a house, but then we go in new directions from there. So I felt, as a fan of the original film, I felt like it was really crucial to have certain markers, certain like tent poles or touchstones from the original film that you feel like, Okay, I get it. It's that world. It's those themes. It's that feeling of tension, dread and so on. It's the strangers, it's the mass killers. But at the same time, I wanted the film also to feel original and to sort of develop same scenarios, such as somebody knocks on door and says is Tamara here? Or that you lock your windows and doors and you're inside the house only to realize that the perpetrators are also inside the house. So those are the kind of really, really key things that I think are important to experience in the same fashion as in the original film, but then develop new scenes.
