At the beginning of each semester, undergraduate students have a chance to tour one of Yale's most iconic buildings: Sterling Memorial Library.

These one-hour tours explore library study spaces and the book stacks, a 15-story tower that holds close to 4 million books. You will also learn about the building's history (hint: it's not as old as you might think).

Group tours.

In order to provide the best visitor experience for all who enter the Beinecke Library, and in keeping with the policy and practice of the Yale University Library, group tours must be Yale-led tours.

The Beinecke Library offers introductory tours, open to all individuals, on Saturdays at 1:30 pm and at 3 pm, led by library staff. Check the library’s calendar for more information.

The Beinecke Library occasionally and on a very limited basis can arrange tours for schools, civic and community organizations, and similar organized groups of the building and exhibitions, led by library staff. Please note that we require at least three weeks’ notice for these tours specific to the Beinecke Library itself. To make a request for a tour please email  beinecke.library@yale.edu  with the subject line “Tour request” and include your name, the name of your group, the number of visitors, and your requested tour date(s). Submitting a request for a tour is not confirmation of your reservation. Your tour is not confirmed until you have received a formal e-mail to that effect from the library. Not all requests can be fulfilled.

Such occasional and limited group tour services are designated for schools, civic and community organizations. Individuals and families are welcome for self-guided tours of the exhibition hall. An introductory information sheet about the library’s history, architecture, and collections is available at the reception desk. No reservation or registration is required for individual walk-in visits.

Alexandra Forsterling

It was a dream week for Alexandra Försterling as she won the 2024 Amundi German Masters after a dramatic playoff at Golf & Country Club Seddiner See.

The Berlin native sunk her birdie putt on the second playoff hole to defeat close friend Emma Spitz and secure her fourth LET title, which have all come in her last 11 starts. Having not played on the LET since her victory in Tampa, it also means Försterling has now won in her last two starts on the LET in 2024.

“I am honestly completely speechless,” said the German star. “After I saw the putt drop, I was like oh my god. I would never have expected it. It really feels great. It honestly feels like a dream, I just never expected it, and it feels so amazing!”

The final round saw an intense battle with Försterling and Austria’s Spitz going head-to-head on the golf course as they started the day as joint-leaders on seven-under-par. It was the German who went ahead with a birdie on the second, but then Spitz rolled in back-to-back birdies on holes three and four, while Försterling made a bogey on the fourth.

The momentum swung back towards the German with birdies on six, seven, 13 and 14 but Spitz wasn’t finished yet. She also made a birdie on 13 and followed that up with a birdie on 16 before nearly making an ace on the 17th leaving her a tap-in birdie.

As the duo headed down the last, Spitz had a one-shot lead but Försterling stiffed her second shot to leave a tap-in birdie of her own and have the scores level at 12-under-par after 72 holes. The friends then headed back to the 18th and they both made birdies on the first playoff hole before Försterling rolled in her birdie on the second playoff hole to become the first German to win on home soil on the LET.

“I hit it to tap-in birdie on 18 which was nice,” Försterling explained. “It was such a great battle. Emma hit some beautiful shots, the one on 17 was really crazy and left me speechless. I tried to do the same on 18 and it worked. Even in the playoff, we hit so many nice shots and hit it so close to the pin. It was amazing.

“It was still friendly, we’re such good friends and playing against her was really nice. It’s tough to describe. I know how hard she works, and I really see this is coming in a good way for her. It was a lot of fun.”

It was a great final day for Spitz who went bogey-free and came close to securing her maiden LET title. The Austrian explained: “It’s been a crazy day. It’s been amazing and of course, I would have loved to win. It’s been incredible and this is where I want to be, and I really hope that I can get that win soon.

“I’m really proud of how I handled myself coming down the stretch, in the past I have struggled a little bit in final rounds and to play like this especially at the end, I’m really happy about it. At the beginning of the week, Alex and I were joking about playing in the final group together. To then play in a playoff is crazy, if we were to make a movie out of it, we couldn’t make it any better.

“She is an incredible player and I know that under pressure she has been insane over the last months. I know that if I wanted to win it had to be my best and it was very close to my best, but still not enough. I feel very good about it, it’s emotional but I’m still happy.

“So many of the girls that I played in college with like Rose [Zhang], Linn [Grant] and Maja [Stark] and Alex. I have seen them win and I wouldn’t say I had lost confidence, but I was struggling a little bit, and it was not always easy. This shows me that I can do the same.”

England’s Gabriella Cowley had another excellent day shooting a six-under 66 to finish in outright third place on 10-under-par.

“I played great today and I played great yesterday,” said Cowley. “I gave myself a good chance of winning, I hit some really good putts that just didn’t go in. It’s tough, but the way that I’ve hit the ball especially after struggling a lot last week in Korea, to turn that around and to have my dad here. He really helped me this week to be honest, we grinded on Tuesday just to get the swing back to where we wanted it.

“I played well all four days, the second day was just tough in the wind. I didn’t hole too many putts the first two days, but I holed some great putts over the weekend. I gave myself a great chance and have come up close again.”

Germany’s Laura Fünfstück produced the round of the day firing a 64 (-8) to finish in a tie for fourth place alongside Australia’s Kirsten Rudgeley, who carded a 65 (-7).England’s Eleanor Givens and Slovenia’s Ana Belac ended the week in a tie for sixth place on seven-under-par. Sweden’s Johanna Gustavsson, France’s Nastasia Nadaud and Ireland’s Lauren Walsh rounded out the top 10 in a share of eighth place on six-under-par.

In the LET Order of Merit, Försterling moves up to second place and has 1,175.42 points just 46.73 points leader Bronte Law. England’s Cowley and Austria’s Spitz have also jumped into the top 10 in the standings with Cowley in eighth with 628 points and Spitz in 10th with 494.85 points.

After tomorrow’s U.S. Women’s Open Qualifier, next up for the LET is the Jabra Ladies Open which will take place 23-25 May at Evian Resort Golf Club.

MASSTC Staff Complete 4th Stop on Waste No Water Library Tour

In April, the Massachusetts Alternative Septic System Test Center (MASSTC) launched their first  Waste No Water   Library Tour , a 10+ library series to engage the public in over 10 Cape towns, focusing on the wastewater successes and challenges each town faces.

sterling library tour

Each stop on the tour offers a showing of the recent  Scientific American  documentary  Yellow Tide  that features MASSTC’s efforts. Participants include local boards of health, pond groups, homeowners, water advocates, realtors, landscape companies and members of the public interested in the topic of wastewater, innovative/alternative septic systems and urine diversion.

This week, Massachusetts Alternative Septic System Test Center staff completed their 4th stop on their Waste No Water Library Tour at the Wellfleet Public Library !

One attendee asked how people are expected to handle the increased maintenance needs of an innovative/alternative system when they barely maintain current Title V septic system maintenance and routine pump-outs. “Maintenance will always be key,” said MASSTC Director Brian Baumgaertel. “Which means, we all need to step up to the plate and take better care of our septic systems NOW with the majority of the Cape nowhere near being sewered. Learning habits now will make us better stewards of our future systems.”

sterling library tour

Another attendee inquired about how we can better support residents who are taking part in provisional projects (like Shubael Pond or the Falmouth urine diversion project). If they’re doing the legwork and carrying the financial responsibility required to get the projects underway, how can we help? How can we take more risk away from them? In response, it was suggested that perhaps looking at large bids as a town might lower costs significantly.

Finally, Wellfleet’s Board of Health was in attendance and provided a handout on the Wellfleet Targeted Watershed Management Plan (T.W.M.P) . Wellfleet has designed an entire landing page on all things septic from maps to new regulations and how they will impact residents.

2024 Preakness Stakes date and time: When is the race, how to watch, odds, horses and weather

Kentucky Derby winner and Preakness Stakes entrant Mystik Dan leaves the track after a workout ahead of the 149th running of the Preakness Stakes horse race at Pimlico Race Course, Thursday, May 16, 2024, in Baltimore. (AP Photo/Julio Cortez)

The 2024 Preakness Stakes (Saturday, May 18 on NBC/Peacock) will be the 149th running of the annual horse race in Baltimore. It’s the yearly second leg of horse racing’s Triple Crown pursuit. Mystik Dan will be running in this year’s Preakness after some doubt that he would run in the race due to the short turn around between the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness.

Here’s everything you need to know about the 2024 Preakness Stakes.

What is the Preakness Stakes?

The Preakness Stakes is the second race in the Triple Crown series and is running for the 149th time this year. A blanket of yellow flowers is draped on the winner each year and the weather vane at Pimlico is painted with the silk’s colors immediately after a winner is declared. The field is much smaller than the 20 horses that start the Kentucky Derby each year. This year, only eight horses will run in the Preakness. Only horses that are three years old are eligible to race in the Preakness Stakes, and it is open to both male and female horses. Swiss Skydiver, a filly, won the Preakness Stakes in 2020 and Rachel Alexandra won in 2009.

Everything you need to know about the horses running the Preakness on Saturday

When is the 2024 Preakness Stakes?

The 2024 Preakness Stakes will be held on Saturday, May 18, 2024, at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore.

What horses are in the 2024 Preakness Stakes and their odds?

  • Mugatu – 20-1
  • Uncle Heavy – 7-1
  • Catching Freedom – 7-2
  • Muth – Scratched
  • Mystik Dan – 5-2
  • Seize the Grey – 8-1
  • Just Steel – 9-1
  • Tuscan Gold – 7-2
  • Imagination – 9-2

What time does the 2024 Preakness Stakes start?

The post-time for the Preakness Stakes is set for 7:01 p.m. ET.

How long is the Preakness Stakes?

The race is 1 3/16 miles long. Secretariat owns the Preakness Stakes record at 1:53, although he wasn’t credited with the record until a 2012 meeting of the Maryland Racing Commission. Smarty Jones owns the record for margin of victory with a 11 1/2 length victory in 2004. Trainer Bob Baffert has won the Preakness Stakes eight times, most recently in 2023.

Who won the 2023 Preakness Stakes?

In 2023, National Treasure won the Preakness Stakes by a head over Blazing Sevens. National Treasure was 4-1 on the morning line odds. Mage, the 2023 Kentucky Derby winner, finished third.

What is the weather forecast for the 2024 Preakness Stakes?

The forecast for Saturday calls for a high of 66 degrees and a low of 58 degrees. The bigger news is there’s an 80 percent chance of rain on Saturday throughout the day with an accumulation of around half an inch.

How can I watch and stream the 2024 Preakness Stakes?

Television coverage for the 2024 Preakness Stakes starts at 4:30 p.m. ET on NBC. Preliminary coverage starts at 1:30 p.m. on CNBC. All coverage can also be streamed on Peacock.

Five long-standing traditions of the Kentucky Derby

Who is the favorite for the 2024 Preakness Stakes?

Mystik Dan is the 5-2 favorite for the 2024 Preakness Stakes. Muth, who is trained by Bob Baffert, was the morning line favorite when the post positions were drawn on Monday evening, but Muth scratched due to a high-fever.

Catching Freedom (6-1) and Imagination (6-1) have the second best odds.

What does morning line mean?

It is the first set of odds, released after the post positions were announced. Horse racing is parimutuel betting, meaning you can buy a ticket on the horse you want to win (or place or show, etc) but the odds are going to fluctuate up until the start of the race and eventually land on final odds as the horses go off, based on what everyone else is betting. In regular sports betting, you can buy a ticket at 5-to-1 odds and even if it’s down to 2-to-1 by the start of the game, your bet will pay out at 5-to-1. In horse racing, those 5-to-1 odds moving to 2-to-1 means you get stuck with those 2-to-1 odds like everyone else, no matter when the ticket was purchased (but, on the bright side, the odds can always go in the other direction, too).

What is the Black-Eyed Susan Stakes?

The Black-Eyed Susan Stakes is held on the Friday before the Preakness at Pimlico. It puts the best 3-year-old fillies against each other. The event is a Grade II race and offers $300,000 purse. It will stream starting at 4:30 p.m. ET Friday on Peacock.

How does betting on the Preakness Stakes work?

There are many different ways to bet on the Preakness Stakes, and it can be confusing to understand what an exacta, trifecta and superfecta are. It’s also confusing on how actually to place a bet on them.

The easiest way is to bet on the winner of the race. We explained all of the different types of horse racing bets here.

Ladies European Tour: Alexandra Forsterling wins Amundi German Masters after dramatic play-off

Alexandra Forsterling defeated Emma Spitz on the second extra play-off hole to claim a fourth Ladies European Tour win in 11 starts; Forsterling moves to second on the LET Order of Merit and enhances her hopes of Solheim Cup qualification

Sunday 19 May 2024 17:47, UK

Alexandra Forsterling claimed bragging rights over friend Emma Spitz to claim a dramatic play-off victory on home soil at the Amundi German Masters.

The pair went into the round tied for the lead at the Golf & Country Club Seddiner See and exchanged top spot on multiple occasions during a thrilling final round, where both carded five-under 67s to remain locked on 12 under.

Both players birdied the first extra play-off hole before Forsterling snatched the win with another birdie at the second additional hole, securing her a fourth Ladies European Tour title in her last 11 starts.

Victory follows her win at the Aramco Team Series event in Tampa in her last start, with Forsterling now moving to second in the Ladies European Tour order of merit and enhancing her hopes of qualifying for a Solheim Cup debut later this year.

How Forsterling won on home soil

Forsterling edged ahead with a birdie at the second but dropped a shot at the fourth, which moved Spitz two clear after back-to-back birdies from the third, only for the home favourite to pull back level with successive gains from the sixth.

Spitz had a one-shot lead until Forsterling stiffed her second shot at the last to leave a tap-in birdie of her own, with Forsterling going on to prevail in the play-off and become the first German to win an LET event on home soil.

Sherman Library & Gardens soiree spotlights its ‘Grow the Garden’ campaign

Like the plants and flowers that it houses, Sherman Library & Gardens announced its intention to grow with its “Grow the Garden” campaign — a $13-million endeavor to renovate and expand some of its facilities and establish its “front door” on Pacific Coast Highway.

In front of donors and supporters of the botanical garden Thursday night, Executive Director Scott LaFleur said the gardens are undergoing a “renaissance.”

The gardens were founded in 1966 by Arnold Haskell, who named them after his mentor, Moses Sherman. Haskell initially wanted an office close to his home and purchased a property that is now part of the gardens’ library and the adjoining property. That was expanded to the entire block by 1967, and the facilities were established between 1966 and 1974, according to Sherman Library & Gardens officials.

Guests attend the the "Grow the Gardens" campaign party.

“As the premier nonprofit cultural center of Newport [Beach], we strive every day to fulfill our mission to inspire and educate the community to have an appreciation of history, horticulture and the arts,” LeFleur said. “The education program continues to drive the Sherman Library & Gardens mission, providing people of all ages and backgrounds with an opportunity to engage and connect with nature and with each other and with the beauty of history.”

LaFleur said school field trips to the gardens are now up to 43 annually while drop-in tours have seen roughly 3,000 participants. About 10,000-plus visitors engaged with other programming at the venue.

LaFleur explained funds raised during the campaign will go toward establishing a space dedicated to Sherman’s educational programs in the central patio room. They will also facilitate new programs that will focus on the Pacific Southwest and finance the renovation of the tropical conservatory.

The proposed improvements will also include the relocation of the gardens’ restaurant to Pacific Coast Highway, the addition of a rooftop deck and the reinstatement of tea garden dining.

Executive Director Scott LaFleur introduces new plans for =Sherman Gardens botanical gardens.

But, most importantly, LaFleur said the “front door” to the gardens is needed to let both residents and visitors know where they are.

“How many of you have driven by countless times and never realized what was behind the wall? I can’t tell you how many times I’ve had someone tell me, ‘I’ve driven by or lived in town for 10, 20, 30 years and I didn’t know where to come in,” LaFleur said. “We’re going to change that.”

The gardens expect groundbreaking to occur in the summer of next year. LaFleur confirmed about $8.3 million of the $13 million goal has been raised.

“As [LaFleur] alluded to, [in] just 2½ years, our education department has [gotten] 20,000 people to participate in over 600 different educational opportunities. We call that a good start,” said Gary Pickett, the president of the Sherman Foundation. “We have big ambitions, but these big ambitions are going to need the help of the community.”
