CINCINNATI (WXIX) - Cincinnati Police are investigating a shooting that left two juveniles and a 68-year-old hospitalized Sunday afternoon.

Police responded to the 1600 block of Linn Street shortly after 5 p.m. for multiple calls about shootings near Stanley Rowe Towers, according to Lt. Terry Larkin from District 1.

Lt. Larkin said police located a 15-year-old, a 17-year-old and a 68-year-old suffering from gunshot wounds to their limbs.

Lt. Larkin also said that there were two shooting locations; one at a bus stop on Linn Street in front of Stanley Rowe Towers, and another location in a parking lot behind the complex.

UPDATE: TV morning shows were dominated by images this morning of the Los Angeles Police Department operation to dismantle a Pro-Palestinian encampment at UCLA .

This morning, officers in riot gear were lined up in front of an emptied Royce Quad, which was cleared overnight. Demonstrators were still lined up behind a barricade, but the encampment itself was a scene of downed tents and trash.

It was not immediately clear how many were arrested, but UCLA police had warned the demonstrators earlier that they would be detained if they refused to leave the encampment.

UCLA officials said all campus operations will be “limited” today and Friday.

Meanwhile, the board of the Pulitzer Prizes praised student journalists for their coverage of the protests, including those on the campus of Columbia University.

“As we gather to consider the nation’s finest and most courageous journalism, the Pulitzer Prize Board would like to recognize the tireless efforts of student journalists across our nation’s college campuses, who are covering protests and unrest in the face of great personal and academic risk. We would also like to acknowledge the extraordinary real-time reporting of student journalists at Columbia University, where the Pulitzer Prizes are housed, as the New York Police Department was called onto campus on Tuesday night. In the spirit of press freedom, these students worked to document a major national news event under difficult and dangerous circumstances and at risk of arrest.”

PREVIOUSLY: An unlawful assembly order has been given by law enforcement to a pro-Palestinian encampment at UCLA. The order sets the stage for a confrontation between entrenched protesters and officials if the encampment does not disperse.

The order today came after a violent attack on the encampment last night at UCLA.

The encampment has issued a call to the public to join them. Student supporters lined up arm in arm in an effort to prevent law enforcement from reaching the encampment.

Hundreds of pro-Palestine protesters are flowing into the driving lanes in front of Dickson Plaza at UCLA, chanting “From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free,” according to the Daily Bruin, UCLA’s campus newspaper.

UCLA officials say all campus operations will be “limited” tomorrow and Friday, and all normally in-person classes are “required to pivot to remote tomorrow and Friday.”

On Tuesday, UCLA saw a violent confrontation between pro-Israel counter-protesters and the pro-Palestinian encampment. The counter-protesters used fireworks on the encampment and brawls broke out. There were only a few UCLA police present and were overwhelmed.

It took three hours for California Highway Patrol officers and police from Los Angeles and other agencies to bring the situation under control.

Last week, police cleared an encampment at USC, arresting 90 people. However, the encampment returned over the weekend, and a tactical alert was issued by police. However, the encampment ended its occupation without incident and the alert was called off.

Police defend decision not to disclose accidental gunshot during Columbia protest response

The Associated Press

NEW YORK (AP) — New York City police officials on Friday defended their decision to initially keep quiet about a potentially dangerous accident that happened as officers cleared pro-Palestinian protesters from Columbia University this week when a sergeant accidentally fired his gun into a dark office.

The bullet, discharged as the officer transferred his gun to his left hand while trying to get into the locked room, crashed through a glass panel in a door and landed harmlessly on the floor. The office was vacant, so nobody was hit, police officials said at a news conference Friday.

Neither the city’s mayor, Eric Adams, nor any other official mentioned the accidental gunshot in news conferences or media interviews held since police cleared protesters from Columbia’s Hamilton Hall on Tuesday.

The department’s chief spokesperson, Deputy Commissioner of Public Information Tarik Sheppard, said Friday that he didn’t think it was particularly newsworthy because officers accidentally fire their guns about eight times a year and it rarely gets much attention.

“My goal here was not to just try and make a story,” Sheppard said. “I knew it would come up eventually because it always does. So there was no rush for us to talk about this.”

Asked whether the department would release body camera footage of the incident, Sheppard said no. The department has selectively released some body camera footage and video taken by department officials during the operation to clear protesters from the Columbia building, but requests for unedited footage have been refused.

The accidental discharge remained unknown to the public until it was reported by the news site The City on Thursday. The Manhattan district attorney’s office is investigating the incident, a spokesperson said.

The sergeant, who was not identified, was carrying a gun with flashlight attached as he and other officers searched Hamilton Hall for anyone who might be hiding, Assistant Chief Carlos Valdez, head of the NYPD emergency service unit, said at Friday’s news conference.

“During the course of this operation, while clearing an unoccupied vacant area of the building on the first floor, one ESU member, a sergeant, did unintentionally discharge one round from his firearm,” Valdez said.

Valdez said the accidental discharge occurred after police broke the glass panel of a locked office door in order to get inside the office and make sure no one was inside. The gun went off as the sergeant switched it from his right hand to his left hand in order to reach in through the broken window and unlock the door with his right hand, Valdez said.

The bullet landed on the floor of the office and struck no one, he said.

The following day, Adams, a Democrat and former police officer, praised the operation to clear Hamilton Hall, a site of protests and occupations since 1968.

“Just a tremendous job done by the men and women of the NYPD,” the mayor said at a briefing on Wednesday. “Such restraint, such precision.”

No mention was made of the unintentional gunshot.

Police in New York City do not generally inform the public about accidental gunshots unless a person is struck by gunfire.

Asked Friday why police had not informed the public about the Hamilton Hall incident, Sheppard said, “I didn’t make the decision that we wanted to address the accidental discharge at that time because we normally don’t address them.”

WEATHER ALERT

5 warnings and an advisory in effect for 15 regions in the area

Photos: mayor whitmire, police chief finner take aerial tour of kingwood flooding.

Michael Horton , Digital Content Producer , Houston, TX

As flood waters continue to swell throughout neighborhoods in Kingwood, Houston Mayor John Whitmire and Police Chief Troy Finner traveled by helicopter to get a first-hand view of the situation Saturday afternoon.

“Houston residents benefit when all levels of government work together,” Mayor Whitmire said in a statement. “Together, we will get through these challenges. Let’s go to work!”

In the statement, the Mayor’s Office said that the purpose of the helicopter tour was to give Houston’s elected leaders a greater perspective of the damage in Kingwood and the potential resources the community will need in the coming days.

“Mayor Whitmire is staying in touch with residents and first responders through every means possible. Furthermore, he is using his contacts to speak to Governor Abbott and Lt Governor Patrick and has had a great response from the Texas Division of Emergency Management,” an excerpt from the statement read.

May in Nashville kicks off with Morgan Wallen, an NHL playoffs game and more: Here's how many people to expect downtown

police 1979 tour

Unless you absolutely need to be in downtown Nashville Friday night, it might be best to avoid the area or make plans to get there really early.

The city is going to be inundated with people due to a number of big events happening in the downtown area, including the Nashville Predators vs the Vancouver Canucks game at Bridgestone Arena and the second night of Morgan Wallen's three night stint at Nissan Stadium , among others. Wallen's first night at Nissan Stadium drew a crowd of around 50,000 fans and even more are expected on Friday and Saturday.

Downtown saw a similar scenario back in 2023, when Taylor Swift brought her "Eras" tour to Music City on May 5, 6 and 7. That same weekend, comedian Trevor Noah appeared at the Ryman Auditorium, Beethoven Violin Concerto took place at the Schermerhorn Symphony Center and Disney's "Aladdin" was performed at the Tennessee Performing Arts Center.

During the entire weekend of May 5, there were about 884,00 people in Downtown Nashville, said Jeanette Barker, vice president of the Nashville Downtown Partnership . That figure includes residents and people who work in the area. Considering that this year's first weekend in May will include Game 6 in the first round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs, that figure is estimated to be close to 900,000 said Barker.

According to Metro Nashville, Bridgestone Arena's seating capacity for hockey games is 17,500. However, the attendance for the April 28 game exceeded capacity with a total of 17,590 fans in attendance, said Nashville Predators Communications Coordinator Katie Cafiero.

That's not counting those attending the city's viewing party at Music City Walk of Fame Park featuring games, food trucks and a large video screen for those who don't have game tickets to watch Game 6. The party is free and open to the public.

Also taking place on Friday is the Belmont University Commencement ceremony, in total the university has four ceremonies planned between May 3 and Saturday, May 4. 1,758 students will be graduating over the weekend. Each student was allotted 6 tickets, with some requesting additional tickets. Overall, the university is anticipating 11,000 people in attendance over the four ceremonies, said Julia Copeland, Belmont University director of public relations.

Metro Nashville police: 'Arrive extra early'

Metro Nashville police are encouraging even "the most seasoned Nashvillians" to plan ahead and arrive extra early, should they be attending any of events downtown on Friday.

The Woodland Street Bridge will close to vehicle traffic around 5 p.m. and will then be available to only pedestrians and WeGo buses, said MNPD in a news release. Those without a reserved parking pass at Nissan Stadium are encouraged to make a parking plan or take a rideshare service, said police.

Nashville Predators fans should expect very heavy traffic around Bridgestone Arena by late afternoon said MNPD, and are advised to arrive extra early to find parking. MNPD officers will be present at all four venues Friday night, (Nissan Stadium, Bridgestone Arena, Ryman Auditorium, and First Horizon Park) as well as downtown.

Major events happening in Nashville on Friday, May 3

  • Nashville Predators vs the Vancouver Canucks at Bridgestone Arena
  • Morgan Wallen's "One Night At A Time 2024" tour at Nissan Stadium
  • Belmont University commencement ceremony
  • Portugal. The Man at the Ryman Auditorium
  • Nashville Sounds vs. Norfolk Tides at First Horizon Park
  • Beethoven Violin Concerto at the Schermerhorn Symphony Center

No 'Taylor-gating': New Jersey authorities warn Swifties against tailgating at her concert

Never underestimate the determination of a Swiftie .

Devoted fans of Taylor Swift who weren't able to get tickets to her Eras Tour have resorted to tailgating outside the New Jersey stadium where Swift is performing this week.

The MetLife stadium where Swift is playing, along with state authorities, have already gotten involved. On Friday, MetLife released in a statement on social media stating fans will be barred from entering the stadium parking lot if they do not have a ticket to the concert.

New Jersey State Police echoed the sentiment on social media .

"Sorry Swifties – No Ticket, No Taylor-Gating," read their Instagram post. "Only patrons with concert tickets for the day of the event will be granted access to the parking lots. Tickets will not be sold at the stadium."

With ticket prices in the thousands and presales selling out quickly, fans are finding workarounds to see (or hear) Swift anyway.

Many are choosing to park at the nearby American Dream mall or catch a train before walking over to MetLife.

Longtime Swiftie Allison Ekeman and her 10-year-old daughter Kayleigh originally intended to sit in the MetLife stadium’s parking lot, but will now walk over from the mall. They will enjoy the Saturday show outside the stadium walls with a blanket to lay on while singing Swift’s top hits.

“I’m not willing to spend over a $1,000 on tickets, but I can stand outside for free,” Ekeman said.

Ekeman said other fans will likely be doing the same, as she saw on TikTok and other social media platforms including last weekend’s Philadelphia show. Andover Township native Stephanie Poli-Zilinski got the same idea after presales sold out and ticket prices went up in the thousands.

Since listening to Swift’s debut single “Tim McGraw,” Poli-Zilinski has been a devoted Swiftie and eventually brought her daughter Ainsley into the Taylor community as well. They plan to park at American Dream early from the comfort of their minivan.

MetLife experienced a sampling of the Taylor Swift mania to come this weekend with the merchandise store opening on May. 25. Fans started camping in line around 10 p.m. the night before and waited for hours doors to open at 10 a.m.
