Sarawak River Traditional Boat Cruise

Photo of Cyril Dason

It was a beautiful day and I decided to go on the Sarawak River Traditional Boat Cruise.  Such cruise is available on Malaysia Holiday packages .

The ride starts at the Kuching Waterfront and is quite popular among tourist.  Guest can expect to enjoy a calm ride along the Sarawak river on the boat ride.

I purposely wanted to go on the ride because I felt that as a local, I should know and experience the tourism products available in my home town.

ENHANCING YOUR VIEW OF KUCHING CITY

First of all, compared to the Sarawak River Cruise which utilizes the ship Equator, the Sarawak river traditional boat cruise uses a small traditional boat to bring guest for a ride along the Sarawak river.

The boat used for the traditional cruise is slightly bigger than the ones used for the penambang rides .

SARAWAK RIVER TRADITIONAL BOAT CRUISE

These traditional boat have been modified to allow guest to enjoy the scenery when the boats are cruising along the Sarawak river.

The route of the Sarawak River Traditional Boat Cruise is also shorter than the Sarawak River Cruise.  The  experience itself is significantly different.

This comes despite the person manning the ticketing counter claiming that the differences is only in the beverages offered on the Equator.

kuching waterfront river cruise

Going onto the boat itself gives some sort of excitement to those unfamiliar with boat rides.  The boat rocks from left to right when one enters it and balancing the boat is the task of every passenger.

I’m used to boat rides so it didn’t bother me as much.  Others I noticed were panicking the moment they realized the boat was shifting sideways.  They screamed a bit every time someone new went into the boat.

As the boatman started the engine, the boat cruised up the Sarawak river smoothly.

The view from the boat was indeed spectacular.  It was indeed eye-opening. It was one of those moments you realize you don’t really know your city that well.

kuching waterfront river cruise

The soft breeze gazed my face as the boat sailed past the Darul Hana Bridge, the Astana, Brooke Dockyard and many other landmarks I’ve only seen from land.  The view from the river was indeed different.

FINDING HIDDEN TERRITORY

Since all the views were rather different to me, I was busy snapping photos of the beautiful scenery.  I was so intrigue by he view that I only realized we had reached the end of our cruise up-river when the boat was making a u-turn.

kuching waterfront river cruise

The change of route was greeted by the soft amazing sunset of Kuching.  The sunset was simply mesmerizing as it reflected itself on the glittering shine of the Sarawak river.

Heading down-stream revealed the less explored (and less developed) side of Kuching.  Here large fishing boats were docked.

SARAWAK RIVER TRADITIONAL BOAT CRUISE

Fishermen, back from the days trip to sea can also be seen on these boats as some waved to us with smiles.

Our traditional boat ride passed by some high rise apartments and what seemed to be a forgotten waterfront, before the made a come about to the Malay village which was opposite the grand looking apartments.

kuching waterfront river cruise

It was here that the sounds of the Azan (a Muslim prayer) broke the silence of the boat engine as we continued to venture back to the jetty.

TICKET PRICES AND OTHER TOURS ABOUT THE SARAWAK RIVER TRADITIONAL BOAT CRUISE

A ride on the Sarawak river traditional boat cruise only cost RM19 per adult and RM9 per child (below 12 years of age).  All payment are in cash.

There’s three different boats in service for the cruise; the Orang Ulu boat, the Malay boat and the Iban Long boat. I took the Orang Ulu boat. It was by chance. You can wait for your preferred boat.

kuching waterfront river cruise

The ride takes about an hour to complete and it starts at 10AM.  The last cruise is at 6:30PM.  You can go directly to the Kuching Waterfront to get a ride.  Booking is not required unless you come in a huge group.  You can also consider an  all inclusive holidays to Asia if you intend to plan the cruise ahead.

Anyway, the cruise comes without any frills.  This means there’s no refreshments or food provided.  You only get the ride on this particular traditional boat cruise.

That said, if you are seeking something relaxing to do in Kuching, a ride on the Sarawak river traditional boat cruise may do just the trick.

I really did and certainly would recommend it to anyone going there.

Your photos are fantastic! The Sarawak Cruise looks like a great way to take in the beautiful surroundings.

Thanks for the compliment. I'd totally recommend the cruise to anyone going to Kuching. :)

This looks like a great way to take in the sights of Kuching.

I love how the cruise trip afforded me and others to see kampung/villages along the river whilst enjoying the sunset; something you can't see if you remain in the city centre.

I think it's really good to revisit places. Gives us another perspective of things, especially when a few years apart. Btw, great looking photos.

Oh yes! I love trips like these, a combination of walking down the memory lane and making new memories too.

Sounds like a fun time, and a great day. Love the orangutan street art!

Sure had a lovely day! And yes, that orang utan street art is quite popular. There was a queue of people behind me wanting to take photos of them! :)

Beautiful way to see Kuching. Also, I literally can't stop looking at this monkey street art piece. So cute.

Yup, definitely! I had wanted to take more photos of the street art around the area, some of them are quite interesting! Unfortunately time was not on my side.

This does remind me of Laos, especially the water shots, but then there are a few dead giveaways that this is a much different place, like the Orangutan in the street art and some of the infrastructures!

I haven't been to Laos, and would love to check it out too, one day!

belum pernah naik river cruise, just naik bot penambang je hehe.. dah berapa kali pergi Kuching pun masih tak bosan dengan area waterfront ni. boleh shopping kat main bazaar, layan sunset and tengok aktiviti seharian diorg

Haa! Tu la, mula tu sebelum pergi sana, ingatkan nak cuba naik bot penambang pergi seberang sungai tapi tak sempat sebab hotel agak jauh dari bandar. Kalau tak, malam2 mesti dah pergi lepak dekat Waterfront ni. :)

We have been to Malaysia a few times, but still haven't made it to Kuching! I need to go. Photos are beautiful

Ooh you totally should! It's one of my favourite cities in Malaysia!

Really do love the street art! They're incredibly talented!

Me too! I'm often amazed with some of the street arts that I've seen so far. How many times I wish I could have the same talent!

Love the street art like in Penang it seems that he is expanding and painting more places even singapore it's a lovely and smart way to decorate the streets, and the orang utan is so cute

Yes! And if I'm not mistaken, he's done some for Ipoh as well, another city north of KL.

kuching waterfront river cruise

Nice photo! Really enjoyed the sunset river cruise.... =D

Kan? Kena pergi sana semula semata2 nak berdating sambil layan sunset nih, haha! :) Thanks for the compliment, by the way!

Kuching Waterfront-Siniawan river cruise set to be eco-tourism booster

kuching waterfront river cruise

Bernard (second left) presents a souvenir to Henry at the event.

KUCHING (Feb 4): Sarawak may offer river cruise from Kuching Waterfront to Siniawan, Bau once a study on the Sarawak River navigation along the river route is complete and deemed safe for boat travels.

Deputy Minister of Transportation (Maritime and Riverine) Dato Henry Harry Jinep said this when met after the closing of the one-day workshop on Hazard Identification and Impact Review at a hotel here yesterday.

“We need to go to the ground to test the route from one waterfront to another. We need to study the natural attractions we have along the route as well as the obstacles we may face, especially the small boats,” he said.

“I think the studies on these are important – safe navigation and nature attractions. I have suggested sometime on Feb 23, we (the ministry together with Sarawak Rivers Board) to go on a boat cruise from Satok Bridge to Siniawan.

This route, he added, has already been included in the Bau Tourism Report, and a study on a tour package has been made.

When asked on the river pollution in Sarawak, he commented that it was not that bad, but with only household waste to worry about.

“We will slowly improve on this and will get NREB (Natural Resources and Environment Board) for help,” he said.

AJA Prima Sdn Bhd director Captain Bernard Idit, meanwhile said they might look into using hydrogen powered boats for this initiative and also to reduce river pollution.

Breaking news, real estate | 17-year-old dies in motorcycle crash in stamford, subscriber only, real estate | property of the week: a ‘rare’ historic home along the connecticut river is on market.

45 Main St., East Haddam45 Main St., East Haddam

Now, your dream can come true. An eight-room historic home and its cottage are for sale in East Haddam.

Nestled on almost an acre and a half, this quintessential New England Greek Revival-era home is a showstopper, inside and outside. The current owners have painstakingly restored and renovated all 2,372 square feet. They have constructed a separate detached cottage for entertaining family and friends, viewing the passing boats and immersing themselves in the natural beauty of the scenic river.

kuching waterfront river cruise

Owning a home along the Connecticut River is not an opportunity that comes along often. “It’s a rarity to have a property along the river,” says realtor Sacha Armstrong-Crockett, the listing agent. “It has been meticulously maintained. It is curated right out of a home design magazine.”

Built in 1850, the home has withstood the test of time thanks to widespread restorations, renovations and modern updates. The home offers a lovingly restored interior that retains original period details including hardwood floors, extensive millwork, high ceilings and a wood-burning fireplace.

“The owners did a beautiful job making sure everything flows well,” Armstrong-Crockett points out. “The craftsmanship, the millwork, the flooring, and then you add in these views.”

Centrally located at 45 Main St., the home is within walking distance of the historic Goodspeed Opera House, the Nathan Hale School House, the town library and other cultural assets.

East Haddam, a quaint and beloved community on the lower Connecticut River Valley, remains a desirable place to live and has been a part of various ‘favorite places’ lists. The town is renowned for its attractions including the Swing Bridge, Devil’s Hopyard State Park, Lake Hayward and Gillette Castle State Park. In addition, the town is steeped in history, old farmsteads, cultural arts and recreation.

For 27 years, the owners say they have never tired of the river views, the beauty of the mist rising in the morning light and the spectacular sunsets.

“They are looking for stewardship in the next owner,” Armstrong-Crockett says. “They are excited to see who will be next.”

Enter the front door into the large foyer. The formal living room showcases pocket doors and original molding. The dining room is window-lined and works for both formal entertaining and casual dining.

The chef’s kitchen offers timeless beauty with solid cherry wood cabinets (some with pullout drawers), stainless steel appliances, subway tile backsplash, black granite counters, a propane stove, a subzero refrigerator, a farmhouse sink and a coffee station.

Relax in the elegant family room with a wood-burning fireplace, views on three sides and new carpet. French doors open to the covered back porch made of solid mahogany decking.

Entertain year-round in the enclosed garden-level sunroom with cozy radiant heat flooring. The space opens to a covered patio and its stately columns that overlook the backyard and a private garden adorned by a water feature. Dine al fresco while watching beautiful sunsets over the river. The first floor also has a half bath.

The second floor offers three bedrooms including a luxurious primary with a balcony facing the river. An updated en suite bath features radiant heat on a timer, marble flooring, a soaking tub and a separate shower. Two additional bedrooms share a full bathroom.

On the top level, you will find a versatile bonus space which could be used as an extra bedroom, a play room, an artist’s studio, a game room, an entertainment center, a home office or guest quarters. There is also a half bath.

A large, walkout basement runs the length of the home and presents high ceilings, a half bath, large-scale storage capabilities and a plug-in generator.

Unique to this home is a 540-square foot summer cottage with a wall of windows overlooking the river. This stunning entertaining space is adorned by a wood-burning fireplace, cathedral ceilings, a sink, custom-built closets, French doors and a new roof.

“It’s a good entertaining space,” Armstrong-Crockett says. “The windows and doors open up and there are panoramic views of the water.” Also on the property is a custom Greek-Revival playhouse that could be used for storage.

The home is heated by oil except for the third level which uses electric heat. A 500-gallon propane, a public septic system and a private well service the home. A wireless security system has been installed.

45 Main St., East Haddam

Because one of the sellers was a master gardener, the professional landscaping and stonework were designed with the goal of framing Connecticut River views. All stone walls were constructed from local stone. Unique European hornbeams form aisles in the backyard. The upper garden is a combination of loose pebbles and benches that overlook the river and lower garden. An irrigation system uses water directly pumped from the river.

The backyard is wired for electrical conduits so a pool or an outdoor kitchen are feasible. A motorized lift or a dock for canoes may be constructed. Because the home is set back from the river and slightly elevated on the property, it is not situated in a flood zone.

The parking area for the home is constructed of Connecticut-sourced bluestone and it is entirely encased by boxwood shrubbery.

Armstrong-Crockett is currently giving tours of the home, priced at $1.4 million, and accepting offers. “This is really one-of-a-kind and I am honored to have this listing,” she adds.
